Awesome teacher! Much better than the one from the previous year. He posts his slides online, the information is clear and he's helpful. Make sure to attend class because the slides are only half complete. It's sad that he's gone. Why doesn't the U hire good professors? >< Good luck in the Maritimes!
Excellent prof. Midterms are a little challenging. Very helpful.
One of those "nice guy" profs. He'll give a ton of leeway and seems to appreciate students. Mid-terms are tough, though. Study what he tells you and you should be just fine.
I thought the midterms were extremely easy. All you do is go to class and fill in the blanks that he doesn't put into the power point. So you just need to memorize the power points her posts + the stuff you write. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK. The only slightly tough section on the exam is the diagram section. The pics in the power pts are important.
Great guy, class is short and you should go, his explanations and slides are pretty much all you need. Textbook not required, but if you do purchase it and come to class, you're looking in the upper grade ranges.
I found Neil Porter to be a very supportive and approachable guy. If you ever had any questions he would help you right away. Go to class and make sure you write down the blanks from the slides and you'll be golden!
He's a nice prof... knows what he's talking about.. but unhelpful if you miss a class. I don't like that the slides are half filled in, because if you miss a class, he will NOT help you out. Also, I thought this class was going to be pretty interesting, turns out.. it's not very interesting at all...
Dr. Porter was a great prof, don't miss a class though or he won't give you the slide show notes because they're half filled in. He was pretty easy to follow in lectures and very interested in the subject! I would take another class with him for sure!
Overall he was one of my better prof I had this semester. He seemed to be really passionate about the things he was talking about which made it more interesting for me. Even though the content is pretty basic, I still found the midterms/final to be pretty difficult.
The class itself is fairly easy; show up to his 50 minute lecture & fill in the blanks on his slides. Although the content seemed to be easy, I found his midterms to be extremely challenging. His lectures became very dry over time as he repeats himself multiple times. He has good intentions, but I wouldn't recommend when it comes to teaching.
Neil is a good guy. He gives you all of the notes which is nice but he doesn't include everything which sucks. Easy elective to take. (banks help a lot). All in all good guy. Decent Prof. Class is the most boring ever though.. hard to study for.
Neil is a good respected prof, he is pretty funny guy. Just come to class and fill in the blanks on the notes, Do it cause he wont give them to you. One thing i don't like is his mandatory group work (posters and group presentation) annoying high school stuff and his exams can get difficult (no simple multiple choice).
An excellent professor who knows his stuff inside and out. Regardless of the topic, he makes the class as interesting and relatable as possible. The exams are designed to give you every opportunity to succeed since the marks come from such a wide range of question types. If you thoroughly review his lectures, you will do well.
Cool professor who tries to make the material interesting! However, his tests are hard.
Porter will frequently say "if you have my notes, you have all the info needed to pass", which I personally didn't find true either of the two times I had him as a prof. Otherwise, however, he's a very nice guy who couldn't possibly know or care for his curriculum more. Funny, fair grader and there for help, but NEVER touched the $230 textbook.
Funniest prof I've ever had!! Don't take pictures during his lectures. Go to class and study his slides and you'll do well
GO TO CLASS OR YOU WILL NOT PASS, HE DOES NOT FILL IN HIS LECTURES EVEN THOUGH HE POSTS THEM. He is a wonderful prof, very funny and very knowledgeable, though if you do not go to class you are absolutely guaranteed to fail.
Dr. Porter is a wonderful professor. His humour makes class very entertaining and interesting. He is very considerate and tries to make sure that students are given as many opportunities as possible to do their best. He does tend to go fairly quickly through the material but his slides are easy to follow.
Really great prof during lecture and during office hours. Very accommodating to students needs. Likes to go off on rants sometimes that are hilarious. Just show up and fill in the slides. Combination of MC T/F fill in the blanks, and short essay questions for midterm and final. Very straightforward.
His lectures are interesting and informative at the same time. Some really good examples and good jokes he shows us during his lectures at times. Although you need to take notes from the slides as the ones on PDF are missing parts. However, if you missed anything, you will be able to find the answer in the textbook he indicated on the syllabus.
