He looks and sounds like Norm Macdonald
Genuinely wants you to to good, keep up with text, lots of in class group work
treats u like a kindergarten kid. Name Cards on our desk?? Please buddy, we're 20 years old
A lot of reading, but the course is very easy. You only need to go to class to get participation marks, because you can learn everything on your own from the text. He's an okay guy.
A pretty good teacher. Although, he expects alot from the students. His tests are pretty hard. Must attend class and participate in discussions.
Great prof, cares about the class. Tries to make dull subject fun with games and activities.
Awesome prof, a little goofy and makes the course fun!
Hard marker when it comes to short answers! Overall the course is not difficult..but the classes are very very boring. I'm ready to fall over in my seat during the 3 hr blocks. Nice guy though.
very very boring class. very hard marker. not a suitable professor for this course. never ending classes. teach yourself and don't go to class
this prof is a jerk. wanted to pretend to want to give everyone an A but does not really intend to. He makes fav student judgements. He is unfair in marking, and initially will seem nice, but really he is very mean and unreasonable. avoid him. he is fake
Contrary to what my "brother" said. Neil is awesome... maybe I was one of his "favorites" but he made MHR was good because of him.
Neil...He looks like Egon Spengler from Ghostbusters.Really knows his stuff, but teaches above the level of the course. He tries to make it fun, but the material is a bit dry.If you get up to leave early, he will stare you down like you just shot his mom.
Great Prof! if you can get him...do it! Tries his best to make the class more interesting than it really is. He makes a 3 hour class go by really fast! Definitely try to get him as a prof
Class is VERY boring, but he tries. Do NOT leave during class, your marks may reflect on that....
Neil is a very dedicated instructor with a lot of experience in HR. He has high standards but he is also fair and helpful. He makes the learning fun AND relevant. If you work hard, participate and clarify with him regarding projects, you'll be fine.
Does a pretty good job of relating to the students. Most of the people posting bad comments probably would hate the class no matter who is teaching it.
Neil is a great prof. I recommend him. He does a great job making the content of the class more interesting; and with the class I took, thats sometimes hard to do.
He is a great prof and he will help in any way he can if you ask; very fair - don't try lying to him - donsn't work and once he loses your trust you will be on his bad side
Really good prof that tries really hard to get his points across. With even a bit of effort it is possible to ace this class
Needs to be more approachable
This ass is horrible. In the beginning of the course, he said he understands some ppl don't like to speak in class and he will treat them with respect. Things turn out to be that he only favor those who talk in class and he mocks ppl that don't. That's a nice way to keep your words eh! ****!
Assigning participation marks??? are u in elementary school?? This is university and u need to go get a PHD before you come back to teach. So what i don't come to classes, I still pass your exams. U need to realize sometimes it's not the students' fault not coming to class. It's ur stupidity.
Participation is worth 10% and he almost gives it away if you come to class/contribute, for all the people complaining about it they just got a bad marks, they did nothing! If you are afraid to speak in class grow up because it the real world you are going to have to communicate with people.Good Prof
He is a good prof, and is very passionate about the course. Neil makes the course very interesting. For the first time in university you will see a professor who is really there to teach his students. Excellent prof, take this course its alot of fun.
To MHR505 students, do not take this prof. He is overrated by most ppl here. Trust me, he may seem nice, but he kills u on test and exams. And he marks hard on reports. Class avg last term was a C- he said. That is horrible! I almost got got kicked out of my co-op because of my lowered GPA!
DON'T TAKE THIS MHR COURSE WITH HIM!! HORRIBLE PROF! Everyone got killed on the exam. He marks extremely hard. If you're just taking an HR minor like me, tak another MHR course w/o him...trust me...you'll thank me....worst prof in MHR...
don't know what pple are complaining about, GREAT PROF, if you study, do your work & don't think it as another HR "BS" course, you'll do well.very passionate, helpful, good examples & wants u to do well. he's NICE, don't be fooled--VERY FAIR in marking, just make sure u know what he's looking for
Good prof! Uses in class exercises and examples to make class more understandable. Fair marker on most part, not very clear though on requirements and expectations for assignments.
This was my favourite class of the semester. I love his lectures b/c he uses several methods of teaching the material and he's enthusiastic about what he teaches. Like others, I have seen flashes of a mean side of him (haha) but for the most part he's a nice guy. Highly recommended!
