Completely useless professor. Tests are impossible unless you memorize the smallest facts in the book. I will never take a class with her again. Attending her classes made me want to rip my hair out. Not sure how she was hired. Picks favorites and will not hesitate to get 2 inches from your face in lectures. Avoid her at all costs.
She seemed nice but dear god her class is awful. The quizzes she gives makes you feel like you have to know every news event, even the stupid local news. You never know what to expect. She gives study guides that are more stressful than the tests themselves. If you have her, drop the class now. Run, run while you still can!!
The whole class is getting between a C - F. We're all failing the quizzes and not being told how to improve. I thought this class would be a nice editing refresher, instead I'm probably going to fail a 300-level class. Do not take.
Is not helpful, difficult to understand. Terrible advisor. Doesn't want you to do well, and hasn't had industry experience in years so she doesn't know what she's talking aboult
Not a good professor. Does not work with you. Doesn't take you seriously and when you ask for help she makes you feel lazy and incompetent. DON'T TAKE HER CLASS.
Didn't think this class was that bad. You have quizzes daily but they help your grade a lot. This class does require quite a bit of studying, so if you already have a packed schedule don't take it. Otherwise, it's fine. Prof. Young is funny. Offers good amount of extra credit.
The least helpful person I have met at OU. She can't answer the simplest question. I'm almost thinking about changing my major so that I can get a new adviser.
This teacher is difficult to understand and follow. She takes a long time to get to a point and often goes off on irritating useless tangents.
This class is tough for almost everyone. But Young is great. She really tries to help her students understand the material, is very understanding, and gives out extra credit almost every week. She knows this is a hard class. Don't take your frustrations out on her; she is a sweetheart.
This course is extremely difficult...one of my least favorite classes. Mrs.Young is a nice person, her lectures goes by fast. but the class is tough. Have 50 point quizzes after every lecture (twice a week) and about a 100 point tests every week. (you only have like 15-20 mins for the 100 point tests....) good luck.
When I took this class it was a flipped classroom and it was a terrible experience. Homework was doing outlines and listening to hour long podcasts and in class all we did was go over it. She has a lot of guest speakers. The class is pretty easy but I would never be able to deal with Professor Young again, she's annoying.
This class is difficult and you have to do a lot of work, but hey guess what, YOU'RE IN COLLEGE! Prof. Young is a great professor and really tries to help you understand journalism. She gives many chances for extra credit. If you actually try and go to class you will do fine.
By far one of my favorite professors. The stories/reviews made her/the class seem daunting, but she offers so many points and extra credit, it's pretty easy to get a decent grade if you do the assignments, go to class, and you know, do that school thing that you're sinking in debt for. Her interest and enthusiasm is what made studying language fun.
The class was a challenge, but Professor Young made that clear in the very beginning . She is a sweet and funny teacher and I will actually really miss her. I don't recommend the class if you're not going to do work, but if you're willing to put out a little effort- its a fun class.
This is a difficult course, but I learned a ton in this class! Professor Young really knows her stuff, and will do everything to help you, but you have to be willing to work. She is a very sweet person, and was always funny and engaging in class. She is one of the best professors I have had, and she really cares about you as a person. Take JOUR1330
Honestly, the worst professor I have ever encountered. Her test are extremely difficult, all the lectures are done on your own outside of class. Honestly she is lazy and wants to have class full of activities that do not prepare you for exams and make all the work and prep done outside the classroom. DO NOT TAKE HER
Prof. Young was a wonderful instructor. She was intelligent, kind, and well-spoken. She is funny and willing to put on a show to demonstrate a point. Greatly enjoyed her, and her course. Comes highly recommended.
Very interesting in class. The comments she makes helps students to better understand the material. However, for someone who preaches about 'conciseness', she can drag on. The class was easy. Just read the book, there are things that you need to memorize, but overall, an easy A/B if you put in the effort.
Grading standards were unclear, grading itself was subjective. There were a few times where she was undeniably wrong in marking answers incorrect, but after being proved wrong, she refused to give points back. This course taught me very little about working as an editor in the real world and the final was virtually unrelated to the course material.
The class was fairly interesting, but the assignments were absolutely stupid and pointless, and had nothing to do with Journalism. We had to act out skits? For what purpose, not sure. The exams were crazy hard. The professor was often wrong and didn't know what she was talking about.
At first she comes off as a super mean teacher but if you come participate and try she will be there for you 100 of the way Better come everyday because you will have quizzes or you will miss out on something important I ended with a C but I was very pleased with it Hardest journalism teacher at Ou
She comes off at first a little hard headed but she honestly wants the best for you. She has been the sweetest and most honest teacher that I have ever had here at OU. She will be there for you until the very end with helping you with your assignments to internships and even with personal advise.
