He is ok but he skips on some details which will make your life a living hell
He knows his stuff, so you will understand the material well and do good in the coourse
explains things very well, knows what he is talking about. talks pretty fast so u better keep up
Prof. Shell is what you call a teacher. He knows his stuff and brings it across to his students very well. I would recommend that anyone who hates math should take his class, you will find a new found love for math.
Very good, exams are ok.
Goes too fast and not interested in helping students learn. Assumes you follow him but he talks to the board and not the class.
do not recommend him!
he is a very great professor...best prof i had at ccny
i had him for 2 semesters. He's good, exams are somewhat ok, and very linear when correcting exams; take him and u'll get a good grade for the final. If u 2 minutes late for his class, u might not understand for the whole period, since he goes so fast.
Prof. Shell is okay. Sometimes he can be clear sometimes he can confused you even more. but overall he's ok.
he is very clear and explains the problesm properly. the tests are tricky as heck!FINAL WAS OVERKILL. homework is ok. overall: a great professor!
Don't take him.I was adviced by this site that he was ok.But i'm taking him now and he's the worst profesor i have ever had in my life. The very worst. So if you want to have a bad semester with dark nights and a possible c- or F.Then take him.
he is a terrible professor.Very theoretical and makes up his own questions. He's a difficult professor and a harsh grader.I got an A- in his class but my other classes suffered because of all the effort.Don't take him.I 'll never take him for any other maths class.Horrid!
Does not care about student.Likes to fail students.Don't take him.I was the only one that passed his class. All my friends failed.
i took him in fall '05 and i had to drop it. he has no concept of whether or not the class is with him or not. he often covers the board when he writes, also his drawings on the board stink. I'm taking 203 with someone else.
Prof shell is better than most math teachers at CCNY. Though he teaches fast, U get the point if U come to class well prepared. Exams are "standard" as he asks what U are supposed to know in his class. I ended up with an A- although with gruelling effort. I'll take him again anyday. Thumbs up Niel.
He goes fast but is very clear. His test are fair if you know your material. He is helpful and wants everyone to do well. He is a great overall prof.
Expect that 4 of 5 questions will be easy, one (for 20 pts) will be something he barely mentioned. He's generally fair, and is helpful. He's a hard grader. Learn the material before going to class, otherwise you'll get nothing out of it.
Prof shell is not so bad. He's a good professor.I expected worst after reading his review but when i took him.I discovered he's great.May be boring in class but he gave most of the people in class a good grade and curves sometimes. He cares about his student so don't give up.He gave most of the students in class extra points.
I wish every professor in the CCNY math department was like him. This is not an easy class but he's here to help you. Bring your A game and you'll be rewarded.
One of the smartest math professors that I have encountered. He definitely knows his stuff very well. He is funny too. He explains and teaches very fast. His exams are fair. It gets a little hard. He grades generously as well. The dept. final is somewhat harder. The minor problem is that when he goes so fast, he makes careless errors. But take him.
i gave him a 2 for clarity, becaues he goes too fast with the lectures. He does confuse you when he tries to bring another topic sometimes. The test was very similar from the hw. i expected some tricky question, but the exam wasn't so bad afterall.
This professor is exellent. He nows the stuff he is teaching, if you did not understand something he will gladly explain it in class. The lecture is straight forward and if you pay attention and take notes in should be a breeze for you. Although he may seem strict he is very friendly. Best math teacher ever!
The guy is pretty much useless not only are his lectures useless but his exam questions are different from the homework he assigns
This professor only knows how to teach himself
This professor is useless do not take his class, it is true that he only teach himself. If you feel like withdrawing from a class take him because that is what most of his students did, and if you also feel like not learning anything take him.
makes alot of mistakes...does not know how to teach...if you get him just read the book and learn the material yourself and you will be ok on the tests
He seems to be a nice person but he really seems unable to explains the topics/concepts to students. this is a REAL problem when you cannot fully understand the text. the shame of this is that I LOVE math but he was unable to help in any way.
his teaching skills were very usless and the way he taught it was like he only taught for a few studenst and once they understood he belived evey1 else understood...on his midterm 9 out of 35 ppl passed
i will not recommend this prof....dont take him.....he doesnt know how to teach...boring class
he is excellent at teaching. nothing bad on him at all. i have no idea why people giving him such bad comment. i took 391 with him. he is funny and generous when it comes to grading. most of the time if you have small error errors on the test, he won't even take off points as soon as you understand the way to solve the problem. highly suggest him!!
