Organic is a difficult class but she helps make it easier. She is always willing and happy to help and she will work through problems with you in her office even when it is not her office hours.
She has ridiculously high standards for the exams, and the worse thing is that she does not even teach it to you. She expects you to be prepared for the class with her hard quizzes and exams, but she is not even prepared herself. She is also very rude.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
This class is the WORST class I have ever been in, the professor is no help and thinks we should just know stuff for class. If she does try to explain she CONFUSES THE WHOLE CLASS!!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! I don't think she even understood what she was teaching.
Way too difficult for a 1000 level course. Constantly unprepared for her lessons. Refused to review for any quizzes or tests. Had only 1 class session where she reviewed for the final for 1 hour! Grade based soley on quizzes and tests, no assignments.
Very unclear. Talked in circles until realized she was wrong. Did not feel like a Chem 1000 class.
she is the absolute worst proclaimed teacher i've ever taken. she has these high expectations that we should know everything yet she doesn't prepare us for crap. at least she should be caring enough to prepare for lecture. i can't believe i'm paying money
I took both semesters with her and she is the absoute worst teacher I have ever had. I dont know why she is still here and not fired yet.
Very pretty woman. Exams are too dificult. Lectures is very informative however exams are not representative of what is taught in class.
Not very clear with very high unreasonable expectations. It's lab which is suppose to help you understand the material, but she does not help you do that in any way.
WORST PROFESSOR I ever had in my college career. She does not know her materials and does not even prepare for the lab. We sit and wait 30 minutes waiting for her to set lab up bc she did not do it before hand like a good professor is suppose to.
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR for the reasons already mentioned, so avoid if possible.
Knows here stuff but expects too much from non Chem majors. Cant speak English. Lectures are not logically presented.
Very unprepared. I had her during the time she had her baby, very preoccupied. cannot understand her english. seemed like she was confused during her own lecture
Terrible professor, for all the above reasons...
Very nice teacher, gets a little ahead of herself at times though.
I had her for my Chem 1100 lab. She is pretty hard to understand at times, partially due to her english and partly because she's a fairly new teacher and new mom. In her defence she was always very willing to try and help you out.
Good, english is hard to understand but always willing to help out. Dedicated.
her class was easy, even though half of the class would disagree. but she could work on her announciation, and organization. other than that, do not buy the book.
Accent hard to understand. she's always willing to help during office hours.
Terrible teacher, take her husband, he is a better teacher.
So unclear. Tests were SO hard. Not recommended.
ALWAYS willing to help, doesn't deserve her rep, hard grader but it forces you to learn and work hard. Study and you'll do well.

Avoid at all cost
she is a nice teacher but she lectures very very fast and is hard to understand. her tests are HARD!!! take dr. russell!
OH MY GOSH! Now Dr. Stessman is very smart and intelligent! Have fun in class, but take a deep breath if you start falling behind because boy oh boy, her class just flies through the pages!
Very tough professor. Very hard to understand. But in the end if your there everyday and do all the activites and dont pass all the test she'll pass you anyways.
This women is by far the worst teacher that I have ever had. She is not concerned with helping her students to learn but simply getting through her lesson. She made fun of a man who asked questions made it seem as though his questions were holding us back. She uses extremely improper english making one wonder how she became a teacher.
The WORST professor I have ever had in CSU Stan. She doesn't care to help her students even when they are asking. She just teaches to teach. If you wanna fail, take her class because she is only looking out for her interest.
Oh leave Nhu Y alone! Nhu Y, you're awesome.
Flies through the lecture...test are really hard...just avoid her at all cost....take the guy instead
Seriously, what is this lady's problem? She hates teaching and I think she hates students. The worst teacher I've ever had.
worse teacher ever
She's very nice and a good teacher, but sometimes she goes a little to fast. Everyone says she's mean, but she's not. It's the class that's very hard and everyone just likes to blame her...it doesn't really matter who you take Ochem with-it's always going to be hard, both the Stessman's are awesome, so take it with whoever is available :D
She's useless. She got her ears pulled on for breaking school rules. All local chem dpts know of how useless she makes the CSUS dpt look. It's plain and simple, if you want to learn Chemistry, avoid her at all costs.
