If you want to take political science this semester, take her class, she makes politics fun and exciting. She is very approachable and friendly to students.
Super awesome teacher. She makes you care about government. She is not opinionated and presents the information in an unbiased manner. Excellent if you really want to learn about government.
Nice teacher, very interesting and easy to understand. Requires you to do community service and volunteer somewhere, but if you don't mind that then i would definately recommend her. Lots of extra credit opportunities.

Very nice teacher, pretty easy class, must read and take notes to pass.
awsome! she is very passionate in her teaching styles. i fully reccomend her to anyone who wants or needs to take this class!
She holds my interest well, keeps things moving, mixes up the methods of teaching nicely
Easy MC tests with opportunity for EC during review. She basically tells you EXACTLY what you need to know. But lectures were actually informative as well. Group discussions could be slow but I had a interesting cast of people in my class which made it fun. There is some busy work though. Mostly EZ
She's nice but unfortuantely we had to do a group project and if someone didnt do their part we left their name off of the project. well this girl didnt do her part and i got mad at her. so to get back at me she left my name off and gutierrez wouldn't believe me or my other group members so i failed
She's pretty knowledgable in what she teahes about. Her projects are kind of dumb, but are worth it if you complete them. She made us log 20 hours of volunteer work with a paragraph for each hour. That sucked pretty bad. She allowed the final to have one full page front and back full of notes. Nice.
She was the best teacher I have ever had! Her projects are easy to get good grades on which helps you if you dont do well on the tests. And the group discussions are fun and easy to get 100% on. She goes out of her way to help people. We need more teachers like her!
She was a pretty good teacher, but there was just too much information for me to handle! I really liked the volunteer project that she had us do, i am still volunteering today!
Unfortunately, she has the class do group discussions every couple of weeks. She hardly ever corrects anyone when they're wrong about something and she very rarely gives the discussion any kind of direction. So basically, you hear the students giving strong opinions on topics they know absolutely nothing about. The lectures are pretty good, though.
sweetheart! loves to teach this topic, you can tell, lectures are a little long and tedious but arent all classes? projects, extra credit, and discussions boost your grade like no other! tests are soooo easy, just take notes and thats it! go to class! shes awesome
Actually teaches about poli scie, dont really need to buy book, tests kind of hard but mainly vocab so not too bad, 20 hrs community service required so that was annoyin but you have a good amount of time to do it, she does extra credit but not much, and she's def a feminist liberal or something like that overall she's not that bad though
She is the best teacher i have had in a long time. Although her tests are on the hard side if you go to class and take good notes just read your notes and youll do fine.
Very eager to teach, great followup, very clear, practiced lectures. She can answer questions on a wide range. Loved every bit of the class, except for the forced discussions - depressing to hear classmates "talk to get a grade" and not come prepared. Hard tests, hard subject, I'm stronger for it.
I absolutely loved this class. She's very clear on her lectures, i hardly ever get lost. Her projects were easy but long. Didn't like the forced discussions too much, but sometimes its funny ot hear people argue about pointless off-topics topics. But definitly id recommned her!!
Nichola is a great teacher. She's passionate and educated. She increased my prior non-existent interest in Political Science. The class also allowed me to consider my career options and opened up some possible paths for me. I have recently looked into law school. I have a better understanding of government. The class was fun and competitive! Take h
i really enjoyed her lectures...the class discussions were interesting because it showed the true colors of students...tests easy mostly vocab.. make sure you do the project or there goes your grade...
Very interesting and easy teacher. No homework, and multiple choice tests. She keeps the classes and lectures interesting by involving the students. Definatly would reccomend her.
Nicola is a GREAT teacher! She is very enthusiastic and definitely loves government. I really didn't want to take this class, but she made it fun and interesting. I was actually very surprised to do so well in it. Especially since I was the only "older" person in the class.
MS. Gutierrez is an amazing teacher. She is very passionate about what she teaches and makes things very clear to help you understand. Multiple choice tests, lots of notes so try not to miss a class or at least copy from a friend. Extra credit offered and several out of class projects (not hard). She's great!!!
