You have to take notes. But good luck doing that, because you will never, ever get all of the information on the slide before he goes to the next one, and he won't go back. Also, none of them are online. You have to fill in gaps in your notes with the book. Nightly homework, as well, on an online app that costs a ridiculous amount. Just not good.
He is condescending and acts like he is far superior to the students. He can't seem to be bothered to slow down long enough to take a question. By far the worst professor I have ever had. He doesn't seem to care about the students at all and seems to live in his own little world.
Professor mowad was condescending from the moment he passed out his syllabus. You can tell he knows a ton about philosophy and clearly has a passion for it. However, there's no passion in his lectures or will to help you understand. Assignments are all posted for you on the first day of class, but beware because there will be no talk of papers.
If you read the books, and pay attention in lecture, you'll do fine. I didn't find him to be condescending, or rude at all. He comes in ready for discussion among the class, and likes to debate over ethics. If you and your peers participate in talks, it's a fun class.
Lectures are taken right from book. learn more from homework then class. Professor is easily side tracked and spends to much time on simple examples. Give the same amount of time he gives on one in-class examples as he does for the tests. The class it-self I enjoyed and is not that difficult... however this professor is one of the worst i ever had!
This professor does not set you up to succeeds. Online quiz on reading before class when you haven't had a chance to ask questions over the concepts being quizzed on. Kicks you out of class if you don't have your mandatory response to daily reading. Focused more on you doing the work than you learning the material.
mowad is such a quiet person that the whole class has to be silent in order to hear him. he gives tests often and theyre made to confuse you. I was really interested in philosophy until I went into his boring class. he doesn't put the power point online either. so you have to use the book or take really good notes
Homework every night and you do the same thing in class every day, so if you don't read and do the homework, don't even show up. Only talks about homework questions and will not help you with any clarification. Does very little teaching. He is very dry and condescending. Would not take a class taught by him again.
Be ready for some confusing terms and hard tests. Not to mention homework every night you have class.
Very dry person, the hardest class I've ever taken in my life. He's pretty straight forward and helps you during class, but if you need extra help get a tutor
I get it, it's philosophy, it's going to be a lot of debates and work. But Professor Mowad has to be the twin of that one teacher from Ferris Bueller's Day Off who was calling attendance. His homework was incredibly stressful to find, understand, and complete, lectures are dry and boring, and tests... good luck. Please take any other professor.
I would not recommend this professor. Taking his online class is stressful if you struggle with understanding complex concepts. Forget seeking other sources to help you understand, he actually discourages and explicitly states not to do so. Basing off all your knowledge for a class based off a single text book isn't a class. Take another teacher.
Meah, I would not recommend this class. Mr. MoWAD is difficult to hear in class and is a bit passive aggressive. He gave me the sense that he feels people have been out to get him and it reflects in the way he treats his students - he does not set them up for success.
Completely Apathetic to the real word in which his students live in, makes everything far more difficult and confusing than it has to be with Alpia and his attendence policy. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A GOOD GRADE
Tough class, but good material. Pay attention in class and ask questions. You'll be alright.
Terrible class!!! Never will use the material in real life. He doesn't even know his own material so it is confusing. If your skip you will not pass . Do not take this if you want an A!!
Dr. Mowad asks for tok much in one assignment. I get philosophy is a complex study, but he does nothing to help. You're basically on your own. Grade depends on a few discussions and a lot of quizzes worth A LOT of points for only being 5 questions. I wouldn't take this professor, it's easier to fail the class than it is to pass it.
The oder in which he taught the sections was great. However, he does not live in line with what he argues. His pessimism was very off-putting and quite shocking. I would recommend this class if you want a clearer understanding of your morals but be prepared and open minded.
Terrible at explaining. He speaks like a philosopher using terminology that nobody can understand unless they are very familiar with philosophy courses. Everyone was confused at my table. Asking him questions leads to odd answers that give more uncertainty. Very picky grader, seems to forget we don't have a doctorate in philosophy like he does.
I really enjoyed this class! As long as you do all of the work and spend a decent amount of time on the papers and portfolios you will get an easy A. He explained difficult concepts very well and made it fun and relatable. I am taking one of his classes next semester as well because I loved his class so much!
He does the best with what his subject is. If you pay close attention during the lectures and ask questions Is should be no problem. Occasionally he says something really funny in a dry humor kind of way. Was generous with my class and always asking if everyone got it or if he needed to review material. Don't stay silent, say yes if you need it!