What the f? Completely useless. If you don't want to feel like an idiot, don't take classes with her. She's a sassy one.
Dr Stessman does not deserve all the bad comments that people post. Ochem is challenging in nature and requires time and effort. I think she is a great teacher. If you want to come to class, not read the book or do problems and pass, then this is not the class for you.
Cant understand what the f she is saying...way too fast. Her tests are nothing like the notes or examples!?! DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU DONT HAVE TO
She is a tough teacher and at times she does not make much sense if you are not too good at chemistry. She tried her best to make the class easier but, overall it was difficult. I would reccomend having plenty of time to study and take tutoring if you can for her class. STRESS LEVEL: EXTREMLY HIGH
Nyu is a good professor, she should not be blamed it's just the class is super hard. you have to pay attention in the class and if you are not serious don't take her class. you have to read and make sure to do all the assigned homework. A lot of her test questions are straight out of the book!!!! and go to office hours it will help!!!!!
Useless, waste of time, financial strain.....don't take her class.
She is very hard to understand and isn't always clear on what she is talking about
Had her for CHEM 1100 lab. Sometimes a little confusing with example problems and her accent is a little troublesome, but she knows what she's doing and will help you if you ask. In lab, she could seem slightly aloof, but if you go to office hours she's very nice and friendly. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!! It'll turn C's and D's to A's and B's.
You can't understand a word she is saying and when you ask her questions, it doesn't seem like she knows what she is talking about at all. Chemistry is not an enjoyable subject but it makes it even harder when your professor can't really help.
Dr. Stessman was enjoyable. She did many quirky little experiments and shared quite a few humorous anecdotes. Lectures weren't bad at all. Never opened the book - passed with a B. Rarely was there an assignment. Quizes and Tests were simple.
This teacher will make many mistakes and get mad at you for making them. Her accent is strange mix and very hard to understand
Dr. Stessman is an excellent biochemistry professor. She is very helpful and wants to help her students succeed. The class is definitely not easy and the people complaining about her just didn't try hard enough because a good grade an be pulled off. She is very funny and caring and I would recommend her as a professor to anyone.
drop the class... please do yourself a favor and dont take her. she is very hard to understand and doesnt not want to help you at all... i dont do this usually but students deserve to know about this teacher. I am an A student and it was hard to pass her class... she is not enjoyable at all and does not care... take the course at delta or a college
Hard to understand, gets mad if you ask too many questions, assumes you know most of what she is saying. If I have to hear "raw data" come from her mouth again....
I had her for lab. She will not help u she just gives u useless "hint" in other wrds telling u to figure it out urself. I got a B in her LAB but bcuz i would turn it in before so she can chek wat im doing wrong(had to figure it out myself tho) she has a lab practical(final exam) its harder than the labs. and Chem Lab is harder than LEC!..avoid her!
Dr. Stessman is great. chemistry is just a hard class if your not interested. im a biology major but i love Dr. Stessman. Shes sooooo cute & funny if you actually get to know her :D but i do recommend actually paying attention, showing up everyday and reading.
Helpfull, cares....does expect you too carry down from prior chem classes.
i think she is very disorganize.. she comes to class unprepared.. sometimes she ask the students to help her out and we don't know anything she was saying!?!?? very confusing at times! the course is easy that's why is was ok but if she teaches a harder class i wouldn't take it with her!
The material you learn is not hard, but just because she is really bad at explaining things, she confuses you more than necessary. If you want to pass her class you REALLY need to study a lot on your own. I recommend getting a tutor and going to the tutoring center as much as possible because she doesn't really help. She's not clear.
She is the on one who teaches this class, so you are stuck with her, get over it. She is not a great teacher; you will need to do all of the learning with a tutor and online KHAN academy, youtube etc. If you have an option look for another professor if not prpare yourself for a lot of frustration.
This class is very difficult. Best way to survive is to get a tutor!
