Very good professor, interesting lectures, knowledgable guy.
Great professor, really knows his subjects and lectures are very interesting and easy to follow. Professional and fun professor. Highly recommend
Great professor. Lectures were crystal clear and very well organized, plus he posted all the Powerpoints on Blackboard. Tests were kind of tricky, but came mostly from the lectures and considerably less from the readings, of which there were many. Overall average difficulty, but well above average skill as a lecturer.
This class is very interesting and Professor Bapat is a great lecturer. He speaks clearly, all power points are online, and he is very dynamic so no risk of falling asleep. However, grading can be a little tough (I was surprised by my test grades) but I guess that depends on the grader for the class. Overall, great class.
Dr. Bapat was fantastic, the lectures were easy to follow and he seemed approachable. His TA did the grading of the papers and some of the guidance on the essays could have been a bit more clear.
Dr. Bapat is great. His POLI 444 class is challenging, yet refreshingly straightforward. Highly recommend both him and the class.
The lectures are interesting and Prof. Bapat is incredible - however DONT let yourself get overconfident! The tests have so few questions (all mult choice) that if you miss a couple your grade will suffer. Grading for the 2 papers is SO harsh and most people ended up with crap grades because of it. Only 4 total grades! (2 tests, 2 papers - 25% ea.)
He is an amazing guy, really knowledgeable on the subject matter. He lectures straight from powerpoints that are online, so it's possible to not go (attendance isn't mandatory but in my opinion lecture really helps). 3 exams (2 midterms and the final) all on Sakai with only 10 Q's and an essay, so study! 10 pg. term paper. Not easy A, but worth it.
He is nice and very knowledgeable, but he is very distant from the students. He doesn't provide any homework/activities or he doesn't talk about office hours or how he is available to help at all. The only grades in the class are tests/papers, so there isn't much hope of bringing your grade up if you do bad. He is nothing special, but not bad.
I really liked Professor Bapat, he gives a good lecture and is very informed on the topics that we went over. The structure of the class was really new to me (only grades were 2 exams and a 10-page paper), but none were all that difficult. I would recommend taking this class if you have interest in the topic.
Dr. Bapat is very knowledgeable about this subject and it shows in his lectures. There aren't a lot of grades (two midterms, a final, a paper, and recitation) so it is important to study the slides and know major concept from the readings if you want to do well.
Professor Bapat is extremely well versed in his field and it shows in his lectures. There aren't very many grades in the class (2 midterms, final, a 10-page paper) but as long as you study the lecture slides and do most of the readings, the exams aren't too hard.
Professor Bapat is a really nice guy, and will help with any questions that you have! His class is a lot of work, but the content makes it worth learning.
Loved every minute of his class. Has super great credentials, can't believe he's taking his time to teach an intro polisci class. Lectures are easy to understand, he does amazing job at breaking up complex content into easy to understand material. Tests are a little difficult, fairly specific and we had a 10 page paper. I would HIGHLY recommend him
This was easily the worst class I've taken at UNC: material is easy; shoddy, delayed feedback on most of my work; lectures spent 30 minutes on one slide, and run through the rest; Bapat was not accessible; inconsistent grading btwn different TAs & Bapat (as noted between numerous comrades in the class). Got an A, but did not learn anything new.
Professor Bapat's class consists of few grades. This leaves little room for improvement if you begin to slip. My experience with him was that he held regular office hours, but he did not seem readily available to help struggling students with questions or answer emails. I would not recommend his class if this is a subject you struggle with.
It is clear that Professor Bapat is super knowledgable about the subject. He is a great lecturer, but it can get a little dull at times. Read the book and pay attention to lectures and you should be fine.
Dr. Bapat clearly knows what he is talking about and is very passionate, however, he did not wear a microphone in a lecture for 350+ and his lectures could be a bit dry. There are very few grades in the class, so there is not a lot of room to mess up. The overall class was not too bad, but the grading standards were not clear.
