Lectures are easy to understand, some of the material can be difficult if you don't always pay attention. Book is primarily used for quizzes. Smokin Notes will help A LOT on exams. There are THM clicker questions in class, which are easy points if just answer them. Overall, a relatively easy class.
Really liked her, taking her BSC2011 course in the fall.
She is a very knowledgeable professor and you can tell she absolutely loves biology. However the exams can be tricky even if you go to class and read the book. I suggest studying way in advance for the exams just to make sure you know all the material. Some questions are really specific and tricky. Overall she's a good professor and wants to help!
Don't underestimate her portion of BSC 2010. Her exam was by far the trickiest one of the three!
Honestly her portion of the class is very confusing... smokin notes alone does not help. She is very boring and annoying during lecture... you can tell she is interested in biology.. but her exams are tricky!
She lectures very fast and can be confusing if you're a note taker. Posts lectures after class only. Test was tricky, hardest section out of the 3 because of her, not the content.
Talks with her hands, which is more distracting than you would think. You will think that the material is all common sense (which it is) and you do not need to study much. The exam will destroy you. Easy material, tricky test format and answers (all of the above, none of the above, A & B, more than one of these is true). Worst of the 3 professors
had her for the Animals unit of Bio 2. Decent lecturer, but there's A LOT of content which got overwhelming quickly. I got 75 on the exam, but finished the class with a B+. Smokin Notes help, but its good to space out the reading of them, because they are CRAZY long.
I thought this lady was gonna be better than Baer, but she was worst (never took Baer but I heard he is tough too). She presents the material in class in a very simple way but her exams long essay questions with no room for error. She wants straight answers from the book. Her grading is OK but the exams are brutal, be ready for a C or a drop. AVOID
I completed this course online, so my experience is entirely with her recorded lectures and assignments. I thought the lectures were great. She was excited and invested in the material, which made the lectures easy to watch. The course was not difficult, but there were so many assignments! It is easy to get an A, but the work load is quite sizable.
The class was pretty easy. Her lectures were'nt that long and were fairly interesting. However, there were too many assignments. Also, I had to buy materials for some of the experiments because I didn't have them in my household but they are pretty common household items such as coffee filters or raisins.
She was an alright lecturer. But the testwas impossible. I studied almost a total 23 hours for it and got a 50. There's not much to choice you have in professor selection so just make sure you get an A on ONE exam to bump your grade up.
Class isn't too bad, MUST buy the textbook and copypaste it into word and take extremely in depth notes to get anywhere near a decent grade on her quizzestests. Be ready to spend about 12 hours a week on this class, it's timely and she provides NO extra credit opportunities, and she doesn't round any grades at the end.
very nice, but multiple choice doesn't exist on her tests. There comes a point where studying and memorization can translate to a good score, and then there's a point where it's just luck on if you can retain facts. Id say the testing crosses that bridge. Clepping an A depends on if you can retain an absurd amount of info. not critical thinking
This is a very difficult class to take because of how the assignments are structured. You have to go onto LaunchPad for some of your assignments, and the Learning Curve (practice questions) are very different than the quiz questions. Also, you can take hours of notes, but will still have a difficult time on the quiz. It is impossible to main an A.
She teaches in broad terms but then takes away credit on her *short answer exams* for not answering concisely but with "adequate details." Though she is available if you need help, she is very unclear of what she expects of you. This class was a trial-and-error course that decreased my GPA.
I spent hours and hours to study for her quizzes but the quizzes questions were way to advance for an Intro to Bio class. She even put questions about genetics on the quiz, and for me that was very difficult because I've never taken a genetics course before. Overall it is very hard to maintain a good grade in her class.
RUN! ton of works
Awful LA sessions. Wish she stuck to lecture format. Read the book, and prepare for lectures to be pointless regurgitations of material. But read the book regardless, or you will fail.
Do whatever she instructs you to do at the beginning of semester. Don't procrastinate is a key element to success in her portion of the class. Study hard for her exam. She is a very enthusiastic lecturer and very engaging. I would say LA session is not that helpful as compared to normal lectures.
She was a very fast lecturer and you have to write fast. Everyone says her test is hard for the animals section but she gives you a study guide that you have to fill in yourself for each chapter even though there were 13, it helped a lot. I did all of the study guides and reviewed the smoking notes a little and got an A on her exam. Its doable
Do not take this class! I starts off easy but about half way through it becomes hard and quite frankly makes no sense. Quizzes are surprisingly hard even with video lectures and textbook. Currently procrastinating so that I don't have to figure out an assignment that makes absolutely no sense.
