She is an amazing teacher! Yes there is a lot of work, but it is easy work! There are no test and everything is a grading contract, so your papers wont be a percentage, it will be complete or incomplete. And you can even negotiate to get rid of assignments! I would take her again!
She's an awesome professor and person.. She just gives a lot of work at one time. Also when lecturing it takes forever.
Professor Villanueva is a great teacher for learning how to write online. She will teach you how to blog, how to use twitter, and how to revise your writings online. You can pass easily by using the workshops to revise your papers. If you turn in your assignments on time, participate, and attend class; you will pass.
So she has this thing called a grading contract where nothing you turn in is for a grade, but is checked for being adequate enough to count as turned in. Everything that is not good enoughnot turned in counts against you, even attendance. She was so wonderful and although the homework is stupid (like Tweeting on Twitter) I would take again
One of the best professors I've ever had. There was a lot of work, and something due almost every class, but all you have to do is be sure to stay on top of the work because it really isn't that hard of work. She teaches clearly, and has writing workshops to help you out. She gives you a week to revise papers, and gives great feedback.
She Is great, mainly grades on completion so make sure to stay on top of your assignments. There will be homework but nothing too bad, as long as you turn something in shell will give you extra time to finish. However do not everything to the last minute.
She is very good at teaching English to students that need more help. Do not be afraid of the grading contract. If you attend class and give a good effort you will do fine. You will not need the textbook.
I took this class over summer. Its easy if you stay on track and do what she asks! shes super helpful and has a great grading process. She doesn't give you an A or a B, she looks do see if you did the assignment correctly and that's how you get a complete. Essays aren't bad, and the assignments are pretty simple and really fun! I loved her class.
Dr. V is absolutely amazing. She is great at providing helpful feedback in a timely manner and she really did a good job making sure everyone knew what they needed to do. She also provided help whenever it was needed through email or in person. Her assignments aren't difficult! No tests or exams! TAKE THIS CLASS YOU WILL LEARN SO MUCH AND LOVE IT!!
As a class you agree on a grading contract as to what constitutes an A in the class. She's very good at what she does and knows what she's talking about, though more liberal than the average professor. She gives good feedback and is willing to work with you if any problems occur. I would most definitely taker her class again.
Wonderful professor and a fun class. She is great about trying out different styles of writing (not just essays).
Grades on potential so if you don't look like you care, you won't pass. Is really liberal and open minded & love that she doesn't follow the bandwagon of other English teachers on what they teach. Whole class is just lectures but make sure you pay attention it's actually interesting. No textbook but h.w. due every class.
Taking this class has made me a better writer. She is completely different from any other English teacher. She is original is her teaching ways. Expect homework due every class day. No tests. She is very helpful.
Great writing experience in this class, she lets you write however you want as long as it meets her very few requirements. Great feedback, good and solid lectures that really do help you understand aspects of writing. Lots of writing assignments. You don't need the textbook, you just to the articles she assigns you to read and respond to.
This class is very easy and the topics are actually very interesting. She negotiates a grade contract, which allows students to pass the class very easily. She is a very funny and canceled class a lot. She is very accepting of all students and lets you write about anything you want. She is a good choice for English 101!
A teacher I won't forget. Her work is flexible, if you're a writer who doesn't like to be constrained, this is a class for you. It's based on blog posts, grammar assignments, and essays. She gives you some passes for more time. Grading is a little confusing but helpful simultaneously. She's a common choice for hs students bc she's so chill. 10/10
Dr. V is awesome, knowledgable and caring! I would definitely take her class again, if I could. Unlike your traditional educator, Dr. V runs her class totally different. There is a lot of work to be done outside of class, ranging from blog posts to essays. You are in control of your grade based on a grade contract model. Attendance matters.
She has a lot of little homework assignments that can be hard to keep track of but they are pretty easy. She's very clear on what she wants and how she wants it, even though most of the time the formatting is up to you! She also gives really good feedback if you bring your essay in for peer editing during class time, it's extremely helpful
Dr.V easily was my favorite teacher I had last semester. I loved her attitude and the unique style of the class. All of the essays assigned helped me grow as a writer and taught me something. Her grading is very generous and she is on top of giving you appropriate feedback. There was a small textbook we used twice, but most reading was provided.
