Excellent teacher, very interesting lectures and showed good movie clips. Gives long but good study guides for her tests. A lot of in-class group discussions. Truly an eye opening class.

Great teacher. Very intelligent. Very helpful with interesting lectures and class experiments.
She is an excellent professor. Has a lot of in class discussions that give you different points of view. The pictures and videos she shows in class are shocking but make you understand the harsh reality of our world.
Class discusions, papers, you need to keep on top of things but she is a very wise woman. It will change your veiw if you allow the course to really let you grow.
I just finish communication and cultural diversity class. Class was very informative Prof James is a great instructor she post mostly everything on blkboard alot of in class assignment and s/u counts attendance is important because of thev video you have to take notes on because on test the test are a little difficult but she curves alot!
I had Dr. James for a racism class. There were two exams. She is interesting in class. You watch movies and talk in small groups. There is not any homework or papers. She is not very clear about test material.
Comm and Diversity as a class is good, Dr. James is good, tests are HORRIBLE. It is not clear what is on them, and while she curves a lot, I got a D on my first test WITH the curve. You have to do all the readings and go to class. If you're not willing to do that, don't take this class.
Took her for Women and Comm. in the summer. Attended each class and participated extensively. Got a B+ on the major paper for the class. She said that would be my anchor grade and the rest of the classwork could bump it up or down. Got a B. E mailed her 2X to discuss - she never responded. I loved her class but ended up disappointed with her.
the class was vry informative. the tests espeically the first was difficult. but she gives you a page cheat sheet if you ask. she's very nice and the information you hear and see will galvanize your perspective. it's not an easy class but it's not that hard either. use common sense.
She is a vibrant and energetic professor. I learned so much in this course, she really keeps the material interesting! Yes the tests are ambiguous, but with the cheat sheet and readings you should try to do good because she curves. I definitelt recommend this great professor
Dr. James is an interesting professor with plenty of energy. The material in the Comm. & Diversity class, however, was very superficial and biased.
Dr. James is an excellent professor.I'm currently taking her SPC 3710.001 Com Diversity class and I find the topics to be very interesting. I also found I have learned a lot. I would definitely recommend this course with Dr. James.
Dont take her class!!! I took her for Racism in America. She pushes her opinions on her students. She acts like it is an open environment to speak your mind, but when you do she basically tells you you are an idiot. attendance is not manadatory, but the test questions are based on class discussions. I wouldnt take another class with her!
way too much info covered on midterm and final. it's the last day of the semester & she still hasn't graded our 5 assignments.... so there's no way of knowing our grades. also, she never replies to emails.
A no mind when thinking comes to critical/analytical/interpretive. the worst example of affirmative action, unfortunately. Avoid.
Ignore any comments that are bad about Dr. James. She is truly an amazing person and professor. She knows and loves what she teaches. Sometimes its not what everyone wants to hear (the subject matter is about race and diversity) but luckily for us, there is someone out there who isnt afraid to talk about it. always go to class, read the book!
Classes were based on discussion, readings were long but not very difficult, great teacher and very knowledgeable. Would take another class with her if she taught my major.
Great lectures. You'll do fine if you do all the reading and take good class notes. Exams are very specific questions so reading is important.
She is absolutely amazing...just do the reading! It will pay off for you. One of my favorite classes ever!
This is a junior-level course and I made the mistake of taking it as a freshman. Class seems easy, many projects and assignments but only a midterm and final for the whole year. Her "study guides" were basically everything we've ever covered and not very specific about what kind of questions will be on the test. Interesting class however.
She makes the class very interesting, however the midterm and final were CRAZY hard!!!! wayyyyy too much material on the study guides to go over by yourself. 90% of what's on the final isn't discussed in class. TONS of reading if you want to do well. I did enjoy coming to class though. it was so fun and interesting
I love love love Dr. James. She's very sweet, loves her students, and loves her profession. She's easy to talk to, and loves to help. Make sure you do the readings. She doesn't like slackers, and gets frustrated with those who don't care too much about their grades, which is NORMAL. She's an awesome professor and person, TAKE this professor :)
Dr. James is a great teacher and person. Her class was interesting. It was also quite easy. We had to write a papers and do a few group projects, but they were pretty easy and Dr. James is generous with grades.