This is a really frustrating class, yet somehow I have managed a 95. There are a few assignments that make no sense & are graded harshly. The lecture quizzes are easy if you write down almost everything she says. The launchpad tests are hard & love to trick you (I ALWAYS miss one question). Prepare to take at least 8-10 pages of notes every week!
Overall the class is pretty simple. There are no tests and only quizzes. It's nice because you pretty much know what to expect every week for your modules. However, she assigns ALOT of assignments that can seem pretty pointless and are time consuming. Set aside a good amount of time each week for this course.
I loved Dr. Gerlach's class. Her lectures were broke down into easily manageable chunks, and made sense to me. The textbook was great. The assignments were a little frustrating, and I rarely got full credit on those, but there are so many other quizzes and assignments that you have a ton of buffer in your grade. Would totally recommend.
This was honestly one of my favorite classes. I learned a lot but nothing was extremely difficult or taxing. The module each week could be done in a few hours, but do it sooner rather than later because some assignments do take a little longer. Her lectures were actually interesting and she's a pretty cool person. I would take this class again.
The class is generally easy as I did not watch a single lecture and did fine. The lectures per week are usually under 50 minutes anyway if you were to watch them so it's not time consuming. No exams, just a weekly amount of assignments due every Friday. The homework can be very tedious and time consuming but all in all it wasn't too difficult.
She taught the Evolution section of Bio 1 and class was pretty boring. The lectures feel like they are being dragged on and I look around the room to see that the majority of students are zoned out. So, Smokin' Notes was my lifeline. I ended up with an A- and I did the worst on her test, which was supposed to be the easiest. Try to pay attention!
Professor was not helpful. Every week there were very weird, time consuming, and nonsensical projects due along with 3 exams. Grading was very unclear and if you ask for clarification, you won't get it. I have taken biology courses before and done extremely well as it is a subject I enjoy, but not with this professor.
For each module there's one discussion, one assignment, about three Canvas quizzes, and some Launchpad activities + quiz. It's a lot of workload but she gives you the entire week and it's all due on Fridays. However, she's a tough grader and her grading criteria is not clear at all. Still pretty easy for a bio class.
She's a nice enough professor, but if you take the online section, be prepared to do a lot of busy work. On the upside only assignments, discussion board and quizzes, no tests and no final. It was a fairly easy way to get a Biology credit but you do need to put time in.
Overall she was a good lecturer and her test questions were pretty straight forward. Her lectures went pretty fast, but I think that's because she had so much to cover in 5 weeks. I'd recommend.
Amazing professor! She really wants you to do well and will provide all material in order for you to succeed! Definitely recommend taking her class and I really wish there were more professors like her.
Super into what she's teaching. During my semester she sent out an announcement on how to deal with test anxiety. Really wants people to succeed. Gets criticized for being hard but she just wants you to have a well rounded amount of information.
She requires plenty of busy work. She posts online lectures with powerpoints to follow along with. She requires readings, various activities, time-consuming assignments, and quizzes all due on the Friday of each week. Class is manageable but overall work heavy. Don't rely on online answers!!!
Prof Gerlach gives a lot of assignments for this Biological Sciences class. Each week there is a required module to complete which includes assignments, quizzes, and discussions. Overall it was time consuming but not very difficult. No tests/exams and because there was a lot of assignments your grade has a cushion. Recommend for science credit.
Dr. Gerlach was extremely knowledgeable. Her section on animals covers 13 chapters, & the smokin notes were about 200 pages long. With that being said, if you study a lot and complete all of her study guides you can do pretty well on the test (she also curved). Would recommend but you got to work for it.
I took Gerlach for Vertebrate Biodiversity and she was great. She is funny and makes the concepts easy to understand. The exams have a lot of details, and this is a memorization-heavy class, but if you apply yourself you should get a decent grade. There are some short essays.. All in all this a fun class and Nicole is a good professor.
Dr. Gerlacis a fair and knowledgeable professor. She makes the class interesting, but there isn't a lot of free time because she needs to go over 1 chapter per lecture. I recommend starting to study early. Her exam is fair, but it covers 13 chapters worth of material so you need to be prepared.
This class had a million assignments, but they were all super easy. There were no exams in this class, which was GREAT. Highly recommend this course.
This class is 100% online so the only time you associate with Gerlach is through her pre recorded lectures or if you have a question about something. Everything else is graded by a TA. Now the class is not difficulty as long as you stay on top of your work. Each module has a decent amount of assignments which can be a pain, just stay on top of it
Don't take this course if you're taking other busy classes. This class is really easy but the amount of time you'll spend doing assignments is ridiculous. I'd recommend it for the gen-ed credit since there are no exams and it's an easy A, but beware of hours of homework to do every week. Dr. Gerlach is nice and gives straightforward lectures.
