Excellent teacher. Very clear and thorough, explains well, and helpful.

very good prof. without a doubt, but has to slow down a bit

made course material memorable; an amazing teacher for introductory economics
stubborn as hell!!he just wont help you outta class.Maybe hes nice in class cuz of the camera
One of my favorite profs. He teaches economics how its supposed to be taught. If you want to know how the world really works take this course.
He tries to make economics as interesting as it can be. He's got a great intellectual spirit! I think he was born to be a prof.
Good inspriing first year prof. Rumour has it he was on Monty Python!
he's a decent guy, mid-term was easy. the prof for the macro (rose cunningham) was better though.
Cares about the students. ENTHUSIASTIC!! Great first year Prof
A little boring but an all around good guy, also his course is really really easy as long as you do a couple hours of studying before the tests.
Good techer teaching boring material but he does throw a few good jokes in here or there.
He is interesting sometimes, but I think that's because he doesn't choose to teach the interesting parts. I prefered my high school econ teacher.
Interesting subject but prof is more acting than teaching(Boring). When I read book I like the subject but when in class I lose concentration because his way of explaining make you lose concentration.
love this prof, he actually makes econ interesting, gives another perspective on the course material rather than regurgitating the textbook, only problem doesn't give any notes
He's soooooo CHARMING!
He is very interesting but he is very scattered and all over the place. He does not give you questions to do or solutions. If you do not need a lot of guidance in the course then he would be good.
is an interesting prof but i have no idea how he marks his midterms/exams. no partial marks so it is either all or nothing on short answers which means it is very easy to do poorly despite knowing the material. very little help outside of class...kind of an ass outside of class acutally
No no no!!!
Never recommend. Very unfair.
He's a big actor!
I wasn't interested in macro until I took this class. He makes the lectures very interesting and relates what your learning to something you can easily understand. Pretty funny too. Overall great proff, but class attendence is very important because he doesn't teach straight from the text book.
Prof Rowe is really a genius! So smart, in fact, that he is somewhat too tough for undergrads. No matter how much you study, if you don't fully understand EVERYTHING, there is really no way of excelling. He is also a bit disoriented while giving his lectures. And he LOVES big diagrams. If you don't like sketching, drop NOOOOOWW!!!
He may know any thing else but economics. Not smart at all. Arrogant.
best teacher in economics.... all exams are fair...
Probably one of the easier classes ive taken. Didnt watch any lectures, just studied from the book and pulled out a B. He wrote the book and generally goes straight from it. Very animated while teaching lectures which can be really funny.
decent prof, I recommend PASS for extra help
He helped write the book and lectures correspond to it so for exams you can study either one and it pays off. Sometimes he went very slowly on the straight forward sections and ran out of time and had to hurry through the other sections. He is definetly animated and that is funny! He does have a bias when it comes to certain issues.
gets you to listen...sometimes. i found myself sleeping through 90% of the 30% of the lectures i went to. but he's an easy marker
Best prof. Straight forward, no tricks and very interesting.
Very fun, very informative, but tends to fall for popular beliefs. It's a mixed bag. But you should attend this Prof for sure.
love that accent
I love this guy. Was scared to take an economics class for the first time but he took it easy at first. Very funny and entertaining. Take his class!
Interesting speaker, great teacher. Doesn't use Powerpoint, and it's better that way. He wrote the textbook he uses; it compliments the course well. I slept through a lot of classes but still did very well. He is a little stubborn, but an academic of his stature has the right to be. Overall very good.
He was interesting enough to make me switch my major to economics! Although he is interesting, he follows the book exactly, so if you skip, it won't matter. His tests/exams/assignments are easy and straightforward....really wants you to understand and like economics....very passionate about the subject, and I wish he taught higher level courses!
good prof.
i really enjoyed his class, so much so i ended up switching my major.
Not a bad prof if you go to class he has a good teaching method except dont take it in the morning or you will fall asleep, midterms eay but finals are difficult he loves his graphs, and he goes exactly by the book.
Brilliant mind. Brilliant professor. Amazing course.