He is really smart on the subject, however lectures can get kind of boring and dry. There are only 2 midterms, a final and a 10 page paper and the midterms are 10 multiple choice and an essay. I got an A, but don't feel like I learned all that much. He also really is not accessible if you want help.
He is very knowledgeable and I loved the subject so the lectures were not dry to me, but I could see how they would be dry to others. Tried to meet with him outside of class but was unsuccessful. There are very few grades so you have to do very well on everything.
One 10 page paper, two midterms, recitation participation grade, and a cumulative final. I found this class to be quite boring; international relations just isn't my thing. All the homework is reading from the textbook. But the midterms and final are based on the reading and the lecture, and he is clear and organized.
I found lectures with Navin to be really interesting. He is obviously extremely knowledgeable. However, there are very few grades--two midterms, a paper, recitation, and the final, so you must do well on everything. Additionally, he doesn't round (so an 89.99999 would still be a B+).
I really liked the class material, and his lectures were fairly interesting. Be aware that there a very few grades taken in this class, so the paper and tests count a lot. Recitation was a joke and contributed nothing (other than the participation grade), but that may have just been my TA. Lecture was just that, Bapat talking without interruption.
Graded by only a few assignments, so you HAVE to do well in order to succeed. However, they're not that hard! Dr. Bapat is an amazing, passionate lecturer. I sat near the front, so I could hear him clearly but can understand how others in the back had difficulty because he did not use mic. Recitations were pretty smooth, too, but depends on T.A.
This was my first POLI class I have ever taken and it was pretty chill. Bapat talks fast but is very knowledgeable. His slides are short so going to lecture is a must (readings may be helpful too). I felt like we covered a lot but only the basics for each concept. There was a 10 pg paper and tests were mostly based off lecture and recitation.
I really loved Professor Bapat's lectures, but there were too few grades to accurately represent students' work ethic and capabilities. I put in a lot of work for this class and felt like I learned a lot, there just really isn't a lot of wiggle room grading-wise.
Professor Bapat is very knowledgable and passionate about what he teaches. However, his lectures can get to be a little boring and it's hard to pay attention. Only five grades the entire semester, so it's crucial to do well. The midterms are only 10 questions so you really have to know your stuff. His lectures do prepare you for the exam, though.
Professor Bapat's lectures aren't the most boring, but they can be hard to pay attention to. The class isn't that hard, but I feel like I got very little out of it. You have 2 midterms, 2 5-page papers, your recitation participation, and a final. The midterms are 10 multiple choice and an essay. They're not super difficult but not easy either.
Paying attention in lecture will definitely help you with the multiple choice and essay sections of the exams. If you do all the readings thoroughly, pay attention in class, and work hard to participate during recitation, you can get an A in this class.
I really like Professor Bapat. His lectures were interesting and pretty engaging and always ended perfectly on time. Only 2 five page papers (graded by TAs) and 2 midterms with 10 MC and an essay and a final so not too many grades. Pretty unbiased teacher with interesting material. Didn't read my textbook at all, just pay attention in class
Good professor and the lectures aren't really long. You only have two papers, two midterms, and a final so if you don't do well on one of them, you don't have a lot of opportunities to get it up. He doesn't really budge on test questions so don't even try to get points back. Overall, not super hard but you do have to do the work
This class has 2 5-page papers, a mid-term, a final exam, and a small participation grade. Unlike a lot of teachers at UNC, Bapat gives clear expectations, prepares his students, and does not try to trick you on the exam. For that reason, I really enjoyed this class. I thought it was an easier-ish A.
Boring but nice to look at. Lectures are often just tangents, but grade is heavily reliant on papers which helps offset tricky exams.
I am a poli sci major and this is the worst class I have ever taken. Bapat's lectures are impossible to pay attention to and he spends half of class on the first slide before speeding through the rest. Exams aren't difficult but graded by TA's. My TA was highly disorganized and graded extremely unfairly. Would not recommend this class!
Navin knows what he is talking about, but you can tell how great he thinks he is by the way he speaks- with a smirk on his face. The class was fairly easy, but lectures are pointless and Bapat doesn't say anything of substance- he just poses questions and doesn't answer them and half his slides are common sense things that don't need to be there.