She is a horrible teacher. She herself does not know the material so how is she expecting the class to learn it. Does not know how to teach. Grades harsh!
She comes to class without preparing any meterials and start lec by what students told her. She will make you feel stupid if you ask questions or comments. In lab, she comes in, give you quizzes and rest of them are all up to you. Do not complain directly to her cause she will get mad, and insult you. Very irresponsible, very inorganized.
She's not a very good teacher, but she's not the worst. She's very nice, and when you go in to her office hours and ask for help, she's more than willing to help out! But I studied a TON for that class and barely made a C
Shows up to class unprepared. Doesn't care. It's very difficult to understand what she is trying to say since she has a very heavy accent. She is rude.
She was not a good professor. She went over the material too quickly, and she never went over the exams we took. All we ever got back was the scantron...She was going over new material the day before our final. At least she curves.
Worse professor I have taken in my life..she is very unclear and rude..she rolls her eyes every time you ask a question and makes you feel stupid..Chemistry is hard but she makes it 20x harder..
Better off studying off text book, Great Person, Not so Great at Teaching, Definitely recommend reading and doing problems off book. Attending class is almost pointless. Tests are based off book and her practice Test Helps. Pretty much learn on your own basis.
Easily the worst class/professor I've ever had. Going to class is pointless. I honestly learned more from my tutor than I did from her all semester. I would recommend not taking her. She's a waste of tuition money. Oh and she will throw her PHD around to feel better about herself. She may be smart but teaching was definitely the wrong career choice
Dr. Stessman is extremely nice and caring. show up to class, actually put effort into chemistry, and you'll do fine. Most of these rude comments are probably people who never put in any work and expected an easy A. Anyway, put in the work, and Nhu-y will be fine (:
Everyone complains about her but they probably don't put the work into the class and get mad when they don't get a good grade. Just read the book and get help when you need it and you'll be fine. People just need to suck it up and get over it!
Don't listen to a lot of these lazy people that complain. Like any other college course, you're expected to be able to teach yourself the material. Nhuy is a great person but often just misunderstood by students who give little to no effort. You can never blame a teacher for your grades in college. Suck it up and get to work.
do u feel ur ready for the test ? ur really not. tests harder than usual. occasionally get unexpected questions, do all suggested problems and hope that she will put some on test
I am not lazy I do spend lots of hours to study, read book, do every single assigned homework problems, I understand concepts in every chapter but still can't pass her tests. Those tests ridiculous difficult. she covered the material pretty quick, very very hard grader. I study on YouTube and tutors more than from her. Such a nightmare. Stay away.
Honestly this was one of the worst experiences I've ever had at this school. Dr. Stessman is a nice person, but she is not a good professor. She's constantly making mistakes during her lectures and just seems so disorganized. The tests are just ludicrous and frustrating. Do yourself a huge favor and stay away from this professor.
Nhu Y is a very nice lady and fun to talk to! However you will get nothing out of her lectures. Goes really fast through the material, doesn't explain steps, and notes are ALL over the place. Must learn to study and teach oneself. Tests are still difficult even though some questions are copy and paste from back of book. Study hard my friends.
This class is hopeless. She is very confusing and tends to jump around places. There is no clarity in her examples and practically the whole class is confused. Exams are long and you have to rush to complete them which results in failing.
She just goes by her notes really fast and doesn't really explain well. Mostly its all going to be on you. I would definitely recommend getting a tutor for this class. Study the notes and read the book by yourself everyday and then you will be fine
The worst professor in CSU Stanislaus. I honestly do not understand why she is a professor or why honestly she became one. She gets confused in the middle of lecture and then confuses us. She talks fast and goes through the material carelessly. Please do not take her if your planning to take any chemistry course with her. She grades harshly
You are better off not going to her lectures and spend that hour reading the book and doing the practice problems, I mean she lectures directly from the book but the book explains it better in greater detail. She confuses herself often as well. Overall I would recommend taking this course with any other professor.
for already having taken a course similar to this, this was an extremely tough class. She's a nice person but not too great of a teacher. Talks too fast, strong accent, lectures aren't that great. You really need to read the textbook and do the problems on your own to pass(and sit in front of the class!). Only good thing is she curves grades
Lecture notes are straight from the book, practically word for word. But there are some sections that aren't on the test. She is extremely unclear and hard to understand what she is saying - mostly because of her accent. Sometimes confuses herself. Doesn't give enough time to complete in-class worksheets.
