he might be smart, but he's got higher standard,CUZ HE GRADUATED FROM YALE...
He is alright but I would not suggest taking him cuz his exams are hard
Dr. Coch can be a dynamic and exciting instructor whose lectures are informative and fascinating. My only criticism is that he tends to treat the students like little children, and that his jokes can sometimes be a little cutting and sound mean-spirited.
do not take this man for a class that is held in a lecture hall...if you do, make sure you P/NC it.
He is a good teacher, but hard.
His tests can be difficult but they're fair and not on anything he doesn't cover in class. He HATES people who talk or leave and loves the ones that ask questions. If you show interest in the subject, you should do fine.
Dr. Coch is a great teacher! Not always understandable, but just ask questions and get your answers. Intimidating, but approachable. You'll never want to live near the shore for the "nice view" after taking this course! HURRICANES RULE!
Hard class...REads from the textbook...Hard tests..DOnt Take unless you are interested in geohazards. Its not an easy A..
I had this professor for Natural Disasters. This guy is one of the worst professors ever. Totally unpredictable tests. Sometimes says the textbook is right and sometimes his lectures, and he wrote the book! He doesn't curve either.
Very difficult, but extremely helpful and willing to guide you if you have problems with the material. He is a difficult test giver and even if you studied, it is hard to get a good grade. If you can, P/NC the class if you dont want to affect your good GPA
No Comments
This class *is* a natural disaster. The tests are extremely hard, and he doesn't put notes on the board. Yeah, he wrote the book but it doesn't do you any good if you have no idea what is going on.
this guy is horrible... the class seems easy at first cauz all he does in class is read from the textbook that HE WROTE but it is hardd. his tests r veryy hard the avg. was a 58 in the class and he didnt curve... i dropped it after the first test
No Comments
If you read the textbook, you'll do well. His class requires a good memory.

He is not as bad as everyone makes him seem...If you go to class, listen, and read the book you should do fine...The material is interesting if you just give it a chance...Also his tests aren't that bad if you study...My final grade was an A.
Definitely a hard class yet he is a fair grader and there is no way you can get lost with his work if you go to class and read the book. Anyone who complained can't value a good education; just look at their grammer and spelling. Not too credible
the person's comment under mine is a stupid moron. this teacher was the most unfair teacher. he made fun of everyone. how is it a good education if the highest grade in the class is an 80 and the avg is a 60??
Wasn't in his class this year, but he's a great teacher! Sarcastic and intimidating, but very approachable and encouraging. Read the book, do your best, and learn. I didn't get an A (tests can be hard), but loved class. Enjoy this tornado of a ride lol!
Had him for a graduate course in sedimentology. He's a great guy and believes in field trips and labs. I love that about him. It would be better if he taught more, and did less reading form the book!
One of the best lecturers I've ever had. Very interesting with a sarc. sense of humor. Loved the class so much that I took sedimentology with him. Tests are challenging but based on lecture and book. You must be a dedicated student to do well.
You sure won't want to live near the ocean for a nice view again! Take the class! You'll learn a lot. Great professor.
If you read the text and go to class you will do well..I P/NC the class because I didn't do to well on the first test and i did okay on the other two. I asked him at the end of the sesmester what i would have got if i didn't p/nc and he said a B becasue I came to every class and made an effort.
Great professor. A ton of fun and knows everything about his field. Study well and you won't have a problem. Class is a ton of fun too.
very funny and very intersting class to take. If you dont study you will not do well. If you show up and listen in class you really dont have to study.easy B+ class
The worst prof I've ever had.In order to get help you have to kiss his butt.Exams cover lectures that are not actually taught just covered, which means that you have to spend hours trying to learn something he was suppose to teach.Unfair exams, only 4 questions,if you miss one you fail.I don't wish t
This prof. use to be on the top of his game. Now he just rehashs the same info for all his classes. He doesn't do any research so has no fresh experiences. Though classes are entertaning, he grades unfairly, resents having to work too much, is disrespectful at times in class, and can be vindictive.
EXAMS are truly difficult. Reading his texts does not cover it. Must pay close attention in class.