I loved her! she was so awesome. She does a grading contract and in order to get an A you really have to try. You do blog posts which honestly helped me become so comfortable with writing. She gives great feedback and i wish she taught every English class I have to take after this one!
Dr. VIllanueva, is awesome highly recommend her she makes it easy to understand and makes you think outside the box, her class is very different from what I am used to, but I would gladly take her again she gives great feedback and helps you become better in writing and more comfortable! Trust me you want to take her!
she's a super cool lady, but she's cancelled class about 6 times so far this semester. despite that, she gives really meaningful assignments that actually use your critical thinking skills, and definitely pushes you to be a better writer. kinda dry lectures, but makes up for it with her unconventional grading system.
She is a very good teacher; however, she gives out a lot of work. Her lectures are very long and very boring. The best thing about this class is in the beginning she takes a class to discuss how we would like our grading system to be like. The professor herself if very kind and funny, but I wouldn't ever take her class again.
Dr. V gives good feed back if she gets back in a timely matter. Twice I had to email her for feed back. The lecture is very dry lots of talking little interaction, i.e in class work but a ton of homework. Not a good class if you go to school and work full time. Just to much homework.
She canceled class 8 time for the whole semester-6 of which was before midterms, she told the class today that she could careless if we paid attention/learned anything. Lots of busy work and a very dry lecture. Would never take her class again
Professor V is tough. Be prepared to do the work. Don't fall behind. She's not your traditional teacher but her method is amazing. She wants to see each student be their best and what more can you ask for from a teacher. She gives you the tools to succeed and is always willing to help you improve your writing. Be prepared to thing outside the box.
Prof V. was amazing during the first month of school. She was a good teacher who gave great feedback, and she had a good sense of humor. Then, Route 91 happened which she was at, and she was not the same again. Grading became inconsistent, and she cancelled class a lot because of sickness. Would take again because I think this semester was abnormal
Don't take this class if you're prone to anxiety or procrastination. TONS of writing assignments. I liked that we got to do blog posts, but that was on top of 5 essays. Class itself is extremely boring; we didn't really learn anything, and the assignment expectations are kinda vague. I like Dr. V as a person but I struggled to keep up in her class.
You do blogs which are made to help your writing, and 5 essays, very easy. She'll make you do the assignment over up till right, if you don't she'll help you. NOT TRADITIONAL GRADES, at the end of the semester you talk to her about your grade. At the beginning of the year, there is a Rubric for grades. effort, and contentgrade, not mistakes made.
I didn't like her in the beginning but you learn to like her. There are 5 essays and blog posts. You get to write about whatever you want. You can get extra credit. The grading is not the ordinary grading. She lets you redo the assignments for a better grade. Come to class. Show up to class, you get an A. If you need help, definitely ask.
The workload can be a little heavy sometimes but you get used to it. She makes you do blog posts about certain readings and they do improve your writing. Her lectures are pretty long but easy to follow through. She can be pretty funny too
Professor Villanueva is so hilarious. She really cares for all her students and she explains everything in detail. Beware that this class involves a lot of assignments, if your a procrastinator than this class isn't for you. She has a unique grading system, not a normal traditional that everyone is familiar with. Overall one of the best classes!
Not going to lie, I was debating dropping the class after seeing all of the assignments that we had to keep up with. Although it was a lot, you will be able to learn how to manage it all and you will get used to it. I really did learn a lot in this class and became less scared of the writing process.
Canceled class EIGHT times this semester. I understand health issues can suddenly come up but she barely made an effort to keep us caught up with lectures, etc. I asked around to compare assignments and this was by far the class with the heaviest workload. With a bonus of the most mind numbing lectures you could ask for. Will never take her again.
Nayelee is an amazing professor who inspires her students to do their best. Attendance is mandatory if you want to negotiate for the higher grade you want. Participate and you're golden. There are blog posts as homework that are fun. She does miss class a lot (a total of 7 times this semester), however, she is a 1 October survivor. Awesome prof.
