-seems goofy, explanation in laymens terms, exam was hell though
PREPARE TO DIE ON THE FINAL EXAM!
Origins and Insertions won't be a big part of the test-my a**
Don't buy the text. Study EVERYTHING he says you don't need to know
just study like hell for the final.
he's goofy, and yes he teaches in layman, and yes exam was hard, study like hell
info seems easy, then you get killed on the fina exam
I liked his teaching...people think I am crazy. Study your ass off!
Is he human? Prepare to grab your ankles for the exams
Know everything he's ever said...and more!
make his passion for anatomy your passion if you want to do well
amazing anatomy prof. but the final will kick your butt
The exams were fair and not so tough. He's easy to understand and always ends class early!
Just give up....nothing will help you!
The material he presents 'seems' easy, but you have to know EVERYTHING about ANYTHING in anatomy for the exams or you're screwed!! Prepare to STUDY & STUDY & STUDY...you can't wing it!
If you want to do well, bring a recorder and listen to his lectures again. If you pay attention the second time around, you'll ace the final.
This guy is a great Prof, but his exams are killer. OH MY GOD, what a great way to drop the GPA.
haven't had one of his tests yet, but his lectures are clear and he seems helpful
u got to listen everything carefully he has ever said in his lectures, even though it may seem unimportant to u .
eat, sleep, breathe anatomy if you want to pass the final.
he's a good prof but oh my god! his tests are killer. He tests u on what u dont know. This course is soo time-consuming.
Nice, very smart guy. Approachable, answers questions. VERY difficult tests...and lectures too fast.
hard tests!!! always uses double negatives. But he always ends class early!
Really funny! Although I'm not sure he realizes what he says is funny, but it is! He's one of the smartest professors I've had.
very intelligent man - he knows his material so be prepared for hard exams. Lectures fast, not very approachable
Neil is by far THE WORST TEACHER (not prof) I have ever had the experience of coming in contact. He is COLD, DISTANT and ignorant. His social skills are beyond lacking. TO be successful, one must be able to communicate, many profs CANNOT do this because they have had NO Educational Experience.
Prof. Smith is incredibly intelligent and extremely helpful. I don't know what the person who posted before me was talking about. He was always willing to clarify anything that that was asked, and was very CLEAR and CONCISE with his words. His tests are fairly hard, but if you study, you'll do well.
good prof, really intelligent, but his tests are the hardest in the course. as long as you study for it you'll do fine. really good explainer.
Worst prof ever! Lectures were so unbelievably BORING & POITLESS - he just READ to us the lecture notes provided and added nothing. Midterms were extremely difficult unless you can visualize in 3D from 2D drawings. He will ask exactly what you don't know. Don't take this course.
Walking anatomy bible...the end.
This guy is probably one of the most boring professors out there, tends to go too indepth into the material for the course, it being Human Anatomy for Fine Arts and all. Tests are multiple choice but they are really hard. Purely based on notes, it was a waste to even buy the textbook.
Would not shut up during the exam + the first test. Someone literaly had to tel him to shut up during the exam. He also scared the crap out of everyone when he said "you have 30 seconds left...until you have 10 minutes left to finish your exam". Furthermore, he can't teach for crap. Avoid him at all costs.
This man knows his stuff, and he is very intelligent. However, you will not understand the lectures unless you can memorize all the bones, land marks and the list goes on. IF YOU REALLY NEED TO TAKE THIS COURSE, make sure you read the text book and lecture notes months in advance.
I'm sitting here studying for the millionth hour for this course's midterm, and I still don't know anything. There is WAY too much stuff to be remembered, those who don't have a photographic, amazing memory for detail will end up like me- frustrated and probably failing.
Lectures are easy to follow, speaks loudly and goes at a good pace. only downfall is that his exams are pretty hard
I will give him credit, he knows his stuff. However, he expects YOU to know it on a level that you'd think more reasonable for a first year med student, not someone taking a mandatory science course that is supposed to be geared towards the fine arts. His exams are way too hard. When a class average on a midterm is 45%, the problem is the prof.