His teaching style is very interesting and he's a very understanding prof. He values students' input during class time. Very friendly too...will talk to u if he sees you on a street. Overall his classes are worth taking.
even though he though our section was like "bag of hammers" he is still interesting and interactive. fun and informative, over all a great prof. ryerson should have more profs like neil teaching.
Neil is FIRST-CLASS. He was both effective and fun in his lectures, and was always there to help or hear out students. Don't put too much weight on his haters' ratings. Those idiots deserved what they got, I'm sure. They probably would've done WORSE in another prof's class!
Neil is an OK prof. He talks a lot, sometimes about stuff that is urelated to the class. He usually kills time in classes by doing these stupid brain teasers or doing some group work stuff that is pretty boring. He was "ok".
org behaviour is just a dry boring subject, no matter who teaches it. Neil relies too much on in class group work. The material for the class could have been taught with just one hour per week of class time. Basically, its the material not the prof that sucks, so only take the class if u have to
Deserves credit for trying really hard to make boring subject matter interesting, even though he isn't always successful. Gives clear guidelines of what he expects on assignments, and the exams were both relatively easy. Seems to care about his job. I can't complain.
Awesome guy...I really enjoyed his class. If you do the work, it will be a breeze.
He is an interesting prof, but the course material is boring. He's hard marker but provides extremely helpful feedback on mistakes you make. The best part is the class activites, a way to kill the boredom in class. Simply Superb. A pleasure to be in class.
An awesome guy. His combination of lectures and in-class activities made the class fun and interesting. I had his class at 8am on Monday mornings and yet I would always be looking forward to that class. A very helpful and approachable guy, the only problem is that he is a slightly hard marker. I would definately recommend his class to everyone.
Neil is a great guy, and his class was really fun and knowledgeable at the same time. He asked for and genuinely cared about student input which I thought was terrific on his part. He is also a part-time basketball coach, man i'd love to test his game one on one, although i'm sure he wouldn't stand a chance (just kidding Neil!).
Love him, love him, love him...he is the greatest prof at Ryerson
Only take this course if it is absolutely required of your program. While he seems like a nice enough guy, he is a very hard marker, and his standards are high for a second year course. He fills up the whole 3 hours of the class with a lot of unnecessary activities. Take MHR505 in continuing education instead!

the course is easy the material is easy but he is not that great. his lectures are straight from the powerpoint, and the games are often a boring and a waste of time. He also goes easier on his few favourites (how do i know... i was one!)
Great course, great guy. Neil tries his best to make the course as interesting and fun for everyone as is possible. He really tries hard, and you can definitely tell. He puts a lot of enthusiasm into his lectures, and into his preparation for class. You'd only be doing yourself a misservice by not taking one of Neil's courses!
Finance Majors beware! Your asked to beleive way too much garbage. It is a huge waste of time and I regret fully having taken it. It is boring, and the major term paper is rediculously hard. I spent dozens of hours working on it to get a B -. Unless you are very comfortable participating take another class. What a waste of time.
He's not a bad prof. He's not a hard marker for his midterms, but he is tough on essay type assignments. Class isn't too boring, lots of activites involved, but sometimes it's a waste of time!
Has a terrible haircut. gives crappy marks. avoid him.
everything you need to know for the exam he posts online in detail. i didnt touch my text and did pretty well.
he is so so unclear about projects, doesnt explain much, his project outline is very confusing, pick group members for us is a stupid idea, but his tests r ok, but he doenst respect stupids, my class got yelled or critizised at many times, thats sad
don't buy the supplementary text.. waste of money.. he just wants you to buy it so he can make money (he wrote it). he told my class we were slow.
Neil is NOT a hard prof. He is just looking for basic understanding, good writing skills and class participation. There is no reason why people shouldn't get an A in his class.
hes a really nice guy and its fun going to class. my favorite class all semester. but he IS a hard marker on the group project. midterms are not bad!
He's a really good prof. He is very clear about assignments and exams. He even posts sample team assignments, and mid-term questions with answers. There is no reason for students not to get at least an A-. He is really knowledgable, and I enjoyed his class.
