Niels was a comic relief. Just like Flagstaff. I enjoyed is Shylock voice!
I think he just likes to hear himself speak
Loved the class. Very easy. He was a little odd, but entertaining.
Remember in HS when you had to study poetry and it sucked... yeah, that's because Prof Herold wasn't teaching it. He made poetry enjoyable.
His shakespeare class was boring but yet funny. Easy grader. Funny man

fun class
Herold knows his Shakespeare, and he loves it! Anyone who likes Shakespeare, take his class and not the other teachers. He explains everything you need to know so the tests are no problem. He is also very nice and funny.
300 level Shakespeare was fairly easy. Not a fan of reading out loud, but he does a pretty good job of teaching. Nice guy.
You can tell he really loves teaching. The class is entertaining, and the tangents he goes on are pretty funny.
It is obvious that he loves to teach Shakespeare. He's a bit quirky, but he keeps it interesting.
very fun class, he made Shakespeare very interestnig! He is funny and cares about his students. Tests are easy if you attend and study exactly what he tells you to!!
Talks very slow, lectures are boring, but he can be funny at times. Just read the books, review the passages he gives you and you'll do fine.
I have now had him for two classes and he is the most amazing professor... he is very helpful to students and will meet with students whenever to go over grades. He wants everyone to pass and really cares about Shakespeare. Highly recommend.
If u r easily offended by sexual inuendos,I would suggest NOT taking him because he makes a lot!I found him to be kinda creepy. He loves Shakespeare.Going to class is a must bc he has certain"theories." Sparknotes.com helped!
Professor Harold can be very rude to his students at times, but he does know his Shakespeare very well. He's not very nice or approachable, but if you study for the exams you should do fine in this class. I'm not as high on this Prof as some people are.
This prof was alright. Class was easy and he is VERY knowledgeable in what he teaches, but it was difficult for me to make it through the full 2 hours. Perhaps Renaissance Drama just isn't my cup of tea.
Pretty easy, you'll do A LOT better on exams if you attend class, weird guy, annoying jokes that arent funny
Great class!
Unclear on grading procedures.
Not as easy as I thought. He shows a great interest for Shakespeare. One of the smartest professors I've taken.
Very knowledgable in Shakespeare very tough grader. Has his assistant grade everything so when u approach him w/grades he doesn't know nothing! u can read & understand all the plays & still end up w/a poor grade. Exams are tough & long
Great Prof! Took over the Summer. We read 2 books. Gives a very helpful study guide and is very generous on essays. What is on the guide is on test.Go to class because class discussions can be very interesting. Got a 3.5 & I did not care for Shakespeare!
He knows his subject and has interesting ideas concerning it. Plus, sometimes he'll laugh randomly... and it's the best laugh EVER. He's a bit unapproachable at times, but he's usually pretty helpful.
This man is a genius.
Attn. is obligatory.Good prep. for exams.Good lectures. Thought he was kind of creepy when he was reading the play in character and when he paid TOO MUCH attn. to sexual puns in the play. Recommend.
Very knowledgable in Shakespeare. Makes all the class fun. Exams and quizzes are tough, but if you do the assigned reading they aren't as bad. I would definitely take another class with him.
This guy is VERY smart, yes, but he makes you memorize pointless things. Tests aren't about plot or story, but about memorizing who said what. He lets you know what lines he might test u on, but there's too many. Gives good idea of whats on test, but its still difficult. Hardest class this semester.
A real treat. He made critical theory palatable. No end to his intellect. Willing to engage and entertain ideas from the students. Watching him in his element and in a moment of inspiration is an irreplaceable pleasure. Few can thumb their suspenders and speak with such authority as Prof. Herold.
Good teaching deals more with the application of critical theory rather than mindless details. I found the reading out loud within class to be a waste of time, because with Shakespeare there is so much theory that we certainly could have done something more interesting. Take Warley instead.
an interesting intellect. someone who is genuinely giddy over the bard...
I am a huge fan of Niels'. His enthusiasm for Shakespeare and other Renaissance writers is unparalleled. Yes, he is certainlt a character and not everyone will "get" him, but I sincerely enjoyed and appreciated every moment I spent in his presence (which is why I took four if hos courses haha) and I don't think I've ever met a more intelligent individual. My favorite prof at OU, hands down.
Sure, he likes Shakespeare, but that's about it. He's kind of a creep the way he looks at the pretty girls in class. I think he has a huge ego and is generally fooling everyone.