Great Teacher!! Makes political science interesting. Participate in the discussions. Class before the exam is for review. Tests are pretty easy and she actually reads the test questions for the review. Make sure you turn off your cell phone because if it rings she kicks you out. Overall awesome class and great teacher! Recommend!
Great teacher! I dreaded taking Poli Sci but she was awesome. I was twice the age of the the rest of the students and we had to work together but it was very rewarding. This is a class where involvement is mandatory. Her tests were fair but you need to study.
Professor Gutierrez is amazing! I took the class as a requirement, but her class was so interesting and she was so awesome at helping the class to understand the material that it is now my major. She isn't easy, but she is a great teacher, and if u go to class and do the work, u will do great. She genuinely wants her students to do well.
I was NOT excited to take this class BUT...she made it interesting. She is an AMAZING teacher. If you don't want to do community service, don't take her, BUT it's a great way to boost your grade. I can't imagine a better PoliSci teacher. She made it sooo interesting! I recommend her and it's not even close to my major!
Political science with Ms. G was a pleasure. Underneath her "young professional" exterior this is one righteous and intellegent woman. She is all about empowering her classes with knowledge and her lectures are crystal clear, informative and all you need to get an A on tests. She was a good sport when it came to our often heated class discussions.
Mrs. Gutierrez is an amazing teacher! i have no interest in politics whatsoever but she made the curriculum easy to understand and interesting to learn. I really enjoyed her class and highly recommend that others take it. She's great!!
all information is very straightforward, easy to understand and easy to study for. she is a very good teacher and very enthusiastic about political science.
She's a smart cookie. knows polotics but ocasionally knocks poloticians she doen't like but thats ok.
I appreciated how well the subject was covered. I feel like I really have a good understanding about the function and make-up of the government. I really liked Mrs. Gutierrez. She gives you all the tools to get a good grade. This is a marginally time consuming class, having factored in the 20 hours of volunteer work you have to do for this class.
Great teacher! A lot of note taking, but explains everything clearly. She gives a review for the exam the day before and grades essays fairly. She is a very nice teacher and knows her stuff.
Great teacher. Her lectures are very clear and interesting. The test is multiple choice and come straight from her notes. The only part i didn't like was the group discussions. Very thing else was easy.
this woman is the best female teacher i've had so far. I've transferred from WVC and wish sh'es teaching at my current school. She is knowledgeable, very well-spoken and interesting.
She is one of my favorite teachers before this class I hated politics and now I actually like it and enjoy her class. She is interesting and funny. She is tough but so far I've gotten an A on EVERYTHING! she is great you must take her!
This woman is EXTREMELY SMART! She knows her stuff and knows what she's talking about! ITs quite intresting and she reviews for every test. Dont take this course if you dont want to do 20hrs of community service, but its free points so no big deal. She has some intresting sermons and .. shes just great!
Intelligent woman with a good sense of humor, makes the class fun. The only thing that I disliked was involvement with gov't, you have to spend a # of hours watching for example the city council conduct their business, and write about it. Overall best class I ever took, it seemed almost too short!
she was awsooooome i took her summer class and was very easy test Q r strait from notes she was very clear has a good sense of humor and if take during summer u do not have to do hrs of community service do the news journal and project and u should do fine if ur lazy or have no interest in gov don't take and she also looks like Reese Witherspoon
If you want to mess up your grand pont average, then take this teacher. Do not waste your time in her class... Your hard work is not apreciated in her class!
Ahh Ms.Guitierrez has to be one of the B E S T teachers I've had. Shes great, funny, smart and always wears cute shoes!! All her tests come from the notes you take in class and you do reviews where she gives you direct questions from the tests. She really makes the subject interesting. I LOVED THIS TEACHER!!
Nichola is a skilled professor with a real passion for her subject; she makes a somewhat dry subject compelling and relevant to her students' lives. This class is by no means easy, and several large assignments are given, but they are simple (though time consuming) to complete. Tests are multiple-choice and not difficult at all. Loved this class!
