lets you pick assignments and due dates. dont slack off or your mark will suffer
fun, interesting, stimulating class with quirky prof who expends enormous effort and preparation for her classes
An excellent prof in terms of her organization and her concern for each person in the class. She is very smart, and offers a unique marking scheme (you get to pick the assignments you want to be marked on).
Very good - made class interesting and it rocks being able to pick your own assignments and marking scheme (which you can change right up til the final)
Unique marking system, keeps students' best interests in mind, very friendly and relates to students well. Classes were varied and fairly organized. One of the better profs I've had.
Excellent professor, extremely dedicated, organized, approchable and flexible. Keeps the student's best interst in mind.
not a bad teacher, but god, if you take poetry, she'll make you sing and all that. not only that, she tried to take attendance in a 250 student lecture, and she tries to remember everybody's names.....
Very good teacher. Marknig system superb lets the students strengths shine through. Extremely interested and knowledgeable about genre, brought in guest speakers and arranged for online q & A with novelist. SHE IS SFU's BEST ENGLISH Professor. :)
The best!! Lets you pick what assmts to do and what weight to give them. Fun and interesting; appreciates ppl's different strengths and weaknesses. Highly recommended!
I don't think she likes me very much. She marks really hard. Her comments are unclear on my essay. It almost seems like she stereotyped me when I met her on the first day. I would say she made the easiest english course the hardest for me
Wonderful prof. Quirky and fun. A genuine person who wants everyone to do well in her class. It's nice to be able to pick your own assignments and when they're due. I would take her class again in the future.
lectures are quite dull.. but content is straight forward + easy to understand. i skipped around 1/2 the lectures and still managed a B+.. truly cares about her students, kinda motherly almost.. might seem annoying but u can tell she wants the best
She treats the students like they are in grade school and has all these juvenile group projects that you have to participate in. She does not inspire particularly interesting discussion and I found this to be most boring class I have taken at SFU.
i never went to the lectures cuz they were pretty dull, but i like how she has all her notes online. i also liked how 15% of our mark was on a webpage on a poem. that was easy marks.... :) and her exams were pretty good too. no tricky stuff
I feel like I'm back in elementary school with all the juvenille group projects we've had to do. Too many books on the reading list. Do the exam instead of the reading journal, it's less work. Only take this class if you really need it.
boring lectures sometimes, but easy marks for the webpage!! not a bad course, pretty straightforward material. but she does seem motherly when teaching, at times... *shudder*
There were too many books on the reading list but overall a great course and relatively easy because her marking system allows you to capitalize on your strengths. Nicky is extremely approachable & helpful - would definitely take another course with her.
Rather too perky, but quite helpful; she lays out the subject matter clearly. She encourages participation, but if you happen to be sitting in her blind spot, you will not get called on even if your hand is raised for half an hour.
the course was easy. nicky is really picky about marking essays - remember to use commas properly! her lectures are really boring - tends to go off topic. tutorials are pretty cheesy. she might be a better high school teacher cuz of her personality.
Great prof!Sure she is nutty, but she is entertaining, especially for those 4hr night classes. The grading structure is awesome, choose the journal. She is a harder marker than it would seem, but you're an English student do what you're expected to do! :-)
Interesting course, good prof. A lot of discussion that often doesnt include u. Webct, lots of writing, but creative formats. Very encouraging and pleasant prof. Content is female empowered.
Very knowledgeable about the subject, seems genuinely intersted in what she teaches. Interesting and engaging lectures, encourages discussion. Assignments are a bit tough, though. Friendly and approachable. I would definetly take another class with Nicky.
Some fanciful activities are fun and educational -- those of Nicky Didicher are neither. Her tutorials are childish to the point of cruelty. You will be forced to compose poetry and letters to your classmates. She will mock your aspirations, then cackle over the remains of your spirit. Be warned.
Quirky and cute. Fair and maybe even easy marking. Advantageous marking scheme. In a small class, she didn't provide full-length lectures on a regular basis; however, she encouraged discussion and was heavy on group work. Recommended.
rather go into coma than take a class with this teacher. she doesn't teach, and grades like a robot. She doesn't offer much insight into the literature. Novel chosen by her was unselfconsciously described as the "Archies of the 18-th century".
I liked this prof. She's a fair marker and her evaluation components are easier and more interesting than the usual Engl course. However, I wouldn't participate in her classes as she can really cut you down. Even her remarks on assignments are often quite harsh.