Makes jokes, exams based on "fill in the blank" lecture notes.
Neil made coming to school worth it. He was always making jokes and took interest in student's lives. I loved being in his class I've had him 3 times now and hope I can have him a 4th! Best prof ever.
The funniest lecturer evereasy to follow. Be awaredhe doesn't like MC questions.
He's a fun and a funny professor to be around. His tests are hard but it makes students think more and study harder.
Took this class with an extension knowledge of environmental science and geomorphology and this guy expected way too much from us. Exams were formatted like I was in grade 7 with constant shorts answers and no multiple choice. He is a grown man who is angered by the previous rumours of this course being easy so he is making his job to make it bad
Very hard, would not recommend unless you like studying all the material in bulk, no such thing as a proper review in his class, make study notes after each unit to break up the amount of studying that has to be done for each midterm and the final.
Honestly, if you attend the lectures and pay attention to power points, all exams are pretty straight forward. Mr. Porter is an excellent prof and will definitely help you if you reach out to him if you feel you are struggling. He's easy to talk to and make lectures pretty funny with his jokes.
If you attend lectures and go to class you'll be fine ! Always makes lectures enjoyable and easily my favourite classes were the ones he taught. He's very fair and tries to help you improve your grade if you need it by giving options.
Go to class. Pay attention to his lectures and fill in the slides as you go. No textbook required. Fairly easy course.
Honestly hands down the best prof at U of Windsor. I have had him for two courses and enjoy his classes a lot! You will not be disappointed!
I absolutely LOVE this professor and his lectures. My love for the material aside, he is hilarious and knows how to keep a class engaged. He clearly has a passion for what he teaches, which inspires me even more. His midterms are more than fair, as the answers come right off of the slides. If you come to class and get the blanks, you'll do great!
Dr. Porter is a great prof! His lectures are interesting and entertaining, his midterms and final are very fair and he gives hints on what material you should focus on. He also gives students the option to write a paper if they're not happy with a midterm grade. Be sure to attend class as some slides have information missing that you'll need!
He gives skeleton slides, so you have to go to class to fill in the blanks, but you can easily get it form the textbook (not mandatory- don't even bother getting it), or another student. Easy and interesting classes, makes jokes which is nice.
If you're planning on taking the Natural Hazards and Disasters course with him, DO IT! He is the sweetest, most caring, funniest and passionate prof! He's such a charm, reminds me so much of Ryan Reynolds lol! During COVID, we were marked with 4 tests worth 25%. Straightforward and no surprises, he tells what exactly what to expect.
Very long midterm and exam, also the questions were kind of hard to answer properly. Doing class online, when he uploads lectures, you have to pay attention to what he says because all the important information is said and theres very little written on the slides, also the textbook wasn't the easiest to understand.
He made the transition to online school very smooth by involving his students in class delivery method, and changed what was not working. Class was live lectures, but were recorded. The class consisted of four tests only, they were very fair and we were given a lot of time to prepare. Questions were directly related to live lectures! Amazing prof!
Is good at explaining concepts and makes material interesting. No surprises on the exam, just concepts directly from lecture. 10/10 recommend.
Neil was one of the best profs I have had. He has blanks on his lectures so you have to go to class and fill in the blanks on his slides as he talks but his exams are word for word the blanks. So if you study you will be fine but it is very factual and easy.
He's super funny and makes watching his lectures not a total bore. Some professors have a very monotone ,bored voice, but not him. No homework. Just 4 tests that are really straight forward, with max ten questions (all short answer). If you need to bump up your GPA go with him.
Terrible, terrible, terrible. Dr Porter lectures are literally just him reading the slides, which makes it difficult to pay attention. The quizzes are short answer but open book with online format and you have to get extremely specific to get the marks. Not an easy credit.
Quality prof with a lot of personal stories. His tests are based entirely on the lectures so you can avoid the textbook. It must also be noted that he does not promote trespassing in order to collect rocks.
Best prof ever! Ive taken a few of his classes and hes amazing! Funny, easy tests (as long as you show up to class) and is very knowledgeable in what he teaches. You can tell he loves to teach what he does and makes you interested in course. Im a psych major but loved his classes!