If you have a choice don't choose him. His discussion post prompts take an hour to decode and search in the dictionary. Like we get it you wasted half ur life in college but like at least talk like a normal human being.
If you want to read a huge book with small font about who knows what then this is the class for you. I was actually super excited about this class until I took it. This class only consists of really hard discussions and quizzes, and if you dont do good on either of those then you arent passing the class. He is a tough grader & does no lectures
I wouldnt take this class again
he is knowledgeable in philosophy but he cant teach it very well. could not understand this class at all, was VERY stressful from the beginning . You need to STUDY hours a day , so many rules and guidelines that must be followed in order to understand this curriculum. Did not use the book, we just needed the access code in order to do homework
I took the online course and was loving the course and the work, but online was not for me specially when I fell behind due to family matters. But he understood and allowed me to drop with a (W) as my grade. I like the way he teaches, if you pay attention and ask questions he is more than happy to help. He is very competent and guides very well .
As long as you participate every now and then, class is a breeze. Put a little effort on the homework and he grades really easy. He's a funny guy too.
I enjoyed this course quite a bit with this professor. He actually wants you to learn and pushes students with assignments and tests so that you actually do learn the material. He is organized and is clear from the very start on what he expects of you. I appreciate that more than anything from a prof. I highly recommend him.
The class was hard, but I don't feel it was really the profs fault. It is kind of learning math for the first time. Its pretty abstract. This class is mainly focused on the logic, and he doesn't really focus on the philosophers themselves, or their mindset, which might be a turn off for some.
Easy A - IF you know how to follow directions. Read the syllabus. If you can take online, I definitely would recommend it to avoid any long, dry lectures. Respectable for his knowledge, but be prepared for tricky and specific 5 question quizzes. 400-word discussions. Book needed for direct quotes. If you care, you will seriously do just fine.
Interesting and easy class. As long as you show up and do your work you should be fine. Teacher is pretty great.
The class is very well structured because all deadlines are laid out from the beginning. The quizzes are harder but the extra credit compensates for that. If you do the reading, you should pass the class.
Tough teacher... his expectations arent clear.
Seriously my favorite professor I've had. I was super nervous about the class and was gonna withdraw and am SO happy I didn't. He gives SO MANY extra credit opportunities and gives easy points for participation. On the first day he tells you, "if you pay attention, the class is easy" and it is just that. Pay attention, study, and you'll be fine!
I really enjoyed his logic class. Dr. Mowad has a great sense of humor and I actually had him twice a day because I took PHI216 as well and I never got bored. Every single thing is outlined in the syllabus, thats extremely rare. Any question I had he was happy to answer and his lessons are very easy to follow. Hes very consistent and intelligent
Possibly the worst class I have ever taken. I am a straight-A student and it was apparent from the beginning that he rarely ever allows A's. Assignments were extremely precise and confusing. One single sentence off and it completely tanks your grade. Throughout the class, there are only quizzes and discussions, so few improvement opportunities.
Does not help students and is a really tough grader and want give any credit for something if you didnt do it all right.
While what others say may be true about taking his class in person, I'd highly recommend not take his online class. This guy comes off as very patronizing in his online course (then again, I make people cry, so I guess I am also guilty). Don't even bother reasoning with him if his assignment due dates fools you even once, he will ignore you.
He teaches philosophy but is very one-sided when it comes to everything that is in the class. Teaches like we have taken philosophy our whole lives and expect us to put big concepts into elegant work. Wouldn't recommend taking this class, if it is recommended you take it for a degree just take an easier class it is just a culture class anyways.
When I was in his class, I was overwhelmed by the amount of pages we had to read for his class. His lectures were also long but it was bearable. The one assignment I thought I did really good on was my final paper to later be seen as "not thought out" and "one-sided argument" when I had it reviewed by other professors. This class was ridiculous
Dr. Mowad is very knowledgable and a great professor for those up to the challenge. Expect lots of reading, writing, and listening to tons of lectures, and meticulous editing to adhere to precise guidelines set for assignments. He is direct about what he is looking for from students and assignments are well explained, but the workload is huge.
He talks like my AP LITE, and AP Lang teacher from high school, which is supposed to be harder than a community college. I felt like the final essay/exam for my class was a bit unfair, since 2 out of the 2 prompts were just outright easier to understand. Overall, he needs to tone down the difficulty to the community college level.
