intellectual & enthusiastic
Made the class fun and understandable
he made it fun
Good teacher. Fun class.
Well any teacher that likes rage against the machine Rules
pretty good teacher.
Man, he the best unpossible to beat

You are bears crap, they crap every where, your work is crap - in class quote
Nice guy, but really hard to get passed a C+
The only english teacher that I ahve ever had that wasn't obsessed with himself.
Wonderful Teacher, really cares about students!
He's a great teacher! Way better than most
didnt like his style of teaching.. nice guy tho. he does care what the students want - which is great
Can you say Icabod Crane? While Nick is very intelligent and knows his subject quite well, he DOES NOT take kindly to anyone who asks him a question he cannot answer. Get on his bad side and you'll never get more than a D.

Intelligent and articulate, loves a good arguement, but has little patience for silliness
Nick is an awesome teacher!!!
What a great guy. Always clear and expalined everything until we got it. Helpful abd fun!! Really fair marker, i wish he taught more upper level classes!!
Fun and interesting. A little dry at times, but overall a great instructor. Too bad he doesnt teach 221!
get off your high horse buddy! if this guy takes a dis-liking to you expect him to accuse you of cheating
His topics are very interesting
MY GOD! I agree with everyone that doesn't like this teacher. It's frusterating to struggle with a class because your teacher doesn't particularly like you. Since when should we get judged and graded due to differences of opinion?
What an ass, the man does not take kindly to anyone who opposes his opinion. Your paper is marked out of interest to him not ability to write. He is anally retentive and needs to get his head read!
Great teacher, seems like a nice guy, too.
Nic was a great prof, we didn't realize how great until he left for medical reasons this semester and we got a new prof for 221!
very energetic and knows his stuff but picks everyting apart and i would advise you to know the bible and all that stuff b/c it is talked about a lot! BAD choice of novels!!! very boring
Nick is the greatest prof ever. However, he's taking the semester off for medical reasons. Very unfortunate. Get Well Soon Nick!
love this teacher, he is the one reason i am now very successful and have a strong head
Very smart and funny.
One of the most amazing profs I've had at TRU. He's very helpful and witty. Uses obscure TV analogies, but the help. I wasn't interested in the material, but Nick made it interesting. If you don't do well in his class, it's not because you, "oppose his opinion," it's because you can't back up your argument.
Hard marker, definatly not an easy course, he is interesting at times, but also can be very dry. You gotta be able to read into things, simple understand won't suffice, definatly wouldn't take him again. Overal, I'd say if your sciences, don't take him.
he's a good teacher, but hard. wants his students to be prepared for next eng courses down the road. if you're not taking anymore eng i suggest taking someone else. unless you have a very good understanding of indepth stories and novels.
I found him to be very unclear and unhelpful!! He did not like to explain what he wanted in any sort of project and did not have any straight forward anwers to any of the students questions. He did not make it clear what he wanted or expected, yet he marked as thought it was a higher level coarse. I wouldnt suggest him at all.
absolutely horrible. I would never suggest taking any english 110 with him as a professor. He makes no sense and dont expect him to help you have questions. Expects you to look deeply into essays and novels, but for english 110 its almost impossible. Nick made me never want to take another english class in my life. And dont expect good grades..EVER
Fabulous professor! Very helpful and extremely knowledgeable - really knows his stuff! Assignments are interesting and his lectures are very informative and fun. I would highly recommend taking a class with him! Definitely among my favorite profs!
Absolutly horrible. Without a doubt the worst prof I have ever had. In 3 years of University I've never met a prof who killed a class as effectivly as he did. Don't take him.
Helping me to read in ways I've never read before. If you're looking for a prof that will blow by the material to get you an easy 'A', then not the right professor for you. Or the right type of school, for that matter. (all who fit this description, try Hamburger University)
brilliant... absolutely hilarious... knows exactly what he's talking about and provides an encouraging, accepting learning environment! i love going to this class!
He was rude and never stayed on topic. If you have to miss class for whatever reason and he says he'll let you make up the missing work he's lying and will "change his mind" when you return.
Good prof, but boring reading material! If you are very analytical then this prof is for you.
Very smart and orders cheap texts!
He wrote "websight" on the board on the first day of class. Enough said for a composition teacher.
makes no sense, totally off topic, very confusing
I am very impressed with Nick; he is a lot of fun and loves what he does. He is really fair, and his marking really helped me to improve my writing.
Hilarious! Loved the obscure humour. Some stories a little difficult but Nick made it fun and worth it in the end. Radiohead rules pomo or not!
Pawliuk is not a nice teacher. And he doesn't trust his students honesty at all. i HIGHLY dislike him.