Dr. Gerlach's class was very interesting and I really enjoyed her lectures. That being said, she is an extremely tough grader and very nit-picky with answers which makes it difficult for most students to get an A on anything. I don't think she likes to give A's out in general so if you're trying to maintain your GPA, this is not the class for you.
The class was certainly interesting but she is a very tough grader - I think one of the worst (if not the worst) grader I've had here in my 3 years at UF. The amount of time I put into this class was rediculus for the grade I'm going to receive even though I do thoroughly understand the material. She takes forever to grade anything as well.
Dr. Gerlach is good and explaining the material both in and out of class. Tests are difficult but if you attend lectures and take good notes you should be fine. Lots of writing assignments for this class but they weren't that hard.
She assigned a lot of work, so do not fall behind. Make sure you're reading the textbook and taking really good notes. She does not post the content of her slides. Be prepared for Learning Catalytics. There is also a lab, that I did not find useful and consisted of worksheets. I recommend having a partner for the project, it's a lot of work.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! If I could have done it over I wouldn't have. I was taking biochem and evolution and managed to get an A in both of them except for this one. I put in so much work, time, and effort into this class (actually more than for any of the other classes) and will be lucky if I get a C. Learn from my mistake people!
This class was honestly one of the hardest classes I've taken at UF, if not the hardest - and I've gone all the way to biochem and genetics. I have done every assignment - received a grade of 60-80% and I really thought I deserved As - and participated in class. I might not even receive my diploma next week because of how tough of a grader she is.
Dr. Gerlach is definitely passionate about what she is talking about. The class certainly is not difficult by any means. However, there are a ton of assignments. I actually prefer classes like this, so I really did not mind this class. I can see why people wouldn't like it though. But good news is there are no exams.
Do not take this professor. She is the most ridiculous grader I've ever come across. It's impossible to get a good grade on her exams or frankly anything for that matter. I worked super hard for this class and have always been an A student. This class will lower your GPA. She clearly doesn't like to help her students succeed.
Terrible lecturer! She teaches broad concepts, but tests are minutiae details straight from the book. She even points out that exams may give test anxiety, and to go see the wellness center (WHO SAYS THAT!). Her grading is all over the place, and the fact that she has to curve so much is telling enough. Her pacing back-and-forth is annoying!
The worst grader. I went above and beyond in assignments and exams but haven't made anything above an 80%. Organic chemistry is much easier to get a better grade in. Don't take this professor.
Easy class but incredibly tedious.
The class is great bc no exams. However, there is about 10-12 assignments every week. It's incredibly tedious and sometimes time consuming. If you're like me, in a dorm, her stupid projects where u need a million materials, its annoying, expensive, and inconvenient. Easy A but annoying A.
The class started of very easy with few assignments per week. It progressed to about 10-12 assignments per week. The assignments are not easy and they are very time consuming. This is a lot of work for a introductory bio class. She does not care about the well being of her students. Would not recommend.
This class is good because there are no exams and it's literally high school bio. It's very easy but there are SO many assignments so be prepared. Most quizzes/assignments can be found on quizlet. Some experiments require you to get extra materials (ex: coffee filters, peroxide, etc.) so that was annoying but overall an easy A if you do the work
Ok her rating is too low. This class is so easy and she gives you all the tools to be successful. Moved dates for me while I was in the hospital. Great Gen ed class.
All busy work. Took to fulfill gen ed requirement. Lots and lots of hw but can find all online. Pretty easy stuff. Stay ahead in the class bc everything is due on Friday nights so get it done before hand. Very much ready to be done with this class.
Dr. Gerlach is a real gem! Her lectures were very interesting and I really enjoyed her class. Not only was her class material interesting, but she was a very nice professor and her TAs were great! If you read the textbook before all of her quizes and complete all the assignments on time you're basically guaranteed an A! Great class!
Lots of busy work for homework but you can find the answers out there.
Dr. Gerlach is one of the best teachers I have ever had! She knows her material very well. She does not post notes online so you do have to come to class to do well on the exams. She always answers questions to the best of her ability if you do not understand something and provides a study guide to help you study for the exams.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN EASY BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE GEN ED PLEASE TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!! Yes, there is a lot of homework, some are super annoying, but overall if you do all the work you will get an A!! I HATE Science and I am doing so well in the course, it is very interesting. Please take this class! Gerlach is so sweet and her lectures are awesome!
Class consists entirely of busy work. No tests, no exams. Most activities are quizzes, but every answer is available online. Sometimes you have to write up a couple paragraphs, but they are reasonable graders. Take if you want to get an easy A for bio credit but don't mind doing a bunch of busy work every week.
