Lots of homework but very friendly and really helpful but just messy writing and fast talker attendance MANDATORY !!
He is a friendly teacher and very smart. His office hour is very helpful and tries to help as much as students he can. However, he made lots of mistakes in the class and messy notes. Even if a similar type of questions, sometimes he uses different templet for that. He made lots of questions in the first midterm and no one submits in advance.
He spends classes doing problems, but he's working through them for the first time himself and gets confused. When someone asks him a question, he spends 10 minutes going on a tangent while not answering the question, usually opening some Wikipedia articles on the way. He also sends several emails a day, half of which are about BUEC instead of 336.
He does no have a clear rubric and seems flexible, but he was not. He deducts marks if you don't have a good format. He kept sending us at least 2 emails per day. Some "good" day, you will receive 5 emails from him about all the assignments and his office hour. He sent emails to everyone even if he leaves his office.
Your grade is made up mainly of your two midterms and the final. Teaching is mediocre at best as he does not have a lesson plan. Tries going over questions from textbook that will have loads of mistakes. Enthusiastic about what he does but teaching ability is not there, with many assignments being delayed since some people in class didn't get them.
Routinely starts lectures 30 mins late. Assignments are weekly, but often delayed. Midterms constitute a significant chunk of the grade. Tends to go off on tangents while answering questions. Refers to Wikipedia as a reliable source, check it for a refresher or supplementary information. Unclear walkthroughs on assignment questions.
clear about what he wants in the exam, very attentive, always stays behind class and during breaks, very informative about whats going on in the class and when his office hours will be
gives good feedback and revised marks for the assignment he thought he marked us too hard on. He knows the material is hard so he spends lots of time going through assignment questions. Allows ensures that we are informed of changes happening. Very enthusiastic about what he is teaching. He is a very smart guy.
Reliance on Wikipedia in most lectures is questionable. Postpones assignments and midterms regularly. Office hour availability is random and inconsistent. Does a lot of work showing how to use Excel, even though only tested on interpretation of data. Delays lectures half an hour on average. Knowledgeable, has extensive industry experience.
Very knowledgeable about statistics and willing to help his students. Can sometimes be disorganized.
He goes way too fast in lectures. I see many students recording the lecture. In his office hours, there's a long line because nobody understands what to do in his assignments. The TA's aren't helpful. The midterm is on paper, but in more than 80% of his lectures he uses Excel. Then he gives us Wikipedia screenshots to study for the midterm.
Good prof
Nate is the nicest guy but he is extremely unorganized. Attending lecture is mandatory because he speaks so fast and if you simply look back on his notes after the fact, they'll make little to no sense. He holds many office hours but the line is always an hour long because no one understands what is going on. Doesn't prepare us for exams enough.
Nate is a really outgoing and likeable professor. He makes class enjoyable and he really knows his stuff. However, his teaching methods can be disorganized at times (ie: uses Excel for the whole lecture) and he sometimes assumes students know more than they really do. Overall he is good, but his explanations of concepts can be unnecessarily complex
Gave us 2 days to study for the midterm. Frequently delays assignment release dates, to the point where he had to scrap an assignments and push the grade value per assignment up. Delays releasing the review forms until after an easy second midterm to boost opinion in the class. Attend office hours for more clarification on class content
Just saying, he talks too fast and doesn't go over a lot of essential info, and if he does hes too fast for you to hear. Also what your'e gonna understand is probably not on the final. Great personality tho and really helpful during midterms. Needs to give clearer notes and lectures please. hi Nate if you're reading this.
Nate cares so much about his students and will do whatever it takes to see everyone succeed. If you go to class and put in the effort, you will do well. Little unorganized but overall, a very knowledgeable prof.
Went into the course with a very optimistic attitude, but was disappointed to find the course to be exactly the opposite. Grades too easy, class average on midterm was 91, the curve is way too high. Has sporadic office hours, most of the time hes late for. Caring, and has excellent industry experience, but just not yet ready for academics
Definitely a inspirational professor that tries to make sure his students have PLENTY of time to learn and finish assignments. Sort of lazy since none of exams or assignments are actually made by him. They are all taken from online or a book. Midterm 1 was just time constraining otherwise not too hard. Final was essentially midterm 2 and other Qs.