Ridiculously hard. It is obviously NOT Human Anatomy for the FINE ARTS so much as it is Human Anatomy for people with a fairly decent science background that a lot of fine arts student do NOT have. People who are decent students come out of his exams feeling a complete lack of confidence in their performance, regardless of how long they studied.
Amazing proffessor
Very hard course and Professor Smith isn't the greatest lecturer. He should start realizing that we aren't in Medical School. I regret taking this class!
Study your butts off! An A is attainable, but you have to start studying at least one week or two before each midterm. I mean really study! Otherwise a decent lecturer. He is approachable after the class ends ( although there is usually a long line!)
Had him for regional anat. Just blazes through the material, and when you ask questions he doesnt know the answer(he goes so fast cuz he doesnt want to answer qs).Tests are really hard. Dont go to lectures, study on your own..use the clinical anatomy book not the new Gray's text, he takes his qs from the clinical book. Nice guys in person though.
Neil Smith is one of the most unhelpful teachers I've ever had in 4 years of university. It's almost as if he goes out of his way to make the env as least conducive to learning. He REFUSES to answer questions ABOUT his questions on the tests. He makes it difficult to see the correct answers. RECORD this class if you want an A+.
His first time teaching Anatomy in the summer... man was he DRY... the first class in the morning and he was just so monotone that he barely got half the class' attention... tests are hard if you dont memorize everything in the lab manual but if you do then it's a breeze; he basically just reads off his notes so you don't even have to attend class.
lectures are useless
Not bad overall...knows his stuff. Exams can be tricky, but he is very open to questions.
Flies through the material and seems like he's lost interest in what he's saying because he's taught the same course so many times. Tests are very difficult.
Clear/Bad Temper/Uninterested prof. A is achievable. HNo warnign on examjust 1 minute left. He threw a fit because someone was still writing, and said he wouldn't count it. Also, on the overhead and on the exam was written "Invidulators will NOT answer any questions regarding the questions on the exam". Horrible! People asked,he listened,no answer.
There is a greater likelihood you will survive skydiving without a parachute, than his class.
Tough class, Tests are extremely hard, doesnt help you with much. late giving marks back, could of done a better job but seems like he just didnt care
Prof. Smith's class is tough, but fair if you know your stuff...really study and follow along and it's fine -- get behind and slack off and you're in trouble.
okay here is the deal with prof smith..he is scared of the large class he teaches plain and simple so he reads off his ideas from his course kit and tries very little to elaborate because he is afraid he might say something stupid..but if you do go up to him you get to find out that he can describe everything pretty well and he is very clear
one of the worst cant stand him.....
neil smith has to be the worst prof in the world....he cant teach, he snaps in an instant if you dont stop writing during his ridiculously hard tests....he DOESNT answer exam questions that HE WROTE....and i can keep going but its not worth it....good luck to you if you HAVE to take his classes. i cant stand him
I did very well in my midterm, however I do agree with all the postings here that his exam is unnecessarily difficult for a novice. Ease it up Dr.Smith, we're not in med school just yet!
I just got done with this class. I thought the exam was fair. Although, without good understanding of the material, it would have been hard. So study really hard for the tests, give yourself time to go over and over the material, practice! practice! practice! and you'll be good.
His tests and exams are really fair, but you have to study well for them. His lectures tend to be a little dry, but that might be because of what he's teaching. He's approachable and really knowledgeable too. He definitely knows his anatomy
Good prof, has a course kit that describes exactly what has to be known, no guess work. Alot of material yes, but needed for future courses. Overall a tuff prof, but if you know ur stuff you should be ok
Hes not a bad professor, its just that ANATOMY itself is boring if you dont have an interest in it. If you can, take it alone in the summer because you need to know EVERYTHING.He puts everything you need to know in the course kit which is AWESOME. just do the work and youll be fine
Tests are hard and not fair
Exams are very hard and tricky. You must know everything in the course kit inside out!
Take him for what he's worth... An Anatomy sage. As long as you're not looking for a hand holding kind of prof you won't feel the need to make lame complaints like half the raters on this site.