LOVES to pick his favourites. If you don't participate, you are definitely not one of his favourites. his marks are totally based on that. Otherwise his lectures are very clear and organized. he wasted the first two classes on how to basically improve him as a professor and on making a psychological contract. just tell him what he wants to hear.
Very nice guy. Clear on expectations, gives lots of examples of what he wants on case studies. Glance at the text book, then focus on his notes for the exams. Approachable and available to help students succeed.
A crafty devious individual who portrays himself as caring and open and approachable. Really he isn't, hes actually stubborn, pompous and closed minded. Class discussions were redundant as there was really only one answer. His expectations change like the weather and his marking makes no sense. AVOID unless sadistic
I know he reads these haha... But he is a great professor that clearly outlines what he expects for each section on a test (MC and short answer). You do practice cases in class to help u prepare for final and if u goto his office for help for stuff like case, guaranteed A right there.. I definitely recommend him. Make sure u do the surveys though!
Ghostbusters III, the revenge of Egon Spengler! Good Prof, very dry course material. Group work killed my mark. Got stuck with a bunch of weiners.
He's a really good prof. I don't see why everyone's complaining so much about him. So long as you attend all the lectures, make notes, and get your assignments done on time, you'll be fine. He has even provided examples of the case study. What more would one want?
Even though he reads these comments, its shocking that he doesnt even take them into consideration. He has perhaps ruined business for me and complicated one of the easiest topics with his useless in-class experiments and unfair marking. Its also weird that I got an A in MHR 405 but am struggling to get a C in 505. Trust me do not take his class!!!
Lectures - some material is dry but covers information you will need to know in the cases/midterms/exams. Good job of mix mode teaching. Assignments/Cases - fair, you have ample opportunity to go see him. Midterm/Final - fair, covers all material covered on PPTs. Be reasonaable, dont' expect to get an A without working for it.
if you guys have to take this course, please do not take it with him. The work i have completed for him and the end results will prove why i am saying this. Even the best work will not get a d in this class. If you have to take the course, take it with someone else, please i am begging you.
He's a great prof. Tells you exactly what you need to know for both the mid term and exam. The team project/report is tedious and a lot of work but at this point you have to expect that. He gives you fantastic examples of all assignments and as long as you follow them you will get an A.
Puts up a warm front, appears to be approachable, but when you do approach him, he is really cold. Sounds like a hypocrite when he preaches about how he knows how to make good managers out of us.
He definitely picks his "favourites" in the class which can get annoying. If you're not the type to constantly participate, then don't take his class. Material is straightforward but his marking is really subjective on the cases.
Helpful and insightful
Such a waste of time. Random music during lecture, to keep people awake and he always looks proud when it plays. He pretty much just reads you the text book.
Enthusiastic about the stuff he teaches. Only went to his lectures for the evil clicker assignments only though. I don't know how he is in seminars but in large lectures with 300 people, any prof is going to find it difficult to keep a majority of the students interested. Power-points were also worthless...missing half the chapter's concepts
i felt sorry for this proff, only attended his lectures for the clicker ex,all his slideshows come from the text book
Always plays random music in his lectures... hes really enthusiastic about the material. He also speaks really loud into the mike so sometimes my ears start bleeding..
It is not worth it going to the lecture..he has random music playing along with his slides. It is useless. Just attended the class for the clicker!
His lectures slides are extremely pointless as they are missing SO MUCH information.. Has random music playing throughout his 1 hour lecture just to keep people awake.. only attended class because of the evil clicker! I should mention that your mark in this class really depends on the person you get in your 2 hour seminars.. overall he's mediocre..
Useless professor, has his favourites, don't take him
Useless professor. Doesn't explain anything in a interesting manner or in way relate-able to the textbook. Your seminar prof is much more important
It seems that people don't understand the purpose of Neil's music selections in class. It's not "random" - It actually serves 2 purposes: 1. Reinforcement of the topic matter (the lyrics that are played relate to the theory and/or chapter we're discussing. 2. It's a unique approach to lecturing that makes the class more interesting in my opinion.
Useless course and useless prof. I never knew HR was so boring and pointless until I came to Ryerson.
If you are a student who usually does well in school, u'll do well. He was my seminar prof and he was great and very helpful. The people who rate him low are the people who do poorly because they don't take the class seriously and they don't study! He's a great prof, he's not mean and I enjoyed being in his class:)
Great professor who knows what hes doing. He wants kids to actually learn the material as opposed to just making you read text. Gets you involved and you work in teams to get assignments done. If you want a class that has a high level of 'interactiveness' go with the Rothenburg.
