He gives a lot of work, so if you don't like to do a lot of work, don't take the class. If you do most of the work he gives out, it's an easy A even if you fail the exams. There's a ton of extra credit too.

Nicky is a great teacher with great insight and very well informed about the topic of politics. A bad grade is due to a lack of effort. If you read, do your summaries and give good insight you are guaranteed, not an A but an A+. The student who called him a communist obviously does not know what communism is. Good Teacher, easy to comprehend, and you learn alot about the stuff going on around you. His homework is easy because you can pick and choose what you want to do, and some of his activities are fun like his Rich vs Poor exercise. great class passionate and well structured

A) He isn't a Communist; look it up! B) He IS very biased, however, he's upfront about it (believing objectivity is impossible in this subject) and constantly notes that "x" is "his opinion". C) He graded a bunch of my work, yes, himself. D) There is a lot of reading. But he gives many opportunities to gain points, it's VERY possible to get an A.

There is a lot of reading but only because he believes that we are capable of doing the work. Why are you going to school, if not to open your mind & challenge yourself? Professor Yuen is invaluable.

Nicky really loves teaching politics and he will gets his students to love the subject as well. The class is fun but the grading is difficult to understand. Every week you have options to do an assignment, i suggest you do it all even if he says you don't have to. It'll lessen your problems when you add up the points total of your grade.

Teacher is funny, enthusiastic and nice. I slacked off and didn't pass but i learned a lot and i am pretty interested in politics. Attendance is worth 192 points at the end of the quarter if u don't skip a single day. This class is amazing. A Lot to do, but its up to you to choose how much you want to achieve. The TA's in this class are extraordinarily helpful and fun. Throughout the class you have a chance to earn up to 1500 total points, and you ONLY need 900 points out of that to get an A!!! You will definitely earn your keep in this class; this is the most work I have ever done in any class - by far. What you do DURING class time is an easy and helpful learning experience. This is an easy class to get an A in if you plan ahead. Most classes don't have multiple ways for you to get an A depending on whether you prefer to read, take tests or do hands on activities. The most entertaining professor I've had in years! He makes class interesting, and uses various teaching methods to help you understand. The work load is a lot, but there are plenty of extra credit opportunities, along with helpful student mentors.

Class was very engaging and thought provoking. There are so many different ways to get the points to get an A. You get points for coming to class, and the student mentors are very helpful. He wants you to pass, you just have to do work. And readings, you have to make sure you spend time doing those readings.

Nicky is a motivating, exciting professor that really brought the focus of discussion to what part I play in the world around me. Lots of notes, lots of homework, several papers that made me really think. The out-of-class participation points came from being involved in my community. This class was a great experience.

It is more work than I thought it was going to be for an intro class but this is what I came to college for, to use my brain.

Dr Yuen's class is hands down the best class I've ever taken. The workload is immense until you realize that you do not have to do all of it to get an A. He expects a lot because he believes each of his students are capable and want a real education. What a real college level class should be like.

This is a college course. 2 hours of homework (outside of class) per quarter unit is a general guideline for most courses. That means that a 4 unit class requires 8 hours of work outside of the classroom. That is more than enough time to complete enough work to get an A in this class. It really boils down to your commitment to school.

Nicky's an incredible professor. His class does require work however, he provides many different opportunities in order to obtain the points you need for an A. If you are able to do one major assignment per week, you will do well. Nicky is very passionate & cares about his students. His class is interesting & he is a great leader & a wonderful guy.

There are a lot of ways to get a good grade in this class: if you learn by reading, writing, or doing. Nicky has a passion about what he does that is infectious (and that's a good thing!). He really makes you care about what you're learning and doing. In addition, there is a large team of TA's that help out, so there is always help available.

This is great class. It is a college level class and on par with anything taught at a university. The most important thing is to do the work. You won't make it if you do not do the work. The Teaching Assistants are very knowledgeable and helpful. I recommend it to everyone.

You will do lots and lots of work for this class but you will definitely learn. In my opinion the weekly readings are the worst part. There is a certain amount of points you need to get an A in this class and there are so many ways to get them that an A isn't unattainable. BUT this class is alot of work and requires LOTS of your time.