Dr. Rowe is wasting his talents teaching at Carleton. He has a brilliant mind and he's a great speaker. I added an Economics minor to my program as a result of taking his course, and every prof I've had since has been a disappointment by comparison.
loved his class
He'll convert you to Economics.
I can't stand the way he teaches. I also hired poor TAs. You can tell that he loves the subject, and that he could be a good prof, but he spends a lot of the time scaring students...don't be late for a class, or leave early.
Overall good class. It was fairly easy to get through even without the lectures (follows the book... I guess that's because he wrote it)! The onyl negative is those huge dramatic pauses he makes every 10 seconds while lecturing. It gets annoying after a while.
If you struggle in economics you cannot prepare enough for the exams. Try to fish out his previous tests - not what the text book prepares you for.
Awesome prof, really good speaker (although I think he may have missed his true calling- he should have been an actor). Willing to help out students, plus he wrote the textbook AND films his classes for CUTV, so if you miss class you can catch up.
Probably the best professor I've ever had. Brilliant thinker! I switched my major to Economics after taking his class.
I didnt have him this semester. i actually havent had him since econ 1001. i think its note worthy that he is out of your league. if you think you have a chance with him guess again. He's tall and very attractive. he made me falll in deep love with economics but deeper with him. im not sure if he plays football. and im not sure if i...whhaooaa!
I love this prof. He is awesome... I still have him next sem. Always sit in the front to see him clearer!
spaz, but that's what made it fun. Read the book, you'll probably understand it more so if you don't like graphs
Very clear, articulate, and uses graphs / diagrams very effectively to help explain what he is saying. He does skip some stuff you need to know though, that you can get from the textbook, so I'd recommend reading that anyway. Overall, best professor I had this semester.
Loved him. He wrote the textbook so if you read it you're set.
Great teacher and speaker. He teaches very well and keeps class interesting... usually. I would recommend him for ECON 1000. YOU HAVE TO READ THE BOOK TO DO WELL. Reading the book is more important than going to class. Exams are easy if you put in the time.
Really smart and creative prof. You can do good in this class if you understand the diagrams.
His Accent Har Har Har.. I had to retake this class on CUTV because i got d- first year.
His lectures are not structured at all and therefore his lectures all over the place. Plus the textbook is no help becuase he wrote it and it is just like attending one of his confusing lectures.
this guy is the only reason caleton has a econ department.without him is like no snow for winter.keep it up nick! his text book is garbage but i mean which book isnt .
Great Professor, best and most interesting at carleton, you could easily pass micro and macro first year without attending his lectures, but his lectures are the best thing about going to carleton. He's very passionate about economics and works with stats canada.
Didn't enjoy his teaching style, gave up going to class after a while. Just read the textbook. I really don't understand why people love him
Amazing Professor, knowledgable, approachable, funny, qualified, and goes to great length to make sure that the concepts are understood. Great delivery with lectures as well
He seems to know more about Economics than other professors, but he cannot show them clearly to me.
He riminds me of my dad, whom I do not like, but I like professor Rowe. Go figure. He is very clear, very thorough, even funny at times. Also he does not tolerate chattering during his class. He will actually single people out when they are talking. I appreciate that because most profs just let it go, but it's so distracting!
He's got SWAGGGGG!!! Best prof ever! Take his class!!!!!
Takes a considerable amount of time to explain each concept, does so thoroughly, usually with examples that are easy to understand. Does not tolerate any bs, which is a good thing because why go to class if you are just going to chat? Overall a good lecturer with considerable understanding of subject matter and a fair competence for teaching.
Very helpful, knowledgeable professor.
Great prof! Really knows his stuff and is interesting to listen to.
What a joke. To say his lectures are useless is an understatement. However, he is very knowledgeable and the class is extremely easy. Just read the textbook and you will never have to go.
Moves really fast, but knows his stuff and is always open for questions in his office hours. Funny and one of the better intro to ECON profs you can get
Probably my favourite prof! He made me love econ. His lectures are overall interesting. He's funny and very clear when explaining concepts with his diagrams and graphs. Don't be fooled by the tough exterior—he's very approachable when it comes to questions. If you understand his lectures and the textbook you'll do great!
the best prof in economics department
The King of Carleton's Economics Department. One of the best professors who's taught me.