HARD HARD CLASS! the stuff she goes thru in lecture is totally not relevant 2 da course.. not reali testable n goes quite off-topic fairly often! u dun hv 2 listen in lecture, evy1 just goes for the attendance mark. useless overhead material..never reali mentions abt the dramas we need 2 read BAD!
lectures are horrible and put you to sleep. She goes over irrelevant stuff to the course content, She picks on students for answers, always extends the class and doesnt let ppl go if they dont answer her questions, attendance in lectures counts, shes unorganized and all over the place, AWFUL CLASS!
She is a wonderful teacher, makes lectures super interesting, is very flexible with the assignments and encourages creativity, the BEST English prof I have had so far.
Grow up 1st years! This is a prof who knows her stuff-learn from her! She is knowledgeable and will help you improve yourself! She is perhaps "eccentric" from a certain perspective, but she is engaged in what she teaches. U paid 4 classes-so attend them! Learn something from 1 of the better profs u will ever have!
Excellent professor, really cares abou her students, likes "student centered" learning, ie. we choose what we learn and how we are graded on it. Helpful with feedback and papers.
course content is boring and so are her lectures. All over the place and unorganized. Takes attendance in lectures, so show up. She belongs in teaching elementary schools. Has no sense of time preparation, always lets u off late for ur next class. If u pay attention you'll do fine, Tas were helpful. I got a B+ in this course. Class not recommended
This class is probably the most boring class i've ever taken! Nicky shold be teaching elementary school so she can sings her poems with little kids!
Nicky is awesome- I cannot get enough of her! One of the best English profs at SFU as she is very clear and even lets students chose which assignments they do, when they are due and how much they are worth percentage wise. After they are marked, the student can increase or decrease their weight! Lectures are organized and thorough.
Nicky is great, as has been stated she pretty much allows you to format your own course according to your likes and dislikes (ex. presentation vs. your own creative piece). I took a 4 hour night class, yet her interest in the course material does not allow you to lose focus. Take her (and especially this class) if you can get in
kind of an odd person, but she seems nice. it doesn't matter how she marks unless she's your TA. Pretty lightweight compared to other english classes. You don't have to talk in class, cause there are those 5 - 10 people who want to answer every single question. i didn't like the class, but i think i would have hated any other english class.
She is alright, nothing enticing or extra involving. Bland sense of humour.
Very nice lady. Willing to help. Clear explanations. Very enuthiastic with her teaching subjects. Knowledgable. Makes learning the subject fun and easy.
Interesting prof with extremely unique and sometimes controversial views. Do not take if you want an easy A because that will be next to impossible. Tough marker, but lets you choose which assignments you want to do. I ended up with a B+, but that was a struggle and other classes suffered for it, would not really recommend her.
You will ace this course if you write persuasive and argumentative essays. Just be in touch with your thoughts and ideas. or just bs!
Nicky is engaging, knowledgeable, and approachable. However, she takes the "student centered learning" approach too far. A lot of students just don't know very much. I'd rather attend a lecture where I learn about literature rather than spend half the class listening to irrelevant anecdotes from other people's childhoods.
She's too much into WebCT and lectures are boring filled with discussions, you don't really learn anything from them. Just read the plays and you'll be fine.
I took this class because I was interested in the subject. I thought I was taking a class about drama. It turns out I was just taking a class about feminism with a completely self-absorbed professor. No one knows how to ruin a course like Didicher. I'm going to make sure I never take another one of her courses.
Probably one of the most elementary school style profs at the university. Too much WEBCT. Your not taking a class about drama.. With my section she talked way too much about gender and sexuality. I learned absolutely nothing and had zero motivation to attend classes. I would rate her a 2/10. *she gets 2 because shes pretty engaged in the class.
Most uninformative lectures I've ever attended. The only reason I actually did attend them was to get participation marks. she's the type of prof u either love or hate. I highly suggest another course, unless you are really into drama
Easy course, very few assignments. Lectures are useful some of the time. She has too much class discussion which is a waste of time unless you like hearing the opinions of a bunch of 1st years. But if you go to the class and read the plays, the exam is very easy.
HORRIBLE! i really regret taking this course. she's fairly nice but her lectures r just so useless, i had no clue what was going to be on the final exam becuz there were too much pointless discussions during lectures and VERY few notes(lectures seem very unprepared & useless & boring) - overall, very disappointed
Had us spend $25 on a book, then we chose poems...much better than buying expensive books! Her grading scheme is great. First year students on here should accept her eccentricities...she's a great prof! She cares more about teaching than a lot of the other profs I had.