Class was very interesting and enjoyable. Mid-term and final were very hard! Homework and other assignments were easy. DO THE READING AND TAKE NOTES ON IT!
Although she doesn't check if you read or not, you need to keep up with the reading! The midterm and final exams will be greatly affected.
Well because there is a poorly throughout limit on how much I can type I will make it brief and real. She's very intelligent, MUCH more than most, and that means MOST Dr.s,she's funny, very easy grader, and take it from me who knows whats up, listen closely to the things she says. There are not many prof s willing to say it. Take her.
I love her! She is a very smart woman and knows her stuff! I can not wait to take another class with her.
I really enjoyed this class. She causes a lot of debate in class, which makes the lectures interesting. She is a very sweet teacher and cares about her students, so she's there to help you if you need it! Just make sure to always go to class becuase there are some in-class assignments, and do the readings if you want to pass her tests.
Navita James is an awesome professor with great energy! She makes the class very fun and bearable during hard topics. Required books are a lot of work in conjunction with all of the writing assignments and presentations.
Con assigns s/u assignments. says u dont have to do all of them to pass but you do. Even tho they were s/u assignments they suddenly were weighted on blackboard which changed my grade by a whole letter. S/u assignments were not organized well.
I love Mrs. James! She is intelligent and makes the course interesting! Make sure you do all the assign readings and the S/U assignments they will pay off in the end. She provides a study guide that really helps, some may complain it's too detail but this is a 3000 level course. TAKE HER!
Professor James is really nice, however her classes are not the best. She provides students with an incredible amount of information, but she flies through the powerpoints and does not post them online to look at later. Her textbooks are three to four novels that you read out of for every class. Tests are very hard and the "study guides" don't help
I have taken Dr. James twice and DO NOT recommend taking a course with her if you have the choice. She is a very nice energetic woman, but her tests and lectures don't go together making the courses impossible.
Dr Navita James is a good Teacher. The class had a lot of material to read, but if you come to class and study you will be fine. I didn't think I was going to learn a lot, but I did. She also cares a lot about her students. I would take another class with her in a heartbeat.
Comm & Diversity was a fun & interactive class! I'm glad that I took it with Dr. James; she's nice & super helpful! During our 2nd test I was sick & coughing all over the place. I was tearing up & went to her to tell her how uncomfortable I was, she was so understanding & let me leave, then averaged my 1st exam and 3rd exam together. I got a B+! :)
While she is nice and passionate about the class material. Her tests are absurd regardless of the numerous study guides she gives you, it sucks. Her lectures are inconsistent with material tested. If you are not a minority your opinion in this class is irrelevant. This class is basically How to Become A Liberal Democrat 101. AVOID.
This class was the most interesting and provocative classes I've taken. Dr. James is a wonderful teacher and person. Can't wait to take another class with her! Do the S/U assignments and keep up with the reading and this class is super easy. be sure to go to class too. Each topic sparks a different debate. Very engaging and leaves you thinking.
While the in class lectures are fun and she's very passionate, I would not recommend her. Her tests and assignments do not correlate with her lectures, and the tests are extremely difficult even with the study guide given. Fun teacher, but awful way of teaching.
Smart, friendly, cares about her students, cares about educating ...
Favorite professor at USF so far. Loves teaching, super intelligent, and very fair. You have to study for her tests but she makes classes enjoyable. I recommend taking her class.
Overall a bad instructor. What bothered me the most was how she tested the students. The lectures covered a massive amount of content which would be responsible for half of the exam. The other half was based on the numerous articles she assigns before every test. The worst part is that the test questions were all information you have to memorize.
Too much material. Tests very hard. Random in-class assignments. Would not recommend.
This is a great class. Professor James is passionate and knowledgeable about the material. Lectures and readings are eye-opening and thought-provoking. You will have to readstudy, but she gives you study guides that cover almost everything that's going to be on each exam. Homework is very easy. Showing up for class is helpful for the exams.
