He expects everyone to know french off the bat. He doesn't explain well at all. He's not that friendly. He goes super fast. Don't take his class.
I had to drop the class halfway into it because, no matter how hard I tried, I could never keep up with his pace. It seemed most of the class felt the same way because half the class dropped and the other half complained about him when he was not in sight
There is a reason why very few people finish his classes... The administration should do something here and maybe their French program would take off.
Difficult instructor. Do exercises before he covers them in class so you can keep up. Remember it is a 5 credit class and a lot of work if you expect to do well. Has a sense of humor if you can pick up enough French to understand him.
Dr. Martin gives many test but you will parle vous Francias. His lesson are good but hard. Be prepared to learn French
He is very knowledgeable about French literature and history. Does not spend a lot of time on the grammar, so take good notes when he mentions grammatical items. If you ask, he's more than happy to explain. Students having problems need to speak up!
Really knows his stuff. Mine of information about French arts and culture. Expects hard work but he'll give you in information as much as you give in effort. Lots to learn but I'm trying to take diligent notes!! Good on grammar too.
I took his class for an intro to college, I had THREE years of french in high school, never above a b adverage, and i had to drop out. I was one of the few that even lasted. It says its an intro to french, but its more like french 3
This is a great teacher. I think that all the people who took this class and thought it was HARD just don't study enough. You have to want to do well in his class to do well. Just do the assigned reading and homework and this class is a breeze. Really.
He is a very hard and unfriendly teacher. A PHD in French doesn't mean he knows how to teach French. He expects you know everything before you come to the class. I would rather take French 1 online but there is none.
He is a tough teacher, but I think he is how a college teacher SHOULD be. He's not there to hold your hand through the course. The people who complained were probably not prepared for college. If you want to learn French, he will teach you!
He expects you to know frech, if we knew french we wouldn't be taking the class. And he is mean.
He is a great teacher. A little bit hard on tests but extremely good at teaching! If you really want to learn french take his classes, they're pretty fun too.
I took three years of French in high school and I am fluent in Spanish, but his class was dificult. Expects you to know the material before you even come in to class. Begining French means just that... Begining! I would not take his class again.
He's such a good teacher, very fast paste though. His tests are his lectures, so if you have good notes, you shouldn't have any probles geeting an A. It is also good not no missed any classes! He flirts a lot too, so becareful to those cuties.
Goes too fast. In my class, at the beginning we were ~30, at the end, only 6 ppl lasted. No smooth introducion of french. Class totally in french, no systematic way of teaching. You could pass it by reading the book and attending the lect. before the test
I think he was one of the least inspiring teachers I have ever had. He is not helpful at all and his teaching skills were offensive.
Not very helpful. Belittles you. Arrogant. Confusing as a teacher. Got A in his class, but not because of him. Does he still drive that silly convertible?
I never complain and get A's... but he is the worst teacher i've EVER had!!! Mean, called the class stupid, expects you to know things in the first day, moves too fast, and 85% of the class dropped.Shames PCC and all people in the teaching profession!
He is the most obnoxious ****. He calls himself french. What a disgrace. He teaches with fear and intimidation. Disgrace to the PCC. They should definitely get rid of him!!!!!!!He should not be able to teach ever again.
He favors the students who take good notes, study hard, and actually want to know French. He is not interested in helping those who do not study, or who ask questions that the homework has already answered. He can be perceived as mean, but I think he is tired of nonsense from students. He's fair.
What a jerk. The syllabus, book, everything all in French...for a beginning class. Goes to fast. Does not explain anything. I know being a teacher can be hard, but he should quit. He cannot teach. He is combative in class and not helpful. I REALLY wanted to learn French but he ruined that.
i wouldn't recommend him for a beginners class. but for french 3 or 4, i think he's an excellent teacher. he's very bright, knowledgable, and an interesting man, but i could see how he wouldn't have too much patience for beginers, which sux--take him down the road....
I took 3 yrs of French in HS and always did well. I took his beginners class and had to drop it near the end of the semester. Half the class dropped. I'm not kidding when I say he is so difficult, esp in the fact that he has NO clarity whatsoever. I was aware of all his poor ratings before but thought I could hack it. But it's all true...
Truly a very terrible teacher. He does not help you at all because he refuses to speak English. The whole elementary French text book is in French and he explains nothing. I really would not recommend anyone taking his class. Unless you already know some French, you'll probably end up dropping.
