little to no homework, little to much reading
All he does is complain about Santa Barbara non-stop and how SBCC doesn't pay him enough. Too much reading too for the course that's not really pertinent to Soc. Unorganized, incompetant and just concerned about finishing his doctorate. Talks too fast and his voice is very annoying for 1.5 hours...
Neil seems like a bitter guy, but it's kind of funny if you just take it with a grain of salt. I didn't have the book for this class or ever study. I just paid attention in class, his tests were based off mostly what he says/writes down. If you don't normally struggle in school, this class is EZ!
neil's a good guy who cares more for the content of what you turn in than strict deadlines. it's true, his classes are cake as long as you listen in class and follow his study guides
Great teacher. I enjoyed his class, and thought I got alot out of it. Work is easy, but interesting if you like Soc. Hes very flexible of deadlines which helps with the quality.

Dryden is awesome. He talks TO YOU and not AT YOU. The course material is simple so if you come to class and take notes you will absolutely get an 'A.' Anyone who cannot get a decent grade in his class is incompetent.
God Bless You , Enjoy SB it is a wonderful place to live. "if you judge people you have no time to love them" :)

one word: FABULOUSNESS!!
Neil is the poo! Quirky and funny personality, totally engages students by including them in class discussions, instead of just lecturing. Would def recommend
I love Neil! He is funny, cute, and makes sociology very accessible. His lectures are engaging and he likes to discuss things with the students...lots of relevant pop culture references. This is my favorite class this semester, I learned a lot in a fun and painless way.
As long as you study, you'll do fine....Neil is a nice, funny, and low-key guy. He does a great job of relating lectures to everyday life.
Why is Neil the best pro ever? Probably because he is our age, and is a student himself at UCSB. So cool, makes class easy by being laid back and understanding. Def take his classes easiest out of all the Soc teachers!
THIS GUY IS TOTALLY COOL. VERY NICE AND EASY TO WORK WITH.. HE'S JUST A NICE MAN AND YOU LEARN A LOT. HIS LECTURES ARE INFORMATIVE AND HIS TESTS ARE EASY. IF YOU READ THROUGH THINGS - GO TO CLASS - PARTICIPATE AND YOU'LL GET AN A... NO BRAINER! HE'S YOUNG, ENTERTAINING, AND VERY PLEASANT AND DON'T CALL HIM DR. DRYDEN. CALL HIM NEIL !!!!
Neil is way chill and his class kicks major ass so you should definitly sign up for it!!
So chill, smart, and helpful.Relaxed environment while still providing the info you need. Highly dependent on Dr. Pepper.
great teacher. highly recommend. he's so nice and if you talk to him he works with you and getting an A is easy to do.. and you actually learn things. this is the way all classes should be... and he's hot!
Fun, engaging, & entertaining. Especially talented at making the material relevant.
This class was very fun and very interesting. He teaches one chapter every night class and tests are very easy. He will review EVERYTHING on the test before you take it so studying is not needed. (sorry Neil) Don't even take notes. Just sit bad and listen. Don't bring an apple, bring a can of Dr. Pepper.
i was apprehensive about taking a class from a professor that is reletively new at teaching; but actually neil is very intelligent, entertaining and sensetive to people's different fealings a perspectives about things. i would definetaly take him again.
TAKE HIS CLASS
I could not speak of this class more highly. Coolest guy in the entire world. Reminds me of Conan O'Brian, but BETTER. Constantly drinks Dr. Pepper, but you get over that pretty quickly. Really listen in when he talks to himself-it's hilarious. From Kentucky, funny as hell, and really cute! And you'll actually learn something!!
So far my favorite professor. I learned so much and the tests are easy. I actually enjoyed going to class and listening to Neil lecture. He is quite a character and an experience worth having. This is what all college classes should be like!
