Great prof with good sense of humour
interesting but frequently long-winded lectures, unapproachable
Thorough and enjoyable lecturer. Generous marker. Gives helpful advice. Nice.
The best English prof. I have ever had.... very sincere and intelligent
amazing professor
Very sexy!
sincere and approachable, he made potentially complex material accessible and interesting - great lectures. and he's really nice too!
An amazing professor! :)
a great prof...i like the way he incorporates art and music into his lectures
Pretty good lecturer, but more concerned with convincing students that he's still cool than actually teaching.
Great lectures on great books. He is very approachable and the coolest prof at U of T. Go Mount!
he is an awesome lecturer, and one of my favourite profs
Excellent lectures. Uses interesting analogies to other forms of art. Neat insights.
Quite possibly the best English professor I've ever had...he has the most interesting takes on the most boring topics.
One of the best I've ever had.
Professor Mount is awesome. His lectures are clear and tell you exactly what you need to know for essays and the exam. The material is extremely interesting and he has a fun, fresh approach to teaching that's cool.
WONDERFUL professor. There's something for everyone if you take his classes...For the serious student, he's very intelligent and puts a lot of effort into his lectures. For those who enjoy some fun, he's a really funny guy and makes lectures interesting.
Probably the most insightful Prof I have ever had. He really delves into the material and uses visuals and music to enhance great lectures. He even made books I had always hated interesting! The best!
Best prof I've had - very kind, compassionate and has a good sense of humour - doesn't take himself too seriously like other profs...
Intelligent and witty. Can make a domestic epic sound interesting.
Professor Mount is simply the best!!! His lectures are so entertaining and insightful!
lit+crit intro +early can lit. Extremely talented lecturer and instructor. He's the best at directing discussion-getting students to say really intelligent things-he sets an example with himself-intelligent lectures with informal style, brings in relevant + interesting examps we can relate to.
He makes everythinginteresting and is not pretentious. Nice guy too.
This course is the highlight if my week. I look forward to seeing how he will investigate each text and I am always inspired to go further with my own theories. By far the best prof I've had.
This class is the highlight of my week. I don't think I can't compare anyone to Mount. I love his various teaching tools from cartoons to street art to songs and movies. He just makes learning a wonderful experience for those interested in academics and those who aren't.
Mount is kind of funny but lame at times, but at least he knows his material. Too bad the tutorials are redundant and awkward yet still count for marks.
The class is really enjoyable and he seems to connect to the class really well.
i look forward to this class all week! it's absolutely wonderful! mount's lectures are beautiful, creative, and thought-provoking...i strongly recommend his ENG140 courses - its one of those classes that make university such a worthwhile and liberating experience.
This dude rocksss. he's hilarious and the course material is kind of hard. if u have to take an english course i suggest this one cos he can make nething fun. i mean not everyone wud go to a friday afternoon class for nothin ;)
Mount is an ideal modern professor. He draws from many sources outside of literature to make his points. He is meek while clear. He brings authors into the classroom. ENG140 was a highlight of my year.
Friendly, funny, knows how to teach, but assumes everyone has read the novels and talks about stuff you would never need to know for an exam or essay. Go to tutorials for marks and a synthesis of last week's lecture, read the sparknotes for summaries. Easy class, pointless to go to lecture.
Modern teacher who knows how to relate to his students. Uses other materials (movies, music) to relate to the books read. Good selection of reading material. Very funny. Best teachr I have ever had! Take this class. Tutorials are boring.
He is simply the best, most creative and insightful English prof at the University of Toronto.
I nominated Prof Mount for TVO's Big Ideas competition for most inspirational and entertaining professor... I absolutely adored his class! It was something I consistently looked forward to throughout the schoolyear... it was honestly a life-changing experience for me... I couldn't have asked for a better class. =]

Good prof and good book selector.
Screw the tutorials, I'd rather have 3 hours of him. He would explain how to write an essay better anyway. Although, he does go off track a fair bit once in a while. In spite of the TAs, a fairly easy course.
i love nick mount! take this class!
