He's extremely intellegant, goes off on tangents all the time, but not all that great of a professor. Too smart to effectivly relay the information to students. Quite a character though.
Very "out there", spends too much time giving a math history lesson. Try to choose a different prof.

HE IS NEVER AROUND
he always goes off on tangents about nothing, and goes over the information too quickly. I did well in the class, but I know a lot of people who didn't. He is a nice man, he just isn't a good professor
This guy really needs to learn how to teach. His brain has rotted so much that his mind is distorted. He thinks that teaching means telling us about the Roman Empire and how he needed to shovel that previous morning. NO MORE PASSELL!!!!
Doesn't explain things clearly, get a history lesson instead of a math lesson
Does not explain material relevant to what's on the homework. I had to drop the class because I was doing terrible, and I'm good at math. Started in the middle of the text book instead of the beginning. AVOID IF YOU CAN!
If you want to teach yourself math from the book take this professor. He is concerned with proving why things are the way they are rather than teaching HOW to use them. I am recieving a good grade in his class due to hours of studying!! DONT TAKE
This guy is the worst, you can try teaching yourself but he tests you on the ways that he wants you to learn it, not what the book recommends. Cnat read his writing, and he doesnt even talk about math, very low test scores, average = 30%
You can't read his writing. He goes off on tangents about all kinds of stupid things. He doesn't teach you he just writes stuff on the board and expects you to learn it. His tests are very difficult. He insults students when no one knows answer.

Stay as far away from this professor that you can. He will eat you up and spit you out.

He's a very smart man, but he is not a very good professor. It's very hard to follow what he is teaching in class. If you have him, be expected to do a lot of out of class studying if you want to get a decent grade.
Smart man--bad teacher. Hard to understand his logic, and what he thought was a piece of cake needed more slow teaching and help for his students. He's also very proud of his accomplishments.
very smart man, however likes to talk about "interesting" things before class time...i never pay any attention in his class and learn everything out of my book and am getting a decent grade...but don't recommend him to people who can't learn math on their own
Hard to learn from, learn all on your own. Doesn't know how to teach and talks about random things all the time.
Well unless you liked being called an idiot in class then go ahead and take him. I was thinking about having a minor in math until I met him. He turns you off to math completely
Yet another of the numerous classes in which you must teach yourself. Plus side tho, if you can read and understand the book before you come into the class then you can understand him alot easier. And he will do every problem thats on the test on the blackboard at some point in the course.
HE IS A VERY BAD TEACHER. DO NOT TAKE HIM. HE ATTACKS PEOPLE AND DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT ASKING ABOUT YOUR TEST.