Ask him to bring his harmonica to class and play it!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I went on rate my prof and everyone loved neil so of course i decided to take it. Unfortunatly, neil saw the comments on here from his previous students saying that the tests were soo easy, so he made his tests harder for his spring '08 students (including me)It was impossible to pass a test and the class avg was a D. BORINGG
doesn't help if you read every chapter assigned for the test, the questions will probably be on something else, he went on this site and saw the comments and made the tests soo much harder! first test i got and A, for the rest I got D's and C's,study guides don't help you at all, if you wanna pass know EVERYTHING written in the book, that MIGHT hel
Neil's class wasn't easy, but definitely not hard. The students below are clearly slackers because if you bothered to attend class and spent a modi****of effort on the study guide you'd at least scrape a B. Neil is funny, but he needs to ask more focused questions in class. Oh, and he forget to send the study guide unless you harass him non stop
went to every class, studied for every test knew everything on the study guide. didn't help i'm sorry i don't think he's a very good teacher, and tests are waaay to hard. cool guy though
Hmm, I'm not sure what the crybabies below are whining about. i realize SBCC isn't quite the ivy leauge, but really, do the reading, you'll be fine.
Quizzes on assigned readings. Exams based on study guide (bug him to send em out earlier). Define terms on study guide by using the textbook glossary. Short answer questions on exam is lecture based. Attendance is key to a good grade. Helpful if you e-mail him w/questions. Allows you to make up work if you ask. Take Dryden, he's super chill!
This class was definitely not that hard and nor were the tests. I hardly read the book, just showed up for lectures and did the study guides and I got an A. Also, hes not as bad as some people on here say he is.The class wasnt as enlightening as I had expected from these comments, but I didnt look at the clock too much and it was definitely amusing
Neil is the man! He is the coolest guy ever! Furthermore, he is astute and brilliant. He really understands a lot for his age. In terms of his class, it can be disorganized at times, but for the most part, it is fun, engaging and laid back. He is NOT anal about anything. This is how all college classes should be! Take this guy. Don't be foolish.
Awesome! Do the reading and you'll be fine. Very funny and keeps your attention. Really enjoyed the class. Take him!!!
Made the three hour long class interesting. Hilarious teacher, mumbles a lot but I found it humorous. He is young, yet knows what he's talking about. The tests are very doable if you review beforehand. Do the readings! A lot of the questions are from them. Take this class!
Great teacher. If you're looking to complete the IGETC worksheet, and are missing a class in the AREA 4, take a Sociology class with Neil. Which ever it is, I guarantee you'll go to class and enjoy it. If you don't, you're an idiot and you should not look up professors on this website.
Neil is great. BUT DO THE READINGS! He doesnt have a 5 page syllabus for nothing. He will go over every quiz and test before you take them (he wants you to pass). His lectures (even though sometimes out there) are very important and ALWAYS end up on the test, so show up to class. He will make you work for you 'A' but he will help you.
If you want to actually enjoy a class take him. He is funny and makes theories come to life. If you go to class, participate and follow the readings you will do amazing things in his class. Every class was enjoyable
Tell him to bring his accordion to class and play! Amazing and so funny. He'll deny it but keep at it, it's WORTH IT!
Neil is an extremely fun teacher and class with him is awesome. It is also very interesting and helpful and I learned so much from this class. No homework. Just mid-terms and a paper.
super easy class, listen to the lectures. no deadlines, neil is really chill. he is funny and you often find yourself wondering what he is talking about. do the readings to pass the tests. tests are multiple choice with a few short answeres
Great class. Read the text prior to attending each class and you will do very well. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
Neil is the best!!! His class is really interesting. Even though he pretends there are there aren't really any deadlines. He is funny and just a chill dude. There are 5 projects and you must do 4 they are all hands on and pretty easy to get through. Most of his test are easy too and you can normally convince him to let you do it as a class.
Love this guy! Spend one semester with him and you will take something unique away with you...also not forgetting his quirkiness, his real-ness, his humane-ness along with his humor. You may find yourself floating within Neil's world, however toward the end an "aha" moment shall resonate. It will become crystal clear. A superb teacher.
pretty pessimistic. reveals a part of society I wish I wasn't made aware of. "How we spend our whole lives under florescent lights and rarely embrace camping, beach, etc." Complains about being in Santa Barbara and not having enough money when he spends it irresponsibly on clothes, eating out etc. Kept my interest though. test were written vaguely
Great teacher! His lectures are extremely interesting, and he is very knowledgeable about sociology and is overall a highly intelligent being. I gained/learned a lot from taking this class. Take good notes, and study for tests and you'll do fine.
