she's very down to earth and listens to everyone's opinions. Most of the time she gives u an article or two from the book, you read it discuss it and write an essay. Not to mention she gives you about 2 weeks to do it. I still suck at writing but I improved a lot and i'm more confidant about my writing now. Explains EVERYTHING make sure totake her
She makes you sit in a circle every day and you earn points by participating in group discussions. She does not explain assignments at all. She assigns an essay every week. Not sure I would take a class with her again, but she is very nice and helpful if you ask questions.
Gives entirely too much work. We had an essay do every other day. If you do decide to take this course be prepared to read and write. Syllabus was not clear at all, very hard to understand
Give entirely to much work the disscussion questions are okbut she gives an activity to do as well with over 20 assignments that must be completed every week if you have a life outside of school don't take this class .
Expect to produce a prolific amount of essays, prompts and assignments are often vague and confusing with extensive rubrics. Much less of actual teaching from the professor directly and more learning independently from the book itself makes a lot of this class difficult to comprehend and pass.
Took her online class and let's just say the biggest mistake I ever made In my life. Only if I had gone on this website b4 to look at her rating and I would of saved my money and gpa. Doesn't teach you anything. And instructions for essays r very unclear. Grades each kid differently but gives same comments, Makes no sense!!
Homer is a very tough and unfair with grading. She does not provide clear feedback. Does not communicate well. If you care about your GPA please avoid taking this professor. She is not good at writing and is horrible with spelling while she is very hard in grading your work. I will never take this professor's class or suggest her to anyone.
What Can I Say about homer. Due to my busy schedule I had to take an online class and she was the only one available. Only if I had waited!! I would of saved my gpa and money. Tough grader. Gives WAY too much work. Make sure u have no life or work besides Her class. Save ur money and headache for some other class. Let this be a warning
took 2 months to grade assignments so you don't know how your doing.
There is zero feedback on assignments, she takes forever to grade anything. 14 assignments in 5 days. The most vague directions for assignments I have ever seen. assigned two essays in a period of 4 days. Two days left in the semester? better assign 3 assignments!
Gives way too much work, not very nice, not at all flexible, can't be questioned
I took Creative Writing with professor Homer and I actually liked the class a lot more than I thought I would. I actually had her for English 101 my freshman year but had to drop the course because it was too much work but with English 215 she was a totally different professor.
Do not, I repeat, DO NOT take this professor if you value your GPA . Worst professor I have ever had. Directions are extremely vague, her feedback (if you even want to call it that) is useless, and she assigns a ridiculous amount of work to do every week. I wish the original lit class I wanted wasn't canceled. Would've saved my time and money.
I took this class online and I wasn't happy at all with the way Professor Homer had things set up. Class work was locked until you completed other assignments, and instructions were unclear. Tried emailing her for help and was kinda rude when questioning her methods for teaching. Ended up dropping the class to save my GPA.
Took African American Lit w Prof Homer & LOVED this class!!SO grateful I had the opportunity to be introduced to so many amazing black authors. Yes, there is a LOT of writing & reading - it's a lit class, what do u expect? If ur struggling, email her, go to her office hours. This class inspired me so much. Wish I could take another class w her
Professor Homer is never available when needed. She assigns way to much work in the time that is allowed to work on it. Seriously I loved this subject going into this class, and it just became annoying with the amount of work that was right and not changed, due to the availability and snarkiness in attitude Homer had. Her word was law, awful prof
Do not take this course with this Professor. She is just awful, her grading criteria for an entry level course is so high and literally gives no feedback and just points to the rubric with no guidance. She will screw your GPA, waste your time and essentially take your money. Never take a course with her, unless you like unnecessary stress .
All I have to say is the worst teaching experience I've ever had! Way to much work in the time she gives!!! Just horrible!!! No feedback!!!
hardest teacher i have ever had. Gives you a rubric and tells you to write an essay. She grades things very tough. Be prepared to do a lot of work. Drop this class and take it with someone else; you will save your GPA. You can also find the text books online
Extremely irrational when it comes to completing the amount of work in the time given. Doesn't offer any feedback, even after asking for it directly. I had gotten help from honors students (each saying everything looked good) and still received a poor grade on essays. Don't waste your time or money with this class, take it with someone else.