BEST POLY SCI TEACHER AT WVC. Very informed and had no bias, very open to new ideas. Yes there were projects and papers and tests, but its worth it! If you put forth the effort you will succeeded. Tests are multiple choice and you are allowed a cheat sheet for the final :]
Great teacher
I absolutely love this woman! Her lectures were fascinating and I found the class to be very enjoyable. You have interesting discussions and learn about things you always wanted to know! Only thing that is a little lame is 20 hours of community service. TAKE THIS CLASS if you work hard and show you care you will get an easy A
She is the best. She is amazing she actually loves teaching. And it is also a fun class to take
Show up, take notes, go over them for an hour before the test. Easy A. This course requires 20 hours of community service though.
Amazing. I totally love her. She is nice, loves to teach, and gets totally excited about the stuff she teaches. Great class. Study your class notes and the exams will be easy. 20 hours of community service. But her class is fun and interesting.
She is so funny, I liked coming to class, her lectures were really inspiring and class discussions were really interesting. Tests were fair, 20 hours of com. service. I would recommend her.
If you go to class, participate, take notes and do the assignments you will earn an easy "A" and learn about Political Science.
I loved her!!! great teacher, just go to class, and STUDY!
Great instructor. Makes you feel part of the class. Tests are HARD an I never got above a D. I had a final grade of an B some how!!! Learned a lot!!! Recommend to anyone!!!!
If you want to learn about Political Science and the workings of our government. This is your class! Ms. Guiterrez has passion for Poli Sci and you feel her energy and spirit when listening to her lectures. She is well organized, well read and has a great sense of humor!
Ms. Gutierrez is an amazing teacher. She is very passionate about what she teaches and gets her students excited as well. Her class isn't hard, and the tests are okay if you show up for lectures and pay attention. I feel very grateful that I had her as a teacher.
If you need to take Government take Gutierrez! She makes the subject interesting! Lectures are fun and informative, you have group discussions on reading which are fun, and extra credit opportunities prior to tests. This class is an easy A if you actually try. Nichola is my favorite teacher at West valley! TAKE HER!
I took Honors poli sci 001. Gutierrez is an awkward individual outside of class. Good lecturer. She writes all the notes on the board and you copy them down. Tests are straight from the notes you write down. Textbook is pointless.20 hours community service and write a paper on a policy. 1 group project/presentation. Discussions were so intimidating
This teacher is the**** and she knows her****! Never missed a class. I hated politics and knew nothing but I now know more than ever. If I can take her for another class in the future, I will. Love her! Take her if you want to learn and get the most for your money/units!
Mrs. Gutierrez is an extremely passionate teacher and she keeps her class interesting. Basically every day you go to class and copy down the notes she writes on the board. If you memorize the notes for the test, you will get an A. She's a very easy grader on projects. She offers extra credit. I definitely recommend her as a teacher.
I did like this teacher and her class and probably would have gotten an A, but I didn't have the time to commit to 20 hours of community service, which is mandatory to get a good grade in her class. So I unfortunately had to drop the class. Just wanted others to know about this before they sign up for her class.
great teacher!
She knows the government in simple language for anyone to understand, and she will back up both sides of a political statement. The graded discussions were only awkward the first time. The community service is definately needed to pass, and she offers a lot of extra credit. I was suprised to be interested in the government after taking poli sci 1!
A great teacher!! she is awesome with notes, and always keep you notified on upcoming assignments, and she offers several opportunities for extra credit. TAKE HER CLASS YOU WILL ENJOY IT
Guitierrez was extremely passionate about political science. She gets you excited about what she's talking about. Her tests were easy and everything is from her notes so as long as you take good notes the class will be easy.
She is a very good teacher. She gets what's important and you learn a lot. It's true, 20 hours of community service is required, but it opened my eyes to my community and it's needs. It was worth it.This class had nothing to do with my major, but everything to do with the importance of being an informed citizen in this country
Teacher made class interesting. Make sure you memorize the notes for tests. Need to complete the volunteer hours & group project in order to pass class. Takes alot of outside hours to complete work. Try to share the graded discussion book; too expensive to use only 4 times.
Memorize lecture notes, pay attention in class, and you'll do good on test. She is very passionate so not too hard to pay attention. Don't need txt book. Don't really need Choices book either. Just raise your hand during discussion and B.S. an opinion. Liked her a lot. Fun class and you can use a page of notes for the final so very reasonable
Took her summer course (4 weeks) so it was a lot of work crammed into short period. Keep media journal, book report, class poll project, 3 tests (lowest score dropped), one cumulative final. She gives you jeopardy quiz before test and gives you about 25 questions that will be on test!! She explains things easily so you WILL understand. i got an A!
