Her tests are VERY challenging, probably because they are very wordy and leave too much room for questions. Her pop quiz q+a's are from the book. A very sweet person, but has poor clarity when lecturing; only referencing to what was read in the text. 1 midterm 1 final, 1 paper and 6 pop quizzes. A lot of unhappy students. Tests are weighted most.
Pop quizzes were confusing and hard to get right even if you knew the material, she picks these tiny details from the book. Exams are hard, students know the material but cannot seem to show it on those tricky tests. No curve + no extra credit (despite several requests from students during lecture) = thumbs down.
Hard for no reason. She expects you to literally memorize the book. Questions on tests are tricky. She does not contribute much new information to lecture, everything is straight from the book. Boring lectures. Requires to MEMORIZE silly amounts of info, all multiple choice, pop quizzes, no curve, no extra credit.
If you have the option to take this class with another professor, then do not take this class with her. I wish I had listened to the comments on this site. She is not a clear lecturer and the tests are difficult (probably because you learn nothing from her and everything from the book). She is a really nice person though, but not cut out to teach.
Took this class over the summer, I thought her videos were really interesting. The cons were the tests, questions were worded weirdly and tricky. Also, she didn't post the slides. The project is a grade booster. I wish I could have read the book also because I didn't learn from her as much as I would have liked.
I had her for both 100A and B over the summer. She seems really nice and I even went to office hours for help, but she does not know how to articulate her points. You rely on the book to learn. She expects you to know a lot of details, but you dont know what details until after the test. She is not clear.
I really think this class would have been ok if she was a good lecturer. I heard that other HDE100A professors were hard/tricky on tests too, but they are amazing lecturers. Solely relying on the book is brutal and unfair. Take this class with someone else. Otherwise you'll regret it, I know I do. Didn't learn a thing from her.
She doesn't know how to communicate. Three midterms and a final. One research paper (which is fun if you have a good partner). Class is pretty boring and you learn everything from the book.
100B was a lot better than 100A. I think she needs to work on her lecturing style since she is not that great at stressing what are the most important things to learn and she is boring. The papers were ok. Office hours were not helpful to me.
The class is not hard. People, stop being lazy. Do the readings, pay attention, and you'll be fine. Don't automatically assume she's a bad teacher because 'everyone' says so. I really enjoyed her class. Do the readings, though. Seriously.
I LOVE Dr. Hollis. She is the sweetest teacher ever. She's super approachable and answers all your questions. Go to class, takes notes and listen and you'll be fine. I had her for the whole 100 series and she was awesome. I don't understand why she doesn't have higher reviews. I'd take her for all my HDE classes if I could!
Getting an A is VERY difficult - not impossible, though. There is a lot of material to memorize and you learn mostly from the book. She is a guest lecturer and is new to teaching. She needs to work on her lecture style and clarity. Avoid if possible.
had her for 103 too. she's a sweet one, but she's a poor lecturer and made hde classes incredibly painful for me. she doesn't teach but only goes over topics in a BROAD sense. my advice: read the book. kudos for being nice and approachable.. but she's not helpful. if anything, she really does make things hard for no reason.
I thought she was a great lecturer. I was tricked because she never lectures to the meat of the material! The meat is what she tests us on too! She's NOT a good instructor. I get the vibe that she doesn't want us to succeed! Got a decent grade by reading!
I only like her because she reminds me of Vivian from Out of the Box, except that Vivian is helpful. Woo is a nice lady, but her lecturing is incomplete. She does go over topics but provides so much extraneous information we don't get tested on and that's irritating. Read the book because that's where you'll find the missing chunks of her lectures.
She doesn't know how to teach, and most of her question on the test comes from no where. You read the book to barely get a C.
Dr. Hollis is a very easy going woman. I honestly don't know why people rated her so poorly. But if you attend lecture, it's a great precursor for the reading. So just read the text book (which isn't that hard) but if you read the book then you'll ace the test. (Most of the questions come from the book.)