Tests are very very hard. The majority of the class is failing or close to failing. You think if everything in the book is on the test it will be easy but it's not.
exams are very difficult. yes he knows his stuff but still makes exams a killer
If you are looking to simply fulfill a NATS requirement (ie: liberal arts students) DO NOT take this course as it is BY FAR one of the HARDEST NATS courses. The tests and the exams are VERY HARD! However, Neil Smith is a VERY intelligent professor and he is ALWAYS available after class to clarify material. STUDY HARD...and A is achievable!
Best prof. If you like anatomy it is a great course. He is helpful and he is very clear. BUY the book and study from it and from the lectures and ull do good. those who write that he is bad just dont want to work, and should go back to highschool.
Basal Ganglia
Very Intelligent prof, very approachable, does have a good sense of humor.Lecture notes are very clear and exactly whats on exam. No need for text book, as he has additional pics/diagrams that are very helpful for visual learners.STUDY! MEMORIZE! make sure to understand. Test questions require it.
This guy has a complex over being PhD-less and it shows in his exams. I got a B on his first midterm and I need A's for my goals. Consequently, his course took over my life. Watch for tricks. Study very hard, use every tool you have.
Just reads off the slides pretty much so just read and memorize the course kit. You don't really need the book unless you're unsure...tests are really really tough. The material is easy, its just one of those types that have 3 choices and then the other to choices are all of the above, a&b, a,b&c e.t.c
BEST! Smart and funny! If you have him as your prof you r lucky! Might b tough sometimes but still fun times! <3
Took 3 anatomy courses with this prof and loved them!! Prof. Smith is very knowledgeable, very clear about what he wants you to know for exams, and makes the exams challenging. No idea what everyone else is talking about, Professor Smith was excellent! KNOW YOUR STUFF, because his midterms will make you think for sure!
Had Kelton & Smith for the summer Anatomy course...Kelton taught the muscles & bones & his tests were all appl. and were tricky. Smith was really clear and basically said everything in the course kit. good lecturer, but USE the textbook! test questions are clearly answered in the book as the course kit is minimal in information. Study & get an A
took this course in summer as well. before the final exam, i read all the other comments about him and they all scared the hell out of me, but to be honest, if you memorize the course kit fully. your good. i got an A+ by studying 3 hours after every lecture.
I also took this course in the summer and if you study after every class you;ll do fine! BUT MAKE SURE YOU KEEP UP WITH THE WORK! also, for those who think the course is not hard - IT IS; I looked over the marks for the midterm and there was only ONE A+ and a few (prob 7 or 8 As..)
I was that one A+ on the midterm... Absorbing every detail of lecture and memorizing the course kit should be sufficient preparation so that if you THINK before answering each question on the tests, you should get an A+. I did it entirely without the textbook, and I had no idea the answers were scattered in the text as a previous commenter noted.
Lecture Not very clear for the speed. Either slow down just a bit or be clearer.
tough exams, some questions like- pic of a guy in push up position: which muscles are being used when he's going up and which when he's lowering himself lol But awesome course. prof is a bit monotone but knows what's he's talking about. If you like Anatomy you'll be fine, after all it's all understanding & memorizing. taking his kine anatomy in sep
He's a really good prof . But of course this is university so you have to STUDYYYY LIKE I MEAN STUDY . Read the course kit prior to lecture , write down everything he says, review it when you're done , go over the textbook , make notes . Honestly, if you study 10-12 hrs a week you should be okay. For exams be calm , relax and think . Good luck!
One of the worst professors I have ever encountered. His demands far exceed the demands of a 4th year university course, yet alone a 2nd year. His approach is simple, however it offers no prep for his exams. be weary of taking a course with him as a professor, you will be frustrated constantly and wont be able to do a thing about it!
Bottom Line: Don't take this course. I came to York with a full university degree and I am taking Nursing now... I've undergone 4 and a half years of university and I can say that his classes are the most difficult thing I have ever done. I studied my butt off and failed his first two midterms... His exams make no sense and he tricks you.
