I would recommend avoidance if possible, this class is almost impossible to enjoy and has a 10-15 page paper without an possible guidance about what to do. He seems like a nice enough guy, but not a great teacher.
I hate this guy! He covers two chapters a week and sources. Lectures the whole damn time. When you ask him for help, he jut makes you feel stupid by askin question u don't know the answer to. I would avoid his class.
This guy is the worst teacher ever all he does is lecture and he makes you read 2 chapters a week plus source reading. I would advise everyone not to take this class, he is knowledgable but that does not help. He expects everyone to be able to write a 5 page paper on things that dont even relate.
dull lectures, but helpful if you go into his office and ask questions. you pretty much have to beat it out of him though
LECTURES ARE BORING IF YOU MANAGE TO EVEN STAY AWAKE. HE SPENDS THE ENTIRE CLASS TIME TALKING TO THE CEILING AND WON'T LOOK AT YOU. HIS TESTS ARE HELLA RETARDED AND REDICULOUS TO STUDY FOR AND THE NOTES ARE HORRIBLE. CAN'T ANSWER QUESTIONS, AND THE PAPERS HE MAKES YOU WRITE ARE IRRELEVANT.
wasnt a bad teacher, he stares at the ceiling and his tests arent easy, but he gives you a general idea of what to study. he grades the papers hard. subject is kinda dull if you dont like history. as long as you read the book you will be fine, some of the lectures are vague.
Raab rules! His class is kind of hard but he is probably the coolest human to ever grace the planet with his presence
He is the worst teacher ever. Blah, blah, blah is all you hear. He is very dull and makes class incredibly boring. I will NEVER take him again!
Raab is very intelligent and I learned the most from the lectures. I never read the book, He assigns two 5 page papers which are not graded that harsh. He is a very nice guy that loves what he teaches. I would recommend him.
Intimidating at first, but not that bad. I would look for easier alternatives but if you have no choice, he won't be too much of ap problem. Only thing is he covers two chapters a week, and his essay topics are kind of weird. In the end though, not too tough
He is a fascinating backgorund and experiences, adn really knows his material. Although his tests are impossible, doesn't seem to really believe to a thorough study guide, and I was not up for the challange. I had to drop him.
He will help you in anyway he can if you have questions. But you have to make the effort to see him, just like every other professor you will encounter in life. He has an effective study guide for the midterm and final. The papers make you think outside of the box and challenge you. Good class.
Don't take his class. The two papers you do in his class are irrelevant and the tests are all short answer/essay format. The lectures put me to sleep and b/c he didn't take roll, I hardly showed up. Unless you like participating and kissing butt, don't take this class.
Yuck.this class is ridiculous.he covers two capters a week, his in-class notes are horrible, and he is not helpful at all.he knows his material well ,but he ends to ramble.i'd suggest another alternative.his class is a bit hard and hella boring.i cut his class all the time and i never used to do that
This class is so BORING. If you can stay awake, you deserve a medal. His notes are the worse notes I have ever seen. He knows the material but the class sucks. He wants you to participate and he calls on you even though he knows that you don't know the anwser. Test are easy, everything else is hard.
bad class! heavily based on reading, bad lecture notes, does not make eye contact, constantly asks question after question even tho ENTIRE class does not know the answer. requires a 10-15pg paper w/15 sources, if you're not a HIST major, don't take this class! LBST people, try to get someone else!!
Very interesting, hard, but the class is rewarding. Raab is a very interesting, cool, nice guy.
he's a nice guy, lecture are sort of dry, every once and awhile makes a funny comment, knows his stuff, likes his ID's for tests and theres lots of reading due each week out of two books
Got a B in the class. Midterm and final weren't too bad, but the two papers we do are kind of rough. I thought the class got more tolerable as time went on. It really helped to do the reading, but there was SO MUCH that it takes A LOT of work to get it all done and I was always several chapters behind. Could have been a more interesting subject.
Raab's a decent guy... I like history so I think I enjoyed his class more than others... his tests arn't too bad but his papers almost killed me and he's not too good about checking his email :P
excellent. knows his stuff. not easy. very willing to help.
Dr. Raab is a funny Canadian who has a strong bond with Russian history. His notes made in class help, attendence is vital for getting a good grade. He is VERY helpful during office hours. (I daydream often, so found this useful after classes). There are 2 5-page papers and 6-write-whatever-he-doesn't-read-them homework assigs the entire class!
This class is full of bull $#!t. He doesn't know what he is doing. His lectures don't help, he ask questions instead of answering them. Just a piece of warning if this is part of your core DON'T CHOOSE THIS ****.
