she is very cute and funny.. she posts ppt slides.. notes are very helpful.. no writing just exams.. exam are detailed but straightforward.. if you go to lectures n study ull be fine.. materials are very informative.. i learned a lot in this class.. she is a great teacher!! STRONGLY REcommended!!
Easy interesting class. I learned a lot about sex. :) and other stuff too.
She is a very good teacher. As long as you pay attention in class (which is not hard to do) you will ace most of the exams. Just do a little studying and follow her study guides and you'll do fine. She does fun random polls in class that make it very exciting and interesting.
The class was verrrry interesting. She was great and enthusiastic which made the class fun. She did give study guides, but the m/c questions were really random.
excellent teacher!!! funny w/ her personal stories and all... TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Human Sexuality was a blast. The teacher is funny with her personal stories and experiences. Lots of laughs in that class. Definitely recommended.
She was a very nice and excellent professor, but she packed so much chapters into lecture, didn't even have time to go over some of the materials. Definitely read the text and print out her PPT slides. Yah, the exam questions were a bit too detailed and random...but she has a very generous curve
This Class was great. The prof was sooo funny and interesting. Tests were fair and fairly graded.
Class was okay, pretty interesting. Make sure she has TA's who are willing to do their job correctly. And when taking exams, make sure you bubble really really dark. Supposedly, the scantron machine makes mistakes and so you are accused of cheating. Sucks doesn't it? GL with the class.
nicole was amazing. she helped the class understand the material through analogies and just basic explanation. she was great. i highly recommend this class, not only for its subject matter, but because she is AWESOME!!
fun class...interesting material...pulls out some random questions for midterms...just go to lecture and read the parts of the book she doesn't cover...easy class..
Very interesting class! She did have some great analogies and stories. It really isn't an easy "A" unless you really study and look over notes. But, grades are deserving of effort put in. She did offer extra credit and gave SMALL curves on tests. Interesting, but you must work for your A cuz it's all multiple choice. Except 1st MT label anatomies.
Crappy teacher. She took a great subject and ruined it. Human sexuality, how can you make that boring?! well, just ask nicole, she accomplished it. her lectures were terrible; she is inconsistant with spelling in her slides, which in an anatomy class is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. I got b but should have gotten A She messed up grades on 2 of my tests.
East class, fun teacher. What more do you need to know? Seriously, everyone should take this class.
Okay teacher. Test are not as easy as you would think. They are not hard. YOu have to do a lot of ready to get an A. if you dont study u can get a B. Honestly i would rather take the class by another teacher.
She is very clear in lectures, always posts the slides online, and does whatever she can to help students (online chats before tests, office hours online, prompt responses to e-mails, etc.) Even though she is very clear and helpful, her tests are not super easy so you do have to do a lot of studying to get that A.
she makes interesting topics sooo boring.
She made what should've been an easy A a hard one, and made what should've been a fun topic a painful one. She's sincerely trying, but someone needs to tell her she's teaching human sexuality because she thinks she's teaching something way more important.
Fun class, but she makes it a little boring, and in my opinion she seems judgmental. She got upset and turned red with embarrasment when some people streaked through our class, and IMO that is the last thing a human sexuality teacher should be upset and embarrased about. She knows her stuff however, and she has a panel at the end of the class.
great professor! lectures notes are put up ahead of time so you can print them out and bring them to class. tests are fairly easy if you study from her notes and skim through the book. highly recommended!
She is the perfect professor for this class. Her TAs weren't so great, but I learned a lot from her lectures.
This was such an awesome class, and she is a great professor. It was always fun and interesting to go to class, and I learned a lot. The tests aren't easy, but as long as you study and go to class, you can do just fine!
Her tests were...hard and not all based on lectures. I came upon questions that were neither in the book or lectures sometimes...which is odd. I didnt like the lectures about bodily parts, it was too long and tedious to remember. In all, this class had potential to be better and more interesting but is actually pretty dull. The slides are all text
relatively easy class, i hardly ever opened the book and got an A. really no point in going to lectures though, she goes right off the powerpoints (which are conveniently posted before each class). she's nice, and answers any and all questions, but she doesn't offer anything outside of what she's already written.