Amazing.. i didn't know anything about poli schi and i learned so much in just for week.s i also took it this summer like the other person under me and it was very easy.. i have a full time job and i work at night and i class in the morning and she was so interesting that although i was so to tired i never dozed off.SHe grades hard on writing thoug
I think it's safe to say Gutierrez is the best teacher I've ever had. She is so passionate about the subject. I came in thinking she was going to be mean and the class dull, but total opposite!!! She's got me contemplating a poli-sci major now. :)
she is the type of teacher that can make you forget you are in a classroom
Wonderful instructor! I took her in the summer, she's a very smart, understanding lady and you'll learn alot!! take her she's amazing :)
Not very helpful. I am a disabled student, no notes during exams. NO technology use whatsoever. Extra credit options , but not heavy-weighted.
Gutierrez is an amazing instructor! She is really passionate and dedicated to helping all her students succeed in the classroom. Go to class, take good notes, and you will pass the class. Tests are everything covered in the notes. Best professor I have had and will probably ever have.
Took her in the summer. She's very strict when grading essays, you will write a lot. She recycles questions in her final from her exams. 4 exams (lowest 1 will be dropped), Participation points, Media Journals (this is HW), Extra Credit (2 maximum), no quizzes, 1 book report of a president(9-10pgs), 1 group project (5-10pgs) and a final. Good Luck.
Be on time or she'll start locking the door. Lectures aren't boring. Will repeat/clarify if you ask. Engages students when lecturing by using them as examples. 6 graded class discussions. 1 group assignment. 20 hrs community service required during the semester you're taking the class. 3 midterms with multiple choice questions and essay question.
Absolutely awesome teacher. Dull subject that she transforms into something super interesting! 7:45am class and I only missed 2 classes, that is just how good she is. She does sometimes lock the door to keep out late people. Tests can be a tiny bit hard because of the amount of info. She'll drop 1 test.
GREAT instructor. I really wish she taught more than Intro Poli Sci because I would take every class she offered. I had no interest in political science before this class and now, I'm considering getting a degree in political science. Take her class!! Definitely not a class you can slack off in and get a good grade but such a great class.
She truly loves what she teaches and I have to admit its infectious. I never liked politics but her class has started to change my mind! You'll do fine if you take notes and attend the test reviews! I HIGHLY recommend her!
Loved her. Made me not hate the subject. Take her and take her now!
I heard she was great and was not at all disappointed -- the good reputation is totally deserved! Gutierrez is a lot of fun to listen to and is really good at getting discussions going, etc. She expects a lot from her students, so be on top of it!
I LOVED THIS LADY. she know what she's taking about, and is great at what she does. TAKE THIS CLASS
Excellent teacher! Thought I was going to absolutely hate this class, but I ended up kind of liking it. Definitely the friendliest and most understanding professor I've ever had. Take notes, attend test review, and work hard on the group project and you will easily pass!
Excellent class, everything is very clear and concise if you attend class and take notes on lectures. There are mandatory group discussions, just talk 3 times and you'll get full credit. WATCH OUT FOR THE GROUP PROJECT. Choosing your group members will make or break you, and the project is worth a lot of points. Also, community service is required.
The class is pretty interesting. sort of difficult. The group project is a pain in the butt, make sure you choose your group wisely. Community service is required-but not a big deal. Take notes. Not textbook necessary. Study and attend the study class sessions.
No nonsense type of a teacher. Instructions are clear. If you fail it is because you did not pay attention in class. I dropped because of personal issues but I was on the track of getting an A. The only thing that irritated me was my group asked her to drop one of our members as she didn't do any of the work. Next day the girl was not informed...
Super easy A if you take notes during lecture. Everything that should be in your notes is written on the board. Still read textbook for better clarification. I made flashcards of every sentence of her notes and got A's on all her tests. Tests are directly related to what is written on the board. The final is a conjunction of test questions
I would definitely recommend Gutierrez. I heard that she was good and found this to be very true. She has very interesting lectures that are easy to understand. She writes the notes up on the board, which makes note-taking very easy.