With the grading scheme as it is, its impossible to actually get a grade out of the class that you can value. Sure you can walk away with an A but compared to what exactly if no one else has the same assignments, grade weights or requirements. Made the material interesting though I'll give her that.
Nicki's grading scheme is amazing, allowing me to follow my own particular interests and get one hell of a good grade! The "dramatic readings" were a waste of my time (and some of them were just gawd awful!) I did NOT like how the lectures would digress into discussions - that's ok for an upper-level 2 hr seminar, but not a lower-level 1 hr lecture
Very unclear with what we need to know for our exams :(
Possibly the worst professor I have ever had. One lecture we edited a wikipedia article regarding the play. Not only are the in-lecture activities tedious and dragged out, she constantly refers to plays that aren't part of the course materials.
many little assignments. we made a class wiki page, which was a horror. far too much group work, which wasn't so much work as it was group. much too much time spent on democratically choosing the class's proceedings. Not enough learning. But, that said, she is very interested in her work. that makes the class bearable, sort of.
Taking this class is much like taking 3 classes in one (English, History, Philosophy. Expect to participate a lot and work in groups. She takes attendance. Allows students to do their grade weighting. Final exam is very difficult as there are no clues to the essay question which means one has to study a high portion of readings in great detail.
The worst prof on my lists. Treats students as if they are in high school. Lectures are disorganized, and she just doesn't seem to give the right vibes. She has made my favourite course a complete drag.
In the course outline, take "Gender Role" as "Women's Studies". Turned a class that is supposed to be about drama into a class about feminism. Some plays analysed are interesting, yet the class seems to focus on the feminist point of view far too much, ignoring other important elements. Change title of course to "Women's Studies" please.
Disorganized. The webct based notes and modules suck. There was little to no learning about anything. Treated students like children.
Believes in student-centered learning, meaning she doesn't really teach anything. Knowledgeable if you have questions and ask her face-to-face, but teaches lectures by asking "So what did everybody think?" - not exactly helpful. Fair marking scheme but essay topics are terrible (stuff along the lines of "Who would you cast in a film adaptation?")
Worst prof. Incredibly condescending towards her students. Tries to make lectures into large discussions (which is nicer in tutorial not in a class of 500 students wanting to learn about the material that was read...)
Treats students like young children. Lectures are terrible and are only attended for participation. Grammar lessons useless. Wiki assignment even worse. Encourages quantity over quality for participation. Organized chaos. Do NOT take any of her classes. Worst prof I have had.
Had her in 103, had a bad time, decided to give her another chance since it's a 300 level class. BIG MISTAKE. The Wiki assignment was a complete waste of time. All we do is "Student Centred Learning" meaning she's too lazy to teach.
Terrible choice to take this class. Only take it if you are interested in the subject, because it is so boring. Lectures were miserably boring and the content was so bizarre and pointless. If you are taking an engl course as a requirement for another field, do not take this one. Take anything else. Not this one!
Nicky is creative, engaging, and particular. She very much values her students' knowledge and shapes the class to their interests. Her methods are unconventional (e.g. she does not merely lecture at the front of the class) which is a refreshing change. She is very clear about what is required for a good mark.
Nicky is oddly inconsistent in what she expects from students. She will be extremely lenient with topics and grading schemes if you talk to her about it within her time frame. Her late policies, though, are totally non-negotiable. Also some useless class material, but overall, interesting. You set your own level and she rewards you for meeting it.
I don't feel like I'm learning anything. Lectures are pretty useless, and very little time is spent actually discussing literature. Worst English prof I've had yet. Made me reconsider my major in English.
Dr. Didicher is AWESOME. She cares about the success of her students & is always willing to help, thoroughly knowledeable, includes interesting activities to keep class fun. Humble, sweet prof. Don't miss classes & pay attention, participate. I really enjoyed everything we covered (Pope poetry). She even gives grammar tips to help you write better!
Overall I liked this course, but somethings should be known. 1) participation is mandatory and she tracks down how much you speak in class, 2) she knows her stuff, but gives you too much info and you get away from the primary text, 3)STRICT on grammar. I would suggest seeing her in office hours she is very helpful, but marking is really specific
She's a very nice person who is willing to help students by going over outlines and drafts. However, there's a huge discrepancy between her marking scheme and what one would believe she expects given the work done during class. Lectures were 50% useless as 50% of the time she made us do group work rather than give information about the works.