Very nice and helpful. You can tell she really enjoys teaching this class, which makes it fun. I personally didn't find the class to be very hard, but then again I know of people who averaged a C on the three tests. I never opened the book - not once- and got about an 89%...we'll see if she rounds it up. UPDATE- SHE DIDN'T. =(
Nicole C. Polen is absolutley adorable. She is really excited about what she's teaching and very funny. I never read from the book. The test is based off lectures and the carol reading. If you do the necessary studying it's easy to do well
I really enjoyed this class and though that Prof. Polen was an great lecturer. Her slides and clear and the tests are designed from the lectures. I didnt find anything on the tests that she hadnt previously gone over. Also she gives the class the opition to write a paper that will take the place of the lowest test grade.
I loved this class. personally i thought it was easy, if you're having trouble try reading the book. she's nice, fun to talk to after class if you have something relevant to discuss. i had a lot of fun being on the sex panal at the end of the quarter.
Okay lecturer. Fairly interesting. Exams sometimes a little weird and some questions are never mentioned in lectures and book. A lot of times, I found common sense to be the best answer in her exams. My biggest complaint is that there's not enough photos and films, and just looking at paragraphs can get rather dull.
Great professor! She brings humor into her lecture and is happy to answer questions. Just pay attention in lecture and you'll do perfect. I wish I could take this class again and again.
Great lecturer! She gave lots of examples from her life. gave free answers on tests during review sessions. Very helpful and loves it when people ask questions.
the best class ive ever taken! shes really nice and funny. the first midterm is pretty tedious because you have to memorize the anatomy of both genders and it kinda sucks. i did better on this midterm tho, than the other 2. make sure you do the optional paper, it really boosts your grade if you did bad on tests. Go to Giselle for TA, shes better.
Great class. Tests are easy, she lectures with power points but you have to attend class because she leaves blanks in the notes. Lectures are funny and interesting. You dont need to read the book. The only complaint I have is that she is hard to get ahold of (I emailed her like 7 times and she never emailed me back). I would highly recommend!
great professor. class (hde12) is very interesting, and she makes it even better. very helpful, can explain very well. tests are fairly easy if you pay attention in class and study.
A good class she just needs to learn how to tell time. Class isn't over when your power point is done, it's over when time is up
I took human sexuality with her. It was a really easy class if you studied the slides very carefully. It helps a lot to go to lecture. It's not hard either when the subject matter is so interesting. Don't buy the textbook. its a waste of money because you wont be graded on the subject matter in it. Definitely fun class to take
Good class, easy. Professor and TAs were helpful. Paper was easy and doable. The panels helped a lot.
Not an easy A, but definitely better than Harper! You really must read the book to do well. Her multiple choice questions were usually what got me on the exams. Easy paper and helpful study guides. If you go to class and read, you should expect an A or B.
She goes through lectures really fast, but goes through everything in the textbook. The class itself isn't hard as long as you go to all the lectures and keep up with the reading.
lectures are short summaries of the information in the book. the tests are based off of lectures, although one or two questions may be from the book. she goes through lectures relatively quickly so class tends to be a little over an hour rather than two hours. she shows 3 movies in class and makes lectures fun. this is class is definitely manageabl
The class was not as easy as I thought. I think she makes the exam more tricky because people do really well. The questions aren't everything she covers in class so read book. Don't just skim! You have to memorize details from lectures notes and the book well! Class was both boring and interesting, depending on the topic.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this professor. She is so funny and interesting. I had her for HDE 12 and 100C and changed my major to HDE because of her. She is the BEST teacher I have ever had. Her exams can be somewhat tricky but easy enough if you actually study. HIGHLY recommend this teacher.
Most people like her because her exams are simple and her lectures straightforward, and she's very nice and entertaining. However, she is NOT accessible at all to students is so difficult to get a hold of. Her lectures basically entail her reading the powerpoint slides verbatim, and her examples are limited to personal experience('My sister did..')
This was the most frustrating class I have taken yet. Basically a Jr. High School sex-ed class, Polen offers nothing of value. The class is pretty easy, don't buy the text book. I took away nothing from this class. Unless you are a conservative virgin without internet access, the only thing you will learn is the medical term for the "taint".
love her! as long as you go to lecture, the exams are pretty easy. dont need to buy the book. she's extremely open and easy to talk to. the class was awesome!