Not sure what everyone's getting so hung up about. This guy is an absolute genius and knows his stuff. He wants you to understand the material not just straight memorize. Its a fascinating course and I've gotten As on both midterms so its definitely not as bad as some make it seem. Neil is amazing.
There were 2 wrongly labelled bones on the lab exam and the class is still trying to get those 2 marks from him but no response. be critical and ask questions. The course kit consists of a list of all structures that you need to memorize with crappy hand drawings. Self study with text book recommended!
Awesome Prof. Got My A+
Straight up if youre not planning on studying for 2-3 hours every single day for this course, dont bother. This course will take over your life. Such an interesting course but tests are difficult. Dont buy the textbook you'll regret it! Just get the course kit! Tests material is made up of 100% course kit! Good luck!
Don't listen to the whiners. This is university, get used to studying. Attend class, do well on the labs, study every day. His tests are difficult, but it is VERY possible to get an A/A+. He was more challenging than the other professors, but he'll help you with anything if you ask. Labs are also easy.
Can't get through this course without having the entire course kit memorized. The tests are tricky so you have to read the questions throughly before answering. Really boring lectures, he would put me to sleep but can't blame the guy because the material itself isn't all that interesting.
A or A+ is achievable. For a 3 credit course, you'll spend a lot of time studying more than other courses because it is somewhat detail oriented.
people are just scaring you, his exam was so easy...got an A+, just know the course kit inside out, pay attention in lecture and be calm during the exam and there's no reason you will fail. Good luck!
He's a very good prof, knows his stuff. Not intimidating when you ask for help. People think anatomy is easy but really it's not. His exams are fair. This course is not an easy A but an easy B. Study hard, put in the time and do well on labs ( very easy marks) you can get an A.
honestly...best prof at york. reads exactly everything on the course kit nothing extra. shows you while hes talking. All u do is memorize everything in course kit...and its not that hard. got 93 on all his midterms. all you gotta do is enjoy the course...the mark will come, gauranteed...ps i listened in class and wrote notes at home, via recordings
He had so many typos in the course kit and lecture slides, terrible lecture style too.
Professor Smith is a GREAT professor. As he does speak fast, I recommend people studying the notes before you attend lecture. It'll be easier to follow along that way. Anatomy in general is a fast paced course so you need to keep up. Neil is incredibly helpful and hilarious when he makes jokes to ease the tension
so far he is the worst prof ive had at york. he may know his stuff but his lectures are monotone and are more like him reading a script than teaching a class and sometimes he ends with out the class knowing its over. his exam section was terrible question are overly long and take up too much time reading it majority of the class failed his part.
Probably the most time consuming course you'll ever take in university. His exam questions are based on specific details so you definitely better know your stuff.
He's an AMAZING professor! The best at York! He's so chill and although people take it as monotone, he doesn't try to intimidate you. He doesn't try to spoon feed you and this course was awesome! I loved this prof! Have fun in the course!
This prof has no mercy for students. He talks like a speed boat and ends class very early without ensuring students understand the concepts. NOT RECOMMENDED. He gives us 45 minutes to do 40 questions that are so extremely detailed. Impossible midterm. The class's average was 50%.
Words can't describe how much I enjoyed Professor Smith's teachings. He's very knowledgeable and honestly, there are no tricks on the test. You just need to know your material. Study the course kit, AND THE LECTURE SLIDES. Sure it's a lot of work, but go figure, it's anatomy. Just study, that's all it is. Those who complain probably didn't study
One of the worst profs I've ever had in my life. Absolutely ridiculous. He says his exams are based on the notes, however it's all based on what he says in class. His exam questions are a paragraph each, and he gives you little time to do the entire exam. Not approachable, and not even interested to help the students.
Not a bad prof, but he rushes his lectures. He does allow you to ask questions when he's done though so just ask about anything you missed. He doesn't really prepare you too much for the exam so make sure you keep up with readings and pay attention.
His exams are long paragraphs. Way too wordy. Gives you 45 minutes to do 40 questions which are all paragraphs. Half of the class failed and he did not even care. His midterm is way too difficult and very difficult to complete. More than half of the class did not finish his midterm and he did not take this into account or even consider bell curving
his tests are hard to study for and he teaches so fast, its hard to pass this course.