He knows his stuff but his tests are hard. I has an enormous ego and seems a bit ****ed. When you approach him for help you don't know if you'll get jekle or hyde! He pretends to not know who you are b/c after all he is soooooo busy. The class is a bit of a snoozer.
He's the WORST teacher!.Doesn't answer questions, will put random things on test and nothing that we talked about, is unorganized, and thinks hes the smartest man alive and YOU LEARN NOTHING! I'm not a stupid student whos complaining, i have a 3.8 so believe me.DONT TAKE HIM you will hate yourself for it!! HES A BIG WASTE OF TIME!!

Liked the class. Prof is crazy geeked out by Shakespeare, which was amusing. Tests can be confusing and challenging at times. Lots of seemingly random lectures. class seemed to focus alot on Shakespeare's sexual references. Overall a decent class. Can't complain. Fair grader, adequate work. You get what you put in.
I comletely agree with the previous comment. This guy loves Shakespeare a lot and lectures were very random, but I was never surprised by any of the material on the tests. Not a hard class at all- in fact it was amusing most of the time. I'd reccomend it for a Gen Ed.
Material was a little hard to understand, but he really knows what he is talking about. A lot of reading. Tests are somewhat hard, but if he sees that you are gradually getting better at knowing the material he will grade you a little better.
This professor is a funny man. He is very smart and knows his stuff. Trys to make sure you know the material before the test. The only way to do poorly in the class is if you don't read the material or never show up to class. If you are the token vocal idiot of the class, he will make it known.
By far the worst teacher I have ever taken. He is unorganized, his exams are confusing, he makes it difficult to meet with students and his classes are a waste of time. He sits there, reads the perverse parts of plays that he wants to and then you leave. HE SUCKS!!!
Knowledgeable instructor, but can be unorganized at times. Easy grader, not out to fail people. He must have tenure because he gets away with saying some very very vulgar and ****ed things, many of which have nothing to do with the literature. Not a fan of the Republican Party and lets the class know it.
Though he teaches the subject very well, he is very hard to get to answer a question. I cannot remember a single time this semester where he actually answered a question of mine. He even refused to answer a question I had about the final because he felt "answering the question wasn't worth his time." So yeah, kind of a jerk off at times.
I think he is brilliant. I never had any trouble getting questions answered and he is always available through email if you need to speak with him outside of class. The material could be difficult at times, but he did a very good job teaching it and I enjoyed the class very much.
Herold is awesome. He is completely brilliant, and very helpful outside of class. I am hoping to one day to an independent study with him. Pay attention to the random stuff that he talks about when it comes to the text. It may seem unimportant, but it will come back to haunt you in a test. Overall he has been my favorite professor.
He is very unorganized and rude. He doesn't answer questions, he makes you feel like you are stupid to even ask a question. If he gives you a syllabus..through it away cause he doesn't stick to it. You will not get your tution's worth because of the many days you will have off class. However, he is very knowledgable about the subject.
He's a great guy. Extremely knowledgeable and fascinating. He's pretty funny, too. He does tend to get off topic, but that too, is entertaining. However he is rather unclear about what exactly he expects from his students; he also does seem to test you on the randomest things. But as long as you make a decent effort, you will do well.
I really enjoyed this class. He explains it well, but if you are not following use sparknotes to help, but u do need to read the book. Most quizes and assignments are online. He is an interesting guy and really enjoys what he's teaching and wants you to understand but dont take him if you are easily offended by certain things.
He was very knowledgable about the subject, and had an obvious passion for it. .Too much reading, but was a fair grader on the papers. He does have a tendancy to get sidetracked, and to go a little too far in depth about his topic.
He is amazing. I didn't really get Shakespeare too much before I came to this class, even though I had to read some of his work in HS. Come to class, take notes, and you'll pass because he explains Shakespeare and helps you understand it. Now Definitely take this class for a Gen Ed. It's fun and the prof is very interested in the subject.
WORST! I have a 3.96 GPA & always do above and beyond. But that doesnt matter bc his tests are outrageously silly. We spent 4 weeks on a poem & had a 10 Q test. For 1/2 of our midterm we had to read new stuff & never went over it in class. He doesnt know how to teach or speak "umm.. ____.. umm..haha thats funny" No its not. Every class was torture
Absolutely terrible. We go over and over the same text for weeks. We went over the Faerie Queene line by line by line and he even asked us our opinion on how he should teach it to us. All he gives are dinky little quizzes on moodle but gives very little time to finish them. He's just all over the place! Very frustrating!!!
