His lectures are a bit confusing.
I just finished taking Mr. Wirth. And to be honest he wasn't a bad teacher. During the semester i thought his lectures were kinda BS. He's a cool guy. He let's you redo essays! If you keep getting under a C on your quizzes or essays he'll keep letting you redo till you get a better grade. That's all!
HE DIDN'T ASSIGN ALOT OF TEDIOUS HOMEWORK. READING MATERIAL LENGTH WASN'T BAD FOR A QUICK SUMMER SESSION. MADE THE STUDENT FOCUS ON THEIR OWN THOUGHTS, NO RIGHT OR WRONG ANSWERS. BEST INSTRUCTOR I EVER HAD.
He's a cool guy, but his lectures are confusing and usually aren't helpfull. He won't motivate you or make lectures interesting. I can't complain about my C though, guess haven't tried hard enough.
an average guy teacher
I just finishing taking Mr. Wirth summer session and I have to say he is a great English teacher. You will have to write 5 essays from 6-10 pages long, but he concentrate more on your train of thought rather than grammer. He really works with you in trying to give you a good grade for the course. I highly recommend this teacher!!
good teacher
Mr. Wirth is so totally the coolest English teacher there is. He uses books under $15 and is cool about late work. Plus you can curse in his class.
Improved my writing skills/style dramatically after Mr.Wirth's class. Teacher is really forgiving and laid back but you gotta do your work to earn an A.
he is a great instructor, and he really helps
Great teacher! Very easy going, yet encourages you to open your eyes to controversial and interesting ideas. Really wants his students to succeed
Without a DOUBT the best English teacher on the CCSF campus. I dreaded the thought of having to take English 1B during the summer, but Wirth made the class interesting and fun and often relating his interesting and cool stories! Doesn't mind if you swear. He really helped me with my writing skills, and was always encouraging!
Without a DOUBT the best teacher on the CCSF campus!! I dreaded the thought of having to take English 1B during the summer, but Wirth made it so entertaining and fun! Very helpful, very clear, always encouraging, will work with you to improve your grade! If I took him in the summer and he was THIS great, how bout the regular semester?
He is a very HOT HOT HOT teacher...=) He is a straightforward person, he says what he feels and thinks. If act like an adult he'll treat like an adult, but if you act like a child then...all hell breaks loose. He cares about how he can help you to move forward in learning. His topics are interesting. He is a cool teacher.
I loved Nathan's class. Took his 1A a couple summers ago, and while we had to write alot of essays, the subject material was enthralling and his teaching was so inspiring he makes you a better student. highly recommend this amazing teacher.
hard class. without a great grammar, u can't expect to get a B or higher.
Highly recommend taking his class. very nice guy, knowledgeable and extremely helpful. Show up, do the work, talk to him and turn in your work (late will be accepted if you talk to him!). Took him in the summer for English 96...
He is awesome.!!!!
As long as you meet all the requirements Mr. Wirth asks you on the prompts, you will do fine in his class. Very clear instruction. Very helpful if you need his help...
Excellent. He's a good teacher, has nice tangents and jokes that show you his interest in the subject, and keep the class light. The essays are serious, and you should expect to work hard in the class, but he is flexible, within reason. He seems like he grew up wanting to be an English instructor (or musician?), and now he's in his dream job.
Fantastic Teacher, but expect to work hard in this class. There is an insane amount of reading, and 5 essays, including the final. Great material, fun teacher, great lecture style, but you need to enjoy reading and writing to really have a blast in this class.
Nathan is my favorite teacher I've had a CCSF! He is understanding and will explain things. He also is hilarious and down-to-earth and very supportive. Language and subject matter is adult-so take this class if you want a teacher to keep it real
Awesome teacher ever! I wish I could have taken his English 1B class, but too sad all of his classes are in the evening. I had his eng96 class last 2008! It took me almost 3 years to write this comment, but because he's my greatest English professor ever and his class was unforgettable, I wrote this:) Take his class. You'll learn ALOT!
A really cool teacher, his interest level increases with class participation. rated R teacher, and very interesting. He will test you, but you will need practice to understand the material. Lots of reading, but it will help you the sooner you read his books that he assigns. Great teacher
Mr. Wirth, Is one of the best English teachers. He walks you through all the essays and gives you extra time if you need it (Not on all the assignments), participation in class just helps to boost your grade. The subject material is interesting and he makes the class fun. If you are a bit nervous taking an English class take him he is the best.
