young, smart, three exams: mc, terms, essay........some website based essays........lot of work in five weeks but good class
Pretty good teacher overall. Very helpful with questions and assignments were clearly given. This class wasn't too hard, but it wasn't a breezy walk in the park either.
Great teacher. Took him for summer. We read one book, wrote 4 1 page website evaulation, and 3 exams. Very helpful, very easy, very clear.
A truly great teacher! Brand new so he really challenges you but enthusiasm motivates students interest in History!
A truly great teacher! Just started teaching so he really challenges you but enthusiasm motivates students interest in History!
Very good teacher, he really likes to get to know his students and what they think. The reading is a bit lengthy, but his tests are reasonable. MC, essay, and short answer. He grades fairly and you'll end up getting a better grade than you think if you just put in the effort. Best history class ever.
I took him this summer and I enjoyed it. I got an A in the class. Just study the test review sheet he gives you and do the weekly website evaluations (which are easy) and it's a easy A. He's nice and knows what he's teaching. I definitely recommend for you to take him.
Amazing Teacher and is very helpful. Organized and does not go off topic, likes when students participate in lectures. Reading is a must because he likes discussions over the readings. Gives out reviews before tests which are EXTREMELY helpful. Does like to assign weekly assignments and does offer extra credit.
Gotta love him! He's one of the best professors I ever have! I would definitely recommend him to anyone.
Good teacher, he takes interest in his students. He does give you a lot of reading and essay writings, but he grades in our favor as long there is a good effort taken by our part. I really enjoyed taking this class with him. The lectures were fun and doing the extra credit was enjoyable.
Awesome teacher, 4 tests (including the final which is only over the last section, not the whole class) and 1 paper, that it for the whole course. He gives great reviews for the test. Take this guy if you want an A, and light work load.
Ffriendly person. Class participation necessary. VERY HEAVY WORKLOAD. Especially because I have 3 other classes. I have to read chapters from the main book, 2 extra books, and these separate readings. Definitely not an easy A because on the tests, there's so much you have to memorize. You have to know the 5 Ws with 80 terms, plus the readings etc.
Super super easy teacher please take him !! he works with you and grades fair Take him.
Nice, professional, and knowledgeable professor. His lectures are entertaining. There are three tests, including final, an essay, and you get graded for participation. He chooses on people randomly, but doesn't embarrass. Tests are not easy tho. Three parts: vocab, quotes, and essays. He assigns readings weekly. Not an easy A, but you really learn
Excellent teacher! he is very intelligent and professional. You do have to read a lot but if you do so you will have an easy A. Participation in class counts 20%. He ask mostly about your opinions so no answer is right or wrong. He is one of the best teachers I had, so far, at HCC. You will learn a lot.
Dr.Cox is an awesome teacher! Listen and participate in class and you will already have a good grade in 20% of the class. If you take good notes and listen then you can just study off of them and get a good grade on the test! Took in the summer session I in 2014 and did fairly well. Extra credit is available!
Honestly he is the best professor I've ever had, just read what he assigns and you'll do fine
He is one of the most incredible professors i've ever had. If to take into account that i was not interested in history at all and all i could say about history was leave the past in the past, he changed my view about it to 180 degrees. His lectures are very interesting, due to the reason that he truly loves what he is doing.
I'm not usually impressed by a history class by any means, but he made it easy and clear to understand and to follow. I have a new found interest, took him for both Hist1301 and 02 A's in both. Work is required but wont feel like it
Great professor and AMAZING speaker! He speaks so clearly and fluently and doesn't even look at any notes! He clearly knows what he's talking about and speaks in a way that's easy to understand. Tests are a little tough, lots of vocab. Just read the chapters and you should be ok. DO GOOD ON THE ESSAYS AND READ THEIR BOOKS. -Seriously.
I actually havent taken this guy but I saw him change a tire for a random student in the parking lot at Missouri City campus. I dont think any other professor would ever do that. Best guy ever.
Since I've been in college this professor is one of the BEST i ever had he speaks very very clearly, he knows whats he is talking about, lectures are amazing, he makes it interesting, Great Proff, if you do NOT like to read do NOT take this Class & a lots of Vocabs. i had an amazing time learning how AMERICA killed everybody for their own benefits
There are 3 tests and 3 essays (4 page double spaced). He drops the worst grade. Final is not comprehensive. The textbook is a must have because the tests are based on the vocab from the textbooks. The essays are from book readings, which he provides for free online. His lectures aren't long and he asks questions. Helpful, Respectful, and Dedicated
This professor is amazing, i always blame it on the beard. His lectures are not boring like other, he engages the class and the only bad thing about it is that the students do not read in order to keep the lecture and conversation going. I took him for both history classes, my class schedule was based on his class, I did not want to miss it. READ!
