The class is way boring. That's pretty much it. I got a B, but it took a pretty good effort - read, do the essays, and study pretty good for the tests via the study guides he gives and the book guided ones.
He made this class so not fun, i would never take him agin. NEVER
He is honestly the worst teacher I have ever had. He's unfit for teaching. Do anything in your power to avoid this teacher. He made a potentially fun class into the a boring, fact memorizing class. If you do take him try to memorize everything from the book that is pointless. That's what is on the tests.
So I just took the final and after memorizing what I thought the tests were always on (The workbook), I was sorry to realize that wasn't the case. I'm STILL wondering WTF he used for the tests. Realistically: You get zero homework, & I dont think he took roll so you dont have to be there. Take someone else, but if you have to its not THAT bad.
Most amazing class and I'm glad I took it. His test are multiple choice straight from the text. Just study the your textbook and remember names with dates and you'll get an A. Also, he gives you several chances to get extra credit. No reason not to get at least a B or more likely an A.
This class was awful. If I hear anything else about the Trobriand islanders... Anyway, he wasn't a good teacher. Uninteresting, droning about irrelevant things... tests were pretty easy, but it just seemed... awful. He knew my name, though.
I think that Magalousis is an excellent teacher! He is so intelligent and passionate for anthropology... he changed my perspective on the world.. Seriously, I never thought that I would want to learn about the Sumatra Islanders, but that tattoo process was insane!!!
Teacher is boring and notes are awful. You mostly have to rely on the book. Don't even come to class.
Only take this class if you have interest. Otherwise you'll be bored out of your mind. You don't have to attend class, the lectures aren't helpful, nor are the movies. Read the book, which is boring and confusing, but its what the test is on..the book ONLY. There are a few chances for xc, you'll be lucky to show up on those days. Not Reccomended.
This guy shouldnt even be teaching. He's absolutely horrible at his job. Lectures are useless. Had no idea what to study or expect on his tests. Can't understand his lectures. Way too boring.
wow okay so if u can take another professor do it. IF not then just **** your take home essays. Um, the multiple choice qquestions are in the back of the book that are on the test too lol. So just study the even chapters. Do extra credit because that saves u. HES A HORRIBLE TEACHER.. but hes nice =/
Take him as a very last resort. His teaching style is very unorganized and he shows very little concern if you don't learn something. While attendance isn't required, if you miss a class it's held against you personally.Do yourself a favor, show up to the first class and tests, teach yourself from the book and avoid the confusion he calls teaching.
ok, if ur going to take this class be prepared for the most boring class u''ll ever take. Lectures are pointless! Notes are useless! Dont even come to class unless there's a test and something due! Ur book will be ur teacher. And for the LOVE OF GOD if he ask u how his class was don't tell him that it was boring. WHY? u don't wana find out........
I would rather brush my teeth with razor blades than take this class. The most boring waste of ur time ever, the man doesn't teach, the book does. Instead of going to class, play urslef in a game of tic tac toe, it will be much more exciting. Dude is horrible, who gave him credentials?! honeslty that person should be thrown off a bridge.
The take home tests are a help and the field trips are fun and interesting to museums. extra credit work can help and some of this is done as a team.
Do not take this class unless you dont want to learn anything. He is a complete joke. His tests have nothing to do with the chapters and he doesnt teach. He just babels on.. plus he thinks he is always right and i mean always. trust me :)
He's a great teacher. You have to read A LOT though. Basically, read the chapters he assigns, take the pretests on the cd, and you'll pass with a B at least. He gives two part tests, the first part is multiple choice worth 75 pts. and the second part is a take home essay worth 25 pts. It's really helpful, because it's open book and stuff.
Extremely interesting. Great teacher, but be prepared to read A LOT. If you read what he tells you to, then you can easily pass the tests. The take home [essay] portion of the test is pretty easy, and it's open book and everything. You get to watch a lot of videos, most are interesting. Good class if you are really interested. I recommend him.
He is extremely passionate about his job. He is really fair and a great teacher. The ctach is that you have to read... A LOT. But if you don't mind reading then you'll love the class. He presents a lot of really interesting movies and TONS of extra credit. Great guy, and a great teacher.
Lectures are boring, but dont zone out because he will call on you and make you look like a fool.
He's an amazing teacher. He's the former head of the anthropology department at Chapman University, and he still teaches like a university professor. Hard work, but you learn a lot if you make an effort. Basically, with his classes, you get a university level education for a community college price! He's a wonderful person, but you have to work.