This class was interesting, but disorganized. Be prepared to get off track from the syllabus. Neil is funny and his passion for his subject matter shines through. His lectures are interesting and worth attending, esp. since he takes attendance quizzes. Tests & quizzes are surprisingly difficult and do require that you read. Overall a good class.
he is the hardest teacher to pay attention to.. he doesnt relate homework with tests and doesnt give you direction for what the test will be like. i would never take this class again. tests are extremely hard and gives a bunch of reading without any direction of what will be important to know for exams. disorganized as well.
Niel is a hot. I was really into his class too. Hes a really funny guy and there aren't many surprises on the tests just do the reading and participate in the discussions and your for sure do well in the class.
This guy is one of the most charismatic, up beat and all around fun professors i have ever had. His passion for his work is inspiring, but like any other teacher he does possess some downfalls. He is very disorganized in running the class, we were always a few chaps behind in reading. Lectures are messy and vague. Just do the reading!
Hes funny and relates the material to our generation so its understandable. Not very organized but if you take notes in class and read the chapters and such you will be fine, make sure you study cause the tests are pretty hard. I thought he was a good teacher and got me interested in sociology. only 1 paper and a few tests and quizzes. good class!
Neil is a great teacher, intelligent, entertaining, engaging and clearly loves his subject matter. Really helpful, approachable and super funny. Tests and quizzes are quite hard, but you should be okay if you do the reading. Wears cool shoes.
Neil is a great teacher, super engaging, entertaining and intelligent. Really approachable, helpful and very funny. Super interesting class. Surprisingly hard quizzes and tests - do the reading! Wears cool shoes. He's as badass as the Honey Badger.
Super chill
Neil Dryden is a great professor who cares about his students and what he is teaching- Definitely recommended!
such a cool guy. came to class wearing a hot pink t-shirt and with his pet rabbit. super approachable, lets you take the final early if you will miss it for whatever reason. just do the readings. he's really funny and his lectures are very interesting.
The best teacher I have had in a while. He has a way with words that makes you wanna listen. Take his class, you will be thankful you did. He is a funny dude.
Neil's one of the coolest teachers at city college. Super nice and very approachable. Expect a fair share of reading, but class is fun and interesting. Good times. Take him!
Amaaaaazing lecturer, hypnotyzing almost. Weird timber or voice but really really funny and enthusiastic. Loved him! Lots of reading.... I was a bio major but still was interested in the subject because of him.
Super cool guy very eas approachable and easy to talk with. Not super orginized but if you do the work and extra credit your fine. He gives very good and interesting lectures and you want to go to class. Defiantly take him over another professor he really grows on you. He a good guy and a great teacher.
This class was AMAZING! Neil is so nice and adorable! Lots of reading but if you go to class it will help a lot. He likes specifics on his tests and they are very wordy but the class makes up for it. He keeps you engaged the whole time. Not to mention he drinks Dr. Pepper non stop, sits on the back rest of chairs, and has awesome anecdotes. TAKE IT
Such a funny guy! First few weeks was really hard and didn't really get him, but class gets easier and funnier, and if you really try to get to know him you'll find out he's such a smart and nice guy! Lots of readings and tests are pretty hard, but he's really helpfull. Taking him again next semester!!
Neil is a laid back professor which is how they should be, however his tests and homework were extremely hard. I had no idea where he was going with anything and half the time I had no idea what was going on in the class and I did the reading. It sucks because he is extremely intelligent and a really awesome guy, but the class was not wort it.
Neil thoroughly covers all the required material during his lectures. He gives 4 non-comprehensive quizzes and tests. He also provides extra credit questions on each test. He also gives two papers one is for extra credit. If you can get past his crazy syllabus, there is no reason not to get an A. I highly recommend him. He is an Awesome teacher.
What can I say, except that I adore this man! This class was nuts... you will see what I mean.