If you want an easy A for this class, then don't take it. I mean, you can easily get an A or A+ but it will require you to do a heavy load of work. I personally did not think it was too overwhelming like others but I would agree that you need to manage your time and put a lot of effort. Otherwise, Nicky is pretty chill and cool!

Loved the class. A LOT of reading... but most of it is pretty interesting. You will work for your grade, but it's not hard to do well if you put in the time. if you're ready to ready 15 long articles, take extremely hard quizzes and do 12 hours of community service the go for it.

No teacher gives more work than Nicky, plus he is a very very tough grader. So for you all out there trying to take this class, please reconsider it hundred times before registering the course.

His class requires a lot of time. Every week you have a ton of readings and a test to go with them. You will need to have time to volunteer for two projects. It was VERY fast paced, with a lot of reading every week. I spent 3 hours everyday for 6 weeks total. But, there's SO MUCH extra credit, esp towards the end. Plus, Nicky is VERY willing to give extensions whenever someone needs it. Almost the entire class passed, majority got As and Bs. As long as you stay consistent, trust me... YOU WILL PASS!!!

Similar to the comment below, I took the summer online class, so naturally it's very fast paced (6 weeks total). There's a lot of reading every week and the online quizzes are pretty hard. You also have to be politically active and "talk to people" in public. But, Nicky gives loads of extra credit. He's also very understanding and a fast responder.

Nicky is a wonderful professor, and extremely accessible, especially considering I took the online summer class. I was overwhelmed at first by the diff. platforms this class is on (Catalyst, his own website, FB) but it's easy once you get used to it. You will read A TON, but if you do the work you will almost certainly get an A. Tons of ExtraCredit

I truly felt like I was taking an actual university level class when I had him. He will challenge your ideas, open up your mind to new ways of thinking, and make you feel like you're truly supported. The workload is what is really expected from a college student, so be aware of that. Highly recommended.

I walked in expecting to be bored out of my mind by a mandatory politics class, but his class was amazing! There's work, sure. But, it's so worth it. OMG! This was the hardest class i have ever taken! EVER! Its definitely a UC level class. Its very hard for introductory class. Make sure you are in class because if your not you lose participation points and miss what is going on for that week. GO TO HELP SESSIONS they are extra credit. AMAZING. I literally enjoyed, doing the homework because I was learning so much about our government, politics, and issues we can no longer just ignore. Nicky is unlike other professors and truly CARES for his students and makes time for you. He is a professor that is intelligent, and wants that A for you just as much, if not more than you want it.

It was a normal class teach by an outstanding and caring professor. This class made me aware that we have an actual problem we need not only our attention but also to fix as soon as possible. Although the class is challenging but he made it easier

One of the best classes that I've had the opportunity to take at De Anza. Nicky is very engaging but also very compassionate. Yes there is alot of work, but the TA's and Nicky himself were incredibly helpful and insightful. I'd recommend this class to anyone who wants an eye opening experience into the world of politics.

Nicky is an amazing professor. His class is very interactive. The class is not hard, but it takes a lot of work. You will be expected to read and have weekly assignments. If you do the work, you will learn a lot, guaranteed and you might come out of the class a better citizen in the community. You will never have another class so very connected.

Anyone that complained his class is hard because of the work, does not belong in his class. Personally, it is the most rewarding and most inspirational class I've ever taken. The things you learn can be applied to your life outside because he teaches about the current political news going on. instead of things out of the textbook. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Nicky is the greatest teacher that every single De Anza college student should seriously consider to take his classes. I was taking his class online last quarter and let me tell you, this Berkeley Law graduate professor is very very helpful! There will be a lot of readings and volunteer works but it's all going to help you in the long run.

this is the first comment of mine on this website but Nicky is a very nice professor. I was like you guys at first of the quarter but at the end, I realized that he was such a helpful teacher and he is very dedicated with his students. Overall, in my opinion, he's the best teacher at De Anza and I would recommend him with all of my friends.

Nicky is one of the most inspirational teachers I've had in a long time. He teaches you so much about the political world and I honestly did not care about politics before his class! The class content was really interesting and relates to current happenings in the political world. Gives lots of opportunities and extra credit! Major plus!

This is a College level class with a college work load meaning that you will have readings and work due so get ready to put the package for your grade as responsible student should. what strikes me the most is that guy was one the most inspirational and caring teacher i ever had in any learning setting and i promise that you will get a lot fun.