There's so much homework & she seriously expects you to be the world's best seller in writing essays. She grades like she's teaching an AP class but this is English 101. The worst part is you hardly have any time. She gives you 21 assignments over the span of 21 days, these assignments are hard and students have lives. Does she do this on purpose?
Everyone complains about this professor but i do not know why. Papers are easy, all you have to do is follow the rubric. The class is discussion based so if you don't talk she will mark you absent.
Do NOT take a class with this professor. There is no way in pleasing this woman. You could get Stephen Hawking to help you with your paper and you will still get an F on it. She is so harsh with her grading and gives barely any feedback. I got a 75 on one of my papers all because I forgot to include a TITLE. Treats a 101 class like a PhD level.
Gives a lot of homework and not much feedback on essays. Very tough grader
Passionate about her classes. Handles opposing viewpoints well. Very reasonable with due dates.
Professor Homer, is not the worst professor I've ever had but I would NOT recommend taking her class. Don't think that this class is an easy A because it's not. She assigns a major load of assignments and expects them to be completed within the next class. She is very behind when it comes to grading or giving back feedback.
The worst teacher ever. She gives poor, useless feedback, or any feedback at all. This class is wasting of time, many assignments to do, and doesn't matter how hard you study, you'll get the low grade anyway. Take this class with someone else, she will screw your GPA.
Probably the worst teacher I've ever had. Do NOT take this class. Do yourself a favor and listen to all the other reviews. They're not lying when they say how bad she is. I repeat do NOT take this class with her. Online class she doesn't communicate at all, very tough grader only uses rubrics, very high standards. Your GPA will suffer
Expect old grades to be entered right before the end of the class, so any chances of pulling up a bad grade are next to nothing. You'll think you're doing well for the majority of the class until you realize that she is very behind in updating grades. Her feedback on essays is only one sentence long and not helpful. Chose a different professor.
Best prof I've had for english. Her online class is very straight forward. Gives long reading assignments though, but if you need help she is always there to talk. Would recommend someone to take this class online with her.
Terrible teacher! Things are not very clear in the class. The copious amounts of assignments will have you pulling out your hair. She is very nit-picky with grades, yet isn't very clear about what she wants. The WORST teacher I have ever had!
She is one of the best teachers I've ever had. I really liked her class, and took African American lit the following semester (not my first choice as a lit elective, though I ended up really liking it) in large part because she was the teacher. However, she isn't super clear about what she wants. Get her feedback BEFORE the final paper is due.
Save your time and energy, don't take a class with Professor Homer. Write a great essay, don't follow her unclear, undetailed rubrics and you get a poor grade. Ask for clarification and feedback, get told to read the rubric more clearly. Submit all your assignments on time, wait weeks to get a single grade back. Way too arrogant and unprofessional.
Professor Homer was not clear in her course expectations, and gave minimal feedback when grading. I asked her for help on assignments through email and in person, and she would brush me off like I was annoying her. The final straw was the readings- I had to stay up late to get the homework done and dropped the class since it wasn't worth it.
Courseload is ridiculous. Assigned 6 different papers about one children's book as well as other papers on other reading assignments. Unclear what she wants and gives undetailed to no feedback on graded work. She misspells words in emails, tests, and announcements but expects THE MOST out of her students when she can't even proofread herself. 3/10
I'm pretty confident that this professor will grade you on your intersectional status alone. Absolutely terrible! Avoid at all costs!
I'm shocked at the negative reviews. I really enjoyed her class. It's very discussion-based so come prepared. If you do the reading, you'll get by. She will press you for a more substantive discussion, and usually leans into current social issues. I didn't mind that, but some students did. Her essays were tedious, however.
Gives lots of hw and ALOT of reading!
Worst teacher ever makes excuses , fails to show to class do not take her .
Prof Homer gives an insane amount of work with extremely complicated instructions. She is the worst professor I have ever had. I seriously would not take her!!! If her class wasn't the last one that I needed to graduate then I would've dropped.
She pushes her own agenda and always gears towards feminism, racism and homosexuality-its a children's lit course! The amount of work was also insane, had to read 5 novels and 1 textbook throughout the semester and had 1-2 essays due every other week along with a quiz. The amount of work is ridiculous and good luck if youre taking other classes!
