If you like philosophy, you'll enjoy his tutorial. He's really helpful and nice.
we luv you Neil
Neil rocks!!! i always looked forward to his tutorials. wish there were more like him around.
not so good
brutal!
Neil really helped me get through my first year. He is way better than other teaching assistants I had.
Neil was great. He is not too hard a grader, and he will re grade your essay again if you think you deserve a better mark. If your essay has a thesis and good grammar you get a B. Don't miss the beginning of tutorial b/c that's when he summarizes the readings.
Niel is really hot. He has this sexy thing going on - I can't explain it!
He is my favorite Prof (for me he is not just a TA) at York. Exceptionally intelligent and very articulate. I must say i had a crush on him. For all of you talking this class with Neil u r lucky...
He is a really good prof! Very clear with the course content, explains everything about the readings. You must definitely go to class or you miss out on a lot. Pretty much gives the test questions through his weekly practice questions. Overall great prof, def reccomend him!
Good Proff. Explains the material very well. In my opinion it is more important to take notes when he talks in the lecture about the material than reading and taking notes on own. Does a great Job
One of the most interesting course I have taken at York so far. I'm a math major so I wanted to take a course that can test my reading and writing and this course was so interesting that I just wanted to read the course material all the time! Very good professor and puts a lot of effort to explain in detail the main points of the readings.
Neil is an amazing prof, also had him as my TA. He really makes the class very entertaining. Attendance in tutorial is not necessary unless you don't understand the material it is very helpful. I didn't really like all the reading cause sometimes I didn't understand them but once you go to lectures you will. Overall great course, very interesting!!
Neil is an amazing prof. Very clear and approachable, really easy to receive an A in this class.
Amazing professor (TA as well). His lectures are soo interesting! He uses a lot of expression & different tones of voice, which engages you into the lecture, rather than making you falling asleep. In tutorial, he might talk a lot, goes through every question and makes sure you understand the content. Very flexible & understanding! Will remark papers
Neil helped me not only become a better writer & student but also was able to give advice regarding other academic issues. He challenged me to think outside the box more than I even thought myself capable of. If you are a good reader & are up for the challenge, take this course! Not an easy A but will teach you a lot about university level answers.
Probably my favourite class for my first year. Attend either lecture andor tutorial. Although the courses has a lot of readings, Neil summarizes and analyzes the readings during his lecture. Marks depend on the TA. Make sure you have him or get a good TA then you should be able to obtain an A.
Neil is amazing. Be sure to get him as your TA. If you do not read the material, you will not succeed. If you read the material and participate in tutorial, you will succeed. Budget 4-5 hours per week to read and you will be fine.
Neil is amazing! Encourages students to do readings before class, but even if you don't he summarizes the readings so well. Truly cares about his students, he makes things a little tricky because he wants his students to grow and be the best they can be academically (had a heart to heart talk in lecture). Two thumbs up for Neil
I had him as a tutorial leader and would not suggest him if you require multiple explanations to understand a topic. Is extremely understanding. Does have a tendency to ramble, but he knows it and its conscious of it. Expects critical thought for his tests. Definitely have to work hard for your mark.
Hands down the best prof ive had (and TA). Explains everything in great detail, and makes the lectures interesting. His tests are fair, if you understand the content, do the readings and attend lecture you will do well. Best professor at york
I loved Neil's lectures/tutorials. His passion for the subject is evident through his lectures which is admirable and encouraging. Readings and novels are very interesting though quite complex and lengthy. Critical analysis of text is necessary but he reviews the material thoroughly. Neil is extremely intelligent, approachable, and helpful!
Simply amazing!!! It can be overwhelming for a first year class, but professor Braganza explains each reading in GREAT DETAIL during lectures- so don't worry if the readings are sometimes difficult. If you come to lectures and tutorials and take extensive notes, you will do well guaranteed.