Such a hard prof. Super hard test..... Anatomy is hard in general.
He's teaching this course "backwards" as he himself put it at least a dozen times. The exact line he uses is "one of the disadvantages of doing this course backwards....". The only disadvantage is for us, the students. The majority of us are lost. He goes way too fast, and his tests are ridiculously hard.
let me make it simple, if dont study ever single until end of semester you wont able to get the mark you want and pass midterms are extremely hard and confusing
I love prof smith! He knows his stuff and very clear in teaching it. He does go a little fast but you can always go later and listen to the recordings he puts up. His tests will force you to think and will encourage you to adopt a better way of in depth learning. If you want to go to med school, get ready for profs like him.
Neil is a brilliant professor. I am coming fresh off my second and last midterm with him and with this professor what you see is what you get. He is very straight forward and expects you to learn the material that he presents, nothing more nothing less. I would strongly recomend this prof for kine 2031, but don't expect to slack off and get marks.
Tests are MC, usually with 8 options per q, the latter 4 being combinations of the former 4. Q's simply ask for you to choose the "best" answer with no specific question asked, with each of the possible answers coming from unrelated topics. Unless you have a lot of time to put in (30-50 hT) or few other courses, I strongly advise a different prof.
Listen. I am 3rd year. I got a near perfect gpa first 2 yrr at York. I am in his class right now- and got low 80s on his first test, and waiting results for his second test. So this answer is coming from someone smart. The man is HARD How to do well? 1)Memorize all details of course kit 2)Look at diagrams to see organs in relation to each
By far the worst professor I have ever had. There is a way to make tests tough but fair, unfortunately this is not how Neil Smith does it. His tests do not test your knowledge on the material but on how well you are at tricky tests. If you are looking at reviews to see if you should stay in class, DROP and take with someone else. class avg under 50
He tests you on material that is not included in what he tells you you need to know. His multiple choice questions have options A - H. Goodluck.
-He is monotone. -He doesn't answer questions -You might as well not go to class and study off the course kit and his slides because he just READS off the kit in class anyway -His questions on the exam are vague with 8 even more vague options - Each wron question on the midterm is 1% off your final mark in the course cuz each midterm is 20 Qs
Worst professor at York by far. Everything I have to say about him is negative. Impossible UNFAIR tests (8 multiple choice options? C'mon) . Horrible lecturer (monotonous, doesn't answer questions, ZERO charisma or personality.) THANK GOD, Roger Kelton taught the second half of this course.
Smith was a terrible prof. Tests consisted of only 20 questions with 8 options to test your knowledge. Even if you memorize the course kit for his part, one question has multiple topics in them to easily confuse you. His lectures are short, I watched most of them online as you can match up with his speaking speed. Kelton is funny but just as bad.
I have never worked so hard to get a B in a course before. He's knows the material extremely well. Teaches anatomy strictly from memory. He's very clear and answers any question you have. No idea what people are talking about, he answers everyone. Tests are hard as hell, there's no q, you just pick the most correct answer. Study smart!!!
Neil knows his stuff very well, but tends to be scripted and monotone when he lectures. His tests are ridiculously difficult and after endless hours of studying I still did bad on the two midterms. Labs will boost your mark by a landslide. Do not take a class with Neil for fun, because you will suffer.
His tests are no doubt extremely difficult in that they are unclear and he does not allow students to ask questions during tests which i found to be bizarre. I re-watched lectures to get down every detail because I didn't know what he would ask. I finished with A+, but it was one of the most challengingtime intensive course I have taken at york.
His tests are hard and unfair. His tests are full of errors and when you try to consult him about them, he simply says "it's too bad". He doesn't teach, he memorizes the textbook and recites it to the class.
Oh my.... Its a 2 hour lecture, which usually only takes an hour and a bit (max), but it feels like days! Has no excitement when he teaches, and its hard to pay attention to... He memorized the book, and recites it. Better off just studying the book and skipping class. All tests are straight from the lab book notes, no extra stuff...