Nate has a great personality for sure. He cares for the students and wants us to have plenty of time to study. However, lecture was disorganized in the first few weeks, but he improved it in the following weeks. He builds up an image that students can be lazy but still get good grades since he allows cheat sheet and not much content was covered.
Nate is an amazing professor. He wants students to succeed and cares deeply about them. Sometimes I found him going too fast during lecture. He has a lot of industry experience. Workload was manageable, but midterm 1 was way too tough. Difficulty level of final exam & midterm 2 was lower than midterm 1. Assignments were doable as well.
Despite being very dedicated to the study of Statistics, the ease of the exams makes the curve extremely high. The average for our final was over 90%, and with the course average being so high, some in the class got a C despite getting an 80% overall. Nate neglects to check emails, will often use Wikipedia in lectures, and always starts 30 min late
This is my third time as a TA and I was rather disappointed by the disorganization between Nate and his students. The work he goes over in class generally differs from whats typically taught normally, so students will often have a difficult time if theyre not used to it. Nate delays his lectures half an hour so him and students can sleep in.
Good professor with an impressive work history. He is very different from other profs as he is not a career instructor, and he comes directly from the industry. He spends a lot of time on practical applications in his class, which is vastly different compared to how other professors teach it. If you study hard, you should get an A+.
Boring class Boring exam Unfair at all
Nate is energetic and genuinely cares that students do well. Although not the best communicator, he still gets the key points across. Lectures are posted well ahead of time. Assignments were tough but I ended up learning a lot. Midterm was fair but the final was tougher. Solid choice of professor, hopefully he gets a permanent office next semester.
There is a lot of material in this class both in the lecture slides and the assignments, prepare to work hard in this class. Assignments were quite challenging, although for someone with lots of C experience the opposite could be true. Payne is a decent teacher but he often tries to cover way to much material (100 slides/class)
This was Nates first time teaching a CMPT course. The start was rough but he improved at teaching quickly throughout the semester. Sometimes still struggles to get points across but he is very enthusiastic and tries his best to help students both inside and outside of class. The assignments take up a lot of time. The tests were fair.
Nate's lectures are disorganized and confusing. He speaks way too fast and frequently jumps from topic to topic during class. Simple concepts are lost in his long rants about data and technology. There are no slides or textbook in this class and his notes are useless as they are just random and vague concepts scribbled on the board.
extremely disorganized. Assignments are not done properly and changes everything last minute. He makes you think he's a good prof but is terrible at giving feedback. I would not recommend.
Worst prof Ive ever had in the history of my undergrad. Makes false promises to be available for questions, but does not follow through. He was not available during normal class times for the last 3 weeks during quarantine. Too busy sending us pictures of his ski trips throughout the term to actually care about teaching his classes.
He is the worst professor I have ever had, I can't even believe him. He has not done lectures for a month at this point and does not help students answer any questions. We are expected to self learn and completed 3/4 of the term assignments. We didn't even learn stuff on the midterm. He doesn't even reply back to emails asking for clarification.
We haven't had lectures for a long time. We're asked to do 5 regression/classification models he's never taught. Basically, students are browsing Wikipedia for a list of random models to meet the required '5 models'. Kaggle is more organized than this. Code Academy is better than this. What the heck is this? This is a self-taught class.
Lectures were extremely disorganized, felt like he was making the syllabus as he taught. constantly moved from topic to topic. Assignments were vague and so were his answers to any questions I asked.
A complete waste of my time. Nate googles all lecture content as he teaches during class. That is, IF he decides to teach. Google search was the real prof of BUS462. Pushes back all 5 assignments till end of the term. Blames COVID-19 for not being available for questions, but what about the weeks before school was cancelled? HM. Not convinced.
His class is very disorganized as he keeps delaying assignments until the end of the semester. His lecture is never clear and he usually just scribble stuff on the whiteboard. We havent even had any lecture for a month so we have to google all the code by ourselves for assignments.