Dr. Cox is an AMAZING professor. He is VERY knowledgable, and EXTREMELY helpful. However, his class was tough. Hardest class I have ever taken. Insane work load; I nearly dropped the class. But he was determined that I stay, and was by my side to help me. He is an Exceptional human being. If you can handle pressure, take him. Lots of reading!
Professor Cox is an extremely nice person. I knew he was going to make history enjoyable just by reading his syllabus. I took the class during a 5 week summer course. There is 4 tests and 2 papers, both over novels, so be ready to be on top of your reading and studying. I did not study for one test and still made a 75. I definitely recommend him!!!
To be honest, history is my weakest subject; however, Mr. Cox makes you understand, not just memorize the terms. I took him for a 5-week course this summer. My summer class consisted of 4 tests and 2 essays; he will drop the lowest grade that you have, so keep that in mind. I will gladly take him for History 1302!
He is great!!! His lectures are wonderful!! He gets the class involved keeps it interesting! A couple of reading assignments with essays that follow they're lengthy readings but you have a while to read them plus they're good stories. Do the reviews and you'll pass the exam! Kinda need the book to do the reviews so its Mandatory to have the book.
Awesome Professor I would take him again He knows History very well Take him for History
The best professor ever I wish he could teach all my other subjects!!! Uses book. Take notes and pay attention to what he says in class. 4Tests 3Essays 3Extra Credit Very Easy Very Fun
Would definitely recommend him. Never been a fan of history but he actually made it enjoyable. Study the reviews & key terms in the book and it's hard not to get an A or B. Attendance isn't mandatory but you'll miss a lot. He's very helpful & wants to see you succeed, also gives extra credit. NO FINAL. Take him!!!
He is honestly the most boring professor ever. The only good thing is that there are no test but he you have to read a boring book and write 3 parers about it and there was an 8 page research paper on the topic of your choice. And you honestly don't even need to show up to class, what he lectures about has nothing to do with what you write.
Though I hate history this class wasn't bad like I thought it would be! He made history interesting! We did have to read a lot though. 3 essays 1 research paper that's it. But he does expect good stuff. I will take for 1302! No textbook just a book of stories. Or you can find them online.
At first the class may sound and seem overwhelming but it's a great class and straight to the point. You can jump ahead on the syllabus and if you have any questions he will help you and stay connected. Be prepared to read
If you don't like to read then don't take this class. You are required to read a book with 6 autobiographies. You will have to write 3 essays and 1 research paper that is 8 pgs. If you don't like to read then this class isn't for you. I passed the class with a C and i did not read them through. I skimmed through the reading and did essays last min.
Professor Cox is very clear in what he expects from your work. 3 easy essays from one book you have to read and one 8page paper. No midterm or final. Only skimmed through the ebook readings to use for the book essays. Does expect little participation from his students. Would take again.
highly recommend. easy grader, no tests, just papers. whole term you work on a research paper. gives interesting readings you have to cite, so try to stay on track. always lets you know when the discussions are about the book a day before. willing to help. talks the whole class, can be a bit boring. try to talk a lot!
You have to read & write a lot.
Best teacher ever, writes essays, but amazing lectures. Highly recommended.
I am taking his class this Fall 2016 semester, and it "was not at all" as any others said. This class was so heavy with 4 heavy tests, which required too many (overload) readings. The reviews were like nothing as they were very broad/general. You have to read a lot, and remember so much in details to have good grade. Absolutely NO for me!!
Very tough grader on the essays. It was my first History class but felt like I was writing papers for law school with the way he grades them. I don't recommend if you're not the best writer or have trouble with essays in general.
Do not recommend this professor.. 1) 1 big book review (20 %) 2) 3 tests 15% (each) and final 15% 3)there are 15 quizes answers are found online if you want to have a great gpa and not want to fail history i do not recomeded this professor. 4) he makes you read 3 books and also 3 chapters every book every week.
He is so hard.. Not recommended.
I work hard to maintain all A's & I failed his class because of how hard of a grader he is. It's almost impossible to pass his essays. Not sure what he's looking for or what he expects for a first history class. I don't recommend him to anyone.
I took him for Hist 1301 during the Fall 2016 semester. He's a respectful individual and is very knowledgeable about US history. He gives interesting lectures. His exams were difficult, but he gives chances for extra credit. The answers for all his quizzes are online so that helps too. He makes you work hard/study for your grade.