He talks to fast and his lectures are boring and hard to undertand. He speaks to fast to take notes. He does not give extra credit work. The text book is also boring he thinks is easy & fun to read because he wrote it.
he thinks ur all little geologists who care about the class. u are really going to have to work in his class. pass on him.
Surfacial processes the dumbest crap. Im now an Earth Science teacher on long island. Coche never majored in hurricanes but never talked about them. I cant believe how boring that class was. Thinks he knows alot. We all know alot in one area doesnt impress me
No Comments
Oh boy, where do I start? If you're going to take this prof.,be prepared to teach yourself.Read the chapters before you go to class, because he just breezes right through them.It takes him 10 mins. to cover a 120 page chapter,he speaks to fast to take notes,& doesnt curve.I busted my brains,& got a B- for the class.Do yourself a favor, dont take him.
oh man, i had a terrible time in his class. he seems like a nice guy, cracks jokes every now and then but swears like the material is easy when the exams are tough as anything! never, ever, puts notes on the board, no quizzes or hw either. be prepared to teach yourself from the text because he goes wayy to fast! dont take him
Don't take this class unless u want your gpa to drop. His test are hard to answer is 50multiple choice ? for the 1st 2 test & 100 for the last. Unless u are crazy or if u like geology take him. Get prepared to read the book & to teach yourself the material. This class is too boring. If u want to get some points participated in class. Good Luck!
i got all As except for his class. his exams are... especially the final... 100 question... i had no idea what he was asking and i studied... i got stuck with 2 options in practically every other question in the final... if u can't take good notes dont take him... he needs to let students record his lectures...
Impossible. The workload is insane. Lectures are boring, and he talks too fast. Exam questions are extremely hard, and in essay form. Field trip isn't fun at all, and involves alot of strenous work, meaning labor. Plus every lab is the same exact thing, and gets really dull. Not to mention the labs are hard as hell. Simply put,"He Sucks"!!!
He reads out of his very own textbook, but he takes attendence, some interesting topics but his exams(mid and final) can be tricky, You gotta study everything!!!
I loved his class. he was funny and he knows his stuff! he provides interestin stories and clever analogies. he wasnt that hard either. maybe its cause i like this kinda stuff. make sure you read the text book!
I took a class with him on Environmental Hazards. He's on a committee for hurricane disaster planning. He was like, "While you guys are going to the beach, I'm trying to figure out if you'll have enough Port-a-Potties in a shelter!" Great guy, fun and easy to understand (well, if you love the subject, which I do, that helps too). So what if he reads out of his own book? IT'S A GOOD BOOK! He doesn't give lessons about himself, he teaches Geology. He's good at it. I highly recommend him.
I have never had a worse time in a class. You would think, natural disasters, would be an interesting subject, but not with Coch. His tests are extremely difficult, and because he wrote the book, doesn't write anything on the board. And he can be quite a snob at times too. I took this class without knowing what I was getting into. Don't let this happen to you!
tell me i care about purple sand. wow that guy cant teach. Big deal he might, and i said might know about hurricanes, but he has no style of teaching. You need to relate the material to persons life, or people lose interest coch. I received a decent grade but, i never seen an interesting class be taugh soo boring.
he was great and funny and is very inteligent. he really knows a lot and was a main character on a discovery chanel documentary. but make sure you attend class and read the tex book that he made himself.
He could be a worse teacher but it was kind of boring. Its a little too much geology for me, but he knows his stuff. studying might have helped tho lol
DISGUSTING
DONT TAKE HIS CLASS. HE THINK HE WROTE A BOOK SO HE DONT HAVE TO PUT NOTES ON THE BOARD. THERE IS NO REVIEW FOR TESTS, YOU HAVE TO READ THE CHAPTERS HE IS GOING TO SKIM THROUGH. ONLY 20% OF THE WHOLE CLASS ACTUALLY PASSES HIS CLASS. DONT TAKE HIM IF U DONT WANT A LOW GPA
so hard most the class is failing. Does not go over the material thoroughly enough in class Tests are extremely hard.
made people get F at his class, didn't give a review before the tricky exams... waste my money on the textbook and the course...don't take him....
Horrible professor and too full of himself. He can't teach and does not help you at all. He can't explain himself clearly.