Pretty straightforward class; be mindful of the weekly deadlines as late submissions are heavily penalized. Most, if not all, of your work will be graded by a TA. If you pay attention to the grading rubrics you'll be good to go. Dr. Gerlach lets you work a week ahead which helps out if your schedule and life is busy. Just meet the deadlines!
Lots of busy work, honestly there are assignments that felt like things I did in elementary school. Some tests and quizzes have questions marked wrong despite it being word for word in the textbook, lecture, or extra video. This class has made me absolutely miserable legitimately since week one.
I went above and beyond when it came to studying for this class. There was so much to memorize and we always had some kind of assignment due on top of everything else. She definitely knows her stuff, but if you dont understand something, its intimidating to ask her questions. She expects a lot from us, especially in the lab portion. Be careful
This class was in the back of mind after I finished all my other classes for the week. The quizzes were easy but the papers were graded tougher. No midterms, finals, or exams. Many assignments but fairly easy. You do not have to watch the lecture videos to pass assignments.
You do get a lot of good information from the class if you read the textbook. The quizzes are easy and the assignments are graded fairly. You don't necessarily need to watch the lectures but they help to further your knowledge on the subject(s) in the units. The workload is a lot but it is easy to do, so don't stress out when you first see it all!
I have had an absolutely awful experience in this class. The amount of work that this lady assigns is ridiculous. There are about 50 quizzes throughout the class and many of the answers are nowhere to be found. Not in the textbook, her lectures, or online. The science experiments are also terribly annoying and put you in an awful mood. Save yourse
I took this class online and it is awful. There is so much work required for this course that it is ridiculous. Do not take if you need a biological science credit. I had to take it for my major but if you do too take it in person, others have told me all you have to do is study for exams rather than 8 busy work assignments each week.
TAKE THIS AS YOUR GEN ED!! This class is SO easy but there's a TON of assignments. They're very easy, but don't wait until the day of. Do it very early and you can finish the class early and never stress about having too much to do. It's all easy, just a good 2 hours of easy work a week. Dr. Gerlach cares a lot and responds to questions very fast.
Took it online got an A+. It is A LOT of busywork and TA's are not easy on grading assignments. No midterm or final. definitely take if u need a science. I learned a lot but I wouldn't say its an easy class. If you put in the work and do assignments ahead, you will get a good grade. Need to be organized. 9 assignments due on 1 day.
Awful class. SO much busy work. No exams but not worth taking this class. The assignments are very tricky and are made to confuse you. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
I took this class online during the summer and it was super easy. Yes there a lot of assignments but if you manage your time correctly, you can get them done. I would take her class if I were you.
I loved going to her lectures. She really knows how to teach and her exams are very fair.
I really enjoyed her lectures. She knows how to make class engaging and she's very approachable
No exams and most of the assignments are on quizlet. Super easy class if you just need the bio credit. There are a bunch of assignments every week which can be time consuming but theyre really easy,
This class has a lot of busy work and so many assignments each week. Gerlach is a tough grader and will rarely give you a 100% on assignments. A lot of random projects that you need to buy materials for.
The class is very easy and there are no exams. Watch her lectures and you will do fine on the assignments. There are a lot of assignments but a module can be completed within 2 days if you sit down and get it done. She responds quick to emails and is willing to help.
took this class for a GE - there's so much work. like 5-8 assignments minimum per module all due on the same day every week. nothing is super challenging honestly but it's a very time consuming course. no exams, just lots of weekly assignments but once you get the hang of it its not that bad
I absolutely loved having her as a professor. She truly cares about her students. Her powerpoints and everything on Canvas is extremely organized, and she teaches you exactly what you need to know for the exam. (It's sad that this is honestly rare among professors). The exams are mostly short response but I always feel prepared after her lectures
This class was probably my hardest for the semester. As of now, her exams are long (30-38 questions) and youre expected to complete them in 50 minutes so you dont have tons of time to recheck your work; luckily the topics are all pretty interesting! Shes a tough grader, but the hard work definitely pays off! She does exam curves & extra credit!
This class is incredibly annoying. There is a TON of work due each week, so much that it is difficult to put time into any other class. Most assignments arent difficult but some are very cumbersome. Biggest issue it that directions and requirements on how to complete assignments are 3-4 paragraphs yet somehow still left unclear...
Most annoying class I have ever taken. I use to be interested in Bio-sciences but this class has completely turned me off. There is a separate Lab section but there were Labs in the Non-lab section ... WHAT??? And the labs were completely asinine and pure busy work. I didn't learn anything new from the labs than I did from the 3-4 quizes per chpt
I honestly loved taking this class with Professor Gerlach, because it was much more organized than other classes and you were given all the materials necessary to succeed. There is a lot of work but its not that bad if you space out your assignments. There is no final exam so you dont have to worry about performance on those exams.
