Worst prof ever honestly. Everything is all over the place and he doesn't tell you what he wants exactly. His slides look like a 4 year old made them just awful. Would never take again.

Worst prof ever. Cocky guy who only talks about corals. Went to PASS, read the textbook and took lecture notes and his tests were super abstract asking for weird things we went over once or examples with a twist of something you have no idea about. He also thinks it's funny to give you 50 minutes to do 60 MC Q's and claims that it's an easy test

It could have been interesting if he didn't always talk about coral reefs or his fieldwork class. His midterms are based on the textbook, his lectures, and EVEN the labs. When you do go to him for further clarification, he looks down on you an expects you to already know. Finally, he expects students to do 55-60 MC questions in 1 hour.

Worst prof. His lectures are basically only pictures that are super hard to follow. His tests ask way too many questions for the time allotted and asked super abstract questions, not to mention he would ask multiple questions he said maybe once. Was never clear on what parts to know versus not to know from the book. Avoid at all cost if possible.

you can tell that he knows what he's talking about but thats really only 1/3 of what a prof should be. he's terrible at teaching and his midterm and exams are poorly worded and his slides are possibly the worst things I've ever seen made by a prof. he could be so much better if he wasn't so cocky and maybe listened to his students

I lost my ability to sleep taking this course. His midterm was 35% and the final was 65%, Heartless. Also a very tough grader. He doesn't care about his students and won't make time to meet up after class hours. He knows his material though so that's good. Anyway, if you see his name on your schedule switch courses asap.

His midterms are not fair time wise as well as content that maybe was only mentioned once in class as a vague example. His slides are only pictures so you have to go to class and take notes but also be listening because he expects you to remember every detail. Super arrogant and cocky when you try to approach him with questions.

Midterms and the exam (all multiple choice) were very difficult, as they mostly included information mentioned once briefly and vague trick questions. When I approached him about this, he admitted the questions were confusing but did nothing about it. Very stressful, would recommend not taking his classes if you can help it.

Unfair exams, lack of effort in lecture production and poorly taught, grading students poorly, and lack of understanding for how the course was poorly structured for students resulting in an emotional response that affected grading.

Absolutely the worst professor I have ever met. He has a very bad lecture, his PPT has no information for students. Hard homework, each takes hours with tough grading. The worst thing is exams, he only cares about students' academic integrity, the exams are in a mess with mess grading, he literally teach nothing, he is here to let students get F.

Very tough professor. Does not care about class average. Teaching language is very complex and hard to understand. Could have easily gotten A+ with any other professor.

His lecture slides are poorly designed, difficult to follow, and mostly consist of images with little useful information. Downloading them on an iPad is a hassle, making studying even more frustrating. The midterm was unreasonable, with too many questions for the time given. Overall, I would strongly recommend avoiding this professor's course.

Literally such a hard class for no reason. The slides are so hard to navigate and pretty horrible for studying. The class is very unfair. There is an insane amount of content and you practically have to memorize it all. The exams are literally an insane number of questions in so little time. Doesn't feel like this class was meant for learning.

This is by far the worst prof I've ever had. The final is worth 40%, and labs are 50% with extremely harsh TAs. He made me feel stupid when I asked questions and constantly jumps from topic to topic, making it impossible to follow. Would not recommend, especially for first years. Be prepared to take a lot of notes because his slides are atrocious.

This course was a mess from start to finish. Expectations are crazy for first year student's whom half of them are not even in Biology. Grading felt unfair. Take notes every class because the test are incredibly heavy with 90+ questions for only 90 minutes midterm and 180 multiple choice questions for final. Horrible experience just avoid him......

This prof and his slides were unbearable. The exam was weighed too heavily (40%) and there was too much material to memorize. I was teaching myself the entire course. He is a terrible prof and I suggest avoiding his class if you actually want to learn anything. Don't ask him questions unless you want to feel stupid. Not a good first year course!!!!

Harsh Lab TA's that mess up your grades which are worth 50% of your final grade, slides that are incomprehensible, Final and Midterm with an insane amount of questions and of information to memorize that is impossible for a first year course. I despise this course and this professor, absolute trash !!

Terrible professor. The amount of information he expects us to memorize for a final is insane. I'm usually someone who thinks that memorization is their strong suit, but even this has surpassed my limit, which is rare for me. This prof thinks that his students will know everything just like him, as if we are not undergrads... Insanity !!

If you actually want to have a good grade I would recommend not taking his class because it has been hard for no reason. Expect's us to memorize 20+ slides and video's for an 180 multiple choice exam worth 40% in only 3hr. Same for the midterm where he said it would be 90 questions when it was actually like 95 in and hour and a half. 0/10.

