Great prof! Really knows what he's talking about, and doesn't drag the lecture too long. One of the better professors on campus. Exams are standard and fair. Take his classes without a second thought.
Great lecture in all, clearly understand what he's talking about and is always there for you. Exams are tough nevertheless due to the nature of the course. I will take his course in a heartbeat and go to classes.
What a great prof ! Funny guy, interesting lecture, and VERY inspiriting. It would be a huge LOSS if you miss even one minute of his lecture. Haven't seen a better prof. Have him teach all finance and economic courses !
Seriously one of the best profs. Tough courses but that's a given for finance; made the material interesting and fun to learn. Do not miss his lectures, much of the exam is based on in class stuff. Great guy, always available to help outside of class as well.
I thought he did a good job, and did a good job of making the course more than just a textbook summary. This course would be easier for a 4th year student then a 2nd year one, though.
One of the clearest teachers I've ever had. Is extremely effective of actually explaining concepts instead of reading them off the slides. Also, the examples he uses are really interesting and practical. However, his tests can be tricky, as you really need to understand the material in order to do well. -- Julian.
Good professor, clear and interested in the material he is teaching. Lot's of material covered during the semester. Project is a good way to boost grades, as he is a good marker if you do the work.

His exam is the hardest thing I have ever seen, I went to class and studied the textbook. Absolutely brutal.
His final exam for econ 1021A is a disaster many students even not sure they will pass or not.
He's probably the rudest, most obnoxious prof i've ever had. He doesn't care about his students and goes further to tell them not to e-mail him for help. He shoved 4 lessons into our last lecture for Econ1021. His quizzes are impossible and his final exam was absolutely brutal. Read the textbook instead of even going to class.
All lecture based material, can be a bit vague so it helps to ask lots of questions. Tests and quizzes are tough
He informed the class that he would not cover the materials from textbook one day before final exam. And he gave really tricky questions on the exams. Also he said - do not expect I will response to any of your emails 3 days before the exam, and you will not receive your grade until January. Lectures are useful maybe, but exams are tough.

His finals were really really difficult. If you were an AEO, avoid him as possible as you can.
I thought he'd be a decent prof. Hated his class. His midterms were really hard and his final was ten times harder. Switch out while you still can.

On the first day of class he told us he wouldnt be teaching us all of the content for which we will be tested for. He also sets his OWN exams, and makes them INSANELY hard.

Great lectures. He was engaging and funny. Sure his exams were hard, but its economics, what do you expect? He knows his stuff and he wants you to actually understand it instead of memorizing it. Its university, thats the way it should be. Lowest mark I've received, but I felt I learned the most. I would definitely take his classes again.

His expectations are not right. He expects way too much from his students during assignments and tests given the amount of information he gives during lectures. Also he'll say things once during lectures and if you miss it, you're dead, because the textbook won't have it and he interprets things with his own opinion rather than universal knowledge
This is the worst prof I have ever had in my life. He doesn't even teach out of the textbook at all just says " be weary when reading them because I don't agree with alot of it" hardest maker in the world. He doesn't care at al for his students, no help when going in to office hours. No review questions, no solutions for textbook, NOTHING.
worst prof ever! he works as some real estate agent & uses his real life scenarios in class and tries to apply questions. He is very knowledgable but he is a horrible prof. He doesn't know how to teach bc he believes some concepts are 'common sense' and don't even try asking a question bche wont answer it properly and you will be left more confused
This course, this professor can let you feel real disappointment after you put lots of efforts on the study and lecture. When you done the quiz, you probably feel that is alright, but unfortunately it won't be when you see marks. His module is "Never shocked by questions that you have never seen before when you doing your exams. that is how I test"
Right from the first class you can tell he wants us to do well. I emailed him about an assignment question and he gave me some marks in good faith because I was very close to the correct answer. Also gave us a choice about how we preferred the format of our last couple assignments. Overall I liked his lectures, and wanted to raise his score on here
Well, he made a big joke on the final. Hardest exam ever! It is not at the same difficulty level compared with the practice that we done before. Got mad each time when time is up, and I just have no idea why. Showing off how smart he is on the exam, and I heard he did the same thing on Econ. It is like he let you fell u would pass in midterm, but..
When u r doing the final, it is like there is no difference between u put 0 efforts in or 100% efforts. Also, the suck thing is when u done your midterm, u probably feel it is not like that bad and don't need to drop, but the hardest final let u feel he helped UWO earned all tuition and failed students and let them pay again. Worst lecturer ever.
He deserved 1/5 if there is no 0/5. Can't imagine how he survived and keep teaching until today, he mentioned there is no relationship between our marks and his salary, or jobs. So it makes sense why UWO developed so many bad lectures.
A very knowledgeable person. Listen intently to his lectures; more then worth attending. btw, I appreciate an educator who supplements the textbook with their own insights and experiences. way more valuable then testing some definitions from the back of the book.