Honestly one of the best professors here. He is incredibly knowledgable and even though, yes, he is disorganized and always behind, this class is super interesting. I've learnt a lot. Going to class is mandatory. 3 test, 1 final, 1 paper. His tests are extremely challenging, however, he offers an insane amount of extra cred on each test. MUST TAKE!
He is a horrible teacher. I had no idea what was going on in the class ever. All he did talk really fast all period about nothing. He has no class structure whatsoever and doesn't help his students. DON'T take this class!
Neil is an interesting character. Yes, he's disorganized but he definitely knows what his stuff. Very interesting material and class is always fun. Tests can be tricky, but he offers so much extra cred on each test that it's almost impossible to do poorly. Highly recommend this class, loved it!
Great teacher! I took him for 113 sex and gender class and then took 101 this past summer. Over all, he's hilarious and is one of the best teachers I've had. But,be weary, he is unorganized and some lectures are scatterd but, ask him questions and he always clarifies if you feel confused on certain topics.
A professor that knows his stuff really well. He will go into depth about the topics covered and answer questions thoroughly. He's pretty laid back and puts humor into his lectures. Definitely recommend taking any of his classes.
He is really funny. He makes study guides as long as you remind him. I only went to class because he is adorable. Maybe it's his socks...
He's easily one of the best teachers I've ever had. Excellent attitude and teaching style, if scattered. He's aware of it though and will clarify anything you ask him to (even right before the test), so if you fail, it's pretty much your fault. Really, genuinely, interested in the subject matter of his classes and it shows. Had him for 101, too.
Honestly one of the best teachers at SBCC. Engaging, relevant, clearly very intelligent, and he's such a cutie. He's not the easiest teacher around, but worth it. Take him!
Fun prof, decent bro, he includes me in his lectures too often.
He's a cool guy but his lectures are super confusing and I never understood what was going on in his class, not engaging at all because he is too scattered and talks too fast.Goes on too many tangents and the tests are extremely hard and worded so weirdly. I did read the assigned readings but still feel lost. I don't recommend this class at all.
Neil is such a great guy! his class is very interesting if you into sociology, he is very passionate about the subject so prepare for long class discussions. He tends to go off and talk a lot.. only had to write 1 paper in the class. He is very nice and laid back! TAKE HIM
He is a really up beat guy with a nice sense of humor; but he is too unorganized and very off topic during lectures. He is very hard to pay attention to.I wouldn't recommend his class
very nice guy, understanding.. a bit all over the place but as long as u read the assigned reading you'll be fine. I attended almost every class but feel I could've been fine without but then again you never know.. especially when he starts to compare steak and gummy worms
Fav professor at SBCC. Intellectually stimulating and makes going to class worthwhile. You'll learn a thing or two. Def recommend.
Easily the most interesting and engaging class at SBCC. Going to class is mandatory but you won't want to be skipping class anyway -- you'll actually enjoy it. Quizzes, Paper, and Tests are very fair, and if you pay attention in class + do the readings, there's no reason you won't do well. He cares about Sociology and his students and it shows.
Great class, the best part is so many things I learned in here have been helpful in my upper division sociology classes at UCLA. Only class this has prepared me for the UC system. Thanks Mr. Dryden!
Loved this class with Prof Dryden. His readings are challenging but interesting and I came out of his course with a broader understanding of gender politics. Don't skip class -- it's interesting and worth it, and you need to be there for all the lectures, but definitely take him!
Definitely take this class!!! Your last chance is this summer, he is leaving SBCC. Boost your GPA, easy semester class, I bet even easier summer class. Opens your minds, lectures are chill, great perspectives gained. You are dumb if you do not take this class. Best class at SBCC
This amazing teacher is a great example to the younger generations and HIS peers. Any school he teaches at is lucky.
Neil is an inspirational teacher with amazing lectures! It's very clear he deeply understands the subject he is teaching and is passionate about it. Great slides, media presentations, and well-thought out lessons.
Great teacher! I highly recommend you take him, plus hes hilarious.
TBH he may be my favorite professor of all time.