Absolutly the worst prof. If you have him drop the course, change your major what ever you have to do to get out!!! If you disagree with him your screwed, if he doesn't like you your screwed. In otherwords RUN AWAY!!!
SO boring and often gets totally off topic. Would not recommend taking another course with him ... not too hard of a marker. Often talks about religion and relates it to EVERYTHING. He condems you for not being an English freak.
Good teacher. You must show up to class, due to surprise quizzes, and there are a lot of books required for the course. If you dont like reading books, dont take this course. The entire course is based upon the readings. Otherwise, his humour is great, and his knowledge about history is fantastic as well.
Excellent Prof who really knows his subject. Made a possibly boring composition course really intresting, mostly by relating everything to politics. Expects alot of students and the work is challenging, but he makes it really enjoyable. He's always ready to help students and with hard work, a good grade is easily maintainable.
Solid Prof. Show up to class and you'll be fine.
If you miss a class expect to fail.. either than that he can be the worst or the best depending on each students experience...Some people call him challenging I call him fustrating!
great english teacher! lots of brutal reading but he clarifys the books as best as he can during class time. helpful and very passionate about teaching.
Really didn't like him at first. Later found him very helpful and willing to answer any questions. Makes a huge effort to make the class interesting. I enjoyed having him as a teacher.
Show up and you'll be fine. Looks at political aspects and makes some shocking revelations; highly interesting. Pretty funny guy too who tries really hard to relate to his students and keep up with the modern world. Very nice and helpful.
Nick is a great teacher. Don't take this class if you want "easy A's". If you want to actually learn something (especially if mommy and daddy didn't pay for you to go to university), then this is the class for you. Nick is hilarious, but you need to have a certain amount of wit to understand his jokes.
This guy is a joke, he is literally a peice of****. He tests you on random quotes from books and his course has nothing to do with english.
Midterm was a joke - memorizing quotes, publishing dates, etc. was not useful at ALL to the course. This guy is totally pretentious and a bit of a snob. The course is interesting, and his book choices are good, but he doesn't give enough small assignments - he lumps the course into a few large essays. Overall, I was disappointed...
great teacher!
Overall very interesting. Don't take this course if you want an easy grade. WARNING for all student taking ENG 111: he makes you read James Joyce and you will probably want to end yourself because of it. Tests can be challenging as he tends to make questions on random quotes and dates. On the plus side he pulls topics together in an intersting way
The course was a a little confusing, learned really useless info unless you are an English buff. Tests are hard and he is a hard marker.
He bases everything on religion. He puts things into religious context i didnt think were possible. He makes you read James Joyce which will make you want to kill yourself and best of all he admits it. If you dont attend class you will be completely lost and do very poorly. I don't excel in English and this class didn't make it any easier for me
overall not a bad guy. does keep track of who's attending and gives quite a bit of homework for a first year engl class. is a super hard marker, but in the end your writing will be a bit better. definitely not recommended if you want a high mark with little effort put into it. With him its not gonna happen.
Highly recomended, interesting, cares about his students and their marks. He is pationate about what he teaches and his enthusiasm is contageous. Go to class, see him if you need help on papers, make sure you understand his testing method, read the books, and enjoy a good class taught by someone who knows what they are talking about.
He refers everything, and I mean EVERYTHING to religion! Even things you would never have thought had anything to do with God will be brought to your attention. Enjoy reading James Joyce! :(
I did not like him at first, as he referred everything to religion and god, but i think most of the 110 and 111 english profs do. He helps you if you are struggling or are misled about an assignment. His exams are kind of hard and unfair so you better study.
Pawliuk is great. He cares about you and wants you to get a good mark. Do not hesitate to ask him questions. He also gives you many opportunities to get him to look over your rough drafts of essays. He does do these tests that are full of trivial information, that you won't remember but they're not worth much, except the midterm. Great class.
I find him highly arbitrary. I do not recommend this course. He is highly whimsical in his grading tactics.
Nick is awesome. Clear and interesting lectures, also makes it clear what you need to do for assignments and is willing to help if you need it. His midterms are fact-based and aren't subjective, unlike other english midterms. Also really interesting texts that he's chosen. Wish I could have him for all of my english classes.
He is a very hard marker and has his standard way to high. His quizzes are borderline impossible and is all pointless memorization that will never help you in your future
Nick is great. If you're at all interested in literature you'll like this course, between the interesting subject matter and his observations on the reading material. The assigned books (and clips from Apocalypse Now) are excellent, never boring. Nick himself is funny and easy to talk to. You'll get something from the course if you work hard.