Never take this guy's Graduate Courses. He is only good for undergraduates dazzled by popular acrobatics. Students in his grad classes are there primarily to help him write his book: i.e. give him some ideas to finally push his thesis into publication. He is also piggish: a Hemmingway try-hard.
He was a good lecturer... came prepared with slides and fun stuff to relate the books too. Classes were interesting yet pointless... and were tutorials... Could not go and still do well. Books choices were horrible to me... modern work drives me crazy... maybe i just don't get it... still did OK in the class though! Worthwhile to take!
Best Prof ever! He has quite a secret fanbase!
I absolutely love Professor Mount. Unlike most profs, he actually cares about teaching, and is always so well-prepared. His lectures are well thought out and interesting, and he manages to tie everything together in a cohesive way. I have a total brain crush on him. Take his classes if you can!
Nick Mount has ruined the rest of my university courses. They cannot compare to his course. He has a secret fan club. :)
This is by far the BEST class I have ever had. Having Prof. Mount as one of my first year professors has really set the bar for the rest of my university experience. I would DEFINITELY recommend taking any of his classes.
i want to have this man's babies. he is by far the smartest and funniest man i know. i love this prof.
Prof. Mount's lectures were highly entertaining, even at nine in the morning, and high on content. Pretty fair marker. He is hilarious and one of the department's best teachers. I have a new love for early canadian lit. Is that weird? Only downside the rather large reading list. It's mostly good though. This was the best course I have taken yet.
Professor Mount is one of the most enjoyable professors to listen to. He made me want to attend classes and I truly looked forward to hearing his ideas and opinions on the various works of literature we studied in class. He was well prepared and made sure to considerately answer any questions students brought up in class.
Absolutely spectacular. :D! Like someone else said, he definitely set the bar for the rest of my university courses, after having him for first year! He's witty, charismatic, and I absolutely LOVED the fact that he'd play music relating to the course (and not LAME music!) during the breaks. The only course I looked forward to going to last year!:)
The course started off pretty well, but by the end I could barely make myself attend half the lectures. His obsession with categorizing everything we read into modernism, post-modernism, and post-post-modernism drove me mad! I did not like the books he chose. Good parts: music, and that he had the authors we were reading come in to speak.
BEST prof EVER. Even though the marking was severe and all the power seems to be in the hands of the TA, lectures were really interesting. Don't have to read all the books but just make sure you get in good terms with TA for good marks. Low marks for me but still my favorite class.
Beautifully constructed lectures interweaving an array of interesting subjects: Plato, ennui, gender theories, rock n' roll. Incredible "soundtrack", incredible choice of texts, and a very thought-provoking course. Mount is absolutely inspiring while refreshingly down-to-earth. Challenging/interesting essay topics, easy exam.
The best professor ever! His lectures are absolutely amazing; no words can do them justice. Every Friday was like 2 hours of divine enlightenment. However, the TA's range from excellent to horrible, and they mark your essays, so ignore the "easiness" rating because he's not the one who marks your work.
Do yourself a favour and TAKE THIS CLASS. Prof Mount is beyond amazing. His lectures are incredibly insightful and interesting, and for a Friday afternoon class thats 2 hours long - that's important. I actually WANTED to attend this class. I am planning on going back this year if I have the time...thats how good it was. RIDICULOUS!
He's an inspiration. His lectures & conversations "literally" held me together during a very challenging first year. His dynamic teaching style works well for all learning styles b/c he incorporates music, art, visual &audio elements. I also plan to go back for the fun of it! TA was smart but complained abt Mount often which made him look childish
he's a nice guy when he's on stage however he's not too approachable. a bit pretentious. his lectures are interesting and he makes an attempt to make jokes. i really disliked that he aggressively argued his interpertations of the readings b/c it left little room to provide your own interpertations esp. when it came to writing essays.
He teaches really well, but all his TA's have different grading schemes, which prove to be different for every tutorial (not usually consistent). Some good books for this course.
loooooooove him....his lectures are so interesting, its the only class i really look forward to....even the way he delivers his lectures makes you want to listen......hes the best!