Easiest class ever. doesnt require attendance, I went maybe 3 times a month and I got an A- in the class. Raab is also just the man. take this class if your looking for an easy core.
i agree, this class is bull$*#! He expects two 5 pg papers, six 2 pg. essay responses and daily discussions, plus TONS of reading. He made me hate history for good. don't take him. save urselves!
Raab is an easy grader, and the workload is light. But he won't make you love history. If you're not an idiot, you will get a good grade.
keeps class pretty interesting, not hard at all if you know your history. midterm, final, 2 papers.
He a canadian who lectures mostly through class. He has two papers, a midterm and final. He expects alot of reading and his papers requier much reading also.
not sure about these other posts. I couldn't ask for a better professor for history. He is truly amazing.

He's great teacher. He assigns a lot of reading, but don't read it!; just skim through it. He has 1 midterm, 1 final, 2 papers, and 6 discussion questions. The midterm and final are essay type, so if you are a good writer, you'll do well in the class. The readings for the 2 essays are kind of hard, but he grades very easy.
He is an amazing teacher who really knows his stuff. He understands not everyone loves history, and tries his best to make it interesting. He especially knows a lot about Russian history.
Great Teacher, really helpful. Loves what he teaches, more than willing to help. Tests and papers are more than fair.
Good guy. Speak up on first day and he'll make the effort to put your name to your face for the rest of the semester, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on the extent of your knowledge. Readings are extensive. But then again I never read....haha
he will call on you randomly but if u have a basic sense of history u won't embarrass yourself too bad. he's a good teacher and will try hard to get u to relate to the material, take him if you can recognize historical concepts and you'll be alright
raab is a good guy, probably the best history teach ive had...if you pay attention, participate in class, and go see him in office hours you will be fine...i knew nothin more than high school history and i got a B no problem...for history raab is ur man
good teacher calls on you randomly, but doesn't get upset if you have no idea of the anwser. really engages people in the learning process
Prof. Raab is such a great guy, hes a fair grader, listens to the students, engages the students in his lectures, truly cares what the students have to say. His exams make sure students have a grasp on the material and the papers do the same. No busy work, very direct, and if you take a course by him you will have a good understanding of the topic.
Very boring classes, hard to keep track and pay attention. I found myself doodling a lot. Keep up with readings! That is very important! I fell behind and it isnt a pretty sight! 2 papers, and 6 weekly questions. Relatively easy papers and assignments
This was a great class that I always looked forward to gong to. He is very nice, a good lecturer, and clearly interested in his topic. He likes talking to students and will always help you when you need it. You should do the reading, he doesn't cover everything in class, but his class is very good!
Totally boring professor--I didn't like history before I took it and he pretty much confirmed it for me. He's a nice guy but not made for teaching. If you aren't a fan of history you should choose someone else--he's not necessarily hard, just super boring
exams are hard. you never know what will come out for the in class essays so basically you have to read the whole book. i used to hate history but prof raab and his class made me fall in love with the subject!his lectures are very interesting and encouraged you to find out more about the subject.
Very dedicated professor, always there to help and loves teaching as well as his students. I learned a lot from him and I'm not going to say its easy but it was definetly worth it. I recommend this class and Raab to be the one teaching it.
Raab is a great guy. He keeps class interesting. you don't really need to do the reading, but you will get brownie points if you speak up in class. Not a terribly hard grader.
I really enjoyed this class. Raab kept it interesting and I was rarely bored. Definitely take this class!!!
best history teacher i've ever had! raab is sooo clear and the nicest man! definitly take this class!
Professor Raab is such a nice man. He is always willing to help and answer any questions you may have. His lectures cover all the material that is on the mid-term and there are only two papers and a total of 6 discussion questions that must be completed by the end of the semester. He really makes an effort to get to know his students!
Prof. Raab was an excellent professor. He is so engaging because he absolutely loves his subject matter. He is so helpful and easy to approach in office hours and is always willing to go above and beyond to help students catch up or understand. Professor Raab isn't an easy A, but it is definitely attainable with some hard work.
Highly recommend taking his class! He clearly loves his subject, his lectures are easy to understand, and he is helpful. You must participate in class because he calls on students randomly and there are weekly discussions. However, there is not a lot of assigned work. Overall, it will not be hard to get a B but you must really work for the A.
He's. the. best. History might not be your thing but he's so entertaining and he is very engaging. Obviously loves history and makes it a great course. He calls on people randomly and gets excited if you know what you're talking about.
Awesome professor. If you need to take this core, definitely take Raab. He's very passionate about his subject and is entertaining in class. Participation in class is necessary. Grades fairly easy on papers. Great class.