Three years at Carleton in STEM and I have never seen such a demanding professor. His slides are god awful with way too much information and random pictures (he will ask you on tests about every small detail). Carleton needs to have more control over these insane professor expectations ESPECIALLY for first-year courses. Final: 180 MC Midterm 90 MC.

Before the exam I was hoping I'd contract an incurable disease not only because the exam was 180 questions for FIRST YEAR, but Nigel is such an insufferable person and so are the bio lab TAs. I honestly believe this class is meant to drive students to suicide I believe there's no other explanation for it.

I'm someone who loves biology and that usually has good grades in this subject, but unfortunately Nigel Waltho has broken my record. I have good grades (talking straight A's) and I couldn't even manage the final. I'm so upset, the questions were INCREDIBLY hard though I studied a week in advance, and 180 MC… Cmon man. AWFUL. Slides looked like they were made by a toddler discovering Getty images for the first time, and his wording on exams is toddler level too. Sentence structure was so confusing took me half the exam time (180mins for 180mcq) to grasp what he was saying. Exam was more about memorizing random details than the actual key concepts we need,total bs

If I'm being honest, after taking biol 1104 with Nigel Waltho, I feel defeated. I take pride in my grades and in doing well in Sciences, but this is the worst class I have ever taken here at CU. My final grade will probably make me sob uncontrollably, and will weigh down my gpa terribly. Try avoiding him if you can, it will make uni easier.

if this guy is capable of becoming a professor then the caterpillar i killed back in third grade is capable aswell. The content could be somewhat enjoyable if first he knew how to teach in a non monotone and boring way and second if his lectures were actually helpful. Honestly I wish i could say something good about him, I try seeing the good in professor and the work they put into getting to their position as a professor, but I cant do that to someone who is lazy and expects their students to teach themselves, I understand a little bit of self taught is required to exceed in life but not the entire course lol

The concepts he explains are fairly simple to understand but he somehow manages to over complicate them so much in lecture and in the tests that it becomes unbearable to even like biology. I would never take his class again. My best advice is to stay away if you can. Especially if you're a first year!

This class is the hardest I've ever taken. If you think you know the material when its time for the midterm of the 40% final exam, you're wrong. Exams are a guessing game since the questions are complicated, long and include things you'd think you wouldn't need to study, like how to interpret the NUMEROUS pictures on his slides. GPA crasher.

This is genuinely the worst class I have ever taken with the worst prof Ive ever had. The entire course was just ridiculously content heavy for 1st year and the final exam (180 questions in 180 min-it was literally a book) was laughable. He doesn't care and it seems like everything is a setup. Avoid at all costs for the sake of your sanity and gpa.

This is a first year introductory course, not a 2nd year or third year course where heavy workload is expected and where exams are incredibly hard and difficult to understand. This course should be structured better, it's terrible !

Most people I knew who were also in this class put in the hard work, studied together, rewrote the lecture notes and still thought this class was insane. This course with Nigel is a GPA tanker so beware, don't think this course is light, it's not. Some people rating him highly are in the minority of people who understood his teaching style.

Even though this is a first-year class, it honestly didn't feel like it. His tests are brutal—180 MCQs in 180 minutes with super detailed, paragraph-long questions. You can't just understand the material, you have to memorize his exact slides word-for-word. I would start studying day 1, wouldn't recommend at all.

The course isn't bad at all, but the class with Nigel felt more like a intense memorizing game rather than a class with learning outcomes. I felt very stupid leaving the exam room all because I didn't remember every single detail on his god awful slides. Had I taken it with someone else, I would've passed it with flying colours. 1/10 for mr Nigel

I wish I could agree with the few people calling the rest of these people “whiny,” but this prof was genuinely was the worst. Content he tests on is beyond niche. The most tiny details you would never even expect a question on to begin with. 180 MCQs in 180 mins with paragraphs to read prior to answering. Expectations were too high for the course.

Final exam was torturous and should be illegal. Could be a really good prof if he weighted content differently and tested better. I had such high hopes for this course and was hugely let down. This is the type of final that you have to peel yourself out of your chair, glue your eyelids open and see a chiropractor and a therapist afterwards.

To the incoming first years taking this course with him, I sincerely apologize. It's nearly impossible to do well in his class but if you want to get out with a decent grade, STUDY EVERYTHING. If you think something might not be in the exam, you're wrong; everything and anything will be on the exam. All I have to say is good luck.

I can't believe I'm even saying this, but this class was harder than any other courses I have ever taken, yes harder than Calculus and Chemistry. It's absurd the amount of material he expected us to memorize. As a third year, this course doesn't top anything in terms of difficulty!