This man is a Dinasaur! Even the other staff members say he should retire. In the Olympics for swimming back in the day...which was a long long time ago. Take him if you're brilliant in French and don't mind teaching yourself. 90% of grade is based on Tests.

he's a cute lil french man and has a mini guillotine.....so cute
at first, i thought he had a stick up his ass. i'm still intimidated by him, but he's a teacher who challenges you. you have to prepare for each class session, but you learn the material inside out. it' sonly week three i think and i'm somewhat okay speaking wise and great reading wise. you just gotta do your part.
He goes fast, but if you pay attention in the class, it is not that hard. The exams are easy, its almost all by memorizing stuff from the book. He asks pretty funny questions and he flirts a lot so he picks his favorites but it doesnt mean that he doesnt give a chance to anybody else. He does and he cares, because he wants the student to get an A and do good. We do the exercises in class and don't have to show that we did it. It can get pretty boring, specially if you are going to take it three times a week
If you like french take him, he goes around class and asks a lot of questios. Make sure you know your stuff, if you don't, forget it. He is a dinosaur, seriously. Geesh. He is kind of funny at times, but he acts as though you know french already, if you're in french 1, don't know how i managed :l
This man knows his literature. Class wasn't so hard since I was more advanced but he can be a huge challenge for people that don't have strong command in the language. But I was dissapointed b/c he wasn't much help in grammar and mainly corrected mistakes & didn't go into lessons. Good exposure to French, nice person, but there are better profs.
EXCELLENT TEACHER
so far so good ... first day was packed but now that a lot of people left ... we can get started on french! He cracks a lot of jokes... pretty cool
I've taken two French classes before Martin's, and I'm getting A's, but this man is terrible to the students who need the most help. He degrades the class, plays favorites, and seems to try to make 3/4 of the class go away. Culling the weak if you will. If you're anywhere but at the top of the class, you'll be miserable.
Very poor instructor for a beginners French class. He continually berates his students and has no patience with beginners. He seems to enjoy watching his students struggle and fail and makes no effort to help them. 3/4 of the class has dropped out. It is a really bad learning enviroment for a beginning french student.
Martin was the best french teacher i have ever had! he has a funny little accent and a saecastic sense of humor. he loves students who participate and know what to say when he asks you a question. his tests were very easy, especially if you studied and payed attention in class. so yeah, he's great!!
HE HAS A VEY SARCASTIC SENSE OF HUMOR, YOU LEARN A LOT IN THIS CLASS, BUT YOU BETTER STUDY AND BE PREPARED FOR EACH CLASS OTHERWISE HE WILL MAKE YOU FEEL REALLY STUPID AND STRESSED
Not an easy class, but he's a great teacher and you really get a good foundation in French grammar
He doesn't need to be teaching Elem. French. He is way to harsh on his grading and very "old school" in his teaching style. He has some serious control issues and takes it out on his students. This is why when their is a full class the first day and only 6 students who stick it out. If you need to take his class, suggest you sign up for no grade.
Prof knows Frenc but is just going through the motions. He doesn't review pronounciations enough. I still don't know how to say 1-10 in French! He doesn't make sure the students in his class fully understand the lesson. He insists we answer his exam quesions in complete sentences yet he NEVER WRITES COMPLETE SENTENCES on the blackboard! Avoid him.
He's a hard teacher and expects students to keep up with him. He's hilarious but he shouldn't be teaching elemantary French. Just do all of the homework and keep up with the reading and you'll do fine. And answer any question he asks you even if you don't know cause he gets mad and he likes to embarass you if you don't answer him.
this teacher is a complete bozo...hes completely full of himself. he expects you to answer all the questions on his first test on the first week. His tests are extremely difficult for a beginner french course. I was maintaining a B in the class up until he drops me from the class one day cuz i missed more than 3 classes. ****..............
He is the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. It is supposed to be a French 1 class and he dose not speak English, or do any kind of teaching for that matter. If you want to learn or pass sdo not take this. I took Italian in Italy and it was not this hard, this French one is more like French 3. Also, when you ask questions or say you are lost
I would only recoment his class for people who have to previous experience in the subject because he moves pretty fast and hardly ever writes things on the board. This guy is really interesting though. Ask him about his life and be amazed at what he has been through.
He is the perfect teacher for the serious student of French. If you want to learn French for "casual conversation" then try a different teacher. He is tough but many students are lazy and he won't accept that. Work hard and you'll do fine. (I think he is funny!)