Dr. Hollis is great. She fields questions well and has engaging lectures. However, you must attend class if you expect to do well because tests are from Lec and book. Do the work and you won't have a problem. Great instructor! I would definitely take another class from her.
My favorite professor! She's compassionate and wants to help her students succeed. She's VERY encouraging during class, and never makes you feel like your contribution was dumb. She likes class participation. In terms of the class, you can just attend class and not read and you'll probably pass, but I read and attended class and got an A.
I don't know why people rate her low. She is one of the teachers that tries to accommodate everyone. Her tests are fair as long as people go to lectures and read the textbooks. Lectures are filled with varieties of videos and powerpoint slides, but you must pay attention to what she says since her slides does not have detailed information.
She made the class unnecessarily difficult. She is very unclear in lecture. She will focus on a topic in class and test on random and very specific material from the book. Avoid if possible.
She seems very nice, but does not know how to answer questions. Study the book a lot! The tests are very difficult if you do not read. I learned a lot from the book. I do not think her lecture style is compatible with my learning style...
She's very nice and is obviously concerned with students' success. She is very clear upfront that half of the test material comes from lectures and half comes from the textbook. If you don't do well on the tests, it's your own fault. Do the reading, come to class, and it's an easy A.
She reads directly from the slides and doesn't answer students' questions in or outside of class. I feel like I wasted my time and money. I learned everything from the book. The paper is easy but her tests are ridiculously specific and poorly worded.
Overall, she is a great professor. She bases her lectures off of the textbook and tests us base off of it. She is clear in her lectures and has us watch interesting videos about correlated topics. I see that many have written bad reviews of her, but personally I enjoyed her class.
She is very nice and approachable; however, I could not get a clear answer from her in lecture or outside of class. I felt that I learned everything from the book.
Hollis is very nice and I found her lectures to be very clear but kind of boring. The challenging part of her class was the tests. Overall, it is a doable class but did require some work.
Nice and knowledgeable teacher
I am a straight A student until I take her class. She is extremely boring and ineffective in her teaching style. She's very robotic. It was really hard to follow her lecture b/c of her teaching style. I would never take her class again,
It's sad to see all the negative comments about Professor Hollis (don't know why the Woo is added on because she didn't mention that being part of her name?). Tests are difficult only if you don't do all of the readings and attend lecture. Otherwise, she is very helpful & the class is very interesting. I really enjoyed having her :)
She was a great instructor. I took her class over the summer. We had a few tests and a paper. You could tell that she was really interested in the subject and knew a lot about it. She's very sweet and willing to help or talk after class.
I LOVE PROFESSOR HOLLIS! She respects her student's ideas and values their opinions. I was not afraid to speak out in class and loved coming to lectures. In addition, she has such a good heart. During the time I was taking this class, I got my laptop and books stolen from my car. Prof. Hollis went out of her way to help me find a book.
I learned from the book not her. She does not know how to teach students or grade appropriately. Luckily the book is interesting and the topic is. Wish I took this class with someone else.
Nice person, speaks really clearly during her lectures. But she reads off her lecture slides--making her seem like she doesnt know the material herself. She also doesnt have enough lecture material to cover during the 2hrs, so she tries to speak slowly and extend the class time by making long pauses. If you email her, she reponds and is helpful. :/
She's super sweet! Her exams are very clear, not tricky at all. DO THE READING, because questions on the exam has material from the book! Very nice, very willing to help. Super straightforward.
Professor Hollis is a very sweet lady. Although, her knowledge in the subject seemed to be lacking. She answered questions to her ability, which I appreciate, but I feel a professor should know a bit more about the subject. She did not go into much depth, and it also seemed that we were being taught from her slides/notes.
Professor Hollis ruined a class a couldn't wait to take. Her lectures are dull and she almost always does not know the answers to students' questions even though she is supposedly an expert in the subject. Doesn't put all of the necessary info in her lecture slides so reading the text is necessary for her unnecessarily difficult tests.
