Nice guy, but extremely hard tests--no mult. choice EVER, hard paper grader too
nice guy.. class is soooo boring.. and he grades the papers unbelieable hard..
very bad lecture class, grades hard
Lots of NOT fun field trips and long pointless readings!
Nice guy, knows his stuff, very tough grader but its worth it if you like histor
extremely hard grader, loses things, boring class, corny jokes...
good guy, bad jokes, gives you essay quest. for test, but hard grader
nice guy, but hard grader. Work hard and you'll do well
Nice guy, hard grader, BORING field trips, never hands things back
bad grader&person.doesnt hand back stuff.dull.sarcasm.unhelpful.dont ask 4 help
Expects one to GO DEEPER into essay questions, avoid class!
BORING AND THE HARDEST GRADER, EXPECT YOU TO WRITE EVERY DETAIL TO ESSAYS, AVOID
i thought i was in an english class - very tough grader - nice guy, good class, but definitely do a rough draft of papers for him to look at!
Amazing class, learned a lot, grades very fairly and gives you a great opportunity for improvement
Very hard grader. He expects every detail to be perfect in essays and he does not understand personal reasons for missing class. If you miss more than 2 he starts killing your grades. Grade wise i got an A but attendance put me to a C+. He's too hard.
Good teacher, encourages class discussions and willing to answer questions. Do the assigned reading before class and you're fine. Very detailed oriented when it comes to grading essays and papers, tells you ahead of time what will be on tests.
hard grader... very detail oriented. its a freshman course! needs to ease up.
For a core class that freshmen have to take, it's ridiculous. Can't get a good grade for your life. REALLY BORING...laughs at his own jokes, AVOID
Funny teacher. Makes class enjoyable. Not a hard 300 level class. Stupid homework reading assignments. Young, so he relates well with students. Cares. Doesn't give out papers in a timely fashion.
Very funny, makes 8am class interesting. class is great prep for capping. As for the origins students who think its "too hard" for a freshman class... you're in college now, get used to it.
Prof. Marshall is a great guy. Class was a lot of fun and I enjoyed going. One comlplaint is that he grades writing very hard and there are only a few assignments so that can affect you a lot. But, none the less, good class.
I love nick marshall! Great guy, great class. Hard grader, but if you're smart you shouldn't have a problem. Very fair and good stories.
Great man and a great teacher. Grades hard but if you put time into the class you won't have a problem. Test Questions are given before the test.
Great guy, good teacher. Grades hard but if you study alot its not a problem. Overall a good teacher who will help you ifyou need it.
knows his stuff- so long as you take decent notes in class, you're set. makes you read boring franklin memoir, but otherwise homework isn't bad. tells you exactly what will be on his tests. if you actually study, then no reason you can't get a B at least in his class. learn lots so take him!
Hardest teacher I've ever had. His attention to detail is ridiculous, he expects you to pretty much remember everything he says for tests and papers or else he takes points off. Grades like an english teacher. You'll learn alot, but who cares about that if you're getting rough grades.
This class was ridiculous. He was rarely there to teach it and we spent the majority of our time in a lecture with other professors who had no say over how we were being graded. He grades so hard and there would be no problem with that if he ever showed and to explain what he expects his own class to know. Only good thing: he looked like Bob Saget
He expects you to just magically know the material without him actually ever teaching it. Instead, you spend 99% of the class in a lecture hall with ignorant professors who **** for an hour an fifteen minutes about absolutely nothing. You won't learn anything valuable in this class and you will have a horrible gpa.
he's awesome! he is definately a tough grader but if you study and listen to what he says in lecture its fine. He gives review sheets for tests, so use it!!! If youre interested in American History, hands down i would say take him!!
Awesome teacher. Knows entirely too much about the HRV. Takes you on cool field trips, brings in his guitar and sings the Erie Canal song... tests are fine if you study and he gives you advance warning on what to study. All essays. You buy a lot of little, inexpensive books that are all interesting. Definitely recommend him!
All history majors who are thinking about getting a higher ed. in history, museum studies etc. TAKE HIS CLASSES. His drive for quality papers and research will prove beneficial in the end! His SEX DEATH AND DISEASE class rocked...treated like a masters student! Really nice guy!
HE AWESOME! Although a tough teacher and grader, you learn alot. Makes material interesting and he's really helpful. You don't waste your money on the textbooks, you read every page!
He's a really cool guy, but a tough and very unfair grader. Even if you work hard, he takes off a lot of cheap points on the tests. Take him if you must, but beware.
An incredibly knowledgeable professor. He provided important and significant details during lectures. I would highly recommend to anyone who is interested in American History. His lectures were very entertaining and yet provided a wealth of information.
he is sexy!!
Great guy and knows his stuff. He is really funny, however his essays are really hard and he grades really hard. I thought I wrote an A paper, he gave me a C-.
It's all well and good that he was a funny guy and class was interesting, but his grading was over the top. Extremely nitpicky for grammar in papers. Meeting with him to discuss my paper didn't even help bring my paper grade over a B-. I tried to improve on his specific suggestions between my first and second paper, and my second grade was lower.