A tough teacher no doubt, but she did her best to make a tough subject easier. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS IF YOU NEED HELP! Only good will come from it. Do not fall behind early or it will be catch-up all semester. Four tests and about 10 worksheets due throughout class. Do a couple practice problems in each section as she uses some in tests! STUDY
This class was really tough. She goes too fast in her lectures and does not really explain well. I would recommend you read the book and take notes on your own. And make sure you do the problems at the end of the book. Some are on the test! And study every night! Don't procrastinate! The tests are super hard!
Study the txt book!
Sped through notes way too fast. Spoke too fast that it would be very confusing. Make sure to read your textbook! You're better off using the textbook rather than showing up to her class.
This class is so hard. Dr. Stessman is a very nice person but not a good teacher. The tests are very hard. You need to do all the suggested problems she gives you or else you will fail the tests.
Terrible experience. She does not understand the material herself and tries to teach it while making countless mistakes that students have to notice for her. Does not get the material but expects the students to understand every single item in the textbook. Hmmmm interesting!
We started off with 40 students and ended with about 7-10. She is not clear about what she is trying to teach and jumps all over the place. On top on not knowing how to teach her students she makes these long, hard tests that you do NOT have time to complete. I barely passed with a D and am currently retaking it. I suggest to not waste your time.
Doesn't make sense and doesn't really allow you to ask questions. If you do get to ask a question, you don't get a clear answer and often are more confused than when you started.
I respect Dr. Nhu-Y her a lot. She is a tough grader, and she does give tough tests, and she is a bit unclear most of the time, HOWEVER, she makes clear what she expects. She pushes her students because she knows they are capable of doing much more than just the minimum. I would really recommend her IF you are willing to put in the effort.
If you work 30-40 hrs DO NOT TAKE OCHEM PERIOD. This is one tough class overall especially with dr. Stessman. If you can't dedicate at least 2 hrs a day to this then dont take it. Anyone should pass since 55-74% is passing. Also 85% is an A. I worked 30 hrs so i wasnt able to put time into this. So dont make my mistake!! Its not hard to get a B!
Wait a semester and take another professor. If you simply want to pass with a C take her. Lectures are useless. During 2nd half of the semester she will go through a chapter in two days. You have to teach yourself. Regardless you have to work hard in Ochem, but it's 10x worse with a professor as incompetent as Dr. Stessman...
Expect to learn from the book more than lectures. ALWAYS BE AHEAD OF LECTURES OTHERWISE THE CLASS WILL BE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO PASS. LECTURES WILL STOP MAKING SENSE AS THE NOTES ARE NOT HELPFUL WITHOUT SOME PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OR EXPERIENCE.
This was a very tough class, and she did not make it any easier. She did offer extra credit which was very nice, but her tests are tough and she is not very good at explaining the material. She will help you if you go to her office hours. I am glad that it is over, do not take 5 courses and this, it requires a lot of time! that was my mistake!
STUDY STUDY! It's a difficult course, you need to put time and effort into it.
TERRIBLE. WORST CHEM TEACHER IVE EVER CAME ACROSS.I GOT LUCKY, I TOOK AP CHEM IN HIGH SCHOOL BUT I BARELY PASSED WITH A C
Very difficult to follow, material on tests are sometimes not cover in class, and is a hard grader
You can tell she's a good chemist and is very smart, the bad thing is she's a terrible professor. Her lectures are unorganized and she zooms through material. Doesn't pay attention if any students have a question. I'm sure if you went to office hours she'd be more helpful one-on-one, but for the most part, you'll have to teach yourself chemistry.
Mrs. Stessman is very unclear about her "lectures." She confuses herself and says one thing and later will change her mind and literally email the whole class about her "mistake" after she rudely crossed yelled at everyone for not knowing how to read a graduated cylinder after she realized hours later her mistake. She makes 0 sense.