This class was the biggest waste of time ever. We spent all this time on The Faerie Queen, going over it line by line, with no emphasis on the story, just the symbolism. Then for the final & midterm we read poems that we didn't even discuss. I have had excellent teachers up until now. I could have learned more from a trained monkey.
Do not take this professor if you actually want to learn. He just sit in front of the class and stutters! He doesn't make any sense when he talks. I don't think he has a brain.
I highly recommend taking this professor if you like Shakespeare. He is an extremely intelligent person and one can gain so much just from listening to him. I find his lectures very interesting and his tests aren't too difficult. They are all on moodle and he allots a lot of time to take them. Take this class for the benefit of your intellect!
I've had this professor for two classes...315 and 355. I would recommend taking him for 315 - he is a Shakespeare expert and it shows. I wouldn't take his 355 however, it is clearly not a subject he enjoys teaching and it shows. Grading is sporadic but fairly easy.
He's a funny, knowledgeable guy. Some of his comments can be vulgar, but that just makes it all the more funny. However, he's not clear on what he expects from us. We are 75% through the semester and we still don't have any grades. It can get frustrating.
I thought this class was really interesting. He tries to make the class fun but sometimes it could get boring. attend class everyday and do the study guides.
I have taken him for ENG 105,315 and 464 HE is the best professor i have ever had. I loved all of his classes. He knows Shakespeare very well and is a great teacher. make sure you attend class and read!!!
BEST SHAKESPEARE PROFESSOR EVER!!
Herold LOVES everything about Shakespeare and even has a little golden earring like the one Shakespeare has in his portrait. Don't expect regular assignments or grading or to stick to the syllabus. Reading is imperative to keep up and active in class. Herold can be vulgar and strange, but he really knows his stuff. Take him!
He knows Shakespeare backwards and forwards, tries to stick to the book and syallabus but also makes you purchase some movies. He will try to engage the class but its hard when students just sit there. He is very funny and a fair grader. If you need to take an ENG class at OU take this one you wont be disappointed on any level.
Had for ENG 105. Mandatory attendance. Not too much homework, work through his study guides, they help when it comes to questions that are on the final. Midterms for the plays are online, and are multiple choice with an essay question, and final is open book. He has a really good sense of humor, its very honest and funny. Fair grader, take him.
I really enjoyed this class because it allowed me to explore an area that was new to me. I gained a deeper respect for Shakespeare. Prof. Herold had very useful study guides and Moodle forums that aided in understanding the complex material of Shakespeare's plays.
Professor Herold is one of those few good professors who teaches his classes with passion. Shakespeare is a very complicated writer. Students may understand the first layer of the story-plot, but for the others they can?t. It is because of the ancient language, specific use of language Shakespeare uses for each character, specific verses he uses
Professor Herold teaches Shakespeare with passion. Shakespeare is a very complicated. I would suggest; students take classes with Prof. Herold. He has a key which open a door of a treasure; Shakespeare?s writing, ready for us. Prof. Herold made me love Shakespeare?s plays. He explains Shakes? writing, we watch the plays; read Greenblatt.
I actually enjoyed coming to class. Shakespeare can be tough to understand, but he really helps you get into the storyline and characters by explaining the language in a way everyone can get. Really took into account what people in the class felt better about doing when it came to exams. I hope to have the oppertunity to take him again.
The Syllabus is useless and you never know how you're doing. The attendance policy is unfair and confusing. However, the professor is passionate about the subject, but sometimes these rants can lose most of the class making it hard to know exactly what we're learning about.
Very solid professor,he cares about his students and wants to see them succeed. I never had an interest in Shakespeare before this class, but Herold made it fun and I learned A LOT. His teaching style does take some getting used to (he can be a little wordy sometimes), but he's a good prof. I recommend this class.
God-awful. The man stutters so much that it is difficult to understand the lecture--if you can even call it that. Overall, the class is lacking: not enough emphasis on themes, symbolism, etc. The required class book has a plethora of plays, and of all the plays that the man could have chosen, he chose a play that was not even in the book!!
The worst prof I've ever had and ive had a lot of bad ones. The class is so hard to follow because he spends so much time on one tiny aspect of a Shakespeare piece and the tests will have nothing to do with it !