He is a good professor. His exams are really fair. You must study from the textbook in order to pass them. He is also a fair grader. He speaks fast sometimes and you might miss some info but he is willing to go over what he covered. His exams prepares you for the final, so if you do well on his exams, you ace the final.
This class will be hard if you don't read prior to class. He teaches a bit fast but is willing to explain everything again. His finals are not easy since he asks you to prove a few concepts. You must know your math terminology well in order to get an A on his exams. He's a good prof. and a fair grader overall. Good exam grades = A on final.
Don't take him just don't... You will be disappointed or worse depressed 1) He goes too fast 2) Alot of the teachers are smart but their teaching skills are poor 3)Looking at other kids in math201 coming out, you could see the sadness of their face like the world is about to end, come the first day if it's him... switch quick or you'll be sorry!
This teacher is alright! his class tests are HARDD but the final was pretty easy! the questions he gives on his tests are pretty tricky not similar to wat u see on the final exam wudnt take him again though coz he talks too fast and his exam questions are tough!
This professor is the worst. He comes into class with a attitude all the time. Math was my favorite subject then i had this a**hole and everything changed. His exam are hard and he grades harder than other prof. If you have him pls change if you want to save your gpa.
Shell is a good professor and very helpful. he gives homework and goes over it in class, but doesn't check or grade it. CALCULUS IS A HARD CLASS, IF YOU DON'T DO HOMEWORK AND STUDY ON YOUR OWN TIME YOU WILL FAIL. He does go fast sometimes, but if you ask him to go over it again he will. If you don't ask questions he's going to assume you understood
he talks way too fast like he's racing to get through everything, and somehow he still doesnt.
Gives 4 exams(drops the lowest score) and a final. His exams are pretty much all of the examples he does in class and he does not put anything unexpected. Even though there's nothing that's unexpected you have to study hard to get a good grade.
Great prof. He just loves math and is very energetic when lecturing. Funny too. Possibly the smartest prof I've had, yet totally humble and understands how hard the material is to the students. Very willing to use his own time to help us and print useful stuff for us.
IF ANYBODY TAKES HIM, WARNING YOU WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND ANYTHING!! MAYBE THIS GUYS NEEDS TO LEARN HOW TO SAY "," and "." IN HIS WORDS. HE IS TALKING WAY TOO FAST TO EVEN LISTEN WHAT KIND OF LANGUAGE HE SPEAKS AND HIS BODY ALWAYS BLOCKS THE PROBLEM THAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT! ITS LIKE OK I DONT GET U BUT PLEASE LET ME SEE THE PROBLEM! HORRIBLE PROF.
approach him after class or during office hours hes very helpful. Calc 3 has alot of material, seems he just wants to finish n doesnt check if students understand, trust me they dnt.hes lefty so he blocks the board, n towards the end of the semester hes pretty much at the board teaching himself the material n not the students.USE TXT-BOOK& Youtube
i took him for calculus 1 years ago, making it my second time taking calc1 since i failed before, and i failed this class too, making 2 failures. but again that was my fault for loly gagging too much. he is a boring prof but cares about his students. i actually learned from him even though i failed. im an A student(now) aceing calc2/3 etc
He is one of the best teachers I had. Very clear, goes over homeworks before the exams. Exams are very straight forward and the final is in the same manner. Highly Recommended!
nice guy, covers everything in class, does reviews before each exam. exams are easy, uses question similar to the ones from the book.Gives hint before the matlab exams.Tries to help in every way... even after class. Only problem i faced is he blocks the board since he is left handed, and some tiimes i didnt really understand what he was talking..