I have taken 2 courses with Kahnert and I am so disappointed to learn that he wont be teaching any of my courses next year. Neither of my grades with him have been my highest, but I have learned more in his classes than any other. His expectations are very very high, which I support if this degree is going to mean anything at all. Amazing prof.

Few students like this guy but I am not one of them. Hardest Final that I have done. Same in Econ 1021 and the other courses, always surprise students in final and let we received pretty bad marks. Also, I never heard any normal students say "WOW" with smile and appreciate him after final.

50 minute lectures makes attendance basically pointless since Kahnert speeds through the content barely elaborating beyond what you find in the textbook. Tutorials are completely useless as well. With that said, if you study the textbook, the tests are fairly straightforward (all MC) with only a handful of questions meant to trip you up.
Flies through lectures, barrage of information all at once. Would be a good prof if he had more time to teach. This course really does need more than 2 lecture hours a week, there's so much content. Basically just the textbook verbatim. He doesn't use any of the myeconlab stuff just so you know. Don't take econ unless your program requires it.
If someone likes him, I would say you must be a SB. He used to give an extremely hard final to surprise students and prove how smart he is after profs' evaluation, although he mentioned he didn't care his evaluation at all. I would say you don't need to care that because all of us give you rating starts from 1 and end at 1.
Nick is a good guy. He is easy to understand and gives A TON of hints for what to focus on for the exams/quizzes. If you show up to class, listen carefully to his hints, practice all questions assigned, there is no reason you can't get a decent mark in his class. It's a tough course and he legitimately tries to help his students who want to do well

He flies through the material so lectures are pointless, and good luck getting a reply of any value to any email you send him. His finals always have been and always will be impossible no matter how much you study. Half the exam will be things you've never seen before. Steer clear.
Professor Kahn was a great professor! He spent little time going over concepts from the reading in order to maximize time in class to go over problems. He assigns three problems sets throughout the semester where he gets most of his exam questions from. And he always responded quickly to emails when I had questions over the problem sets.
He is incredibly boring and goes through material very fast. The lectures seemed endless and painful to attend. Doesn't prepare us well for exams, and was pretty useless at explaining things in different ways during tutorial... Not my favourite.
Couldn't believe some people take Econ 300 at Western and said he is a good one? What is wrong with you and three digital code was ended couple years before, you should feel shame to say he is a good one.
The worst professor. Crams so much into 1 lecture, speaks so fast you take in nothing. For the final he emailed us telling us to know certain chapters he crammed into the last lecture and wasn't even on the exam. Not helpful at all.
Very confused by this reviews. Prof Kahnert is one of nicest professors I have had and very patient with me I learn more in his class than any other and he make me want to stay finance. I don't why so many people hate him.
Very reasonable prof for a difficult course. His exams are difficult but if you put in the work, pay attention in lecture and be diligent about the readings you will be able to make his course work for you.
His lectures were alright but were very much focused on him basically reading off of powerpoints and failing to expand past examples he had posted on them. He knew his material well but his teaching methods made class a struggle to stay focused in.
The best finance prof I ever had. I found his lectures engaging and interesting. He goes the extra mile to explain concepts and give real life examples. He made I class that I thought would be boring the most useful class I have ever taken. Please come back one day to teach MOS again professor.
Lecture is pretty good, but exam is soooo hard.
I've taken his summer intersession class and his exams are truly hard. BUT I indeed like him because he is nice and caring and wants you to learn stuffs. Maybe not a good tester but absolutely a good teacher.
Hardest prof ever. He is really easy to get mad without any reasons. He didnt let us bring the notes before you enter the exam room. He even didnt hand out the exam at that time and if you do so, he would count you cheating.
Unless you have previous knowledge in maths/finance, you're gonna have the worst time in this class. Assignments and exams are brutal, much harder than what was taught in lecture which is so unfair. Don't understand what the prof is gaining from making the course unnecessarily difficult. Drop out if you can!
Kahnert doesn't post solutions to finance questions on the lecture slides because he doesn't want to reward students who don't come to class. This makes it extremely difficult to follow along in class because you are scrambling the entire time to jot down calculations. This prof makes the course WAY more difficult than it needs to be.

