gives you the same writing assignment of finding 3 landmarks in the chapter and writing about them each week then changes the topic to that weeks chapter. Did not learn/retain anything from his logic of teaching or assignments/quizzes given.
This professor does not teach you at all. He uses the entire class telling random stories and hardly goes off the powerpoint and when he does its vague and hard to follow. He only has one paper a midterm and a final, the midterm and final are based off intense study guides and are in essay form, you can't use any notes. DOES NOT TEACH!
Professor Vaz was a very entertaining professor to have. He makes class fun and finds common date references to what he teaches. It might be a little hard to follow at the beginning but once you get used to how he teaches, the class is a breeze. Be ready to do a writing assignment each week, super easy though. The reviews are the tests.
The best professor ive had while attending Seminole State. The most knowledgeable professor ive had and makes the class entertaining. Im an average student and i generally hate going to school but he made me actually want to go to class and learn the most Ive learned since ive been in school. If you pay attention youll pass
Took him for 2 classes. The best professor ive had while attending Seminole State. The most knowledgeable professor ive had and makes the class entertaining. Im an average student and i generally hate going to school but he made me actually want to go to class and learn the most Ive learned since ive been in school. If you pay attention youll pass
Excellent! Dr. Vaz is the most knowledgeable professor I've had. He makes learning interesting. His expectations are the same as any other "Professor." You are in control of passing or failing his class. Pay attention, take Good Notes and STUDY. You must show that you Know the material that has been presented to you. I would DEFINITELY take again!!
Took both of his classes. He's very knowledgeable and you can tell he cares about what he teaches! He relates the material to the students and the times to make it easy to understand. He's funny, will make the class entertaining, and you'll have interesting discussions. But he is a tough grader and all the tests are essays. Lots of writing.
This professor is by far the worst professor Ive had thus far for my course, when he gives you feedback he is very rude and not encouraging. You are graded by very few things and hes a very tough grader for no reason.
Dr. Vaz is extremely knowledgeable and makes sure that you understand the subject. Although attendance is not mandatory he did give random pop quizzes over the notes. He will answer any questions you have and always reminds you that his office is always open. He gives great feedback on papers, homework, and exams.
He is very funny but all the assignments are written papers and he grades pretty tough on them. It was hard to get any higher than a C on any paper. Attendance isn't mandatory but pop quizzes are given if lack of attendance is shown
Dr. Neil Vaz is the BEST TEACHER EVER. I ENJOYED HIS CLASS! HE IS VERY SMART, FUN, CARING, AND ALWAYS AVAILABLE WHEN NEEDED! HIGLYYYY RECOMMENDED :) IF YOU DO THE WORK, YOU ARE DEFINITELY GOING TO PASS HIS CLASS!
He is a great teacher, does give pop quizzes but they are honestly super easy. You do have to do some writing but he is very helpful when it comes to the papers and will tell you what he is looking for in exams and teaches you well so you don't fail. He's also super funny and you will not dread going to this class instead look forward to it.
He barely lectured on history. I learned more about his garden than American history because of how off topic we got. We only had 3 assignments but they were worth 20% or more of our entire grade. He expected dissertation level writing too. We had a pop quiz every week but take notes and youll be fine. I didnt open the book so dont waste your money
I failed due to the pop quizzes he had early in the morning. Some days he would start the pop quiz before class even started. You have to arrive 10mins earlier than class starts to pass. The pop quizzes are easy but this was a 9am class so traffic made it hard to get there. DO NOT TAKE HIM! skip or miss a day you will fail, book never used
He made us write a research paper 8-11pgs long. It was a weird format too, one that students write in order to complete the requirements for a doctoral degree; a thesis. It took me forever to understand how to even write a paper with footnotes. He also makes it hard/uncomfortable to ask any questions on the research paper.
Professor Neil Vaz is incredible, he is kind and extremely funny and knowledgeable. there is the main paper that you have to write throughout the semester and some pop quizzes on last classes notes but other than that there isn't much work. take his class, you won't regret it.
Dr. Neil Vaz was by far my favorite professor at Seminole State College. He does require participation and is tough on grading but it is worth the effort. He is very good at making people think outside the box, and I now view some things differently. I would take another class by him in a heartbeat!