This woman and this class is absolutely phenomenal. You will actually learn a lot and enjoy it. Don't really need the book, just take notes and you'll be fine-tests are all based on notes. Group project is easy, she doesn't grade it tough. 20 hours of volunteer service required.
best teacher I've had at WVC. everything is written on the board for you so you can copy. tests are easy as long as you study your notes. participation is encouraged especially during class discussions, which you are graded on. allowed cheat sheet 4 final. 1 group project that requires a lot of time. must do 20 hours of community service volunteer
Nice lady, lectures are interesting and often end early! She only teaches Amr Gov and has been doing so for 15+ years. A bit rehearsed, but you don't need the textbook, and she writes her own tests. Tons of EC and easy group projects. Makes you work on the honors project, but it's an easy class for honors credit.
One of the best teachers I have taken here, but you definitely have to work for your grade. Beware of the group project. It's a good project, but don't leave it until the last minute. Study for the test, do good on the group project, and do the community service, and you will get a good grade.
Gutierrez is amazing! She loves politics and it clearly shows! Her lectures are awesome and really engaging. Her tests are a bit long and difficult but if you show up and participate you can pass with an easy B. You don't need the textbook but it does help if you do.
Ms. Gutierrez is an amazing instructor. Yes her tests are hard but she is a very good teacher. She helps you when you are unsure about something. She offers extra credit. She is funny, smart, and knowledgeable. I highly recommend taking her for Poli 001 , she makes you work for the grade but it's worth it! Take her class!!!
She is unclear with what she wants in your essay and her tests are really tough. I got an A in this class, but wow did she make me work for it. She gives only a max of 20 extra credit points, which saved me from having an A instead of a B. On the plus side, her lectures are great and educational. Would not take again though. Too tough of a grader
Nichola is the best professor I have ever had. She is so inspiring, and regardless of your political views, she will teach you so much! Take her class, and attend her lectures and study for tests and you will definitely succeed.
The teacher is punishing and unforgivable to her students on the tests and essay that she assigns. Requires critical thinking as a crutch to even get a passing grade on assignments and tests rather than a way to ace them. She should give out participation points and unlimited extra credit opportunities to balance out how hard her class is.
Mrs. Gutierrez is the single best teacher I had in my 2 years at West Valley. I am a Psych major and I only took PoliSci for graduation requirements but this turned out to be my favorite class. She has many assignments and extra credit options, you will pass as long as you do the work. 1 group project and she makes sure everyone does their part.
Prepare to sacrifice some time to this class because she really makes you work for it and I suggest if you already have a busy schedule this class may make your life more stressful with all the outside of class stuff for example the 20 hours of community service and group project, so keep that in mind. But overall her lectures are great.
There are few teachers at West Valley that truly care about their students, & she is one of them. Mrs. Gutierrez is helpful, understanding, but also pushes her students. Mrs. Gutierrez's class is not an easy A but with good work you can definitely pass. She is also the sweetest person ever!
Mrs. Gutierrez is an AMAZING teacher. I wasn't very interested in poli sci and I was dreading this class but she made the topic fascinating and her passion is really contagious. I would love to take a class from her again. If you pay attention in class and take good notes you'll definitely be able to pass.
This teacher doesn't take the time to explain topics if you don't understand it the first time. She doesn't understand that some of us need more time.
she is absolutely lovely and her class is engaging and very very educational. you learn a lot in this class and she makes it fun. her lectures are long but not dreadful. she's a tough grader and her tests are very very hard, but shes not evil like most teachers and shes willing to help you get better. just make sure your phone doesn't go off!!
She is very nice and her lectures are interesting. You have to do 20 hours of community service though.
I really loved this class. You can see and feel her passion as she teaches. Some people might say it's hard, but I think it is entirely worth it. It's a great class and I really enjoyed it.
I have so much respect for this woman. I HATE political science but she broke down lectures so that all students understand the material. The lectures are engaging because she speaks with you; not at you. she will gladly help you with any questions or concerns. I would highly recommend her. One of the best professors on campus.
Teacher Gutierrez is a nice, but at the same time tough teacher. If you miss the class, or you do not have her notes, you are in trouble. This teacher was making me work extra hard, and finally I received a B. She is straight, forward teacher!