hahaha I'm so so sorry if you have him. Man claims he's a "nice guy" yet told me in office hours "I need to struggle to understand concepts. I WENT TO OFFICE HOURS BECAUSE I'VE BEEENN STRUGGLING. Blink in class you might get yelled at beware. Avoid this prof at all costs, but if you HAVE to just try and laugh off the ridiculous things he expects.

answer, one would be hesitant to try in the future, when they could very well be correct. I was taken back by this practice to be, quite honestly, I found it to be quite inequitable. I also believe this teacher could better prepare his students for the evaluations and problem sets, and encourage student success instead of being detrimental to it.
I believe this instructor needs to re-evaluate his teaching and grading methods. For example, the concept of deducting points for a wrong answer is in my opinion, detrimental to student learning. The whole concept of learning is to put your best foot forward, and not to be scared to get something wrong. If we get penalized for a wrong (more below!)

This was my professor this semester. Either my own name or YouTube should have this title, because I taught myself more from tutorial youtube videos than what I learnt from him. He LITERALLY didnt teach??? How does one get away with just not providing students with lectures?? UWO should be embarrassed that this lazy man is representing them.

This was BY far the worst course I ever took at Western, and by far the worst professor/teacher I've ever had. No clue why he hasn't been fired yet, a down right mean person who wants to see students fail. Not one empathetic bone in his body. He makes this course way harder than it needs to be! I would avoid him at all costs.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Awful professor and person. Took his class and did awful on the midterm (failed) so I dropped the course. Took it the following semester with a different professor (who could teach and was not rude nor arrogant) and got an 80. Just goes to show you, its not always you, the student; sometimes it is the one teaching you.
Brutal professor. Makes 2nd year course way harder than it needs to be. arrogant. horrible teacher - better off learning on your own. ruined finance for me.
This is a tough course(dont expect 85+) but Nick is not a bad guy like some of these ratings paint him to be. If do the work an average grade is doable. He is super passionate about finance, but there is no hand holding. IMO people are misplacing their bad grades onto a guy who doesn't deserve the heat.

This class is really hard but if you get to know him, he's a very kind prof. He cares about helping his students, despite what everyone on here seems to think. I was scared of him before the course started ONLY because of these ratings - so please don't read these and get discouraged. If you're struggling in the course go talk to him, he cares.

I can see why students might not like him (has fits in lectures, difficult homework sets) but he's not necessarily a "bad" prof. This class is no joke and I think a lot of these bad ratings are a reflection of bad grades. If you go to lecture and actually pay attention you will have a much better understanding of the content.
Pay attention to the exam notes sent out by your professor, if you are unfortunate enough to break the rules on the exam, you will see him become rude and mad. Because many people used self absence reports in the midterm exam led to a more difficult final, be sure to understand the content, only focusing on the questions will help very little
Never seen a prof care more about the genuine success of students. His "outbursts" are valid. If a class is putting in an insufficient amount of effort, cheating, undeservedly expecting things he will address it in class. I think the world needs more people like Nick. You must put in the time and effort for him to provide support- no freebies.
He is the absolute worst prof that loves to lecture about how he's helping you study but doesn't prepare you for his hard work problem sets (he shows slides of numbers and assumes you know the calculations and formulas) took this course twice with him, BMOS kids good luck he's the worst
Read this if you want to do well: Basically he makes the exams ridiculously hard for the people that try getting by through memorizing the formulas. If you're confused on something get it answered right away, understanding the concepts is the key. GO TO OFFICE HOURS... focus on learning the "big picture" and the why. Went from 52->79 w this advice.