I took Professor Hollis for HDE 100C in the fall and she was a great professor. Her slides had all the information you needed and her tests were easy. I took her 100A class in winder and the slides had almost no information on it just useless pictures of babies and her tests were ridiculously specific. She's a nice lady but too tough for no reason.
I don't know why I even bothered to go to class, when I learned more from the textbook. Her lectures are long, especially when she welcomes discussion. She often has to repeat herself many times, which could be avoided if her slides were better. She shows videos; but they are too long and have a lot of info. and its hard to take notes.
Professor Hollis is nice and helpful, but I didn't like her lecture style. She had to repeat herself often because she gave us a lot of detailed info without putting much info on the slides. Same with the videos, too long and too much info. So it was hard to take notes. The paper was easy though.
She wasn't a great professor, but she wasn't bad either. There's a 30% paper that's very straightforward, just follow the rubric. Her tests are 50% from lecture and 50% from the textbook. Just read and go to class and you will do fine. I didn't want to take her at first because of all the bad reviews, but she honestly wasn't that bad.
Not the best professor, but she is incredibly nice (seriously) & always encourages questions. Lectures felt really slow. Her slides don't have a lot of info which is annoying. There's a lot of material to study, especially for the final, but her test questions are very straightforward (if exams were open note, you should get 95%). Paper was easy.
TERRIBLE teacher, dull lecturer. The slides lacked helpful information for studying and she required a textbook for only 15 test questions. She never talked about any existing research but constantly referred to her experience with her grandma, presented too many "statistics" with no citations/grounding, and took WEEKS to get grades back.
If I had 2 hours to live I would spend them in this class bc it feels like an eternity. The material isn't difficult, I actually find the subject interesting but somehow I managed to forget about that with her 2 hour straight ppts in black and white which she read, word for word, everyday. Took a month to get our tests back. Truly painful.
Horrible, Horrible. Avoid if you can!! Subject is interesting but her monotonous voice makes you want to go to sleep. Her Powerpoint slides are literally bullet points, so you must go to class in order to get the full information. She took literally a month to give back exam grades. Tests are really tricky ( a, b, a&b, none of the above).
She's such a sweet person that I feel bad for hating her as a professor. Super boring. Makes fairly interesting material unbearable. Makes 2 hours feels like 10. Lecture slides are minimal and incomplete so you MUST take notes on every detail to do well. Gives no resources to help students. Took over a month to get midterm scores back.
Really frustrating professor. Very sweet woman, likes to connect to the students and encourages discussion, but she makes the class unnecessarily challenging. Empty promises about when midterm scores will be released or study guides. Her lectures don't coincide with the textbook but she expects familiarity in both. Unfair exam/study expectations.
Hollis is a nice professor but her lectures feel like they never end, she's also really monotone, which doesn't help. The book is more useful than the lecture slides. She also takes forever to give back grades, she doesn't stick to her words and it gets really frustrating. I would never take her class again.
Professor Hollis is a great teacher who is passionate about her subject and very friendly. The tests are hard only if you haven't read the textbook. It's a lot of reading, but the textbook itself is easy to understand and explains concepts clearly. Ask questions, study the slides, do the reading and you'll be fine.
Hollis is a decent professor who has some enthusiasm for her topic and is mostly clear on her topics. You should definitely go to lecture bc she elaborates on things not on the slides. Textbook reading required. Her lectures are long and can get dense, but if you study in advance you should be okay. Paper is really easy as long as you answer all ?s
Professor Hollis is an incredibly nice person and definitely cares about her students. That being said, her lectures are very boring (like falling asleep boring) and she tends to read off the slides. Her office hours were hard to get to because she would change them last minute. She took ages to hand stuff back. Class wasn't too hard, just dull.
She was ALWAYS late to class. She gave lots of readings in the book, most of which are unrelated to her lectures (some exam q's are from the book so you have to read it). You have to go to lecture because her slides are just pictures and keywords. Her exams are extremely difficult and she isn't willing to discuss why an answer could be right.
You definitely need to attend lecture and take notes on exactly what she is saying. She slows down and repeats so that you can catch it but focus more on what she repeats because it WILL come up on an exam. Her exams were straightforward if you go to class however this session she was late/absent a lot. She was quick to answer questions in email.