If there is one professor who has contributed to the quality education I aspire to receive from OU, it's Herold. His entertaining "rants" are pure strategy. He poses a question and then allows you the freedom to answer, forming your own Shakespearian theories in the process. I highly recommend him.
Professor Herold is intelligent and dedicated to his field of study. Its obvious that he appreciates Shakespeare's works. Unfortunately, he, as an educator, is lacking. He does not spend enough time connecting themes, symbolism, and other literary figures.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. The quizzes are entirely based on quotes and have nothing to do with the content of the plays. Grads are always messed up and you never know how you are doing. I am that nerd who loves school and learning but this guy makes me want to file a formal complaint. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!
Herold is an amazing teacher. He is passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. Not just the material but the history of the time surrounding it. He is eccentric and can come off as creepy, but you will realize that he really just loves what he teaches. Highly recommended.
Amazing professor. Truly wants you to do well in this class. Alot of reading but its college. If you cant get atleast an A in this class..you shouldnt be in college at all. He is very quick to respond if you need help and very very nice. TAKE HIM. you wont regret it.
Spent all class just reading Shakespeare and going on crazy rants and then tested on a ton of stuff that was mentioned in passing, but never discussed. Operates on the theory that you know and understand Shakespeare on a very high level. Overall, the class felt completely pointless while I was in it and amazingly difficult during the tests.
This guy is just extremely weird and disrespectful. He is indeed a Shakespeare expert, but then just goes on crazy little unnecessary rants explaining little details. Most of the time he is totally unprepared to his own class. Forces you to buy books that are already in bad condition, thus making the book hard to sell. Pinpoints at theatre majors.
I took this course online and it was alright. I really like Shakespeare so I was looking forward to the class, but the professor was a little weird. His quizzes are hard so you MUST read. Overall, if you do what you're supposed to do, you will get a good grade in this class.
I loved this prof. I took him for 2 different Shakespeare classes and loved him. His teaching style is unique and he is not everyones cup of tea. He is kind of quirky but I thought that was part of his over all charm. Read the material and learn Shakespeare and you will do fine. If you don't do the work, don't expect a good grade, he is not easy.
I took his class online and I loved it. He is very helpful and responds to e-mails fast. Quizzes are a little hard, but not too bad if you actually do the study guides. He doesn't make you do too much work, generally one quiz and forum a week with an essay quiz at the end of the play. Definitely recommend!
I took this online class in the summer, and it was so easy and enjoyable! The professor knows what he is teaching and makes it so entertaining. The homework load was so manageable. I recommend this class as a fulfillment for a Gen Ed class, especially if you like Shakespeare.
Great class. If you are a person who does great but doesn't care too much to go to class, in order to do other things, or just because you're lazy, he is not the professor for you. Attendance will really make your grade.
Professor Herold has a real in-depth understanding of Shakespeare's life and work. If you are interested in really studying his plays, Herold is an excellent choice. There is a lot of reading in the class and you will be expecting to post detailed forum responses. He doesn't require any formal papers though. Participation in his class is important.
You couldn't take a better professor for your 400 level English class. He gives you the full experience of what it is to be in a Graduate level class. Not only that, when you go to write your final big paper he is a great resource. Whatever topic you want to write on, he will recommend all the books you need to get in order to write.
Herold takes some getting used to. He has a very eccentric personality but it is easy to get a good grade as long as you listen to most of what he says. Sometimes he goes on rants about odds and ends, but that is to be expected with theatrical people like him. His class will always keep you awake.
I'm sure there are those who don't like Professor Herold, but personally I would say that I do. He has a tendency to ramble during lectures, he can be unclear when it comes to expectations, etc. Though, at the end of the day he is a very knowledgeable guy and has a passion for his subject matter. Plus, his class isn't that hard.
I would not recommend this course for a gen-ed. The work load is OK & the quizzes are easy if you do the (lengthy) study guides. He is a tough grader & will mark you down for a question that requires you to interpret an Act. If it is not interpreted exactly how he wants, expect a low grade. He also cannot answer a question directly to save his life
I am a BMS major, so "right brained" classes are always a bit harder for me, but this professor really makes the course interesting. As long as you put in the effort, you will get a good grade. Not only do your grades matter, but he definitely takes participation into count - it really got me to a 4.0.