Dr. Gerlach makes learning Biology enjoyable. Her class is mainly structured on easy assignments with no exams, just weekly quizzes and assignments. There is a bit of reading, but not really that bad in the end, as the textbook is super easy to understand. All of the deadlines are hard deadlines, so you will have to finish your work on time.
Since Bio 2 switches professors, it's hard to adapt to a new way of doing things. Professor Gerlach made the process so much easier. I heavily depended on her lectures and the notes that I took and passed her exam with a 98%. I had rely on Smokin notes when it came to other professors but I didn't do as well as I did on her exam.
Ridiculous rules everywhere (password protected quizzes? literally for what) with too many assignments expected to be completed within a 2-3 day time frame. Forces you to work in groups, overall set up of the class is confusing and disorganized and you can never get an answer out of her, she'll always tell you to "check the FAQ."
Do NOT take this class online unless you want six (I am NOT EXAGGERATING) six quizzes per week along with multiple completely useless assignments, long lectures, and textbook reading. One day we had 19 assignments due in one day I kid you not. The material isn't difficult, but there are so many useless assignments/quizzes and she accepts NO late work
Took this class my first semester at UF. I think it is pretty easy b/c you don't have any exams, and all quizzes and assignments are open notes. Also takes academic integrity really seriously. Some of the projects are tedious though... Besides that easy GE class - def would recommend.
She was kind and responded to my email promptly. As for the actual class, it was not my favorite. It was very tedious and the platform used for textbook reading was slightly bulky. There was not a final exam. However, the written assignments were not fun and pretty mundane. I also wish she would have unlocked all of the material in the beginning.
The professor is just fine. I just wanna say don't take BSC2005 unless you HATE biology and want to make it as easy as possible. You get to use your notes on tests. The material goes into less detail than the biology class I took in MIDDLE SCHOOL (I am NOT joking). Plus the assignments often feel like easy busywork - very easy, but time consuming.
I took Vertebrate Biodiversity with Gerlach. She is very clear and concise when she teaches. Her powerpoints online are blank because she encourages students to attend class and take hand-written notes so they can understand the material better. I recommend recording the lectures! Her exams are mostly free-response, so you'll have to memorize a lot
This class isn't necessarily hard, but I got an A-. There's a ton load of work every week that you barely can focus on other classes. Therefore, it becomes overwhelming. The TAs grade pretty tough.
I really enjoyed this class and believe Dr. Gerlach's rating is too low. The modules and weekly assignments are clearly laid out which makes it easy to follow. The assignments were small and relatively easy. The quizzes are all open note and there are no major exams. Additionally, the lectures were so helpful I never needed the textbook!
So so so much busy work for a gen ed. One week we had 19 assignments due in one week (2 modules). On a regular week, we have at least 5-9 assignments due. Quizzes aren't bad and actually pretty easy, but written assignments are graded very hard (rare to even get an A). Pro is there is no exams. OK once you get the hang of it though.
This class has way too much work for a gen ed, especially in an online format during a pandemic. There were regularly 10+ assignments a week, with up to 20+ on harder weeks. The material itself wasn't too hard but the amount of it made the class unbearable. The written assignments were graded very harshly. Professor is really nice but not worth it
Professor Gerlach was very detailed in her lectures. The content was not hard but I was taking much harder classes and always found myself spending the most time on her class. I took her online and there were over 10 assignments weekly on top of reading the chapters and watching the lecture videos (about 3 videos , 10 minutes each).
Hands down the most arduous & time intensive Gen Ed course. The amount of work due each week is surreal; 5 to 7 quizzes, a discussion, a high school like science project requiring the most arbitrary items, and an online lab simulator are examples of some the typical assignments due... and thats a light week. Content's not a problem, the amount is.
Dr. Gerlach was passionate in her lectures but a majority of the work was "busy work" and graded by TA's. The "busy work" grading was also strict. It was an ok class.
Class had so much busywork, but you can work ahead and knock a bunch out at a time. Easy once you get used to it. Gerlach herself was a pain and quick to accuse people of plagiarism. TA's were obnoxious in how they graded highschool level assignments (9.9 out of 10? Come on man). Material was basic, e-book included w/ mandatory online quiz system.
What she expects is very clear from the start of the semester and she has strict policies. The course is organized but the workload is heavy. Assignments are high school level basic, but for some reason half of them have passwords...? Not worth it imo, but if you take the class print out the syllabus, there will be a detailed quiz on it.
This class is a ton of random assignments and they're always due Friday night. The class isn't hard its just a lot of work for a basic bio class.