I took this class for credits to get my Associates Degree. This is supposed to be an intro Religion class and it's the hardest thing I have ever taken. He is so specific on grading, only does online lectures and gives you no homework other than little 5 question quizzes. I felt like I was fighting for my C the whole semester and I learned NOTHING.
In my opinion I feel the teacher struggles with deconstructing information. Into a manner that provides a great level of understanding for students. I also believe the teacher exist in what makes the most sense to him. And disregards the perspectives that don't align with his own train of thought.
short quizzes almost every other day (max. 7 questions) but they are on the lectures for that topic, which can be reviewed while taking the quiz. each module alternates between an exam (prepare responses for several prompts bc it's random) or discussion (form your own response) that are 400-words minimum. submit your assignments and you'll be fine.
I'm a 4.0 student took online accelerated summer class with an enormous amount of reading ancient text. Expects you to understand on your own, 5 question quiz worth 100pts. Lectures are old 15 min videos, you don't get to watch until AFTER quiz. condescending, pompous, and unhelpful. write 4 papers for final reads/grades 1. I hired a tutor. NO!!
I'm just gonna say I should've listened to the reviews and the rate and not take the risk of taking his class.
definetly a harder class than i expected but it is easy once you get the hang of things. he always answers emails quickly. his grading takes a while but when he does, it is a lot. if you email him for help or need to go to his office hours, he is definitely super helpful. some topics are weird. but he's a genuine person and cares! offers ExCrd.
Dr. Mowad claimed to understand this might be a first philosophy course for many of us, and then graded as if we had taken one before. He did offer extra credit though, and worked with me at the end of the semester to get my grade up to where I could be happy with it.
Taken over summer, rude teacher, way too many video lectures at a pace that is too fast to keep up with while working a part time job. Offers little to no feedback for drafts for discussion posts. Boring and dry lectures, about 10-15 minutes per video with 67 total videos. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Go with a different Professor. Mr. Mowad is a smart mouth Teacher, monotone and way too much online lecturing, its awful.
If you are extremely interested in religious studies, do not take his class. It will ruin it for you. The lectures are crazy long, the longest lectures I have ever had to sit through in college and he does not respect that class should end at a certain time. If you ask too many questions he will leave you 10x more confused.
Its rough because he is clearly a genius and knows exactly what he is talking about at all times. That being said, it is difficult to engage with very dry lectures. Lots of them. Im personally able to show up and get an A, but I know many arent. Even with good grades, this is not a class I would take again.
His lectures arent like your typical ones. For this class we had to watch videos where he talked really fast and we would just have to write down what we thought would be most important. (Of course you can pause it and rewind) The in class work is very helpful when he goes over the videos in depth and encourages us to ask questions.
Dr. Mowad religion class is all based off of his lectures. You watch his lectures take quizzes on them and write a discussion paper. His lectures are super confusing he talks very fast and it sounds as though he is reading out of a book. He is a tough grader everything has to be precise. Very confusing and hard class with little instruction.
I have NEVER been so discouraged to learn. In a 101 class they treated us as though we should have already known how to lead philosophical discussion and use only objective truth in writing. They clearly were looking for a "correct" answer in their discussion posts and mainly essays. Told him everything he wanted to hear and got an A, 100 on Final.
I never leave reviews anywhere but this deserves one. He's not meant to be a teacher. Grades too harshly on entry-level students. Don't take this class unless you are a genius with religions. He's very lecture heavy and doesn't explain anything without using terms that aren't easily understood. I wish I took no class rather than this class.
He is very strict with grading his papers and only had one point of view and if u steered and wrote your opinion he would give you a low grade. He accused me of plagiarism when I never did
I could tell by reading the syllabus this was going to be such a stressful course. I had trouble passing the syllabus quiz it was that difficult already and assignments due on the 2ndday of class. I could hear the professors voice in my head telling me he was better than everyone else by the way he wrote his emails. I had to drop the class 1day in
I enjoyed Dr. Mowad, he is a great teacher. You can tell he really loves what he does and he is very knowledgeable! Notice how everyone is complaining his course is boring and lecture heavy? Well that's because is it is but when you do the reading outside of the course its quite awesome! I really enjoyed the HW assignments to!
This class is easy if you apply yourself. I received a B because I often skipped class and did not take notes during the lectures. Dr. Mowad hands out note sheets during his lectures with the exact questions on the tests. These note sheets (as well as your own personal notes) can be used on every test. This class is somewhat repetitive, but easy.