OMG One of my hardest semester, this guy rushes like hell. He is helpful outside the class but his exams always involve one tricky question which is 20% of the exam lol.. plus he doesn't curve. I wouldn't take him again. Good Luck !!!
I am writing this evaluation a while after I finish calc203 with professor shell. after 3 calc classes and two more advanced (391, 392) I am sure that he is the best Math professor at City College.
If you are 5 min late he covers half the board and goes too fast. I have seen a professor teach that fast. Exams are OK. But he is a hard grader.Avoid if u can
Professor Shell knows exactly what he is teaching. Math203 itself is a difficult class and by the time you reach this class, you'll know how to prepare for math classes. Just show up and be ready, he tends to go very fast and try to sit on the left side of class. Hard to see on the right. He is a great professor and he's always there to help
Nice guy, gives lots of partial credits on test. Study and you'll get good grade, be careful of the final though he doesn't write it and its a lot harder than his normal exams throughout the year.
In general, if you finished all the homework questions and understand them all, you will get a A+ for the exams. There will be 4 mid-term exams plus the final. He will drop the lowest grade for one of the mid-term exams. The average mid-term grades are around 85. He speaks very fast in class and LOTS of notes. He is very good professor for cal3.
He's a good professor, no doubt about that. My only problem is that he goes too fast, that's it. He's nice, understanding, helpful, and knows his stuff. His exams are a very similar to the homework problems. Do the homework and you won't have a problem. 4 exams, drops one, no quizzes and gives two questions for the matlab final.
A really nice guy but he likes to put questions from the final. Warns you what is on the exam, not the best ex plainer but no the worst math professor there. Overall, matlab test was super easy though, two questions from the previous things he taught.
very quick lectures -- goes over a lot of info in one class. tests are doable. just do the hw questions -- helps alot, very similar questions. txtbk may help a little
One of the best professor's you can get. He talks pretty quickly, so you really need to pay attention to his lectures. Assignments aren't checked so you can basically do them whenever you want, and he goes over them a class or two before the exam. He has some occasional dry humor too. All in all a great prof and would take him again.
Great professor. Takes the time to stress certain key points that are fundamental in a specific topic. Also outlines common mistakes for students to avoid. Easy grader and will give plenty of partial credit (if deserved). Some complain he goes too fast but I think his pace is just fine.
He goes fast and lectures are long. But, if you pay attention you should at least get an A-. He's also a very nice guy and a generous grader.
Great professor. Go see him for extra help if you need to. His exams are fair. He grades them fairly and generously at times. If you focus on class examples and homework problems, then you should be fine.
Difficult material to start thinking in 3D, but he explains it very well and shows the proofs in detail. His tests are fair and he is generous with partial credit for algebra mistakes if your calculus is right. HW is not checked but it is reviewed in class and I recommend doing the assigned and then some to prepare for the tests. No curve.
You will not have your hand held whatsoever in his class. His exams are very balanced, leaning towards harder than easier. He also lectures at the speed of light so keep up. Very easy laboratory work though, if you're in his calc3 class. He is more than willing to help you after class or during office hours though. He has never heard of a curve.
Good professor. He goes SUPER quick however and teaches like he's on too much caffeine. My test Avg was an 82 and I got a C only because the Dept final got to me. Fair tests and does NOT curve. He does prepare you mostly well however. DO HW PROBLEMS AND DEPT FINAL PROBLEMS RELATED TO EACH UNIT! Go to office hours, and learn outside of class too!
His lectures are very fast. I wouldn't mind except that his notes are very disorganized which makes it hard to follow him unless you stop taking notes and just listen to him. His tests are very balanced. He is not a hard grader but he tends to take off points when this are not done his ways even though they are right. He doesn't curve.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!
Very nice professor. He lectures extremely fast so I ended up closing my notepad and just pay attention to him, and it worked! (Read the textbook also) Tests were not hard, very balanced as he has tons of experience and he knows what's important and what's not. He teaches with intuition and geeky humor :) Nice person.