I took Nicky's Poli 1 class and it was a really eye opening experience. it helped shed light on a lot of the political issues that are going on in society, while showing me how to share my ideas and look for more answers to the many questions that politics can bring up. Nicky's Online 6-Week Summer Class: Condensing a quarter into 6 weeks a lot of reading, however the material was great, useful and not bland. I learned a ton from his class. Read the articles, do all the extra credit he offers (there's a lot), and get involved. Tons of help from him and TA's, super responsive to questions. Would take class again

I had no knowledge and could care less about politics. But Nicky had me rethink everything! Do the readings! Tests were difficult online. Need to do 12 hours of community hours of his choice. This is a college course, but he wants you to pass! He will work with you! One of the BEST teachers I have ever had!

I've taken plenty of online classes that I didn't require much work or thought really. Nicky's class definitely requires some hard work and attention but it is soooo worth while. The class honestly changed my life and the readings are relevant to real life. I was never into politics before this class but now I research EVERYTHING! Take the class!!!

When I chose this professor I didn't know what I was getting into except I knew based on the comments that he wouldn't give up on me and thats what I needed. When I first enrolled in Nicky's class I was expecting some guy lecturing my ears off. What I got was a caring teacher who genuinely wanted people to take part in their community because we as students are the future of America. Some people were upset about the community service, but it was an eye opening experience. I loved the class and Prof.

Nicky was a great professor and I think the fact that the #1 complaint was the amount of effort needed says something about the negative reviews. Yes the class is difficult, but that's because not all college classes are easy. If you don't have the time that's fine, but don't demonize a great instructor because he wants you to engage in your work.

Nicky let's it be known from day 1 that the work load is intimidating but tells his students to remember that they are smart; not many professors are as supportive as he is! If you're not passionate or ambitious this class is not for you! He offers many ec opportunities, in order to fail you have to have literally fell off the face of the planet.

Nicky's class really pushed me to step out into my comfort zone and I will forever be grateful for that. His class does involve a significant amount of work, however the field work you do is rewarding and the readings are extremely applicable. Overall, Nicky is a truly motivating/understanding professor and it is worth taking his class.

Loved this class!! There are weekly readings, but they're more than manageable if you spread them throughout your week. Also, the field work is solely responsible for some of the best experiences and friendships in my college career. You get to work with passionate people on REALLY important issues in the community. Take him! You won't regret it!

Great teacher, passionate, knows what he is talking about. There was way too much work in my opinion and spent the majority of time on this class. However, the class is easy if you keep up with the work and there are multiple extra credit opportunities.

I had to take the class online because of reasons but I went to some lectures for extra cred and he's a PHENOMENAL lecturer. The class is well organized and if you're online, a lot of the stuff you have to do is reading and watching assigned material, but he always keeps them interesting .

Mr. Yuen is a great teacher and is passionate about teaching. The online class consists of reading articles, quizzes, and three assignments. It seems like a lot but as long as you keep up with the reading you will do fine on the quizzes. There is a lot of extra credit options. Overall a great class. I learned a lot and enjoyed every part of it.

Lots of readings every week and weekly chats with another partner are due every Friday reflecting the course material. Weekly online quizzes as well based off of the articles, with only three attempts. Must also engage in community service and reflect on it in comparison with the articles as your midterm and final. Requires a lot of time/dedication

This was one of the most challenging class but I learned a lot and grew up a lot. There are TAs who mentor us to get success. You can even receive extra credits for attending their help session each week. I took an online course, but there are so many opportunities to interact with other students and help each other.

This class is awesome! I highly recommend taking it on campus, so you really get to learn the material. Nicky really cares about his students and his passionate for politics is very contagious. His class made my experience at DeAnza a lot more meaningful. There are lots of extra credit opportunities and he has pretty cool TAs in his classes.

Professor NGY has been an influential mentor who seeks the best out of ALL his students. In fact, he sincerely cares about our potential to be successful that he offers plenty of extra credit opportunities for a chance to get an A. The learning curve isn't as steep as many think, the idea is to prioritize and schedule when to study for his class.