Unless you know a lot about the bible you will probably have difficulty in his class. He is a very hard marker, as well as his tests are next to impossible. Only four people passed our mid term. Lectures were very boring and dry.
Nice guy, passionate about subject and encourages new ideas. Final Assignment in fun. However, beat literature is PAINFUL and he doesn't provide much feedback.
Nice guy, passionate about subject and encourages new ideas. However doesn't provide much feedback.
Hard marker. Do not take his class if you want to score.
Not sure about all the bible references everyone talks about, didn't use a single one all semester. Overall, as a person I really like him. He's funny and nice, and helpful. The only thing I have a problem with is his marking, he is quite the hard marker. He also focuses more on grammar than the idea you're putting forward when marking as well.
Took Into to Prose Fiction and very much enjoyed it. The books and the short stories were enjoyable to read and it is easy to maintain a good mark. Small quizzes and small amount of essays to do. Would definitely have him as a teacher again.
Hard marker. No good feedback. Feedback always says something like "(Name) This is a great essay you have. Watch for some spelling and grammar. C-"
Took his class a couple years ago...he likes to think outside the box and encourages you to do the same. Had me reading material that I still use in fourth year. If you enjoy English, Nick's your man.
Nick was honestly the best english professor I've had so far. He's really passionate about English, which made me enjoy the class. His insight, opinions, and the way the his classes are structured are great. He's also really funny, which is a plus!
Nick is a great professor, he's definitely passionate, very funny and is always willing to help if you ask. However he is a very tough marker. He has ridiculously high standards for essays and doesn't give very good feedback. Often it will be " (Name) very original and interesting essay, watch run-on sentences - B". Also his exams are REALLY tough.
I took him as a prose fiction teacher. I'm not good at english (C+ to B average). I got an A-. He's a teacher I'd recommend if you are a BFA student because his assig. have to do with ART. Funny teacher. The religion thing is bs. Test: Hard. I got a B. Study a lot. Essays: Be passionate about what you write. Pres.: Easy. Don't stress.
He's actually amazing, like if you're into books at all (other that Twilight or whatever) and don't mid thinking sometimes (hence not Twilight) then you will love him. I actually walk out of this class totally mind blown sometimes... And he doesn't mention religion that often, and when he does it's because it's actually quite relevant.
He's pretty great, really fun to talk to, knows a lot of stuff. Pretty good teacher too, helps you if you're confused about anything
Absolutely hilarious. I spend the whole class laughing. Not that clear on projects but if you make a comment he will extend the due date no questions asked, so that was pretty sweet. Overall, super nice and funny guy, I would like to take a class with him again.
I have tried many English professors at TRU and had a hard time. English is not my first language, so having a good professor is important to me. He was engaging and funny. Would definitely recommend for any student who wants to improve their speaking and writing skills, especially my fellow international students! Thanks for a great semester, Nick
Nick is a great prof, i really enjoyed his class. He can be unclear at times but you can ask him a million questions until you understand. He will always give extensions on work. He is also very funny always trying to make the class laugh!!!
I ended up actually being very pleasantly surprised just at how enjoyable the course was. Nick's lectures were really interesting and I enjoyed a lot of the readings. Essay topics were very open-ended and he even let us compare songs to one of the books. I never thought I'd enjoy writing an essay! The presentation is leniently marked as well.
Nick is a great professor. I would definitely recommend his class if you have a sense of humour whatsoever. He's a witty, soft-spoken guy who you can tell really cares about the material. If he makes Biblical references, it's only because it's relevant to understanding the text. He also listens to good music. Great professorwould take again!
I think I spent half of the class laughing and the other half re-examining my life. Nick is a great guy as well as being a great professor. His class was really interesting. I loved his choice of short stories and lecture topics. Study for the midterm. The final project is your chance to be creative. I'm actually going to miss having this class.
Nick is a wonderful guy, however he focuses on themes he may not necessarily test on so it's critical you pay attention to the details of assigned novel. That being said the assignments are based on those themes. Novel themes were a major part of his lectures and were very interesting. Overall approachable guy and I would recommend him to others.
I loved taking Nick's Intro to Fiction class! He made every class interesting and he clearly understood everything about the subject. Would definitely take a class from him again :)
Was an awesome prof, super approachable prof that would help you when you have a question on your writing and gives you good feedback! His classes are always fun and he has his own sense of humor that he brings into the class with him! Time flew by in his course!
I enjoyed his classes. Sometimes the lectures would get kind of off point, or it didn't always seem like it would matter if you showed up, but assignments were really great and he would always answer any questions you would have; his feedback was really helpful. I would take his class again!