I AM NOT KIDDING, SHE CHANGED MY LIFE. The way Gutierrez explains American politics is amazing. Her lectures are engaging and test are straight forward! My favorite class I have ever taken. She is passionate and super helpful. It also helps that she is hilarious! take her you won't regret it !!
She's passionate about her class and her energy transfers to the students. I didnt think I'd enjoy the class very much because of the topic but it turned out to be a lot of fun for me.
Very knowledgeable in the political field, has many great things to say, funny, and you will get an A if you write down all of the notes. Great teacher.
I have never had a class that was so interesting that I could not help but ask on the first day of class how we can avoid bias in an election. When she told me about being independent it was such a relief. Hands down my favorite class and teacher. The debates and video projects were so much fun and I know she got a kick out our singing and dancing
Class may seem difficult at first but it is actually fairly easy. 2 tests, a final, a group project, and 20 hours volunteering required. She drops your lowest test score, and grades fairly easy on all other assignments. Volunteering is easy, choose your organization and how many hours you completepoints 20/20100 points 10/2050 points.
Ms. Gutierrez is such a sweet professor. her tests can be difficult but her passion for the subject makes the class so worth it. She cares so much about us as students and about the country all together it is inspiring! I hated gov i hate history but her class, her teaching style and her stories made it much more engaging! 100% recommend her
She's a very nice person and has good lectures, but she is extremly knit picky on her essays. Her tests are also a lot of studying. Half multiple choice, half essay (and yes she will downgrade you for the smallest things there too). I scratched an A, but try to avoid her. Her grading asks too much effort for just a GE.
Nichola is one of the best professors at West Valley! The class may seem difficult at first, but if you take notes in class and review them a few times before the exams you will get an A, no problem. Exams are mainly MC questions with one short answer that is only worth 10 or so points out of 100 for each exam. Make sure to cite for papers!
One of the best professors at West Valley. 2 Tests (drops 1), 1 Final, 1 Paper, 3 Class Discussions (although she cancelled all of them). PLENTY of EC. Tests are MC ?'s + short answer, gives short answer ?'s before test & uses a whole class period to study as a class before each test. Clear and fun lectures. She really cares/inspirational. Take her
I wasn't too excited about taking Political Science but I couldn't have gotten through the class without her. Her lectures helped me out so much. I didn't have to go through the book too much since her lectures covered mostly everything, although it was nice to have a book. Not an easy A, but if you work hard you will get the grade you deserve.
She is a GREAT teacher. She knows what she's talking about and makes everything so easy to understand. Show up to class, take good notes, take advantage of her extra credit opportunities, do the research paper, community service hours and study for the exams. She drops your lowest exam score (we only have 2). Not an easy A, work for it.
I was not about taking this class because I do not like politics and I also found the subject hard, but Ms. Gutierrez gives great lectures and good examples. The only thing I didn't like was the group project because I dislike to have my grade depend on someone else participating. I take pride on all I do and work hard.
she is an amazing teacher. Lectures are not boring. gives You great feedback. And attendance isn't 100% mandatory
Nichola was by far my favorite teacher I've ever had. She really cared about her students and about what she was teaching, and helped you to succeed as long as you put in some reasonable effort. She lectured a lot but made them really fun and interesting, I always looked forward to her class. She is a smart, caring, well-rounded teacher.
Mrs. Gutierrez is one of the kindest teachers I've ever had. There is a group project, but our partner was being annoying, and she let us drop her. I took Mrs. Gutierrez's class and it was a breeze, there is a lot of textbook reading, but you can get by without doing it and end up with a B. Review notes, talk to her, and you will get an A.
Amazing professor. Nichola is very understanding and KNOWS HER STUFF. Her lectures are very straightforward. If you have any questions she doesn't mind going into further detail. 3 exams, 1 paper, and a group project. All very straight forward. I got an A in the class. She is one of the best professors at WVC.
Huge part of your grade is based on a semester long group project with multiple components. Don't buy the textbook/ access code, just tell her yours is not working and she will send you the articles. 2 papers are easy. Tests are very specific, make sure you really study. 2 graded discussions which are easy, just talk a lot when she observes you.