I really disliked Didicher's teaching style. She's not a mean/rude person, but I found lectures almost useless. She really likes analysing things from a feminist perspective - so if you don't like that, don't take the course. Marking was okay. Also, sometimes she makes offhand remarks that can be offensive to some groups of people..
If they said this would be a Gender Studies ENG course I wouldn't have taken it. WAY too many references to female and male sexual organs which didn't make sense with discussion. Also made some offhand comments that were seen as an insult to other cultures/ethnicity. By far worst class this term. Unless someone else it teaching it, dont take it!!
Nicky is always organized for class and puts a lot of time into her prepping. She will also always make time for a student who needs help with any aspect of the course. However, I found some of Nicky's grading to be a bit harsh and sometimes her expectations were confusing. If you take this class be ready to participate as she records it.
Nicky is quite possibly one of the nicest professors I have had at SFU. She is truly interested in helping you. For a 2nd year class her marking was fair. She is quite focused on 'student centred learning' which, can make things more difficult to learn at times but she is always willing to answer questions. Be ready to participate in her class!
Didicher is a second-wave feminist and she lets you know it on day one. Every interpretation she makes is through this lens, which is tiresome. All symbolism is either phallic or yonic, and everything is the womb. The lectures are ok, you don't need to pay attention, and you can just write that everything is sexism or racism and get good marks.
For the love of god, DON'T TAKE a class with her! A literature class was turned into nothing more than another feminist preaching the feminist agenda. You WILL NOT learn anything new, I promise you that. You will be graded very unfairly. She will take 10% off papers for things never explained. You're GPA will suffer, you've been warned...
Lectures are pretty dry, and grading is tough, but so long as you actually put in the effort, you should get a decent grade. Nicky makes time for extra help, whether it's by email or after class.
This class was all student based. You get to choose your assignments, grading & readings. The problem is, that the readings don't flow nicely together, or have a common/ongoing theme. I would recommend doing the in person draft marking with Professor Didicher, as you get a clear idea of what she looks for in essays!
Nicky allows you to choose your grade weight which is tough, because sometimes you can choose unwisely. You also get to choose your own assignments and due dates. Nicky has very interesting lectures but it is student based so be prepared to be social. SO helpful, take advantage of office hours to figure out exactly what she's looking for. Best prof
Nicky is amazing! Focused on Student-Centred learning, which was nice because you were able to pick assignments and gradings that fit your abilities and interests. Not an easy marker, it definitely benefits to meet with her during office hours for essay/assignment prep. I've taken two classes with her and 100% would take a class with her again.
Nicky is a great professor, she's very personable and she's the only teacher that I've felt extremely comfortable approaching and asking for help. That being said her lectures can be long if you're not interested in the material and they can get a little off topic with constant participation from students mandatory.
Nicky had me extremely worried at the beginning of the semester. Her course seemed unmanageable and too challenging for a 200 level course. However, once I got into the course a bit more it all started to clear up and by the end of the semester I was so glad I stuck through it!!
Had for intersession, so there was a lot of reading condensed. She allowed us to determine were are marks go. So if you like essays and suck at participation, you can weigh your grades accordingly. She always seems available for extra help. She also incorporates a lot of student centered learning and ways for you to participate online.
Nicky was really insightful about the subject matter, but could be demanding about things like perfect grammer on essays. A little dry, but always willing to help out her students.
Nicky is one of my favourite professors at SFU. Her unique and personalized grading scale is effective and student driven and she truly cares about helping you succeed. She is incredibly organized which makes classes go by so fast, and she has a fun side to her as well. She is a shining example of an educator and an all around great lady.
She is one of the toughest profs out there. When you ask her for help, shes sarcastic and puts you down. BEWARE DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HER. Shes ugly and old and really needs to retire. Shes disgusting and mean. She is a horrible person. WOULD NEVER TAKE AGAIN.
It is an easy course compared with other English courses. You can decide your assignment component and grade weighing. Keep the grade balanced and choose assignments wisely. Nicky is a tough grader that she deducts one mark for each grammar mistake up tp ten marks in your essay. There are group works and discussions in every lecture take a long time.
Nicky was never specific about what she really wanted and she always had us guessing. I say us because I spoke with a handful of students from this class (5/18) and they agreed. Moreover, we spent more time on the various theories she brought to class than the actual texts themselves... I didn't lean anything new in this class.