Dr. Hollis is very sweet and very approachable. But her tests are very specific to her lectures but also the book. In order to do well on her tests you have to know her lectures very well as well as the textbook very well. A lot of the times she will not lecture on what is in the book so its up to you to teach it to yourself, it can be on the test.
Dr. Hollis is a very nice professor and you can tell that she enjoys what she does, but the class is a mess. She doesn't upload things she says she will. She extended one of the parts of our paper in order to give us feedback on the first part to improve our writing, and she never even graded the first part before the extended second part was due.
Hollis is a super nice person but her lectures are long, boring, and dry. She often has technical difficulties and may make you watch multiple videos (up to an hour long each!) outside of class. Her teaching style is almost all auditory so her powerpoints have barely any information. Oh, and the book has lots of reading to do, takes hours.
she is literally 10 minutes late every lecture. She's super duper sweet and nice, but that doesn't really makeup for her rough lectures and exams. It's as though she lectures off a script and once she moves away from it she gets lost. She can never answer questions in lecture and usually just responds with "great question! I'll get back to it."
Odds are if you're taking 100A-C, you'll have to take Hollis. Very unorganized and will not stick to things she says she'll do like posting videos, sticking to the syllabus, or even showing up to class. That being said, write down everything she says and study that. For papers, go to OH and ask them specifically what they want you to write.
Hollis isn't easy but I had her for both 100A & C and she is one of the most caring professors. True, she's late to lecture & office hours, sometimes cancels class, & is not the best at responding to emails; however, she teaches at Sac State also so it's understandable. Go to office hours and she'll do all she can to help. Study the lecture slides.
Utterly unprepared consistently, rude in interacting with students, has no passion for the material, and lectures in a dry and boring way. Also seems unable to communicate basic facts at times. One of the worst professors I have had.
I should have heeded the warnings. We have multiple papers due, but she will not elaborate on them in class at all. Her lectures are extremely hard to sit through, and her slides have nothing on them. It's unfortunate that this was my first class for my HDE major, and i would recommend taking it with another professor if you're interested in HDE.
She is the sweetest person, but is extremely unorganized. We had to buy clickers in order to do clicker questions (can't use the app) then her base wouldn't work so we have never used them and it is our last week of class. She does not elaborate on what she expects from her assignments/tests. Lectures are heavy and only get 2-3 minute breaks.
Her instructions for the paper were horrendous, so everyone would get marked down because she never told us to include something she wanted. The multiple choice tests were so far-off her highlighted material that I suspect they are stock tests (all three include content we hadn't covered yet, she just kept saying "oops.") Avoid at ALL costs.
She is nice, but like other people have said she isn't very organized and doesn't respond to her emails on time if at all. However, her tests were fair. If you do the reading and attend lectures the tests are doable. That being said, there is a lot of reading. She also tested us on hour long videos which we had to watch on our own time.
she is a mess! First, she cancels lecture AFTER lecture has started not showing up at all. Second, she does not reply to emails until after like 2 weeks. Doesn't upload slides prior to class, made it very difficult to keep up with her. Unfortunately I have 2 more of the 100 series classes to take and hopefully I dont end up in her class ever again.
I wouldn't mind her messy class structure, terrible paper instructions/expectations, and terribly worded/structured exams if she wasn't such a condescending person.
She is a super nice professor who is always willing to ask questions. Keep up with the reading and lectures, and youll do fine on the midterms. Go to office hours for writing assignments and get clarification if confused. Final is a bit harder than the midterms.
Dr. Hollis is very sweet. Her lectures are not fantastic -- she often makes mistakes or gets confused. However, she's very approachable and kind, and her exams are genuinely EASY. Class avg for every exam was like 85. No joke. An A is very possible. Plan on 3-10 hours for each hw set though, and 2-5 for each lab assignment.