I worked so hard in this class.I spent so much of my time working on the labs trying to understand the material but nothing helped. I also went to her office hours a few times, but she still did not explain the material clear enough. She is not a good lab professor/teacher at all. Good luck to her future students because they will need it to pass.
Dr. Stessman is a really nice professor that cares about her students that are committed to learning from her class and show that they are doing the work. She gives extra-credit assignments, and they are not hard. Practice makes perfect in her class.
She was my chemistry lab professor. Very unclear with her grading and will dock down points just because she doesn't understand what she has assigned us in the lab. Gets her labs off the internet and doesn't know what she assigns the class. DO go to her office hours if confused about anything. Watch your grade bc she makes ALOT of grading mistakes.
It is obvious that Dr. Stessman knows Organic Chemistry well but she seems to have a hard time teaching it. I would leave lectures with no better understanding of the material than I had going in. She is also a very strict grader and many of her exam questions are in a different format than what she lectures on.
Often comes up with practice problems for lecture on the fly. Not a great idea for her. Often makes mistakes, erases and tries to re-explain. It would be greatly beneficial for her to rehearse lectures and material. However, she is nice, caring and easy to talk to.
Not sure if I would consider her caring or helpful to her students. Her class was so hard because she does not allow time for questions or clarification. She goes overtime when class is over and expects us to understand the material when she constantly makes mistakes. Told me I didn't deserve to be in her class if I was failing. Rude and unhelpful.
I was taking this class as a GE class to get the Science portion out of the way. I would not recommend taking this professor. Professor Stessman is difficult to understand, and there is so much that students have to do for the class. She is very strict with what she wants her students to do and will kick a student out if work isn't done beforehand.
Dr. Nhu-y stessman is absolutely amazing as a person. She has a kind heart and lots of great stories. On the contrary, she also is very disorganized in her lectures and does not slow down to break down difficult concepts. 10/10 person, but a lower rate as a professor. If you learn well on your own, you'll pass!
Dr. Nhu-y stessman is absolutely amazing as a person. She has a kind heart and lots of great stories. On the contrary, she also is very disorganized in her lectures and does not slow down to break down difficult concepts. 10/10 personality, but a lower rate as a professor. If you learn well on your own, you'll pass!
She is a very unorganized professor. She often messes up questions herself, erases it and tries to reexplain after confusing us. Save yourself and take it with another professor. She is a nice person though, just not a good professor at all. Extremely difficult class in general... but with her it seems impossible.
Exams were unlike what was discussed in lecture, on old practice exams, or in the homework. I would prepare to do a problem one way, only to have something I wasn't taught to do on the exam. Also, the other section has a C at 55%; in this class, it is 65. Save yourself the stress and take the other professor.
Her exams were really easy.
I was hesitant at first to take Nhu Y because of her reviews but I ended up enjoying her lecture. The class is difficult but it is do-able as long as you keep up with the homework and the lectures. The tests are also difficult so if you find that your test scores are going down, change your study methods
Dr. Nhu is an amazing human being who truly wants to see her students pass. However, this class requires immense amount of time and effort. I would go to her office hours 2-3 times a week. Her material on her tests are straight from her lectures. Many people dont like her but they tend to blame the difficulty of the class on the professor.
I like this professor. She is very available outside of class. She is hard to understand but its not impossible to decipher what she is saying. She is not easily offended so asking her to clarify is always an option. she is blunt and sarcastic. She does make many mistakes so read the chapter before class!! Do ALL practice problems.
If you have a hard time with the sciences, do not take her class. She's a nice individual, but the way she teaches is not for everyone and I ended up teaching myself. If in class, she tries to keep you after time to finish worksheets with group mates. Remote teaching didn't make a difference bc as I said, I pretty much taught myself.