Professor Cox has been the best history professor! Although there is a lot of reading, the course material is very interesting and easy to read. Fair grader.
Professor Cox is great. Yes there is reading and pop quizzes but he makes it clear how grading is done. NOT BORING AT ALL! Time seems to fly once the discussion starts plus participating helps. He makes it interesting by keeping the class involved by asking questions etc. I definitely recommend prof. Cox I learned a lot and so would you.
Dr. Cox is a caring, intelligent, and a respectful professor. Although there are quite a lot of reading assignments, he is always willing to help or explain any questions. We had four exams that covers four chapters per exam, a book review and quizzes. He also drops the ten lowest quiz grades. He is very understanding and patient. Would take again!
I knew this class would have a lot to read but never imagine it will be that much! 30-40 pages in one book, another 2 chapters from other book and 1 chapter from a really boring history research book about a Native Americans tribe every week. 30 questions quiz multiple choice every Sunday. 1 essay per chapter, so 4 essays per month and 1 book revie
Best college proffessor. Makes you feel important and like you matter. If you show that you're trying he notices. He's a great teacher and he's funny!
Worst professor! 4 reading essays 1000 words and 1 research paper 8 to 10 pages. Each essay you need to read over 100 pages.
Took him online as full semester class & loved it! I'd like to comment that although the papers due were long & required reading, it's pretty easy if you simply manage your time and all. Plus his grading was not as rough! I feel as if you put a bit of effort he'll notice and have empathy for your grade. Extra plus, he gave extra credit opportunity!
Great professor. Grades consist of weekly quizzes which are fairly easy if you do the reading and five papers including one major research paper that counts as your final. Reading material is interesting and relevant. Responds to emails quickly. Gives some extra credit opportunities towards the end of the semester.
OMG, the greatest, love him, wish he taught all my classes.
I work hard to maintain all A's & I failed his class because of how hard of a grader he is. It's almost impossible to pass his essaysI don't recommend him to anyone. His a tough grader who does not show empathy even when your trying everyone dropped his class it was 30 of us at the beginning and it ended up being 10 of us sometimes not all 10 came
He is a good professor and will give constructive criticisms on each of your work. He will not tolerate plagiarism, if you are planning to copy or paraphrase from online then pls don't take him, he will give you a 0 for plagiarism. If you are ready to read and write and actually do your work then you will do fine and will get an A.
He's the worst professor in all of my life. He wants all assignments before time but himself never checks and grades the work time. You submit and forget that you have submitted assignment because he will grade it at the end of term with a "C". He tells you that he has a lot of classes and can not check assignments. He is rude too. Do not take him!
He is a good teacher, but its a lot of work to do. If you are a full time student and you are working too, I will recommend not to take his class. I worked very hard but still got a very bad grade. By the end of the semester most of the students dropped his class, there were only 11 students left.
This was by far the worst class I have ever taken! So much reading is required as if History is the only class you are taking and there are papers due every four days. Must be a 1000 words minimum. He is very critical. Doesn't tell you what needs improvement, and every paper good or bad is a C. He is also very rude.
i passed this class with an A without even trying. I would bring my laptop and watch netflix and not even pay attention to the lectures. The key to passing this class is to pay attention to the lectures that he gives in class about the books because if you dont read (Like me) it helps out a lot!
I would 100% recommend you to take this class, you'll read a lot but there aren't any tests. we had 4 essays on different readings and one research paper that was due in parents throughout the semester so it wasn't bad. you don't have to buy the books since you can find them online, he usually gives 85's, I didn't read two books(aka my grade)
He is a very tough grader. He expects us to read hundreds of pages of historical autobiographies. Essay topics are difficult. Taking his class was a big mistake. I will have to repeat HIST 1301 for a better grade. He speaks fast and expects us to understand the concepts on our own. It's more of self-study. Almost half the students dropped his class
The best, best, best! Love him, great class. Wish he taught all my classes.
A great professor if you are an actual history major. I would've done better if I turned in my essays on time but I had no motivation cause I hate history. There 4 essays over our readings (that I never read, he always gave a well detailed summary in class so I just skimmed the reading for quotes), and our term essay were the assignments.
I took HIST 1302 with him this semester and I regret taking him. He does not know how to respect others especially when students have questions. If you want to receive a B or an A I recommend you take someone else.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER... GOT MY FIRST C DESPITE TRYING MY BEST.. HE IS JUST HORRIBLE. HE KNOWS HISTORY. LECTURES ARE INTERESTING BUT ONLY TAKE HIM IF YOU DON'T MIND GETTING A C OR D AFTER PUTTING ALL YOUR HARD WORK INTO HIS ESSAYS. MAKES YOU READ 5 BOOKS OVER A SEMESTER. MORE WORK THAN A PHD CLASS.