Don't listen to the comments below. Prof. Coch is one the best lecuring professors I've ever had.The material is clear. The tests are based on how much effort you put forth into the course. The content is relevent to everyday life and interesting if you apply to yourself and the world in which you live.A class that will keep your attention -- enjoy
This class was awsome. Those of you who did poorly was because you didn't try. He could not have been any clearer. His exams were tricky, but all you have to do is read the text book, which btw he wrote.
This was the worst teacher I have ever had. He didn't help when I tried to do better, and I showed up every day and participated. I've never gotten a lower grade as I did in this class. Lecture hall I should say. There are so many students he doesn't care about anyone unless you know what he's talking about and that's unlikely. lol.
Coch's exams are not the easiest (although they are multiple choice) but he is a very knowledgeable, interesting professor and I would highly recommend taking a class with him. If you actually study for the tests they're not that bad...
He is a great professor, especially because he wrote his own book. But I do not suggest to take this class. His test are so tricky; basically you will have to memorize the all chapter. I don't understand the tests are so difficult, even though you study so hard. I would avoid to take this class.
His lectures are amazing. He makes geology to sound real to you.
there are no words to accurately portray this man and the feelings i have towards him. Sure his lectures can be interesting, but unless you want to teach YOURSELF the material-- DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Unfortunately he has tenure; however, YOU can decide NOT to take his class! STAY AWAY !!!
He explains everything. you have to read the textbook. his tests are HARD. he gives 3 exams. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
you basically have to memorize the entire book, which he wrote. he has tenure, so even if u have a grade problem, three tests. two midterms, final is 50 percent final grd. no extra credit he will always say that he wants u to do well, but he doesn't give a review for his exams, no curves.90% of class failed exams. strongly recommend not taking.
His lectures are intresting, but the exams are extremly hard. I dont think anyone passed the exams, plus there are no curves. He expects you to know everything, he doesnt give no review or writes anything on the board, all he does from the time he walks in till the time the class finishes is talk talk and talk. He is a GPA dropper.
If you want to hear how great NYC water is. Take this class. He tells you every class...atleast twice. Tests are hard, class discussion has little to nothing to do with tests - the only good thing about this class is there's no HW... Take this class if you absolutely have to - or if you like very tall, very loud, and very hot professors...
he is too old to teach, he messes up and screw up with everything.he is assuming everyone in his class is an expert of Geology. if you want to fail or have fun with memorizing stuff. take his course!
This is an amazing man. His lectures are a lot of fun and keep you awake. I've learned so much from this class its incredible. No professor has ever kept my attention like he has. His tests are indeed hard, but if you actually study and attend every class then you will pass.If you want to learn something, take this class. He knows his stuff.
Most likely, your GPA will drop if you take this class.
THE CLASS WAS FUN SOMETIMES ... YEA IT DEFINATELY DROPS YOUR GPA ... DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
What a character
I've never had a worse professor (and I've been in this school for a long time). He's going to make it sound that you're doing great and he's going to boost your grade at the end, but thats just one big lie. Being in that class made me want to kill myself.
I used to love geology...this guy made me hate it. The most incompetent professor ever! He even made mistakes on his own multiple choice test! Learn nothing but useless geology vocabulary.
He's boring, has no idea how to work with blackboard, and very incensitive to other cultures/people/anyone else. avoid his class its just a waste and will end up hurting ur gpa
he's taught for so long and knows what he's saying. recently, fox news even interviewed him for how New York stands in the event of a hurricane. he dumbs things down and makes his own definitions sometimes, and has written his own textbook. but he's very mean, disrespectful, and an unfair grader! stay away unless absolutely necessary!!!
You gotta love QC for keeping all those senile semicrazy old men on the payroll...do not take him
Don't listen to the comments of lazy people. Judge for yourself. Prof. Coch is one the best lecuring professors I've ever had. The material is clear. The tests are based on how much effort you put forth into the course. The content is relevent to everyday life and very interesting. A class that will keep you interested long after it's over-- enjoy
I have no idea what the person below is talking about. If i didnt know any better i'd say that coch wrote that comment himself. One of the worst professors! Screws up your gpa bad!!!