Prof. Mount is a good prof and great at lecturing, but there's something about him which makes me HATE him. Hate may be too strong, but I do strongly dislike him.He tries a but too hard to put on a performance. In his lectures he sometimes goes off on tangents, but they eventually come back to the topic. He's a good lecturer and the material is great
Nick Mount is simply an exquisite talented prof. He teaches well and can relate so many ideas and themes in books to our everyday life. It is truly literature for our time...
THIS CLASS IS KEEPING ME IN SCHOOL! Mount is easy to listen to for 2 hours because he really cares about literature. What makes him cool is that he incorporates different forms of art to help in the student's understanding
MOST AMAZING CLASS EVER! his class is extremely easy to follow. i love the class, will seriously miss it when it's over. the books are great!
WOW just wow. after literature for our time i am desperately seeking more Mount courses to take. one of, if not the, favourite professor of the year. amazing to listen to
I implore everyone to take this course. He is one of the best professors UofT has. His lectures are amazing. Mount has the ability to control the class, as what he says is so insightful and profound. The book choices were wonderful. Additionally, he is able to incorporate various mediums to enhance learning and understanding. BEST PROFESSOR SO FAR
He truly is an amazing professor who deeply cares about his students. His lectures are insightful and he brings in all sorts of media to get his point across. He once said that he spent a good 12 hours on a lecture. There aren't many professors as dedicated as he is.
To listen to him, is to have your perspective of literature and art change. He opens your eyes, and you leave his class wanting to know every fact about...everything.
Possibly the best professor I ever had. Brilliant and also very funny. His lectures are not only informative and fun, but they really make you think. Hey. An added bonus, right?
Best professor I've had at U of T, and fairly certain the best I'll ever have. The only class I felt I was learning something valuable and universal in. By the end of the year, this was the only class I always showed up for.
AMAZING! Wonderful material and lectures. His lectures are very interesting and easy to remember/understand. Uses great examples which relate to everyday life and today's time/society. Great book choices, tone of voice and powerpoints. Take ENG140Y1-it is awesome and Mount is awesome too! My fav prof so far at U of T. :)
This is my 4th year in U of T. I took this course in 1st year and Prof. Mount is the best prof I've had. He is truly 1 of THE MOST inspirational profs. I don't even like contemporary literature but I LOVED his lectures. People actually showed up to the Fri 2-4 lectures every week. Just sit in on his classes even if you don't take it. U will learn.
He is absolutely brilliant, a fact compounded by his complete lack of ego and self-deprecating humour.
amazing prof-i miss this lecture-best prof at U of T-take this course!
Best Prof, very motivating. Interesting book list, author visits were amazing. This class made me fall in love with English
BEST. PROF. EVER. AT U OF T. TAKE THIS COURSE. IT WILL BE THE MOST MEMORABLE IN YOUR ENTIRE UNDERGRAD CAREER.
The course is brilliant and so is the professor, not to mention friendly and helpful.
I heard he used to be a stripper.
A lot of what he says is very general and obvious, but his analysis of the texts improves greatly as the course progresses. The texts aren't that great (especially 2nd term), but he is extremely approachable, helpful, intelligent, engaging, and funny. His lectures can get a bit boring, but the class is still extremely enjoyable. Fair marker.
You will come out of each lecture feeling like an intellectual. Nick Mount is witty, down-to-earth and on many counts "adorable". The author visits are something to look forward to! Also a very manageable workload if you are in the sciences (like me). Not "easy" but nothing worthwhile is.
i canot stress how amazing this course was. my other classes paled in comparrsion, so i guess in a way this course ruined my first year becuase no other lectures could measure up to his. his readings of "Daddy" and "At the Quinte Hotel" were particularily moving.
Great, engaging
Even with depressing content he found some way to both intrigue and uplift the atmosphere. Very talented, humble, and all around great person
Truly amazing lecturer. Had him in my first year and though I didn't do as well as I had hoped, going to class was a real treat. Had some great insights and really used a variety of media forms to encourage us to broaden our perspective on the meaning of 'art'. Simply phenomenal! :)
funny, brillaint, amazing. i could go on. though the class was difficult, it's what he's there for. to challenge us and make us better! He would crack jokes to lighten tension and was humble. TAKE THIS CLASS
The greatest. Simple as that. Absolutely adored him and his class, made going to lectures so worth it. Loved the "Lit for Our Time Soundtrack"
Mount was so kind and funny. He is so down to earth and not at all stuck up or professory. Just a cool guy with good ideas. A bit overly sentimental at times, but his classes were thoroughly entertaining.