Dr. Villanueva does assign a lot, but it forces us to write and become better (I write so much better now than when I started). The work isn't hard at all, just need to plan your time right. I definitely came out thinking differently about subjects and topics. You choose your own topics for essays. Grading is different but helpful.
Overall, there was lots of work but expected for a writing class. Work wasn't hard just a lot of reading and writing. The blogs were the best. You can write freely and in your own style. Essays aren't long and you choose your own topic. She's extremely helpful and available. Responds quickly to emails and doesn't mind questions. Fair grading.
I liked the class. Different than high school classes. She encouraged more critical thinking rather than regular boring writing. I liked how we could say what we wanted and write about what we wanted especially with the blogs. Essays weren't difficult, she just made sure you pushed boundaries with our ideas. Not your typical teacher for sure.
Pretty decent. Just be sure to watch the online lectures since it is an online class. She does online voice/video conference to review your essays with you before the final in case you don't understand something. Super easy and helpful. Not as stressful as I thought it would be for an online class.
102 class. A 4 week class and was fast but it was pretty easy to follow as long as you did what you were supposed to. No grades on individual assign. Just complete the standard. You write one major research essay for the entire class and all the assignments help you complete it. You voice conference w/ her to review the essay before the final.
Blog writing and four essays. Readings were interesting. Pretty easy to follow for an 8 week class. Watch the videos in the modules. Everything we needed was in the modules. Required Voice conference with her about your drafts before turning in the final. That helped in case you dont understand the assignment. Emails back quickly.
I took it online and you write blogs, essays and do some readings and listen to a podcast. The modules have what you need to complete the assignments. She provides feedback on all assignments and essays drafts and also meets with you through online conference so you know what you need to do before the final copy. Do the work and you'll be fine.
Lots of reading/writing. It helps if you want to become a better writer. Required meetings for each essay. She reviews what areas you need to improve on before submitting the final copy. Contract grading which is nice because you get to revise work without being penalized. Basically do the work and you will be fine. Get to write your own topics.
Yes, lots and lots of writing!! The work isn't too difficult but can get overwhelming if you fall behind. She walks you through everything and even reviews essay assignments in the one on one meetings (you get to pick the day and time). Blogs are the best part. Like everyone else commented, do the work and you will pass.
Manageable class. Plenty of writing and practice to get better at writing. My writing improved over the semester. Not having individual grades helped and she was always available to answer questions when I had them. Lots of work but not hard at all. It's a relief not having to worry about grades honestly. Just do the work and you are all good.
There are four essays in this course, and a lot of assignments. This course is not easy, and I wouldn't suggest it to anyone who is just starting college, but she is a great teacher. She truly wants to read her students articles, and she really does care.
Lectures almost every day. Some are optional. You decided by class vote how we wanted the grading system to be very cool! You have one on one teacher meetings every so often. She checks your essays and is very helpful. I couldn't come up with a topic one time, so she emailed me a list of topic ideas. A very nice teacher would take again!
At the beginning of the semester, before quarantine, she had cancelled at least 4 classes out of the few that we had in the first place. The blog posts, while they seem like a cool alternative, are usually tedious and stressful. Ive been stressing over my grade for this class as she doesnt input them into canvas and hasnt gotten back in 5 days.
For the first time in college I could write my thoughts about a subject or reading. Sure there is a lot of writing but thats to be expected in a college writing course. If youre trying to literally do nothing and get a good grade this class isnt for you. Think, read, and write! Basically all of college. You have to try hard to fail.
A weird semester with going online. I was looking forward to the class and enjoyed the in person classes. Going online, I really appreciated she was there the entire time. It made the transition easier and alot less stressful. She created videos, answered questions, online conference, always communicated. She was flexible & understanding!
I'm a student who has been out of college for a long time. I was worried this class would be hard since I struggled with my first writing class before. Let me tell you, this class was refreshing to say the least. She provided everything you needed, topics were interesting, we had freedom, no grades. As someone else said, you have to try to fail!
Dr. Villanuevas class was a good class for me who struggles with writing. The one on one meetings about our papers were helpful because she walks through your strengths and weaknesses. Also, her feedback on blogs is nice because she comments on what we have to say. Not a hard class. Effort and improvement are key to passing the class.