Go to class, study the material, go to labs, you'll do well in this class.
Not the most exciting prof but he teaches you exactly what you need to know and the outline is clear from the beginning. Tests are tough but if you do what he tells you from the beginning, which is to review and memorize, you'll be fine. Leave it to the last minute and you'll fail
The guy is a walking encyclopedia. Sure the lectures aren't the most exciting thing, but it's hard to make muscle attachments and nerve innervation interesting. Go to class, and then watch his lectures online, the second time through you'll realize he actually makes perfect sense. Tests aren't "hard", you just have to understand the material.
So organized and prompt. Answers emails right away and puts up test results quickly. He says it from the beginning: the material is NOT hard it's just pure memorization. I got A+ but really had to work for it. I really liked him but his tests were extremely difficult and tricky.
He has the lectures memorized and speaks very fast. His tests are tricky (20 MC questions with up to 8 options). Memorize every single thing in the course kit! This is not a course you can study for the night before the test. Keep up! Labs are easy mark boosters.
The man knows his stuff inside-out and backwards. It is very difficult to get an A+ in this course, but he gives you everything you need to succeed (course kit). Just have a wicked memory, and take it while you don't have that heavy of course load. Makes you really think about anatomy, I haven't run into anyone who can do that better.
Average professor, does not really reply to emails or help with problems.
His material is a bit more challenging than Kelton, however, his final exam was easy.. surprisingly. Kelton allowed multiple choice options that led from a-h, whereas Smith had occasionally a-e. Study the course kit and you will ace the course completely.
HORRIBLE AND I MEAN HORRIBLE. TAKE GLENDON ANATOMY OR ANY OTHER ANATOMY BUT NEIL SMITH IS HORRIBLE
Best Prof in the kine department! Barely opened a textbook and got an B+
Anatomy course. Pure memorization. Lectures were as interesting as you can be for material of this type. Easy exams if you study a lot. Course kit is very useful, textbook is unnecessary unless you learn better that way.
Dr. Smith was really knowledgeable in this course. Although many say his half of the course is harder, I personally found learning the systems a lot easier and interesting than studying muscles and bones. He speaks fast in the beginning on the easier content but remember that only the material in the course kit is examinable.
Unless you're a KINE student, take a different Anatomy course (NATS/Glendon). Class average was under 60%. Exam questions are extremely detailed. A passable class for sure, but a real GPA killer. If you must take this course, adjust your course load to compensate. Heed this warning if you want to get into grad school.
This is a course where input output. Want that good mark? Get ready to put in countless hours daily. I would say at least 2 hours a day of keeping up with the dense material. Smith was clear in his lectures (to me at least) and would answer any question I had with no problem. Tests are hard if you don't study, read questions on exams carefully!
I got an A in this class and this is how: Went to every single lab and got a 100% on the lab tests, easiest 30% of your final mark. I chose to write only the final which made it worth 70%. I started studying 2 weeks before the exam. I read the lecture notes and learned them inside out. Listened to his recorded lectures and that was that.
His tests are impossible. For an anatomy course which mostly should require memorization of body parts, this was way beyond that. He would ask questions like if you fall from a tree which bone you would hit first... you get the point.. avoid his class!!!
got a 94 taking physio 1 with tanya, got a 72 in neil's half of the course for ana 1, used same studying technique, aka study a couple of days before
Took anatomy in summer school he did the first half which was muscles and bones. Test was pretty hard- 53 multiple choice average was 48% but then he added 7% to each persons grade to "compensate for questions and or answers that some may have misunderstood and thus answered incorrectly.". Wouldn't take him again by choice.
he literally is the worst prof i have ever meet he is very tricky, i will never take a class with him again!!
What a horrifying experience, do whatever you can to not take this anatomy class since he's always teaching it. He doesn't really teach in class and his exams ask for much more information than an anatomy course. Never again!!
He certainly knows the material; although it won't help you pass. He just stands there and reads off the course kit to you. No tips, tricks, or context to help you memorize it. The exam requires more than memorization anyway. His questions require you be able to memorize the organs in relation to other body systems. Every year is the same. Avoid!
the course is really difficult, and he teaches and speaks so quickly.