Braganza is a great prof! He's very passionate about the subject. The readings are sometimes heavy but he breaks them down in lecture very well, so they are very important to attend. Tests are more than fair, if you do the questions and attend tutorials.
Neil is an amazing professor, who is passionate and full of enthusiasm. Every lecture has every student completely engaged. Want to do well in his class? Read everything and take detailed notes! Prepare for tests, and don't be afraid to meet him outside of class. Take this course for the credit and leave as a better student.
The prof has his own analysis and expects you to throw it back at him, he is not interested in your own analysis of the papers. Lots of reading and interpretation needed as most the time he is vague.
Neil is a great professor and makes the boring topics interesting. He doesn't use power points or any form of technology during lecture so make sure you attend and take detailed notes. Have good notes from lectures and do the readings to do well in the class. Agata Mergler was an AMAZING TA that I would highly recommend.
Professor Braganza is my favourite professor at York for his informative lectures and the best books and articles that he assigns. Summer school with him, assigned readings every week w/ questions about the reading. When 10/12 assignments were finished do not need to attend tutorial but recommend you attend to do well on final exam.
The course is very heavy on both lectures and readings, so you need to show up to lectures and tutorials to do well. I found that tutorials were helpful, and Neil was a great TA. It's obvious that he really loves the content and that shows through his teaching. While the course is kind of dull and heavy, he was a great prof and made it enjoyable.
His lecture material is very helpful, and he covers a lot. Do not skip lectures if you want to do well. He's good for a professor, but he's a tough marker, so not so much of a good TA. He was not my TA, but he graded my work extremely hard compared to my TA. Course itself has a lot of readings & prof expects you to spend at least 5 hours doing each
Neil was the best! He was so passionate during his lectures and was also very organized and even lenient. He made sure you understood the readings before moving on. There was a lot of reading to do and you needed to go to lecture and tutorials to pass but he made them worth while. Having him as my TA saved my mark. Definitely my favourite prof!!
1825 has lots of content/ readings. Neil's lectures are fascinating. He's also very friendly and quite funny. If you always attend/ pay attention in lecture you COULD get away with not doing the readings. Participation in tutorial matters, grading is all in-class essay style tests on the latest reading.
Had prof Neil for summer school and he was amazing. It was my first year class at uni so it was a bit challenging for me but he really broke everything down in lecture. You have to attend lecture and tutorial to do well. A tough marker for sure but still very supportive, cute and funny. Would definitely take a class with him again!
This was a tough class but if you put in the work you can do well. Professor Braganza was also my TA and he really inspired my future studies. He made legal philosophy interesting and engaging. He is a fair and reasonable marker. You attend lecture and study hard, you can do well.
Work hard and you will do well. Neil is a real gem.
Best prof ever, very kind and caring. Just do your readings, and come to class. Easy to get a good mark.
Neil is a very caring professor. Although the course was heavy, his lectures are always interesting. He sometimes relates his lectures to our own understanding. Like all others: if you work hard, you can get a good mark. For once, I find the lectures useful than the tutorials. His lectures gives more details and insight needed for tests.
Hated this course with everything inside me. There is a lot of reading, & if you're not a big reader or enjoy text that is relatively outdated, I advise not to take the class. His thoughts during lectures are all over the place & no notes or slides are provided so you have to attend. 6 tests, 10 reading assignments (which are looong).
I loveeeeee this class!!! Do your work and listen to lectures, and you will be fine. Also the professor is amazing too!
This class is no easy course especially in the summer. There is no power point slides. The reading assignments are long you need to do 10 to pass. 6 exams worth 15% each and 10% attendance .The material is interesting and the prof was great. Go to class and take a lot of notes you will will do well in this course.
Loved this class! Thank you Prof Braganza
Best lectures from this prof! Very interesting
Neil was okay. He himself was a great guy but lectures were kind of all over the place and very difficult to understand w no ppt. was decently understanding to an extent. unnecessarily long weekly assignments, lots of books to buy, language difficult to understand w little explanation. this class will make you cry. Neil was nice and funny though.