He's awesome. He knows his stuff, one of smartest teachers I ever had. Really expects us to read and work so we learn. It's reading/writing focused, not quizzes and tests. Some love that, some hate that, but he will work hard to make you a better writer.
I really enjoyed this professor. I took him for my summer class, History 1301, and your grades really depend on you. I work full time and had other summer classes, yet I found this class to be by far the easiest. The book reports that 'killed' everyone its bs. Just skim the book for useful quotes and use prior knowledge on history and it's easy.
I actually took this class two times as I got a D on the first attempt (although this was more of a fault on my side). The 2nd time I took it was during the 5 week summer session, and OMG that was intense as hell as the essays were TOUGH with very little time at all. The lectures were very engaging though as he speaks to us directly and articulate.
This class was incredibly difficult as he has very rigid grading criteria for the essays and book reports he assigns. However, I will say that even though the class was grueling, the amount of essays and reports I wrote in this class SIGNIFICANTLY helped my writing skills, so I thank him for that. Another good thing is there are no tests at all!
I would not even recommend this professor to a friend. He claims to give you the benefit of the doubt although he doesnt and doesnt bother helping you on improving your grade or tell you what youve done wrong. Wouldnt retake his class ever again.
I have never been this engaged within a history class. His lectures are straight forward. Pay attention and you will be surprised about the amount of material you are capable to retain. While grades are based off of essays, do not understimate the essays. Yes you have to do a lot of reading! Welcome to college. Overall, Professor Cox is amazing!
He is a good teacher and knows a lot about history. Also if you take him you will read ALOT and have to write an essay for everything you read using Chicago style ONLY with references. It was hard but overall he was a good professor. Also a very very tough grader!
Awesome Professor in HCC. Delivers 200% efforts in his class and no tests/exams. Lectures are amazing and interesting. Highly recommended and will join for another class. Attendance benefits.
There is a lot of reading and papers. No test, just papers. Listen in class your most likely going to be using his lectures in papers and especially your research paper. If you need help just ask him, he'll try his best to help you.
I took the 5-week summer course. I will say there's a lot of reading and you must be prompt and ready at all times. The instructor doesn't care if you have a job or anything. He sets deadlines and expects all assignments to be submitted by the scheduled time. He didn't give me any feedback on the assignments he graded even when asked.
I took him for a summer online 5 wk course and did not read the free online textbook he provided, but got a high B in his class. You do have to try, and a few papers are 1000+ words, but if you hate reading like I do, you might be able to pass this without reading as long as you can write well. All assignments were written assignments.
I took him for the regular term. He was straight forward about what he wanted. The lectures were great. However, they were not related to the essays, which came from the readings assignments (some long af) Not books needed so thats a plus. Very caring and gave us a great advice at the end of the semester. I totally recommend on taking him!
I took Professor Cox in the Spring. His lectures are amazing but he does not test on them. There aren't any tests at all. You are, however, required to reach 3 books and write reviews on them. I found the books better than textbook reading. There is also a 10 page paper due as the final. If you start early, this is easy! I recommend this prof.
Great history teacher! Was super friendly and made funny jokes here and there throughout the semester. Super accessible outside of class through his email and is very open-minded. We didnt have any exams for this class, only essays. They were based on the books assigned and it was easy because he would go over an analysis of each in class!
You will have to read, there are usually 4 essay papers in a 16 week class. I started 1301 without knowing citations at all. HE WILL WALK YOU THROUGH IT, just talk to him. Professor C is the most open minded prof I have come across, he really cares about his students and makes it V easy to pass his class, 20% is just attendance n participation.
1302 had a lot of reading, he goes over the books in class. 1 major paper on a topic of your choice, he helps u through every step. Caring, incredibly knowledgeable, straight forward and genuine. I would take this prof for any and all classes he teaches if they were my requirements. Brilliant professor, anyone who says otherwise didnt try at ALL.
The professor might be better in the classroom, but definitely not online. If you have a job that is not flexible, forget it! You will constantly read 4 textbooks, participate in senseless discussions, and constantly write papers. Desired requirements for assignments were ambiguous and no assistance provided to help. He checks in if you drop behind
This class is easy. You dont have to read the history book or takes tests. You just read the books he assigns (theyre easy & u can listen to them on audio) and write 4 1000 word essays. Probably the easiest class Ive ever had, just write your essays
Grades you by only 5 things. Because of this its easy to fail.. it consists of Participation and 4 essays. He wants the essays in Chicago style and doesnt really explain what he is looking for. Just gives you topics... which is stressful and frustrating..
