Really hard to stay awake in this class, has a tendency to ramble on off topic causing him to fall behind. Politics could be so much more interesting, the readings were torture to get through and normally I love this kind of stuff. Nice guy though

funny prof... gives exam outline with the questions pretty much on them... loses track sometimes but it's funny... readings were just hard to get by.

The most fascinating professor I have had thus far in my university career. Very easy to talk to and extremely helpful. Will do everything possible to ensure students understand the topics and know what to expect on the exam. Also a very engaging professor, in that he encourages input and discussion

One of the best profs @ Mac! Intellectual, interesting and just plain incredible! Great guy who's always dressed to the T, and love the accent! Has a great passion for politics, which shows in his lectures. Will help you in any way possible. Can't wait to take his next class!

one of the most fascinating instructors ever to grace mcmaster. this guy knows all there is to know about south america; his accent is enjoyable and his sense of humour is refreshing, but the marking/reading can be a bit much. a spiffy dresser too. highly recommended.
He's a very entertaining lecturer. I doubt I would like this class so much if it wasn't for him! Definately one of Mac's best!

I transferred to Mac last year after two years at Trent. At first, I hated Mac. But thanks to Dr. Galleguillos, I'm now happy here.

At first you dont like him. But after you get used to him hes amazing! I love this guy, took the GO bus home with him almost everyday too.. helps you out if you make the effort to talk with him. Smartest man ever.. Makes fun of stupid people too.. love him for that :)
He's great - makes fun of us outwardly, makes jokes without realising it, and is simply adorable! Reminded me of my grandfather. Plus he's had a crazy life! Ask him about it - he was on the run from the government in Chile for being a human rights lawyer...he lived in church basements and had to flee the country!

I took the class coz the subject was interesting and he had good ratings; don't always trust those. I found him very dry, hard to follow and can honestly say I learnt very little. He seems like a great guy and very interesting to talk to, but classes sucked and so did my tutorials.

Students either love him or hate him. I love him - I think he's one of the coolest people I've ever met. His stories are insane. He can be frustrating as a professor and he has high expectations, but go to his office hours and he'll give you great direction.
Great speaker, he keeps you awake, lots to learn, and a great prof overall. Makes little use of the textbook.

Took two classes with him and worked on a thesis he supervised. Fiercely intelligent. Sometimes frustrating to get at a hold of, but extremely helpful. Won't hold your hand though, but let you know how to do things yourself. Overall, the most inspirational prof I had at MAC over 4 years
Seems like a nice guy, but I don't think he's a good prof. He is all over the place/often off topic. Never uses the expensive course materials. I don't mean this in a bad way, but I rarely understand him through his thick accent. Fell asleep many times in that class.
Hard to understand with his accent at times, really disorganized (lost my and 3 others essay, he did apologize though), jumped around topics a lot, and had some tough requirements for his course. He was really biased too, anti-US view.. disappointing. Overall subpar prof I'd say, you like him or you don't. 40/100

Anti-US? I think you have him all wrong. If you speak to him in person (which anyone with half a brain would because he has so much knowledge to share with you and will) then you'd realize that many of the things he says in class are not neccessarily what he believes- for 2xx3 he was giving you the point of view of the third world. AMAZING prof!

Expectations very high and little explanation given with criticism. Hard to understand sometimes (the accent), little use of the textbook, and goes off topic all the time. Used to be a lawyer, so he will expect some sort of law related topic in your essay. Tutorials not helpful at all.
A nice guy, but doesn't give clear expectations of assignments (ie. "Write an essay on a topic of your choosing, 15 pages max.") If you ask for help, he will say "Check syllabus". Classes are kind of pointless, you could skip an entire month and not be far behind. He is friendly - but I don't feel like I come out of his classes having learned much
Loves to talk about himself. That's okay, because he has led an interesting life. But most of the 50 minute lectures are about his life, and you don't end up learning anything.
Professor Galleguillos.. the best way to describe is that you fear him, but love him. He appears intimidating, but he is incredible. He supervised me for my thesis. I have learned more from this man than anyone else. Intelligent students will appreciate him. The stupid ones wont because they are not at his level of intelligence. AMAZING prof
The best professor in Mac Poli Sci. My first course with him, I walked out with a headache every time. The man actually made sense of the world (politics) around you. Although I am a conservative, and he is VERY far left, his lectures have taught me more about politics/societies than both my degrees combined.
Fantastic Teacher He knows a lot about development and politics of the third world and transits both knowledge and passion onto the student through personal tie ins to history. Please dont get put off by an accent (only normal for a Chilean to have one!)