Loved this professor and class! Her lectures were very interesting and she knows how to keep students engaged. A good amount of reading and homework assignments, but they are not boring. Her tests are pretty standard, if you pay attention in class and do the readings, you should do fine on the tests. Class was the reason I'm doing a comm. minor.
This class is easy as long as you show up do the assignments and read. The exams come straight from the readings. There are really sensitive topics spoken about and if you are even slightly conservative, be prepared to be offended.
Her tests are inconsistent with her "study guides," and they are literally impossible to pass. You are required to read about 30 articles for each exam and she will ask questions that are completely unrealated to the actual text. All of the assignments saved my grade. Would not recommend.
Dr. James made Communication & Cultural Diversity my favorite class. She is truly an inspirational woman who takes controversial topics and is able to speak on them respectively. She doesn't give a final and curves exam grades (theres 3 exams). Would definitely take again!
Rosenberg readings are "mandatory" but I didn't read it at all and still passed with an A, MUST attend class to pass the exams and because she does a lot of in class activities and all the homework you won't get credit if you don't attend the following class. Mrs. James is inspiring and overall one of my favorite classes, a discussion based class
You must go to class because a lot of in-class activities end up on the exams. Her study guides aren't very consistent and helpful so studying for this class is a challenge. There's a lot of reading and use of the books so you'll need to keep up with the readings. She discusses controversial things in class and is very liberal in her view.
Dr. Navita James cares about women and their lived lives and our choices. The work was professional as if we were in the workplace. She put tools in our toolbox which many professors do not. Gathering in class was great and not pressure. Dr. Navita James is warm, with a wonderful smile. I would take any class she teaches. Excellent!
Very inspiring woman. Very democrat/liberal opinions but as a conservative I still learned a lot and found the class to expand my knowledge. Lots of interesting discussions. Easy assignments. I mostly read the readings and got a B+. I would recommend the class. No final exam. Not an easy A, but a possible A.
Interesting and engaging lectures. She uses in-class activities to determine attendance, so if you miss class you will get zeroes on work even if you submitted it online. Only three exams, but you have to read all of the assigned sections to pass. My biggest advice: Read the textbook, scan through the course documents a few times. You'll do fine.
Attendance is not mandatory but if you do not go to class you may skip out on exercises that appear on the tests that are in class only exercises. The lectures are very good. The study guides for the tests are a bit confusing. I would do about half of the readings assigned and go to all of the lectures and average a B+ on each of the tests.
Dr. James teaches a really interesting and insightful course. There aren't that many assignments, but it is very easy to get an A if you read and participate. She picks really interesting books and articles to read outside of class. This is where I learned the most.
Dr. James is nice and a very impressive person. Some parts of her class are a little outdated. Attendance isn't technically mandatory but a lot of things on the exam are only covered in class, and she does a lot of in-class activities. Not a great class if you're introverted, as every class you're required to interact in some way. Lots of reading.
Take this class you will learn things about yourself that you never thought.
I loved this class and Professor James is great, the only issue is the test scores are weighted too heavy, so despite all the hard work put into written assignments and in-class assignments, the grade is all about the test scores and they are not easy tests at all. Lots of reading but the topic is interesting.
I absolutely loved Professor James' class on cross cultural communication and diversity. She has such a lovely aura and has a way of making her students feel comfortable and respected. I will never forget the things I learned in this class, and would recommend it for any major!
I would not recommend this course to a student who is in need of A's, as this course is extremely test heavy, and the tests require large amounts of memorization from the textbooks. Her lectures do not correlate with the textbook/exam content. Office hours are only by appointment, and she ignores her emails so it is difficult to schedule to see her
This professor was ok. We had something like 100 students and the lectures were interesting. I just did not like the tests. We studied the review and the test was different from what we studied. It was more like a memorization thing than a learning thing. I would not take it again.
Dr. James is a very nice lady, but not a great teacher. She rushes through lectures and gives very little detail on assignments. If you don't show up to class you will not pass the class. She is very bad at responding to emails, if she ever even responds to you. The study guides for the test are ridiculously long and don't even help.
