Really nice, helpful and inspirational!
great teacher! shows a ton of interest in the topics at hand. it fun to be in his class. YOGOWYPI
I personally like him.
Good teacher. Very smart and helpful. Can be confusing sometimes and definately tests on his lectures GO TO CLASS

Nick is the kind of teacher who picks favorites and lets his emotions determine your grade and NOT the quality of your work. Although he is Passionate about his study, he is far from a good professor. Take his class if you like regurgitating information, and complete servitude.
Good teacher. A lot of work, but his intercultural communications class was fun I would highly recommend anyone to take it.
He can be somewhat bland sometimes, but he is really passionate about what he teaches. I personally liked his class and didn't notice any real issues. He didn't really give alot of homework, and what we did have was easily written before class in a couple of minutes.
I will try and keep it clean... Well if your a good speaker dont taking this class he will pick you apart. If you are a bad speaker all you have to do is show up. Not a fair professor at all. Probably the worse one I have had at SPSCC.
Best Prof. I have had here. Works hard to help selfesteem. COme to class, practice the speech and you will do well. Thanx Nick!
I really enjoyed his class and he was a wonderful teacher. Never thought I'd learn as much as I did and I think it's an excellent class for all. =)
Hes ok. Not very open minded though. Its either his way or... well.. his way. He is funny and I enjoy his class to an extent, but like I said: Hes just ok.
Great teacher, but you have to do your work. Not an easy A but he is very helpful and is open to your own creative style. Show up to class, do your work and you will get a good grade. He has a passion for this subject and I learned a lot, did my work-I worked hard and got an A!
Nick Owen is a very useful teacher. Words like attitude, ambeguity tolerance, YOGOWYPI, and "wherever you are, be there" will always remind me of his class. Not an easy A, but you will feel good about yourself if you do well. The interview and cultural artifact presentation were good experiences. Not an easy teacher to take notes off of.
Perhaps the hardest yet most rewarding class I've taken. Workload is ample, but you get a finished product in the end. Good sense of humor despite being very serious and appreciative of the subject matter. Highly recommend his classes even if you don't need one, he will help you regardless. Olympics time he's good with friendly competition.
Took ENGL 235 in summer, the easy quarter. Major group project, so attendance is mandatory for the project. The best part of the class was the employment portfolio. It's a resume on steroids, containing everything you could possibly submit to an employer. For those who are seeking real professional jobs, this makes the class worth it.
First of all, this guy deserves a pepper. Second, he's one of the best at SPS. Owen knows his stuff and you come out real a set of skills that you will absolutely employ in the "real world". I am not afraid to speak in front of an audience anymore. Lots of work, but just do it. You learn things, how novel.
Yes he should have a pepper! Great class, loved his lectures. Had to go out of my element in this class but in a good way.
It's amazing to me his overall rating is so high. I took him for cmst 240 and taking notes from him is near impossible he speaks so fast, and he treats the class like we are in kindergarten as opposed to college. I appreciate difficult teachers and don't mind working for my A's, but his classes were painful and everyone in my class agreed. Avoid!
Work is easy but there is a lot. Lot's of short papers and speeches (it helped though). I walked into his class hating even the thought of speaking, it's hard to believe but I wish i took his class years ago. It's a must. Nic knows more than it seems. He's seen THOUSANDS of speeches. Canadian. Recommend for communication.
Awesome professor. Loved the class. A lot of work, but all really interesting. As long as you do the work you're good. He's funny and I loved his lectures. Great class and prof, definitely recommend!
not a class to learn public speaking
Awesome. Fully involved with students and really helpfull. Like his group projects as well.
great teacher and great class. I hated public speaking before this class and after i felt really comfortable speaking in front of the class. super easy class also
Amazing experience! Passionate Professor. He is the master of communication and he knows it. Beware...his looks and personality will distract you.
Hes horrible. Fun class, but hes a HORRIBLE professor. Hes cocky, and teaches the class like were in elem. school! He grades really hard, and has favorites. He takes public speaking so serious, understood. But hes intimidating and just annoying!
