He's a nice guy, decent prof. Not much too him. Could make lectures more interesting and simplify it. Needs to post lecture slides online before class! He's good with answering questions and very approachable guy!
He was extremely fair and one of the best profs I have had at explaining difficult concepts. If the class was having difficultly with a particular topic he would go over it again which was really helpful. His tests were pretty straight forward. He is also very enthusiastic while lecturing and very approachable..overall an awesome prof!
He is a good guy. His test/exam was extremely fair. The content was semi interesting. Kinda hard marking on presentations and they are boring and no one really cares. Easy to talk to and knowledgeable. Overall good prof and class.
Amazing guy and beyond the most helpful professor I've met in my life and very kind. His exam was fair - it was strong on the technicalities but the material itself was fair. His teaching skills are unprecedented - just the way he teaches makes the material much more interesting than any prof. I genuinely like the course because of him now.
I'm down with this guy simply because he dissed animal rights activists with confidence in front of an aud with 1000+ people in it.
Great guy, very fair with his exams. Genuinely cares about his students. Also very knowledgeable on the subject. His lectures could be a bit more engaging, and the student presentations weren't very well organized. Overall though, it was a great class, one of my favourites.
Ive had him before and liked him but this course changed that. He marked way too hard. Presentations were worth way too much and too much emphasis was placed on being a pro at analyzing articles. i get the purpose but teach us how to do it. dont just expect it. Half of the class dropped within the first weeks.Horrid. (Comparable to my hate of 2F01)
Awful professor. We are not neurobiologists yet. He expected way to much from us. He's biased in marking. Such an awful experience.
The worst class. Half of the class dropped it so I expected him to be a little more fair. No. Never taught us what he was looking for and always lectures us about "being in fourth year". And always said "did you get that" like we are a bunch of morons. Good riddance
I really enjoyed his lecture, he is a great professor, helpful and is always taking the time to clearly explain the material. Encourages students to participate in discussions. Great professor overall.
I loved the way he mingled teaching with humor. His style of teaching is so good that as long as you are attentive in his lectures, you don't even need the textbook. His encouragement to students to ask questions, answer them in the best possible ways, taking time to explain things at any time you need is what impressed me the most. He rocks.
He fully admits he will try to trick you on exams. If you already know everything there is to know about molecular biology, you are golden. If you would like to learn, good luck. Very little feedback. Tricks in exams that appear to be typos but are done on purpose. He speaks much too quickly about a complicated subject.
Seems like a nice person, but can be quite insensitive. Horribly difficult, unfair. Tricks on semantics of material rather than genuinely testing on subject. Openly admits, but doesn't help the plethora of students who need a good mark to get into grad schools. Dreading the day I'll have him again for a class...
Great instructor.
Not very helpful
The master of multiple choice. Don't think the tests will be easy - all of the answers will seem right. You really need to study and make sure you fully understand the material. Just going to lectures and passively absorbing the information won't get you a passing grade.
This class had such great potential. Dr. Vesprini was stubborn, inflexible, often rude and confrontational. I did not feel comfortable asking questions, nor speaking with him about course material. One day in lecture he got in a verbal (yelling) argument with a student because she questioned his teaching style. He centred her out and she left .
Tests exclusively from his slides, but not attending class can be your grave mistake. Explains every concept as many times as you ask. Very strict with his marking and policies but is very clear and detailed with his explanations.
Him and his wife (she runs the labs) are on a high horse and they think that they're always right. A class average before 50 is attributed to incompetant students. They think that they do no wrong so dont expect to get anything re marked. Labs are rediculous and tests are long. Would not reccoment taking this course at Brock.
Vesprini is very thorough on the topic. He goes over the content very clearly. The tests are hard, you actually need to know the material. It can be a lot but he tells you far in advanced what you are expected to know. I think people think he's bluffing. He's not: know the structures, branch points, over arching themes, oh god know the enzymes!