Hes really easy if you pay attention. Hes a fun guy which makes class more interesting, Ive actually taken his class again because I loved the first one so much.
so much material to learn and only 4 tests worth 25%. the tests are super hard even if you show up to every class
I love this prof. So passionate about his lectures and cares about what he teaches all while making it interesting to listen to. Any class Neil Porter teaches I'm taking in the future. His midterm was exactly as he said it would be, straight forward, and just know the blanks in his powerpoint slides. :) !!!!!!!
Kind and organized prof with clear and fair outlines for the 4 (25%) tests. Use the lecture PowerPoints (you MUST be there to fill in the blanks) heavily when you study. Go to class even if you are drunk so you get them!! You will definitely need to study, but a high grade is very achievable (and I have ADHD) and the prof tells you how to do so:)
he claims assignments are "grade boosters" but docs you around 10% if you talk a minute less than he expects. even if the work is great. apparently timing is more important than information. he also brags about how easy the course is, then the exam average is in the low 60s. he is a hard marker and will take marks off for almost anything.
I find Prof Porter to be a great professor! All you have to do is go to class and take notes. I found his midterm to be very fair, although there was one tricky question. He's an interesting and funny guy. His lectures are very clear. I didn't like his group project. Although I got an A, it's hard to excel if you don't know your partner.
I do NOT recommend this professor to anyone. Mid terms are very difficult and it has a lot of questions which is mostly you writing the answer, whether fill in the blanks or short answers. Class average is always in the 60s and he brags about it as if it's a good thing. I could not continue the course because of how difficult it is.
If you go to each lecture and take notes it is impossible to fail. He is very upfront with his expectations and the midterms are almost too easy. He is also compassionate with a good sense of humour; he knows you are in four other classes and thus attempts to make his class easier. If you read a review of someone who failed, that's on them.
Dr. Porter clearly and effectively explains every detail of his lecture slides. He presents the facts that are hardest to understand in a way that amuses and appeals to everyone in the lecture hall, whether they be good at science or not. He offered open communication with students and made attending lectures mandatory, beneficial, and fun.
Make sure to go to classes or have a friend that can give you notes because part of the lectures is only told during classes. There are four tests total (each worth 25%), which are easy if you study. Tests are super fair (exactly from notes, no tricking). An amazing professor, you can tell how passionate he is about his work
Dr. Porter is a very entertaining and funny prof. He is very passionate about what he teaches too. Make sure you attend the lectures because he tests you on the fill-in-the-blanks on his slides. Just look over the notes he gives you in class and you'll do good on the midterms. Would definitely take him again!
Good professor who tries to get a laugh out of the class. Exams are a little difficult and may seem unfair as they are poorly worded compared to the slides you would study from.
his lectures are entertaining and you kind of have to go to them because there's 4 tests worth 25% each which are based entirely on blanks you fill in by going to the lectures. the tests aren't easy but they're not hard either you do have to study everything but mainly focus on the blanks you fill in
Dr. Porter is, without question the best professor I have ever had at UoW. I loved him so much that I decided to take on a minor in environmental science because of how amazing he was. His lectures are fun to attend, his marking is clear and straightforward, and he doesn't try to trick you or throw curveballs. 10/10 would recommend him every time.
I really enjoyed this class and this professor, would take again. His lectures were entertaining, and the topics were fairly easy to understand. He leaves lecture slides blank with information you'll learn during class so make sure to show up, but aside from that you're clearly given topics of what to study for tests.
Prof Porter is funny, nice, and reasonable. He lectures using skeleton slides (make sure you go to class in order to fill in the blanks). If you study the info on the slides and take his hints you will pass easily (I have ADHD). The tests were very fair, and exactly as outlined (you might be asked to draw diagrams though so pay attention to them).
neil porter is such a personable teacher and very funny in class. attendance is mandatory because you have to get the blanks from his slides, but as long as you go to class the exams are fairly straightforward, also the final exam last semester was really hard.