HE IS THE WORST i ended up with a b in this course because of the help of Richardson. neil is the very tricky and doesn't care about his student pls make sure the other person teaching half of the course is as good as richardson if not don't take this class
Smith knows anatomy like the back of his hand. His tests are tough but fair. Some of his questions relate to actually useful practical applications. His lectures are quick but thorough. My advice is to record and listen to them regularly and EARLY because they will become crystal clear after replaying a few times. Work hard and you'll be fine.
this course was horrendous and destroyed my GPA. it's WAY too heavy for an undergraduate introductory anatomy course. the tests are based off 70 pages of definitions so get ready to memorize every fibre of every bone in the body and localize it relative to anything. the exam questions are beyond difficult.. like we're not in med school here.
He has the whole course kit memorized and repeats it in lecture, so there is no point of going to class. He's a mono-tone speaker. Your course kit is you bible, know it inside out!!! The options for the multiple choice went to "f" so pay attention to detail!
Lectures are often redundant (no need to even attend them since they aren't useful). You will definitely fall asleep attending lectures since he goes way too fast. Just discipline yourself to watch the lectures at home. Tests are unnecessarily difficult. Lectures do not help at all. Self-learning test structure using higher order thinking questions
Absolute worst. Extremely monotonous, rude when asked questions and doesn't care about students. Not worth taking with him.
He does not know how to teach or engage students.
Don't bother going to class, just listen to lecture recordings since he goes way to fast for any student to keep up. Tests are difficult BUT fair. If you want an A you have to work for it and put in hours of studying.
This course was the worst experience I've had in undergrad. Neil Smith doesn't teach, he reads you the course kit. Lectures at lighting speed and is rather brash. His test is just out of this world. Extremely detailed application questions that he doesn't prepare you for at all. The labs will be your saving grace. Avoid this course if you can!
He's great, answers questions, knows his stuff & consolidates all the info you need into 2 formats: a coursekit & lecture videos. Ppl complaining that he repeats the coursekit don't realize he's giving u all the tools to succeed. If u don't understand readings, watch his videos to clarify. Definitely spend time & pace yourself memorizing info.
Approachable, always helpful in Q&A. Responds to emails in abt an hour! Anatomy is a tough subject, be prepared to memorize lots of info. He records his lectures so no need to worry if you miss class & they're helpful when studying. Coursekit is the bible of this course. 3 exams (MC), 3 lab tests. 1st exam and lab tests are easiest, so take them!
This is a very difficult course and needs a lot of memorization. Everything comes from the course kit. If you get a bad grade you cannot really blame the prof because at the end of the day it all depends on how hard you study. He always posts his lecture recordings on time which is really helpful. Class attendance is not mandatory.
Its a hard course and he doesnt help much either. He speaks fast and teaches as though we are already very knowledgeable in anatomy. When people would ask questions his responses would confuse me even more. I just made sure to prepare before lecture and teach myself. Exams were about 40 questions with only 45-50 minutes. Take it and teach yourself.
Gives very good concise explanations. Seems like hes going too fast but thats just the course (kine 2031), so much content to cover, if he slowed down for u he'd never get through content. If you listen to lecture recordings (which you might have to) and slow it down, youll realize how good his explanations are.
Horrible proff I have no idea how he's teaching it like his tests go up to G are you kidding me?
dont know how to teach
horrrrribleeeeeeeee avoid
The course itself is material heavy and the tests expect too much from students compared to how the profs teach and the duration of time you have to study. If you have no prior knowledge get ready to really push yourself. I really think that this course should be full year or at least material needs to be cut down! Current struggling student!
If you're used to getting A/A+ in other courses, and you put in work for this class you will end up with A/A+. 20% is basically given to you as lab test, the rest of the material is straight from the book. All the people complaining here have to put in too much effort for getting a good mark.
Multiple choice questions have up to 8 options sometimes. For a course like this, you're given very little time to really think during tests, so studying the ins and outs are the only way to succeed. Overall, content heavy course, prof doesn't make it any easier, tested material heavily derived from course kit, fast lecturer, GPA killer.