You are given 6 tests and weekly assignments which is what your entire grade is based on. As well, the prof DOES NOT average grades but rather add them. So its like #/15 divided by 6. That's your grade. If you do the weekly assignments and are either late to tutorial, leave early, or don't participate enough you won't get full marks for assignments
This is a first year course but the TAs mark the 6 tests given with the difficulty of a 3rd year grading criteria. I got an A in this course but I worked very hard for it, I had taken a reduced course workload to pass the course. I went almost every week to see the prof and Ta for help. When we got our tests back it was some of the worsts moments.
Great prof! Heavy course load with lots of readings and 6 books to purchase. It would be best to take this course in the summer on its own. However: the prof and TA's are very helpful. Worth taking!
Professor Braganza is my favorite professor at York. His lectures are clear and engaging. The course is mostly tests, but I like that because I find essay writing hard. Your success in the course depends on the tutorial you are in. I am in Neil's tutorial, I'm doing well. Some of the other TAs mark way harder.
From my experience, Neil has been a very considerate and understanding professor who has always provided us with helpful information regarding tests alongside translating a great deal of complex information that helped foster more understanding behind the readings etc. YES 1825 had alot of reading but it's definitely my favourite course.
Best prof I've had at York!! Super caring!! If you can try and get him as your TA. Recommends 5+ hours reading a week but its more like 7+. If you even do 75% of the readings you are guaranteed an A. Take every test seriously, you don't wanna reach thee end with 1 bad mark and regrets.
I was definitely disappointed with this class. Based on the course description it sounded like something I would be very interested in but the class was incredibly dry. Supposed to be 6 hours of readings each week but its definitely more than that. Not sure if I just got a bad TA but the tutorials were super confusing and the he was very unclear.
Great prof that wants to see you succeed. The course definitely does require a lot of time for the readings which are helpful for weekly study questions. His tests revolve around his lectures so If you attend them and take notes you will be well on your way. Overall great prof, but get ready to read!
great speaker lots of reading one test every month
This course is jam packed with ideas. It has clear policies, the website is easy to navigate, the prof answers emails very quickly and is always available outside class the audio recordings of the lectures are well done.
Neil is the best Professor I have had at York University. He really does a great job explaining material and really does care about all students. This one person who tried to blacklist his profile below is wrong. Show up to class take notes and you will do well.
Neil Braganza is a passionate professor with the eagerness to help every student. I just competed my undergrad in History this Year and this was by far one of my mom enjoyable courses I have taken. Like any other class, you show up, participate And do the work you will do great !
A very good Professor, please take the class.
Neil Braganza is an excellent professor ! Every student has the opportunity to do well if you put in the appropriate effort. His lectures are filled with interesting knowledge and he delivers that content with passion. He is very clear and outgoing. I took this course in the summer and I was actually looking forward to the lectures.
Wonderful professor, you will love him
I recommend he is a great person. Keep up the great work Neil!
Seems passionate, but does expect far too much from students. The class requires that you read 150-200 pages of reading each week and papers are due every week before lecture and there is no explanation for the VERY difficult readings before handing in papers. INTENSE COURSE WITH STRICT DEADLINES! Does not accept most late work and big late penalty
I enjoyed this class a lot, the teacher and I had various debates on topics, and this course opened my mind to new ideas. A great experience, and I that I would definitely do again.
Awesome Professor!! Kept the class engaged with exciting lecture. Material was really easy to understand. Decent amount of test but they were not hard at all. As long as you went to lecture you had nothing to worry about. Definitely would recommend this prof and this class
I enjoyed this class immensly. It's obvious that Prof. Braganza cares about the material and his students. Participation in tutorials and building personal understanding is what makes this class really pop. I would take this class again in a heartbeat and wish I had had Prod . Braganza for more classes during my University career.