Professor Raab is great. He is really passionate and clearly loves what he does. There is never homework, just discussion questions every other week, a midterm, a final, and 2 papers. I would definitely recommend him as a professor. It's definitely not an easy A, but if you participate and study you will do well.
Really fun/funny teacher, keeps class interested and laughing. Not the easiest work load but if you try you're guaranteed to leave the class having learned a lot. No textbook = AWESOME, attendance not mandatory but helpful to attend lectures. TAKE HIM!
Dr. Raab is a very knowledgeable, clear and enjoyable professor. He has a sense of humor while challenging you to know the material. A lot of teachers who teach required courses either think they are above the material or spoon-feed you answers; Dr. Raab is clearly passionate about history and has no attitude about teaching 101.
He's a very good professor, lectures are interesting, he says something crazy every class. Reading is assigned but not checked other than for 6 weeks of questions and answers, midterm/final are based on book and only partly on lecture.
Nigel is absolutely ridiculous. I actually tried in this class (which is pathetic since it was a 100 class) and ended up with a B in everything. Two papers, discussion sheets (which mean nothing, really), and a midterm/final. I would say that a B isn't a big deal if I didn't try, but usually when I don't try I end up with a B. Never answers emails.
Raab is a phenomenal teacher. He explains everything sequentially and makes themes and connections very clear. I had to work hard to get a B but I learned a lot, really enjoyed the class, and actually became more interested in Russian history, his specialty. Definitely recommend taking him but you have to be willing to work hard.
Not an easy class but if you take notes and pay attention to lectures you will do fine. He has weekly summaries but you only have to do 6 total for the semester. The midterm and final basically determine your grade but he's very helpful in explaining things that can be confusing! You only really need the textbook to look up vocab terms for tests.
Not fun or easy
Great personality, sense of humor, and very approachable. Don't fall behind on the lectures or the reading. He's a hard grader, but gives very reasonable assignments and exam questions. The hard part of exams though is answering all the questions in the hour or two you have. I would recommend him if you want to learn about Russian history!
reading every night, lectures are discussions, two papers the whole year, no tests. very easy to follow, but can get boring. as long as you participate you are golden
Very nice over all. 2 tests, midterm and final, 10 page paper, weekly readings, 1 presentation on a reading. Take good notes and ask questions. Reading were tough so you might have to read more than once. Helpful if you ask. Grades on a curve, but don't push your luck. He looks for a lot of detail on tests, especially essays. READ, READ, READ!
Raab is such a great professor, super passionate and knows so much about the material he teaches. Class is lecture-heavy but he includes funny stories and makes it interesting. One of my absolute favorite professors at LMU and the reason I picked up a history minor--take him if you get the chance!
Just don't. 6 2 page papers throughout the semester, 2 10 minute presentations, 1 6 page midterm, and 1 12 page final. Boring and pointless reading every night followed by hour long discussions in class that you have to participate in to get a decent grade.
Requires eight 2 page papers along with an 8 page paper, a midterm and a final.
Great professor. Funny guy who cares about what he does and is very helpful outside of class. He give lots of reading which is not entirely mandatory but is mostly a good idea to do. Lots of writing but other than the final is all mostly easy.
12 page paper, 6 2 page papers, and a 5 papers. 1-2 hours of reading per class. A lot of work for a first year seminar, not impossible, but more work than every other FYS.
8 critical responses (in total for the entire semester), 2 page critical summary reports every week but as long as it sums up to 8 throughout the semester. Too much readings to do.
Professor Raab is a great professor. He makes history extremely interesting and is insanely smart. He is very open to answering all your questions and has answers for almost everything. He is a tough grader and does require a lot of reading and writing, but he is clear on what he wants from you. I would take him again for his charisma and knowledge
Really enjoyed this class. Learned so much. He's more than just a great guy!
Hes a sweet guy but is a tough grader. I attended the majority of the classes and took notes in every class and felt like getting an A is impossible. He gave us 8 2-page essays to do and one 8-page essay to do over a film. There was a midterm and exam. Ur grade depends on the midterm and exam more than anything else.
Gives the best lectures, and really helps students understand the subject. However, he is a very tough grader so it is hard to get an A. Would recommend if you want to learn something, but not if you are looking for an easy class.
Great overall professor. learned a lot in his class and got a lot better at writing
Lots of discussions and seminars. A tough grader but it made be way better at writing than I was before. Midterm exam was not that bad and the final was a research paper.
Super writing heavy class, but I learned a lot. His lectures were always engaging even when the subject matter wasn't. Lots of notes though! Tests were pretty fair as long as you study, as he gave the vocab words/ similar questions to us beforehand. Also a really funny and chill guy. Definitely recommend.