This teacher will be polite in starting till your last exams came especially when you guys done his survey . Be aware for finals
Decided to delay all our assignments to the end of the semester, now swamped with work. When Covid-19 became an issue, he promised to be available and have increased accessibility. All lies, he completely abandoned us. He cancelled lectures before Covid even became an issue, we haven't been taught for ALMOST 6 WEEKS. Never take this man's classes
Good prof even with COVID-19 going on. His assignments are super open-ended giving you freedom on how you want to analyze a dataset. If you dont goto class and pay attention you will fall behind. Everything that is on his exams was taught during lecture and on practice problems. Goto class and practice and youll easily do well.
never reply emailnever give feedback to studentgroup assignment is so difficultthis course is easybut professor give only a few a levelnever take this professors courseso bad i never see beforeHis exam is not correlation with his teach in class
The curve of this course is very high. The professor can not be blamed for that. However the professor at times rushed over some material. For example the anova table for us in bus 232. My grade suffered due to that. I got about 80% but ended up with a C+. Again cant blame the prof just how the curve works. The prof was okay better than others tho!
Several issues with this prof and I don't recommend his class. His marking is unfair and he provides no feedback on assignments, and no opportunity to improve. He stopped teaching after week 5, and my team and I had to Google everything. He moved all assignments to be due within the last few weeks of classes. Too busy with outside work, don't take
His notes are very messy. He post them onto the Whatsapp group, but he doesn't take it seriously at all. His notes are often not in the right order and upside down. It's a pain to look through every note to make it into the right order because other students send pics into the group. He also never replies to messages. No feedback on projects. Avoid
Trust me, dont do that!!! He taught some that the another prof didnt mention, and his teaching style is a little bit indescribable. This course is easy but he can make it difficult. Easy to pass, but hard to get A.
Love this prof. He cares about all his students and even made a Whatsapp group so we can ask questions. He gives a lot of examples so you just have to listen in class and you will know exactly what to except for midterms and finals. However, his notes will ONLY make sense if you go to lecture. If you skip class then it can be a difficult class.
I had Nate a year ago for Bus 232 and I loved his enthusiasm. You could tell he was passionate about stats as this was felt by the class and made it fun. He's a busy guy so be patient but if you want to learn he's there for you! I will definitely take the next required stats class with him
On top of being an exceptional lecturer, Prof Nate is also an extremely impressive individual. If you want to learn the material in a comprehensive way and be inspired for the future at the same time, take his class.
Took bus 232 online with him and he must be the least organized professor out there. No clear study guide, messy lectures that dont correspond to the book or slides. You basically have three different materials the slides, the book, and his lectures which are all unrelated. His exams are extremely unfair too with too many non of the above choices.
Amazing proff! His lectures are clear and straight to the point. He is great at making sure he answers all of our questions and his group projects are straight forward. You can easily succeed in this class if you pay attention to lectures and do all of the practice questions, he usually goes over practice questions in class as well.
Nate is super amazing prof. I am not the best at numeracy, I didn't spend too much time and still get A+. Nate is helpful and patient to answer our questions even students ask him the same things a thousand times. Just go to lectures, do practice questions, sometimes catch up on Whatsapp group. Exams are EXACTLY similar to what he taught
Don't understand why his rating is poor? He is different from the traditional way of teaching as he does not follow the book/slide that he provided, but he clearly stated those are for reference only. As long as you attend his lectures, do the practice Qs and try to keep track of the Whatsapp chat, the exam is extremely similar to his class!
Just did his midterm. It was mediocre at best. Like ??? he constantly says during lecture "I am all about you solving questions and having a practical application on my exams. But then what happens? 97% of the questions on the exam are all theory questions and you need to have a strong understanding of the theory to solve the questions. like ??????
What comes up on his test is very vague. The practice he gave us suddenly became totally useless after one midterm because turns out this midterm is theory-based rather than practical-based. Theory-wised, his lectures are really hard to understand and too messy. Recently, he barely wrote any notes and would only narrate over course materials.
Dont take it with Nate
Nate is all over the place and "doesn't test theory" but then proceeds to make his exams all theory. Practice problems are a waste of time and do not prepare you for his exams.
Absolute joke of a prof. He ends a two hour class after 45 mins because "he has stuff to do". Yeah Nate, you do. It's called teaching us. The fact that we're paying our hard-earned money for this man is bizarre. He doesn't respond to WhatsApp near the due date of the project, vague guidelines, and don't get me started on his exams. Horrible.