The lecture and the discussion are very boring and lots of homework. He is a tough grader. I really suggest people think carefully before take his class.
Not a suitable course for first years, second years, or even third years. Far too many readings per week, VERY difficult readings at that, too many unnecessarily long assignments, too many books to purchase, and Neil hasn't been understanding or lenient with students even during a global pandemic. No clear guidelines for essays as well.
Neil is a great person, my handwriting is bad so instead of getting a 0 he allowed me to go to his office and read my paper to him while he was watching. Then, he assigned me a grade. He really, truly, cares, we need more people like him at York University.
Neil helps anyone who asks, you will learn a lot. Unfortunately, a single relentless hater posts negative comments over and over, even after they get taken down. Look before July 2020, and you will see a consistent record of positive comments by a variety of different voices going back to 2005.
Professor Braganza is a very tough marker. If you do not include every single detail in your answers, you will not get a perfect mark. Long readings every week and over 1000 words of writing every week. YOU CANNOT MISS A LECTURE! Everything, every single detail from the lecture will be on the tests. But his lectures are fun, the course is just HARD
A really nice and caring Professor. Neil is a really caring guy who cares for his students. You must take his class.
Neil is one of the most caring profs I have ever had. Since the course was online, Neil was open to holding Zoom office hours basically anytime to review essays and course content. The syllabus changed to 4 essays, 6 reading assignments, and weekly forum posts. Take detailed notes during the lecture recordings, and you will do well on the essay.
I took this course during the 18/19 year. He's great lecturer who clearly cares about what he teaches. It was the course that I hated. The readings were long with outdated and obscure language coupled with 10 reading assignments that were really time consuming considering that this was the least important course on my schedule at the time.
Dr. Braganza is a very fair, passionate professor. Though, do not take the online version of this course if you hate writing countless essays that count for your whole grade. The lectures are 1-2 hour voice recordings, no visuals or video. The 6 books we have to read have difficult language to understand, and the essay questions are brutal.
A class act Professor and must take for your GENED courses. I would take another class if I can.
Good prof that forces you to critically think but lots of difficult lengthy reading, heavy workload, and a hard marker. Wouldnt recommend taking in your 1st year or 2nd year, its more suitable as a 3rd or 4th year course. Definitely not a bird course. Lectures are also only audios which can get... boring
If you're a student with a heavy course load looking for a bird course, this is definitely not one of them. you are required to do reading summaries, forum posts weekly, and 3 major papers with readings of 20 pages minimum. however, he does try his best to provide as much info as possible about assignments & essays and has interesting topics.
Dr. Braganza is really nice but expects way too much from students, is a really tough marker, assigns too much work as there are weekly forum posts and reading summaries to do. Also, the essays are brutal and he marks them too hard. This course is way too difficult for 1st yr students. Even being in 3rd yr, I find it extremely challenging!
This was my absolute favourite class. It developed my knowledge of history, appreciation of law as well as improved my worldview and philosophy. I thoroughly enjoyed the readings, the tutorials and the lectures! Professor Braganza is organized to a fault - a really admirable trait. Definitely take this class if you have the opportunity! :)
Braganza is such a sweetheart and is so passionate about the material which makes the very *boring* material somewhat bearable. However, the course load aint it and some of the readings are extremely outdated and irrelevant. But he's so nice :')
Neil is one of my favorite professors. He is caring understanding and his lectures are very interesting to attend. There is also for reading (9 credit ) but if you're on top of it, it's easy. He really is passionate and it shows. Definitely take a class with him
Neil is great, very accommodating and his lectures are clear and make the difficult readings easy (or easier) to understand. The class however is very difficult, far from a bird course so you really need to understand the material to write the long long papers required for the course, which there are a lot of.
Professor Braganza is one of the best professors that I've had at York! His lectures explain everything really well and the tutorials are super interesting. Such a sweetheart! He walks you through the readings and gives lots of hints about what is important. Would take again
Niel is a good person, but not a very good teacher to have. The readings are very old/difficult and he does not make any effort to make them any clearer. In fact, he always makes sure to use confusing and vague language just so he does not "give answers away". BEWARNED, do not take this course unless you plan on suffering for the duration of it!