He is the best MHR professor, he will help you understand the course and teach u how to apply the OB theories. Take him!
He is a 65 year old two year old. He is argumentitive and obnoxious. If you want to feel like you're dealing with a small child, take his class. If you want to enjoy the course and keep you average up, switch sections. The material is very useful, but you will need to rely on the textbook a lot... his explanations of most concepts make 0 sense
I don't like him. He's very sarcastic and kind of rude. Almost every word that comes out of his mouth is sarcasm. His lectures make little sense,i'm always left more confused after
He is a good profressor. Not one of the best but still pretty good. Lectures are somewhat interesting and I didn't really have any problems with him.
Really good prof when it comes to lectures. He makes the material easy to understand.
Rude and obnoxious. Unapproachable. Highly recommend you don't take ANY courses with him especially if you really care about your grades. Ended up with a decent mark (B+) but would NEVER take a class with him again. Very inconsiderate.
He makes an easy course MHR 72 very difficult. Class avrg for midterm was 53% ! for friken MHR. Got an 85 because i studied like a maniac you need the textbook for it. the scored negotiations are just random marks you will either get a good mark or bad and you will have no idea how you got that mark. The final exam is a take home marked hard
Good course, interesting bargaining sessions, yet could be unpredictable , so you will never know if you really do good or not. Study a lot for the midterm, straight out of the text book. Final exam get's you quite busy for a take home, but was a good final and and experience overall :)!
Midterm is straight text book. Read and memorize it all!! I got 91% on the midterm just cause i memorized every single list. A couple comments saying he isn’t approachable. That’s a HUGE lie. his office hours were great. I have no idea why people are saying he isn’t approachable. It is not an easy class, I busted and only got an A-
Neil cares a lot about his students and he does his best to help them. He is a VERY approachable and supportive professor, I wish I took more HR courses with him. Not hard to get an A if you work for it. Read the text, participate in the class and prepare for the simulations, you will do well.
I had Neil in 405, 505 and 721. I purposely tried to get into his classes again and again cause I personally liked his teaching style. He can appear to be a bit short with people sometimes, and is a little sarcastic. If you have thicker skin and want a prof who tells you how it is, then Neil is your guy. P.S Don't try to negotiate your 721 mark lol
Interesting Class, the most useful as you do a lot of practical learning which helps you remember things a lot better. Very organized but not very approachable. Final is a take home which is a plus.
Great prof, very knowledge, very helpful if you have any questions. Though the midterm and final is a lot of writing and the TA marked tough and did not give any feedback, the course was still fun. The second half of actually practicing with negotiations was the best part. Not all textbook related.
This prof does not mark one thing himself, found the marking inconsistent. His teaching methods are not great - he reads the slides and plays the videos. The take home exam is random no course content to lead into it - almost like a surprise… with little to no instruction. Easy enough course, just frustrated with the random grading
Good prof but lectures are boring, will make u sleep and a not a tough but a hard marker, makes u work for the grade. Picks on you occasionally and asks you questions. Overall a good prof.
gr8 prof..!! :)))))))
Professor Neil Rothenberg is a professor that falls in between those who favor him and those who don't. He is a normal professor who has a passion to teach students that was clearly demonstrated through his lectures. The lectures, however are longer than necessary at times which took away the attention of students greatly.
Neil is a good professor, he knows the material well. Engages students. His lectures are interesting, and he makes students think. There are tons of homework for CMHR741, and reading textbook is a must. He is very big on participation, punctuality and attendance. Very approachable and supportive.
He's a good prof. Just do your part and study for the multiple choice tests and you should be good. If you usually get A's you will get an A in this class, and same thing if you get B's. Definitely not a bird course. You have to know the material for the exam and tests.
He is a good prof. Course is HEAVY on HW for every class & lots of assignments. Make sure you are SPECIFIC for the POP &SASS assignment or you wont get good grade. He loves people who participate so make yourself known to him. He is very knowledgeable &gives good lecture. The course is just a lot of work. Easy work but VERY time consuming
He was one of the most caring profs I've ever had! He marks really fairly and is really understanding. Quiz and exam were VERY straightforward. Studying off the textbook and slides would get you an easy A. For the POP project and the SASS report make sure you put in a lot of effort and details to get a good mark.