Horrible professor. Very intelligent man, who belittles others. He may be a good upper level teacher but is not a very good teacher for pre-calc.
The man does not help
Likes to tell long, boring, pointless stories - usually about Euler... He's really smart and can do mathematics very well, but he just can't teach it...
He doesn't do a very good job of teaching the material. He just made me more confused. He expects you to solve the problems on the test the way he does it, even if your way is right. This is hard since you can't understand what hes doing. He does try hard to help you though.
I am finishing up my 4th semester here at Eau Claire and this prof was in my first. Everything previously posted is 100% correct. I ended up dropping the class and changing major's. It took me awhile to realize teachers with this caliber of suckiness are not the status quo.
the worst of the worst, he is a chauvinist pig especially if you are female, stay away, i dropped in 2 days, couldn't stand his attitude!
Pretty sure I dropped this class ALREADY because I don't like his style of teaching. He goes off on random tangents, that have NOTHING to do with math. He talked about Chinese food for half the period yesterday. I need a professor that can actually get me to learn something. Pretty sure he hasn't done that. If any of you are considering taking Math 106, do all you can to avoid getting Passell. That is, if you'd like to have a good math experience. peace out ad have a nice life. Later ya'll
I love him. I have no idea what happened with all the other raters, he is a very interesting man, and has always been helpful and nice to me.
Dr. Passell is a really nice guy, but he isn't that great of a teacher. His lectures are often hard to follow, but you can usually get down the main points. It's a good idea to do the homework, and he is extremely willing to help you out if you ever have any questions. His sense of humor is a bit dry, but he can be very funny at times.
Math 106 is a thinking class, not really math problems just how to use math in the real world. When goes on his little talks about China or whatever its to get students thinking about math. Do what you can to get him, pretty easy grading on very easy tests.
I am a math major and got a 5 on my AP test my senior year. Coming in as a freshman I was confused from the start. He just proved formulas and rambled on. I was about to change my major then I switched teachers and it got a lot better. He is very smart but shouldn't be teaching. Don't take him!
bad bad bad
I dropped in a week and am not taking it again until there is a new prof. teaching it. He's nice, but just way too confusing, only way youll learn is teaching your self out of text.
1 word to desribe this prof= HORRIBLE!
he's a horrible teacher, doesn't know how to teach and gives problems on tests and quizes that everyone in the class gets wrong adn then thinks that they are neat. i don't recommend him at all.
It was supposed to be an easy math class, but it was like teaching math to myself. Actually I didn't learn anything from the class. The tests came out of nowhere and all he does is talk about anything that isn't math. You could never go and prolly still get a B, but just don't take him, you'll regret it.
Brilliant mathmatician, terrible teacher. Not recommended for lower level courses.
Worst teacher ever, unless you wanna learn about stupid side facts that take up the entire hour, teaches as if you're a senior genius, im retaking it to help my first grade and i have a C
Stay Away! Absolutly briliant man, bad teacher. He basicaly turns and faces a blackboard and talks mumbo jumbo. I had a Moderate level of intrest comeing in, I thought it would be a cake walk having HS pre calc. I got an A in that class. If I get a C I will jump for joy. The first test i got a 90 on (review). the last test 30. What a Joke.
The man's a genius, but he can't teach. I think he should be teaching grad students. He's very nice and occasionally has funny comments, but overall is a pretty poor teacher...especially for linear algebra. He'll try to help you, but it usually ends up just being more confusing. Nice guy, but I'd take a different prof.
This professor is the worst ever if you think you know what your doing good luck because his test are horrible. He doesn't teach what is going on very clear and you have to try to teach yourself. He likes to talk about intelligent mathematicians a lot. I would of took a class about that if I wanted to know about it. Good Luck with him if take him.
Strays off track very often... Doesn't help with your questions and his tests are rediculous. Be prepared to teach yourself all the material, and maybe even going to outside resources to know all you need to know.
Not helpful at all... Rambles about things that have little to do with the material. Tests are rediculously difficult because he isn't teaching you.
NIGHTMARE of a prof. Does not teach - uses class as a soapbox for rambling about random nerdy topics that have nothing to do with math, and then sometimes does a homework problem. Everything (even tests!) is handwritten and he has unintelligible penmenship. Not at all helpful out of class. *DO NOT* TAKE THIS CLASS!
Horrible beyond horrible! **** too. Three of us had the SAME EXACT answers on the same test and we got three different grades. You won't learn anything and will want to pull your hair out the entire semester. Wait and take it at a different time with a different prof.
This class is completely worthless. It's a good class if you aren't a math major and just need to complete competency. The work isn't hard, there are no tests and basically you can skip several times as long as you turn in the homework. To get a B, you only have to do 80% of the assignments. An A requires extra credit, which is never really offered
I think this man may be crazy! Take any other class but this one to get your math requirement. We honestly talked about nothing that will ever matter in real life. The last day of class we talked about fruit! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
this man is ridiculous! i don't know how he graded us, since he had no clue who we were at the end of the semester and his basis was on attendance (not taken) and participation. he does not teach, just rambles. if you want a study hour for other classes, and just need it as a g.e., take this course as a S/U!
Wow... I highly advise you not to take this man as a professor. If you do, prepare to teach yourself from the book. Takes about two weeks to get you back a quiz by then there will be an exam. Oh yea, he doesn't write very well, can't read his exams or his notes (if he teaches that day). Skips many steps, sort of confusing. Good luck if you get him
This guy is absolutely terrible do not take him because you are just wasting your time, by far the worst professor/teacher I have ever had I am alright with math and this guy just confuses the crap out of you...in no way should you take this man's class' i dont know how he even got a job to be honest...
Wow...what can I say. I study for 5 hours for a calc2 test just to find out its on applications we hadn't discussed yet. Useless. Constantly rips on Calculus I AP high school courses, when my high school AP calc teacher was 1000 times better.
Amazing teacher
This man can not teach! He constantly tells us that he is smarter then us. he stands if front of the board and writes, but you can't see it, then he will erase it. You never know when he is changing the chapters. His tests are impossible, they have nothing to do with anything in the book! Get Out Now! HORRIBLE!
I honestly don't understand how this man is still teaching at this university. He fails to actually teach any material, let alone address math related issues in class - I specifically remember talking about tigers for one class period and ligers during the next. If you are actually wanting to take a MATH class, then consider other options.
HORRIBLE, run away and avoid all of his classes. Learning must all be done on your own, all he does during class is talk about higher level math/physics problems that have no relevance to learning material. If you want to pass the class, find another teacher!
Very smart man, fairly bad teacher. It is clear that he knows the material very well, he just isn't able to express it well.
You would be just as well off if you bought at Calc book and sat in your room and read it yourself. He doesn't explain anything and just assumes that by seeing the answer to the problem, you will know how to do it. Talks to the blackboard and not the students. Worst educator I have ever seen. Talks about random stuff during lectures. Avoid him.
Assumes that you know how to find the answer to the problem. Can't explain anything. Get a different Prof. if you can.
I still have nightmares about his class which I took in the fall. He knows Calculus, no doubt about it, but there is one thing that he doesn't know...how to teach. You would really be just as well off if you taught yourself. The only thing Nick really seemed to accomplish in class was telling stories. He is also good at killing your GPA. Avoid!
I thought I accidentally walked into a "math history" class, every single class period. Tangents about EULER get very old really fast. Genius of a prof, worthless as a teacher. RUN AWAY, GET OUT, GET OUT GET OUT! However, if you love reading math books and teacher yourself calculus, you make like the class....
Terrible. Doesn't teach or follow the book. There isn't much homework and you don't have to show up though.
He is a very smart and nice guy, but he's a horrible teacher. He doesn't always stay on topic, and his examples are hard to follow because he skips steps. He'd be okay for an easier class like calc one, but I wouldn't take him for calc 2.
worst teacher i have ever had.
worst teacher I've ever had.
what can i say? horrible teacher. i dont recommend him, unless you want to fail.the highest grade you'll probably get is a C. and that is if you work your ass off! horrible!
He is a very nice man....but you learn no math whatsoever. I loved listening to his stories though,he's quirky! You never have a test, but you can't get an A unless you participate in discussions (nothing to do with math) do ALL your homework, and have decent attendance.
Worst professor ever. DON'T TAKE PASSELL!!! I learned absolutely nothing. I played sudoku during class because all he did was tell stories. Oh the agony! Escape while you can!
Dr. Passell is the epitome of somebody past their prime. He is smart but has no knowledge of how to convey that intelligence. Instead of talking about math he'll talk about things he like such as WWII, interesting science, or his family. He like to give out A's even though the class is a joke.
GET OUT GET OUT I had this professor for my 2nd semester and I couldnt stand him. Leraned nothing... well at least not by myself. All he talked about were stories, gave us text books, and I taught myself as well as I could.
great class if you're a liberal arts major with no connection to math. learned no math but earned my GE credits required. i don't know if he knows any math, but doesn't matter if you just want an easy A.
Terrible professor. I dont doubt that he is very smart, but he just cant teach calculus. Isnt the most clear. Assigns homework but doesnt collect it.
This is not a class for math majors who prefer strategic, organized textbook assignments and tests. The course is designed for people who aren't intereseted in math but still need the credits. There are a few assignments and NO tests. Professor is very knowledgable on many subjects and generates interest.
Passell's teaching style is just about what most of the comments on this site suggest. Quirky, careless, and HIS way...pretty much an educational failure. He's a good ol' boy, and doesn't give much care to the students' common understanding of subject matter.