We are meant to have two 2-hour lectures a week. Each one ends up being an hour long so why am I paying for 4 hours a week when he only teaches 2? He always reiterates "this is a practical class. As long as you are proficient with the practice problems youll do really well". Well thats a lie as doing practice problems prepared you for 5% of MT#2.
Nate has done a poor job. He said that practice problems are reflective of what the exams will be like but then on exam 2, 90% of the questions were "conceptual" questions. Nate also says he will post recordings/review/hw feedback but never does and when students ask about it, he will ignore it. He comes late to class and sometimes even skips class
Nate's academic credentials mean nothing when he is incapable of staying true to his words such as showing grades or his grading criteria. He gives out practice questions that are completely "practical" based and but then on the exams, he expects you to answer "conceptual-based" questions which are 90% of the exam. Any other prof is better than him
Nate is one of the worst profs Ive had. Whenever you ask him for something he defers it to a later date and never delivers on his promises. Class is scheduled for 4 hours but likes to wrap it up in 2. Doesnt hold office hours.. Weve had various project submissions due throughout the term and he hasnt marked anything. Exams are a joke.
Broke our group project into 3 sections, but has yet to mark the first one we submitted 2 months ago. Class ends early, his excuses are not valid. Provides practice problems without answers. Problems are not theory based, but then makes the midterm theory based. Absolute horrible class notes. Do not, I repeat, do not take this class with him.
Nate is a flat-out liar. We've been waiting two months to get one component of our project graded, and his excuse was "there were issues with academic dishonesty". Man you've had two months to figure it out. Exams are beyond unfair, he cuts class an hour early each time. His WhatsApp group is a joke, he always ignores people's questions.
The worst prof I've ever had at SFU. Made excuses all term about why we haven't received our marks back yet, even though the term is about to be over.
This guy is a joke. Gives you the impression that he cares but really doesn't. Lectures are a joke, all over the place and so disorganized. Gives out practice problems without solutions and exams are nothing like what the questions he assigns. Doesn't hold office hours and reply to email. This guy's gotta go. Worst prof i've had. AVOID
All the things I wanna say here are accurately mentioned in the below rates by everyone(since summer 2020) The worst prof ever Dont take his course, like seriously.
The professor uses WhatsApp as his only method of communication and will not answer questions or only gives very vague responses. The semester is almost over and we have not had any of our assignments graded. I encourage more students to escalate their complaints further with the Business Department.
He is unorganized and his exams don't follow the textbook, but he makes up for it with his thorough explanations and examples. Very accessible outside of class, willing to stay up rather late to answer student's questions. Understanding if you made a mistake and are willing to make an effort to improve.
I will never take another class with him. His exams are not similar to the practice questions (made by him) at all. We were forced to submit three parts of a project without even getting a feedback on the previous parts. He only communicates on WhatsApp, and most of the times he replies after several days.
During the first day he said the exams were all practical, calculation based, and such that he gives out a ton of questions on said calculations. That's fine, but when exam day came, it was packed with the theory which he never taught. He doesn't admit fault but doubles down as says "it's conceptual". On top a 3 part assignment with zero marks back
My opinion on Nate did a full 180. Seemed like a nice guy at first and was responsive in the Whatsapp group but, the midterms were more theory than calculations, the opposite of what he claimed. Additionally, the first part of 3 part project (which was submitted Jun23) is yet to be marked, we handed in the other parts without feedback.
THIS GUY IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST PROF NO SLIDES AND NO THEORY OR "CONCEPTUAL LEARNING" IN LECTURE. HE SAID ALL EXAMS ARE BASED ON CALCULATIONS AT THE BEGINNING BUT AT THE END HE SAID NO CALCULATIONS. HE HASNT GIVEN BACK OUR ASSIGNMENTS THAT WERE HANDED IN JUNE 23 ( TWO MONTHS AGO)!!!!!!! WORST PROF 10/10 WILL NOT recommend
Lectures are honestly useless, I completely learned from the textbook (which he never references). There were questions on one of the midterms with wrong answers that we asked to be fixed, he will not tell us which questions are incorrect before the final because he "had a multi-hour lecture session going over it", yet there were no recordings.
