Very disorganized. 1) Made mistakes when announcing group assignment (worth 30%). 2) Announced huge changes to assignment details only two weeks prior in a tiny, easily missed announcement. 3) Didn't release/ have a rubric for the big group assignment. 4) Marks very hard for his 3 labs (worth 10% each; avg 6.5/10) 5) Minimal feedback
I don't recommend taking this course. He is very disorganized and rarely puts out announcements to keep students up to date with changes. The final is 2 weeks away yet he hasn't posted any information about it. Honestly professors should be thinking twice about how their actions affect students especially during the most stressful time of the year.
I would personally not recommend taking this course. The Professor seems not even trying to cooperate with students. No exam info just two weeks left. He did not give rubric on the group project which he was expecting students to guess what he wants. The only thing he does is posting videos every week and thats it.
Very unclear and does not listen to any relevant concerns students may have.
While the course is quite simple and somewhat easy to do well in Nigel Blamey is not the best instructor and the course does not feel like a university course. Dr. Blamey did not communicate well throughout the course and often gave little or no instructions on labs and final assignments.
Condescending in his announcements to the class. No rubric for the 20 page paper. TAs had no idea what was going on. Assigns labs at the very last minute with only instructions, no rubric. Quizzes were not from the lecture notes. Some of the lectures seemed to be taken from other professors. Told us the exam format less than a week in advance.
I found the course was interesting, but there was not sufficient communication between students, Dr. Blamey and the TAs. Little information was relayed regarding the big paper, and labs were sometimes incorrectly marked due to lack of communication. Quizzes were tricky, not all info was taught that was on them. Put in effort and you will do well.
Such an awful course your forced to memorize so much stuff in small amounts if time and the prof hates responding to emails and loathes zoom meetings. He will set one up 15 minutes before its scheduled then be mad if you show up. Hes rude, super unorganized, and makes it obviousness doesnt want to be bothered by students questions.
Blamey is a very confusing prof. Did not have his syllabus available all semester so we did not know how much anything was worth. He is very hard to talk to one on one. Also did not give us an outline or rubric for what our final presentation should encompass. I think he grades pretty fairly.
The professor does not care about his students and complains when they email him. His responses are often rude, belittling and disorganized. He does not use rubrics, the OWL site has old and new material getting mixed together, TAs and students are confused. Overall inconsiderate professor who is only interested in his own research, not the student
Reuses lectures from years ago that don't even have the same course code and does not elaborate or provide any background information on material so your notes will make no sense. No rubrics are provided but he will sometimes give vague outlines of assignments. Complains about emails and technical difficulties almost every week.
Nigel was a lazy and hands-off teacher. Online, we had zero lectures and zero verbal explanations. Each unit was a series of very long, wordy readings which constituted as a "textbook." It was hard to tell what to study from the readings as they had pages of insignificant details, and he only tests a few very specific items/concepts.
I found him easy to understand and keen to help. Don't believe those taking ES2232 as they assume that that class is easy..... they are probably U/G students who can't cut it. The one who says there is no syllabus is lying as all classes have the syllabus posted by the first day. The prof is nice and knowledgeable.
Nigel's tests and labs were marked very fairly and gave lots of options. Test questions allowed for a lot of student choice. As long as you attend lectures then you will be well set for the tests and labs, I was never stressed about my marks. I liked Nigels teaching style, he is fast paced and very easy to approach and communicate with.
The most unorganized professor I have ever had in the 4y I have been at Western. The quality of learning was terrible, used lecture videos that weren't even titled our course code.Very overwhelming course due to absolutely no organization being taken into consideration.Western needs to do better. Stay away from this course. TAs were also lost.
2+ differing due dates on the course site for labs, date confirmed only days before due date, lab details changed day before due date forcing us to alter and resubmit, 12pm on day of midterm says proctoring difficulties may cause test to be postponed 2 weeks - will let us know at 4pm (3hrs before test), snarky forum responses to students.
Do not take this class.
scored 100% on a lab but the grade was rounded down to 85% because "the TAs made the lab too easy"
Contender for the worst professor in the western hemisphere. Confusing due dates, inconsistent marking scheme, rude, zero respect for his students, and illiterate when it comes to use of technology. Avoid his classes at any cost.
Do not recommend
This guy is the worst professor a student can have. He does not know anything about technology and blames his students for his mistakes. He's extremely rude when he replies to others. I know you think this class is easy but beware this guy will make your life a living hell. DO NOT take his classes.
worst prof i've ever had in my life and that says a lot cause i've had BAD profs. has no idea how technology works. 90% of the lectures are >3 years old. day of the final, trying to review: some of the videos have been taken down or switched for the wrong video. extremely rude and disrespectful to students. do yourself a favour and never take him.