Very nice person. As a prof, definitely not a good one. Lectures and homework are nothing like exams. The only good thing is the exams are not weighed so heavy like in other classes. Fast lectures, talker, and writer. Difficult material if you struggle with science. Out of all profs I've had, this one ranks in my top two lowest. She is nice though
Dr. Stessman is a super nice lady but online labs are tedious to understand. Pre lab lecture she goes over the lab procedure and gives you the equations on how to solve for the lab. She responds pretty quick to emails and breaks everything down for you in her office hours if you need help. If you make time with her shell gladly help you :)
Worst Professor EVER! I usually never complain about professors, but this one is did it for me. Made me feel like the dumbest person alive! She gives us practice problems and other irrelevant material that doesn't cover the exam, she should at least throw in some multiple choice if she's gonna do this. She is not designed to teach this hard class.
Lab reports are due one day after lab, so you must really get on it. When labs are not due one day after labs, I highly recommend attending office hours and asking for help, even ask her to check your lab report before submission. Show her you are willing to put in the work, and she'll gladly give an A for your lab report.
5 timed Exams (50 mins) + cumulative Final. Exams are HARD, but she gave you points for your work. DO YOUR HW,or you won't pass. This class is one of the toughest class I have had so far, and Dr. Stessman is not a great teacher either as our class did not cover two chapters. Be prepared to teach yourself, or you wont pass.
She was an okay prof, chem isn't my thing and she'd make the lectures hard to follow and go back and forth a lot. I didn't enjoy her or the class, the exam format wasn't the best but I understand why it is the way it is, she has them timed which just gives me anxiety, like I said she's okay, it just wasn't for me.
I do NOT recommend her at all. She keeps the grades locked so you don't even know how you are doing during the entire course. If you follow her guidelines on her assignments, she will knock off points if it is not at her liking. She makes it very unfair for all of her students to pass with an A. She should not be teaching this course.
The most unorganized professor at CSU. Maybe knows ochem but not able to teach at all. Be prepared to teach yourself. Grades unfairly. Total 5 exams plus final and have only 50 minutes. Questions on exam not even covered once in lecture. Her lectures not helpful at all. Doesn’t care if you learn at all. YouTube is better and highly recommended!
terrible!!!! DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!! she has no idea about how to teach. her exams are so hard. If you go to her office hours and ask her the exam questions , she wont be able to give you the right answers loll
She said she only teaches this course because the university made her. She is used to teaching students that already have a solid chemistry background and is unable to give you one herself. With a mask and strong accent good luck understanding her. It says she is the professor, but you will end up teaching yourself. Doesn't email back consistently.
It is labeled as Chemicals in your Life but the only application to life were in 3 assignments. Her lectures were very long and not cohesive. I ended up having to get a tutor to finish the class. She talks quickly and often just solves the problem without explaining where she got the information from.
Mrs. Stessman covers topics as if you are already aware of them. Be prepared to teach yourself the entire semester. She grades very harshly for stuff she doesnt not clearly cover.
Literally do not take her because she teaches and acts as if you already know what she's talking about. I took her and it was a mistake dont take her if you actually want to pass chem. The exam avergae was also low in the 30s or 40s and she still didnt curve them.
really good
The lectures are very fast pace and a bit all over the place. She does not take attendance but I would recommend attending all lectures to get the information needed for exams. The exams aren't too long or hard if you studying a ton. Be ready to study a lot and reteach yourself before exams. Not a horrible class but not great.
Don't take this professor because this class is solely determined by exams which are extremely difficult. The exams are not based on what you learn or the lectures as the question in the quiz seem like they are from stuff we have not learned. They are difficult for no reason.
Took the online course for Chemicals in Your Life. This was during the winter. A lot gets covered in three weeks, but it was manageable. Watch lectures, complete worksheets and MyLab online homework. You get most of your points from assignments. I got a 60% on two of the three exams and still got a B. Recommend taking online course than in person.
Lab was a mess with this professor it's honestly a miracle that I passed. If you see her name on the schedule for a class you need DO NOT TAKE IT!!!! Doesn't know how to teach and should stick to research.