Shes a GREAT TEACHER!She tells stories to bring her lectures to life, lets you out early some times, is helpful, SO VERY APPROACHABLE, kind, crystal clear, her tests are perfect (not too hard or easy) and she grades papers perfectly also. I Love her!!!
Awesome teacher, very passionate. Gives personal examples and her office hours are really helpful. Definitely learned a lot. Beware however, that she co-teaches w/ Barbara Shebloski who is horrible. Polen taught the second half of the class.
She's Changed, Her tests are very tricky now! Lecture is 40% of the tests, book is 60%. She misses classes for personal reasons, then runs us through two long lectures in in class period (very bad for students) She NEVER responds to e-mails. She Wont hold office hours after 3rd exam. TA's are told not to hold office ether! What CRAP!
she taught the 2nd half of the class with shebloski. i thought she was a little boring. she provided powerpoint slides but i didn't think her lectures were engaging. her test was multiple choice and some short answers. i don't think i would take her again.
Professor Polen is a great teacher. She is really funny and always has a story to tell that exemplifies whatever subject we may be discussing. Even during the stress of planning her wedding, she was still prepared, which is saying a lot. Overall she is an interesting person teaching an interesting class. I completely recommend taking her class.
I'll admit, she's a really interesting person and her lectures are funny and witty. But honestly, things crash when it comes to her midterms. 1st midterm, half of it was anatomy, a feat easily accomplished by sheer memorizing. However, her 2nd and 3rd midterms got hard, and I must add that, for a lower division class, she taught it tough!
Her lectures are REALLY interesting! Test are multiple choice and hey! its a Really easy class and yes she does curve ^__^
HER TESTS ARE EXTREMELY TRICKY. EXTREMELY TRICKY! SHE DOESN'T GO OVER EVERYTHING IN HER LECTURES, SO YOU !HAVE! TO READ THE BOOK.
Ridiculous! Took a MC test more than two weeks ago, and still haven't received our grades. Very disorganized! Material is interesting, but the disorganization of the professor almost makes it not worth it!
You THINK this is going to be any easy class.. but its NOT. the tests are VERY tricky. It is easy if you make a lot of flashcards and memorize things. Definitely an interesting subject matter but if you don't like to work... dont take this class. it does require work! She drops one test grade which is nice but her tests are once again, VERY TRICKY.
Awful teacher! Got a B+ due to controversial questions on the test.
The class does require some work but it's not over the top. The professor is a very interesting individual and does a good job explaining material, but that may her downfall. She does such a good job that she sometimes strays off on a tangent in lecture and does not get through all the material or so I believe. Overall, good teacher and recommend.
not exactly an easy breezy A. i would say this class is medium, the difference between an A an B is reading the book. i just read her slides and skimmed the book and got B+, was 2pts away from A-. doesn't really give a real curve, best 3/4 exams added 5pts to just 1 exam & one 5pt EC. she's a funny lady but yeah her MC are kinda kicky, know details
Professor Polen is a great professor who knows her material very, very well. Thus, her tests are hard but fair. If you read the book, you will definitely get an A. Her tests aren't as hard as people make them to be, you just need to put in some effort outside of lecture notes. Not an easy A but not hard. GREAT CLASS. SUPER INTERESTING. RECOMMEND!
Reading these comments I must say she have mentioned to the class that she doesn't write the exams at all. She gets them from the textbook. I don't think her exams questions are that tricky.
This class isn't a just-go-to-class and expect an A+ class. There is memorization for the MC tests if you don't remember small details of say pregnancy from high school biology. Easy B class for sure. Her stories and videos were both helpful and super amusing to the otherwise dull lecture. Got to learn little factoids about contraception.
For you science majors out there don't take this class when you have a heavy workload. The 2nd and 3rd midterm required detailed memorization (to the point of memorizing statistics). She lectures straight from powerpts - the reason people find it interesting is she tells you stories and people ASK the interesting topics. Overrated sex ed class.
Interesting class. The paper is a good chunk of your grade, and lets you analyze yourself, which I thought was really helpful. Exams are multiple choice, taken mostly from lecture slides, and some from the textbook.
Interesting class which helps you get through the reading (not mandatory, recommended) and her lectures. Always has funny stories to tell. Her essays, including the paper for the class, help boost up the grade. She may curve sometimes depending on whether she sees needed. Her test are more of applying your knowledge to a scenario. Can get tricky.