There is no way to get a good grade in his class, he is too hard of a grader. I took him for themes and he grades papers as if this is a 400 level english class. I could have sworn that I wrote at LEAST a B paper and I was given a c-
Don't take this class. It will ruin your GPA and no matter how hard you try he will give you a bad grade. Way too tough of a grader.
Great class lots of interesting conversations, you aveto do the readings though, but they are good books.
Marshall is a highly intelligent instructor, but he is overly pompous and condescending to students and is not helpful to students. The work load in all of his courses is comparable to a capping course. The only way to get an A in his class is writing a extremely erudite doctoral dissertation.
Although Marshall is very smart, he is an extremely harsh and inflexible instructor. Most students end up getting Cs and Ds in the following courses: American History I Sex Death and Disease and Themes In Modern History. Take Dr. Steven Garabedian who is a more worthy challenge and has reasonable expectations.
Dr. Marshall assigns an excessive amount of work which could hinder a student's success in a capping course. Instead of assigning 7 books, he should follow Dr. Woolner's method of assigning 3 books for a 300 level course and distribute supplemental handouts.
A lot of work, but really interesting and create class discussions. Only take it if you are a history major/are really interested in the topic.
Good guy, fair but tough grader. Know your stuff for the midterm and final, tough paper grader, do all the reading. But great guy, makes class interesting, funny, helpful
Teaches at a graduate level course which is unfair for a core requirement class. Very difficult on grading. No textbook. You read novels that are loosely based on the material. Nice guy, but needs to stay away from the undergrads. Stay away from this class.
He's an awesome guy but he is tough. I love his class the most and I was interested in history before. He cracks jokes and is prepared to help when needed. Pay attention in class and do the readings, it'll benefit you in the long run. I would totally take another class with him.
I think he grades fairly or even softly. The kind of papers I usually get C's on I get B's on from him. I've found the class entertaining and I think he's a nice and funny guy. I've heard he's really tough in his other classes though. I can't confirm that, but I recommend his capping class for sure.
The hardest grader! i'm usually a student that receives good grades. But its impossible for majority of the people in the class to get an amazing grade. He expects you to read hundreds of pages a night and understand the material by heart. I was excited to go into the class and be a history major but he has discouraged me. He's not worth having.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! He was unclear about assignments, a very tough grader, and assigned many readings and essays
Really nice guy and an enjoyable class, but a very tough grader. Don't think anyone in my class got an A. I did have fun throughout the semester though. Good amounts of reading, a few papers, a presentation and final. Marshall definitely helped me improve my writing skills though and I'm glad that I took the class because he made it fun
Prof Marshall has a good sense of humor and actually made class enjoyable. As for the work, he expects you to read and understand way too many pages for almost every class. He is a tough grader but is also willing to help and he encourages students to come to his office hours. Overall, the class was interesting yet challenging.
Dr. Marshall is an outstanding professor. He made Sex, Death, and Disease so much fun (regardless of how much work was required for the class). The readings were all so interesting that made the work every week enjoyable. Class discussions were always hilarious. Definitely take a class with this guy. He's the best.
Such an awesome guy! Class was always hilarious and he really knows his stuff. There are a few papers, but as long as you do the readings and go to his office hours for help, you'll do great. I would take a class with Dr. Marshall again if I could!!!
Dr. Marshall is one of the best professors at Marist. He makes class humorous, enjoyable, and truly knows what he is talking about. He expects a lot from his students. He will always be happy to look at work before deadlines and give feedback, and has no problem giving an extension. He really pushes you to earn your A. I would recommend him highly.
Dr. Marshall is hands down one of the best professors at Marist. He is funny, incredibly intelligent, and extremely helpful. He wants you to succeed, and will help you with your goals. Reading is important, and papers should be well written. He is also incredibly handsome. 10/10 on the looks category
Prof. Marshall was one of the best professors I took at Marist! Be warned, there is SO MUCH READING! Most of it is very interesting, and the backbone of the class is discussion on said readings in the next class- not much lecture, the class is driven by what students got out of the reading assignments. Keeps you whole time for a 3 hr night class.
He is a great guy, don't get me wrong. but he is a insanely harsh grader. He assigns an insane amount of reading and beware of a pop quiz every single class. Otherwise, hes a good guy and i can see why people like him. very funny.
He is unclear about what he wants in any essay. Compared to other FYS classes, his FYS is so much work. Plz don't take this class, if you have him, good luck.
Dr. Marshall is super nice, helpful, and really funny. He gives lots of reading and quizzes on the reading. The quizzes are super easy if you read. He gives a few papers and is a hard grader. Overall he was a great professor
Absolutely adored his class. He is extremely well rehearsed in what he is teaching and makes lectures extremely interesting through tangents and making connections. Does encourage people to take notes on paper instead of using tech but does not forbid it. It definitely helps that he is extremely likable and funny. It makes the material memorable.
Was a tough grader and you have to read a LOT. He's a great guy tho. He is very funny and i always looked forward to going to his lectures.
Dr. Marshall was definitely good at lecturing, however, there was so much reading for a FYS class. With presentations and papers, he wasn't always clear with what he expected, but he is still a good professor nonetheless.