There are 3 negotiations which are progressively more and more challenging. The midterm was very easy, just read and review his slides. The exam (take home) was fairly easy, but you for sure need to use the textbook. Classes are sometimes dry, but he marks attendance so SHOW UP and watch a movie... He also plays music and is very nice.
Understanding and nice professor, and very approachable outside of classroom. He's big on participation so try to say a few things in each class so you get full participation marks! For the group project, SASS, POP report, etc just ask him if there's any confusion, he's very open and willing to help people succeed.
The 3 negotiations progressively get harder and harder. They seem kind of dumb because they're based on points and not really value. Midterm was pretty easy but the take home exam you need the textbook and he marks it pretty hard. Don't miss too many classes or you will lose marks.
I had him for 741 and 721. He always says he hates when profs try to try to trick students on assignments and tests with vague instructions. He says just do exactly as your askd in the rubric and youll do well. 741 group project is easy if you have a good group and pop assignment is long. take his advice and start early and itll be so easy. I
Lectures are somewhat stale but he is a good prof who really cares about the success of his students. If you show up to class and take the time to learn the material you should do well
He's a great prof. he posts everything online so you dont have to go to class but its good to go to the first 2-3 classes as he explains how to write the case study. You need to study for the tests even tho its multiple choice. The powerpoints are enough to get a good grade just make sure you actually know how to apply it.
attendance is very important to this proff, talks about absenteeism a lot . Do not try to leave during the break he grills you. slides are posted online and he intentionally leaves stuff out. if you don't go to class you will be uninformed. its an easy enough course, recommend him if you are able to attend his classes
Overall my experience with professor Rothenberg was very good, the course consisted of two tests, case study and a final exam. The test questions are straight from test banks, and more importantly for the case study FOLLOW HIS GUIDELINES IF YOU WANT A GOOD MARK, he wants his case study done in his way. Go to class and do those worksheet questions.
Very good professor, he is very knowledgeable, funny and gives excellent professional advice. Attendance and participation matter to do well in this class as well as he stresses following guidelines/instructions carefully.
It's easy & all in the textbook. Long boring lectures. He BURNS skippers on 20%case & 40%Final. Posted case instructions are deliberately misleading; real info given in-class verbally. No exam instructions posted, all verbal. These petty tricks disregard department's course management & RU accommodation policies . Students should complain. SWAP!
He's a good prof but he doesn't know how to teach. His case study method was really confusing and he's a really tough grader. You have to go to his every class to be informed as he doesn't post information online. He does 30 minutes of "meditation" in class which makes students so sleepy and unfocused.
He is a very sweet & knowledgeable guy who lived quite the interesting life. While he is very smart, his teaching tactics are rather boring and slow - perhaps because he is aging. On the plus side, you don't need to attend class. Read and understand the textbook and you will get an easy A. Test questions are from the the test bank which is online.
Neil is a great prof and he knows a lot about negotiations. However, this course is annoying, especially the scored negotiations. An A-/B+ is very attainable because Neil does not trick students on his midterm or the final. I recommend attending class to help with the exams.
Hes a very nice and caring. Gives clear grading criteria and tells us what hes expecting.
Knowledgeable. Approachable. Go to class. Read. you will do great. You'll actually learn useful skills from this class so its highly recommended. Part of the grade is doing mock negotiations so it can get you out of your shell if you have a hard time with confrontation.
Neil is very kind. This is one of those courses that teaches you something that you can use in any career. However, this course is NOT easy; you still have to put in work to study for the midterm and know the content for the take home exam (to accurately answer questions). Negotiations vary as your mark really depends on your team and opponent.
He is nice. Very tough grader. A large part of your mark is based on negotiations and he doesn't tell you how he marks the negotiations. Definitely a gamble taking this class. Does not provide clear guidelines and is disorganized.
Classes are pretty useless but you still have to go because of attendance marks. His ta's mark really tough so even though the course itself wasn't that hard the way things were marked was extremely tough. I think B/B+ is definitely easily possible but it's just hard to crack the A-/A category.