I really enjoyed this class with Dr. Vaz. He gives great feedback on almost everything he wants fixed and is very helpful. He has weekly 250 word papers and discussions, (He drops three of the each) yet, they are very rewarding as they give you a very clear understanding of the work. Also about 30-40 pages a week from the textbook.
Dr. Vaz made class very fun and exciting to attend. He does have weekly writings and a big research paper but I think that he does a really good job at explaining the assignments and giving good feedback to improve your grade. He really cares about history and his students. He can also do a backflip which is pretty neat.
Mr. Vaz Is an phenomenal Professor. His lectures are very entertaining and funny yet unbelievably Knowledgeable. He's very passionate about this his class and the integrity of this course. I learned a lot in his class! He's gives extra credit and will work with you to ensure you pass his class.
didnt like this class or the professor. papers for every single hw assignment. pop quizzes are very challenging. relies heavily on lectures if you miss a day you wont pass. doesnt respond to emails.
During this semester, it included a lot of writing from mini 250+ word assignments each week to 8-page papers for the midterm, final paper, and final exam.
This class's grade comes from writing about a topic and showing your understanding of it, making the class much easier so long as you pay attention during lectures. He has a great classroom environment and is so far the only person to have made at all interested in this class's subject. He assigns a lot of work but you only have to do half of it.
his class is tough but overall great teacher. he is understanding and gives great feedback for papers.
Do not take unless youre Einstein with no social life that can write an 8 page research paper and 2 more papers a week and discussions and exams. He is taking a beginner community college course and turning it into a Harvard Doctorate program class. NOOOO. Had to drop. Was very disappointed wanted to complete in summer just couldnt.
Professor Vaz was awesome. He is very knowledgable and give great feedback on papers. If you are trying to get an easy A this in not the class for you. I would suggest recording the class this will help you with studying. Professor Vaz rocks!!!
He gives a lot of heavy assignments. He grades very hard and is very passive aggressive when asking him questions about assignments. I would definitely not take him if writing is not your strong suit.
He is very harsh on grading for 2 point worth assignments that you have to read 20-40 page chapters and take over an hour to do just to receive a catty remark and a bad grade. He's not specific on what he wants you to write about but will take points off just because he wants to. I do not recommend him for this class if ur not into writing,
I, and my English professors consider me a phenomenal writer. This professor really challenged that. He requires a specific format other than MLA and will not help you understand it. The papers are long, and the assignments are 4 papers a week. He is catty in grading, and pretty rude when you ask for help. I have never been so stressed. DO NOT TAKE
DO NOT take him. Very rude and expects a lot from you, especially when Covid hit.
I would never ever recommend this teacher to anybody. What sense does it make to have an 8 PAGE PAPER during an pandemic and for an elective class? Also, is a harsh grader for tiny mistakes as in Chicago style writing which I have never written in before as well. I barely passed with an B and that was due to extra credit.
Hard grader, makes you think outside of the question he asks.. Essay-like responses/ essays as homework. Zooms were informational but did not really help with the homework (2/5 rating on the PP slides). Little to no quizzes.
Professor Vaz has a great personality, grades fair, and loves to allow students to voice their opinions on any topic. He also provides instructive feedback on papers.
honestly i think the reviews on here are not in fact as every person has a different experience. I think if you follow his sylabus and READ WHAT HES ASKING YOU TO READ you will get an easy a! he responded back to me super quick and even graded assignments the next day after turning them in. I would say it was a great course and teacher .
Professor Vaz is great! He gets you to think about your position on things, as opposed to just spoon feeding you his opinion. His lectures are easy to fallow and he fosters great discussion. He is a tough but fair professor. If you stay on top of the reading you should have no problem with this class.
Professor Vaz was great, just be prepared for lengthy assignments. They aren't necessarily too hard he just makes you actually work for your grade. I also appreciate that he is a little left leaning, it is apparent in the questions he asks. This class really made me think. I enjoyed it.
He is one of those teachers who really makes you think. I didn't even like history before taking his class but after I finished it I am really fascinated by it. He lets you see multiple perspectives on different topics instead of telling you the traditional way to think.