Lectures are good for understanding the projects, but useless for exams. When we brought this up to him he just kept saying his Qs were fair! Never gave us relevant resources or told us how to prepare for concept-based Qs even after being asked multiple times. Only taught 2/4 weekly lecture hours (should have used time to go over concepts).
If you want to actually learn and have a shot at getting a decent grade, take it with a different prof. Nate is very unorganized and his lectures do not reflect what is going to be on the exams. The term has gone by and we still don't know how we did on our projects. Super unprofessional.
Advice for all future students: GOOGLE THE QUESTIONS DURING THE EXAM. All the questions and answers were straight from Google so you better take advantage of that ;)
Nathaniel Payne was by far the worst professor that I've had at SFU. His inability to get marking done on time, as well as the fact that his exam formats enabled cheaters to get higher marks on both midterm and final exams, is inexcusable. Steer clear of this professor.
His exams are not similar to the lectures and the given practice questions. His teaching is unclear and it's hard to understand what he said. He hasn't marked the assignments that we gave at least 2 months ago and he didn't give any feedback for us to improve. Not recommend if you want to study properly.
Disorganized prof. Makes his midterm and finals the night before! Also, his questions are from a test bank you can easily find online... Also the questions he made himself have incorrect answers because he makes the exams the night before. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Didn't answer my questions during the lecture. Marked assignments months after they were handed in. Lecture material doesn't match assessments. It was a very frustrating semester. Overall good guy, but I don't feel prepared for BUS 336 and I don't feel like I got the most out of that course (BUS 232) I could have with a different prof
This professor is by far the most inefficient one I have ever met at SFU. It takes him three months to mark the projects. He always has excuses like he said he needed to check academic honesty. But he can let TA help him mark together. He is just unable to mark them on time. His lectures are also VERY VERY disorganized. It is very terrible.
Most questions on the final exam can be easily found on google. That is very unfair for students who did final themselves. He said he was upholding academic integrity which is why it took so long for him to mark the projects. But he did not do the same thing on examination or that was just an excuse? SFU canceled contract with him, he deserved it.
He is a nice guy, but his lectures are very terrible and disorganized. He emphasized concept testing and understanding but this is a statistical course. He should focus more on calculations and logical deductions, these practical things. I think he went the wrong way to test students. Also, the practice questions he gave us are pretty useless.
I just want to know is it fine for Nate home's wireless network??????? Three months to mark the project, one week to answer my question on Whatsapp
This guy took 2 months to return project grades which were worth 25% of the grade. The exam that questions were taken from online testbanks and nothing like the practice. Doesn't hold office hours, exams are unfair, and straight-up ignore people when they confront him. Luckily others wont have to suffer as he wont be teaching at SFU
Nate spent more effort trying to lower the curve than actually teach this semester. No rubric or anything given for term project and he took forever to mark. Asked for feedback and he had nothing to say.
I'm glad SFU cancelled his contract. Doesn't deserve to be a prof. Pretty immature for a prof. A bit too disorganised. Don't get swayed by his cool character.
SFU finally changed my grade after 1 month. Nate's grade had a problem and about 75% students got affected. His grading wasn't fair at all.
Honestly, the course is curved so just make sure to do all of the practice questions he assigns and go to class. The content itself is easy. Don't leave everything to last-second and sleep the night before the exam. Exams are generally pretty easy to finish in time if you do this. Great person. No textbook.
Worst professor ever!!!!!!
He's honestly just awesome. Highly recommend him. He clearly loves his job and is good at dumbing it down for students who haven't really taken any stats courses.
This guy is just a joke! What he did was also ridiculous, no specific rubric for the group assignments. The exam is pretty unfair, final can be done by searching the questions via Google. Glad he was fired!
Really have no idea why a person like him can be a professor. Make a Whatsapp group, pretending to be caring. Wrote an exam just before the test date. Took his whole life to mark the team projects. Put useless practice questions to mislead the students.
SFU should raise the standards when hiring the professor!
This professor's teaching method is full of flaws. The practice questions he gave to us were useless and wasted our time working on them. Cut half of the lecture time and make the exam way harder. No rely on emails. No rubric for projects. Everyone can cheat on Final, just typing the questions on Google.