Expects tons of memorization as if u were only taking his class. The topics of the write ups for the labs and the final project were hard to decipher - expects things students to be able to make huge leaps of understanding even though he hasn't provided the basis for that level of understanding in lecture or lab. Then claims it should be easy
He was a really good prof for preparing you for future classes, but that being said he was a hard tester
He makes everything confusing. Teaches one thing in his power points but ask completely different question on the exams. Reading the textbook would make you get a better grade than listening to his recordings.
He only lectured for one or two classes but it was interesting and clearly laid out. He also was the coordinator for the labs, which were not great but I believe that the program used for them was most of the problem. BIOL 1F25 is good for a context credit
Helpful in clarifying a lot of the online content for the course. He also did a guest lecture that was really interesting. Nice to look at.
Dr. Vesprini has so many ways to help you while you're at home and his exams are very fair. All the questions are taken straight from the slides and the textbook can come in handy for the assignments.
Vesprini is one of fairest profs when it comes to exams/assignments. He tells you exactly what hes looking for and encourages you to ask him questions. Really knows his stuff, but get ready to read because theres a lot of material you need to know.
He is very knowledgable and will only test from his lecture slides. If he mentioned it in lecture or on a slide, it is testable. Even if it is a small picture out of a 100 slide lecture, he will ask you about it. He is very fair in that he tells you this, but his tests are hard. I never feared multiple choice so much.
Best prof at Brock. Very fait
He was alright
He is very condescending. Will not help... will basically just say you should know this and move on. Doesnt care about students. Because he is very smart, he expects us all to be sooo smart to. It is not fair. Not very nice either.
I took this course over the Spring. Dr Vesprini was good! Always answered questions but also mentioned a few times that everything was found in the slide or text book. You need time for this course - there is a lot of work but overall I found the course great and intriguing. His multiple choice went from really easy to really hard. Good luck!!
I overheard this professor saying that a low class average doesn't concern him. I would avoid taking any of his courses unless you are extremely confident in yourself. The la component is basically an undergraduate thesis. This course will put you through the ringer.
he knows his stuff, exam m/c was beyond unfair as agreed by the WHOLE class. each q was a paragraph, comes off rude if you seek clarification, will not consider regrading, TA is useless cause hes at M.I.T not Brocku. does expect you to know everything for lectures. he will test u on everything. pre much he is nice until Prof reviews are submitted
So rude.
This is a tough course as there is a lot to learn. Testing is fair with respect to what is taught throughout. If you focus you will do fine. If you have questions get them cleared up pronto so that you are able to fully understand the curriculum at hand. Would definitely take another course with him. Final is a curve ball so be prepared.
Expects a great deal of very specific knowledge for all tests and quizzes. He seems to be condescending and has high expectations for students.
Everything on the test is from the lecture slides. Textbook of no use unless you want to go out of your way to learn more than what is going to be on the test. You can be tested on the smallest detail on the slide. Always available if you have any doubts. Very responsive to email questions. Review lectures are crucial.
Need to read lecture notes to pass exam Labs were easy
Rocked so many socks off he has a pile in his office. Reality check though, if you want to be handheld call your mom and ask her to console your insecurities. This guy know the ins and outs of Neurobio and is willing to teach you if your willing to put in the effort to learn. If you aren't that kind of student, switch to Communications.
Great Prof!!
Great learning experience with Dr. Vesprini, he made biology easier than usual.
This prof is probably the opposite of caring. In his emails, he says "im happy to help students" but he is really rude and condescending and makes students feel as if they dont matter. Would not reccomend unless you enjoy being belittled. I hope I have no future courses with him since I am only in second yr.
Great professor. He explains everything in great detail and does a good job at being clear with his explanations. He is always open to answer class questions during lecture and online.
Exam was very unfair. None of the questions were from his slides , all application. And he words things terribly. Made me really dislike chem.