I dislike him because his lecture notes used basic terminology then on the midterms, he would use more sophisticated terms and re-word everything in a confusing manner. Also, he directed us the wrong way in regards to what diagrams to pay attention to. Told us to not pay attention to certain diagrams, yet still continued to put it on the midterm...
Easily one of the top profs at u windsor
This professor is very good, he is very passionate in his lectures and the tests very easy to do well in so long as you attend his lectures. He doesn't post class information of his lectures afterwards, so attendance is mandatory if you want to do well. I recommend him. However, he makes a lot of jokes in his class which are extremely unfunny/
Attendance is definitely mandatory. He is very passionate about what he teaches, and has lots of jokes to tell. He does not offer any form of extra credit. I found his midterms a little bit challenging, but his final exam was noticeably easier. His slideshows and lectures are very straightforward, but they are super long. Didn't require a textbook.
Professor Porter is by far the best professor at Uwindsor. You just have to show up:)
Generally easy class, attendance is mandatory but exams are easy and there isnt too much homework. Good teacher with good lectures, but terrible sense of humour (struggle to sit through his jokes sometimes)
Dr. Porter is funny, however many of his jokes rely on his love life for some reason. I found his class unforgiving. If you get a lower grade on an exam, there is no making it up. Fill-in-the-blank PowerPoints were rushed through; making it hard to complete notes. A good portion of test questions felt irrelevant, and too much information to study.
Dr. Porter's classes were entertaining and he tried to make the lessons fun with interesting anecdotes that help you remember topics. Attendance is mandatory as he posts the powerpoints online but will leave out the most important info which is more likely to be on exams.
This prof is so funny! He really loves what he is lecturing on and I would take all of his classes just to get to sit in his lectures again. 10/10 if you're torn, DO IT he's amazing.
Professor Porter is nice and funny, he makes the lectures interesting and easy to follow. He always does 4 non-cumulative tests worth 25% each so it's not too bad. Class is mandatory because he posts the slides but leaves out the most important parts. Have to study for tests, which normally involve diagrams and identifying features.
Very difficult class, only four tests each worth 25% with no assignments, the slides are simply put while the tests use very formal language, making it difficult to study and remember everything, you will have to draw out diagrams which is tough, others I knew found the class fine, so it could be suited better for different learners
Porter is a wonderful professor! I took one geography class and ended up completing a geography minor because of him. His grading is straightforward: four very fair tests at 25% each. Content is straightforward and always well explained! His sense of humor makes lectures amazing! Beyond academics, he genuinely cares about his students' success.
He was a good professor and a nice man, but I hate that all the tests are weighed so heavily, one bad mark, and its hard to recover. There are a lot of sildes, and its free for all, which means you have no clue what's going to be on the test, so you have to study everything. But overall, the class is pretty chill.
never taking his classes again. many of my friends dropped the class after the first test.
Love Dr. Porter! He is so passionate about what he teaches and has so much knowledge and experience to offer. He is nice, and funny, and makes the lectures interesting. His tests are non-cumulative, if you go to class you will be fine. Attendance is mandatory. I've taken 2 of his courses and I'm taking another next semester! Definitely recommend!
Dr. Porter's lectures involve reading off an average of 50 slides, and he does not provide blanks for slides under any circumstances, even if you miss class for valid reason. Tests are unstructured and difficult to prepare for, making it hard to succeed. His teaching style may not suit those who prefer clear guidance and accessible materials.
I really enjoyed Dr. Porter's class. He was very straightforward with his expectations from us and IF YOU GO TO CLASS, you will probably do well on his exams. There are 3 midterms and a final so it is very test heavy but he only uses about 2 topics per test so as long as you study it is fairly easy. He is also such a nice guy, very funny and nice.
Dr. Porter is by far my favourite professor ever. He is so kind, helpful and understanding. His lectures are clear and engaging. So long as you show up and pay attention you will do well in all of his courses. His exams are multiple choice, short & long answer, with some diagrams so no matter what your learning style is you should be good.
Funny guy and has a passion for this stuff, which helps. 1 Presentation and 3 exams. Exams were harder than they should've been. Takes a simple question and makes it harder than it should be by wording it differently than he taught it. Mandatory classes as slideshows are fill-in-the-blanks.