I am a good student interested in journalism and I have never had a harder or meaner professor for a 1000 level class. No compassion for situations so don't even try to reason; she won't understand. I wish I never would have taken this course in order to learn like I had hoped and instead taken the opt out test. Do not sell your soul to this class
This class is difficult by nature. It's basically grammar boot camp, which could be incredibly boring. But she's such a lively person that I was never bored in class. Make sure you do the reading and take good notes. Lots of quizzes and extra credit opportunities. Take JOUR1330 with her if you have the chance.
Professor Young was by far my favorite professor this semester. She acknowledges the fact that grammar can be a pretty boring and tedious topic, and does her best to spice it up (and it works). She can be tough, but as long as you put forth a little bit of effort and do the homework, you should be fine. She gives a lot of extra credit, too.
Professor Young acknowledges the fact that grammar is a really boring subject but she does her best to make the class as interesting as possible. The tests and exams are really difficult. However, if you do study hard it is definitely possible to score well. Loads of extra credit opportunities that you should take advantage of.
Nerissa is hilarious. You can't not crack a smile when she's giving a lecture.
Nerissa Young is one of the most hilarious professors I've ever had. True, her class is hard. It all depends on how much time and effort you put in. To be successful, sit towards the front of the room and participate often. This will make her more willing to help you if she sees you working hard. I would take this again just because of her.
Nerissa is insane. She's the quintessential country-style grandma, I loved listening to her lectures. She'd always pull out those weird country analogies that nobody ever understood but they were funny. Class isn't hard at all if you pay attention and take notes, and have a basic sense of English grammar and spelling. Loved the class and Dr. Young.
Professor Young is awesome! She really knows her stuff and wants you to learn it. The class isn't too hard, but you have to work hard and go to class.
I found professor youngs class to be very difficult. Its a tough class but she is very knowledgeable on the subject matter. She offers a lot of extra credit which is super helpful especially if you are struggling in the class. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT AND BUY THE BOOKS. YOU WILL NEED IT! don't skip class, put in the time.
Professor Young is AMAZING. She is extremely over the top and crazy during the lectures at times, but her funny sense of humor and creative ways to remember things really helped me remember the information for the daily quizzes. Going to class definitely helped me keep a good grade and pass the class. Overall, Professor Young is awesome:)
Prof. Young is amazing. She loves journalism and it shows. The material itself is easy/interesting and Prof. Young makes learning it enjoyable. She is hilarious and lectures are always a laugh. Lots of quizzes but they're easy points, skipping class could result in missing one. Personally, this class was great and I never wanted to skip it anyway.
Nerissa's class is very hard but she is a great professor and will help you every step of the way. you have quizzes almost every day so don't skip class but you won't want to, she makes her lectures very enjoyable.
I loved Prof Young. Even though attendance is not mandatory, she gives a lot of in class quizzes so I would try not to miss any classes. But honestly I didn't want to miss a class anyway. She is so fun and I truly admire her as a professor. Her class was hard for me because I suck at grammar and that's all the first half of the semester is.
Nerissa is one of the most insightful, compassionate, and cognizant professors I've had thus far. She's also hilarious. You learn so much in her class. Do not skip; she assigns 50 point quizzes almost every class. If you do the reading and practice questions, the exams aren't too bad. Grading is based off total accumulated points, not percentages.
Great teacher. Very out there with high energy, but a fantastic professor.
Very mean. She does not acknowledge her wrong grading but would rather try to mark you even harder to teach you a lesson for challenging her. I was so disheartened by her attitude, that it started effecting my performance in general. Very discouraging for the amount of effort i genuinely made. Scared forever!
By far my favorite teacher I've had this semester. She treats her students like children; she's incredibly supportive and caring, and tries to make her lectures fun for the sake of her students. She motivates you to keep working hard. However, if you don't put in the effort you will not get a good grade. If you are trying, you can easily get an A/B
Professor Young's energy class it what keeps you awake. The class is hard, expect quizzes after lectures, the positive side is 70.00-79.99 grade scale is all C's there's no C- so you won't fail the class, but no C+. Study or you will fail. But overall even though I got a C, Professor Young was one of the best teachers I had at OU.
she cares a lot about her students. tough at the beginning but then gives out points for showing up
Prof. Young is by far, one of the best journalism professors here at OU. She really cares about her students and wants them to succeed in their future as journalists. I'd gladly take another class with her again, she's awesome!
An excellent teacher, Nerissa is a kind person who wants you to do the best in a class that itself is super difficult. For those who have to take this class anyway, this is the best teacher you could hope to have for it.
Professor Young is a great instructor. She is hilarious and always does a good job explaining things in her lectures. Expect quizzes after most of the lectures.
Awesome Professor
Show up to class and you will pass. Gives chances for extra credit. Make sure to look at review guides for test and you will be fine.