Condescending and rude
easier online class I've ever taken, so detailed any major even non-science major won't have a problem, not cumulative, online midterm, 5 labs quizzes and a final
NO COORDINATION BETWEEN PROF AND TA LITERALLY BOUNCING BACK AND FORTH
Is not understanding whatsoever. He is rude in the online chats where students ask questions and has a bad attitude in my opinion. His lectures are helpful so I'll give him credit for that and his course is set up so that you are able to pass. It wouldn't hurt if he was a little more understanding and kind.
Very difficult class, so much material in each of the lectures. Prof is not clear on what material needs to be known for the exams, you are only given an hour online for the midterm. He added more questions to the 2nd midterm but did not add any extra time to accommodate those.
Professor Vesprini taught 1/4 of this course and took care of the online lab portion of it. He is very accessible ( almost always online ready to answer questions). The only challenge with him is that his test / quiz questions are sometimes awkwardly worded, so you have to read very carefully and use some logic in order to answer properly.
Does not complete equations on the board, skips steps expecting you to follow along because it is "easy stuff". Cuts lectures short because it is "easy stuff" and expects you to learn on your own. Not approachable, will not reconsider marks. Tests have wrong answers on them and justifies it by expecting you to "pick the closest one".
Took this class to fulfill a math and science credit. The lecture videos were the main resource used in this online class and the tests were nothing like them. I felt very prepared but quickly realized this class was designed for failure. I do not recommend taking this class. No response from TAs and no empathy from professor.
Not a good prof, isnt clear about study material and online labs have nothing to do with the material expected for the tests. condescending and has no emotional capacity for those who actually pay his salary. Wouldnt recommend
A lot of people say he "didn't care", but that's just because he's quiet and kind of introverted. Other than that, he's a good prof, explains things well and clear. It was just the course was boring and really difficult for me. Labs are a great way to get extra marks, though!
Rude and doesn't have any sympathy what so ever
Midterm questions were unfair and we barely had any time to finish them. The course material was intense but super interesting. I wish the prof could've been more engaging and willing to help
To start- I am an A student, with 82% cGPA and around 85% for 4th year. His test is extremely difficult and the answer is not easily obtained from lectures. For this course, I got 65. For another course that he created the test, I got 67%. If you are a student trying to get great grades for graduate school, do your best to avoid Vesprini's course
I took the online offering of BIOL 2P97 and because of COVID, the exam was also online. My experience was that studying even a minimal amount made the midterms quite easy since it was open book. The exam was also doable in an online format but would've been difficult in-person. The tough part was the assignments which he grades pretty harshly.
Class is just strange. Exams have questions on them that are too easy and free marks which is good but also were answerable without taking the class and leave you uncomfortable thinking if there was a trick. Other questions are poorly worded/formatted to be as difficult as possible to read. Final project has zero guidance and feedback is not good
This class was a rollercoaster in terms of me trying my best to keep my grades up. I will say that he is one of the fairest profs out there; if you skip the video lectures you will suffer. Luckily I made a comeback on the final (worth 50%) so I can finish on a good note. The essays are a pain though.
No complaints about Dr. Vesprini. It is your typical human physiology/biology class. The two tests and the exam were kind of tough but I found the two written assignments to be interesting and relatively easy. If you actually enjoy biology and human physiology this class is a good one to take.
I am an student that usually gets low to mid 80s in my classes, I have taken two courses with Dr. Vesprini, and they were both awful. He wants you to succeed but he will make every effort to make sure that you dont. If you are trying to keep your GPA high or trying to go to grad school PLEASE DO NOT take his courses. If you have a choice, RUN!
good proff, just make sure to read the course documents
Responds to email rapidly. Clear course outline. Wish class was in person.
taking this course as a context credit. easily one of the quickest to respond to email proffs ive had. lectures are great, especially being back in person and on campus. very detailed oriented but always willing to help. makes me more interested in sciences.