He is the only prof teaching 2310 currently and it seems he gets a power trip knowing students do not have an alternative but to take his course. His classes are bordelrine abusive the way he degrades his own students. UWO needs a new prof and this guy needs to go.
As a student who has to work to afford tuition, I try my best to keep up with the material. However, going to his class is a degrading experience; he constantly shames us for getting iClicker questions wrong, even telling us to go home. People have different learning speeds & simply not mastering the material does not make us less "sophisticated".

If you're willing to put in the work and stay on top of the course material you'll do well in this course. I can't speak about Nick in previous years, but I just took Mos 2310 in the Fall of 2022 and he was a really knowledgeable prof, who worked hard to make his lectures understandable and the content easy to understand. Go to his office hours.
Nick really is a good prof. It's just the course is hard and it's important for students to actually put in the work. you can tell Nick is really passionate about making sure his students are actually leaning the content because he constantly tells us about learning strategies and to signal to ourselves our weaknesses in the course. Recommend!
Nick is great! Anyone giving him a bad review didn't put in the work for this course and are running to ratemyprofs to affix blame and not take accountability. Every class, he does his best to prepre us to make sure we succeed. He is funny and often adds stories about his son and daughter in class which makes lecture more fun and relatable.Recommed
I think a lot of people dislike him due to his fits which he sometimes throws in class, but overall he is a very caring prof. The course content itself is pretty hard and demanding, and he expects high expectations from his students. He is very strict but he is fair. Would def recommend going to his office hours, super nice guy outside of class.
He gets a bad reputation that I don't think he deserves one bit. his class is challenging if you struggle with math, but it's not too difficult overall. he is a kind and genuine guy who cares about his student's success and wants everyone to succeed. Show up to class it makes a huge difference, he also hints at what you will be tested on.
Kahnert is a great teacher and professor. He is passionate about finance and respects the subject - which I think is why he has had notable 'outbursts' when students are not paying attention, and the reason he does not make the course as easy as some people want it to be. He also does a great job of trying to engrain professionalism in his students
Worst professor at Western. After one class with him you will understand why. MOS 2310 shouldn't be hard but with him it definitely is. You can expect to be constantly degraded for not understanding things he fails to teach. The worst part about him is who he is as a person, words cannot describe the lack of respect students have for him. Just run.
His lectures were simply exhausting. 3 hour finance lectures, and made sure he took up every second. His problem is he spends the first 1.5 hr talking about nothing and useless info, then rushes through the actual material when he realizes he doesn't have much time left.

Extremely sarcastic and strict throughout his lectures. Very unreasonable and in the first class of the semester said "your mental health is not more important than attendance, and therefore will not be an acceptable reason for missing class"
Solid professor, the content itself is difficult as it's 20 ish chapters within 12 weeks. He moves in a way where you can understand the big story and focus on the little things at home. This course requires dedication no matter the professor, so be prepared to grind at least 3-4 hours a week outside of class. He cares about how his students learn!
Solid professor. He gets a bad rap because he is hard on his students, but he wants them all to succeed. Old school style teacher, one of the few left, teaching his students to be disciplined and determined. He can be tough sometimes, but you love to see it because that shows he cares. Overall great guy and professor. Better study to pass though!
I passed with a good grade so I'm not saying this to be salty: Unproductive lectures, degrading personality, and just very inconsiderate and unapproachable. Purposely structures everything in a way that is unaccomodating and unnecessarily difficult. His exams are inconsistent with the course material and his weighting of assignments is not fair. GL
Relatively easy course, lectures are mostly useless so as the textbook. Just go over the slides and practice questions and you will be fine. He makes the course seem much harder than it actually is. Would choose another prof.

