unclear, gives tests with study guides that DO NOT comply. does not listen to crtiticism, does not delve into the art of film, dry, boring, bad sense of humor. rediculous amount of work.
At first i thought this was way too hard and it is a little but he is a really good teacher. One day he lectures very clearly and uses good examples and the other day we watch a movie and write a page applying what we read and what he said to the movie. He is nice and understanding he really gets you into film just cuz hes so excited
He is really cool and really passionate about film. He is clear and involves the class with discussions. Uses powerpoints so its easy to take notes and puts everything on his website. Easy to talk to for help, overall a great teacher!
Very resourceful, fair and energized. A great professor!
An energetic teacher very passionate about film. Notes are easy to follow and tests are fairly easy if you study. The class is sometimes dull, but other than that he has the ability to captivate your interest in film. Knows what he's talking about, just do the work.
This guy is chill but he gives the hardest test in the world.. the hw is easy but the test are still what kills the class... overall BUSTTTYYY
Like this teacher! It was really intresting class and I really got to know a lot about films. The first test was hard but he changed the test so they where more writing what you know rather then the scan trons. Take this class! you will learn so much.
This professor is really good. He really knows what he is talking about. He is very into his subject. He make the class very interesting. He give a lot of notes, and homework so that you can keep up with what is going on in class. He presents the material clearly easy to understand.
was very easy and interesting. He is very interesting and pretty easy if you go to class and pay attention
Great teacher, i didn't even realize i had him his first semester here. I never read, and just payed attention in class. We took lecture notes one day, and watched movies on the other. Some times the movies were a tad long but overall i loved his class, put almost no effort into it and i got an A because he made it so interesting.
I love this guy! He makes a film class what it should be, easy and fun. I really enjoyed taking both his classes! The best online class I could possibly take and learned a lot!
Passionate, handsome, knowledgable, somewhat demanding, crystal clear, and very helpful. Good guy and wonderful professor. Made me want to study FS and can get good grade with a lil effort. Go to class and pay attention,.
really interesting and fun. showed good movies.
I took this online and actually really enjoyed it, much to my surprise. It was a simple class, watch the movie (don't BS it!) then write a short page about it in a week. You learn a lot and the teacher gives really helpful feedback! I would take him again.
Good teacher overall. Fun to learn and not so hard. Very understanding.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. He is very knowledgeable about what he teaches and is an overall great teacher. One midterm, one paper, and one test, which isn't even that bad. Go to class, engage in class discussions and you will get so much out of him. HIGHLY recommend.
Very fun teacher knows his film!!
Very intelligent and caring teacher. Knows a ton about film and can give movie recommendations to students interested in different film genres. Very good teacher.
great film class, i had no interest in film until i took his class, text goes along well with what he asks you to learn and reasearch paper was not too even though it was 8-10 he grades it very fairly, super fun class good teacher
Best class I have ever taken. A lot of fun to watch contemporary films and learn about what brought Hollywood to its current status. Totally fair and maybe even to easy at times with grading. Research paper was 2 days late and 300 words short, but still got 94%. Don't really need to know film terms going in.
I took a couple of his classes online and he's super easy, you get credit for analyzing some of your favorite films. He gets back to you ASAP and offers a lot of extra credit. You always know where you stand in that class. Def take it for an easy A!
Such a good teacher! I took the online course and its really fun and easy. Really easy A and he is extremely fast at replying to emails. Very helpful and interested in the students questions or comments. Always replies to each homework with comments, you can tell he loves what he does. Two exams, weekly homework assignments (really easy)
I took his 101 and 107 class online and aced both of them. I actually learned a lot, and it is super fun. TAKE HIM if you can. very nice guy and very efficient. :)
Great class, you will learn a lot about film you never knew. You get to watch and analyze great films. You have weekly assignments and a longish paper do, as well as some exams. If you do the work you will do fine.
I can't speak for Nico in an on-campus class, but the online film studies class is less then phenomenal. The homework we turn in each week is responded to by pre-written emails. Does not respond quickly to emails, and will not give any extensions even with good reasons. We are asked to explain things that are not clearly defined in the book or site
triweekly film responses and three 5 pg papers. I think he may aspire to be an english professor at ucsb considering his extensive guidelines for film analysis papers.Don't take unless you have experience in upper division english writing classes.
Even though he makes some mistakes, he's got his heart in the right place.
He is super easy. I had him last semester so I'm taking him again this semester. I took this class online and I barely had to read the book. He'll give you 10/10 on your weekly units just for getting it done. Make sure to do all of them and your mid-terms and final and you'll for sure get an A
Easy but interesting online class. Nico is well organized and responds to email quickly and is very friendly. You get to watch many awesome films and get credit as long as you turn in the work every week. One 7 page paper is graded fairly and two exams that are pretty easy. Just do the work and you'll get an A. I enjoyed this class.