Interesting topic, not a great professor. Bapat is a tough grader, and only has a few graded items so you HAVE to do well on those, and provides almost NO feedback on the exams which each had a 50% essay. Above all that, his lectures are just him talking at you for 50 minutes, literally no one else speaks. Would not recommend this class with him!
Smart guy, terrible professor. Doesn't care about his students much, doesn't help with explanations of how to improve on midterms or essays. Very few grades and lectures are boring with few opportunities for questions. This class would have been a good one with a good professor.
I enjoyed Professor Bapat, he's smart and his lectures were pretty interesting. I wish he would have presented more information in the lectures, however, as sometimes it was more of an overview. That being said, definitely read the textbook. Overall, the papers were graded slightly on the harsh side and you need to study well for exams. Solid prof.
Class attendance is not mandatory as PowerPoint slides are posted online. However, adding supplemental information to them during lecture is very helpful. Definitely read the textbook as it will be very helpful for essays/exams. If you study, the exams are not too difficult, but do know the major terms in depth.
His lectures are amazing and genuinely interesting. You will get to know a lot from his lectures but his grading criteria are terrible and even if the exams don't have much syllabus, it is terribly difficult to score well. He doesn't curve.
Navin is a very good lecturer and lectures are interesting, but attendance isn't mandatory. If you read to book and memorize the vocab you will do fine in the class.
Thought this class was super interesting. He has so much information about the topics discussed and doesnt put everything thats on the tests on the slides or in the text book. (Go to class). HOWEVER. To get a decent grade on a paper... goodluck. Id get 100 on the MC but then do poorly on the essay and almost fail the tests. Hes not 100% clear
By far one of the most interesting classes at UNC, and Dr. Bapat is an excellent teacher. His lectures are great and very interesting, he really sparked my interest in IR. Just beware of the exam essays, they grade them very harshly and expect you to put very detailed information. But if you do that youll do fine.
Professor Bapat was okay. He cares a lot about research and his lectures aren't very engaging. I like the way the class was set up -- two essays you can choose when to do. Mostly graded by the TAs, but they make a concerted effort to ensure its fair. Honestly, if you read the textbook (per assigned) & study that, you'll be fine. Lectures are so-so
Lectures are clear and easy to follow. Your grade is based mainly on papers that are graded by the TA.
Prof Bapat is extremely intelligent and has a strong focus on research. His lectures are engaging but can get repetitive over the course of the semester, and he gives you a lot of leeway in your final research essay. His expectations were clear and he was generous this semester, but stay away if you are someone who prefers a more structured class.
Dr. Bapat was incredible this past semester. He was flexible, understanding, and caring. Had a very strong understanding of the course material and made the material even more interesting than it already was.
While his lectures are decent and he seems like he is an expert at the topics, because I took this class during the pandemic, I didn't interact with him once. He released every lecture on the first day, which were recorded months prior, and then he would send out an email about once a month. TAs do all the grading and the class isn't very hard.
I took this course online asynchronously and do not recommend it. All the lectures posted were a year old and hard to understand. If you want to do well in the class, you basically need to teach yourself. Tests and assignments were not bad, but the teaching side of the class was a flop.
I would not recommend taking this class online because he uses pre recorded lectures that are a year old. TA's grade the two papers which are worth a lot. Class is 2 midterms and a final. Bapat is overall a nice person but his teaching was not up to date so the textbook helped explain most concepts.
The class content-wise was very interesting. There are weekly readings and a recitation. The lectures were asynchronous so not many opportunities to interact with Professor Bapat. Otherwise, he seems pretty nice and knowledgeable. Most assignments rely on your TA, but just doing the readings and watching the lectures should be enough to do well.
Class was asynchronous so I can't judge all that well but he was a pretty good lecturer. Very to the point but still gets the information across which was nice.