There are a lot of reviews of Nick that might scare you away but I'll tell you he's the most passionate Prof. I've had at Western and at the end of the day he just wants his students to succeed. Do your homework ON YOUR OWN, show up to class, ask questions and don't be afraid of him, he might seem scary but he's actually a really awesome guy.
Disorganized and outdated course. Quizzes hidden behind rigid rules add stress. Content focuses on outdated models like CAPM without addressing modern alternatives. Exams prioritize quick math over deep understanding. Long, inefficient 3-hour lectures rush key topics. Disappointing for such a vital subject. Needs modern overhaul and better delivery

This course wasn't that hard, but it needs to be taught by a different professor. Nick is extremely unorganized and will not post the materials required for the exam until right before. He is late in doing everything, is never posts things when he says he will and is rude in class when you ask questions. He is the most unprofessional at western
Don't be discouraged by the horrible reviews, he is tough but fair. He explains things well in lecture, and wants you to focus on the main 'story' of concepts to help you understand vs knowing formulas. Midterm was okay but the final was pretty tough. Go to every class, review weekly, study well in advance before tests, and you'll be fine!
This class is not difficult, the content is very interesting. However, the lectures are 3 hours and this professor takes way too long, and is not good at explaining the concepts well. I resorted to using online videos and the textbook to learn. He also takes way to long to make problem sets available and takes extremely long to give grades back.
Not a difficult course and honestly I really like the content but the prof MAKES it difficult by not explaining concepts in a simple manner. Purposefully takes up the full 3 hours when he could explain it in 1 hour if he just got to the point. Not approachable, speaks with a superiority complex.
This guy thinks he knows so much about finance and shares personal information to the class, grades take forever to get back, waists time during class, doesnt explain concepts well, doesnt help in office hours, wears the same clothes every day.
Takes a long time to explain concepts in class, but go cause he says what concepts will be tested. Not like other MOS courses where you can memorize, you need to ACTUALLY understand stuff. Prepare for 10+ hours/week studying to excel. Problem sets are vital for exam prep. Gives good insight into IB basics if youre interested in that too.
How to do good in this course: Go to lecture, he tells what will be on the exams. Do the practice questions from the textbook he assigns as homework, understand them. MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM SET QUESTIONS, ALL THE EXAM QUESTIONS ARE THE SAME FORMAT. You can't just remember, you MUST understand. He is chill, just has high standards.

three hour morning lectures half filled with meaningless banter about how both he and his son are better than you, and the other half filled with rushing through 2.5 chapters, ironically explaining how this is super important and you need to take your time. simply stepping into class wrong could give you missing professionalism marks. massive ego.
This professor is very enthusiastic about teaching which is the only reason I gave him a 2 instead of 1. He takes the full 3 hours for no reason which could be taught within an hour, which is due to him going off topics for no reason. He takes a very long time to reply to emails and when he does get back to you his emails are very condescending.
Don't listen to all the harsh comments. He is a good professor who genuinely cares about his students' understanding of the course material rather than just the grade they receive. I think his grading evaluation is fair, and he's good at what he does.

Honestly, if he wasn't my professor, I'd like the guy, but as a professor, he came off condescending when speaking about my exams and overall course progress, and assumes that all his students use ChatGPT when in reality I didn't, which is kinda rude tbh.
Hes like okay but be aware he will have a crash out on you. Never in my university experience have I had a prof yell at the class; and im not over exaggerating. Buddy had a full on melt down when more than half the class got an Iclicker question wrong. like i genuine crash out. Hes also so unorganized and loved to talk about himself.