I took Dr. V for the 4 week ENG 102 online class. The class is straightforward. You write one argumentative research essay with a topic of your choice but all of the assignments in the class build into the actual essay at the end. She provides extensive feedback that is specific to our topic and what we wrote. The videos she created were helpful!
I've taken both 101 and 102. You need a book for 101, no book for 102. Her grading isn't by letters it's completing your assignments on time. You can turn in 3 late and 2 missing to get an A. I suggest getting it done on time because its easy to fall behind. Also the assignment build up to your essay. More work in the beginning less for the essay.
There are quite a bit of writing assignments but they are not difficult. Respond to reading assignments via blog writing. You have four essays. Watch the videos bc they show you how to write each essay She meets with you to review your final draft. There is a grade contract so there is no final grades until the end and you meet with her about them.
I took her a semester ago so I don't exactly remember everything but I do know that I would take her again! The assignments were fun and challenging. We listened to podcasts and you got to choose what topic to listen to. A lot of my friends complained about their ENG profs but I didn't when I had her!
She was a good teacher, just so many assignments. So much criteria, 500 words min., & 2 responses to others on a blog page. 40+ min Podcasts to listen & respond to. She lets you "pick" your final grade based on HER criteria & point system; I didn't have a grade until I saw it on my transcript 3 weeks later. Wouldn't recommend if you're full time!
Definitely lots of writing but its a 5 credit writing class so I expected it. The assignments are NOT hard at all. I was expecting worse. The class and teacher decide the grading which is just complete your assignments and youll pass. She meets with each student to review work and help us. Hard to fail this class. I learned a lot about writing.
Dr V is an awesome professor and by taking her class helped me become a better writer. It's an easy class as long as you do what is expected along with asking questions and she is always accessible outside of class and cares about students understanding what is being taught and doing well and she is always willing to help out.
Online class was super organized which helped in staying focused on what you have to do in the class. She answers emails quickly and is always willing to help no matter the question. You meet with her to review final essays which helped me a lot because she explained things well. Grading is different but works. Do the work and you'll be fine.
Took for summer 8week course and there was a lot of homework. But grading was very fair. Gave lots of opportunities for extra credit.
I cant really say much about this prof because I hardly did the work in the class because I was feeling horrible for the entire course. She did however understood my situation and gave me as much time as possible to catch up on my work since the summer semester was almost at the end. But I will say that there is a lot of work for just four weeks.
She has her own grading criteria based on the amount of assignments you do. Completion grade, essay every two weeks, summarys, and blog posts.
She is an amazing women and is truly inspiring to me. Amazing course.
She gave us lots of time to work on all the papers we did and all the class lectures built up to the essays. She gives very clear instructions, outlines, and even example essays on what she's looking for. She also does one-on-one meetings after each essay to give you a chance to improve your work. Great Class.
4 total essays with the freedom to write about any topic. Must create a blog for assignments about the textbook. All essays have a 1v1 meeting, the Professor is great to talk to and is helpful in improving your writing. The grading system is unique. All students start the class with a B. Very difficult to fail this class if you do the work.
She cancels class a lot, and not clear on what will be graded and how it will be graded.
Good class and would take again. People complain about the grading but it is actually straight forward. Just do the work and you will do fine. She provides clear feedback and helps you. You get to resubmit assignments. You meet with her to review final essays. Actually learned a lot about writing
Lots of writing and assignments but they weren't hard though. Attendance wasn't mandatory but we agreed to that as a class. She uses a grading system that is different than regular system. Just do the work and she gives you feedback. If you mess up you can keep redoing the assignment without penalty. Online meetings to review essays.
Eng online class. Everything is organized and her videos make the assignments easy to understand. Grading is different (Complete or incomplete) which makes it easy to follow. You get to redo assignments if needed. Feedback is good. Emails back and communicates. She offers meetings online for essays or just if you need extra help. Easy online class.
Recommend. Ive been out of school for a long time and was worried about all the technology like the blogs. She made it easy to understand and was always available to help when I needed it. I learned alot about writing especially since I wasnt good at it when I was in school before. Getting to redo assignments was super helpful.