Took Public Speaking with Owen. Great coach always positive feedback. Really good.
Nick is a great teacher. I love when he repeats himself, it really helps the brain download and lock in the information. NOt good to miss class, because you do miss out on a lot of good information. I found that i didn't want to miss class, because his classes are very enjoyable, and i can say now that i am comfortable with public speaking
I love Nic at first I was a little worried he was going to be one of those jerk teachers but after the first week or two he really showed a different side. He's very helpful and understanding of peoples fears of public speaking. He gives good criticism so you don't feel like you're being attacked. Overall he's awesome! :)
This class you NEED to take notes. He's not strict on you attending class EVERY day but he doesn't like if you're missing A LOT of time. We rarely read our books, most of our time is doing small practice speeches and working on our Group Presentations. Don't be afraid to ask him to slow down and ask questions. Let him know you're paying attention.
He makes class very interesting, and his lectures are engaging. You have to take a lot of notes, but he repeats himself and tells you what you need to know for the exams but you do not want to miss class. You have several papers and assignments, but they are generally easy, and he is a relaxed grader. Beware of the take home final though.
Must show up, will miss important information. Has group project. Very helpful with all aspects. Gives helpful feedback. Really enjoyed Nick's class
Great class. Owen is knowledgable, helpful, and passionate. He loves what he does and it's evident that he's there to teach. Saying this, this class requires work. Towards the end of the quarter is when group projects, essays, and speeches come. It's somewhat overwhelming, but manageable as long as you put your mind to it.
Took this class mainly for the VLPA credit, but it ended up being one of my favorite classes. Owen is reasonable, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. There is quite a bit of work, but it's nothing too crazy. Only complaint I have is that a lot of his tougher assignmentsprojects are all pushed into the last month of school.
While he often has a very serious demeanor Nic is a great teacher and exceptionally knowledgeable about almost any aspect of communications studies. He can be a little long winded when he is lecturing but he manages to keep things interesting, and sometimes funny, which is hard to do for a 2 hour night class. Would definitely recommend him.
Nic was by far the BEST teacher I've had at SPSCC so far. He is very energetic in his lectures and doesnt make things boring. If you do the work and show up for class, he will give you a fair grade. I would'nt say he is a tough grader but he can tell the amount of effort you put into your speaches and will give you the deserved grade.
I enjoyed Nick's lectures they interest me. The homework was easy and simple. I was not crazy about our final project of having to do an interview project for a month and a half it took up too much time he should realize that most students have other classes to worry about, work, etc. You only use the textbook 2 times. The final is a take home test
Already have BA from St Martins . Took Nic Owens class for Nursing credit to transfer to UW this Winter. I thought this would be easy being a community college. Nope. He is demanding. If you want to learn about communication and cultures this is a rewarding class. He is really enthusiastic each night and cares about his class time and lectures.
Very passionate professor who truly cares about the subject matter and the students. He has clear grading criteria, and as long as you do what's asked you'll be fine. The class itself is an easy A, but know that you will have to show up to class and participate. You will learn a lot of life skills in this class as well, so it is worth it.
He doesn't give much feedback on papers, which is frustrating cause he'll give you a B and just say "Be more specific." My least favorite prof so far. He seems kind of conceited/self important. Most of my classmates didn't like him. You can also tell which students he likes and which students he doesn't like. Otherwise I enjoyed class.
He is a very harsh grader and doesn't give away A's very easily at all. He doesn't give hardly any feedback on papers which is very frustrating because he grades them so harshly. Also, be aware that the largest percent of your grade is a group project, you can get A's on your speeches and still receive an A- due to the group project.
Group project was the best! Worth 20% of grade very heavy and stressful. but he will give you a good grade if you meet his demanding expectations. Come to class and turn in assignments on time. You will learn tons from this guy.
You can tell he loves the art of Public Speaking.