I took him for anth. 100, and got an A+, but archaeology his much more difficult. He assigns four essays at a time and you have one week to do them. He's a REALLY good teacher though. He is a professional archaeologist, so he basically knows his stuff. He inspired me to become and anthropologist :)
Assignemnts are very easily graded. Tests are easy If you look through the study guides w/ answers in the back of the book & maybe do the online pre-tests for each chapter which are like 5 minutes each (16 chp in book). He's pretty interesting. When you first meet him you might think he's in the mafia... Motabella tuti fruiti... I got an A!
Very easy teacher. I think he might have come from a UC system, so he teaches more like a UC class. A couple group projects which are super easy, and mostly graded on tests. Very nice guy and he gives extra credit. Really cares about what he is teaching :]. Would highly recommend him!
Past comments that he is a nice guy who cares and is helpful are completely wrong. He is condescending and attempts to embarrass any student who can?t answer his questions. His lectures have no pattern and his white board writing cannot be followed. Unfortunately one has to take him to get the Antrho Degree. Not recommended if you can skip him.
I thought he was a nice guy. Though compared to other professors i have had, he is completely unorganized. Like the comment below me, his white board semi-lectures are terrible. They are hard to follow and he never finishes explaining what he has written on the board. He always goes back and forth with when tests are which is completely inexcusabl
Absolutely horrible teacher. Lectures are pointless. Tests have nothing to do with notes or lectures. I fell asleep and missed nothing important. He wants you to read the whole book page for page. yea rite! ppl have lives! He is rude and treats you like a child. Calls on people and makes you look stupid if you don't know the answer. DON'T TAKE HIM
Took cultural and physical w/ him, classes were simple enough. You can receive an A with minimal effort just by using the study guide-he takes his exam questions directly from it. Be advised to read the book, he randomly calls upon students in class to answer questions, and it's best you know the answer. Easy classes overall.
If there are any good comments about this teacher, I am sure that he wrote them himself! This bull frog is a pathetic excuse for a teacher. He doesn't teach, is rude and feels the need to discipline for no reason. He cant handle being wrong and will often kick students out of class for disagreeing with him. I could go on forever. Should be fired!
Honestly, i could not stand the guy to begin with. At first i thought the topic of anthropology would be interesting...and i still have some hope that it is but nick mag is soo dry, so boring, id rather stare at the clouds move than listen to him.no make up tests- on final day only.gives some extra credit.overall boring class, totally uninteresting
O nick mag...what can i say about mr.hobble himself.the class was like scrapping my head against apiece of sandpaper.not fun.He is the most uninteresting, degrading person out there.makes u feel like a pathetic loser if you dont know the answer.all the people that comment on here and "loved him" had to have kissed his ass..only way to a good grade
never never never NEVER had a worse teacher than this man through out my entire schoolin' days!
old and lonely man who takes his misery out on all of his students. Do NOT take him!
Boring class, tests are random, flips out about cell phones, would try another teacher first.
if u need to take this class and want an A, this class is for you. its so easy, theres never HW and half the test is in the back of the text book study guides, word for word. magalousis is really kind and silly i really enjoyed it cause it was so easy and the professors not so bad.
Took him for both anth 100 and anth 103, got A's in both. For the anth 100, as long as you read the book, you'll get an A. For 103, all the tests are take home essays, and he grades loosely. He is amazing, experienced, and intelligent, and if you are interested in anthropolgy I totally recommend him.
Magalousis' class is EASY! Take him! He gave us like 80 points of EC opportunties. He has no hw or class work. Just watch videos some notes mostly useless. the key is reading a little and going over the pgs he put in the book in the back. 80% of tests ?s come exactly from this. act interested.i was late and challenged him alot but recved an A
he kicked me out of class one night for disagreeing with a statement he made.. i wasn't rude whatsoever i simply stated my opinion.. apparently your voice isn't supposed to be heard in that class he likes his too much.
The class is outright ridiculous. He is an old fat guy who sweats profusely and hobbles around with his cane. The guy can't teach and just stands at his podium and sweats the whole class whether its hot out or not. He calls on people to embarrass them and doesn't let you contradict him whatsoever. Don't take his class, boring, very dry, annoys you.
Great professor got two F's my first two test. Did all the xtra credit and passed with a B.He's a great man that know what he's doing. He never picked on me. Mainly people who's on their celly or talking. If you're willing to learn then go for him if not take another professor.
I had him for both archaeology and culturasl anthropology, and I got an a in both. His tests are simple, and if you read the chapters, you're pretty much insured an A. He is incredibly intelligent and has had so much experience. He is by far my favorite professor I have ever had, and he has inspired be to pursue a major in anthropology.
Great professor for those interested on learning. Seems like a tough guy, but it is indeed very kind and considerate of those who show interest in the class. Open to discussions and new ideas. Challenging, not recomended for the mediocre student.