Follow the textbook and you will be fine.
What an amazing prof! Really explains every concept in a way that anyone can understand, even someone with no Economics background. You have to attend lectures and take good notes, as he doesn't use powerpoint or post anything online. And reading the text is beneficial to fill in any gaps in information. But overall, I really loved his class!
Oh dear gosh, I honestly shouldn't have taken this course. It was dreadful. Basically, If you like Economics take this course and actually take the class inside a classroom, not online. Online it justs gets confusing and you don't want to watch three hours of lectures a week in a row. Its so terrible. Overall he was an interesting man.
Don't need to attend class at all, all the content he covers is exactly from the textbook (he cowrote the textbook), try to keep up with the readings though because cramming multiple chapters of econ the night before the midterm/exam is a pain
Give very good lectures, but doesn't use or post notes when he gives them. The whole course is based on the textbook, so if you read it closely attendance isn't really mandatory. You'll get more out of the lectures if you read the chapter beforehand. Talks about apples and bananas too much. Easy midterm.
Provides good examples. Had fun learning Economics and it was also my first time peaking into the field. Was very clear.
This prof makes even the most abstract concepts seems obvious. I've never had an economics professor who could explain things so well. An exceptional prof. He really seems to love teaching. You'd be lucky to be in his class!
Enthusiastic, interesting, and engaged. Yes, he overuses the "apples and oranges" example, but it's an easy form to understand abstract concepts. Rewarding marker, so if you put in the effort to attend classes and review the material consistently, you will do well. Also: he has a blog. It's incredibly endearing.
I had him in my first year (finishin second as I write this.) He's a good prof, usually entertaining, and he wrote the text book. If you read the book, you never have to go to class. If you don't read it, you'll fail. Overall, I wish I did better, but he's a good prof.
Almost lost my scholarship because of this class, don't get me wrong, he's funny as hell, but he rants so much and doesn't make any slides, notes, or handouts so you have to have superhuman note-taking skills. I went to class for first sem, got a B-, stopped going to class for 2nd sem and read the textbook, finished the class with a B+. Nuff said.
Read the textbook. his class is such a waste of time without reading his textbook.
Great Prof, easy going and has a great sense of humor. Make sure to read the textbook at times to understand material. But his notes are generally concise and very helpful. This guy is crazy in a good way.
He's a fun prof. Hated how he didn't have any slides just comes and speaks in class. I stopped going to his classes and just studied from the textbook.
save your grade, gpa, scholarships, ... drop as soon as you have chance to :)
His lectures are not helpful.
read the textbook.
funny, but not helpful.
After completing first semester of 1000 I wish I had any other prof but him. He isn't very good at explaining things and if you are not very good at economics to start, you certainly won't do very good. The exam wasn't too bad but still pretty difficult. Also, he wrote the old textbook, the current textbook doesn't overlap much with his lectures.
didn't learned a single thing from his lectures, just read the book.
In lectures, he gives a really long, elaborate example to clarify the textbook concepts. His examples definitely help, but read the textbook if you want to pass! Lectures are long, I ended up live streaming from bed halfway through the semester.
Doesn't reply to emails. He doesn't use CuLearn either. Very confusing teaching method. He gets mad easily.
Skip class and read the book.
You might understand a bit of what he says in class, but that doesn't mean you can pass any of his tests.
He can't teach simple concepts
Started off easy, played games on my phone during lecture and didn't read textbook, did poorly on the first test. Next semester, read the textbook and followed along in class, did really well. Put in the effort and you will do well, but it's not a bird course.
Boring lectures with confusing examples. Doesn't post slides so the textbook is a necessity. Exam's are fairly hard.
One of the true gems of the CU economics staff, lectures are interesting and you get a nice collection of stories and examples to relate the material to real life. Very knowledgeable of economics, and prepares students well for upper year classes. 'Apples and Bananas' will become your go to example. If you take econ1000, take it with Rowe.
Professor Rowe is a great prof. Never read the textbook only listened to his lectures which are really well broken down with simple examples. He's hilarious and is fun to listen to, great prof for 1st year econ I would really recommend him to everyone!