Very tough, she only has three exams that are like 80% of ur grade. Show up to class and you still may not get a A or B.
Professor James is generally a nice person and precise with her instructions. However, the tests are very specific to the information in the textbook and are proctored. The tests can only be accessed the day they're due. Other than the tests, this class is not difficult and has many interesting topics.
Professor James was sometimes hard to get a hold off b/c's she had T.A.'s that helped out, so the communication was non-existent at times. All tests were proctored online in canvas and was the most nerve racking experience of taking a test. Take something else if you can, because sympathy seemed non-existent. If you want to take it, good luck!
Professor James is a good Professor though do not take a class with her if you want an easy A, her tests are tough and you have to memorize a lot of information. She does not communicate very well though at times. Dont slack off and youll be fine.
very sweet lady, but her "study guides" were pages of unnecessary articles. So much information that it was impossible to study, plus most of it didn't even end up on the exams. The content and class discussions were interesting, but exams and assignments were unbearable.
I had Dr. James for two classes (Comm & Cultural Diversity and Intercultural Communication) and the only problem I really have with her classes is that the study guides always seem very vague, especially when the exams are so weighted. Exams are pretty rough, but all other assignments were easy.
The quizzes are all that matters in this class and there are a little hard. She rarely reply to emails. There is not extra credit in this class and professor takes forever to grade assignments.
Loved the lectures and the content we learned about, but the grading system set up is awful. It seems that the three tests are really the only thing that matters. This really stressed me out as the tests are insanely difficult and studying is almost useless. There is so much content we are taught and questions are insanely specific.
This was a class I was looking forward too. it quickly became a radically divided class with multiple students speaking out in the matter within certain subjects, a hard time to recover from what we were suppose to be learning from. there where points that racially divide the clarification its online discussion piece and derailed the conversation.
AHHH I loved this class so much. Dr.James is awesome, the tests aren't as bad as they seem, but the study guides for the tests are a lil overwhelming. If you have more.. mm.. 'empathetic' views the content will mostly be common knowledge, but I noticed the class was a lil more difficult for the more close-minded folks.. 100% take it!!!
This was my favorite class I have ever taken at USF. I left class every day feeling refreshed and like I learned something new. Professor James is very wise and enjoys class discussions. It is true though, the study guides are not too helpful, but if you note what she says rather than what is on the PowerPoint, you will be good for tests.
She worked with me to complete the course online for a C-, Its a hybrid course but in person participation is required to receive credit on assignments. I had to stop attending mid way through the semester due to family issues and having to fly home but she worked with me for me to earn a C-.
Professor James is not bad-she is just a very slow grader. Her feedback is picky, and you have to make sure you follow the rubric to a t.
I like her as a professor, but studying for the exams was hard. There are in class activities so attendance is important.
I took this class online so I can not speak for how she is as a professor, she seems very nice. But the tests were VERY difficult and she never gave us any reviews or guidance on what to study, just to "read the textbook". Also the tests even though they are online are not open note or open book. First time ever at USF getting a C and that's why.
She is an extremely slow grader; as of today, we are one month away from the school year being over, and she has only graded the first two assignments. If you have a problem in the class, good luck getting a response within two weeks. My teachers at USF have been really good, except for her; she is just terrible.
Worst teacher I've ever had
The course is 60% Exam based which can weigh your grade down very FAST. I am very organized and love to take notes, but she goes so fast I can't even finish hearing what she said before she has already moved on. Also what people say/do in class can be turned into a question on the exam. I have never felt more lost in a course.
Genuinely the worst professor I've ever had, doesn't respond to emails, grades as if she's throwing darts blindfolded at a rubric. Nothing is consistent, nothing is clear, and nothing is fun. I love learning but she has made it miserable.
Probably the worst professor I've had. I took the class online and she had some of our assignments worth zero part of our grade. I emailed her 4 times in the beginning of the semester and it's still not fixed. Our grades were 60% quiz based that are proctored, closed note, closed book, timed, and only have one attempt. There is also NO extra credit.