Exlcellent class! Interview project allowed students to visit first hand with a person from another culture. Nick is an insightful lecturer as well. Attendance does matter he does not tolerate absences at all.
Professor Owen was an awesome professor. I was comfortable with the classroom environment which made it easier for a Public Speaking course. He provided lots of useful feedback and allowed us to give one another feedback as well. He is very thorough and enthusiastic about the course. I highly recommend his class to anyone.
He does a lot of lectures, but they are easy to take notes on. He doesnt assign too much reading.
I went from Public Speaking paranoid to very confident in 10 weeks. Nicholas was enthusiastic every morning and it was a 7 AM CLASS! This class will help me in my future . I am grateful.
Nick Owen was such a great professor to have. He made public speaking so much fun and I truly treasured the time in that class. He does a spectacular job of making the environment comfortable and that's super essential in a class. You do have to put the work in, but it's really not too tough and he's very ready to help.
There are TWO finals, but he won't acknowledge that. He says "one is just a group project, one is a seven page paper". The paper is supposed to be the final. The group project takes months. It comes out to a 100+ page report. After all of the work we put in on this project, he gave grades without an ounce of feedback. Not even sure he read them.
Great prof! Super nice, funny, and helpful. Got me really focusing on communication for maybe a further degree..
GREAT professor. He is my favorite professor at SPSCC. He is a very positive teacher and really care about his students. His class is a mix of lecture, discussions, group work, and presentations. It is a comm class so there are some required presentations, but he helps you to become a better public speaker. Highly recommend.
Nick Owen made a great first impression on the very first day of class. I learned so much, and even sparked in interest in heading towards a communications major. The learning environment was also great, the fun meter was always on high. There is one group project but it is not scary. Not many papers or things to grade off of but they weren't hard.
I thought this class would be easy, but there is actually a lot of homework and a major assignment that spans the whole quarter. I liked Nick but found the class to be so SLOW. We would spend 3 days talking and learning about something that could've taken 30min. Don't bother buying the textbook either. All in all, this was a very interesting class.
For public speaking there is a big group project, but Nick has a talent for putting together really good groups with people who work well together. I have never been so happy with a group project, and he meets with all the groups separately to give feedback and explain what you did really good and bad.
There was a lot of homework, but as long as you participate and stay motivated, youll pass. He makes class enjoyable and has a sense of humor that not everyone gets but overall has a great personality. I hate public speaking but he helped me gain the confidence to perform great speeches. Youll learn a lot in his class!
Nick Is fine. Really really boring though. His lectures put you to sleep.
we barely did any real public speaking exercises, we had mandatory speeches but were restricted so tightly on what topics we could actually talk about. He assigns this tedious group project which on paper seems pretty straightforward but will literally take up the last 6 weeks of class for no good reason.
Best class I have ever taken at SPS. Considerable writing. The skills we obtained in his class are going be invaluable in the future. Thanks Nick!
Nick is a funny guy who like the "fun meter" to be high. Lots of note taking in this class. A large group project and lots of speeches but not too bad. Nick is readily available to help you and is very organized. I really enjoyed his class.
Easy. He has a great conscience and open mind.
He may seem arrogant sometimes, but he is so chill, and easy that as long as you do the project, take notes, and do the work assigned, you cannot get any lower than an A. Also, if you like soccer, than he is a match made in heaven, unless your a Liverpool fan. Otherwise, one of the easiest professors you will ever have.
Nick is honestly one of the best professors that I have had at SPSCC. He is very understanding and helpful. I will say that he is kind of hard to get ahold of though. I'm taking him again next quarter for another one of his classes. You will definitely learn a lot in this class so pay attention. Good luck to any new students and give him a chance.
I learned INVALUABLE skills here - does make you work for it! Don't take if you can't attend. Lots of lecturing so prepare to take notes. He lectures fast on some things and slow on others. There is a group project that takes a lot of time. He's a bit distant but he's understanding of the difficulties of public speaking and you'll learn SO much.