This was a great class that concreted my interest in an English POSt. Mount is an enthusiastic, wonderful professor who cares about keeping the interest of his students and broadening their horizons with various media platforms dispersed throughout the class. Highly recommended, it was my favourite first year class!
Nick Mount is amazing! He is brilliant, witty, funny, engaging and I could just go on and on. I look forward to his class and I am never dissapointed. He always makes class interesting and when he reads passages from a text or the entire text itself (poems) you cant help but pay attention. He's captivating, especailly while reading Prufrock.
Incredible! One of my favourite professors! Always looked forward to his classes, great music and even better when he has guests visit the lectures. TAKE THIS COURSE IF YOU CAN, YOU WON'T REGRET IT.
So amazing! He leaves you feeling like an equal when you talk to him. Make sure you attend his last class. Such a moving presenter. Loved his class so much!
His lectures are like a delicious gourmet meal for the mind and spirit.
Interesting, and super foxy
My favourite professor. He's well spoken and hilarious--always keeps his students interested. The class itself is a bit of a challenge, but it's worth the effort. His lectures are brilliant...he is very friendly and approachable as well. Very dedicated to his profession. Amazing.
Lit for Our Time got me to critically think and analyze not only literature, but everything around me. Mount is a brilliant professor who offers such intellect and knowledge. Definitely my favorite class and my favorite prof.
Inspiring and insightful. Has influenced me beyond words. Great teacher and role model.
No question he's intelligent and inspiring, but Mount's uniqueness lies in his superior sincerity towards the materials and his students. When approached, he's incredibly helpful. This class shapes how I perceive literature. This is a prof that you will always remember and be thankful to him.
Prof Mount has made me a cynic. I don't believe there is a better prof at U of T than him! A professor that can give you chills, hold your attention for 2 hours on a Friday afternoon, and make you fall in love with not only him but every book on the syllabus is Nick Mount.
overall, i enjoyed him but he's pretty overrated.
Great prof, class was sooo much fun
I was over my course limit but chose to stay in the class for no credit anyway. It was that good. (Luckily, I dropped another course and got to keep my grade for this one!) I will take all his classes, if possible.
Best prof I've had. I took ENG140 so I could have Nick Mount and he exceeded my expectations. Friendly, fun, funny, and cool - very enthusiastic. Take his class!! You leave the lecture feeling like you've LEARNED something, you've been challenged to THINK - exactly what university is supposed to be like. An incredible man, Prof. Mount is.
Loved him, amazing voice/presence. Interesting always, great course content, engages in tutorials near the end of the year, friendly, funny, personable, came to final exam to say goodbye to people as they left. LOVE HIM
Don't get me wrong, Nick Mount is a fantastic professor, but he is definitely overrated. His lectures are really great, but they're mostly based on his opinion. As a result, they don't help a lot when it comes to studying for the actual exam.
Amazing prof! Didn't like the course much but loved going to his lectures. Knows what he's talking about and is totally hilarious! Lectures are more of his opinion rather than fact, but are still very helpful.
Best prof by far
LOVE HIM!
Hands down, an amazing professor. Readings may be heavy if you aren't much of a book reader to begin with. I'll be auditing some of his lectures this year again just because they are so enthralling.
Nick Mount set the bar too high for my first year. I'm in my third year now and no professor has ever had the impact on me that he did. He inspired me to value my English degree, my education, and my life. Many of the books on the syllabus remain some of my favourites (Lolita, Godot). If you take one course at U of T, it has to be this one.
He's a cool guy; very interested in what he does. All his lectures seem to be based on his opinions and although i could see his point of view, most of the time i disagreed. I took ENG140 and didn't exactly like the course or it's materials but none the less, a nice guy.
He is a good prof, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Easy-going atmosphere in class.