Professor Gutierrez is a serious gem. She makes her lectures relatable and clear to follow, allows enough time to discuss information while keeping an interesting pace. My friends who are generally not interested in gov really appreciated her caring nature. Offers a group project but is very understanding- she accommodates if issues arise.
Super easy, lectures are clear and evenly paced. 2 exams and a final, drops the lowest exam. Group project that was painfully easy. 1 essay, just need minimal effort/spelling to get 100%. Need 20 volunteer hours, she will help you get them. Really funny and sweet. Up to 45 EC, 30 from going to political events and 15 from exam review jeopardy.
Really, really nice teacher and person. She will help you out- has helpful office hours, responds to emails quickly, doesn't shoot down any questions. Her class is entirely lecture based, so if you miss class it's hard. 20 volunteer hours is mandatory and time consuming but brings your grade up by the end of it. not much homework, exams are hard.
Nichola is the best professor (and teacher, for that matter) that I've ever had! Her class inspired me to pursue a minor in polisci. She's caring and clear when explaining the material. She gives you 3 extra credit options, and there is 1 group project. 20 volunteer hours are required, so start doing them asap. I'll miss this class so much!
Amazing teacher who makes the material easy to understand. Her tests are fair, she drops the lowest one. She also gives out many extra credit opportunities. You do have to do 20 hours of community service, but over the course of the semester, it is not that much. She made me question switching my major to Political Science.
I love Nichola. Such an amazing teacher. Her lectures are extremely clear and she is passionate about what she does. Just go to class, write down what she does on the board, and study for tests (she drops lowest one). Final is fairly easy--you get a big cheat sheet. Could not have asked for a better experience. She is such a nice person as well!
It's a very easy class. There was two 1-page essays, two very easy midterms (the lowest grade gets dropped), a group project, and 20 hours of volunteering work. She writes all the relevant material/notes on the board in class, so the textbook was useless. The lectures are amazing and she's a very sweet lady.
Professor Gutierrez is a nice, light professor to take. Your grade is basically 4 things, a paper, one test, a project and the final. The lectures are interesting to listen to and kept me awake in the morning. Also make sure to do the extra credit as it brought my grade up like 8%. Fun teacher and I would happily take her again.
Amazing professor. Gives great lectures and is super passionate and caring.
Only hard assignment is the volunteer hours! Go to class to listen to her amazing lectures, study for the tests, and you'll do great! She really wants you to succeed!
A great an interesting professor. Allows class to discuss the issues that matter, and makes her class structure clear. Totally recommend.
Over the years, I've had the pleasure and privilege of having a lot of amazing teachers, but Nichola is truly top tier. Her priority is to make you not only understand the material but relate to it as a healthy discussion is encouraged. Even as an honours political science class, I encourage non-political science students to take it!
Great teacher! Pretty much gives you everything you need to succeed and get an A. She provides good feedback, has clear expectations, accurately describes and prepares you for the test. good lecture, great notes and insight. very helpful and nice. attend class, take notes and keep up. she offers extra credit but sometimes nit picky on writing.
I wasn't excited to take this course, but my mind changed on the first day of class! Classes are mostly lectures but she makes them very fun and interesting. There is one essay, 3 exams, and one final group project. She appreciates when you engage and ask questions. She's very clear about her expectations so there are no surprises.
I absolutely love taking this class. She was very straight forward on what you needed to know and there was no fluff which I appreciated. Everything that we needed to know she would tell us and if you wrote down what was on the board, studied, and followed the directions exactly for her other assignments (they were not complicated) you would pass.
She has really insightful lectures. Kindest human being ever. From my memory, out of the 2 exams we took, she dropped the one with the lowest grade. A few papers to write. She really sparked my interest in American Gov.
Took as a high school senior, got a 99. WAY less work than AP classes: 3 exams, 2 essays, 1 group project (even made friends from this) AND extra credit! The tests are open note. Just take good notes during her lectures (which are recorded -> I watched on 1.5x speed).Gutierrez clearly cares about her students. TAKE HER! You won't regret it.
She is left leaning in her views which can get annoying at times, but she does make an effort to remain unbiased. Homework is rare except for two papers and a group project. Her grading criteria is really clear, but she is a STICKLER about grammar so definitely triple check your papers. Overall she is really nice and I'd def take her again.