History has never been my subject and it still isn't but Prof Vaz made it interesting. He is a very nice and caring person and allows you to express your self. Even though he makes you think about what you are learning he makes it fun! His assignments are a little heavy on the writing side but they are easy! But overall, great/fun class!! :)
If I had the opportunity to retake this professor, I would. The teacher made the material enjoyable to read and learn about, even though it was a lot of work. He also seemed very passionate about what he taught. This is probably one of the most chill and funny teachers on campus. As long as you do your work, the class is easy.
He is a very tough grader and is rude in his responses when you ask him questions. He wanted me to use footnote citations and when i asked for help he never responded to my email. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
I don't know how or why this professor has any good ratings. I took his online class and it was awful. He's unclear of his expectations and when asked about them he gives vague answers that don't help you. He's a tough grader to the point where I gave up, I felt like nothing I did would help my grade in his class because he never gives full credit!
If you want a good grade and not messed up your GPA do not take this professor. This class is a History class not ENC 1101 . The amount of unecessary deductions is un call for.
I would 10/10 never take again. He is VERY VAGUE in his directions & when you message him to ask for further clarification he replies with one sentence, he does not even elaborate! It feels like nothing you ever do is good enough and all of his assignments is writing and citations, this is not an English class but it feels like it!! Horrible class
I can't stress this enough, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! he is very vague about his expectations and directions on assignments, everything you do will be writing assignments and citations! he is very rude when you message him for clarification on things. I have no idea how he is a teacher he is very unprofessional!
VERY RUDE. wish I knew about this site before I signed up for his class! He is a tough grader even when you put your blood and sweat into these long assignments. writing assignments every week plus 8-page research paper, he expects you to come into this class knowing how to do footnotes because he does not explain or teach you, very bad class!!
Very unprofessional, does not give good feedback that helps you, LOTS OF WRITING! you would think this was an English class. he is very vague when you ask him about assignments. he should not be teaching any online classes I would not recommend this class to anyone. RUN!!!
Dr. Vaz is a great instructor. For my class an essay was due every week but only required (usually) min of 300 words. Many of the reading for class were highly informative. Dr.Vaz made lectures in class fun and allowed students to discuss opposing POV on topics. Class was well structured and fun! He grades extremely fast which is a huge plus!
Although Dr. Vaz's class requires effort, a lot of ratings left here misrepresents him. I got to know Dr. Vaz and he is approachable and kind despite his demeanor. He's willing to help you succeed in the class and I truly enjoyed learning despite the workload. A challenge helps you grow, and his class has provided the outcome of growth for me.
Professor Vaz is an amazing teacher! There are nine 200 word easy essays, but he only grades five of them so you can pick and choose which ones you want to do. He is very down to earth and loves to get the class talking in debates. My suggestion is to have a list of cited evidence for the debates (trust me it will come in handy)
This guy makes history hard. He gives an unreasonable amount of papers. When you ask him for help, his responses are very plain.
Harder than an intro class should be but go above and beyond for everything. Show that you really understand the topic and write more than he expects. I went to his office hours and he was very helpful and a pretty cool guy. Also write a lot more than required for discussions because he gives extra credit there. Hard class just work for your grade.
There are a lot of writing assignments, if you think this is going to be an easy A then I advise to pick a different class. He is amazing, makes lectures fun, he's not PC so if you're sensitive find a new professor. His AMH course was probably one of the most meaningful and one of my favorite courses. You will learn how to write well after this.
If you are looking for a course where a professor actually teaches or even responds to you more than a sentence (or 2 if you're lucky) this is it. There are no lectures, only readings that are usually 20 pages long, and there are 3 given a week for a 200 word essay only worth 4 points. Not worth the effort.
He is the most unprofessional professor you will ever take. I URGE females to not take this class. He is young looking and flirts with girl students. Very biased political opinions with a history class as well.
He deducted 0.05 points from one of my papers. I feel like that's enough said. He is extremely picky with grading. He's also super hard to contact. I reached out to him through email, then through canvas with no responses. As a last hope, I literally wrote a comment under an assignment asking abt it and he said "I saw the email" with no response??
Vaz's emphasis on Chicago Turabian footnotes is worth 20% of a paper's grade even if the essay itself is exemplary and properly cited in a way that would be accepted in the professional world. His class is incredibly writing heavy and it's best to start off with mediocre work because if one starts high expect a hard time getting an A.