His class was way boring. He just lectures and shows us movies that he claims will help us with the tests. The test, however, came directly from the workbook. And he does sweat a lot. While I'm freezing cold, he's sweating. Oh, and he HATES cell phones, he actually took one from a kid. Overall easy class, but extremely boring as well.
Anyone who likes him is on crack.I am a good student, quiet in class and he still treated me like a child. If I asked a question he would roll his eyes and ignore me. Not sure why. Good teacher if you think watching a video teaches...
He doesn't stay on topic very well and tends to get you mixed up in a tangle of different terms and concepts, none present on the test. He takes all of his tests from the study guide, WORD for WORD. He is slightly abrasive towards some but overall a nice teacher if you come to class and pay attention.
I personally found him to be a pretty crap classroom/theory instructor. The book is useless, he NEVER covers anything on the tests in lecture, he failed to tell us about the workbook until a week before the midterm and he wouldn't tell us what was wrong with our papers when we asked. He would be good in a field school, but don't waist your time
He is a person like any of us. If you show him you are realy interested he will do a 180 on you. I took my first exam nd got a C. He was rude to students who just wanted to stroll in the class(He assumes that about everyone). Show him you don't think that and he will not be rude to you.
He was not a nice person in general. Although his tests were very easy because they were straight out of the book, I would not recommend his class because of the atmosphere. It is very boring and he doesn't give students the opportunity to voice their opinions.
He is really rude. I asked him a question on extra credit and he said i was a bad student for not knowing the answer. He attacks his students for answers to his really vague questions. I have never had a professor/teacher as rude as him. DO NOT TAKE.
Don't bother taking this guy's class. If I could do it all over again I would have taken the class at another college. His lectures are not structured, he will drill you if you were absent (no excuses), his overall attitude is not pleasant. I am a nothing but A's anthro student and this guy gave me a D. Worst anthro class ever...
I really enjoyed the class but he did switch the syllabus around. He is very knowledgeable and has a lot of experience. If you show interest in the class he will notice and appreciate it, and if you are absent a lot he notices.
Tests are NOT from workbook. He changed the tests. Workbook is useless. They are from the textbook. Read the textbook and you will get a good grade.
I just got an A in his summer course, which at first is hard if you don't read the book. But his tests ARE from the workbook so it is not useless. Also, do the extra credit, don't be late and participate and you will get an A. He's also a Liberal if that makes you like him any better. He's kinda mean at first, but you can win him over.
worst teacher!pops in a movie every class so he doesnt have to teach. tests are 70 m/c questions(a-E!) and a take home essay. He uses random examples from class on tests. Be prepared to teach yourself. He thinks anthro is the greatest thing and doesnt like you if you dont agree or are not opinionated. He likes to pick on students as well. Goodluck
you could teach yourself from the book. showing up to class is only important if you want to watch the videos.
Mr. Magalousis is great! He is passionate about anthropology and archaeology and he has an impressive resume (working with the San Juan Capistrano Mission ago for example) He still believes in strict hard studying, students should earn their grade! He is funny and witty, highly recommended class!!! Get the work book.
he might be a good archaeologist, but is a terrible teacher. avoid at all costs.
he has students write his notes on the board, gets upset if you dont know an answer, shows a video every class period, and blows up if someone is late. you can teach yourself from the text.
His tests don't relate to the lecture. He gets upset if you disagree with him. The tests are full of nit-picky facts, try to avoid this class.
Very difficult teacher, he makes the class way harder than it should be, he lectures on things that are not on the test. Avoid this class!
This class was AWFUL!! This professor is extremely opinionated and he will try and humiliate students in front of the class if they have an opinion that varies from his own. HATES cell phones, i-pods, and lap tops says our generation is garbage and is being ruined by all the electronics although he refuses to acknowledge it is a HUGE part of modern
Refrain from taking any course with him. His exams assess knowledge for which he hasn't bestowed upon. He hates opposing beliefs to his; however, he desires his students to research and question any information provided. He definitely displays a bias towards individuals which will be apparent after a week or so.
Not the best teacher. Too opinionated and won't let anyone argue against him. Biased against certain students. Boring lectures. His answer keys on tests aren't accurate so you lose points even if you actually got the question right. Good luck ya'll.
Worst teacher ever! just talks and talks forever, and you never know what hes talking about, or where you are in the textbook, his tests are exact phrases from the textbook, and very detailed, not whole picture type of tests. I have to retake the class, and im definitely not taking it with him
It will be hard for you to do well on the tests by only listening to his "lectures"... very one-sided and calls on you if you make eye contact but if you don't know the answer he'll make you feel stupid
Not as bad as the people on this website made himout to be. He wasn't my favorite professor and his lectures are often boring but there is something about him that I like. The notes he has people take are pointless but gives a summary of what will be on every test a day before which is extremely helpful. Doing extra credit also helps.