He talks very fast but knows what he is doing. He also answers questions very well and doesn't take shortcuts when doing the work for a question. Make sure to do the homework problems to review for his exams which are not very hard. Overall he is a really nice guy too
He is so kind and nice. He gives you a genuine smile. Aside from that He is an excellent professor.
Your best choice for calc 3. He does a bit fast in lectures but if you ask him questions he will explain the concept in great detail. His exams are fair there are four but he drops your lowest grade. He prepares you for the final and even goes over some of the finals from previous semester at the end. Overall he is a very kind person.
ok here's the deal, he has fast lectures but if u pay attention you can keep up, ask him a question and he will answer it, your grade is in your hand if u study u will get good grades on his exams since they are not very hard. He is a nice person will help you during office hours, again you will have to put in time.
He is a very fast lecturers. If you pay attention, though, then you should be able to catch on to what hes saying. For me, personally, I dont show up to his lectures at all and only show up during exam days. Hes a good dude, but its hard to learn from him. Better to watch Professor Leonard. Having said that, he does care about his students.
Even though he speaks very fast, he is a gem. He always care for his students. After he solves the problem he always ask everyone whether they understand the problem or not. He gives reviews and solves every homework problem before the exam and go over final exams as well. You'll regret you don't take his class. he's one of the very best ccny prof
Professor Shell is actually a good professor. He lectures quickly but will not hesitate to help if you ask. His lectures are easy to understand for the most part and he will give plenty examples similar to what you will study for the test. He gives out sheets that give you practice problems that equip you very well for the tests (he will drop 1/4).
Dr. Shell is so nice and genuinely cares about his students. He never makes anyone feel dumb for asking a question, and he is super helpful in office hours. His exams are fair. Moreover, Dr. Shell's done an amazing job transitioning to an online class and makes practice exams so that the class can be better prepared for the final. 10/10 take him.
Professor Shell is a gem. He is truly interested in seeing his students succeed. The amount of work that has to be covered dictates that he goes fast, but hes always willing to answer every question and clarify any misunderstandings. The only downside is the size of the class, but that is the departments fault, not his.
goes over the material way too fast, he doesn't explain very well in the lecture. When online learning became a thing, he just reads off a PDF. He made me give up on calc II and had to learn it myself. You'd kinda have to actively ask him questions in order to get proper explanations
avoid this professor @ all costs!! for online class especially. he just read off a pdf which made it hard 2 concentrate. also didnt use onenote 2 write out notes like we asked. 100% avoid for online unless u have the dedication 2 take notes after class and selfstudy. get a prof who writes out notes. 4 exams 1 final, no midterm. he is a nice guy tho
Avoid this professor as much as you can, especially for online learning.
Uses pre-written pdf's and underlines it every class for CALCULUS 2. We've gotten into multiple arguments with this guy regarding his teaching method but he didn't change much (maybe bc he just doesn't have the materials needed to teach online). He's probably a good person but not a good Professor for online learning esp for CALCULUS.
Avoid this professor at all cost. He is the worst professor I ever had. He doesn't know how to teach an online calc 2 course. He is also very condescending.
He is not a bad professor by any means. He is nice and very helpful. My problem with him is that he goes pretty quick in his lecture, which is understandable because there is too much topics to cover in this class. His lecture is boring, but i DONT recommend that you not listen to his lecture and look at your phone if you wanna pass.
Please do not take him. He is one of the worst options for Calc 2. A very harsh grader and does not curve AT ALL. The entire class either failed or barely passed. For your own sanity take someone else.
Midterm tests are very heavy, with 60% of your total grade. There is a slight curve of +10 points to your last mid-term exam which is nice. He is not a bad professor, his pdfs and exam reviews are very helpful, just remember that you have to spend time reading them. He is very kind and you should ask more questions about things you don't know.
Professor Shell was a good professor. His exams may be difficult sometimes but are very, very fair and are pretty much based on the homework he assigns (which isn't mandatory - but I strongly suggest you do it) or the reviews he posts (again - make sure you understand the problems!). He's accommodating and is always there for help if you need it.
honestly horrible, doesnt know how to teach basically reads from a pdf and calls it teaching
The worst professor has taken ever compare to other CCNY math professors.