Every week you have to write 300 words about a political topic and when you use quotations you cannot count them in your word count. For example, a midterm was 1800 words and it really ended up being a 15 page research paper. He is politically biased and this class made me very confused on what happened pertaining to history and not just politics.
Yes, there are A LOT of writing assignments and LOTS to read but you'll get through it. He's a good teacher and will help out when needed. There is an 8 page paper due at the end of the semester and occasionally pop quizzes. Does drop some low assignments though which is helpful towards the end. Honestly, you don't really need to write down notes.
Very tough but fair grader. The interesting professor got me excited to learn about history! There were frequent group debates but they weren't taken too seriously as the class as a whole had a pretty fun and talkative vibe. You can tell that Prof. Vaz has a real passion for history and would answer any question that arose. Overall, tough but fun!
Dr. Vaz creates an environment in his lectures where all students are encouraged to discuss the material with each other, and all differing opinions are valid. There is a ton of work to do in this class and long readings basically every week. Vaz offers plenty of extra credit, though, and if you're disciplined, you should pass pretty easily.
I came back two years later to give this review that's how much I enjoyed his class. Each week he goes over a topic the whole class debates and discusses them. He is hilarious and I was always excited to go to class. Only negative is there is a 7 page paper due at the end of the semester, however, you have a lot of range on what topic you pick.
This class waa amazing . The lectures and debates were enjoyable and fun . There was alot of assignments but they were easy because everything is provided on the home page , examples , outlines , sources etc.
I'm making this review inside his class right now. He is lecture heavy, gives pop quizzes, heavy HEAVY grader he isn't satisfied ever. Tough class if you don't know crap about politics or history. Does NOT accept late work. Constant essays for HW (DIFFICULT). Final in essay form worth very little of your grade. Very chatty. Overall HATE IT.
He never gives full points, if you turn in something late he will rather give you the points on a late writing assignment that is worth 4 points vs give you the points for a paper that is worth 20% of your grade, nah he rather watch you fail.
I took professor Neil Vaz online for AMH 2020. He is a good and caring professor but he does give a lot of homework, essays, and discussion posts. Make sure to read the guidelines for each assignment since he is indeed a tough grader. Be sure to ask questions before submitting an assignment.
I took professor Vaz for my honors history class. He was a nice teacher and made lectures as interesting as possible, however he gives ZERO rubrics to any of the assignments. Sometimes, in class he would tell us what to include, but not always and it would not be listed on the assignments. Ask questions if you aren't sure about something.
My honors class was very small, which allowed our class to get into various discussions outside the lecture material, which was a huge plus. However, Dr. Vaz's feedback is not the best when it came to writing assignments. He did not provide rubrics. Sometimes I would miss 1 point or less, but there was no rubric highlighting my mistakes.
Great Professor. I enjoy his class. I would take his class again.
Dr.Vaz is awesome. He expects a lot from his students and he can be tough on grading. However he is very available and provides many resources for you to succeed. Dont expect to come into this class and pass by doing bare minimum. Not a big history fan but learned a lot when studying for this class. I would take another class w/ Dr.Vaz.
You better LOVE to write essays, often. I'm talking about HEAVY word essays. He is a TOUGH grader. You better LOVE to read. Just over the top for the most general history class.
I have never had a professor grade as tough as he does. He is never happy with your work. The amount of writing is unreal. 1800 word essays. Then 8 page essays. Unbelievably tough grader. Weekly essays, often back to back. Hard to learn any history when your terrified and more focused on the need for perfection with the work itself...
Weekly writing assignments and discussion posts. Have to read upwards of 30 pages for these assignments. you also have an 8-page research paper that is worked on throughout the course beginning in the first week. He lectures every class and there are debates about the writing assignments. Midterm= 3 prompts 600 words each. Final= 1800-word essay
I was not happy with this professor. You may have to double-email him because he is hard to get ahold of. The feedback he gives back is not always helpful. I did not feel cared about as a student at all, even when I reached out for help. I do not recommend this professor.