Magalousis is a horrible teacher and is just a mean person overall. His tests make no sense. I can't find where he gets the questions from? I studied for 40+ hours and still received a 68 on the last test. I'm dropping it. He will call you out and make you feel stupid. Don't take this class! Save yourself!!!!!
These comments are quite amusing. While I admit his tests are difficult, if you purchase the study guide with the textbook you'll see where all his questions come from. I received D's on his exam and a B in the class. Why? Being nice and actually caring, or at least pretending like I did, doing all the extra credit possible. Keep your chin up kids!
Magalousis has an extremely difficult class. His tests are not even relevant to class material. Good note taking won't help you, reading the book won't help you, and Magalousis certainly wont help you. Take with a professor that actually enjoys teaching.
Everything everyone has said is right on. He knows a tonnn and has actually done fieldwork. yet for some reason, you leave his class knowing even less than you did when u first walked in... he doesnt really know how to teach the material to the students. and his book (used every class)is looseleaf so u cant sell it back :( bust!
He's okay.. I slacked off the first couple months so I hard to study really hard for the last 2 tests. He lets you have up to 40 pts of extra credit. In the beginning, the class was full..more than half the class dropped. No homework but you have to read the text book a lot. I bought the text for $130 and it loose leaf..so I can't sell it back :(
His tests are hard, not relevant to the material you read or hear in his lectures. As long as you participate and seem slightly interested you will be fine. My test grades consisted of C's and D's, yet I was willing to learn and ended up with an A.
I got an A in his class because I paid attention and did some extra credit. I went to the Museum of Man (which was fun and interesting) and the Mission in San Juan. I like museums anyway so it was an easy A for me. He's completely misunderstood...if you're a mature adult, you'll get his humor. Cultural Anthropology is a interesting topic anyway
Extremely knowledgeable and experienced in anthropology, but he can't seem to teach it very well. Tests are very hard, half consisting of irrelevant information. Throws in a movie every class and then a Q&A review with the class. Funny guy if you can understand his humor, but I wouldn't recommend this class unless you've got LOTS of time to study.
Terrible. Don't take his class.
His class is by no means easy, however those of you who say his class is horrible and that he is not a good teacher, clearly do not care to work for your grades. He is the type of teacher that gives you what you need to succeed, and expects you to do the work to EARN your grade. I worked hard and got a B which im proud of :)
This class was extremely difficult. Lecture was useless. He seemed very elitist & aggravated. Played videos every other class session. 4 tests with the last 2 having take-home essays (which were easy As). The tests themselves are hard. No matter how hard you study, As and Bs seem out of reach. The textbook will be your bible throughout this class.
His tests are pretty difficult. And attendance isn't mandatory because he eventually stops taking roll. BUT, If you want to get an A in this class, show up and show interest in answering questions in class. Also do all of the extra credit you can! I failed the first two tests and got C's on the last two, but extra credit got me an A.
He is a horrible teacher. He doesn't help you with anything, his lectures are boring & pointless. He sits in the front of the class & talks while you try & copy the screen as fast as you can before he changes it. He doesn't tell you how he wants things done so if you do it wrong he just throws it away. He is just horrible! Don't take the class.
As someone who received in A in all five of my other classes for the semester and a D in this class, I think I am permitted to comment on how terrible and unclear this professor is. The tests are much too specific, covering unimportant and small facts, and the answer choices are vague. The "study guides" provide only some insight. Textbook is VITAL
I wish I could give him all zeros. His notes were pointless and never were on a single test. Very rude and thinks highly of himself. If you want a good anthropoly class just go to SAC
I completely agree with the 6/8/12 and 11/14/12 reviews. Tests always seem to have a group of irrelevant questions, information that was never in the book or talked about in class. I've been here for three semesters and I've had some bad professors and he has to be THE WORST professor at SCC. Avoid this class at all costs.
I want to say he's the worst teacher ever, but I have had worse. This is one of those guys that knows what he's talking about, but the problem is that he doesn't know how to teach what's in his head to the people who are willing and paying to listen. Avoid this guy he's just not good.
His class is boring, but it's easy if you know what to study for. Many students complain about the difficulty of his tests, but if you use the study guide and take the online pretests for the chapters covered you'll do just fine. I did the bare minimum in that class and still got a B.