Monsieur Martin was fabulous. Yes, he may seem mean, but he can really open up to you. I managed a B+, like a couple pts away from an A. But, I took his class while I was in high school, so stop complaining! The guy is mean for a reason and it's usually b/c u didnt do ur hw. His technique works, u do learn. So, big props to him... he's cool.
Very good and not difficult if you do your homework before the class as he suggested. I do that and I'm fine. Very strict on the attendance and he'll drop you if you miss too many classes. Half of the class doesn't make the effort and I predict they'll get the guillotine. :))Stop complaining and start studying. He's funny and intelligent. Merci!
He's OK but the textbook is in French. All of it, even the grammar is explained in French. :(( How can one understand? Change the damn textbook!!!
Hard but you'll know the language/grammar rules (in your dreams)and this is the most important thing. He forces you to study, if you don't you fail. If you do it you rock. 5 tests ,4 compositions, a take home exam+final.36 students= first day,10=last day. Do you want to learn French or do you want an easy grade, a mediocre prof. and an empty brain?
I took it over summer and it was pretty hard. He is very precise and you learn alot of grammar and corrects you for mispronouncing things. He even corrects the textbook for being grammatically incorrect. He is pretty hard but a good teacher if you are willing to study and put effort into the class.
Extremely good teacher if you pay attention in the class!
Worst teacher at PCC!! Do not take his class unless you have taken a few years of french in high school. The only people that did not drop his class had 2 + years of high school french. The ENTIRE class and textbook is in french so it is almost impossible for the beginner.
Horrible teacher. Text is all in french and he gives vague and incomplete explanations like he's in his own world. On the first day he expected you to answer in french to french questions he asked - without explaining what he's even saying. He'd give that "why aren't you answering?" look while he waited for a response. Illegible handwriting too.
He is really nice if you talk to him and he sees that you are trying your best. I speak French now (and I know the grammar rules inside and out!)This is college, he's not going to make it easy on you. Sorry if you are used to being treated like a baby.
This man is endlessly amusing - grumpy, old, ludicrously French. If you can't manipulate the language and speak it proficiently on your first day, he WILL ridicule you. He's a complete (but hilarious) terror, but totally manageable if you've had prior experience with the language. Avoid if you have not; he'll make you cry.
He goes way to fast & expects you to catch it right away. He calls on everyone so if you don't understand you'll have the embarrassment of everyone knowing. He doesn't check the wrkbk HW but he goes over it in class, so if you're looking for a grade on that don't bother. It's all about the tests which don't have anything to do with the book.
He knows his language and has plenty of knowledge of culture and customs, which adds to the learning of any language. Recommended for French 3 or French Literature. Unfortunately, he DOES NOT tone it down for his French 1 class. He talks mostly in French within the first few days, and is abrasive to those who slack off. Strong but harsh teacher.
Good teacher, although I really think anybody without previous French knowledge will be totally lost. Honestly, if you need a language, don't take French because it's pretty difficult.
Hard prof, Speaks 85% french. I took 2 years of french in high school and got an A in his class. Also, best for auditory learners (oral teaching). Rarely, write on the board. Basically, teach yourself from the book. Do not recommend this prof if you had no previous knowledge of French, but if you are up for the challenge, TAKE HIM
Quite hard, potter or pedrini is easier. Still a nice guy
It?s important that your interest level in this class is extremely high. He is a tough professor, but in my opinion he just wants you to learn the language. I never had any previous experience with French and I got an A in the class. Best bet is to study the book and the examples in it, don?t get too creative on the compositions, and go to class.
I love this prof. Despite his serious (almost to the point of being rude)attitude, there's a streak of hilarious sarcasm. You must study and he will pose questions to you at every class session so do the homework and practice. He is a awesome prof and I learned so much from taking his class. Merci beaucoup, Prof. Martin
Prof. Martin is one of the best language professors I've ever had. Granted, his class was difficult, but he has extreme passion for the language and French history. Just study.
The best! I took him for French I and I've had a lot of fun. The next professors = a joke comparing to Dr. Martin. Now I'm in French 4 at a different college and still use his grammar tips and sheets. Because of him I changed my major (in French), Ce type est décidément formidable!:)) A++
I absolutely love professor Martin! I learned so much from his class. I must warn you though, THIS IS A TOUGH CLASS, but he such a fascinating person and has the best stories. His teaching style is incredibly difficult, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is not familiar with a romance language. If you do though, take him he's awesome!