Didnt realize how hard this class was going to be. Wants 3 quizzes, 4 papers, and a discussion post every 5 days. She doesnt let you do anything late and will give you random grades. DO NOT TAKE
A typical homework day from her looks like 20-80 pages of reading (which includes annotating), 1-2 quizzes which are repetitive and don't help you learn anything, and at least one other miscellaneous task. Takes over 3 weeks to grade papers (I'm about to submit my 3rd essay and haven't gotten the grade for my 2nd yet) and just not good at her job
I honestly dont know how she calls herself an English professor. Shes an English teacher and cant even spell things correctly on quizzes and tests. The semester is almost over and I havent even gotten my 2nd paper graded from a month ago. Shes a harsh grader and doesnt explain what you did wrong so you can fix it. DO NOT TAKE.
Just don't take it there are much better professors she offers no feedback on your work and there is countless discussions, quizzes and essays. You basically get 6-8 assignment due per week. And all of them she takes her time to grade and no feedback and value for your hard work.
Hardest class I've taken. The grading is unclear and she is unresponsive to her student's needs. This was a winter/shortened online class and had an extreme amount of work for that time period but whenever it was questioned she would always say "this is what's expected of a 3 credit course." I've taken classes for more credits that were less work.
I'm genuinely surprised at the negative reviews...I've never had an issue in her class. Her assignments are very straight forward and her class has highly engaging.
The volume of coursework is nearly impossible to keep up with, and the professor offers zero substantive feedback. Does not respond to requests for feedback, leaves weeks of assignments ungraded. Class focus is on the professor's selected theme rather than on composition, making the class itself pointless and unintuitive.
She acts like students are a bother to her. She gives way too much work and on top of that she wants assignments due before the due date. She doesn't proof read anything she puts out.
I have never had a problem receiving proper criticism from teachers that allowed me to get A's, until I took this course. It was like pulling teeth trying to get decent grades when writing papers and assignments. Her attitude on most things did not help. By end of the semester I had multiple assignments she never graded, which made my grade suffer!
so tough in grading to the point it discourages you because she gives you no feedback. Very specific when grading but not when discussing. Put grades in last minute. Wouldnt recommend!!
Shorter course, still insane amount of work. About 80 pages + annotations worth of reading per week, along with an essay every 2 weeks. Hardly any time in between lessons to catch your breath. Poor grading system, gives out whatever grade she feels like. Does not follow rubric. Grades insanely late, does not answer e-mails. AVOID!!!!
I am astonished by the negative ratings. Maybe the kind of student that vibes w Homer is not the kind of student that bothers w these websites. She's hard to read but if you take the time to meet her and talk to her you will find her accommodating. Use her detailed grading rubrics. Go to her office hours. Her expertise and knowledge is invaluable.
I am surprised by the number of negative reviews. I had a very positive experience with Homer. She was open to helping whenever students needed it and provides a ton of feedback on essays. She doesn't grade based on students' opinions and wishes for students to improve. However, be prepared to do a lot of reading and annotating.
Homer is a very smart and passionate prof. She gives a lot of work and expects it to be submitted on time. NO LATE WORK. Shes a late grader, so you dont know where you stand until the end of the semester. However she cares about her students and is willing to help where she can but dont look for her to hold your hand
Hardest class ever. Every assignment is worth 100 pts so if you miss one, good luck. Don't even bother turning it in late because youll get no credit. The essays were hard and it was a struggle to meet the word count given the prompts. The prompts seemed to be centered around her own agenda. Shes a tough grader and her expectations are unclear.
The workload was way too intense for a community college. Minimum 6 assignments per week that can take hours. I barely passed as an A or B student.
Many people don't like Homer's class because of the amount of work that needs to be put in but it's no more than would need to be done for a high school class As long as you manage your time and do the assignments you've got a good grade energetic and loves discussions Will work with you when you are having a tough time as long as you reach out.
Workload and topics were depressing, couldn't focus on other classes at all. Critical with grading in essays, discussions, even annotating. She made me feel less of myself until my repeat summer classes, I realized English 101 is not supposed to be that hard. However, if you are an activist type of person who loves extreme courses, you'll like her.