Spring 2021. Holy Hell there was so much work. Every Friday we had upwards of 7 assignments due. To accomodate drop/add she just moved it to Tuesday of the second week, and to accomodate reading days (2 of them in the last week) she pushed back the deadline one day. Way too much work for a gen ed imo
The class is not hard but it is a lot of dumb busy work. She barely responds to emails and the assignments are graded very harshly by the TAs.
The course material was not difficult, but Dr. Gerlach grades assignments unnecessarily hard. Theres about 7 assignments a week, so participation is certainly necessary, but the assignments are pretty easy to knock out. The lecture videos were helpful, but just read the textbook and you'll be fine.
If science is not your strength I do not recommend taking this class. Dr. Gerlach acts as if biology was all of her students' majors, when this is only a general education class for most students. She assigns like 7-10 assignments every week, and grades harshly.
It is not an exaggeration when I say we had between 7 and 10 assignments per week. This is a course for NON MAJORS. It is usually one paper, 2 quizzes and a bunch of busy work due per week. Not to mention that after your quizzes, tests, etc. you are not allowed to view your right and wrong answers (how are you supposed to learn?).
The worst professor I've had at UF. Her main goal is to catch students for cheating or using unauthorized materials on quizzes that are not even proctored. She is lazy and expects more work out of students than she would ever be willing to put in. Stay away from this class at all costs. Would be better off to take BSC 2010.
Dr. Gerlach provides the resources necessary to do well on the exams (Learning Objectives, study guides for each lecture, and a practice exam). While I thought the practice exam was easier than the actual exam, overall her exam was pretty fair and had a 78 average which is pretty high. She is passionate and willing to help. Great professor!
Dr. Gerlach is a caring person. I needed her class to change majors and it was full, I emailed her before the sem started and she opened more seats so I could register. A lot of high school busy work, and if you take in Summer C like I did, youre looking at up to 35 assigns a week some weeks 15. All easy and doable, but a lot with other classes.
There is so much work in this class that it becomes redundant. The tests are super hard. I would recommend going to the review sessions.
ALL assignments due every Friday (so convenient...) Expect 5-10 each week. The content wasn't too difficult, it was just a lot of work. Her discussions and projects were great! They were my favorite!! Some did take some time, but it easily connected what was taught in my brain. I recommend for Dual-Enroll students if you can time manage!
The actual content of this course is not difficult in the slightest but with the obscure questions with no answer in any of the materials she gives and tough grading on elementary-level assignments it's hard to do well. This is not an exaggeration, there are 3-5 quizzes, 5-7 assignments, and a discussion post due every week on Friday.
so much work, easily 7-10 assignments a week, but they are all SO easy, literally the equivalent of freshman HS bio. Probably the easiest science to take here, just prepare for the work load. It's not hard just time consuming (looking at maybe 3-5 hours depending on the week). As long as you're on top of it, it's manageable
The work is easy, but there's so much of it, and so much is unnecessary. Grading is cumulative not weighted, so I didn't mind that. Sometimes there were activities that were unnecessary.
Biggest waste of my time. There are sooo many assignments a week and the TA's grade very harshly. So hard to do well on all the assignments.
BSC2005 is easy to succeed in if you stay on top of your work each week. So many assignments and quizzes and experiments but asynchronous class is definitely easier than in-person bio or BSC2010. Interesting lectures. Strict with deadlines and plagiarism. She offers extra credit at the end that helped my grade.
This class is way more work than it is ever worth. There are sometimes up to 18 assignments a week. Not hard, just stupid. Written assignments take forever to grade (6+ weeks) and points are taken off for the most ridiculous things (including questions in the submission documents, minor/one-off spelling errors, etc.). No communication.
DO NOT TAKE BSC2005 WITH THIS PROF! Taking this Summer 2022, and by God am I fed up with the workload. Often 15 assignments a week, grading is really harsh, and absolutely no time awareness. Teachers and TAs do not respond to emails and take weeks to grade assignments (6+ weeks and waiting on one of mine). Just pure busy work. Stay away!
The most aggravating class I have taken at UF, the teacher gives a ridiculous amount of work it is all busy work that takes an infinite amount of time and does not teach you anything useful. Be ready to spend dozens of hours on this course, genuinely have never taken a class that has made me this angry. Wish I could write more.
waste of my time, up to 20 assignments in one week, take this class if you want to hate your life.
Excessive amount of work, minimum 10 assignments per week. Mostly busy work and long readings and lectures. Even by the second week nothing was being learned and was just trying to complete the assignments by their due date. Every lecture quiz is proctored. and this was only an intro class.
Professor's online content and quizzes were very pedantic and unrelated to the subject material. One such example included a multiple choice question as to which blouse she was wearing during her lecture.