he is a good professor and he really wants to help students.there are 3 exams but so difficult the average grade is 54!
His test is a bit on the hard side. But overall good professor. He really knows his stuff. Just have to study for his test to do well
Relatively interesting, his goal is to make everyone fear for their lives...very tough tests but if you read the book (and graphs and case studies) you can get a solid grade
gives 3 exams attendance counts use the book a lot if you are nice and study a lottt you'll do well
sits on his desk the whole time. does not move. reads out of the textbook (which he wrote). if you read the textbook, you dont even have to go to class. he passed out an attendance sheet for the first part of the class and then slowly started giving up with it.i withdrew the class before it had a chance to finish. hard tests.
He is a great professor who is very knowledgable and is very interesting to converse with. I had a hard time with the material, but i guess that was my own thing.
I had this guy for a professor in like 95 or 96. You won't be bored. He wrote his own text books. He loves this stuff. My grade wasn't great. I should've studied more. Take a class with him and enjoy it. It's hard to find a teacher/ professor so into what they teach year after year. You can catch him on tv being used as a local storm expert.
I had him for Natural Disasters and it was a hard yet very interesting course. His tests are hard. This course set me up really well for Geology 101. He is a great professor, that is if you want to learn. Highly Recommended
I had him for Natural Disasters. Whoever says that this professor is good, lied. I was so interested in the course and I never got anything lower than a B before and with him I got my first D. He doesn't teach as someone said before he reads from the textbook that he wrote and doesnt explain anything. DON'T TAKE HIM.
good professor but just extremely hard tests...the final was impossible!
I never knew what a real jerk was until taking Coch. Despite what he says, Attendance is NOT mandatory. Just suck up to him and be a teachers pet & you'll pass with a B no matter how bad you did. Of course, if you show up to every class and actually study his tests are also super hard so unless you have a photocopy brain DO NOT take this class.
He was a very good prof. the tests were hard but if you read the textbook you should do fine, make sure you ask alot of questions so he knows you and your grade will go uppp!
Not fun to look at, or listen to. There is 1 test, 1 midterm, and the final. Unless you suck up to him or have a photographic memory you wont get higher than a C, if you're lucky. Sit in the first two rows and smile at him a lot. Don't talk to anyone except him. I would not reccommend taking this class. He has just been teaching way too long.
Take good notes: lectures are entirely oral, no notes on board. Do expect to be picked at random to answer questions. There's a term paper, but the grade on that is based on how much he likes you, not the actual content. Final grading is very fuzzy (i.e. some people who deserved C's inexplicably got A's or B's).
HARD HARD HARD. HE HAS SOME INTERESTING STORIES TO SAY WHICH HE'D REPEAT THEM TWICE AT LEAST, LONG LECTURES, GETS BORING AFTER A WHILE. TESTS ARE REALLY HARD. MEMORIZE THE TEXT IF U WANNA PASS. BE A SUCK UP TOO. SIT AT FRONT. UNLESS U R GOOD MEMORIZE IT, IF NOT THEN DO NOT! I TOOK THE CLASS AS AN ELECTIVE AND ENDED UP MESSING MY GPA!
As long as you listen to his lectures and take notes, you're fine. His tests are really straight-forward, everything's from the book so just read the book, read the notes, and listen in the class.
do not listen to the fool who commented before i did. there is a reason this guy has atrocious ratings. everyone hates him, hes an awful teacher, gives impossible tests and he couldn't care less. if the person before me was correct, he wouldnt have a 2 rating.
I came into this class ready to learn and do my best. I came to class everyday, read all the chapters, took notes, participated, and studied for all the tests. In the end I got a D. Bottom line this class will destroy your GPA and it's proven. On the college course evaluation it has all the grades. These people aren't lying.