Wirth is awesome- he is passionate about what he teaches. There is quite a bit of homework, but it's really not that bad (Im pretty lazy). He is super knowledgeable, and really understanding of peoples needs and time. Really enjoyed him and his class. Curses like a sailor...fair warning :-)
Never in my life have I had an engl teacher who has taught me so much. He is EXTREMELY helpful, SUPER clear in his explanations w/ assignments, and is VERY nice. His class is not easy though, but nothing comes easily, you have to put in the work. I have never truly grasp the rules of writing until I met him. Thank you so much Nathan!
Passonate about writing. Cares a lot about the students and will help any way he can. No nonsense when it comes to plagiarism and cheating. Loves to get the class engaged in lively discussions and those who participate tend to do better. Chicken or egg? Smart, funny, engaging teach. Count your blessings to be in his class.
Very good teacher and intelligent. Very Helpful. Gives you many chances, but don't plagiarize. Do your best, attend the class, do all home work , and you will be fine. I'm lazy student, and I'm not native speaker but I got B in his class.
I have taken classes with Nathan since Engl 96 and I am sad to leave. Nathan is a compassionate, enthusiastic, and encouraging teacher. He is laid back but be prepared to do a fair amount of reading and writing. He lets you re-write the first two essays and is available to answer questions (office hrs or email). He gives great feed back on essays.
I have been a follower of Nathans since English 94 then 96, 1A and 1B. YES, he is a hard professor with a lot of writing assignments but thats what English is. He really abhors plagirism as he should but allows the student 1 rewrite at a lower grade but dont try it i have seen students expelled. HE cares about his students and is a great person.
Nathan is a great teacher! He's very passionate and knowledgeable about the stories we read, and his enthusiasm for Literature make even the most disengaged person interested. He makes Shakespeare easy and accessible for even the most English-phobic student. I highly recommend any of his classes!
OH GOD!! This class has tons of work to do!!! 2 books to read, two 10 pages essays to write, 3 personal essays, presentation, quiz, homework everyday and i am serious. This class almost kill me. He is a good teacher but the works really are too much!!!There is no time left for you to do the other classes' work!
I have been following him since 93, 96, and IA... He is not only smart but kinda corky guy and that makes class fun and draw more attention. If you do HW and pay attention to what he wants for essay, you will certainly get an A !!
I LOVE HIM! he is so funny, so understanding! he is very liberal. very forgiving, very honest. not strict with deadlines. very laid back. very passionate about literature. he gives you all the info you need for the essays, just take notes. did 4 essays.
Completely disagree wit the previous user. Nathan is EXTREMELY helpful. Ask him a question and he will make sure you understand what you have to do completely. He's very chill and funny. If you do your work you will get a B at least. Good teacher especially for 96
Nathan's class is hard, no lies about that; however, he is there to help you every step of the way. I've taken his 96, 1A, and 1B class, so that should tell you something. If you want an easy A English class go to skyline, if you want a class that challenges you and the teacher cares take Mr. Nathan's class.
Lots of writing! It is an English class though, so I guess it is to be expected. Nathan is very helpful, his expectations are clear, and he will let you turn essays in late, though I don't recommend it because you will get behind. He is relaxed about due dates, but you shouldn't be because you will feel overwhelmed at the end of the semester.
GREAT teacher. Medium grader, will fix errors and deduct points ONLY if the errors are consistent. Doesn't really enforce readings. I had 0 worries in this class. Didn't do reading plus and I got an A. Always there for help too! Great teacher really. Really funny and wants to be there! Gives good life advice too. Oh and you can turn your essay late
He is OK.
My first college class. English is a strong subject for me so I figured I could handle the summer workload. Maybe he was as daunted by the condensed semester as we were, because he was lenient about small scale homework, flexible on due dates and gave few tests. He was clear, helpful, kind and made a few too many dirty jokes -- great professor.
Mr. Nathan is a mystical Guru. His lectures and knowledge transcend life itself. I want to pitch a tent in his brain and live there. He expects a lot, but it is all worth it.