Super easy grader, and the subjects are all interesting, which makes the class even better. I've had him for 3 classes - 104, 107, and 121. I've gotten As in each class. Do the weekly assignments and write the paper and you will do well. Very easy grader.
WOW! Before having taken this class I had no idea I would enjoy it so much. Recommend this (online) class to EVERYONE. Text book is NOT needed. I barely picked it up. Units are crystal clear, the expectations are clear. Do units, midterm, paper, and final and will pass with an A. I LOVE NICO!!!! PLEASE take this class :D
Professor Maestu is a great guy. I took his 107 class online and couldn't be happier that I did. He's a fair grader and I was able to learn and watch so many classics. I highly recommend this course. It's definitely an easy A!
Pretty easy online course. 500 word responses every week on a film you watched. One of the questions is always "What was your response to this film?" and then the rest of them are on course material, but if you look at the power points you will get the jist. He grades quickly and responds to emails quickly. 2 tough midterms and a 1 paper
This class is so easy. Every week you watch a movie & answer questions about it. It's so easy to BS your way through the answers as long as you use solid writing. I read the book, but not every word. Hell, I didn't even watch the entire movie sometimes. The research paper is very simple. Check out the samples he has & you'll know exactly what do to.
This teacher is a great gut. I took the film festival course with Nico! He really wants you to take interest and participate, and has a so easy way of explaning things, even the dumbest students couldnt missunderstand him. If you do your work you will get an A, even if you suck. Great guy and good teacher.
Wow Easy A His assignment are very clear. 500 word response every week usually 4 questions so easy to BS the answers. I sometimes didnt even fininsh the assignment and still got a 9 out of 10. Easy grader 2 tests 1 paper. 20 point extra credit assignment toward the end. No book required. I finished with a 105 and only put in 50 of the effort.
Nicolas Maestu is an excellent Professor. Have taken 2 classes with him and plan to take more. Earned an "A" both times. The classes are interesting and informative. His layout is clear and concise. You know exactly what is expected of you well in advance. The routine does not vary from week to week. Answers emails and grades immediately.
This was Film Festival Studies with no pre-req, so felt there would be guidance as to which of the 200 entries would be more important to see. No help other that recommendation to see a couple films where we would have guest speakers, and a couple of in-class offerings. Expected students to already know film studies terminology and write it well.
Nico was my first professor at SBCC and was wonderful. It was an easy A and he is super helpful. I never didn't understand anything.
I took this class online and it was beyond easy. I never got anything below 100% on any assignment except once and that was because I was being very lazy. If you need this class to fulfill a requirement and want an easy A, this is it. Take the class. He is a cool guy too.
Nico is a wonderful professor. He is very helpful in his online course, and I have heard that he is just as wonderful in person. If you take his online course, expect to write at least 500 words per week in a response to a film (easy!) and there is 1 big essay (7-9 pages, but fairly easy, I received 90100 on this) This class is an easy A.
Nico is one of my favorite professors. I have taken many of his classes. He is really helpful and you can ask him questions about things and he really helps you. He also answers his emails really fast and the class is fairly easy if you pay attention.
Took for online summer. He expects WAY TOO much for a online film class. He uses moodle, and his own web page to give info. Instead of having two pages it would make it easier/more organized to just have everything on one page. He is a strict about how you format emails to him and will make u resend them. Would NOT suggest taking him online!
Took this class online. Honestly the easiest online class I have ever taken. Do the work and that it. Easy grader. Don't understand how people complain about his clear cut directions on how to e-mail him. You literally just put your name, course code, and what it is (unit, question, essay, final, etc) in the subject line. Not that hard.
Super easy class and very interesting movies. There are a lot of extra credit offered as well.
Nico seemed to really care! He gave great feed back about each Unit write up. Each had to be 500 words (15 total units: 1 unit was ec, 1 was the midterm and 1 was the final) The midterm and final are free response questions, but if you use your book and class pp notes youre solid. there is one 7-9 paged paper, but itll easy. Seemed to be busy work
Although I never met him in person, he was an excellent teacher who was willing to work with me during a few difficult moments of the semester. He was willing to accept late work for a fair loss of points, and was very good about responding to emails in a timely manner. Great teacher who provided a lot of good feedback.
Nicolas is a very nice professor. Class is very straight forward. Look at the Syllabus and it will tell you everything you need to know. Very organized. No surprises. Always receive good feedback. Expect 1 assignment per week, 1 mid term test online, a research paper and a 5 question final.
I've had the pleasure of taking 4 different classes with Prof. Nico. Compared to other professors he is the most organized and accessible to answering questions. He offers excellent feedback and you learn while enjoying great films. His classes inspired me to pursue Film Studies, as my Major. Attend, watch the films and do the work for a good grade.