She's so much fun, and keeps you interested while learning. Attendance isn't mandatory, but why would you not want to go?!
I was told that this was the easiest class in Davis.. not even close. its about the same as most other classes. "Study guides" are misleading and only covers 70 percent of the material. so you have to do a lot of reading on your own. Teacher is pretty funny. Paper is a pain.
She clearly knows her subject and is quite enthusiastic about it. However, all her exams are directly derived from the textbook NOT her lectures. To pass the class you need only read the required material(something I unfortunately learned AFTER the first exam). Pretty disappointed with that tbqh. But overall the class was enjoyable.
Polen is so interesting and funny. The class does require some studying but if you read the book you'll do fine. If you have a chance to take her, do it! She makes lectures interesting and relatable.
Fun class but you do have to put effort into it. Not the easiest GPA booster.
This isn't the easiest GE class, but it's fairly interesting. It's basically a challenging, informative sex ed class. The tests were not that hard, but reading the text is necessary if you want an A. Prof. Polen is very nice and enthusiastic about this subject and uses personal examples often to explain things. Overall good class
Prof. Polen is really knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the topic. Though the topic is very interesting, it makes getting through lectures difficult. Discussions and questions in lecture make it so that not all the material on the syllabus is covered. It's necessary to read the book if you want an A. The paper is pretty easy and is fairly graded
She is friendly, laid back, and open to ANY question you might have. Exams were very easy, and the material is interesting and memorable.
I got a B just by going to class. Easily-graded paper, fair tests that do require using the textbook, but the homework does a pretty good job of familiarizing you with the terms anyway. She makes this a fun & interesting course.
Lectures from condensed notes based on her own textbook. Very generous with grades and dealing with organizational grading issues given the size of the class. Exams are reasonable if you do the reading and re-do the online homework beforehand.
I sincerely enjoyed this class. The paper (which a lot of people complain about) takes about 2 hours to write. The tests are fair and based on reading and lectures. Nicole is a wonderful person and very passionate about the subject, which makes lectures much easier.
She rarely taught entire lecture time. When she did teach, she told stories of herself. Exams often brought up concepts either barely taught or not taught at all. The text required was poorly written, by this same professor. I have searched for other publications, but I could not find one. It is easy to question her overall credibility.
One of my favorite classes at UCD! Professor is funny and makes class enjoyable, the subject is interesting and the tests are easy. Easy A.
If you are looking for an easy A, avoid at all costs. You have to put in so much effort to get an A it is not even worth it (considering it is a GE class). Tests are not hard, assuming you love spending a ton of time reading the textbook and memorizing every random fact in it. Class is mildly interesting, but it can be hard to stay focused.
This class was very interesting. The professor always had very interesting stories to tell. There was a lot of homework and she tested on very random and specific details from the textbook. This class wasn't too hard though. Definitely not hard to get an A in if you put in a little extra effort.
Love her, she's so cool! Tells relevant stories/anecdotes relating to material to make lectures interesting. Very valuable class, both in material and how it makes you think. 3 midterms/final (lowest dropped), weekly homework (easy), and paper on development of your sexual identity (actually very interesting/reflective). Good GE credit (DD), easy A
Her lectures were the highlight of my day! The topics she covers are very interesting, even more the way she presents them (great and relatable stories). Now for studying, there is no need write notes since she gives you powerpoint slides (thanks professor!), but also reading is necessary for information that is vaguely or isn't presented in class.
She's a great professor! She makes lecture fun, but if you want to pass her class then start reading! The test consisted of random facts from the book. Good luck! Not an easy A.
This is a god awful class. Way harder than it needs to be, professor wrote a garbage textbook and then expects you to know the irrelevant minutia from it for the tests. I seriously question her knowledge on the subject as she seems grossly uninformed. She did not show up to 5/8 lectures before the first midterm and was overall uninterested. Sad!
Run away, do not take this class with her! Requires detailed reading and memorization of the text, even certain statistics. Didn't show up for half the quarter before mt1... The exams are very tricky and detailed, prepare to spend hours memorizing... Not an easy A
She's an awesome lecturer, and the class is not too bad, the paper is a main thing. But its 2 midterms and a final, highest 2 scores, the midterms aren't cumulative. BUT the tests are deceptively hard, study way ahead for those, and read ALL of the highlights in the book. Clicker for participation, learned a lot, not necessarily an easy A.