Solid prof. Slides are just headings so you have to study from the book for the midterm. Attendance is mandatory for scored negotiations. Final is take-home. Lectures are useless he just calls out people for answers. For scored negotiations, hope you have good teammates to get the most points. Midterm was decent MC and SA. Final is a case study.
Neil is a student focused prof. His class is clearly set up for you to succeed. Anything and everything you will need has been discussed THOROUGHLY in class. He assigns readings, and then goes over the readings, constantly reviewing previous material so everything stays fresh in your mind. His final exam (worth 40%) is very straight forward!
Very hard marker. The final exam was marked extremely tough with him docking major points for missing commas etc.
Neil is definitely a passionate professor. He's always excited to teach the material to the class and likes doing case studies in groups. He likes your answers in a specific way so you have to pay attention to that. Overall good prof. Lectures can get a bit heavy tho as he tends to use most of the 3 hours, the book helps a lot.
Such a great prof! Easy A, if you attend classes everything is straightforward.
SImply an awful professor. Takes forever to respond to emails, lectures are boring and does not provide timely feedback on assignments.
There is ALOT to read! I dont think this course helped me in any way, the simulations were a waste of time and the amount of things we have to do in this course is ridiculous. You dont need a textbook but his slides dont give you much either. You would have to attend class. ALSO, The exam (online) is RIDICULOUSLY long!
He has his TA do all the work for him. This course did not helped me in any way. He does not prepare you well for the exams. He does not do any review and just says exams are on "everything". His slides are pointless and the overall lecture is dry.
idk how he has a job.. terrible prof and told our class that he "dreaded" coming to our class.. how discouraging. he marks sooo hard for the exams and the only way you will get marks is through the scored negotiations if you have a good group. he constantly would refuse to teach if people didnt participate and complained abt cameras being off ..
Very easy professor. The whole course consists of a midterm which was a case, scored negotiations which guarantees an 80+ mark unless you don't do it and a final which also is not too bad. Textbook is useless but you will need it to search for things for the midterm and final. Overall just participate in the negotiations and you will be fine
He's a rather boring professor, but the class itself is an easy A. Readings are unnecessary, you just need to reference the book for the midterm and final (which are very easy). There are 3 scored negotiations and your grade on them fully depends on who you negotiate against in class, which can be unpredictable, but they are only worth 10% each.
Professor Rothenberg uses his plethora of knowledge on managing an organization in class, which is good in theory, until you don't learn like he teaches. Very easy to zone out. Very easy to lose marks if you're okay learning through the textbook. In fact, you have to learn before the lecture to complete weekly quizzes that aren't taught until after
He's ok. My group personally did not enjoy participating and he said that he would take marks off if we didn't answer. We did the work we just don't like participating. He marks group work from in class so you have to go to get marks. For exams, mine were case studies so pay attention to topics you used in group work and practice writing paragraphs
This prof was actually a pretty kind person, if you wanted to meet with him and talk about improving he was really helpful with that but this class was not as easy as I thought it was going to be. I had no idea what was going on 99% of the time and the exams were brutal. Very difficult class, nice guy though.
LOTS of reading. Prof. Neil is approachable, quickly responds to emails, easy to book an appointment and he really valued my efforts when I discussed my midterm results with him. He used in-class group assignment ( case studies) as a reinforcement for participating, not a fan of that but exams were in the same form so it's helpful.
Neil is overall a very nice, caring, and kind professor. I can tell he genuinely cares about the success of his students as he would allow us to go over and potentially improve our marks on the midterm or exam. Participation is very important to him and attendance is mandatory as there are in class assignments. Take this class with him if you can!
Honestly Neil is a great guy, but his lectures put people to sleep. He brings in alot of his life experience in his lectures. If you take this course with him, you have to follow his structure of writing, otherwise you will do poorly on his exams.
Very boring lectures consisting of him babbling for 3 hours. Mentions terms that aren't even in the textbook and then doesn't specify if they are needed for exams. TA has no clue how to grade examinations. Makes himself seem as an open and approachable prof but he definitely is not, he's stubborn and set in his ways. Also a very moody guy. AVOID.
Wonderful professor and very passionate. He adds a lot of flavor to his lectures. He is forthcoming about what will be covered in the exams and what he expects from the students. People complaining about his grading/teaching are almost certainly not attending his classes.