Although I wanted to enjoy this class, it was hard to get over the disorganization of her expectations. She had to change the lecture schedule at least 3 times so it was hard to grasp what would actually be required for the exams. The 6-page paper was also very confusing. However, she is a very sweet lady and is always willing to help!
1. takes forever to update grades 2. high expectations for paper, grading criteria is confusing 3. exams short answer (only answer 1 from 2) + 20-30 mc 4. super sweet but that doesnt make up for lack of disorganization 5. learned interesting things so if her class doesnt appeal to you from the beginning its not worth taking it
I was definitely excited for this class, but Prof Hollis wasn't very clear on her expectations. The guidelines for the paper she assigned were confusing and the rubric was not helpful. Her tests were doable, pretty standard for a psychology class.
I maintained a high grade in this class until the paper was graded since the expectations were not clearly outlined. I really liked the class throughout the quarter, but the professor made the paper criteria unnecessarily confusing. She presented the paper like it would be easy points and then when it was returned, I found it was graded harshly.
the prof is super unorganized, class is 3 hours of work a week, she easily gives out 10+, with a discord of around 200 students in the class, everyone complains how bad she is. Lecture is useless, its an hour long and she spends more than half talking about nothing useful or productive. Class structure is all over the place and will not compromise
Too much work for a 4 unit class. Heres what we have to do weekly: 2 chs (30 pages each), Live lectures, recorded lectures + videos, Learning curve quizzes (2 per ch, so 4 per week), lecture quiz (1), and discussion (depends on her). And 3 exams overall. She does not answer our questions even though we ask multiple times. Super unorganized.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. DROP THE CLASS IF YOU HAVE TOO. This lecturer does not care about her students at all! She will ignore all emails sent. She won't listen to any concerns and will just say "tough luck" and to "deal with it". Students have addressed concerns and she ignored every single one. She assigns way too many assignments. You will drown
One of the worse professors I have ever had. She doesn't care about her students. Students post questions and she only responds with "good question" and never answers it. She assigns way too much work for the amount of units the class is, and does not care about the opinions of students. She pretends to and then does nothing and doesn't hear us out
This class is so disorganized, the expectations aren't clear, and the assignments are brutally confusing. Good luck with having the professor respond to your emails and getting decent grades on exams. This class should not be as hard as Professor Hollis is making it. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
I am currently taking PSC 140 rn during COVID. I believe her class is information dense and there is definitely a lot of work. However, if you keep track of all your assignments, do the readings, and pay attention within lecture, you will do just fine. She is super caring! I recommend going to her OH to clarify something. I personally loved it.
Pros: She's really sweet, lectures are good. Cons: TONS of different things in the gradebook that it's hard to keep track. Getting into the flow of the class was hard at first. LOTS of reading. half her lectures are synchronous, half is asynchronous. Doesn't respond to emails in a timely manner. tricky exam Q's Only take if you're SUPER organized.
Shes a very sweet proefessor, tries really hard to make the lectures enjoyable even if its via zoom. But class is poorly structured and this was one of the most heaviest courses i've taken. Alot of reading, a lot of quizzes and assignments. Definitely do-able with hard work but its a tough class.
She is a very sweat professor, Very caring and warm hearted. It is true you have to read a fair amount of materials each week, but as long as you really focus on the work she assigned you will be fine. The test can sometime be confusing a little bit but it is open notes and you can go through your notes every time you wanted. Overall a good prof.
Professor Hollis is really sweet. However, her exams can be a bit difficult and she takes a long time to answer to emails. There are 3 exams. 2 chapters per week + learning curves you have to complete for those chapters. 1 weekly lecture quiz. Weekly participation assignments. Also you have to attend 90% of lectures
Hollis's biggest problem was that she was not familiar with the online system. This led to a lot of confusion regarding grades and technical difficulties. However, she allows you to use notes and textbooks during quizzes and exams. Also, her test questions were mostly direct quotes from lectures or textbooks. This makes her class extremely easy.
She is confusing and she gives out tooooo much homework. She gets confused sometimes around the canvas site. Just stay away form her. Awful professor.