Great enthusiastic professor. His lectures were interesting, a lot was said and sometimes hard to follow and write it all down but OK in general. I ended up really enjoying the course.
An amazing professor. Blew my mind every lecture, really made you think about the novels and poems. Made hilarious jokes quite often, really enthusiastic. He was given a standing ovation after each lecture. I am not kidding. He's that good. The only downfall with this course is the TAs... they are very arrogant and snobby. Mount is gold though.
Incredible! I left every lecture feeling slightly different than when I arrived. Nearly every lecture brought me to tears. He really puts the works into perspective and speaks passionately about the literature. Truly inspiring!
Professor Mount is Excellent in teaching English courses!!!
This man is the reason why U of T has the reputation it has. By far the most inspiring person you could ever be taught by. It was the greatest privilege to have been taught by Prof Mount. He is the true definition of what all educators should strive to become. Not a simple task, I assure you of that!
What has not been said about Prof Mount? He is the ultimate professor and probably changes many students lives by sharing his passion for literature. A brilliant man.
Nick Mount is clever and funny and a pleasure to listen to. He teaches you how to read between the lines and picks some great novels
He's passionate about his work and has quite a few interesting hobbies - including tracking down Banksy. His class made my first year.
The best proff ive ever had
Great Professor and nice person.
Nick Mount is by far the most inspiring human being I have ever come across. I was left in tears by the end of most lectures, and it was very clear that he cared very much for his students and his jobs. Even if you aren't into English, I would highly suggest any of his classes. It's an amazing life experience to be taught by this man.
Nick Mount was one of my favorite profs ever! He was enthusiastic, funny, down to earth, and exceptionally intelligent. His lectures were interesting and really easy to listen to, I never wanted to miss a class (not even kidding). You can tell he really cares about his students and he is so well-loved. Take a course with him if you get the chance!
I was recently taking a semester abroad in Ireland when the person in front of me in my Modern English class turned around with a YouTube link of a recorded lecture on T.S Eliot's "The Waste Land" and said "HAVE YOU SEEN THIS GUY?! HE'S BLOODY AMAZING!" It was Mount's lecture. His rep proceeds him, even across the ocean! Best lecturer I've had.
Mount was amazing. One of the nicest and most intelligent professors I've had in U of T. He is very understanding and very open to help students with whatever help they may need. He legitimately wants to see his students succeed, and that's not something that can be said about a lot of professors. I wish I could go back and take his class again
while interesting to listen to, the lectures aren't even about the books you read, just random things that he thinks are related somehow
It seemed like there was nothing nick said in lectures that I couldn't just find on google. The lectures are boring, uninspired, and refer way too much to irrelevant content. This course is mostly self-taught. We don't learn much about the books we read. Nick focuses too much on trying to get the class to clap for him, not enough on teaching.
really boring lectures. half the stuff prof mount talks about is pretty random. out of all my classes this year, this was definitely the least engaged and most boring. i found that i hardly ever took anything away from lecture, which is a let down cause some of the texts were pretty good. i don't recommend this course or this prof.
The best professor you will ever have. What professors SHOULD BE, but more importantly, a human being.
No 'textbook' but tons of novels/plays/short stories/etc. Professor Mount's lectures made a 4 pm class on Friday worth showing up to. He reminds you what you can get when you push your mind to look at a novel differently, and he gives you a whole new view of the books you may have read before. I'm going to miss this course......
Legends only. Nick Mount is an absolute genius. I don't even know where to begin. He genuinely cares for his students and his lectures are incredible. Going to lecture every week was like having my soul cleansed. Nick took me to church. From Hedwig to Lolita, this year was a trip. I am a better person because of ENG140. GOODBYE TO NICK MOUNT ONLY
legends only! Nick Mount is wise but not pretentious, and his lectures are incredibly interesting. Tutorials were awesome as well. All of the essays were interesting and the exam was very fair. Books were great, Nick Mount is a boss, I loved this course. I'll be sitting in on lectures next year. GOODBYE TO NICK MOUNT ONLY
Nick Mount was by far my favourite prof of first year, the content and the lectures were really interesting if you like modern literature. He is really easy to talk to outside of class and super helpful and just in General a solid dude
Mount is a true gem of a prof. Super engaging, loves discussion but wont make you talk if you dont want to. Tutorials are important for highlighting the key points of the works. Final was easy if you read most of the books. Lectures arent necessary to attend but youll want to because he is great.