I suggest everyone to pay attention to the reviews here, trust me, they aren't off by a centimeter. Asking her questions was useless as everything was "read the syllabus" as if it helps with the course work itself. Doesn't respond to emails, too busy figuring out what can she F. I suggest taking an 6 week term, you will definitely pass! Stay away
The professor is tough on grading the essay. I think she expects more than what is required to be done in Comp 101 class. Focuses more on the resources provided by the students in the essay rather than also appriciating the personal thoughts and opinions of the student.
BEWARE!!! please please please DO NOT listen to the good reviews and think theres a small chance of hope. this is the WORST professor i ever had. goes for the jugular when grading essays, gives NO feedback on them for improvement, and expect to have 80+ pages of reading & 6 assignments due EVERY OTHER DAY & NOTHING late accepted no matter what
worst professor ever! no feedback on anything & you will never know how youre actually doing in the class because of the way she grades. its a toss up guessing game at the end of the semester. im a straight A student in ever course i have taken and im hoping to just pass this class even barely. TAKE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR PLEASE SHE SHOULD BE FIRED!
do not take this person ever. this is an intro english course and i feel as though im doing work for a dissertation. unreal
Very kind and makes you actually feel welcome in her class. She is a very good professor, and her grades are very realistic; but push you to try harder.
This professor is completely unorganized, overbearing, and incompetent. The work load is unnecessarily immense, especially considering the fact that many community college students are balancing work and their family lives (I am a father of a young child).
please for me guess don't take her class she's horrible she make it seem like it honors and it's not I would not recommend at all serious for example if your a minute late on a assignment you will not get any credit first time college student definitely don't take her course I don't think she's a good teacher at all
I loved learning about writing with this professor
I took this course over summer session UA, so it was only 5 weeks long instead of 14. That being said, it's definitely important to pace yourself properly and be prepared to make multiple revisions to each of your essays. The essays account for a significant portion of your final grade. Slightly more challenging than I expected, but good overall.
Most unorganized professor ever, failed poet for a reason and she's even worse as a teacher. Never again
she is not cooperative and she causes a lot of confusion on her course
most liberal left wing feminist ever. failed poet and doesn't know how to teach. failed poet for a reason
don't take class with her
She is not a good professor. Wants answers that fit her politics. Lectures don't cover the material of the class assigned. Will not communicate outside of class (emails). Harsh grader in general. Had so much anxiety when it came to this class. Do not take any of her classes!
Do not take this class! Unless you want to stress! Felt lost throughout this class, she will not email back so the only way to contact her outside of class is during office hours. But she will not give good feedback and will say "It's in the readings or syllabus".
This professor is politically motivated in her teaching. I feel as if we learned more about history than anything related to English. If I had the choice to go back in time and not take her class, I would. Never again.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HER SAVE YOURSELF!!! HORRIBLE
She takes forever to respond to an email about anything you need help with or just want to clarify something about an assignment. I would not recommend this professor in a completely online course!
The class is terrible, and the professor only grades and doesn't seek to help students. I don't recommend taking this class if you haven't written a book or if you're a new student, as the professor doesn't help you adapt to the university system; she just makes things difficult for you and gives you bad grades. Don't take her class.
I personally felt this class wasn't that hard. All you had to do was just actually show up and stay in tune with the work that was given and you'd pass easily. If you're taking her class for the first time I'd say ask a lot of questions—the class is repetitive so once you get it you got it.
Im glad that I'm done her class she's a very hard grades like no joke. If I had to repeat this class I would have picked a different teacher honestly but thank god I passed it. We were mostly learn about MLA format instead of reading books.
I had such a good time in her class and was shocked by how many negative reviews she got. She was kind, caring, and passionate. She made what could have been a boring online English class engaging with the texts and videos she chose. If you work hard, this class will teach you so much. Responsive over email and online office hours.
I'm currently taking her class and I cannot wait for it to be over. She doesn't respond to emails regarding anything but will sarcastically and rudely respond to your entries for class discussions. I have yet to learn anything that I can academically take with me. It's definitely gives failed poet.
Barely responds to emails gives annoying busy work with many steps that don't make sense, very particular ways of submitting assignments they must me downloaded as a Microsoft doc and with a link one drive added . She took a month to add in grades and is a tough grader. When responding emails she gives attitude and made me feel stupid