Every terrible quality a professor could have, this guy has. There are way better professors in the Environmental Studies department. Avoid him if you can. Go for Jamey Essex, or Ken Drouillard. Don't waste your time on this sessional instructor. He's sessional for a reason.
There are only 3 tests and one final. All are based on in-class lectures that you have to attend because he will have fill in the blanks. Way too much memorization and he complicates the tests compared to the lecture slides. His slides are also not very easy to understand. I took it as an elective but it brought my grade down, don't take it!!
Overall engaging lectures. I didn't feel bored during class, and Dr. Porter clearly has a lot of passion for the subject matter. I just can't get behind his fill-in-the-blank lecture slides and unnecessarily difficult tests. Studying feels unrewarding due to lack of clear direction. Didn't suit my learning style. Not taking Dr. Porter again.
Neil Porter is a great teacher. He explains concepts clearly and has fun doing so. There are only 3 opportunities for marks which are all tests. He uploads lectures but in a fill in the blanks format so attendance is mandatory. Don't underestimate the tests, he expects you to retain most of the information from the powerpoints. overall great prof
Love his sense of humor and he explained the concept in very fun and clear way, two exams and one presentation, his tests are very fair and he give you different types of questions (Matching, charts, fill in the blanks with words box), so if you don't get famillar with all MC test, his tests would make you feel better, overal nice and fair
I liked his lectures but he is unorganized and will blame you for his mistakes. If you have any issues with the paired presentation, good luck getting any support from him. His demeanor changed very quickly and made it extremely uncomfortable for his students to approach him.
Have taken Prof Porter 3 times- he is very test heavy but has recently started adding one optional assignment for a grade boost. If you go to lectures and really prioritize studying, you should be okay, but his heavy content and refusal to give slide decks out for any reason after a missed class makes it unforgiving at times. He's funny though.
If you are thinking about taking this class as an elective don't do it, it's not worth the headache.
Awesome prof. Super interesting guy who is very passionate and knowledgable about the material. Course design is a little bit unforgiving as mentioned here, so you generally want to stay on top of going to lectures and reviewing the material. He's also super jacked. Just bursting out of his shirts. Just in case that sways anyones decision.
I love this professor. His lectures are actually interesting and he is a really good guy. I loved his class and would take it again every year. His tests are easy as long as you study.
I think he is one of my favourite professors ever. Even though your grade is only based off of 2 midterms and a final he does give you the option to do a presentation so that you midterms are worth less. He also tells you everything that will be on the midterms "hints" if you show up to the classes. He is very funny and makes the classes enjoyable.
Genuinely such an amazing professor. I've had him for ESCI 1000, ESTU 1100, and ESTU 2100. His lecture style is so easy to digest, and he's super funny. However, if you miss a fill-in-the-blank section on a slide, you're cooked unless you know someone to fill you in on it. Overall, he's a great prof, and I highly recommend him!
Dr. Porter is a great professor. I am not a science person at all, though I was pleasantly surprised by how accommodating and accepting he can be. I really struggled with this class due to science not being my strong suit, but I still feel extremely grateful I had him as a professor.
Literally the best professor. He's such a king, get a crown on this man's head. Love this man. I actually loved going to school because of him.
I LOVED Dr. Porter, he is such a funny guy and super well liked. If you go to his classes an attend you will NOT need to purchase a textbook. I'm not a very science person but I found the stuff he taught really interesting. Overall I enjoyed this class but only for the teacher, this class brought my average down so be careful.
I was a skeptic but I loved this class! Dr. Porter genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Just come to lectures and you will know exactly how to study for tests. They were super simple and efficient. I'm not an environmental science major but this class was easy to understand with minimal background information. Take it!
Disregard every 5 star rating. Worst professor at this school. Puts blanks in the slides so you are forced to come to class and does not give any help if you have a legitimate reason for why you did not show up. Good luck on tests when he expects you to study every piece of information he has given to you and then changes the wording up on the test
Porter makes it very easy to succeed in class BUT you must show up to class. You also do not have to buy the textbook. There is no homework just reviewing the lecture after class. He truly wants you to do well and content is engaging.