Highly recommend. Organized online class with clear instructions and videos. Gives feedback on all the writing and reviews final essays through a conference online. Responds to emails quickly.
Would take again. Online class is easy to navigate. Good feedback.
I took the in-person class and although her lectures were informative and helpful for the assignments, they were long and a little boring. Lots of students quit attending the lectures and/or left early in the middle of class. However, she's very nice and all of her assignments are graded by completion which made it a lot easier.
Great online class. Easy to follow, tons of materials to show you how to do the work, and she is available when you have questions. I was worried about taking writing online, but once I got going, it wasn't a problem. Plus, you get to write about what you want which is a bonus!
Dr. Villanueva is the best teacher I have ever had. Her class is focused on benefitting her students and helping them genuinely learn. She gives great feedback on essays and assignments and comments on both the work's positive and negative attributes. Her lectures are easy to follow and incredibly engaging. Plus she is really funny!
She uses a grading system that is different than regular system. Just do the work and she gives you feedback. If you mess up, you can keep redoing the assignment without penalty. Online meetings to review essays. Also, there's a few blog post and 4 essays including the final one a month.
I was worried at first since this was a four week class and writing is not my strong area, but it ended up being great. The assignments led to the final research essay and she gave feedback for everything and was available for help whenever. Required meetings to review drafts. AI was partially permitted with required reflections. Would take again!
She is an overall good teacher and it's really easy to get an A in her class if you just do all the work but its a really intense amount of work a week. She did cancel class a lot for my class which made it a bit difficult for some assignments. She's not a bad teacher but if you have other options that are better choose those first then come back.
She's an amazing instructor who gives out detailed lectures so if you end up failing then you did not pay attention.
This was a good class. There is a lot of writing but that makes sense since it is a writing class. The assignments were not hard. She gives you everything you need to be successful you just have to be willing to ask for help and do the work. You can't really fair unless you do nothing.
I was happy I took this professor. She was really helpful with giving detialed feedback on my writing and anytime I had questions, she was always willing to help. We could write about whatever topic we wanted and had a lot of choice for reading assignments. Not a hard class at all just don't procrastinate.
Took this as an online class. She gives you everything you need including videos, examples, and resources to help you write your assignments. We had options for what we could write about. The blogs were fun because I could get creative. She was always available to answer my questions and meet if I needed. Great professor!
Was an online and it was a lot of work but it wasnt hard at all. Just don't procrastinate because you can easily fall behind. All the information was organized. The videos and instructions were easy to follow. She uses a grade system that lets you revise as many times as you need which is helpful since I am not the best at writing. Good feedback.
Lots of writing. She was helpful when I asked questions. Blogs took some getting used to but in the end I liked them because I could put my spin on it. She gives lots of feedback so you know what you need to do. Overall a good online class.
This class was enjoyable, her feedback was very helpful. She gave opportunities to redo assignments after feedback was given. Would take again.
The answer is yes if you are on the fence about choosing this English 101 professor. Her grading style is different from others, but it is worth it. She gives room for fixing without it affecting your grade. She's very detailed and cares about the success of her students. I liked this professor, she's quite the woman. Good Luck!!!!!
I like how she grades where she has a contract for grades and she has helped me a lot during assignments and essays and taught me a lot and at the end I got an A.
Professor Villanueva writes paragraphs of feedback that reshaped my essays and other work. Her feedback not only highlights your errors, but it also outlines the way to fix them--what to do. I am happy to have her as an English professor, and I would definitely take this class again!
Professor Villanueva provides in depth and constructive feedback. Her modules have a ton of information and she explains everything so well. However, most weeks there are 4-6 assignments but she takes forever to mark them complete - if she marks them at all. It can be frustrating if waiting for feedback on an assignment before moving.
Took the online class. It had everything we need to get the assignments done. She does give good in-depth feedback and everything is broken down to build into the essays. The class is more about process not perfection so that helped me because I get anxiety with writing. Overall good class and would take again.
Was a good online class. She gave good feedback and ideas to help you put your essay together. The grade system helped me. I'm not good at writing so I didn't have to stress alot about my writing or worry about failing. Just do the work. She's helpful.