He is the most interesting man in the world. Take him.
I abosolutely was fascinated with French until I came to this class. He is so frustrating I constitently have a headache and fear I'll get an anorism because of how much I am frustrated. Take this class if you want to teach yourself because he's awful at teaching students who have no prior knowledge of French and likes to make you look like a fool.
He is a very good teacher. If you don't already have a good foundation in French 1 and 2, don't take him for French 3 or 4. This course is for serious learners who actually want to LEARN the language and are not present for just the credit. He really wants to share with you and teach you the beautiful French language and culture.
He is humorous if you can understand his jokes.A delightful professor who really loves the french language.Dr.Martin likes water-polo and all sports really. If you talk to him and are serious about French,he is really nice and will become a good friend.Pay attention in class, ask questions if something is not understood, read, attend class and easy A.
Professor Martin is a nice professor who's willing to help his students. His class is not as hard as the ratings rated him to be...If you get an A from the beginning to the end, you don't have to take the final, which I think it's pretty awesome, but the final itself wasn't as hard anyways...just don't fall behind and you'll do fine in the class.
I had absolutely NO knowledge of French and he made this class HELL for me. He really doesn't give you a break. I studied my butt off in this class and he didn't cut me any slack. Seriously, i'm warning you don't take this class if you have no prior knowledge of french...BUT he was an interesting man and is very knowledgable in french.
The class is pretty easy, just pay attention and go over the chapters before/after class then you'll have no problem. The prof for this class is pretty nice, he was a bit intimidating at first since he kept talking/asking questions in french, but you'll get use to it later. He's a very nice guy and has good knowledge of French.
Wow he is horrible if you don't know any French. There are those who already have prior knowledge who like to show off in class too and make you feel dumb because you didn't take French in High School.
On the first day of class, you'll be thinking "Is this French 1???"
I had no knowledge in French and I got an A in this class. He is a very helpful/nice prof, he gives lots of extra credits!he always asks stuff in French, but u'll learn a lot from this class! and if u want to learn something, of course you have to put efforts in it! this is a college level class, so dont expect to slack off and get a good grade!
I'm not sure what's not to like. He's charming, funny, and exceedingly smart. Of course, he's going to make it worth your time (and money!), so if you're looking to slack off, don't bother taking him. Also, you will be expected to know your stuff, like, I don't know.. grammar! I learned a lot and look forward to being back with him in French 3.
He is super cool if you give him a chance. I go swimming with him in summer. He loves it when students ask questions. He is not very patient when he asks you a question but don't take it personally. It's a Hungarian thing. I enjoy his humor and friendship.
He's alright.
he knows French but not teaching. Very strict about attendance. Don't take him if you don't already know French.
Worst teacher ever!! He is wasting our money. He is not clear on lecture and expect you know everything he says. If you dont understand his questions, he will just skip you without any explanation!
Nick is the best coach I have ever played for in 23+ years
1st class," Je m'appelle Dr. Martin, et vous?" My name is Dr. Martin, and you? He did this many times and students responded with their names. If you need high school French for that then you should go back to high school! Duh
If you need high school French for this class then you should go back to high school. Learning how to count, state your name or simple grammar should not stump all of you!
If you have no prior knowledge of french do not take the class, i repeat DONT TAKE THE CLASS!!! i took 2 years in high school about 5 yrs ago so i had forgotten everything and lets just say it was a headache, hes a very nice professor but his way of teaching is complex he expects you to know everything and doesn't really go in detail
For most students, language classes aren't easy. You're gonna work. Martin is kind, helpful, and exacting. There is not much time for DRILLING -- too much to learn -- so you must practice on your own. He has encyclopedic knowledge of French lit. Grammar explanations could be clearer. Expectations are clear. A good professor.
I am so excited to be able to rate Dr. Martin, whom I had for French in the 1970s. He is an awesome professor, and is energetic, interesting and challenging. I wish that I still lived in the area. I would take a class from him again.
Professor Martin was the best teacher I have ever had in any subject. I took French 4 at PCC to finish my Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Arizona. I was going through a tough time in my life, I have had two hip replacements from an automobile accident. At this time I was only 29 years old. Now, I hadn't had French in 4 years so
I thoroughly enjoyed my classes with Professor Martin: he's smart, interesting, and knows the French language. Great stories about his trips to Paris where he met famous writers by chance in cafés and had brief conversations with them. Sadly, Professor Martin passed away in March of 2019. RIP.