He is quite good but you need to be sure to have a university level grammar or you are out
10/10 would marry, pls watch his hands as he talks. Resembles a nice bird. Cutest person you will ever meet. Made the course bearable / as fun as writing papers can possibly be.
He is an amazing teacher, so passionate about topics and he has a very intelligent sense of humour. He sets you up for success and it is up to you to achieve it. He has such a cute and genuine personality. By far the best English teacher I have ever had. He has made english really enjoyable throughout the semester
Nick has to be my favourite prof !! I hate english and paper writing but he makes it so easy to succeed. He lets you pick topics you feel passionate about and is always there for help when needed. If you do the work you will get a good mark!! TAKE THIS COURSE!!!
Great instructional technique. Relaxed and reasonable. Gives solid feedback. Will go through your essay with you before due date. Passionate and interesting.
Nick is hilarious and his class is always fun. His assignments are straightforward and allow for you to focus on what is interesting to you. He makes a genuine effort to help you do your best in the class. I recommend his classes to everyone. Seriously, if you're trying to decide whose class to take, I'm telling you to take his.
Nice guy, very accessible, reasonable with deadlines, strong feedback
Awesome english prof!! His assignments are very straightforward clear and easy to understand.
Awesome prof! Incredibly helpful and very funny which makes class enjoyable. Although he can be a bit picky with marking, it's nothing unreasonable.
Nick was a good, clear instructor overall. The class wasn't exactly inspirational , but he was a failry clear marker.
Hilarious. Nick is funny, his sense of humour one of a kind. He's super caring about his students, so you often get to leave early. The class is relaxed but yet there is still a fair bit of work that has to be done.
An amazing professor that makes the course relevant and interesting. He also allows for a refreshing amount of creative freedom when writing essays.
This guy caught me cheating on some test but let me finish it anyways... I did not pass the test. I write for a living now and he was by far the most informative prof I've ever had. Especially in regards to the structure and grammar writing.
Me and my friends went from A+ English students to C students by taking this class. I'm a 4.0 student and it dropped my GPA to almost unrecoverable. Expect very low grades for high levels of effort. Entire grade is based off 3 papers and a project. Had to read 6 books in 3 weeks. Absolute cancer. DO NOT TAKE. Lecture is irrelivant to English.
He was my favourite professor. He is really funny when he's trying to make jokes, he explains stuff pretty well and will help you no matter what.
Even after going to many of his office hours for help and writing center appointments for tutoring, I could not boost my mark up to an A. Going to his office hours confused me even more: he told me When I look at your essay, there is nothing wrong with it but you need to go above and beyond the criteria for that A... My 4.13 GPA took a hit.
Wonderful professor! Nick gives clear instructions multiple times to ensure that everyone understands the criteria of each assignment. He also turns many classes into workshops where you can ask for assistance and get advice on your papers so you can correct mistakes before you hand them in. If you put in the effort you will do well!!
He will not carefully instruct you to finish your assignments. You will need to work on your own.
Nick is super helpful and wants all of his students to succeed. Although learning about English in the 1700s can be dry, Nick makes it interesting. He is great at tying old texts to modern topics. He can be a bit of a hard marker, but if you ask him how to improve, he loves to help.
He is very passionate and offers alot of useful help, however, he is probably the hardest marker I have ever had. Overall he is a great teacher, he offers copious amounts of support, is accessible, and you can tell he cares about his class, but don't expect to walk into this class and receive an easy A!
Pawliuk is an incredible prof. He is more than willing to provide help if you show up and ask, and his lectures were super interesting. I am not a lover of English, but I loved this class. It is not super easy, but if you put in the effort, you will be rewarded with a good grade and amazing experience. I would absolutely take this again.
Nick is great professor and gives detailed feedback on papers which helped me improve my writing. His passion for English and his care for his students is so endearing to see and he is always willing to help. Would definitely recommend taking his classes!
Nick Pawliuk was one of my favorite professors at TRU. He was so passionate about what he taught and was always willing to answer any question. From start each class with dog videos to endless jokes in his slides, he kept us interested and engaged every class. He will be greatly missed at TRU. Thank you Nick.
The worst instructor. If you want to SAVE your money run away. You can thank me later.
I can't remember if I already wrote a review for Nick, but I actually took his course years ago and he will forever be one of my favorite professors. I transferred to UVic to complete my degree and was sad to say goodbye to professor Pawliuk and his awesome lectures. 11/10 recommend. He is the best.
An engaging professor who brings dry topics to life. Leverages tools like Unstuck study to help students prep and succeed. Highly recommend for an informative, yet fun class.