I genuinely liked Nerissa, she's kind and has a great sense of humor. I was nervous coming into her class because I had heard that it was extremely difficult, this was not the case. Don't get me wrong, this class is a lot of work but, the work itself isn't hard. Just be attentive and take notes, you'll do fine.
Professor Young is amazing! She really cares about all of her students and want them to learn. Attendance isn't mandatory, but she will give unannounced lecture quizzes so it's important to attend every class. Getting an A or B in this class is manageable if you show up to class and put in some effort.
I took this course online and we would meet occasionally over teams. Nerissa can be tough but she is genuinely kind and wants you to succeed. The course itself can be tough if you arent strong in grammar but if you can make it through the first half youll breeze through the rest of the semester. I would definitely take Nerissas courses again.
Professor Young's class is very heavily grammar-based, which makes sense for it being a first-level journalism class. though it was online I still felt it was taught very well and I enjoyed it.
While Nerissa is very sweet person and a good professor, this class is extremely difficult. It is also a VICO requirement for majors that it doesn't apply to so that doesn't help. The class is passable you just really have to work for it, take heavy notes and do the readings. The material isn't hard just extremely tedious, you have to know it well.
meeting times are unclear on the online session we have an assignment to do on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays but we do not always meet on those days. Her examples provided by certain workbook exercises are not helpful because she makes completely different questions on tests so if you struggle in grammar you will have a hard time in this class.
This class was engaging even though it was online. If you go over the material and do the assignments, which are both clear and straightforward, you will be fine. Professor Young is pretty funny too lol. I recommend this professor!
Be expected to learn the material on your own. Your only source of studying is brief presentations. You are also mainly graded by tests and quizzes, with very heavy studying required. Very few homework and NO extra credit opportunities to raise your grade. You better be good at tests!!!!
Be ready to teach the material to yourself! She is very unclear with directions and meeting times. She is very sweet yet sour.
She is absolutely awful. Her grading is unclear and does not follow rubrics given. She took all of her emotions out on our class and put us through so much. Please do not take her classes.
She's a good person but I dislike the setup of the class. You are teaching yourself everything and have very little time to ask questions in class if you are confused. There is a test or quiz almost every day you have class, whether you're in the physical class or not. Be prepared to spend hours studying if you want a good grade.
This class was difficult, it required a lot of studying and focus. Overall, I enjoyed the class and Professor Young was very kind and helpful. This class is taught through online lectures, so if you do have questions they have to wait until you meet in person. As long as you study, pay attention, and do the assignments you'll be okay.
Nerissa is a fun and enjoyable person to have in class but as a professor she certainly wasn't my favorite. She tends to overcomplicate things and make simple concepts much more confusing. I had this class as hybrid and because of this all lectures were online and tests/quizzes were in person. We didn't have as much time to get clarity on things.
Prof Young gets a bad rap because the subject matter is tough and really particular. The class is test and quiz heavy, but I think it's better than doing a bunch of papers and exercises. Study and you'll be fine. She's a really nice person and a funny teacher. She is always willing to help.
I took this class in a hybrid format because she already recorded her lectures from the pandemic and it sucked. I signed up for the class under the illusion that it was all in person, but was told otherwise in the class. The class would be fine in person, but it really sucked in the hybrid format.
Prof Young was great! She is the perfect prof for students that are prepared and engaged in class. She is very knowledgeable and knows the content she is teaching inside and out. Often times, aspects of this class, including parts of the hybrid format, were over complicated. I still feel that I learned a lot, and I have a lot of respect for her!
Professor Young is a great person and is very friendly, but not a good professor. Most of the class is online and she does little to help you prepare for the exams.
Prof Young is amazing! She is so funny, respected, and I appreciate how much she treats her students like adults / with respect. This class is transparently difficult and she makes sure to let you know this. You'll probably do poorly at first, but try to stick around until the second half. Participate, be organized, be prepared, and you'll do fine!
Professor Young is very professional and will treat you only as a professional peer. Do not expect her to go easy on you. You will only get an A in the class if you study consistently and work to understand material. Never miss class because it will count against you. Take the course online if you don't want at most 3 quizzes and tests every week.
This class was torturous. The prep work I did for everything felt worthless so my grades suffered. I reached out to her for help and never got any answers. The hybrid style doesn't make sense for this class. I am not one to just hope I'll scrape by in a class, but I've done everything I can at this point. Unless you have to, don't take this.
Professor Young explains the topics very well in her lectures but it's important to study and review them more than once. This class takes lots of effort and paying attention but tutors are accessible through the workshops she provides and she is easy to get in contact with if you email her in a professional style. She gets to know her students!