Nick Mount is a great professor. His essays are only moderately difficult, and most people do pretty well if they put just a little bit of effort in. He is a really great lecturer but not always approachable, and you can tell he prepares a lot for each lecture. His class would be very fun to audit because his lecture style is very engaging.
If you are an English major at U of T, it is vital that you take Nick Mount. We had some amazing conversations, and his lectures are interesting and illuminate how you think about the texts holistically. His class, combined with my awesome TA, ready started my experience with English at U of T strongly and set the standard hight.
Wow what a guy. His lectures were amazing, didn't miss any that I didn't have to, as well as hilarious. It's clear that he cares a lot about the class and about getting students into the books
An incredible prof who brings literature and our current world together in fascinating ways. Always engaging, witty and funny he is class is a must take.
Professor Mount's lectures are so inspirational! I took the course for my breadth requirement and I certainly recommend his classes!
Makes me wanna cry, but in a good way
A full bald head of delight and enlightenment. Coming out of class one will feel wiser than when they entered. Lovely prof and lots of interactions with students, amazing lectures and unpacking of literature. Just amazing person in general, A M A Z I N G.
His lectures are my favourite class to attend every week. He really puts himself into his lectures and you can tell he is passionate. I am going to be sad when the class is over!
English is usually tough to get solid marks in, but his lectures are awesome.
This class was always fun and educational. I loved the books we read and Professor Mount always made the lectures interesting and engaging. I would definitely recommend this class and prof, as long as you are a fast reader and can keep up with reading a novel every week - 2 weeks (you can pass without reading all of them).
one of my favs in my whole degree. Don't think he teaches 140 anymore but i'd definitely look out for him! And yeah in this class, attendance wasn't "mandatory" per se, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't attend.
Many love him and I can see why but I found his lectures a bit too theatrical - it was like he was putting on a show rather than just talking about literature. I can see why that works for a lot of people but not my preferred style of lecture.
I felt enlightened after taking English with Prof Mount. His lectures are extremely relevant and insightful, always taking the reading at hand very seriously but not failing to make them extremely interesting. I couldn't recommend Prof Mount more, and only wish he taught all English courses!!!
Professor Mount is easily the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are so moving and so beautifully constructed, and he is such an approachable and warm person that I was never anxious to seek him out if ever I had stray questions or just wanted a chat. His syllabus is really well thought out, too. An amazing person!
Professor Mount's lectures feel like TED Talks, in that they feel really well-thought out, deep in detail, and entertaining. They'll leave you with a brand new understanding of the book you just read, and whether you like the book or not, it'll be intensely engaging. I even loved his lectures on books I hated.
When I took ENG140 with Prof Nick Mount back in first year as an undeclared major, I described him as a KING. Currently, in my third year majoring in English (a decision inspired by HIM and ENG140!), I am able to confirm that this man is still a KING. He is so approachable during office hours and gives great feedback/advice on essays. And he CARES!
Professor Mount is the professor you want to have when you go to university. He is a king. His TAs are all gems, too. Beautiful class to have as a first year.
I found Prof. Mount to be way overrated. He is a retirement age snake in a suit, and tries really hard to appeal to 17-19 year old teens, like thats not creepy at all. He only cares about himself, and anyone who has even a little bit of perceptive power can see it.
Nick Mount is the absolute best. You will absolutely not regret taking his class... lectures are so captivating and unique, and he will most likely make you feel excited to read the assigned texts.
I agree with the person a couple of posts down (gave him a 1/5). Prof. Mount comes across like he cares, but it is all a carefully constructed and practiced act to further his career. Deep down he is a selfish and uncaring person only motivated by his own advancement in the dept.
Having just taken his 4th year class last term, I can honestly say that he is the most useless professor I've ever had. He reminds me a LOT of Trump, big smiles and lots of effort to put up a gold facade, but underneath--pure indifference.