One of the hardest, yet most rewarding classes I have ever taken. When I say hard I am talking about having to stand in front of your peers and speak; however, Nick really helps to prepare you for your speeches. Nick gives good and honest feedback and he makes you work for your grade! He is so inspirational! I def recommend taking Nick Owen.
This was a great class, but as a 3.96 student it was one of the most challenging academically. You definitely receive what you put into this class, so do the work and practice your speech!
Nick is an awesome professor. This does not mean he is easy however. His class is very straightforward, its all laid out, and there is no question what is expected. Gives excellent lectures and test questions come right out of the daily lecture notes. There is a group project, but its not that bad, it was kind of fun. Very little homework.
Public speaking was pretty easy. We had 1 or 2 tests that were on his lectures. Every speech was pretty easy as well, nothing that isnt doable at all. The only difficult piece was the group presentation that was about 15 minutes. But again, he graded easy and it was doable
I took Intercultural Communication and I would not take it again. Criteria is not explained well enough, the textbook is lengthy, and the assignments were mediocre and way too open ended. The main project was fine, but his overall layout on Canvas was disorganized and unprofessional. Overall felt unheard and like my questions didn't matter.
Youll learn a lot, whatever effort you'll put on it will be the grade you get. I often felt bad I couldn't ask a question but he is way too smart. He is kinda flexible but not much. He doesn't have the best CANVAS organization so that is his weakness, I suggest asking how he wants the regular assignments as he doesn't provide a rubric.
Big group project. Worst experience of my life. Two of my group members hated each other and they ruined our project because of it. The project took place over half of the quarter, too... I hate group projects so if you hate them too and you don't NEED to take this class as part of your degree, don't take it. Not worth your time and money...
Show up for Zoom meetings and follow Canvas announcements. This a an easy A. Good and interesting guy.
A Gives great feedback. Attend class meetings. Give feedback for others. Learned a lot.!
He has unclear criteria for his assignments and then grades harshly. Even if I include all requirements he will still give me a B on the assignment and say I missed the requirements. He will also say you missed criteria that was not stated, so if you take Nick, which you have to because he is the only CMST 220 teacher, always go above the criteria
Interview project was a lot of work and difficult. I got a lot out of this. Professor Owen was easy for homework and daily assignments but challenging for the hard stuff. He was critical of Trump but also hard on Evergreen radicals. He taught me well on being open minded. I might take his public speaking class this winter.
By far the most unorganized and ridiculous teacher at spscc. Ive been going for over two years (a few degree changes), and he does not state his expectations clearly. Even when you do everything exactly how you think he wants based on his lectures and examples, he will still dock you points and not elaborate on why! Boring lectures.
The course itself was easy. The professor was just so disorganized and monotone that it was impossible to know what you were even supposed to be doing each week. I could only sit through 5 minutes of his "lectures", mainly boring ramblings. Yet in another class with weekly lectures at least 2 hours long, I was able to pay attention easily.
Comes off as kind of pompous, like he is an arbiter for totally subjective matters. Imposes his political views. The grade is based on few, heavily weighted projects that are graded a little tough if not fairly. Put in work and you'll get a good grade, but he is not a pleasure of a professor by any means.
This professor is very inflexible. His canvas and expectations are disorganized and he lectures in panopto recording videos. Each video is 30 minutes long and there are like 3 a week. The worst part is he has no remorse for technological difficulties and if u miss an assignment he locks it. if you wanna turn it in late its 50% off despite quality.
Professor Owen was a kind and informative teacher. Very openminded and had patience and understanding when presenting intercultural theories. I would think that spsc students need to take this diversity classes.
Very fair and effective professor. Very good at understanding that we are all not great at public speaking - but teaches that we are all part of the public speaking process. Really cool class.
Nick is one of my favorite professors. he offers a very well structured guidance in the assignments he gives and it makes the projects more manageable. Within this course he made it feel like he was just walking us through his expectations. I did my first annotated bibliography and I Liked it?! He showed me how to enjoy writing research papers.