Stay away from his class. He does not teach, just writes on the board quickly and we copy. Does not care about students at all compared to other professors at CCNY.
The worst professor ever, his grade toward students impacts how he has hate toward them. He gives 7 questions on the tests and does not give points for steps, it is either right or wrong.
He is a very harsh grader who makes tons of mistakes, hates his students, and acts care of his grading shows his reality indeed. He is almost 80 years old, not sure how after all age doing this to his students. He fails all students.
His lectures are very fast. He is very disorganized and hard to follow him and just listen to him. if he is the one who does not correct the exams, you will pass because he catches the mistakes and does not catch the right answers. He is an very harsh grader. He tends to take off points when this are not done his way even though they are right.
He does not teach, he memorizes the questions and puts them on the board. Then gave you bad grades and fail all of you on his tests. It seems that his goal is to make his students hate him.
He is a God of failure. You will hate yourself after this class. Expect to fail any of his classes. Listen to the bad reviews because they are honest, disregard the good ones because he wrote them.
Please do not take him. He is one of the worst options for Calc 2. A very harsh grader and does not curve AT ALL. The entire class either failed or barely passed. For your own sanity take someone else.
The worst class ever. He fail people easily, no sympathy.
One of the few professors who will LOVE to fail the entire class easily. Stay away.
He says something and does the opposite. He promised us the exam will be after Thanksgiving, then he said before Thanksgiving. Do not trust anything that he says. He plays mental games and then fails us. Stay away from his class.
We took the third exam with this who called a professor and gave us only 40 minutes to do the exam. He has intentionally failed us. I am blaming myself that I did not drop the course once he said to us that all of his students in the last semester got zero.
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN. He will really damage you and damage the math department's reputation more than it is because of his actions and intentions toward us as students unprofessionally.
The only good thing about this man is that we take attendance for each other and save the metro card since it is a useless class. Worst class ever if you attend it. The majority of us either fail or drop the course or even change the major from engineering to any major else or transfer to another school. CCNY is not a good place for stem majoring.
idk why there's so many negative reviews. i took him last semester, and while it's true that lots failed, i don't think it was because of him. he was very accessible and open for questions. he made us reviews when we asked for them, and made exams very similar to those. he was very generous with partial credit too. use leonard as a source too.
Worst of the worst! We do not know why he loves to fail students easily.
Stay away from him, anyway you will fail and will repeat the course with another professor, but unfortunately, after he damages your GPA.
Shell is way better than some other profs here, if he made a mistake on your exam, he'll gladly fix it, i've seen it happen a few times. He always gave out review sheets for every exam (PLEASE do them) and doesn't mind answering questions people ask in class from reviewing a step to reexplaining the whole problem. I would gladly take him again
If you take Shell, you will definitely lost in any of his classes. He writes the questions and answers on the board without explaining what he is doing. He memorizes math and skips steps, not teaching. I do not recommend taking his class.
He's not the greatest professor out there, but not as demonic as other students say. It is tough to get a C in his class, but it is possible. Do the homework and his review sheets. Ask questions if you don't understand. Go to tutoring. If you fail you only have yourself to blame. Going on RMP to review bomb won't bring your GPA back.
A lot of people will be mad because it is a difficult class. That is a reality you will have to accept. Professor Shell is probably one of the better professors for Calc 2. The grade is all tests so be prepared, he is a fair grader and will look at mistakes or possible points back if you believe it to be there
Do not take this professor. He may be a kind person but his teaching skills and grading are horrendous. Save yourself the misery.
Doesn't teach, just reads what he wrote on the board and makes things more complicated than it has to be. Learned everything online or through reading because you will not learn anything from the lectures.
Shell is one of the decent professors out there. Lectures can be confusing but pay attention in class, and use Leonard as a resource, you will be fine. You need to work hard to get a score in the class. Prof will be available to answer questions in office hours. Quite quick on emails as well. The grading policy is purely based on exams though.