She is super nice and her lectures are easy to understand. Makes you present a current event in every class. Drops your lowest exam grade. Extra Credit was very generous.
i was afraid to take this course but Nichola is so sweet, and an amazing teacher. lectures aren't overwhelming and we rarely have any homework besides reading the textbook. she gives us more than plenty of time for assignments and is always reaching out to us. she gives many extra credit options. she also has snacks in her office lol
One of my favorite professors! I did not read the textbook once and still got an A. She is so nice and caring so asking her questions is not intimidating at all. 10/10 would recommend, such a wonderful person to know.
Honestly wasn't too bad of a class. My only complaints were that the essay is really hard to get right first try, and I picked up on a ton of tension in the class. The group project wasn't horrible, but was drawn out imo. I should have gotten a B but I did all of the extra credit and she gave me an A.
Honestly, this class wasn't bad, but having to wake up at 7:45 for lectures was annoying. The group project is easy(depending on the topic). She is nice and I like her. to be fair, I fell asleep multiple times during her lectures.
Nichola is very sweet and knows her lessons inside and out. Exams are taken at home and technically not open note but she even says "I won't know if you cheat" so up to you. One easy group project, 2 papers with class average ~95. Use citations correctly. She dropped several assignments during stressful times of the year. Approachable, take her :)
Super kind prof and fascinating lectures!! No real homework, just a few papers and she grades easily if you show that you did the research and care about the topic/your work. She wants you to succeed and it is easy to do well if you just show up. Had 3 at-home, online exams (including the final) and she'll drop the lowest grade from the first 2.
She's an amazing professor. Not only does she give amazing lectures, but she also gives literally zero homework. I literally finished with higher than 100 because she also gives tons of extra credit. Also unique to this class is that you need to complete volunteer hours for a non-profit. Just keep that in mind so you can prepare ahead of time.
Gutierrez is overall a good professor. However, the workload can be intense though considering the 20-hour service requirement, group project, on top of papers, tests, reading etc. so definitely plan accordingly. I took her in F19 and failed, but retook the course again the following year and passed. That said! Highly recommend it for a GE course.
A lot of work, but not too hard and as long as you put in the effort you will pass. 20 hours of community service can be a deal breaker for some but it's worth 100 points and it's what got me the A+. Two tests, one of which is dropped, very clear criteria. A group project which she grades very generously (25% of it is just rating group members).
I personally do not like government or history by any means, but her class was doable. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities to save your grade, and tests are pretty much based on what's covered in class. Yes, you do have to volunteer 20 hours of community service, but even if you don't finish them, you'll still get partial credit.
Nichola truly cares for her students, and it shows. My biggest advice for this class is to do things well in advance (especially community service) and it will be a breeze. Make sure you know your classmates because there is a group project. Overall a great class.
Professor Gutierrez really cares about her students. The workload is manageable with some advance planning, and Unstuck ai can be a helpful study tool. Overall, a great class if you're willing to put in the effort.
It is literally impossible to fail this class if you try. She's a super easy grader and such a kind person. If you try, you will do well. I have never enjoyed a class so much!
The class was very straightforward. Follow and do everything listed in the Syllabus and Canvas it is a very easy and manageable class. Tests are all taken at home, which greatly helps with stress and anxiety. One group project is worth a lot of your grade so choose wisely and get your community service hours done sooner rather than later.
I genuinely loved taking Nichola's class as she was so kind and caring. She seems truly passionate about the class, and even though there are group projects, if you do all the extra credit (including the volunteer hours,) you will be fine. I would love to have her again!
Absolutely LOVED this teacher. Really fun and interactive. She's obsessed with her cats . Just pay attention to the slides in class and take notes and you will pass so easily. Nichola is very easy to talk to and welcomes questions. She brings the whole class together through discussions and group projects. She made a class im not interested in fun
Loved her and her class! Such an amazing prof! I had a good time in her class, was never really bored. I would highly recommend taking good notes of her slides, as the tests consist of them. She's very easy to talk to and would gladly help those who need help. Amazing group projects. Never really loved government until I took her class. 10/10!