This is my 3rd class with Dr. Galleguillos. He is one of the most open-minded, caring and passionate professors I have ever met. To be honest, the very first class I took with him was POLSCI 2XX3, and it took me some time to get used to his teaching style - but after, I became hooked. If you're a polsci student, give him a try. You won't regret it!
Poor feedback given on assignments and tests, unhelpful in person as he just winds up talking about himself or some other tangent. I wanted to like this class but I think they really screwed him over by making it one semester instead of a full term course. Information was rushed and expectations were too high for what we had learned in class.
avoid this professor at all costs - hard to understand and offers no breaks in 3-hour lectures. He also rambles a lot & although he is very wise, he expects students to teach other students
His lectures make no sense and there's hardly any overlap between them and the assigned readings.
This man is a terrible teacher. I do not know why some students have given him good reviews! You cannot understand a single word in his lectures and is constantly rambling on whatever he likes. None of his lecturings is correlated to the textbook; this course is all about independent readings and no learning. Please avoid him to not waste your $.

He's fine to take a class from him. You really need to work for it, but it's manageable. However, NEVER work with him on a research project/MRP/thesis. It was traumatic. He was unprofessional, not clear about expectations, never responds, no feedback and doesn't believe in mental health/SAS accommodations. Tread with caution.
Never helps. Never replies to emails. It is as if he wants his students to do bad. You can genuinly tell hes there to just lecture and not actually teach or watch his students succeed. If you take his class especially without a TA good luck. He is never ever willing to take a minute and help.
This professor is really hard to understand. He expects assignments to be precise but his outlines are far from being precise. He is the least flexible profs and just constantly piles work on students and his teaching assistant. Taking this class with him was a mistake.
One of the worst profs I have ever had. His lectures are unclear. He does not lecture about the readings but expects you to have an intimate understanding of every reading. He intentionally scheduled his exam on a holiday. He is unfamiliar with his own syllabus and is unresponsive to emails, even during the pandemicalso a hard marker.
Not enough space to emphasize how bad of a prof he is - Aimlessly rambled thru each lecture, never truly taught anything - Relished the failure of his students - Did not know his own syllabus - Held back progress; never clarified how far we were supposed to be - Only got 1/2 thru course readings & lectures; despite this, the exam was on ALL content
Definitely one of the hardest classes I have taken. Everyone is complaining about how hard it was to understand him but really it is not. He does have an accent but that does not impact the quality of his teaching. Had this been a professor with a French accent people would have adored his accent. Overall the course material is really interesting.
Wow. This guy is literally the worst professor I have had to date. He is almost impossible to understand, does not follow his OWN course syllabus, records but does not upload his weekly lectures, and does not even remotely communicate with any of his teaching assistants. Save yourself the migraine and don't take any of his classes.
It took me awhile to warm up to Dr. Galleguillos but he's honestly one of my favourite professors now. Yes, his accent may be a little tricky to understand at points and he does ramble at times, but he has so much real life experience to learn from and I have come to respect him very much.
Dr. Galleguillos can be the greatest professor, it depends on how much you care about his class. If you show you care and reach out, he is PHENOMENAL and insanely smart, he cares so much about the students who show a lot of effort. He is very helpful with essays If you book a meeting with him, I promise you he will help you organize your paper.
Don't let the other reviews fool you, Dr Galleguillos' lectures can be tough to follow sometimes but this course was so refreshing after 4 years of being taught essentially the same concepts and authors every single term. He clearly has high expectations for his students but never in a condescending way. Wish I had taken more classes with him!
Dr. Galleguillos isn't everyones cup of tea, but he's one of the best professors at McMaster. He assigns a lot of readings but he is without a doubt an expert in his field and has so much to offer as a professor. If you go to class regularly then you'll love him and do great, if you don't then I wouldn't take one of his courses.
Extremely difficult to understand, constantly contradicting himself and his syllabus. Kept saying to refer to the syllabus when asked for clarification about the syllabus. Expects you to know everything about the topic and he doesn't realize that he has to teach. No clear marking scheme and uses any excuse to be a tough marker. Avoid if you can!!
Professor Galleguillos is a really nice professor who wants the best for those who are engaged in the course. Lectures are spoken word, no powerpoints. He is very knowledgeable about the topics he teaches, with personal anecdotes thrown into teaching. Everything was marked in quick fashion and assignments are manageable but difficult for level 3.
Overall Dr. Galleguillos knows what he's talking about. However, the way he runs his lectures are insane. He just talks..... no structure or lecture slides to follow. His assignment instructions are so restrictive and he expects everything done his way. He purposely schedules exams on Holidays too. Great way to convince students to with-drawl.
3Y03 was easily one of the hardest classes I've taken at Mac. Professor Galleguillos is a very tough grader (nothing seems good enough for him) and his expectations are almost impossible to meet or surpass. Lectures are very hard to follow, and material is hard to comprehend. Unless a course with Professor Galleguillos is mandatory, don't take it!
My only advice is that you should go to class and show him that you are trying your best, your efforts won't go unnoticed by him. His teaching style may be a bit unconventional, but you always learn something new and insightful based on course content or just his personal experiences.
Professor Galleguillos has a very structured way of lecturing and genuinely cares about his students. He encourages asking questions when things are unclear and I promise that as long as you put in the effort, attend lectures, you are set. He gives clear grading criteria and great feedback, notices efforts and is an inspirational teacher figure.
Extremely tough grader where nothing is good enough. He's a fun professor, but when it comes to grading he marks almost religiously with no clear grading scheme. He expects extreme levels of quality and referencing to course content, but sometimes little exists in his lectures for a certain topic, but somehow he still expects absolute perfection.
POLSCI 3Y03 with Prof. Galleguillos in Winter 2024 lacked organization and clarity. Lectures were unengaging, with unclear grading criteria. Assignments were marred by confusing guidelines. Using email for submissions caused disorganization, leading to missed grades.