taking online biol labs for first year. super fun labs and light workload. responds to emails instantly. was worreid about an online lab but he makes it fun. papers to read are tough but worth while.
this proff teaches a lab section of the course for nurses. great labs so far. detailed and challenging readings but he makes it fun and enjoyable. learning a lot. wish this could have been in person.
just wrote proffs midterm. super fair. time was a bit tight but given it was an online exam that sort of makes sense to stop cheating. if you stay on top of things in the course you will learn a lot but all manageable. would take anything else they teaches
Easy midterm. Cool material
Just wrote his midterm. Was worried given some of the feedback from this class in other years. Test seemed fair. Detailed and specific but he told us to know the details so it all seemed reasonable, just a lot of material to know but we sorta knew that going in
midterm grade was fair. course is detailed but very enjoyable. not sure if hes changed content from previous reviews but if you follow what your told the course is pretty good and grading is reasonable.
So far so good. Final project is intimidating but if you work at it but by bit it's ok, really just hard to learn this 3d protein program. Definitely use the help sessions.
It is annoying how none of the quizzes are on lecture content, but lab content. In the labs, you have to read long articles and get tested on that. It would be way more beneficial to have tests based on lecture content. I did not expect to get much higher grades in regular chemistry and biology than in this class. The lab tests are not myfavourite.
Wrote midterm yesterday. Seemed very fair. Super fast to get a response back when emailing. Lectures were interesting especially since I'm not a science major I found the material exciting
Great proff for fall semester. really seems to care about students and very passionate about what he teaches. detail oriented but he was clear that for the course topics the details mattered. Would recommend to anyone needing a science context credti
Great proff to chat with after lecture. midterm Test was detailed but he spent weeks prepping us and besides it sorta goes with the nature of the content we were learning. Review sessions were great and defenetly worth it. Labs were ok but my group had missing members
exam was detailed but fair since he told us. answers email crazy fast. seems to care alot
Great proff. Always available to help. Exam was fair. Not a fan of science but this course was good
I'm normally a straight A's student. My 4yrs of hardwork for keeping up a good gpa for professional school, literally went into the drain after taking his classes.
unfair distribution of grades within the course with minimal communication and help when asked to meet at office hours. never avaiable for insight or input. very very bad professor. stay away from his classes
not sure about the poor reviews for the project. i got a good mark on mine but i followed the directions. like if he said we needed to spend time on it going into detail i didnt take it as a bluff. review sessions were super useufl, helped me avoid easy mistakes. difficult but interesting project
Just wrote final. Was nervous after the midterm but seemed super fair. Will update/edit if the mark is bad but I left feeling good. Guy responds stupid fast to emails. Best proff for response time
exam was long but fair. hes big on details but that fits with the content we learn. follow his directions and everything goes really well. wish this course was in person.
great proff. easy course easy exam.
Great prof. Course was hard but he gave us a bonus because the assignment was hard to do with covid. Guy responds in minutes to emails
exam was fair. assignment was hard but offered loads of help. would take again if offered
great course. easy exam. learned more than i thought but in a good way
Final assignment was hard but learned a lot and he gave is a bonus. Final exam was fair as long as you remembered structures. Responded to my emails faster than any other proff. Wants you to do well. Good proff.
Great proff. Good course, especially since science isn't my main interest. Definitely recommend taking.
Great proff. helped us out for the final project. Is passionate about the stuff he teaches. The course is hard work but really interesting and would take again
Hard course but worth the effort. Really cool content. Analysis heavy
Course content was hard but prof was really great. Available all the time, responded to most my emails within an hour. Always in the chatroom answering qiestions. Lecture videos are long but detailed. Saved me from spending days reading the textbook. Assignment s were super interesting but took some time to put together.
Great proff. Seems to care alot and always answers emails fast. Great course
great proff. had him for the first half of a course on cancer, second half the brian. easy person to approach, always replies to email. would take again
Just wrote proffs midterm. Straightforward and pretty easy.