I absolutely adore Prof. Smith! I had him for General Anatomy (2031 if I'm not mistaken), and just finished Regional Anatomy 1 with him. While both courses are content-heavy, his expectations in all tests are very clear and straight-forward. Know the material in and out, and you'll do fine. There are absolutely no trick questions in tests.
Don't bother going to lecture. Prof. Smith reguirgitates the textbook for 50 minutes 3 times a week. His teaching style is best described as lazy. His examples are unclear and he blasts through material faster than a pace that is productive. The lectures are only content based while the exams have many application questions. Just memorize everythin
Going into this class, I was scared because of all the reviews on here. Honestly, anatomy is hard. And unless you know how to study for it, you will find the course difficult. Learn structures in relation to each other & similarities and differences b/w them, not just memorizing where things are. Neil smith ain't got nothin on you. He's boring.
If you're taking this class, get ready to memorize a bunch of information but not get tested on it. Instead, everyone gets tested on application questions regarding being a doctor!!! I mean, I don't really care what happens to a woman's back when she's pregnant, idk how me memorizing bones is going to help with that. Ridiculous class, do not take!
-very difficult course, heavy reading
Do the work. Get an A. Not a hard course if you're willing to put in the work
Neil Smith tells you exactly what he'll be testing for. He gives you all the information you need (may not be the most interesting, but this kind of anatomy is pure memorization anyway) and the tests are always straightforward, no tricks. The averages on his midterms are usually quite high and he still removes questions people find unfair
This course requires a lot of independent studying outside of class and constant review of the material (don't cram before the midterms). His lectures are way too fast for you to understand the material for the first time in class. Midterms are somewhat difficult because they're all application, which he does not prepare you for.
Since this course is very difficult, I think a lot of people direct their anger towards Neil. I found his lectures great; very concise and clear about concepts. I never found myself struggling to understand him and being stuck on a topic. It's just the nature of the course, it's A LOT of content and you have to study hard, but Neil is fine.
He is a great prof who definitely knows his stuff. Tests are hard and VERY content heavy. You need to know how everything works together and not simply memorize individual aspects. If you review and study well enough ahead, you'll do fine. Probably the hardest course I've taken so far though.
the course is tough and requires a lot of memorizing but Smith is not a bad prof. he speaks pretty fast though, so you may feel lost if you sit and listen in lecture but if you view the lecture recordings, you can take your time to understand what he's saying. labs are not mandatory to attend.
This is def a hard course. A lot of things to learn but it's exciting information since it's all structures within your body. There's just so much information. So study hard. Textbook required
The course itself is very difficult and will require spread out/ongoing studying, you cannot cram and rely on the mere memorization of information. Pay attention to when he ties together concepts and refers to the application of muscles/nerves. Test are not tricky, but if you do bad don't worry so did everyone else, and he boosts big time.
Anatomy itself is hard. HARD. Neil is a good prof but he reads from the manual essentially. Whole class failed the first midterm, biggest tip is study immediately after, go to all the study session and peer tutor. Because without help you're literally digging a grave for yourself. Retake if you have too.
The course itself is very hard. The prof on the other hand, is mediocre. You definitely need to study constantly. Majority of the class either does really bad, or fails. Be prepared to put in a lot of effort!
He reads from the book, word for word, and is very knowledgeable about the field. BUT his tests were honestly next level, you have to know everything in this class. Dont straight up memorize, first memorize, then fill in the gaps by understanding the info. Pretty hard A
I agree that he reads from the book but his book is also very well written so it makes sense for him to do so. His tests were straightforward and no trick questions. This is anatomy people, IT IS SUPPOSE TO BE HARD. Don't blame him for your lack of studying and prep. Anatomy is alot harder in other schools so actually put effort instead of whining.
Neil is a good prof. Anyone that complains failed to study properly. He reads from his book, which is exceptionally written. Anatomy isnt meant to be easy, and if you actually study properly, youd be amazed at how Intersting it can be.