If you are looking for an A in his class , make sure you are excellent in writing. Below good is not enough for his class. He requires lots of things in his paper and he is also the toughest grader I've ever seen. NO British English or bad punctuation . Minus minus every mistake you had and let you down ! IMO don't take him
This professor wants you to know history as if youre a historian. Doesnt give feedback. Im literally a month into his class and I havent received a grade on anything. So Idk if Im passing or failing. Its adds on stress to the already existing stress of being a college student. Dont recommend.
I feel like Im in an English class. Taking him in an online class and doesnt give any feedback. The instructions for his essays arent specific so its hard to know what he is looking for. Dont recommend taking him.
Super easy class w no tests just essays! Write them in Chicago style, properly cite, and you can never fail. There are books to purchase in the class and you should buy them!! His discussions are funny, he's honest, and open minded.
this was my first time taking an online class honestly all you have to do is do the work and participate and youll get an easy A. He gives 4 essays and doesnt grade then heavily he also gives feedback. There are weekly discussions and if you do them youll be guaranteed to pass.
He gives great feedback on papers. Answers emails in Canvas immediately. Great books on slavery and Texas war. You cannot write the papers if you don't do the reading, so the complainers below are probably just lazy people who skipped the reading and wrote bad papers. Read, write, get an A or B.
Graded by 5 things. 4 essays & discussions. There are 2 chapter books, you need to really read to write your essays. He responds back to messages in a timely manner. He really makes you work for your grade. Although, I took him in a 5-wk course along w/ other courses.
4 essays, 2 discussions per wk, no final. You only need 2 chapter books to read in order to write your essays. Responds to messages quickly, he is very understanding. Makes you work for your grade. The only con was the reading load was very heavy, took him in a summer 8-wk course. Fair, unbiased grading. He taught me how to properly cite!
He literally only gave us 5 papers, a paper for each week since I took him in the summer. Literally was so easy. I just read what he told us to read and wrote the papers and he was an easy grader. Very easy A
Grading based on essays and discussions, no final. You need 2 chapter books to read to write the essays... essays use the Chicago style format. The only thing that I didnt like was that he changed everyones 100s to 95s last min with no explanation, which I think affected a lot of students.
He is a nice professor. Only give 4 essay to write each 1000 words. You need to read book! Participation doesnt really matter, he gave me 95 even though i slept. Highest he give is 95. 85 is an average and worst you can get is 75. Very nice and responsive
4 essays and easy assignments. His essays were pretty easy to get and A on if you read the textbook. You don't even need to read the whole textbook, but read the parts that your essay is focused on.
Read a lot, 4-5 essays. Just follow instructions and you're going to be fine. His lectures and discussions are the best. Def knows what he's talking about, but also wants students to be engaged.
This professor is very good. He loves his job. He teaches with his passion. 3 books needed but you can find them all on the internet, do not need to buy them. There are 4 exams all essays. That's it! Very easy to pass. His grad was so easy. Anyways, easy A
Professor Cox only has 5 grades to put in: Four papers, and Participation. As long as you participate in class a lot and do well on the papers, you will do great. You do not have to read everything from the books, he gives you in each essay prompt which sections to read. No exams. The papers are the exams itself. Really great Professor.
Four essay exams, 1k words. no other assignments. lectures were very engaging and fun. If you're a strong writer I'd recommend it. Don't skip class! He grades participation.
The class is based on reading books and writing essays over books without any comments or critiques about the essays from the professor. Would not take this class with the lack of effort from the professor, which is his occupation. Multiple students dropped from the class in my semester, so if you don't want to drop a class, DON'T TAKE THIS ONE!
First the essays were not graded on content but on grammar, second the discussions we had were just students assigned to groups, he have not lectures, just instructions to listen to discussions or podcasts. This is my first and last time taking a asynchronous course. This was a disappointing class.
If you have a job, a family, or a life, you'll have to give all that up to pass this class. The workload is tremendous, and the course is obviously taught by someone who thinks everyone likes history as much as he does and should major in it. If you don't like history, if you're a slow reader, or if you're not a proficient writer, you won't pass.
Summer 5wks TXHistory online anytime. 4 Essays 1k words to choose from 3 prompts & 2 discussion posts every wk. Cite sources on essays from tbk & 2 novels. Read where tbk sections for essay prompt may carry info. No quizzes/exams. I'm not a strong writer & I pass. Prof. gives feedback on how to improve an essay. Put in the effort & pass.