I took Econ in high school and thought I understood it. Came to this class and realized i knew nothing and all semester it has been a struggle to pass. It's so difficult to take notes in his class because he uses no powerpoint and just draws the same little graph on a piece of paper everyday.
Out of all the first year ECON professors, you are going to want Nick Rowe. IF you listen in class and write down what you hear, the midterms are one study night away from passing. He explains things very well and answers any questions, and he is even more helpful in office hours. The lectures are also a lot of fun because he such a character.
very confusing! what you see on tests will drive you nuts
The worst prof ever. He doesn't explain anything properly, says too much unnecessary things and never gets to the point. Exams and midterms are tough.
The course was quite tough and you have to put in a lot of work if you would like to succeed. He does not post slides but is very knowledgeable and explains concepts well. It is very important to go to the lectures and you MUST study hard for the midterms and exams!
I'm a Psyc student, I suck at math. I took ECON 1000 & 1001 with Rowe 3 years ago. Looked him up here to see how he's rated. Maybe he's changed since then, but I doubt it. For someone who sucks at math and numbers, he was clear and concise; with going to every lecture and diligent reading of the textbook I got an A-. Would definitely recommend!
He tries to make concepts simple, but ugh! it doesn't help!
You have to use to study guide in order to well. The midterms are MC but only way you can practice them is from the study guide. The final exam has long and short answer, the study guide really helps in giving you ideas about the questions.
He tries to make economics the reason that everything happened. A little old fashioned.
Decent guy, but tends to over-employ unnecessary examples to illustrate very basic concepts and it mixes you up sometimes. No powerpoints either.
This is supposed to be an intro class which means you're not supposed to have any background in the subject prior to taking it. He explains things like you're supposed to know what he's talking about and draws lots of graphs with no labels and little explanation. Loosely follows the textbook so it's hard to teach yourself. Worst prof I've had.
If you miss a class, good luck catching up. Teaches a bit different from the textbook therefore it is SUPER important to go to class. Makes stuff relatively confusing and the course itself is a hit or miss; you either get it or you don't. Very passionate about Econ though and will not put extremely complicated calculations on the exam or midterm.
He is a really good professor, with amazing lecture.
Evaluation comes from textbook material, meaning lecture attendance isn't mandatory (although it helps). Terrific lecturer, can tell he's been doing this for a while. Made an 8:30 class worth attending. Assignments/tests/exams are fair, no tricks. If you study, you will do well.
One of my favourite first year profs. His lectures are interesting and hilarious at times. Easy to follow. Carleton is lucky to have him. He lacks political correctness in some ways - a fantastic quality for a professor. Take his section!
Compared to what I heard about some of the other ECON 1000 profs, Nick's class was difficult but doable. Sometimes he tends to go on some rants (somewhat class related), but his diagrams drawn in class are SUPER helpful if you write down what they're about. Otherwise read the textbook he assigns it's a LIFESAVER!! No communication with TA's.
Professor Rowe is the one you want for ECON 1000. Clear with his expectations, a VERY effective presenter/lecturer, and funny. His presentation style is not terribly math-heavy, which is good for an introductory course. Very much want to have him as a prof again.
good lectures, funny sometimes. makes you like economics.
Lectures were great however there were no slides so attending the lectures is necessary unless you want to try and teach yourself the course content. I highly recommend taking courses with this professor if you can.
Watched most of the course online, which turned out to be alright. Found this professor slightly rude towards students. I personally wouldn't recommend him as a professor for first year students.
He has been teaching for a very long time. So if he has little patience for BS, deal with it. He really wants you to understand the basics so that you can be literate in Econ.
Very entertaining and informative. Teaches much more difficult concepts than other profs so you are prepared for the final. Definitely would take his classes again
Honestly, never went to class. It streams online, watched it in my bed (even screen recorded when necessary). Great prof, the only thing is that he does not like using technology so be ready to take notes as there would be no slides. Text book will also be your best friend.
He is not usually very understanding and can be extremely rude. His class isn't that tough if you're decent with math but if you don't study, don't expect to pass.