As an Indian-American student, I don't think I've ever related to a professor as much as I did to prof. Bapat. This class was about terrorism & political violence, his research area, and he cares deeply about the topic. Gives amazing anecdotes and engaging lectures, easy to understand. There were only 3 papers too. One of the best profs at UNC
Professor Bapat's class includes mostly lectures with slides easily found on Sakai. The course is well organized and easily to access. The tests were open book with mutliple choice answers that can be found in the slideshows and an essay question. Two essays are required for the course but they aren't very difficult. Overall the class was not hard.
Dr. Bapat's lectures were always interesting, he tied in historical and modern examples to the concepts he presented. However, it's clear that he mostly cares about his research and is just teaching the class because he has to. Your grade depends on your TA, he's really nice, but is very hands-off.
Professor Bapat has no control over any grading for this course. There is an extreme amount of differences between TAs as the one I had graded everything harshly and others gave As out for everything. The class is not difficult and Professor Bapat is kind, but the TA will make or break your experience.
Professor Bapat is caring and gives great career advice during office hours. He is also one of the rare professors in the POLI/PWAD department that is not de-sensitized to war and political conflict. That said, he can be a bit uptight. Also, Bapat makes sure that all essay and test grade averages per TA are around the same.
Professor Bapat is an amazing lecturer. Though everything is graded by the TAs, he makes sure to review every grading before posting our grade. But I had more contact with my TA than with him. 50% of grade are exams, 40% are two papers, and 10% is participation in recitations. I didn't do well in the first exam but still got an A!
Prof. Bapat is easily one of my favorite poli instructors I've had so far. You have to write two papers and he gives you a list to choose from with the topic and date to submit them. The tests are open-note, online and easy as long as you pay attention to the lectures and powerpoints. His lectures are really insightful & zoom-optional!
Professor Bapat was insightful and informative throughout this semester. Lectures were interesting, but a little boring at times. Class is graded off of two papers, two midterms, a final, and participation. Essays were graded fairly and the exams were open-note and not too hard. Overall great class and definitely recommend.
Bapat is quite the good professor. He lectures rather well and his poli sci research is interesting. The textbook we used was a great resource, and I encourage using it, but for the latter half of the semester I really slacked on it and turned out fine. Every week has a different essay prompt - you choose two of these weeks to submit essays.
Grade consisted for two papers (you choose the papers you want to write/their due dates), three exams, and recitation. Exams were open note, but do prepare for them. Study lecture slides and readings (helpful for MC and essay section). Had Parajon for TA. Make sure you participate well and genuinely contribute to class. Fair essay grader.
Legit one of the best professors at Chapel Hill. For my class all we had were 2 exams, 2 papers, the midterm, and a weekly recitation (which was canceled half the time).
Best lecturer I have had so far at UNC. He really knows his stuff and his class is so well organized, there are no surprises. The class was SOO easy and he gives you plenty of time to get your stuff done. Exams are open note take home. I would take this class again in a heart beat.
Professor Bapat is a great lecturer and he really knows what he's talking about. He is passionate about everything he says and makes it super easy to follow. The class consists of 3 exams and two papers, not too bad. I would 100% recommend this class with Bapat.
Bapat was awesome. He gave great lectures that were engaging and he was so clearly passionate about the subject that it was great to listen to. Attendance isn't required, but I would recommend bc the topic is so interesting. Graded off of 2 papers, participation, 2 midterms & a final, but the class is overall not hard. I would definitely take again
Professor Bapat was very knowledgeable about the content of this class and an engaging lecturer. The class has 2, 5 page papers, 2 midterms, 1 final, and a recitation participation grade. Overall, I think Bapat gave a good introduction and foundation to international politics.
I loved Dr. Bapat! He really cares about the course, and he really wants students to think critically and learn. Dr. Bapat is great at explaining topics clearly, and the course followed a coherent path. I would absolutely take Dr. Bapat again.