Awesome professor and not as scary as others seem to make her out to be. She has a cool lecture style and it's obvious to tell that she is passionate about what she does. Extremely willing to help students and provides very helpful feedback for assignments. While her grading can be tough, I think it is quite fair.
Students can choose due dates, assignments, and marking schemes. She is available for help and incorporates various learning methods into the course. Although I am doing well right now (I havent taken the exam yet), I feel that office hours are a belittling and unhelpful experience. For these reasons, I do not recommend taking her class.
Spoke with her before/after my assignments and felt that her attitude was dismissive. A student received a low grade because their attendance record was low. Attendance shouldnt affect an essay grade, but perhaps Im wrong. I feel that her marking is unfair. I have taken classes with difficult profs before and have always been successful.
She has a strict grammar policy that punishes poor grammar and rewards perfect grammar. Got her to look at my essay for grammar, but still lost marks in areas that she looked over previously. Feedback is detailed but she doesnt like to explain herself in person.
Nicky gives us opportunities to do well and is accessible for extra help. However, I find her to be abrupt, tough, and unapproachable especially in office hoursand I have seen her many times. I really wanted to love this class. I spoke with students and some felt the same (although some didnt, which is fair).
Nicky allows students to choose our assignments and the grading weight. However, she isn't clear on what she expects from you and is extremely harsh with marking. Seeing her at office hours isn't helpful either, as she can be dismissive. After a whole semester, she honestly did not teach many essential topics and lectures were useless.
Nicky has clearly put a lot of thought into her approach to education. She is a good teacher, though sometimes her personality comes across as bitter and condescending like someone who has been bullied throughout their life. People seem to like her. I did not. Course content was a boring disappointment. Nevertheless, she is a skilled educator.
I went to her office hours 6/7 times during the semester and spoke in class. However, on the first day of class I mentioned that I would be missing the editing class because my partner was graduating from police acadamy. She said to bad, my grade would reflect this. Received a c+ in attendance ( I only missed the 1 class). - absurd in my opinion.
General lack of compassion. Don't take this course if you care about yourself or others.
i loved having dr. didicher as a prof! these negative reviews are so crazy to me, because i'm in my 3rd yr. now and it's safe to say that she's hands down one of the best teachers at sfu. she's really caring towards her students and extremely passionate. people say she's a tough marker but i didn't really feel that at all. 10/10
Such a kind prof! I very much enjoyed her class, despite English being one of my worst subjects. She was very engaging and you could tell that she cared a lot about her students. The books read for the semester were very interesting and I learned a lot about life and myself in this class.
I'm an English major, and I really did not like Nicky's class. Her expectations were unclear, and despite this, she still marked hard. She gave me a terrible mark on my project for no reason, and when I asked her to explain why, she couldn't.
Nicky did not even pretend to care about the wellbeing of her students in the middle of a global pandemic. Grading criteria was never explained and instructions were always unclear. For the most part, you had to teach yourself. This course had so much potential but was one of the worst courses I've ever taken. Avoid this prof at all costs.
Nicky is one of the best professors I have ever had. She is kind, compassionate, and super funny too. I took this class for the Q credit but left throughly surprised at how much fun I had. Definitely talk to her one on one because she is super accommodating and goes out of her way to help you succeed. I look forward to taking more courses with her!
As an intended English major, this class made me change my mind. It is extremely uncommon that the lecture itself is useful. The texts are interesting enough, and the content is alright, but the lectures are literally Nicky talking for 10 mins and the rest is opinions from peers which suck. She seems nice but save yourself the despair.
Nicky fosters discussion quite well. I normally never participate in class discussion, but I really felt inclined to with Nicky. All of her assignments were engaging and had many options to be as applicable as possible to the student. The late penalty was pretty lax, with only a 1% deduction per day late. Overall cool prof, if you like English.
Nicky was so delightful. Funny and she knows what she is talking about. Our class was mostly self marked, and we could choose whether or not to be marked on participation.
I took ENGL113W and loved it. Nicky is an excellent professor; very laid-back and clearly cares for her students. The texts are not very difficult and the creative project is great for anyone who likes theatre/scriptwriting. She prepares the class well for the exam, just pay attention and it'll be smooth sailing.
Nicky is a chill prof who makes the class engaging. The creative project is fun, and she preps you well for the exam. I found unstuck study super helpful for study prep too.