Absolutely terrible, he lectured the first 15 minutes of every class IN HIS CHAIR and would then proceed to show a film for the remainder of the class. His test/quizzes were irrelevant to what was taught in class. RUN!
The class was easy enough, lots of e/c opportunity, but the teacher Magalousis, is literally not very smart. nice guy, not nearly the intelligence level you would expect from a college professor. stay away if you want an insightful interesting teacher who has an intimate understanding of his subject. you will learn nothing from him. Book class
This teacher is the worst teacher I have ever had. I got A's in all my other classes but this one. You can study as hard as you like but study guides are like 1/4 of the test. Stay away. Take a different teacher or class.
This guy is a bad teacher to me for the following reasons: 1. He knows what he's talking about he just doesn't know how to teach it. 2. He makes us take notes and read the book. (I wouldn't have a problem with this if the info showed up on tests, but it doesn't.) 3. His tests are super hard even if you studied. Avoid him and take someone else.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Worst professor I've had (and that's coming from a straight A student). He screams at the class constantly, and treats everyone like children. Survival Tip: get the workbook and focus on that. The tests come straight out of the workbook and have nothing to do with the lectures or assignments. (Fall '09)
TERRIBLE! My test was missing the last 3 pages and when I got my test back and told him about the situation, all he said was "that's just too bad." I even filed a report against him but the department failed to take any action. DO NOT TAKE HIM
He's kind and helpful if you need it but mostly you just need to know the material. His lectures have nothing to do with the book but his tests include the material from both-know the material!! He gives plenty of extra credit opportunities and he isn't a hard grader for his essays. The class is a little slow unless you are truly interested.
he is incredibly condescending and rude to students. he is inconsiderate and does not teach the material well at all. do not take his class.
Don't bother studying, the tests have nothing to do with the lectures.
This guy is lazy and the exams are not even based on the lectures
This guy is the worst teacher at SCC. The department really needs to get rid him.He has tenure, so he doesn't care about his students. He is lazy, doesn't provide clear lectures, and hist tests don't coincide with his lectures or books. DO NOT TAKE HIM, go to SAC instead. HE SHOULD BE FIRED, he is not fit for teaching position.
It's obvious that he knows a lot about the subject, the problem is that he doesn't teach it effectively. This wouldn't have bothered me as much as it did except for the fact that he is insanely rude and inconsiderate. He creates an antagonistic environment in the classroom that makes everything a struggle. I do not recommend taking this class.
Horrible teaching tatics. This professor knows his stuff on the subject but his teaching it to others needs some help. If you get this professor I would suggest that you drop and try to find a new one. Expects for you know everything from the chapters on your test. Every tough class. Also really unclear of what you have in the class.
It is terribly sad that this college allows professors like him to teach there. He illustrates the lack of care into the subject. I have taken a few anthro classes, and this was-by far-the worse one. SCC needs to review the hiring of him.
Dude knows his stuff. The tests are based straight off the book reading each chapter thoroughly will get you a good grade. Most of the notes you take in class are useless for the test but usually some interesting stuff to take note of if you like the subject. He's an old school teacher so paying attention and being punctual are big(former military)
Hard teacher but as long as you come to class and show effort you will do okay. Make sure to do all the extra credit and you will be fine. Go to all class meetings because he knows if you just show up for tests and he wont be as lenient.
This is the worst teacher I've ever experienced. he's lazy and definitely does not know how to teach! he personally knows his material but doesn't know how to explain it to his class!
I got a b. I studied for his exams but not too much. I like this professor. As long as you participate in his class, take notes, never miss his class, communicate with him if you're having a tough time and show interest. I like this professor, he gives 40 points extra credits plus the 20 points extra credits for the reporting then you're okay.
I don't have problem w this professor. Because I did all the extra credits(60points), perfect in essay plus 1 point, I always present in his class, participated in his class and shows that I am not taking this class just to get an A but because I am interested to learn. That's why he was never rude to me. And I thank him for that.
Textbook is a must!(he wrote it). Although the tests are never on the actual reading material. To pass you must read every description for the picturesmaps in the textbook as well as using "myanthrolab" that comes with the book. Make sure to listen carefully to his lectures and videos. THIS CLASS WAS HARD.
I took this class during the spring semester, and I found it to be an interesting class. However, the professor will lecture for all of class and pops in a video towards the end of class. The tests are also extremely difficult, and unless you read the book, you're toast.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. His tests are nothing like the notes and when you ask questions, he'll try to make you feel bad about it. Take another anthro teacher... he knows his stuff just doesn't know to to teach it. I have a 4.0 overall, currently on my last semester of CC, and this is the only class I've ever had to drop. Worst prof I've ever taken