Please do yourself a favor and do not take this professor unless you 100 percent have no other choice. They seem like a very very nice person, but are a very mediocre lecturer. They are super bland in their lectures and the exams do not even align well with them. PLEASE LOOK ELSEWHERE.
This course isn't a class that is looked forward to. Prof. Hollis did a decent job with the course material considering that this is HDE120. Lecture was pretty much useless; most of her examples are from the textbook. Labs are 60% of grade, 40% are exams. Midterm was doable. Final consisted of 9 chapters from the textbook, WAYYY too much.
Dr. Hollis seems like a nice person, but as a professor she lacks communication with her TAs and students. Took her SS1 and the grades were inputed later than she promised. All students were extremely frustrated with her lack of communication and transparency. She also had absolutely no idea as to what happens in lab and gives no direction.
dont recommend
She is an amazing professor! The class consisted of 3 midterms (online), a three-part paper, and quizzes that are open-note and online. Very accommodating and will change things around if she sees that it can affect the class negatively. The lecture is mandatory, if you need a recording you must explain why you need the recording.
So sweet and accessible outside of class. 3 midterms non-cumulative. One big paper but separated into parts to make it easier and 5 quizzes open note 2 retakes allowed. Accessible through the TA strike and changed some assignments around to make things easier on us. Overall, super sweet very passionate about the subject and easy to follow along
Dr. Hollis is really not as bad as other reviews make her seem. I have taken her HDE 100C course and now her HDE 120. HDE 120 with Hollis is primarily graded on the lab work (60%) that the T.A is responsible for grading. Her tests are a bit difficult, but manageable if you study from the textbook/study guide and she curves.
Attendance isn't technically mandatory, but slides have almost no info and she only offers recordings if you have a documented reason for missing class. Overall, Her tests are hard but fair. Nobody got 100% on any of the exams, but as long as you study your lecture notes you will for sure get an A-, if you want a higher grade read the textbook.
Honestly taking this class was a mistake. I believe she wants to be a nice professor by answering questions and being very active but her tests don't make a lot of sense. I believe if there is another option for a better professor you should take that instead. I've had her twice and I have concluded that she is the reason people hate college.
Long lectures that are complicated. Wish I could do more than rely on this website to inform people to not take her. First time rating a professor because of how bad she was. Both 100C and research methods are tough classes but her and the TAs make it even harder. If you are having doubts about completing your degree, do NOT TAKE HER! she nice tho.
I was really scared to take this class because of all of the bad ratings, but she is truly a really nice, caring, and understanding professor. there's a really generous curve. you get free points from participation assignments and the papers assigned are really easy. Attendance is technically not mandatory, but I would recommend going.
She's very sweet but not the most effective. Slides are abbreviated and she randomly has videos to watch. Never explained our papers or participation assignments but the TAs were easy graders. Exams are closed notes and were intentionally tricky. Study guide was not helpful at all. If I didn't need this class, I wouldn't have taken it with her.
Despite the reviews, she is a very caring and accommodating professor, who is passionate about the welfare of her students. Her tests rely heavily on the textbook, and sometimes contain very small details from seemingly insignificant passages. This class requires a lot of effort, but is ultimately pretty manageable. She may be absent a few times.
The class is challenging, but the professor is very kind and accommodating. The lectures can be dry, but attendance is important. unstuck ai was a helpful study tool for the tricky exams.
If it's taught by someone better, go for that.
Dr. Hollis is so caring and so nice, but isn't the best lecturer. Her slides have barely any information, and her exams are quite hard. She cares about her students a lot and will change deadlines based on the situation. I really like her, and would take her again, but wouldn't recommend if you rely heavily on slides.
Hollis is extremely nice, but not a very great lecturer. She consistently has to push deadlines back, so much so that she had us do a paper, quiz, and exam all in the same week for just this class. The exams have difficult questions about very minor parts of readings. You'll get through it if you have to take her, but take someone else if you can.