Do not take. This is the worst class. There are around 7-12 lectures to watch with questions that count for your grade due every Wednesday then usually 2-3 writing assignments due Friday. Exams are impossible because the lectures have nothing to do with what's on the exam. The assignments are graded super hard and are usually very difficult.
Annoying class but not that hard because the subject matter is generally easy. However, there were a few units where things got harder and were not explained all that well. But if you read the textbook and study, it's really not that bad. Lots of guest lecturers. Prof will curve exams if enough ppl miss something which is nice. Communicates well.
Not very great with communication and didn't prepare us enough for the exams. The exams were nothing like the content given to us and majority didn't do well.
Professor is clearly passionate and tries to make class interesting. Attendance is absolutely mandatory if at all possible - there is so much content that missing a day will set you back massively. Lab quizzes and exams are hard. Class is more than doable if you study, take thorough notes, and stay on top of assignments, but definitely not easy.
Love animals? This class is for you! Exams were fair and lectures were straightforward. Curves exams and offers extra credit. DO NOT procrastinate. Answer the learning goals as you go. Material was easier to learn than ZOO3713, but had more assignments and busy work. I recommend using an iPad for note-taking and downloading the PPTs before class.
She assigns work as if she's your only class. She gives more work than all my other classes combined, and half of them aren't anything simple you can get done in 30 minutes. I recommend taking BSC2010 from any other teacher. She's literally ridiculous and doesn't have a sense of reality; it's almost as if she's never been a student.
Do NOT take this class!! It is so much work just for a gen ed credit. The material is easy but the exams do not line up with what is taught/the study guides. It is very time consuming and all of the assignments are mostly busy work.
Definitely Don't recommend taking unless it's your only option. There are about ten plus assignments each week due on Wednesday. Each week there's a writing assignment and honestly they just take up too much time. Class will take up the majority of your time.
Worst class I have taken yet. Exams do not match content whatsoever. High school craft assignments that take hours and teach you nothing. Not to mention 15 other related assignments due weekly. You are not able to see right and wrong answers. Asks questions that are unrelated to anything in the course. Avoid at all costs.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I did horribly. This class is the worst class I have taken. It has literally taken over my life. The work is insane, and the exams are really hard! This class has taken a huge toll on my mental health. If you NEED to take this class, be prepared for it to become your life. Take BSC2010 with another professor; I wish I did.
This class made me angry. The material is easy, but Dr. Gerlach seems to think this is the only class her students are taking and assigns them ridiculous amounts of work for easy topics. I spent so much time on this class for no reason. A gen ed that is specifically for non-majors should take this much time or effort. Stay away if you can.
Wow was this class way harder than BSC2011 (the normal bio most students take). All my friends ended up with As in BSC2011 while I got a B due to ridiculously harshly graded writing assignments and labs. This class is all busywork with 7-13 assignments per week.
This class is absolutely ridiculous. The amount of homework assigned to you is insane each week (10-15 assignments per week). With these assignments too, you learn absolutely nothing. This class is so much work for no reason, ESPECIALLY for NON MAJORS!!! AVOID!!
I didn't think the class was that bad as many people described. It is harder than you would think for being a non-majors bio class, however, the biggest complaint for this class was that it was time consuming. I am not a genius at all (I had to drop gen chem 1 and premed in general for reference) and I managed to get an A-. Also READ the book!!
Basically, this is terrible. The feedback is very strict and rude, no compassion. Makes me feel like I know nothing. She is a very harsh grader and believes I have all the time in the world to learn her material, newsflash, I don't! Educators are not supposed to behave like this. The attitude towards the feedback is discouraging. I can't take this.
Got an A but it required alot of assignments a week. We went through biology all over and it was not terrible just lots of assignments. Work ahead youll be fine.
Vertebrate Biodiversity is my favorite class I've taken at UF so far. Dr. Gerlach is such a great lecturer, and the material is interesting. Textbook is useless so her lectures are the only thing you're tested on- do not skip class. Lab quizzes are hard but doable. I highly encourage group studying before exams. Take this class if you can!
Exams were tough. Lots of material and homework.
STAY AWAY!! This professor prides herself on accusing students of cheating, when her tests are plagiarized from other professors. Get ready for 15+ assignments per week and her feedback is so rude. Her condescending tone made me never want to attend office hours. Worst professor at UF.
This class was unnecessarily difficult. There were multiple assignments due each week and graded harshly. In addition to the insane workload, the exams were nothing like what we learned in the lectures or what was in the textbook. In addition, Professor Gerlach was slow at responding to emails and also was not helpful during office hours.
Do not take this class, it will take up most of your time! Trust me.