PROFESSOR BAPAT IS AWESOME!! I can't stress it enough, he is amazing. Take his class
You can tell Prof Bapat is smart and intelligent. But his lectures are mostly timelines of political events. Studying requiring a lot of memorization, he also did not give much guidelines on the final research project.
such an easy class, lectures not mandatory and all slides were uploaded online just to copy
Professor Bapat is not only extremely knowledgeable about the material but he genuinely cares about his students. All lectures are posted online and tests are easy to study for because they come directly from the PowerPoint slides he makes. I actually learned quite a bit from this course and would highly recommend it.
Bapat has been the best Political Science professor I have had at UNC. His 150 class is extremely easy while still being comprehensive. The course consists of 2 papers, 2 midterms, and a final, all of which are taken online at home. He is funny and has great stories, would recommend to anybody.
Dr. Bapat is the best professor I've had at UNC! He is very knowledgeable in the topic while making his lectures personable and engaging. The class consists of two essays, two midterms, and a final, all of which are open note and online. Getting an A in this class was very attainable and I also felt like I learned a lot from both Bapat and my TA.
Prof Bapat is awesome! His lectures are super interesting and he clearly really cares about students. He is also super flexible.
Professor Bapat was a great and very interesting lecturer. The class isn't hard if you go to class and put effort into your papers. He actually has a range of due dates for the essays, so don't wait until the end of the semester. Just make sure you attend recitation and do the reading for it.
Professor Bapat was very organized and clear about what was expected. Our class had very few assignments so each was important, but the grading was not difficult. This class is very manageable and Professor Bapat was very personable and made the lectures interesting.
Highly enjoyed this class and Prof. Bapat. He's a great lecturer and I learned so much from his class. It is not hard to do well if you do the work and put in effort for the few assignments. Highly recommend!
Professor Bapat is amazing. Attendance isn't mandatory for lectures(although his lectures are really good! So would recommend going). There is a lot of reading, but I briefly skimmed it and a lot of times I didn't look at the book at all and I did really well in the class. Not too difficult if you put some effort into it! Loved this class.
Awesome lectures with tons of info. Grade is based off of a few papers and online exams, so while this class requires a lot of reading, there is not too much pressure or time constraints. He also brings in amazing guest lecturers.
This professor is amazing. Available during office hours and genuinely cares about his students! He is an amazing professor and I would definitely take this class again!!!
I have been at UNC for 4 semesters now, and Bapat is by far my favorite professor. He is very knowledgeable about his subject areas and makes learning very accessible and interesting. To be completely honest, I was not planning on attending many lectures in his class, but after going to 2-3, I was hooked. Could not rate him highly enough. Awesome.
best poli sci professor. he speaks so clearly and eloquently. he truly is passionate about his work. attendance not mandatory but i made sure to go to class just to hear him speak. exams are online 10q and essay, 2 papers graded by TA. he lays everything out clearly so it is easy to do well. i HIGHLY recommend. hope i can take another class w him.
Prof. Bapat's lectures are great. He really knows his stuff. He communicates clearly and is easy to listen to. However, his tests were online and had a huge essay component. I was told by my TA these were graded based on a rubric, but we were never able to see the rubric or know what the rubric contained. Very annoying.
Professor Bapat is incredibly knowledgeable, and I especially enjoyed his lecture on terrorism, which is his area of specialty. The class is interesting, and all the exam's are take home.
All he does it complain and tell white people they are racist essentially. I came to your class to learn not for you to tell us how "bad" you've had it your whole life. We don't care, bro needs to grow a set.
Super inconsiderate to outside circumstances. Dry lectures, but sometimes he's a little funny. Be prepared to get disappointed by your grade in this class. Lectures are virtually pointless.
He does not care about his students at all. He lectures on and on and says nothing. Do not take him if you actually care about your grade because he CLEARLY doesn't. It is literally all about him. He just wants a pat on the back for his 'amazing' work in writing things.
Don't do it
Dr. Bapat was a phenomenal lecturer and I greatly enjoyed his classes. He made me want to attend class! He was a very hard grader and did not give clear instructions on our papers that were worth 70% of our grade combined and expected us to know exactly what he wanted. If you want a good lecturer but hard grader, take the class.