Hard class. A lot of work, more than any other class. He often wastes a lot of time BS each class.
He is hilarious. I never got bored in this class. He gives a lot of work but it's all for the best. He's not just a professor, he's a good friend who can tell you so much about life. Take him, he's awesome. ?
he is a good teacher. If u need help, just go to his office essays are tough, but he will tell you how to write don't worry too much For an international student, It is not too hard to pass
Nathan is great, cool and pretty laid back. He likes to state a few thing en between the lines, so be sharp to caught it. Overall really great teacher, he makes you work for it and give you chances even if you screwed up.
Great teacher
He was the best professor I have ever taken. He is always there to help you, he really wants you to pass the class and succeed but he would make you to work for it. He is a tough grader but he lets you turn in essays late at times and he is pretty laid back. All in all, I really recommend him, you won't regret taking him.
Nathan is the best professor I have had. He really offers students something (knowledge) that they can use beyond school campuses. He challenges you to think beyond the English language and his assignments are often thought provoking. Stay on track with his weekly assignments and you'll do alright. Not an easy A, but the his teaching is invaluable.
HE IS VERY UNDERSTANDING AND WILL WORK WITH YOU I TOTALLY RECOMMEND HIM.I TOOKED HIM FOR ENLIGH 96 AND 1A. You get what you work for thats for sure.
Nathan is awesome! He does give a few long writing assignments but he is lenient. He aims to pass you as long as you do the work.
I took Nathan's class during the summer and although it was fast paced (only six weeks) he was very understanding and flexible with students who needed extra help. His quizzes are straight forward and he will allow you to re-write your paper if you get less than an A. His class is not easy but with dedication and focus you will succeed.
Nathan is awesome. His classes are not very tough nor super easy, but he surely works with each student to help them pass. Every time I had questions, he was there to answer and clarify. He provides a workbook online for students to print and use throughout the semester. It usually costs about $15, and it will help students in further semesters.
Professor Nathan is there for you, he'll make you work but at the end everything will be rewarding. I struggled a lot as an ESL student but his class helped a lot with my writing. 5 essay total, no other homework and 2 quizzes. Participation matters.
Really enjoyed his class. The essay assignments are interesting to work on. Very helpful, available to discuss issues you're having with assignments. Accepts late homework and essays - very understandable. Taking 1A with him now too.
Straightforward, great, and real lectures. Approachable and gives good feedback. Ask questions!
Hilarious!! Be up for the challenge. Very understanding and takes late essays. Take his class, you won't regret it. Live. Learn. Laugh.
Nathan Wirth is awesome. He is willing to work with you to help you succeed in English. He was super patient and attentive to the needs of ESL students, and tailored lessons to address things like sentence structure. He uses hilarious examples, often injected with his dark and sarcastic humor. If you pay attention in class, it's very entertaining!
A real gem! Hilarious, caring & generous! Always willing to help you out. His deep understanding of the class materials makes his lectures very interesting & insightful. Very accessible after class--happy to discuss the issues you have. For writing assignments, follow instructions & put in real effort, and you will get good grade! Highly recommend!
Very emotional person. Very good teacher. Highly recommend!
I enjoy Professor Wirth's class so much! The materials are interesting and he organizes them well. He is an interesting person too, feel happy listen him talking stuff. Also accept late essay. Take him!
I cant say enough about Nathan. He is so generous in his wisdom and graciously humble. By far one of the best professors I have ever had. Take lots of notes, ask questions, and do the work. He is very fair in grading.
I just took Nathans summer 1A course, it was a full semester compacted into 6 weeks. He is amazing, he really is. Poetry can be hard to understand but he makes sure he reads through everything as a class and also provides the class with a course reader with all the material you need (which he wrote himself) saves you a lot of $$$. Take him!
He is a great professor I met before. Easy passed if you have done the homework. Take him!
I love him so much!!! he made English much more fun and enjoyable. He never leaves his children suffer.
He's a gem. Points off only for being a softie to the detriment of students - overfull classroom was uncomfortable, students were permitted to have distracting side conversations all class. Transformed my sense of what an English class could be. A real, genuine, solid, kind human being. Heavily international student population in his classes.