The worst professor I have ever encountered. He doesn't reply to emails and has very little patience with students. He even doesn't know how to use OWL, and the exam questions are incredibly detailed and difficult. The only positive aspect of this course is the low workload. I strongly advise against taking any classes with this professor.
One of the worst profs I've ever had, super unresponsive, rude to students, every other announcement was him blaming OWL for his problems. Lecture videos suck, labs made no sense at times, overall, very poorly organized course which took way too much time and led to too much frustration solely because of this prof, 10/10 would not recommend.
Professor Blamey was often unhelpful and left TA's with little to work with. He would send emails saying he is leaving for several days multiple times throughout the semester leaving both students and TAs in the dust. Considering this was an online course, that is not acceptable. He was often unhelpful and would suggest avoiding his courses.
Great professor if you get to know him. Genuine guy who wants his students to succeed. He won't make you feel stupid if you ask dumb questions. Very reasonable guy, just not super great with tech.
At the end of the day, you will get the mark you deserve in this class. Funny prof with lots of amazing life experience and stories. Knows so many languages and will always try to speak to you in your native language if you tell him what it is. Very nice prof, but a tad unorganized.
Amazing life experiences which he brings to the classroom. Probably the most valuable class that I have taken. Wants his students to succeed.
Prof. Blimey was amazing. I don't what the others are talking about.
He's probably the best professor I have had. I never realized he was such a awesome guitarist.
Really knows how to handle online courses. Would take more courses from him if available. Keeps up to date with latest space news.
The prof went out of his way to get eclipse glasses for us so that we could see the eclipse. This is much more than other profs would do and I got to see the eclipse in total. What an experience. His does much more for his students than other do at Western. I am not in science but would like to take another class from him.
This was my first science course and I enjoyed it. The material was interesting and both Dr Blamey and his TAs were helpful. Two thumbs up!
There were about 300 students in 2232 when I took it and he really inspired me. Really good at running an online course. I am thinking of changing my major now to earth science.
Ignore the students from social studies, they find science tough. The prof goes out of his way to help students and the course is easy for those of us in science.
Best course that I ever took outside my major. I learned a lot. Prof is responsive and helpful. Can I change to Earth Science?
Nigel is an outstanding lecturer and passionate about ore deposits. His background understanding is exceptional and he shares his years of experience with the class. I found his grading fair and he provides feedback so that one knows where to improve. He is by far the best lecturer that I have had at Western.
The course is still running but the prof has been great. I want to change to Planetary Science thanks to the course content and the prof.
OWL running in Brightspace is a bad decision. The prof and TAs are doing their best but Brightspace is the issue; not their fault.
I got over 80% for the midterm and those who failed have rushed to this site to complain. The midterm was open book. The failures did not study and blame the professor for their low grade. If you don't study, you won't get the grades.
Dr Blaney is helpful and responsive but the problem is Brightspace.
Prof and TA were great. Brightspace was painful.
He was inspirational to me. Has great stories of his experiences as a real geologist. Pleased to hear that he is going to teach the 4th year course that builds on this: Geochemistry of Hydrothermal Deposits. I am ready to sign up.
The professor is helpful and fair. The course would probably be better run in sakai instead of brightspace. I would like to take another course from Dr Blamey.
Awesome course by a prof who cares about the students.
The course was great and gave me a complete new insight into astronomy. The professor and the TAs were very helpful. Although I am in another faculty, I would like to take another course from Prof. Blamey.
Dont believe the students from 2232G in winter 2023. The problems were caused by exam central, not the prof. My experience in 1086 was inspirational. It was run in Brightspace and went smoothly. TAs and prof were very helpful.
I really enjoyed this course. The prof and TAs were responsive to e-mail and I learned a lot. My academic councillor tells me that he also teaches 2232 and I am enrolling for it.
I learned so much from Prof Blamey. His course was great and well structured. It is profs like him that inspire me to change major and join geology.
I loved the course and learned so much. The professor was very knowledgeable, helpful, and well organized. The TA was very helpful as well.
One of the most helpful profs at Western. He respects the students and is interested in our success at university. More profs should be like him.
Prof Blamey is very proactive and encouraging. He notified the class that the northern lights would be visible and we went out to see it. Fantastic. We would never have known if it were not for him.
He's helpful unlike some other profs. Lots of readings but its fascinating and easy to read. He really knows how to deliver online courses and manage big classes.