Attendance not mandatory which was helpful and the content was very interesting and he is an engaging lecturer. But very hard to get an A. Frustrating because he has very specific criteria for papers which he does not share and just expects us to hit very specific concepts that he may have barely even touched on in class. Super frustrating.
LOVED this class w Bapat. First class with him so I was a little nervous but he is an amazing professor and really pushes students to engage with material. Lectures were interesting and organized— even though there was no attendance I loved going. Exams done in a very unique way that helps prepare you for the IC or other high stress jobs
Great teaching format. Flexible attendance, not mandatory. The two papers carry 60% in the grading, but I believe every in-person lecture is worth attending. He has extensive knowledge, including current affairs. Grading is clear and timely. The syllabus, with information presented in an organized manner. He is my favorite professor at UNC.
Professor Bapat is incredibly knowledgeable and understanding. Attendance is not mandatory but he is such an amazing lecturer so I found myself going to every lecture. Grades are based on 2 paper, 1 policy brief, and 2 take home exams. Best POLI professor at UNC definitely take a class with him.
Bapat is amazing, very knowledgable and passionate about the topic which makes the lectures very engaging. Personally, the only problem was sometimes I found him to be a difficult grader- I would get points off for things that weren't mentioned in the rubric, so I didn't know to discuss them in my paper. Other than that definitely take this class!
Bapat is a really engaging lecturer and very good prof! Even though I ended with an A, I'll say, didn't think I would esp. because the papers don't have super clear grading criteria. He posts lecture slides/recording, its really interesting, & he basically outlined what we needed to know/talk about in the final on the last day so can't complain
Overall basic & easy class. Worth taking
POLI 150 with Prof. Bapat was super low maintenance. Attendance was optional, 3 exams including the final that are online and asynchronous, and you get to choose from 2 out of 10 papers to complete on your own time. I would take him for 150 if you can.
Professor Bapat was amazing! He was so knowledgeable and really cared about what he was teaching. His lectures were very interesting and the midterms were very attainable. Grades were combined of 2 papers (4-6 pages), 2 midterms, and a final. He encourages students to ask questions during lectures and has wonderful TAs!
Lectures were very interesting and attendance not required. Your grade really depends on your TA and there are not a lot of things to be graded on.
Great professor. Attendance isn't required, but take notes from the online presentations. two essays and three online exams.
Although attendance isn't required, I enjoyed his lectures and I think he's a super nice, entertaining guy. You get to pick which paper prompts you write and all exams are online, at home, open-note (don't need to read textbook, mostly covers lecture slides). Overall a very interesting class, he clearly cares a lot, and easy to do well.
Don't request a paper regrade from him. He dropped my grade by 5 points causing me to get an A- in the class, seemed weird and a little vindictive for some reason.
This class was meh. Attendance wasn't mandatory except for recitation--and the grading felt artificial. The midterms and the final weren't difficult at all, just make sure you include stuff you learned from recitation and in class in your answers. The papers were okay, again, not hard if you include info from class. Overall not my fav poli class.
Attendance is not required, but his lectures were interesting and needed for tests/papers, so I just watched them through Panopto. 2 essays and 3 online exams. In each exam, theres an essay prompt, but no rubric is given. TAs have a checklist of terms and your grade depends on that. Not a fan of that because it makes grading subjective
Super interesting lectures, respected our time! 2 unit exams and a cumulative final. 2 essays on diff prompts throughout the semester, overall a very doable workload. All exams were online and the lectures were always recorded. Go to recitaiton, participate there and you will be set. Paper grades were def harsher than other grades.
The way he grades his papers makes absolutely no sense. He gives you a prompt and a specific outline of how he wants the paper written, but when you follow those exact instructions he still gives you a low grade and doesn't clarify why you got that grade... the papers are 60% of overall grade in the class, making it hard to recover from the papers
Professor Bapat runs a good class. All lectures are recorded, attendance optional, midterm/final online. He's a good 150 professor, make sure you at least watch the lectures or go to class. Have 2 midterms, final, paper, and a few quizzes in your recitation. He's a good professor to have