The work in this class takes a decent amount of time, but as long as you do study guides and use his prepping tools, it is really easy. Quizzes are based entirely off of study guides. Participation is key. I was convinced I was getting a 3.7, but due to participation and my notable efforts, I got a 4.0! Make yourself stand out!
Do NOT take this class. If you miss ONE class your grade decreases automatically. Doesen't do the usual "can have up to 3 absensces". Participation matters& your grade will decrease if you don't constantly participate. RUDE professor, ALWAYS caling students out. If you forget ur book, you are marked absent on attendance. A lot of quizzes on books!!
Harold is absolutely amazing. The course is text centered therefore you are required to purchase the material and read what's asked. As long as you work on his study guides you will do great. He's very knowledgeable of Shakespeare and his time. Responds quickly to emails. He is very excentric and makes time go by quickly. Must attend regularly.
This was my favorite class this semester! Professor Herold is a genius with the material and he really wants his students to succeed and feel smart too. While he does make you work for it if you follow his instructions exactly you'll defiantly get and A. However if you don't he does take it personally as long as you do your work he will respect you
I absolutely LOVE Herold! He kept the class interesting and constantly looked for new ways to get participation. Very easy, just show up to class and pay attention and you should get a 4.0! I looked forward to going to his class and he always makes it fun in his class, I highly recommend this professor above the others!
Prof. Herold is one of the most genuine people I've had the pleasure of meeting! His class is very relaxing and easy as long as you keep up with the reading. He truly cares about every student in the classroom and wants everyone to succeed.
this professor is not good at all. attendance is mandatory, grade goes down after missing one class. not clear when he speaks, gets off topic a lot. tough class, you really have to work for it. Quizzes are hard.
Niels is one of the best professors that Oakland University offers. He is hilarious if you are a fan of mildly erotic humor. Be careful, however; if you are a female because he may at times make very sexual remarks and focuses on the sexual aspects of Shakespeare. Overall nice guy, but a bit of an old perv.
Professor Herold is very chill; his lectures are very funny and to the point. In the beginning of the semester he tells you that you will have "midterms" for each of the 4 Shakespeare plays through the course. You can basically go through the text at your own pace as long as you pay attention to the lectures and do the moodle quizzes for each act.
Professor Herold was very all over the place. He rarely was clear with his grading criteria and I was left confused as to what was going on in the class multiple times. His lectures were very boring and off topic. I would not recommend him to anybody.
Acts friendly enough in class only to be very unfriendly in person. Has a humiliating policy where he wants to see your notebook at the end of the semester to make sure you were paying attention. Loudly slurps his coffee in between sentences. If you want to pay thousands to be disrespected and treated like a child, then take his class
He's very eccentric and very passionate about Shakespeare. However, i felt like the lectures were a waste of time because he spent many class periods rambling/ranting about things that were not important. If attendance wasn't worth a grade, I probably would've never showed up to class. I learned more by reading and doing the study guides by myself.
Mr. Herold is hilarious, which really makes him stand out amongst the real loons I've had in other classes. In a very good way. Show up to every class and you will be prepared for the exams, read the text and you will be prepared. And maybe you might learn something too. Or maybe you'll laugh. Or maybe... well, the point is, he's good.
Unorganized, never has Moodle exams and forums ready when he says he will, goes on pointless rants and tangents, makes unnecessary sexual jokes, and overall just a pointless class and waste of money. Do not take this professor.
Although he claims to have been teaching online for years, the Moodle page is quite unorganized. It's filled with optional readings/videos mixed with required reading. Quite inflexible with times (difficult to participate in optional Zoom and chat room if you have a job). The quizzes are easy and he lets you retake some of them for higher grades.
If you're looking for an easy literature general education requirement, this is not the class to take. He is extremely passionate about Shakespeare, however the course is way too hard for A beginner Shakespeare course. For reference, I am a straight A principals list student & almost done with my degree. This class was harder than it should be.
Class included a lot of reading obviously since it was an English class, and as long as you did the reading you are sure to do well in the class. The discussion forums are also fairly easy and he is a very lenient grader (especially on the essays for the exams). Overall, as long as you read and pay attention you will be fine. He is super nice.
Probably the worst professor Ive ever had especially for a Gen ed class. I am a senior taking nursing classes that are easier than this class and its a Gen ed. I understand that hes passionate about Shakespeare but not everybody understands it at the level he does. The way he writes quiz questions is like in his own language. Very disorganized.