Dr. Marshall was very lecture heavy, however, he is absolutely hilarious. He keeps students engaged and his lectures aren't boring whatsoever. He is very lenient and will give you an extension on a paper if needed. He is however a very tough grader. 2 papers, midterm, final. Lots of reading, there's a quiz every class on the readings, they're easy.
The best professor I've had! Excellent lectures and really engaging.
dude takes himself way to seriously. acts like a high school teacher and makes every minute that you take a class with him miserable.
Dr. Marshall is the best professor. He makes lectures enjoyable and is passionate about history, which helped me to stay engaged. However, he is a tough grader, and it is difficult to get an A. Also, beware that this class has tons of reading...more work than other FYS classes. Overall, I would recommend this class because of how enjoyable it was.
Marshall's classes are very demanding but he is a great person. He catches you off-guard with humor and wants you to succeed. Tough grader on papers but he is willing to work with you so you understand it. Know your stuff for midterm/final. Quizzes are fairly straightforward but you must do the readings even if some of them are long.
I had professor Marshall for my first year seminar class. He was engaging and funny which always made class interesting. The topics covered are also cool, which is why the readings were very doable, however there are a lot of readings. He is flexible and will do what he can to help. I would definitely recommend for FYS.
Marshall is very funny and engaging. While his FYS class is a history class he picks very interesting readings for us which makes the lectures something to look forward to every class. He goes give a LOT of reading, however, and the essays he assigns can be tough, but if you participate you should be fine. Wish I could take another class with him.
Dr. Marshall is awesome. I looked forward to going to class because of him. Class was all discussion based off of the readings he would assign. We would have a quiz each class but they were easy. He was really helpful in office hours and helped me develop ideas for my papers and talk out concepts. I wish I could take another class with him.
He's one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's a fantastic person, and his classes are enjoyable to go to. There are a lot of pop quizzes for seminars, but they're simple: just do the work. Engage and be present, and you'll enjoy this class just as much as I did!
Terrible! Accused my entire class of using AI on our midterms which isn't even possible because the midterm was written IN PERSON ON PAPER, not online. Long, boring lectures with no slides to help. Also doesn't allow laptops which is ridiculous when you NEED to take notes on what he's saying since there's no slides and the readings aren't relevant.
Do not take him unless you are a English or History major. Note which one I listed first. His writing assignments seem easy enough and then he is the toughest grader. It is just unnecessary. I have never received such low grades on essays in my life. My grades definitely did not reflect the effort I put into them or the quality of my papers.
Dr. Marshall is a great professor and you can learn a lot from him as long as you put in the work!
Amazing lecturer. A harsh grader on papers, but gives super good feedback to improve your writing. He is also a great help when writing papers and offers extensions so you write a good paper too.
Made class interesting and engaging. Often included persona stories to connect them to lessons which was entertaining There are readings due every class and some of them could be quite long. There are also quizzes on the readings almost every class, but they are pretty easy if you do the readings. I enjoyed the class and he's a great professor.
I had this teacher in my FYS in autobiography American all we did was ready book and gave many quizzes on said books. Very quiz and essay heavy if you are good are read comprehension might be an ok class. Would not take again.
He doesn't allow the use of laptops. gives good lectures, he funny and engaging.
Does a quiz on the readings: literally writing a sentence relating to what you read. Good lecturer, fun and engaging. Exams are solely essays; just analyze the key themes he goes over and really back up your points with the history. I do wish he had more graded work. He played the guitar in class once and passed out cotton. Talks the full class tho
Dr. Marshall is another history professor whom you'll love if you love history. He goes on a lot of tangents, but he's so kind and educated in his subject.
Dr. Marshall is a very energetic and humorous professor. His lectures are engaging and enjoyable, and the exams are not difficult—they mostly cover the material discussed in class. When I reached out to him for help, he responded positively and was very supportive. I'm grateful for his guidance and approachability.
Loved his class even though I didn't do the best. I wouldn't take his class as a GPA boost, but I would 100% recommend him. The content wasn't hard, but the exams had very confusing questions. I don't think anyone in my class got higher than a C on the exams. I would definitely take a class with him, he's very invested in his students.
Marshall isn't a bad pick. He's funny and engaging, but he's a pretty tough grader for the three exams. As long as you pay attention, do the readings, and take good notes, you'll do well enough.
While I felt the work was incredibly challenging for a 101 class, I still loved every second of Marshall's lectures. He's very educated on history, and you can tell he really cares for every one of his students. He goes on a lot of tangents, but they are always relevant to the topic of discussion. Don't let the subject deter you, his class is fun
Lectures are always insightful and informative. Tough grader on the writing assignments but overall an easygoing class with a passionate and hilarious professor. The readings are very interesting if you enjoy history. Just make sure you actually do the readings or you probably won't do well.
Great guy but can be strict. Knowledgeable and passionate about history. Grade from 3 in-class papers, easy reading quizzes, and a final presentation. Readings matter for papers. Tough but fair, strict on tech. Funny and gets to know students. More of a history than lit class. Rewarding challenge. Do the readings and you'll be fine and learn a lot