He is a great teacher, very hilarious because he tries a lot to make the classes enjoyable and entertained linking the lesson with some funny jokes. Fear to grade essays and also he gives the opportunity to correct the essay the second time. A lot of homework , but if they are cancel classes he can cancel homework too.
4 outclass Essays(70%), 1 reading book that you need to answer questions every chapter online, 1 his book which was included several difficult and confusing articles and those were very important for your writing. The best way to get A was to do several times the office hour before summiting essay. and make sure you are outgoing.
Reading several "poor" ratings just made me laugh. Took his 1A last summer and 1B this spring. There are not enough words to describe how kind and amazing he is. He accepts late essay and allows revision. I wonder if there were any other English teachers at CCSF will be like him. I just wish he could teach 1C, so I could be his student again
He is really great! I took 1A and 1B and learned a lot from his class. No midterm, no final and no in-class writing, only 4-5 essay and you have the revise chance. Take him!
Lets face it, if English is not your best subject, this class will be difficult regardless of your professor. That being said, Nathan made the learning process fun and intriguing. Nathan is hilarious if you understand his sense of humor. There is a LOT of writing, but that is the expectation of the class. I highly recommend taking his class!!
The absolute most garbage teacher I have ever had in my 3 years of college. This guy tries so hard to be different that it negatively affects you. He uses a 1-3 point system for grading and gives terrible lecture videos. I am halfway through his 1B class and regret choosing his class. CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TEACHER!
My Name is Jessica Carreon, Nathans class is a political playing field of mixed personalities including his own, if you allow him to hone in on you, he will! perhaps to challenge your creativity or to tug at your essences. His assistant KATE is a great help and is very intuitive. I urge you to schedule an appointment with her. Good Luck!
Nathan is a great teacher. Although his work may be challenging at circumstances, you must put time and effort into the assignments given. My writing has drastically improved and I noticed I am able to think critically about different readings. Notes given to you are provided by him (also the pdfs), that are well described.
Provide videos and PDFs that explain everything in detail. The readings are always interesting. Allow revision for 3 of the 4 essays to get better grades. Always there when you need help. What more can you ask for?
This class was excruciatingly painful and bothersome. When you read a ridiculous article, it can trigger depression and turmoil in your mind. That was a tough essay grader; no matter how much effort you put in and how hard you work on your essay, he will give you a grade of 60%-70% (you would not truly understand what the article writes).
If English is not your first language, you should definitely take his 1B class. His lectures were well-prepared. Total 4 papers for the whole semester, no extra credit. He accepted late work as long as you explain your situation before that. All assignments are relative to your papers, so those assignments are super helpful.
Nathan is a great teacher.
Nathan is truly one of the best educators out there. He is passionate and knowledgable, but also humble and down to earth. He understands most students take English as a requirement and does not expect perfect, but you need to put in the work. Passing with him is easy: go to class and actually pay attention! read the material, submit your homework.
People who think Nathan isn't good, I think they're just not putting in enough effort. Or maybe they don't want to spend the time to pass English 1A and 1B. Nathan is funny, patient, and super helpful. If you take the time to go through the materials he provides, your essay will definitely score at least 80%.
10/10 would take again, I dont understand how anyone could do poorly in his class he accepts assignments late without penalty and allows you to rewrite all except like 1 or 2 of the essays you write if you dont get an A. He is super helpful too!
Nathan is one of my most favorite teachers that I've encountered here at CCSF. I'm an older student and having been out of the school setting for more than a decade, I am so grateful to this professor for all that I learned in his class. He is caring and funny, and most of all he will work with every student to make sure you are successful.
Nathan is just an all around good guy and caring person. He is very engaging in class and gives you more than enough opportunities to succeed. I think he is the best professor I have had in four semesters at CCSF.
All I can say is great things about this professor, writing has always been a struggle for me but this class made me more open to writing. Consisted of 4 major essays which count most of your grade and small assignments that helped to write the essays. No final, just a group presentation which may seem intimidating but its a short assignment.
Nathan is a great teacher, very warm and cheerful. The way he organizes the assignments prepares you very well for the papers you will write. He is extremely clear about how to write the papers and flexible beyond most teachers as far as due dates and corrections. His class is fun even when the material is boring, and he will help you write better.