Professor Raab is by far one of my favorite Professors at LMU. He is passionate about what he teaches and it is infectious. He assigns lots to read, but you can skim them as long as you understand the material and take decent notes. Cracks jokes and is open to feedback and comments from the class. The lectures are very conversational. Take him!!!
He's a good teacher. He's nice and knows a lot about the subject matter. However, he gave such long readings that barely anyone in the class did them because you would start, see its 40 pages and just skip it. Bad for learning. Midterm and final paper were well assigned and his feedback on my final paper was helpful. He's pretty good, not great.
The readings are way too long-- most students didn't read, so the class discussions were really quiet and confusing. Also, the final assignment was very exhausting (2 presentations and a final paper). If you don't have ample free time, I don't recommend taking this course.
He's very nice and understanding but oh my GOD those reading were so long and boring they were almost impossible to read. Few actually read them because of this. It took all of the excitement out of the material. But again he's so nice and understanding, It's just the discussions are all about the readings so with bad readings its hard to like it.
Nigel is an icon. Though theres a lot of reading, you can get by by skimming it in class. As long as you participate, its all good. Nigel is super kind and passionate. I wish I could take more of his classes
hes amazing.
It's an interesting class if you skim readings and listen/take notes in class. Not a harsh grader just listen to his advice. Only class I didn't dread going to this semester even though it was an 8am. Highly recommend!
I cannot say enough positive things about professor Raab. Hands down my favorite teacher in my entire college experience. Not a tough grader at all, and the lectures are extremely interesting. He makes jokes a lot and overall he is just an extremely kind and positive person. Take him I promise you won't regret it. Best teacher ever!
Professor Raab was one of the sweetest and kindest teachers that I have encountered. This is from his witty jokes, to his sophistication, intelligence, and more. Do not hesitate to take his course. He deserves a raise at LMU. Thank you. Sinde'
I was not excited to take a history course but he made the class very enjoyable, considering its lecture based. The workload is nothing extreme, and as long as you are taking notes in lecture you will be prepared. Very funny guy and the first class I actually enjoyed at LMU. Weekly 1 page reflections and papers for midterm/final. Would recommend!
He is very flexible - will accommodate you as long as you're transparent. Lectures every day, read the materials assigned, presentations, papers, and precis writing assignments.
I took Prof. Raab for FYS 1000 History of Natural Disasters and I LOVED the class. It was heavy on readings to do before class but you could get by without doing them. Prof Raab is a very interesting person with a knowledge on a variety of historical aspects (specialist in russian history) and he brings that to every lecture.
The hardest class I have taken at university so far. Over a hundred pages of dense historical reading every week that you HAVE to do. Chews out students who fall behind even for a moment. Full of knowledge and teaches great material though. If you love history and are ready to work, take the class, if not, DONT.
The toughest grader I had at LMU but a BRILLIANT professor. Lots of work so get ready but he teaches History of Russian Foreign Policy extremely well. He worked with me and was understanding when I couldn't register for the class for the first 8 weeks. Great class, just know it's a challenge!
I would not take him again. He's nice, but he's a tough grader and gives you wayyyy too many papers for an elective class.
I loved this class. I don't know what people are saying about how there are "too many papers." They were short and easy, and he gave us lots of time. I learned so much in this class; he tries to get everyone involved in the convos. If I could take another class of his, I would! He is an excellent professor. His teaching style is fantastic.
This class is good if you need to fill up your schedule, BUT if you don't read or pay attention during lecture your screwed for the midterm and maybe the final too. Midterm is just like your weekly reading reflections but without the book and he expects you to know the order of events that you go over in class. There is a Review the day before!
Classes are entirely lecture-based on heavy reading (which you can get away with not doing). 4 small papers, 1 large paper, a midterm, and a final. No clear attendance policy but you're screwed on the exams if you didn't take notes on the lectures. Overall Dr. Raab is a caring and funny prof and makes history interesting. Harsh grader, though.
The class is extremely lecture heavy. All the notes during class are written down on the board by him as he speaks about the topic. 4 reading reflections (2 before midterm). Midterm and Final are EXACTLY like the reflections except he gives you the questions to answer. You're screwed if you either 1 you don't read or 2 you do take notes.
Awesome guy! Was super nice and really entertaining lectures. There's like 4/5 writing assignments the entire semester all of which are really easy. Gonna miss taking this class
Long lectures but makes them engaging and interesting. You have to go to class if you want to succeed. If you take good notes and pay attention you will be fine. Good professor and enjoyable class just know its not a cake walk.
Great professor. Few hw assignments, very lecture heavy but does a great job making class interesting and engaging. If you are a fan of history as a subject and want an interesting class would recommend. If you want an easy A to fill the core class, take another course.