DO NOT TAKE HIM, HE WILL FAIL YOU, I WENT EVERYDAY AND STUDIED AND HE GAVE ME A F, I P/NC'D THE CLASS BECAUSE I READ EVERYONES COMMENTS, DO NOT TAKE HIM, IF YOU DO EXPECT A F OR D IF YOU GET 100S ON HIS EXAMS, I KNOW MY FRIEND GOT ALL A'S AND HE GVE HER D AND SHE LOST ALL HER SCHOLARSHIPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT TAKE RUNAWAY
WOW! SUPER HARD PROF, BOASTS THAT THE CLASS AVERAGE HAS BEEN A 50-55 FOR 40 YRS....DNT TAKE HIS CLASS IT WILL MESS UP UR GPA....OTHER THAN THAT THOUGH HIS CLASS IS PRETTY INTERESTING AND HES VERY KNOWLEDGABLE AND ENTERTAINING BUT WOW ITS TOO HARD AND SO IT TAKES AWAY FROM THE CLASS...STAYYYY AWAY I HAD TO P/NC IT AND IT WAS A DREADFUL CLASSSS
Took Coch for Oceanography & for Natural Disasters. Absolutely loved his lectures. As much as I loved this class it was one of the hardest I've ever taken. Even if you take great notes & read the textbook cover to cover, the tests are still very hard. If this is your area of interest, I say go for it. If you just need a filler class, steer clear!
Okay, where to start. First off, he's the worst Professor I have ever taken so far. He doesn't care if students pass or fail, doesn't help out at all, his exams are hard and contain very specific questions, notes are hard to take due to having to focus on the book during class, does not allow laptop use for notes and gives shorter time for tests.
Interesting class, great professor.Lectures are oral but if you do your reading at home, take notes, and ask questions and you?ll be fine. Exams are not excessively hard if you study. He answered any questions you may have. He's a fair grader. He will factor effort into your grade. For everyone who complains it?s too hard:deal with it, it?s college.
Very interesting class. The teacher is the top of his field. Many did find that his tests were hard, but if you are a participating student, he will give you a higher grade at the end of the day. If you are absent it is ok because most everything from class is from the book (that he wrote) but dont miss class too often.
Great professor! The class itself is not so easy, it makes you think. Gives you a fair grade at the end of the semester. The tests can be hard - so you have to study.
The class itself is incredibly interesting, but his tests are impossible. I feel like no matter how long I studied for I still wouldn't do well. If you're concerned about your gpa, I say skip the course. But if you're looking for something interesting regardless of the grade, this is it!
Informative and interesting class, especially after Hurricane Sandy hit. Grade is based completely on 2 Midterms and a Final exam. Just pay attention to the lectures and skim through the textbook (which he wrote) and you'll get an A.
interesting class. terrible teacher. It wont matter how much you study for this class you wont pass it. After the first test the highest grade was an 82 and the lowest was 26. I know you're old and stubborn but when most of your class is failing it's time to rethink how you're teaching.
This professor expects everyone to be a expert in Geology. He does not curve the tests..... Maybe if he actually gave helpful test review questions and said what to study for on the test rather then saying read the entire textbook everyone would pass and be satisfied. His lectures are interesting but his tests..... What is he thinking...
Had straight A's until i took this course...super hard class, got 90 in exam but still got a C. Dont do this to yourself! Please!
He's a nice guy, good sense of humorand teaches an interesting course, but his tests are impossible. The class average is always failing. If you value your GPA, stay away.
When I first took the class I received a C but that was because I was honestly slacking throughout the semester. When I took this class a second time, I received an A. As a student, you have to make sure Coch knows your name! Participation is a major key factor in making sure you receive a great grade. I loved this class. It made me strong.
If you truly care to understand geologic processes Dr. Coch is one of the best. His tests are tough if you do not take notes during lecture. NOTES ARE ESSENTIAL!!! Be active during classes. Raise your hand and show that you are there to learn. Participation matters. Will take again!
He is a tough professor and you will have to work hard to pass the class. I would not recommend this class to any non-major or to anyone who is trying to keep a high GPA. The class is not bad and the professor is very knowledgeable and can also be pretty cool sometimes. However you will need to work hard for a good grade
Coch's lectures/stories are fascinating, he gets his information from outdated methodology. There is little science behind the far fetched stories he calls lectures. You learn more from earth's processes from other professor's, real scientists. Exams, papers and project grade are all based on how well you regurgitate his stories Learned little.
Coch is an excellent professor and geologist. One of the best there is. If you don't slack off, put in the effort, and do the work, you should be fine.
Great class.