Worst professor I have had so far at Stan. Be ready to teach yourself everything. She forgets things or says information wrong, gets annoyed when students don't understand material or have questions, and can be rude/condescending. If you need to take this course, I strongly recommend waiting until you can enroll with another professor
Would not take again. Went from getting an A in ochem1 with another professor to getting a grade I'd rather not say with her for ochem2. Got annoyed when students were confused and left labs unsupervised. Doesn't curve exams or round grades up. Students had to rely on teaching themselves since sometimes she didn't even know what chapter we were on.
The concepts by themselves are difficult, and the professor doesn't do a good job of clarifying them. When I took the class, she explicitly said she didn't care if she failed all of us. She doesn't go over the concepts enough or provide examples. Difficult to tell what will be on the exam. There are other professors who teach this class better.
Not the best chem lecture. I taught myself the whole semester. The first 2 exams barely covered anything we learned about in class. Attendance is optional but you can't get notes any other way unless you ask classmates. Quizzes on each chapter every Friday, you can use notes.
Dfficlt2understandduetoaccent.Readtxtbk,dohw&txtbk prctice prblms. Offers ex crdt on tests. Gave ex cred stdy gude 4 test, very similar to test. Qzs can be taken w/ partner & OPEN BOOK. Tests r hard. Hints: smetms she gives info in ques unnecessary for answer. Keeps tests so schdule appt to review probs missed. Same questions WILL appear on final.
This class is no walk in the park. The lectures move quickly, and the exams are challenging. But with focused studying, including using resources like unstuck study, you can do well. Just be ready to put in the work.
Dr. Stessman is a very nice professor but lacks the skills to properly convey the material due to being unorganized and unclear on a variety of subjects. Class is test heavy and the lectures hardly touch the topics on the exams (which is 70% of your grade). I managed to pass this class by teaching myself and using the book, offers extra credit.
Class was very hard. I took biochem for nursing and another UD Chem course prior and Got A's in them. But taking this course was not what I expected. I did soo much studying for this course and most of the questions I reviewed didn't even appear on the exam. Dr. Stessman is a really nice professor but she just is hard to understand in lectures.
Half of your grade comes from three tough exams, with the class average typically around 35-50% Hard to follow her lectures without prior Chemistry knowledge. To pass, study hard, and visit her office for help. Extra credit is available, plus weekly review sessions. 10% of your grade is for attending two seminars.
She is not there to help you. I emailed her multiple times throughout the semester and only ever received one email back at the very end when I was asking about my grade. The average for most of the exams was around a 40. I asked her a question on one of the quizzes and she said “good luck” and walked away.
In lecture you're either trying to keep up with her extremely fast lecture speed or trying to comprehend the concepts, trust me you can't reliably do both. Lecture provides little to no help with expected material on exams so you're better off watching Youtube videos the whole semester. Convinced the final requires witchcraft to pass.
Took this class during the Winter 2025. Watch the lecture videos, do your guided questions from the lecture, practice with the worksheet and pearson, 3 exams, 3 chems. in your life assignments. Did the two week trial on pearson and finished homework early so I did not have to pay for access or the book. Just do the work and you will do fine
The lectures can be a little confusing, so be prepared to study a lot. Offers some extra credit and you get to work with a partner on the quizzes. The exams are tough but she gives a lot of partial credit. Attendance is not mandatory, but really recommend going to all lectures.
Do not take her class. She expects you to know the lecture already. Exam are very hard. Her notes are in paper and she writes so fast that sometimes you won't be able to keep up. Honestly wouldn't recommend her at all.
She does not use any presentation slides for her lectures, all her notes are on a notepad. She gets lost in her own notes and she writes quickly. She does give out extra credit for the exams and you have to pay for your homework using smartwork. You have to reteach the lessons to yourself in order to grasp it. Helpful during office hours.
This class is hard. I received an A BUT I had to put many hours and tutoring behind it. I recommend going to SI sessions since the professor tends to jump around a lot which makes it really confusing. She provides extra credit for each test. practice, practice, practice.
Avoid at all cost, she's a mess and doesn't understand what's she's teaching herself. She was rude and made me feel like a bother to ask questions. She once walked away while I was in the middle of speaking to her.