Midterm was fair. Responds to emails pretty quick.
Good course. Lots of info but worth it if it's your major
took this online in winter. great course. proff responds fast to emails. recommends
Tough course with lots of details but fair grader. Would be nice if so offered as in person post covid
Great course...learned a lot more than I thought I would. Very fair exam....labs were a bit long but super worth it
great course and great proff. responds to emails very fast and chats with the class online regularly. really seems to care. glad to have taken the course.
took course on brain for elective. straightfoward and farily easy if you pay attention. workload manageable but final exam was a bit of owrk
Took this course as a mature student not having had been in a science course in years. Course was clearly outlined and easy to follow. Proff engaged in many conversations and made everyone feel at ease. The course was pretty easy provided you consistently put in the effort to stay on top of things. Great course overall
ok course. not my fav content but proff tried to make it interesting
Good proff who seems to care. Responds to emails really fast. Wish course was in person but covid shafted us for that
second time having him. He is still as fair as I remember. But the labs are the worst part of the course (coordinated by someone else), which are worth 50% and are unnecessarily extensive. Long lectures...but online format makes it easier to speed through. Midterm and final are doable if you study the slides vigorously.
Good course so far. Learning more than I planed but Ill need it for med school anyway so no complaints. Course chatroom is quiet but kinda expected given its a summer course and online. Lectures are heavy but we dont have labs.
Super fair proff. Rogers outage was on the day of the exam so he offered multiple tests on different days and we could pick which one we wanted to take.
Great course, learned alot of interesting things. Finished the course much more interested in this area compared to when the course started. Workload was reasonable, especially since it's online and can be done in my schedule. Would recommend.
This professor is amazing! Very kind, goes out of his way to make the content understandable and also has no problems taking questions during lectures, after lectures or on the chat room. He definitely seems to care about students succeeding. Midterm exam questions were also extremely fair.
(Science Credit) [Cancer; Human Perspective] The lectures were somewhat captivating. Dr Vesprini is extremely knowledgeable, any questions I asked were answered quickly. midterm+final 75% of final grade quizzes 25% If you need to take a science context credit at BU and would like to learn something besides astronomy I would recommend this class.
Great course and great teacher. Would take again.
Great course, since Im not a science type person.
Good info. Great for my program since I need a science credit. Prof responds quickly to email.
BIOL 1P23 (Cancer a Human Perspective) was one of my favourite course to take. It was interesting and easy to follow along, as Dr. Vesprini really explains everything easily using metaphors and examples. As long as you watch the lectures and do the labs (which are very easy don't worry), you'll do fine on your exams. Loved this course.
Just rote his midterm. Super fair. Interesting material. Honestly seems enthused and happy to be teaching. If youre looking for a interesting course with a reasonable worload this seems to be a good choice.
I do not exaggerate when I say i have never wanted to just absolutely drop out more than taking this course. I didn't even get a bad mark but the workload is unfair. expect low AVG on midterms (30% average on midterm (he wont tell you it but ask the TA)), labs every week, super large workload in very aspect and he expects you to only do this.
So far so good but havent had the final yet. Even though some didnt like the midterm he gave us 3 or 4 review sessions online for 2 hours each. If yu ask him questions he seems very happy to help. Take his advice for what to know and you seem to do well. Labs are ok if you get their point.
I really enjoyed Dr. Vesprini as a professor; his teaching style was very understandable and he explained all the concepts simply. His tests were fair, although I struggled with several weekly quizzes since they sometimes seemed not to be based on the resources he provided. He was always available to answer questions in the chat.
Mean very very mean
Bio1170. For myself relatively inexperienced in biology, it was alot to understand in a short period of time and that reflected in my grade. Great teacher! Direct, encouraging, available to answer questions via email and after class. Encourages students to engage during lecture, and never made me feel afraid to ask a question.
