Excellent professor with great energy. Decent amount of homework but manageable if you keep up properly. He explains problems quite well, but concepts can often be taught too abstractly.

His TA, Dylan, was amazing and helpful! Emerson is cool and tries to explain things in a non-confusing way. He doesn't really say how the grade is distributed; I scored pretty well on the midterms and finals (A on midterms high B on final) and still got a B+ which lowkey doesn't add up but its whatever. I recommend! Also his handouts are helpful!

Professor Emerson is super organized and prepares you well for exams. There's a lot of homework and weekly quizzes, so staying on top of things is key. If you haven't taken calc before, expect to do a lot of self-studying. The workload is heavy, but the exams are fair if you keep up.

This class is basically taught entirely by the TA's. The lectures and discussions are basically never in sync so get ready to pretty much teach yourself the course. There is lengthy homework twice a week and 1 quiz every week. However, feedback on anything graded is limited and ambiguous, and the professors handwriting is borderline scribble.

Very good lectures. Fast paced. The TA's are always taking points off either the homework or quizzes. The quizzes can be a bit difficult all based on how fairly the TA's grade. Only midterms and final are curved no overall class curve. He is a bit intimidating when you don't know something and sort of makes you feel bad about it. Overall he is good

He's not a bad professor by any means but the course was such a mess. There's a lot of busy work: 2 time-consuming HWs a week and a weekly quiz, both of which had very limited feedback and ridiculously strict grading, but that could be TA dependent. Tests are unreasonably hard and the final had an average of 45%. Grading is also very test heavy.

Emerson is a delightful professor who genuinely cares about his students. His mannerisms can be a unpredictable sometimes, but he's highly approachable and wants everybody to learn, evidenced by his group projects and subsequent feedback. Quizzes and mid term were easy, I just bombed the final which clearly tanked my grade - be careful of that!

This course has several group presentations, multiple essays on several important mathematical periods as well as civilizations such as China, Greece, Islamic world, and etc. The grading criteria were not very clear, but the professor was willing to help. Interesting course that gave me an understanding of the development of math.

Big personality; Not a pushover. Given that USC math is subpar, he makes it somewhat bearable, but don't expect a warm, supportive presence. You'll never quite feel like he's “there to help” so much as “there to teach.” Great for students with strong quantitative skills and confident personalities who don't need much hand-holding.

While Professor Emerson is good at explaining material, his grading is horrific. He lacks empathy and care for his students' education. One simple Algebraic mistake will cause you to lose half the credit on a problem worth 25% of an exam. His TA, Dylan, is phenomenal, though, and a great instructor.

lowkey not too bad hes a very easy grader along with the TAs and his quizzes are way too easy. his exams do get tougher and prepare for curveball questions that will eat up some time however it is doable with a little thinking. diff eqs are pretty easy so.

Prof Emerson is a great instructor. He provides notes for lessons and is an very engaging lecturer. The HW for the class is very difficult and graded for accuracy, but it will leave you very prepared for exams. There are weekly quizzes during the discussion period but they aren't difficult.

Professor Emerson is a good lecturer for math, and his explanations make sense. The only downside is that he is pretty picky with giving test marks if you are doing very well in the class. There's also homework due every week, but they help your grade if you are not doing as well on the tests. Take him for calculus 2 if he is an option.

Hasn't taught the class in 10 years and it's obvious because even he doesn't understand the content for MATH 245. Gave us no MATLAB projects and gave everyone a random grade for them, often teaches the material wrong and has to start over, confuses himself during lecture. Feedback on exams is very vague and harsh. Overall useless and unorganized

Professor Emerson is a funny and quirky guy. He's very passionate about math and tries his best to make things understandable. Homework is weekly and pretty long and hard, and there are weekly quizzes during discussion that are pretty easy if you get the homework. My TA Dylan Park was very good though and was very helpful. Would take Emerson again!

I loved Professor Emerson! Homework is graded on correctness and there are weekly quizzes. Exams are pretty straightforward and a lot of partial credit is given out. Go to office hours, at least the TA's, as they are extremelyyyyy helpful.

Emerson's lectures were often disorganized, and explanations were unclear, which made it difficult to follow the material. Key topics were occasionally skipped due to poor time management, and lectures rarely reached practice problems. Grading and exam feedback felt unclear, making overall course expectations difficult to understand.

Funny and engaging professor with great energy in class. The material was definitely difficult, but he encouraged learning and made lectures easy to follow even without sticking closely to the textbook. Sometimes explanations got a little off track, but overall his teaching style made a hard subject more manageable. Exams were ~70% averages