Knows his topic. Great course for non science students.
I really like this course and the professor is helpful. He has set it up very well and I keep up to date on a weekly basis thanks to his structure. Each time I email him or the TA they respond and give accurate feedback.
The professor is helpful and helps you find the answers. My TA was also helpful and graded fairly. He showed me where I was going wrong so that I could do better.
He knows the topic well. No surprises and straight shooter. I would like to take an in person class from him. I hear from those taking in person classes that he is a great teacher in the classroom.
Best prof that I have had at Western. He encourages us to do better and connects the dots so that we see the big picture. As a prof I rate him A+.
This professor understands how to deliver an online class and I learned so much about the solar system. Grading was fair and the TA was helpful. I would like to change my majors and go into planetary science for the fall semester. The course delivered by Prof Blamey is inspiring.
Best professor that I had at Western. Nigel makes you feel welcome and included. He is always present for the students and I felt relaxed with him. He deserves 6/5.
I took this course because I needed a science credit. Now I am hooked. This is the best online course I've taken. The professor is very helpful and responsive. No profs as western are as good as prof blamey at online.
Terrible experience despite getting a good grade, Cant even be bothered recording lectures so the material is literally just reading pdfs. Quizzes for some reason do not have autosubmit at deadline and was never disclosed to class. Imagine taking a course and you dont even hear the professor's voice one time. What a joke.
The entire course is memorizing pdfs
great course if you want to do nothing but read pdfs and ctrl f
dont take for ur own good
The professor does not care about his students and complains when they email him. His responses are often rude, belittling and disorganized. He does not use rubrics
The entire course is reading text documents copied from textbooks. Mind numbing course, only reason anyone takes it is because its a notorious easy 4.0
Dr. Blamey is one of the best profs I have had at Western! He is a very fair marker, and really wants students to understand the material instead of just memorizing. I have learnt a lot from him and am glad I get to have him as a prof again.
No course that I have taken has prepared me for grad school as much as this course. Nigel helps you understand geochemistry. Best course I ever took from the best prof.
He really knows his geochemistry. He absolutely opened my eyes. Don't pay attention to those from 2232 as they don;t know him at all.
Wow. Dr Blamey really opened my eyes. I feel that I am now prepared for grade school. He would be great teaching more grad courses.
Clear lectures and always available if you miss a lecture. Really smart prof who showed me the links of geochemistry. He is able to get through to all the students.
I learned a lot from him. I would take another class from him if I could.
I wish that I had known about this course earlier. The prof has this set up well and the participation photo got me outside the city. I then saw a shooting star for the first time. Thanks.
I am enrolled in ES2206A. Dr Flemming is on sabbatical and Dr Blamey is teaching the course. Replacement instructors often do not know the material well whereas Dr Blamey really knows the topic and puts it across well. He also stays late for an extra lab session to help us. He really cares about our education.
Dr. Nigel made time for me during reading week to answer my questions. I thought that he was just another prof but found that he really knows his online delivering. He's by far the best prof that I have had for online and he's really helpful.
Nigel goes out of his way to help us. The Wednesday evening lab goes until 9PM and he is there all the time. Lectures are clear and he likes participation.
Such a great prof. He really makes an effort to help each student and goes out of his way to make sure we understand the content. He comes to every lab session even though not required and answers the hundreds of question students ask him with amazing patience. Although the content is difficult he explains it in such a clear easy way.
This became my most enjoyable class thanks to Nigel. He has always been available outside class if you donnot understand something and he would then take us to the lab and explain things on the board. He listens to what you say and gets us to think and guides us to the answer. His explanations are clear. He attended every lab including evenings.
This was his first time teaching this course, and the course is not designed by him, so I cannot judge him based on that because I found this course structured poorly; the lab exam was absolute hell, but as a professor he is very helpful and works hard to help you succeed despite the difficulty of the course content.
course not bad - idrk abt prof cuz it was online and you basically had to everything yourself but i will say it's really hard to fail. def a bird course
The prof gave me good advice to study for the final exam and I got over 90%. He is approachable and really knows how to deliver a online course. Participaton photo was fun and something different.
Nigel taught the course for another prof and he was very good. My feedback is not about him but the heavy workload for the course which should be split into 2 courses. I felt welcome in his class and could approach him at any time to seek an answer to material that I did not understand. Great teacher.
Dr. Blamey is very caring and passionate about students learning the contents. He is very accessible outside classes and stays the entire time during all labs. He is very approachable and will re explain any confusing topics.