Professor Maestu is probably the best teacher I've had in my three years in college. He's really supporting if you need help and he's an excellent lecturer. Recommend!
Don't need the textbook for this class, I took it online and there are weekly films to watch that are pretty enjoyable and online slides to go over. Professor Maestu is always accessible through email and is quick to respond. One 7-9 page paper and final/midterm but pretty easy overall!
Easiest class at SBCC. Watch a movie and answer 5 questions every week and you will get an A. The paper is long, but really easy. He basically gives you 100% on everything if you follow directions and meet the work requirements. Super easy
Such an easy online class. Barely any work. Watch a movie a week and have short answer response. Do everything at your own pace. Prof gives great feedback and very helpful. I loved learning the film industry from this class.
If you have the opportunity to take Film Studies, I highly recommend taking it with this professor. He gives great feedback and if you do all the work you will for sure pass the class. Plus, its fun watching movies and writing about them.
Nico is a great professor, the best online class I've had. Actually responds to emails in a decent time-frame. Class is pretty easy as long as you do ALL the work. There are a few long papers, but this is college and expected.
I took film festival studies with Nico and it was a lot of fun. You watch a ton of movies and you stay in Hollywood for 5 days. You have to find your own transportation and housing though. You have to turn in 6 reviews at the end of the class and I turned mine in late and still got a B.
The class consisted of watching a movie or rarely 2 and answering questions. Most likely you'll get all of them correct. There was also a research paper which was super easy. He gives A TON of extra credit so it's easy to pass this class. This class is lecture heavy and about 2 hours long but it is a hybrid class so you only meet once a week.
Took online, was super easy. Watched a movie each week for hw and answered questions. One paper, one midterm and one final. I have about 30 points of extra credit and I did ok on the paper so it buffered my grade out. Nico is really sweet and gives a lot of feedback on each assignment. Easy and interesting class. didn't ever use the textbook
It would be great if we studied some female directors in this class. Like any...
Grades work promptly. Offers extra credit and accepts late work. Gives great feedback. You can tell he is really passionate about the subject. Do the work and you'll get an A.
Easy A class. As long as you do the work, you'll get 100%. Many extra credit opportunities. There is a midterm, a final, & a 7-9 paged paper but they're all super easy! Highly recommend to take this class if you can! You'll enjoy it!
He is a fair and super fast grader and basically as long as your turn in your work on time you get full credit. He is also flexible with late work. I liked that when I missed an assignment he'd reach out and remind me I could still turn it in for full credit. Would highly recommend for general ed requirements.
FS 101 Online. Watch a movie every week and answer questions about it, comment on one other student's reply. A fairly long and grueling midterm short answer questions, and long and grueling term paper, long and grueling final which is short answer form. Write logical and creative answers to all questions from HW to MT/Finals and you'll get A.
This professor is so amazing and caring. If you are having a hard time with literally ANYTHING you can email him and he will respond back quickly. For certain circumstances he allows you to go back and fix things that you did wrong which is great. He gives amazing feed back and does not give a lot of overwhelming homework. Only 1 assignm. a week.
hardest grader I have ever had. Me and my friend would submit the same paper and I would do the whole thing and my friend would get full credit and I would not. He grades super hard when your in the beginning of the alphabet, and then doesn't care when he gets to the people who's names start with S. Nothing that he said made sense and so confused.
Lots of extra credit!!! One major term paper 7-9 pages, but he prepares you well, giving you steps to complete throughout the course to make the paper easier. Super easy A. Definitely would take if you need credits filled.
I TOOK FILM V01. This is an intro to film class that I really enjoyed through Moorpark college, it was an online course. There are no reviews for his intro to film class so I thought I would add one. He is great and gives so much extra credit that at one point I had an 114%. Seriously such a good professor who is very clear! MUST TAKE!!
He is an amazing teacher. Gives extra credit. You watch a movie and write about it. The only hard essay was the final which was 7-9 pages. He hates plagiarism, he saves everyone's paper so don't even try it, he will call you out. Write every detail. Do really good on the first few assignments and he'll just start giving you A's on assignments.
I took Film Studies 101 over the summer with Professor Maestu and it was a really enjoyable class. Although there was a lot of writing and films to watch, who doesn't like watching movies for a class?! Even for the final paper (6 pages), I wrote about The Shining, and I honestly enjoyed writing it. Definitely, a class you should take some time!
Did the same thing every week but honestly worked for the material you learn. Go through the lecture and textbook, watch a movie, answer discussion questions, and reply to 1 person. Tons of extra credit opportunity, I got over 105% and didn't even do all the e.c. available. No reason not to take him but he is pretty hands-off. Still a great class.