His logic class was, at times, rough--but he did a good job at ensuring topics were understandable. I'm glad I had him for logic.
I took the introductory world philosophy course online and I was instantly bombarded with papers I had to write within very strict deadlines. Being an introductory course I expected a little more leniancy and easing into the subject rather than just having to complete a paper on a short lecture within the first few days of class.
Very lecture heavy class with slideshows that do not have the information we need to learn. This is a problem since he does a very poor job of explaining and does not know proper teaching skills. He never provided study guides or other ways to learn. The only resource we have is from what he tells us, and we were prohibited from using the web.
- The lecture is extremely lengthy, lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes of continuous talking. The professor shows no concern for the students and does not attempt to show the connection with them. - He expects the responses in quizzes, tests, papers, and discussions as if you are at master's degree level in order to meet his standards for assignments.
Great professor! I enjoyed taking his class and he connects well with his students and is interactive. His way of teaching worked very well for me and he is funny. I recommend.
Class is very lecture heavy, but other than that it is an easy A. Even if you don't fully understand the material, just follow the grading rubrics and requirements stated in the syllabus and you'll be fine. Professor Mowad is a very lenient grader and he tries to make the class interesting even though there are lots of lectures.
Dr. Mowad is extremely clear on what he expects from his students, This class should be an easy A if you are diligent with note taking and listening. The tests are low pressure as you can use handwritten notes, and there are hardly any assignments besides the reading.
His class is very easy once you understand the flow. He gives out a note packet with questions- all you have to do is be present and answer the questions (which he goes over) and the tests are open note with questions identical to the note packet. He gives very straightforward instructions. You'll only fail if you skip multiple classes.
Quizzes don't match reading material and lectures, yet specifies must take only from textbook reading and lectures. Hard to write papers when you don't understand the religions you're writing about.
Easy A! Not sure why so many bad reviews. His classes are sort of repetitive, but very easy! Show up, take notes, take the tests. I like him! Good professor, sort of reserved and keeps to himself but he's kind!
He is an exceptional teacher and truly one of the kindest people you will ever meet.
I really like him!!! Very kind, and funny. He keeps to himself a lot hahaha but really nice guy and very passionate about what he's teaching. I'm taking Philosophy of Sexuality right now and it's super interesting, also an EASY A! It would be hard to fail this class.
Yes yes yes take his class!!
As others said, lectures and reading assignments didn't appear to match quizzes and assignments at all. His weekly emails were a jumbled mess with no coherent thought. Little feedback was provided if you messed an assignment up. Slideshows in lecture videos provided no true information. Fit the philosophy professor stereotype.
He is terible! Requires you to go to another website other than canvas to do the homework just to make you buy the textbook that you dont need to read. On that website you need to provide an acces code only found in the textbook, that is not provided, and then the book is never used again. And he clearly does not care at all about the class.
He will not work with students at all; just there to get a check! He will not update his powerpoint notes and they WILL look different to in-person lecture powerpoint slides.
You need to have AMAZING comprehension skills to be able to succeed in this class. He is not very lenient when it comes to grading. He literally has said do not submit idiotic work, which I get but come on the lectures are so hard to understand. Not allowed to go to previous question on quizzes. 2 assignments per week and 1 paper per module.
I took his classes in 2023-2022. I enjoyed his lectures a lot and his personality,
It was hard to keep track he would talk really fast and move on fast. Also never told you how to do something clearly always said it was a riddle.
It is essential to read the textbook also get the textbook in some kind of way. He has VERY few items to grade and you should NOT miss class. His lectures are very boring in the sense that he has a very monotone voice and his general attitude towards the subject. He also has a very specific format for the way he wants things done.
Nice guy, seemed very stressed and hard to get ahold of outside of class. He doesn't give homework/assignments, but you have to be in class to get the lecture notes as he doesn't post them online. He also gives you a packet at the beginning of the semester with the questions to the test.
As long as you attend the lectures and complete the packet, you will be fine. Attendance is graded, and if you miss a class, you will have to look up the answers on your own, which will get you marked down on the tests. You can tell he's passionate about what he is teaching, yet the lectures aren't very interactive.
Manageable and straightforward! As long as you complete the readings, the quizzes are easy to pass and directly related to the material. For the essays there are many prompts to choose from, which makes it easier to write about topics you're actually interested in. Overall, a great option if you want a low-stress but educational Philosophy course.