She was decent, nothing stands out about her. Watch the lectures THOROUGHLY and you'll do good on the exam. She expects us to make our own study guide which is dumb. Exams are MC and no attendance. She has a paper broken up into two parts. Point system out of 1000 total. She talks for way too long and super sloooooow so watch lec vids in 2x speed.
Run as far away as possible. Take another professor if you want to keep your sanity.
This may actually be the most unorganized class I have ever taken. Hollis seems nice, but she is difficult to get a hold of outside of class AND it is hard to understand assignment expectations. Exams have extremely specific questions from lectures and readings. She also locked grades and input scores the night of grading deadline. I would avoid!
Bro like to send people into SJA. Plz keep your editing history!!!!! Be careful when taking her classes!!!!!
Would highly NOT recommend. Unfortunately she consistently teach a required class for HDE, but I would rather take HDE 110 in heartbeat if it means never taking her again. She's extremely strict on grading especially with plagiarism and cheating she will send you to OSSJA without fail and she's more than willing to fail students on this.
I found the way my grade along with other students were handled in this professor's class deeply disappointing. She showed little empathy or support and came across as extremely strict and inflexible. I would strongly advise others to avoid taking her class if possible. I could NEVER forgive her for how my final grade was handled.
If you want to graduate from UC Davis with a degree, completely avoid this professor.
You may have noticed a trend here... don't make my mistake and ignore it or give her the benefit of the doubt. Consistently late to class, talks super monotonously and slow. Was incredibly hard to reach outside of class and terrible with communication. Take literally any other HDE professor!
Lectures are incredibly boring and often do not reflect what is on the exams. Poor communication skills but is nice and encourages questions in class. Reported over 40 students to ossja for minimal/no reason at all, even ossja officers were fed up with how long she takes to respond. Overall not a great professor and would encourage avoiding.
DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR
Reported many members of the class to OSSJA for AI use with minimal evidence, she clearly didn't read the papers. In response to this she is not letting students who were flagged for AI participate in an extra credit assignment that would be 18% of the grade. This is discrimination. She should be fired from the university for this. Don't take her.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Believe the other reviews when they say she sends people to OSSJA for no reason. She flags so many people for no reason and does not respond. You literally cannot win with her, so don't take your chance and don't risk your degree over this professor. Go for anybody else who's teaching or wait for another professor.
Horrible professor. Very unfair. Please save yourself and your grade and stay away from this professor.
I overlooked the other ratings because I thought for sure I would never be given AI allegations since I write my own papers. This professor does not even read the papers she flags. It is so stupid of me to have high hopes for a UC Davis professor to actually do her job properly. I should have known better. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR!
Genuinely, what is wrong with this professor? She has flagged half the class for plagiarism and is not allowing them to participate in the EC activities, which is 180 points. This professor should not be allowed to teach.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Professor Hollis has REPORTED HALF THE CLASS ON AI USE, and her lecture slides have no information, so you have to write your own notes. Her tests are not terrible, but she does not respond to emails promptly. I thought I would be fine taking this class, but I was wrong. She IS a HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. DO NOT TAKE HER.
She is not a good professor, do not take her bro. Got reported for AI, didn't even use it. She should be fired. I hope she does not have tenure. Does not give some students the EC opportunity, which is a lot of points, because she's punishing people for something they did not do. Please do not take her and bring up your concerns with an advisor.
During midterm three, my led pencil broke, i raised my hand, she ignored me, i signaled that my pencil was broken, she ignored me again. I finished the midterm by using a single piece of led. This professor is awful. DO NOT TAKE HER. Her lectures have nothing to do with the midterm.
I never wore my seatbelt to class because I DREADED it. This course was chaotic and way harder to manage than it should've been. I was falsely flagged for AI, even with screen recordings and timestamps, and the case has dragged on for over a month. I felt like I was walking on eggshells the rest of the qtr!! PLEASE wait for another professor.
She takes AGES to grade any work you turn in and each assignment graded can be the difference between an A or C. She also isnt very communicative, she gives almost no warning to changes in the schedule including REPLACING THE 2ND PAPER WITH TWO IN-PERSON WRITING EXAMS THE WEEK BEFORE (AND OF) THANKSGIVING!! ONE DAY HEADS UP!! 90 points of EC.