The assignments he gives are not easy. The feedback he gives is also not the best at times. I tried emailing for help but had to send him a second email before I got a response. After reaching out for help my questions still weren't answered and I felt like he didn't care at all. I do not recommend this professor.
Honestly my favorite teacher EVER, he promotes actual critical thinking skills and thinking for yourself! This class is not for the faint of heart in the sense that one must actually care about demonstrating what you've learned and there is no ABCD or bottling up, everything is open-ended, but not hard if you pay attention & read the material.
There are only writing based assignments with 1-3 sources that you must use w/ Turabian/Chicago-style citations. Has random pop quizzes, discussion posts, weekly 350-word min papers, researcher paper throughout the semester w/ assignments/progress checkpoints. Along with a mid-term and final paper. Not ideal if you work or have a few heavy classes.
Dr. Vaz is an exceptional professor. His assignments come with clear guidelines and consistent feedback, and his supportive approach ensures that students have all the tools they need to excel. Read the feedback and correct your mistakes, its that easy. Im baffled Dr. Vaz's does not have a higher rating! One of my best professors at SSC thus far.
Overall, I really enjoyed Dr. Vaz' class. He is a great professor, very knowledgeable and is open to you participating heavily in the discussion. Homework can be very time-consuming though, various articles to read and write about. Make sure you are a good writer before taking this class, as all the homework is writing, but not a very tough grader.
Fair warning to anyone taking Neil for your upcoming semester, he is horrendous! Please do yourself the service of unregistering for his class, or switch to a different professor if possible, no other options for the class? Wait until next semester to take it, it just is not worth the stress and the amount of work needed for such a simple class.
Professor Vaz is an AMAZING professor hands down! Genuinely one of the best professors Seminole State has. He is really passionate about history and what he teaches, it is obvious in his great lectures. His class is a class you don't want to miss, if you like to skip class or not even come to don't even sign up. Take him if you have chance!
100% would rec. this Professor a, truly cares about you as a student, if you show that you care about the class and put in effort. There are pop quizzes so make sure you pay attention in class, but super easy. Be prepared for lots for writings, but it's worth it b/c you have class debates that follow the assignments.
Nice guy, but his workload is overwhelming with reading 30+ pages of articles as homework and then having us cite said articles which I feel is so unnecessary as this is a history class not writing. I know other professors for this course don't assign nearly as much work so make things easier for yourself and pick an easier professor.
Professor Vaz's class was one of my favorite classes. The class is not about memorizing history dates or people as much as it is about debates, critical thinking, and actually learning. There are a lot of writing assignments and readings, but they are all interesting topics that we discuss later. Definitely recommend!
take any professor but this one for a gen ed class. It is a lot of reading and essays. every week you have to read at a min of 2 articles that can be anywhere from 5 pages to 50 pages. and then write 200 words. sometimes more than once a week. There is a 8 page essay. and a 1800 word assignment. The assignments are ridicules. do not pick this guy!
Really funny and easy to listen to during lectures. Goes on many interesting tangents. Remains neutral on political issues so there is very little bias in the class. Would definitely recommend his history class.
Lots of writing, and there is so much reading with the assignments.
Attendance was not mandatory for my class. Very lecture heavy but was useful info and was engaging. Most of the class is writing papers but he is very clear on what he wants and is not a tough grader. Very communicative.
This guy wants to teach english
This professor is very essay heavy in terms of assignments and exams. Weekly essays, discussion posts every 2 weeks, an 8 page research paper, a mid term exam with 3 questions that have to be 600 words in each answer. Absolutely insane. Should be an english teacher with how many essays he wants...
Very work heavy. Had to write an 8 page research paper as our final project. Not an easy course, and late work is not accepted, but he graded fairly, had clear rubrics, and provided good feedback. I actually felt like I learned something from this class too, and my final paper was on something I actually cared about
lots of essays pop quiz you have to read a lot of articles hates when students use the phone in class WARNING speaks Spanish lol sometimes gets off topic but overall, a nice professor.
I personally had an awful experience with him. As a heads up, he assigns lots of lengthy assignments with lots of reading. He may leave very vague comments on your work but if he suspects that you're struggling he will not reach out to you as a caring professor, instead he will expect you to email him. He is rude and inconsiderate.I don't recommend