Super generous with partial credit, however grading policy is steep. Lowest of four tests gets dropped, mess up on two, your grade is done. 60% Class tests, 40% Final. Makes a couple of mistakes during the lecture so if you are unfamiliar with the material, it can interfere with your learning. Review is very similar to exams and final.
One of the worst math professors ever! He likes to fail his students and deduct points. He made many mistakes on the board and did not teach the math. He memorized math and jotted it down.
shell is better compared to other math professors here. he is an EXTREMELY lenient grader and he is genuinely a nice guy. dropped one exam and there were no hws but the review sheets were basically exactly the exam. he made the final too so it was not bad at all. only writing bc everyone is giving him low ratings when he isn't that guy at all
Shows a lot of example problems in lecture. Makes mistakes when writing so make sure you take the correct notes. Posts similar practice problems before every exam. Takes attendance but it does not count toward your grade. 4 midterms (1 dropped) + final. No HW (webwork and textbook questions are strongly recommended). He writes the final btw
At first I was given the impression that this professor was horrendous, but actually the opposite. He is a very caring person, he doesn't mind at all that you ask questions and encourages it. He genuinely cares about his students and cares about them learning the material and understanding it thoroughly.
Took him some time ago but honestly one of the better math professors I've had at CCNY. At the time, homework was not mandatory, though I highly recommended doing assigned problems and reviews as they prepare you well for exams. Drill problems as much as you can and you should be fine. Shell was a fair grader, caring, and always open to questions.
Might not explain topics perfectly but is clear about expectations and gives lots of partial credit. Grades are based on 3/4 midterms and final exam, so stay on top of Math 212 homework, posted online, and practice textbook problems to do well. Be consistent, and you'll pass. He also writes the final, so it's a win-win! Overall, a great professor.
Prof Shell is a nice guy, but can be a tough grader. The class is challenging, but he provides helpful review sheets. Unstuck AI was a great study aid for me.
He's a pretty decent professor in teaching cal 2. He does alot of examples and sometimes just tell us to memorize stuff rather than show us where does it derive from. If you self study cal 2 his class will be quite easy to go through. His exams are not hard to do. Do alot of practice and ur good (he drops ur lowest exam grade plus makes the final)
I barely went to his class, did no homework for him (not graded). He grades you 3 out of the 4 mideterms and the final (which he writes). I recommend going to his review sessions of his practice papers for midterm and final. His lectures didnt help me much, self studying did. You gotta put effort and know the content yourself. Its calc 2 so lock in
Super chill guy who's lenient with exam grading. He wont deduct points for small mistakes and such. The review exams he uploads are almost identical to the actual exam, making it easy to pass.
I don't know why this guy gets low ratings. He's one of the best calc 2 profs in the department. If you do the problems on his study guide, you will do good on his tests as well on the final. The people failing here prob didn't study enough and taking it out on rmp. Do you really think Calc 2 is supposed to be easy? (Well it is if u study)
this man is a left handed so he will BODY BLOCK the board and his handwriting is DOG SH- :wilted: . If you want to pass, clutch up his exams and ur ballin
The material was hard for me to understand. He goes fast so write fast and ask questions. He does not grade by the homework but you will need to do them because you will need the practice. If you need extra help just ask him and he will do in-person or online tutoring. He drops the lowest score
If you are listening to the people giving him bad ratings, you're doing yourself a disservice. He is EXTREMELY generous with partial credit, stop complaining about self-study because you cannot learn everything in a lecture, they're too long to absorb everything. Put in effort to self-study & solve practice problems. 4 midterms & a Final.
He doesnt know how to teach and refuses to acknowledge the fact that he stinks.
He only grades the test, going to class is the equivalent of not going to class at all, he block the board when he writes, he goes so fast and makes mistakes so often he confuses himself. I would not recommend. He does make his own test and the practice tests are usually like the one he gives, he's a nice guy but he shouldn't be teaching anymore.
Okay listen to me well. As an actual professor I learned little to nothing from him and barely attended class. But as a tester and grader he is AMAZING. He gives sample exams for the class exams that look exactly like the actual test, making it really easy to pass if you put in the work.