I actually have no words that could truly capture how awful my experience was in this class. Changing the syllabus in week 8?! Like are you kidding me? Referring over 50 students to OSSJA?! I was thankfully not one of the unlucky students but she is just so bad please save yourself the stress of having to deal with her awfulness.
AWFUL! Reported a bunch of people to OSSJA, changed the syllabus more than halfway through the quarter, and took forever to grade assignments... a mess.
Literally CRIMINAL that she is the only one who teaches this class. Lectures are boring, better off just reading the textbook (make sure you do practice quizzes at the end of the chapter because she will literally just plagiarize questions from them). changed syllabus week 8, and then reports ppl for ai for no reason. she should be fired.
her rate my professor rating is generous; she should have a 0. causes so much stress for students with sending ppl to OSSJA; like pls get a life. dont listen to the good reviews, it really is as bad as it seems. she should lose her job idk how she is still teaching here.
I had a dreadful experience in this class, and she made it worse. I believe that people who rate her 4 or 5 don't see her true colors, and she is slow to respond, which doesn't give the impression that she genuinely cares about her students. She has an unprofessional teaching style and attitude towards the students, and doesn't fight for us
i had read all these reviews before taking this class (no choice since she's the only professor) and was confident i wouldn't be sent to sja because i don't use ai. anyways i have a meeting with them the day before christmas. incredibly boring lecturer, questionable use of slides (almost all pictures), and rude attitude. tomatoes
3 midterms with extra credit opportunities after each. Extra credit assignments for discussion posts AND quizzes. Overall A LOT of extra credit oppportuntities were given for nearly every assignment. The class really is not that bad as long as you use the textbook. The essay is split into parts and honestly super short. 3 mids + final, 1 drops.
be warned; its BAD. pretty sure the two 5 star reviews before this are written by the prof herself, cause aint no way a student is saying nice things abt her.
one of the nicest professors I have ever had. lots of extra credit and room in order for people to pass. She made in person writing assignments for credit which were very easy. her policy on ai is very lenient. She was honestly an amazing professor, I would fully recommend her!
Don't listen to the 5-star rating for HDE 100C because I'm pretty sure it's someone or something trying to sway the truth. The teacher is way worse than you think, and her teaching style is off, and she is late to class and didnt even show up on day one of class
I normally don't write reviews but for professor Hollis, I would. As you seen in previous reviews she's strict on the use of AI and like any other professor if you use it and get caught that's NOT THE PROFESSORS FAULT. Anyways, I ended with the course with 110%+ because of the amount of ec given. Just study the slides and go to lecture she's funny.
loved this class and professor! Gave many extra credit opportunities and writing assignments were pretty straightforward. Js don't use AI at all. Exams were based on textbook and lectures. Didn't attend many lectures but still passed! Make sure to read the chapters assigned and watch the recorded lectures!
Professor was very nice and very funny. Don't listen to this cry baby on here spamming 1 stars, he is mad he got caught with AI. She was honestly amazing and if you just do the work yourself it was insanely easy and she gave tons of extra credit, I literally got above a 100!
i think everyone should know how much professor hollis truly cares about her course. Before coming to class, i'd admit she was intimidating with the whole AI usage but JUST DON't USE IT. even if it's little things like rereading your essay, that's still using it. With that, just go to lecture, we normally get out super early anyways and study.
AVOID IF YOU HAVE THE CHOICE!! Unorganized and untimely. Incredibly difficult to contact outside of class. Took FOREVER to grade assignments and changed major assignment details with little notice. Unfortunately the only prof who teaches 100C so she's impossible to avoid if this is a required course.
Worst professor I've ever had. I read the reviews prior to taking this class and gave her the benefit of the doubt. I got reported for AI and sent to OSSJA even though I did not use it. I have videos and timestamps to prove I did not use it. She was very unorganized, always late, and made last minute changes to the syllabus. PLEASE DON'T TAKE HER.