Whatever you do, never ask this professor for help. He will either: a) Dock your "professionalism" grade until it's and I quote "satisfactory well below the class average." or b) Require that you come into office hours IN PERSON and that he cannot help you answer a simple question during reading week via email. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
As a student who was required to take his course, I highly recommend you do not take this class. Nick is a horrible teacher and has no regard for his students needs. He makes the tests very tough, is very unhelpful and is a mean and condescending person. He will doc your marks 100% and give you absurd reasonings why. Do not take 2310 with this POS.
Professor Kahnert is great for applied finance. I hear he is tougher on the actual finance students but for applied finance, he broke everything down really well and the pace of the class wasn't too challenging. Hes a bit of a wild guy but that makes his lectures entertaining.
Very stingy with marks. Professionalism grades if you don't email him or ask stupid questions should be 100. He gave me a 98.5; I literally never emailed him or talked to him. He crashes out a lot in class too, like a student would answer a question and he'd straight up bully the student. Avoid if you can.

Easily the worst professor I've had in my two years at Western, wouldn't wish him on my worst enemy. Lectures are completely useless unless you want to learn about how much better his kids are than you or hear about how he hates his job. He will find any possible way to dock your marks. PLEASE whatever you do, DO NOT take ANY class with him.
Course is very hard and taught in one term instead of full year like other schools, so there is heavy course load. However he is very clear and concise about what will be covered in class and exams. Use the office hours to get to know him in a professional manner, because he was very helpful to me when I needed. More so than most profs I have had.
Avoid him like you avoid your ex. I once saw him give a zero on a final because a student had her hand resting on the paper after time was up (not writing, just existing). He doesn't just lack empathy for students, I'm convinced he actively collects tears for hydration
DON'T TAKE THIS PROF. Boring lectures. Deviates a lot and talk about his personal experience majorly. Assigns lots of homework for grading (homework will be timed)!!!! Very strict and not flexible. Extreme and unbelievable rules. Too focused on penalizing students than actually helping/teaching.
Super unorganized. Reads off slides. Doesn't finish what he's saying half the time. Very, very, very rude. Belittles students in office hours.

Felt inclined to give Prof. Kahnert a fair review after seeing all these people whining. He's a tough grader, but he isn't unfair and will happily help you outside of the classroom if you come to him genuinely looking to better understand the material. Best prof I've had at Western
Does not teach the material well at all. you are left to teach yourself how to do everything through other resources. cant believe i am paying for an education like this.
Yall he is a yapper. Goes for the full three hours. When it comes to the important stuff he says them so fast you barely have time to digest. He yaps but just because you yap doesn't mean everything you say is important. Lots of hw.
Listen, people who are giving this prof terrible reviews didn't try hard enough. He can be random sometimes, but he gives you what you need to pass. The problem sets are hard, but they are good practice for the midterm and exam, and he doesn't ask questions that you have never seen before. Take his lectures seriously and do the textbook questions.
One of the strictest and worst professors you will ever come across. If you're not in Accounting, Finance, or any other program that requires 2310, don't take it. This prof will push you to the brink of insanity and grade deductions are handed out like candy whenever possible.Lectures unnecessarily with long examples containing irrelevant info.
Nick Is an awesome professor, everyone in here complaining about him just put in no effort into the course and are blaming their bad grade on him. If you actually put in the work, and go to office hours you will do well, don't be intimidated by this course.
I agree with all the bad reviews. I am sure Nick writes the good reviews.. He is the worst and i don't know why western is keeping him as a lecturer. He shouldn't be allowed to teach.
Honestly, I think this prof gets way too much hate. The course itself is challenging, but that's not because of him - it's because of the material. Most of the people giving low ratings don't even show up to lectures or put in effort. If you actually attend class and pay attention, everything he says directly helps with the exam.
Belittles u. missed a PS (ik it says not to email him)I had a panic attack and emailed letting him know I missed it and if I could see it for studying. He responded so nasty and gave me a 0 on professionalism for EMAILING HIM. How the heck does that reflect my understanding. A 0 bcs it took 2 mins of his time to read an email.
He's the devil, listen to the reviews and realize you aren't built different, his final exam will ruin you