Assigns few assignments, lots of textbook reading, hard to fail hard to get an A, takes him 20 days to grade even when feedback is necessary for subsequent assignments, and this. .Nick - "Don't use lofty words. Why say plethora when you can say a lot. .English profs get frustrated when they have to pick up a dictionary to understand student work."
Nick was so enthusiastic to be back in the classroom during this pandemic and it showed all quarter :-). Excellent feedback and encouragement! I enjoyed the class and definitely gained skills and the confidence that I will apply to future opportunities and possible professional endeavors like presentations or interviews.
Any individual would benefit greatly from taking this course with Professor Nick. I was nervous at first. All in all, Im so glad I took this class. It was fun, really engaging, and very helpful to my future. Valuable life skills were learned. In future I will have a better attitude, more confidence and self esteem when giving business presentation
Great class overall. He's very understanding of the fact that not everyone is comfortable talking in front of an audience. Decent amount of work but is doable if you know how to manage your time. He doesn't give much feedback on graded assignments -- "looks fine".
Professor Owens class is very lecture heavy with multiple 30+ minute videos every week. He is also very slow when it comes to grading so don't expect to get feedback right away. His feedback is generally pretty vague and can come off as condescending at times. He can be a harsh grader at times so be sure to take any extra credit opportunities.
Very good lectures. Promotes inclusivness. Gives high grades for everyone. Very good overall.
Nick was fabulous instructor! He would spend extra time chatting about our direction and offer very good suggestions after class, if needed,. He was very clear with his speech instructions and expectations...easy listening. He expected alot and pushed you to achieve, but isn't that what college is about!
monotone and unengaging. this was a hybrid class so half in person and half online, both parts sucked. lectures often went past the designated end time and in order to not fail you had to stay and listen. so many speeches and lots of impromptu speeches, it sucked.
Take the face2face class. He is easy to get along with. Lots of writing. Not difficult compared to last teacher in speech.
His class was boring. He mostly talked about him self not the lessons. He doesn't respect student. He doesn't answer your questions properly. SELFISH.
Outstanding & not Boring, Face to face lectures were so funny, Video lectures not as good as live, Owens was focused taught us alot about diversity. Authentic teacher.
His canvas is very unorganized and not professional. Takes forever to get to the main points of lectures and assignments when speaking. Goes very in-depth about miniscule concepts. Tendency to over explain. his class is rather dragged out but not necessarily difficult. "Textbook required" I didn't get the textbook or read anything from it.
Not an easy class to take. Only possible way to get an A is to go above and beyond the expectations laid out. Otherwise, following the rubric given will surely give you a solid B+.
I really liked this class.Took the Hybrid public speaking class, I thought Nick was excellent every class. The virtual learning was mostly homework assignments and discussions. We did alot of practice impros to prepare for graded speechs. Plenty of feedback from Nick. Nick was engaging and made us feel comfortable. I really liked this class
Very easy going relaxed class pace. Nick explains concepts in a understanding way. Lots of graded homework. Not hard to get 5 out of 5. Attendance is important. Probably would have failed if we dint show. Good class.
Felt like he wanted me to do poorly :/
Good course and very good communication feedback about speeches. Improv speeches were tough. Graded homework is easy. He allowed me to pick a controversial topic for my final persuasive speech on transgender athletes. Got good comments from my peers on the discussion board. I respect him. He is likeable and enthusiastic.
I had a really hard time with this class, mainly because the grading criteria was never clear. He'd be very nitpicky in his feedback about things he expected but didn't specify this at any time when giving us the assignment. I've been holding my breath all quarter waiting to see what my grade ends up being because his grading is so unpredictable.
Owens is a very informative teacher, He is often brilliant, and enthusiastic....but expects alot out of his students. Easy if follow rules.
Nick is a no-nonsense kind of guy, he can be intimidating at first but is a very kind person. Public Speaking was genuinely so much fun and the textbook readings were short and easy. The homework was also easy and while the class can be daunting I would recommend it. I would definitely take Nick again he was a great professor.