I wouldn't recommend this class. Dr. Galleguillos's teaching style can be disorganized, making it hard to follow along effectively. His grading is also very strict, which adds to the challenge. Overall, I found the experience frustrating and not worth the effort.
He teaches the course content in a very unclear manner. He lacks clarity when discussing a topic and deviates from it frequently. He does not properly teach the content listed in the syllabus guidelines nor fully complete it towards the end of the semester.
He ask for way too many extra things when it comes to assignments, that are very much not needed and honestly just annoying. His lectures are okay, nothing special nor exciting. He kinda just talks.

Prof. Galleguillos was a very interesting professor. The lectures had moments of additional insight from Prof. Galleguillos, much of the material bordered on meandering. Paired with a dense textbook and heavy essay-based work, I would not recommend 2XX3 to students with demanding course loads, or those with little knowledge of Global Politics.
Please consider carefully before enrolling this professor's courses. He is unprofessional, does not adhere to course guidelines, and fails to provide a clear understanding of the content.

won't provide you rubrics, often won't respond to e-mails, just talks at students for hours with no regard for engagement, extremely unprofessional and can be unnecessarily rude. an uphill battle, save yourself the stress
Lectures can sometimes be a little challenging to follow, however he is definitely an expert in his field and loves when students participate.
Dr. Nibaldo Gallegillos will only respond to emails if you start off with his full name, is a tough grader on essays that would easily get you 80%+, and is too old to figure out the modern era of teaching. He doesn't know tech, is lecture heavy, and is not very helpful, but can be understanding
Very nice guy and generally has a good understanding of course content. Homie needs to retire at this point, the way he teaches lectures and how late his marking is on exams is damn near atrocious. I still haven't received my midterm marks a month and a half later. Good dude, just teaching and marking is horrid.