Worst professor ever. At all costs do not take him. You learn nothing and that is reflected in your grade. He is old and just needs to retire.
math 106 was the biggest joke. He said that if you showed up, did your homework and wrote a good paper, you would stay at a B. I never went, wrote my final paper in two hours and slid it under his door and got an A in the class. Hmm...
This proffesor is really passionate about his subject, and enjoys talking about many other things. He gets sidetracked easily. I'm sure if you are interested you could lean something, but most in math 106 are not. It is a "mathmatical appreciation" course.

Dr. Passell isn't as bad as the comments make him out to be, at least not for Math 111. You will be learning from the textbook a lot, and it will take a while to figure out what he's going to ask on a quiz or test, but if you do the problems/readings he assigns and make note cards for each of the quizzes/tests, it's not too difficult to get a A.
Coming from somebody who is already fully educated on the subject, I can safely say Nicholas Passell is the worst teacher I have ever had. Makes the simplest of subjects horribly confusing, unresponsive and arrogant to questions, constantly weaves off subject, has unnecessarily hard tests. He's a smart guy, but an educational disaster. Avoid.
Passell is easily the worst math teacher in history. I am already horrible at math and it did not help that he made every subject overly difficult and complicated. Not to mention that he got so far off topic during classes that his subjects of choice would become pop cans, jumping rhinos or the temperature in his attic. Avoid at all costs.
If your math isn't solid, do not take him.. I had him for Pre-calc and he expects you to know where each number comes from.. If you're a visual learner and like to see where each number is coming from where, then don't take him..
Passell seems to be love or hate. I hated, but looking back, I appreciate his teaching more than I did at the time. He is incredibly thorough about showing you everything that he is doing on the board, and able to answer questions. He does have stories, but often relate to what you are learning, which can be helpful. Under appreciated, but decent.
Intelligent, impressive vocabulary, nice, can't teach math. He blazes through problems on the board with the assumption that we are all math majors. Doesn't explain what he's doing and skips complex steps. He is a nice guy and will work with you if you see him in office hours but I advise taking someone else. Plus side is he grades generously.
I have such mixed feelings about this class. On the pro side, attendance is not at all mandatory and there are zero tests/quizzes. On the con side, the directions for the few assignments (including the final paper) are incredibly unclear, and he isn't very reachable by email. I'd say go for it if you're only taking it to get your math credit!
He is very intelligent, his vocabulary is impressive, he knows a lot of trivial facts and theories, he even really knows his mathematics. Unfortunately he lacks the ability to teach math to his students. He isn't clear, he doesn't explain what he is doing on the board, races through problems and expects you to keep up. Nice guy, can't teach.
This Professor is easily the worst teacher on the Uwec Campus. makes simple ideas insanely complicated. I had already taken Precalc in High school, but i was still lost in this class. Avoid at all costs.
Nicholas Passell isn't the greatest teacher to say the least. He mumbles, stands in front of his work, and teaches useless fact. He thinks he's a doctor because his wife is, he doesn't go a day without mentioning physics or calculus when he is teaching pre-calc! Bright note-he does give extra credit quizzes sometimes
Passell is by far the worst professor at UWEC. He stands in front of his work so you cant se what he's talking about, he mumbles, is very sloppy on the board, and his tests and quizzes are not what he talks about in class. He talks about useless information daily that does not pertain to the class. Do not take this class if you care abour your GPA!