No grading criteria, grading based on emotions and often unreasonable deduction of points. Many students in the class complained. Always assigning homework late but forcing students to submit it early and on time even though the assignment requires 2-3 days of preparation.
He constantly changes due dates, making it hard to plan. Our final speech was originally scheduled for Thursday, but he changed it to Saturday, then to Sunday, and finally said don't submit it until we have our grade from the previous speech. He makes planning difficult and does not care about your personal life.
Nick is a great teacher
Great professor. If you do the work and participate and pay attention, you'll be fine.
Did not communicate well at all. I took public speaking online and he did not list in the course materials that we need a podium for some speeches, and I didn't even realize until it was too late. I once emailed to ask a question about an assignment 3 days before it was due and received a response the day after it was due.
He is a VERY hard grader, make sure If you take this class follow the rubric EXACTLY!!
Very passive aggressive when asking for help and does not provide help. Constantly changes the assignments criteria and has no rubric. He takes off too many points for small things. Every week you have to watch 2 or more 20+ minute videos. Finally had to do a grade appeal for this class because his grading was so unfair. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Class was honestly a joke, a fully online public speaking class should be all I have to say. He was late to reply to just about everything, didn't help beyond the online lectures. Whole class was just an overall joke, easy A though.
He was not a great teacher. Rarely explained what he was looking for on his asssingment, and when he did make it clear, still said that it wasn't up to snuff. Proof of this was when he asked us to write a speech using an outline, so I did. When turning it in, he said I was incorrect, even though I submitted the same outline for our last assignment.
Hes an alright dude but just can't plan. We had almost no assignments throughout the quarter but then shoved all of our big assignments into the very last week. He could just use time a whole lot better but he is an easy class.
Professor Nicholas can have an unpredictable teaching style, but using tools like Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook helped me stay on top of the workload. The class had its challenges, but I ultimately found it rewarding.
He was horrible not because his assignments were hard, but because he is EPICALLY bad at canvas. His formatting is terrible, his assignments + required references all over the place, he kept moving due dates with no warning, he posted a locked assignment and then didn't push the due date to make up for the days missed bc of his own negligence. 1/10
Owen does not respond to students. For a communication teach he is very hard to communicate with.
While the assignments we did make sense and I improved my public speaking skills, I cannot overlook his lack of organization and obvious power trip. Assignments are not given on a regular basis - it would be better if they were released on a regular, weekly basis. Does not embrace linguistic diversity. Does not show understanding of students' lives
I was incredibly frustrated by the way he grades and provides feedback on all my assignments. He would deduct so many points on heavier assignments despite the fact that I followed the rubric. His feedback was unclear and the criticism that he provided was not constructive at all. I would not recommend him as professor.
I enjoyed this class and I feel like I learned a lot about public speaking, but I couldn't help but feel like Professor Owen was majorly condescending and left little to no constructive feedback. I watched every lecture video, did the extra credit, participated in every discussion board, and I am still stressing about my grade. I don't recommend.
If you do all the work it's fine, but this dude doesn't even follow his rules. He is Canadian, so it kinda makes sense. In the class, you will be learning about stereotypes, and he is not nice like they say Canadians are. Have to nudge b/c > 0.01 speed. Have to put up with his stuff. TAKE BIN ZHANG IF YOU CAN! Took CMST101, much better instructor.
Not understanding at all and very bias. Your grade depends on how much he likes you not on how good your work is. Do not recommend taking him if you're a busy person or someone who actually values diversity not a good diversity professor.
Fantastic teacher! Very enthusiastic and fair. Well regarded at the College.
Would not reccomend. Professor is unclear on what he wants for outline. Only posts videos of him rambling for an hour. Tough grader is not understanding of his students. Critiques every thing very harshly. Docked off points because I was talking to the camera and didnt have a podium. Really tried but this class is too hard for what it is.