Prof. Young gets a bad rep for her class. It is the definition of a weed out class. The concepts can be tough, but if you prepare and do the work on time, you will see the results. The beginning of the class is hard, but the second half is easy. She was accessible outside of class to talk and wanted her students to succeed but won't hand it to you.
This class challenges you and is a weed-out class for journalism majors. Professor Young is very tough and doesn't let many things slide, so she gets a bad rep. But, she is a good professor and will like you if you ask questions and are engaged during class. The hybrid format is tough, but as long as you are respectful and study you should do fine.
Prof. Young is the worst professor I've encountered so far at Ohio University. She is an inconsistent grader, and I don't trust her grading because most of the time I catch something that she wrongfully marked points off for. She is also incredibly strict and difficult. Many people are on the brink of not passing her class, and she is fully aware.
It was her first semester teaching 2311 as a lab instructor and did not seem to be in communication with the main instructor. She was constantly second guessing herself and the course requirements and her expectations of us were very unclear. She is a great professor and has lots to teach, but her aggressive teaching style does not work with many.
As someone who enjoys/is good at grammar, this class wasn't all that difficult for me, at least at the beginning. I will say, once it got beyond that, it was a little more challenging. Young means well, cares about her students and is happy to go over issues in class, but she does have a "tough love" approach which can be frustrating at times.
Whole class was consistently failing or on the verge of. She's a good professor and seems passionate about journalism. But there was definitely a disconnect between how she teaches, and where the class was at in terms of skill level. Disheartening altogether. Good class to take if you know how to keep your head down and work hard. Learned a lot!
This class was horrible. It is a hybrid class and it shouldn't be. You have to teach yourself the material and only go to class for exams. When I reached out to Young for assistance, she pretty much told me I wasn't working hard enough and was pretty rude about it. I study and work on this class every day. Don't recommend taking this unless needed.
Hybrid class, I personally do not work well learning online resources and videos. 2/3 meetings a week are virtual (most weeks). If you can teach yourself the material you would be fine. She is a tough grader and the extra credit opportunities are so little that it is not worth it to do them.
she is a nice lady, and clearly cares a lot about journalism and its related fields in comms, but as a hybrid course you end up learning everything completely by yourself and she is not very helpful via email. the only real opportunity to ask questions definitively is immediately before tests. friendly person, kind of intimidating professor.
Professor Young gets a bad wrap. She is hilarious and is extremely knowledgable on the subjects that she teaches. Though she is intimidating, you learn a lot from her if you listen to the lectures and out the work in for it. Tests aren't awful if you study, either! Just put the time and work in and it will pay off and you will learn a lot.
Worst professor I've had at OU. Course is hybrid, but not advertised as such. Very inconsistent, difficult, and frankly rude. Very knowledgeable but wouldn't recommend this class to anyone. Said her 1000 level intro class was a "weed out" class, when most aren't journalism. Would not take this unless absolutely required.
If communism, fear mongering, and historical revisionism are your thing than this is the woke comrade for you.
Professor Young does a great job in trying to intrigue students in the very boring subject of grammar and it seems to work in an extent. The course is hybrid and the syllabus she provides details the complex schedule of when to come in and when to not. Other than that, she has a passion for teaching aspiring journalists.
This class somehow has more tests than lectures, and they're at a super hard difficulty. That being said, Prof Young is very knowledgeable in the subject and is a good teacher if you're willing to put in the work. That being said it is, in fact, a lot of work. She's got lots of energy which makes the boring subject entertaining.
Great human being. Extremely helpful and knowledgeable of the journalism world. Lots of big point tests that are closed-note and tough. After chapter 6 things get easier, but a few kids did have to drop the class.
After reading Nerissa's ratings, I was unnerved. But to my surprise, JOUR1330 has become one of my favorite courses thanks to her. Has a very 'tough-love' attitude, but she does love all of her students. This class is mostly online, so you mostly rely on yourself to learn the concepts. If you struggle with that, I do not recommend this course.
Terrible hybrid course format. Putting it nicely, her online lectures were the worst I've encountered here. Just dreadful. Does great job answering questions in person, but if you have a hard time following her online lectures, you're screwed. She is supportive in class and will help teach concepts. Should stick to doing all lectures in person.
Take this class with Terry instead if you want to do better... Nerissa's quizzes and exams are noooot open note, no extra credit offered either.
This class is hybrid and you teach yourself mostly everything. This class teaches AP style, which is difficult and annoying to learn. No reminders for online tests and quizzes, and no extra credit is offered. She is rude and it isn't funny or charming. An assignment/quiz/test due every class period. I'm so glad I never have to take this class again
I was nervous after reading Young's reviews, but she turned out to be a great professor. The class is definitely intense, especially for the first half of the semester, but if you stay on top of the online lectures and put in the study time, you'll do well. She's funny and genuinely cares about her students as well as the future of journalism.