Professor Maestu is good professor. He has all of his material organized, he responds fast to emails, and he has clear instructions and grading criteria. There is typically one discussion assignment a week and gives lots of options of movies to watch. The midterm and term paper take a long time and are pretty difficult.
Take it! Covid made it all online, but that didn't matter. Each week we got to choose a movie out of a list and then write about it. He grades assignments extremely quick. Will give full credit on assignments as long as you do the required word count. No tests. There is one paper, one mid-term & final. Plenty of time to do assignments.
I took professor Maestu during Covid in an online class and he is a good professor. The theory is interesting, there is opportunity for extra credit, and he is an easy grader. He is not necessarily one of the professors I learned the most from but of you want a 3 unit class that feels like a 1 unit class and you want an easy A, take him.
At first, I really didn't like this class. If you take it online as I did you have to do a lot of writing. I heard if you take it in person there is less but online it's definitely a writing heavy course. I really liked the professor he is very understanding and grades basically for completion everything I turned in on time I got 100% on.
Overall pretty easy class. Maestu is mostly hands off, you do it at your own pace and schedule. No mandatory lectures. The papers are a little lengthy, especially the final which is 7-9 double spaced pages, but he gives questions that you answer so you don't start from scratch. Pretty easy class, would recommend to anyone.
Great class, watch a movie each week and answer questions in the discussion post. Good movies, there's always a free one but better options if you wanna rent or Netflix etc. Midterm/Final were essay questions that you answer using the movies you watched. Powerpoints are important for Midterm/Final for definitions etc. Extra credit, I had a 106%!
I took FS 101 spring semester with Maestu and everything I could say is that you won't regret taking this course. Even thought there were three major papers that you have to put a lot of effort in order to get good grades he gives a lot of extra credit I would take other classes with Maestu without thinking twice. I really enjoyed this course.
This was one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. You watch a movie from a list of films answer some questions regarding the film. There are some lectures with information that can help on some of the questions. He is not a tough grader. Hardest part was the mid term, 7-9 page paper and final, but even that really isn't that bad. Take FS101.
Nico is great! The criteria for assignments is really clear and he grades assignments very quickly, always giving great feedback. It is an easy class as long as you participate and do the work.
So many pointless assignments, demanding answers to the same vague questions over and over again. Instead of going deep about the directors studied, we just watch films and read articles on our own, to the point where it seems like there is no reason to have a professor guiding the course.
Nico is a smart dude. However, I think his time is too heavily split between the gigantic amount of film studies classes he teaches. Assignments were very repetitive, and it seemed as if he didn't really care too much about what we did. He simply copy and pastes all of his feedback and criticism.
Professor Maestu is clear about what he wants from his students, and is an easy-going grader. I had no problem passing this course with no prior knowledge of film studies, and the only information I needed to pass with an A was reading through the slides every week, which takes about 3 minutes. Only downside is you need to watch a movie each week.
This was a pretty easy class if your good at writing. The only hard part is having to sit through some of the films if you didn't decide to take one from the list and just roll with the ones he provides. Other than that super easy class but kinda boring
This class was somewhat easy, just put in a little effort, and you'll be fine. You're teaching yourself, but that's all classes in college anyways. The replies feel automated, and the class size is pretty big. It's alright. You'll get the credit you need. Good luck! :)
Professor Maestu is a very easy grader, your assignments are somewhat time consuming but ultimately if you answer the questions you'll get an easy A. Only issue I have is that you are very unguided, with the only lecture material being a powerpoint presentation without narration. He does give some amazing feedback on assignments though.
I am not a fan of self-study such as an online class, but I could enjoy it. Other teachers often give a bunch a number of assignments with one deadline, but he gives one assignment due every couple of days, so I was able to learn in a systematic way. And most of all, I love him so much because he gives us careful feedback, advice, and good grades.
I really enjoyed this class! I took a late-start course, so we had to cram in 3 films a week; however, Mr. Maestu provided a list of about 15 film to choose from each assignment! The list of films was very diverse. Anything from 1940's films to Adam Sandler films. Great teacher.
He was a pretty easy grader but the amount of work did not makes sense to me, I have in the past taken a few 5 credit classes with way less work needed. Not trustworthy. I would not take again.
never read the textbook, weekly slides cover everything; assignments are the same every week and just involve watching movies really. term paper is a little time consuming but not hard. he answers quickly and its easy to understand grading criteria. super super easy and fun if you have an interest in film at all.
I loved this class, I took it online during summer and it introduced me to a lot of great movie I had never seen before. This class was a lot of work when it comes to slides and note taking but that is because I took the 8 week version. This professor is overall a very east grader and it was not hard to get an A in this class.
This class was a breeze! Professor Maestu gives helpful feedback and lots of extra credit. Just watch the films, answer questions, and you'll get an easy A. unstuckstudy was a great study tool for prepping the papers.