This is a great class! She always has a personal story about the material and it makes the class more relatable. Go to class for iClicker participation and study the book & lecture slides for tests. One 6-8 page paper but it's autobiographical so don't stress. Don't expect an easy A, but if you put in the work the class is really rewarding.
Prof. Polen-Petit is one of the most knowledgeable professors I've had. She knows what she's talking about and is passionate, which makes lectures easier to get through. In terms of the class, it is an easy A, as long as you put in a decent amount of time to study. The final is optional, and attendance is mandatory (she uses clickers).
She is hilarious and makes learning fun, she likes to tie in her personally stories and experiences with the lecture
Good class to get those requirements. But kind of lost some respect when I was waiting outside of class early and she walked up, I said hi to her and she looked at me and literally did not say anything. I was just trying to be polite not have a whole convo, for someone who talks about being so connected to people. It really doesn't show.
This class is known as an easy A but Polen really makes you work for it. I attended every lecture and studied a decent amount for the midterms and got Cs and Bs. There are 3 papers for the class which is quite ambitious for a 500 person class. She grades the papers very hard and believes that only a "perfect" paper deserves an A.
was initially very excited to take hde 12 because of how interesting other students mentioned it was. however i'm pretty dissapointed with how the Polen taught the class.. she was really boring in my opinion and was also rude when I approached her with questions. I would recommend taking this class but with a different professor.
This class was unnecessarily difficult for a 3 unit GE course. There are 3 papers, 2 midterms, homework assignments through an online mandatory textbook (about $80), clicker questions, and an optional final. I understand this a 500 person class, but grading took forever. 2/3 paper grades weren't uploaded until the day of the final. Avoid if you can
Test heavy class with three papers. I found the content of the class to be a little boring and I didnt learn anything all quarter, I was honestly hoping for a more interesting GE.
Professor Polen-Petit definitely knows what she is talking about, and does a great job of applying examples from her own life into lecture. The class is one of the most interesting I feel that universities have to offer, but I was slightly off-put by how disinterested Polen-Petit acted at times. She often missed lecture and came off as rude.
Shes clearly so passionate about what she teaches, and I found the class so interesting! As a pre-med student, this class is fascinating, easy, and a great GE with lots of anatomy and psychology. There was only one paper and it was basically an autobiography; so easy. Love this class! Definitely recommend for an easy A.
I honestly found this class super boring but it was easy online during COVID. Homework is easy 100% and the essay is graded pretty easily. Exams are easy if you fill out the study guide. Lectures are pretty disorganized online and often went over time but I stopped going and just used the textbook and posted lecture slides to fill out study guide.
She was OK, but she kinda just taught how to be a decent person and respect people for who they are. I took this class as a GE and I didn't really learn anything. I listened to the lectures but never took notes. Easy class, but not super engaging. Maybe more interesting for others, just not me.
god help you if you take this class, its super easy, but you MUST do all the reading which is usually 100 pages a week. Some weeks she gets a little spicy and assigns 200+ pages. If youre any self respecting student with actual classes that require a lot of work do not take this class, youll be drowning in reading that has multiple grammar mistakes
this professor is delusional. I took her for a 3 credit class but had over 100+ pages of reading a week that took me up to 5 hours to do every day. She's obviously passionate about what she teaches because apparently, her class is the only thing that matters. And just to add the textbook she assigns is not friendly to non-English speakers, have fun
Textbook reading was a bit tedious, but easily do able. Highly recommend reading as majority of the exam questions come from the textbook. Some questions on the TEDTalks. The paper was stressful only because it was an autobiography and wasn't positive how to go about it. But they are pretty easy on grading, so don't stress too much.
The hardest GE class I have taken at UC Davis. Be ready to memorize the whole textbook.
Dr spoken is an amazing professor. She is very passionate about this topic and she is very inclusive and sensitive about it. The main paper for the class is long, but she announces the prompt with plenty of time. I think this is a class everyone should take and Polen made it an amazing experience.
Very passionate about her teaching, kind of unaccessible out of office hours. TA's weren't as helpful either. Not accomodating on deadlines even with extenuating circumstances. Recorded lectures were not as content heavy as textbook reading, and questions on tests were based on the book. Needed to watch TED talks as they show up on tests as well.