Leave it to Nicky to be able to communicate with each and every student when needed and care passionately about not only their success, but well being. He gives so much extra credit and actually believes that everyone is intelligent. Thankful that this class opened my eyes to the power of voting, civic engagement, and voice. Thanks Nicky :)

If your desire for an A is a reflection of easy classes and minimal assignments, youre more than likely not going to understand our society and how we influence a variety of issues. NGY really reflects on interesting topics that are a foundation of our society, so by taking this class and being engaged in what it has to offer, you will succeed.

Nicky is a wonderful professor who puts his heart into his teaching. Every lecture grants a new perspective. He really wants his students to understand & excel, just be sure to put in genuine effort and you'll succeed in his course. i took poli01 almost a year ago to get credit for high school and boi it was the hardest class i've ever taken i ended up dropping it like 2 weeks before the final. even though there are a lot of assigned readings and civic engagement hours required, prof yuen undoubtedly wants his students to succeed and truly gain something from his class.

Nickey is hands down one of the best professors in the campus. He cares a lot for his students and wants the best for them. He gives a lot of extra credits and opportunities and I have learned a lot from him. He is aware of the student's needs and encourages them (us students) to do better in our class! :)

Professor Yuen's class was very engaging as we learned a lot. Even though there might be a lot of work. All of it is manageable and he grades more on completion rather than content. I would recommend him.

Professor Gonzales Yuen is one of the best professors I've had at De Anza. His POLI 1 class was super fun and informative. At the beginning, his class might seem very intimidating as he wants you to expect a lot of work. However, it is not impossible and I didn't stress out compared to when I took POLI 1 with other professors. Sign up for his class

I took the online class over the fall. It was very easy for me because I worked smart and not hard. The most time consuming assignments are the readings but you do not have to do those. The main point of the reading is so you can do well on the weekly quizzes but if you use control F and copy/paste during the quiz, you will get an A on them.

I had very different political views from yuen but he was very respectful of them and did not take out our differing views on my grade. You do not have to do the time consuming readings. Answers are online and control F will save you. Do the extra credit!!! He gives out a lot. And be prepared to read lots of left leaning articles.

Prof. Yuen is an excellent teacher, very passionate about teaching. Very interactive class, made me like political science. De Anza college has a very good political science department.

Professor Yuen is very inspirational. At the time I took the class 2 years ago, I had some problems with the class because my political and social views were very different. Now I've realized the true value of the class. There will be a lot of reading but if you work hard, an A is almost guaranteed.

He is really nice professor, I took the online course and it was a lot of work but also really fun. Two of the main projects you do are community service and registering people to vote. 12hrs of CS and 10ppl to vote. There are also a lot of readings and quizzes each week. If you dont do well then he offers a lot of extra credit.

Definitely an easy A if you do the work and follow directions. Its not difficult at all you just need to spend a decent amount of time for projects. Quizzes are fairly easy also.

Know what you are signing up for before you take this course. Nicky makes the amount of work involved very clear, but most students underestimate that. 2 hours of work per unit outside of class time is the standard for all classes. This class will get you out of your comfort zone and talking to people. Complete the work, and youll pass easy A+

Let me tell you, I took this prof my very first semester, he prepared me to take on what a real uni class requieres from you. Nicky was a great instructor. Yes, you have to dedicate time outside of class for his online course, but he works with you often and helps you to succeed in the course. I went to his office hours often, and he gives plenty of extra credit to ensure you get the grade you want. You do have to do a lot of work, but he works with you if you need help!

Do not take this class unless you are prepared to work. The class is extremely reading-heavy and there are several projects you have to complete, including 12 hours of community service. 0/10 would recommend taking this during the summer. Although it was a lot of work, Nicky is a good guy and I learned a ton.

Solid teacher and you'll definitely learn something, but TONS of extra HW/misc assignments that are worth at lot of credit. 20 articles, 2 textbook chapters (he posts a pdf), and 5 videos per week. Quizzes are fine, just command-F through the readings. Super supportive and wants you to succeed though, and generous w/extra credit.

Anyone who tells you not to take this class is just lazy. There is a lot of assigned reading and video content, but if you force yourself to remain in a learning mindset, you'll start to enjoy it. I am currently enrolled in the class and the reviews make it seem much worse than it is. This isn't an easy class, but you learn so much.