This class is unfairly difficult. Professor Gerlach does not reply to my emails and there is so much busy work. This class is way too much if you're taking it as a non-major. Exams are very difficult, this is one of the most frustrating classes I've had. I could go on and on about reasons not to take this class.
Of all the bio profs I've had, Gerlach had the most structure and stability. Expectations are clear, exam is fair, she gives multiple resources to help you out and her LECTURES ARE ACTUALLY HELPFUL! Go to class, she is very knowledgeable and well prepared/ paces her lectures. She does give after class LC questions but everything else is reasonable.
I previously rated Dr. Gerlach for her online section for BSC2005, which was a nightmare. This class, however, was fantastically taught. Dr. Gerlach was organized, knowledgeable, and helpful. The exam was difficult, but unlike Dr. Douglas for Plants (horrible), she gave us more than enough resources. I guess it depends on the course with her!
The only good thing about this class was that the lectures are actually helpful. But just watching lectures for one week takes about four hours, not to mention another couple of hours for homework. Even if you spend all your time on these assignments, she takes off points from homework for ridiculous things.
This class has SO many weekly assignments, and writing assignments were incredibly tedious. A handful of them require extra materials, which is unnecessary and annoying. The lectures were great and informative, but the exams were MUCH harder than they should've been. Dr. Gerlach is impossible to reach and is a stupidly tough grader. Avoid!
Avoid. The course content isn't very difficult, but the assignments are excessive. The experiments (requiring random household objects)/arts and crafts assignments take up so much time while providing minimal benefits. I spent more time on this course than all my others just for a gen-ed credit, there's no reason to take it if you don't have to.
Professor Gerlach's class is challenging, with a heavy workload and strict grading. However, using Unstuck ai and other study aids can help manage the demands. If you're willing to put in the effort, the material is valuable.
Trust the RMP ratings because no one is lying. The course load is heavy for a gen ed course, the exams sometimes feel impossible to pass. This is the most time-consuming class I've taken, with an average of 7 assignments due a week. The writing assignments are very time-consuming and sometimes really difficult, and she is a harsh grader on them.
This class honestly felt like a huge waste of time. There are so many assignments every week; they weren't necessarily hard, but they didn't help me learn, they just felt like busy work. The tests were very specific and often included topics she didn't go over. The textbook was the only thing that was somewhat helpful.
Honestly this class felt like a huge waste of time. There were so many assignments every week that just felt like busy work and didn't help me learn. The exam questions were specific and sometimes included topics she didn't go over. The textbook was the only thing that was somewhat helpful. This class was way too much work for a non-major credit.
Last week of class and she just finished grading assignments from the first week. Does not prepare you for the material that will be on tests.
This was my first Zoology course so I'm not sure if it was user error, but the tests were hard. I wasn't used to a short-answer format for such limited class time. She was really kind though and I would go to her office hours all the time. Many homework assignments, but she really is a nice person.
Dr. Gerlach refuses to round any grades. If you have a 92.9 she will not round to a 93. She does not prepare students for each exam, and her course is too time consuming for "non-majors." She also does not show exams after they are graded, so there is no way to know if she actually graded the exams correctly. Do not take this class.
The worse class and teacher. THE WORSE! Dont take!!!
So awful. All these reviews say exactly how she was and how the course is. So much work that was so time consuming. You are not prepared at all for any of the exams which is shocking for the abundance of assignments you have weekly. It is hard to retain any of the information because you're just completing the work to get it done, worst class.
This was one of the worst experiences I have had with a professor. The abundance of work in no way prepares you for the tests. She is very cold and takes this course way too seriously. I took this as a way to get my bio credit thinking it would be manageable, especially because it is meant for non-majors. Do not take this class if you don't have to
I honestly don't know why her rating is so low. Dr.Gerlach was an amazing professor. Her slides are very limited in terms of information, so I recommend recording lectures. Her exam was very fair in terms of the content. Idk by score yet but I didn't use Smokin' notes and I feel pretty confident.
Solid lectures, but makes you do a "wrap up" assignment after each one. Doesn't hurt your grade since the iClicker category is easy to get a 100% in, but it's annoying to do. As a person, she's funny and chill, though. Her Animals exam was harder than Douglas's Plants exam, imo.
An endless amount of work just to not be prepared for any of the exams and to not really learn much from the work given. Most of the grading was affected by the exams, which I did not feel I was prepared for at all. The work besides the exams werent difficult, but were graded harshly despite that.
Favorite class I've taken at UF but lots of work. Lab quizzes are by far the most difficult part of the class but the labs themselves are interesting and never actually take the full 3 hours. Prof Gerlach is very passionate about what she teaches which makes the lectures more engaging. If you're passionate about animals you will enjoy this class :)