Nicholas Passell is the worst teacher of all time.
He knows what he's teaching. Unfortunately, you don't and he's not good at fixing that. The class may or may not be hard, it depends on how much you can learn from the textbook, not from him.
I had him for linear algebra. It was a while ago, take my ratings above with a grain of salt. I'll say this though. He got me interested. He got me excited in the subject. It's probably because of this class and him that I'm going back to school to finish my bachelors in math and get a phd.
Do not take Nicholas Passell. He is by far the worst teacher I've had. The man is smart and knows a lot about everything under the sun but uses backwards methods of teaching. Constantly refers to how the people of the past are smarter than his current class. Creates his own methods that he calls the "Passell" doctrine. Warning- Don't take him.
Additional info: He handwrites his tests and quizzes in illegible cursive writing which he expects you to decode as you take the test/quiz.
Not very clear. Test are hand written and he has bad hand writing.
This professor is by far the worst teacher I have yet come across at UWEC. He handwrites all tests and quizzes. In my class we two tests and two quizzes. Along with those he graded maybe three homework assignments. Basically this meant if you had trouble in the beginning of the class you were screwed. Avoid this class if at all possible!
Avoid! He doesn't explain anything well at all, and what he does explain doesn't seem to make any sense. I read the book and taught myself all the content. You may as well not go to class and just read the book. He goes off on random tangents that mean absolutely nothing.
Does not answer questions, doesn't teach the way I learned PreCalculus in high school. We mostly teach ourselves out of the book. Do your best to avoid this if Math isn't your thing.
Okay, I'm going to be completely honest. This proff is the worst proff I've had a Uni so far. He goes off on tangents that don't mean a thing. He handwrites the quizzes and tests (the only things you're graded on) in his messy cursive. He doesn't teach well and makes his tests and quizzes extremely hard. He is helpful if you take the time
TERRIBLE!! I actually dropped out of his class and still have to take it, i will try with all my might not to take it with him again!
If you like learning random crap during a math class...take this! He goes on and on about random information about Gauss all the time! Half of the time is actual math you need to know for his horribly cursive handwritten tests/quizzes and the other half is math history. He is extremely intelligent, but can get annoying with too much information.
WORST TEACHER ON CAMPUS BY FAR! I am not kidding. this class should be classifies under history, not math. he talks about random uselass facts. plus he has really bad cursive writing so its impossible to take good notes, his quizzes and tests are also done in this bad writing. I took math 114 after this class and did great, avoid at all costs!!!!
Avoid at all costs. He rarely provides necessary help or application, and instead, he tangents into math history or something random, like dolphins. If you are prepared to teach yourself pre-calculus, by all means, take this class. Mathzone is a better teacher than this professor.
one of the worst teachers i have ever had, your going to have to teach yourself the course or you wont learn it at all
I had this tool back in the early 90's and he was horrible then.. some things never change.. retook CalcII because of his lack of teaching.
Tests and quizes are hand written and difficult to read. He has some interesting stories but they are rarely pertinent to what you're learning. He actually suggested I get boys from the class to help me learn to material because I'm an "attractive girl". I suggest going to Math Lab or learning from the book instead of going to class everyday.
If you love math, Nick is great. If you are only taking the class because you have to, avoid. But he is truly brilliant, and you can learn a lot if you want to.
Do not take trig with this guy. He is hard to understand. His writing is terrible; his cos looks like sin, as if trig is not hard already to understand. Expect to learn nothing from class and expect to teach yourself everything.