Initially, I thought I would drop. The assignments looked daunting -- group work, papers, quizzes, community service, etc. However, let me tell you that I'm glad I stuck through. Nicky knows what he's doing and is a remarkable professor and intellectual. He wants to improve our democracy, he cares about community and wants to instill that in YOU.

Take Poli1 with Professor Yuen if you want a professor who actually cares about his students and providing a meaningful experience. You will have to read in this class and participate with hands on assignments. BUT extra credit offered every single week, so it's still easy to get an A. He will work with you to help you pass, if you reach out to him

If you want to be inspired to make life better for your community, this is your professor. Yes, there's a fair amount of homework. But you will engage in dynamic conversations in class, learning from seasoned organizers, activists, & politicians who will visit your class each week. You will come out of this experience changed for the better.

Lots of extra credit opportunities. Help sessions with TAs created a sense of community that other asynchronous classes don't really have. This class has a larger time commitment when compared to other De Anza classes, but if you stick with it and put in the effort, it's relatively easy to get an A.

Important tip: make sure you have the time to commit to this course because certain assignments aren't 100% self-paced/async. Outside of that, this is a really eye-opening class for those who care about politics. Lots of extra credit and many approachable TAs to help you through the class with emails and help sessions, which is unique and nice!

Super inspiring class! You will learn how you affect politics and how politics affects our real world. Take it if you're curious about activism. Avoid if you prefer focusing on how a bill becomes a law. Writing assignments are light. Lots of extra credit. You will struggle in this class if you do not manage your weekly calendar.

This class overs the basics of our political system, problems that plague democracy and solutions for a more just world. Workload is similar to any other 8 credit hour class, and the Prof and team of TAs are always available for help. Extra cred is plentiful in this class! Nicky was an amazing professor that created a curriculum that was rewarding with articles ranging from articles to contemporary videos that presented an accessible approach to polisci. It created a safe space that explored the role of the citizen in the systems of government that ranged from local politics to the D.C. insiders and outliers.

There is a lot of reading and small assignments week to week so no singular assignment can tank your grade. The TAs are really helpful and there are extra credit opportunities. I think that some of the curriculum can cover difficult content but just do the work and you'll be fine.

Wonderful experience in American Government & Politics. The Civic Engagement aspect of the course is challenging, but it's hands-on learning of the materials we study. The group discussions were quite lively, too. Would definitely take more classes with this professor.

Nicky is an extremely fair professor who gives ample opportunities for people to excel and shine. If you're not good at one thing, you have other ways to show off where you do excel--and both means become growth opportunities. He wants his students to reach their full potential, and he offers a lot of support for students to do exactly that.

Took this class and one of the most clear-cut classes I've ever taken. Expectations are expressed in your first meeting with the T.A. assigned to you at the beginning of the quarter. So many opportunities for extra credit. Proff Nicky is also really understanding when life happens as long as you speak up and voice your concerns.

While I will admit the amount of assigned material is absurd, a majority of the material is very interesting. There are a lot of hands-on assignments including registering people to vote and Civic engagement but I enjoyed them. His TAs are amazing!

If you are looking for a standard low-engagement class where you can passively show up, then this is not the class for you, and thats OK! If you want to expand your thinking and alter your personal trajectory, then his class is worth it

Professor Nicky cares about humanity, he is hot chocolate on a rainy day. The most dedicated Professor I have met. It has been an honor to be able to take his class. His teaching style is powerful and life changing. Every assignment has the ability to chisel you and transform you. If you want to be woke take his class, if you woke take his class.

at first I thought what the professor was trying to have us do was ridiculous. But, the professor does accept it late with very little points taken off. Help sessions are available which you get extra credit for attending are a must because it will make up for bad results on the quizzes. Honestly if you just do the work and email him. 5/5

Honestly it was a pretty good class, a ton of extra credit, but you definitely have to put in the work to do well. A lot more work than I would like from a GE class, but I would say he's a fair grader and sympathizes with his students a lot. Would probably take again.

INSANE amount of classwork/homework. This was an online class. HOURS of reading AND hours of videos AND multiple group projects but surprisingly enough easy work, just busy work. Loads of extra credit to help bump your grade. Nicky and all the TAs were more than welcoming and helpful. Participation is key!