Neil is a very nice and cares deeply about his students. However, he expects you to think for yourself and will push you to improve your critical thinking skills. As a result, he is tougher than most professors, so if you are looking for an easy A his course isn't for you. Otherwise his course is very interesting, especially if you like philosophy.
Neil is a awesome professor! He is always willing to meet with you to help you with the assignments. His lectures cover the readings in detail so you know what the important parts are. I enjoyed the course. I would take it again.
Neil is an amazing person and is extremely flexible of his students circumstances. however he is an extremely tough grader and the content of this class can be overwhelming especially in first yeah. would recommend taking a different class for a 9 credit humanities
was a tough first year course with the level of analysis required for the test and reading responses but overall very insightful professor with a passion for what he is teaching
Neil is one of the worst professors I've had. He's unprofessional, rude, and won't answer questions during lectures. Often unprepared, he forgets his notes and goes off-topic. He forces participation in tutorials and gets upset if we don't comply. His lack of encouragement and patience is frustrating.
Neil presented the syllabus, lectures, & assignments in the simplest forms possible. You need to read & do your part. He attentively listens to everyone's viewpoint; genuinely motivates students to think; and he brings the lecture alive. He connects and communicates actively with everyone. I would attend this course again. Awesome scholar & person.
Neil is an amazing professor, his insight into novels and lectures are great and the feedback he gives on his assignments is also much appreciated. At first I did not excel in this course but after meeting with him and going through where to improve I learned how to improve my rewriting; as well as get a better grade. Neil is a wonderful professor!
Neil is a great professor and amazing TA. I found this course to be very interesting and the way he taught it was really easy to stay involved. He gives great feedback as well. At first I was not doing as well as I wanted to but after meeting with him a few times I improved my grade by applying his feedback and learned how to write better.
Neil provides leniency in his marking criteria, is open to discussing and altering test grades, and utilizes a holistic approach in determining final grades by accounting for participation and assignment grades. Attending tutorials is particularly useful in ensuring a good grade, alongside staying on top of readings! I highly enjoyed his class!
To be fair I wasn't that into the class to begin with. I took it because I thought it would be interesting as I enjoy the topics of law and morality, but the course was pretty boring. I didn't enjoy any of the books he chose for us to read, especially when we were reading plays. It was just very demanding for a first year class.
extremely passionate about the course which honestly really keeps you engaged. I really liked Neil he picked out very interesting books and plays to read. His tests were long and course material needed to be well understood to take them. Just make sure you're caught up and understand the readings and you should do great!
He often comes across as rude, making it difficult to feel comfortable or supported. Many of my classmates and I felt uncomfortable and even attacked in his class, which hindered engagement and a positive learning experience.
I liked Neil! He is laid back and jokes around but the course gets deep and he is very passionate about it. Lectures and tutorials are a must. Good course!
He's kind, authentic, and approachable. Keep up with readings, and you'll do well. He's lenient, and it shows in his syllabus. Tip: buy physical copies or print the books. Annotating and noting key quotes helps for tests which are based on readings. Buy books early at YorkU's bookstore; they run out fast. Recommend both the professor and course!

Such a great prof. He was always so enthusiastic to be in class and was very excited to teach which was engaging even if the lectures were at 8am. Graded based off knowledge of plays and books which are very much required. Don't take if you don't like reading literature. Tests are long, but as a someone who enjoys reading, this class was great.
not good.. the ta was even worse
Terrible professor AND teaching assistant. The most challenging and difficult class, what he expected was almost impossible. I did poorly on my first couple of tests, barley passing, i meet with him several times to try to improve and got awful feedback, my tests came back the same even tho I improved. He is a terrible marker and extremely unfair.