I have never had a professor as thoughtful as Nick amount!! His lectures are very captivating, and overall made for an amazing class experience. I can say that I truly have learned so much from this course.
His insights were shallow and his lectures were robotic and ultra-rehearsed to the point they sounded like he was reading straight from wikipedia, which made the class boring. His slides (which he doesn't post) are highly unorganized, and riddled with errors which makes studying impossible. Does not know how to teach. Worst prof I've ever seen.
I didn't learn a single thing from this professor. He is so unhealthy looking and wheezing all the time from all his smoke breaks, that it is honestly distracting. At one point, the guy I sat next to said "this guy makes me lose the will to live". All his good reviews come from 1st years who don't know anything and have no experience. Terrible prof
I can't believe how high the ratings are for this prof/course. Mount's lecture style got tired after about 2 weeks. He loves to hear himself speak and wAY overshares. Young, impressionable students love him, and he revels in it. It's honestly kind of grimy. If you genuinely love literature, take Warley's 150 instead, I BEG you.
Dr. Mount is one of the greatest deep-thinker. However it's my own problem to not be able to finish course readings as I have to focus more on other courses, I am also not too interested in his reading selection.
He is okay, don't like the course find it incredibly boring. I do not have time for the readings and when I do them they put me to sleep. Lectures are 2 hours each and I find them incredibly boring. If you love literature and are an impressionable teenager you will love this course. My Ta kinda sucked too.
Amazing intellectual perspectives allowing for better techniques of analysis and consideration when reading. Good combination of multiple literary formats, including plays, poems, novels, and movies. Interesting perspectives offered in the form of reading what Prof Mount considers important literature of our time.
Love his lectures
I loved this class so very much! An absolute shame that 2021-22 is the last year Mount is teaching ENG140. It is truly the end of an era! Before the final, he told us: don't worry. Just show us what you have learned. And it ended up being true! As long as you have something to say about the literature taught, you will do well!
I agree with all the negative reviews here. Mount is is only popular with kids (literally) who are new to university and are impressed with big words and a big show but no substance.
Nick Mount should be the blueprint for university teaching. One of those rare courses where you always look forward to the next lecture. There are a lot of assigned readings though, so make sure you don't fall more than a week or so behind. You write three essays, so develop a relationship with your TA and you can easily secure an A- or higher.
Mount is all flash and superficiality, but lacks any substance. His lectures seem cool because the classroom is a theatre and he tries really hard to impress first years with cool new words, but to anyone beyond first year its so pathetically obvious he's trying to win the good reviews of the newest and more impressionable young students.
Nick Mount is absolutely phenomenal. I highly, highly recommend ENG140.
Nick Mount was probably my favourite professor this year. He is genuinely so passionate about the books he teaches, and it's hard to not be interested when he is speaking about them. I would take any course taught by Nick Mount.
Probably the coolest professor at this school, he's funny, knowledgeable and just the right amount of cynical, but unfortunately Prof. Mount is retiring from the course this year. The grading is a bit tough and there's quite a few readings (obviously), however his choice of literature is really interesting and diverse!
Easily most enjoyable class I had all year. Not only is material great, but prof clearly has immense passion and knowledge for the books he teaches. Super captivating lectures. Although, it is hard to attain 80s. I felt like my hard work went unseen because of the grade curve. Since it's worth a full credit it has big impact on GPA. Still loved it.
Controversial take, but I did not like Nick Mount. His lectures and sentimental way of teaching get old really fast, and when I ran into an issue with a TA acting completely out of line and singling me out in an inappropriate way, Mount brushed me off and sided with the TA. Those two completely ruined any desire I had to study English.
He's chill. A good, well-rounded prof! :)
It was always a pleasure to attend Professor Mount's lectures every Friday — they brought me joy, relaxation, and knowledge. I took his ENG140 course from Fall 2021 to Winter 2022, which was his final year teaching the course before retirement. He was kind, humorous, thoughtful, and inspiring.
Great lectures, not manditory but I liked going just cause I enjoyed hearing what he had to say. Earned the hype
