The format of this course is great. Lectures are studied online so that class time is used for integration of various topics rather than regurgitation of textbook materials. Dr. Sharan is big on critical thinking so arrive to class with your brain! Best prof I've had so far. I could stare at her all day!

I have her for advanced genetics 3595 right now, and I've never been so inspired and actualized to pursue my masters/PhD in genetics. You can tell she genuinely cares and is an excellent lecturer.

hands down my favourite professor at UWO that I've ever had. just had her in advanced genetics last semester, and though it was a tough course, I still managed to finish with an 88 because she's so generous with marking, genuinely cares about our success, is very fair, and super helpful. 10/10 amazing, inspirational professor. you go girl!

She was also very easy to ask questions to and always wanted us to come to her office hours to ask about anything. Only thing is that she spoke very fast so I had to listen to the lectures at home, but that made me learn ever more!

100% love Dr. Sharan and wish to have her again. Only the quizzes require the textbook but you can google the answers anyway. Exams are purely based on the lectures. Talks super fast so don't even bother going to class, just take notes on the lecture recordings. Also very passionate and tends to yell when she gets excited about the material.

She is super passionate, can tend to raise her voice when she gets really excited, despite being extremely soft-spoken in her own time. I had an extremely rough first year and she was extremely understanding and helpful. She really wants every student she encounters to succeed, not only in class, but in university and life too!

Dr. Sharan is the most amazing professor I have ever had. I am sure you will never have a better prof than her. I know I speak for many women in the class when I say that she is the true definition of a perfect woman. She is intelligent, kind, classy and drop dead gorgeous! A role model for all women!

The best prof ever. You wont find a more caring prof in the whole university. She explains everything so well. Its amazing and shes incredibly fair. All her exams are lecture based only so make detailed notes on her lectures and you will do phenomenally well (like high 90s). I wouldnt bother buying a textbook. Shes good enough!

I had Prof. Sharan for a 3 week fast paced course. She had active learning sessions where she went over the lecture material and clearly defined hard to grasp concepts which was very helpful! She breaks down the content to ensure you understand conceptually, (aka she knows her stuff!) She also goes over MCQ's so you know the style of questioning!

Sharan was pretty understanding and cared about her students. She provided many grade boosts throughout the term and content was engaging most of the time. The exam was pretty hard but thats nothing new.

I don't know why so many people hate on Dr. Sharan this semester because they didn't get the concepts or understood it wrong. Of course university level biology is going to be different and she has definitely challenged me to think critically to prepare me for harder courses. :)

I did not get the chance to build a connection with Dr. Sharan until the end of the semester but I am so glad I did. She is knowledgeable and passionate about biology and cares about her students. I will definitely be making more use of office hours next semester. Biology from high school to university is a transition no matter the professor.

I was a straight A student in high school and I am now a straight A+ student after first semester at university. Dr. Sharan was my only prof that challenged me and prepared me for what is to come in my future semesters. Hats off to her! I heard today we are going into a covid lockdown. No doubt it was a tough year - for everyone. My brother who had a different prof told me this was going to be a tough course, and to bring my A game. I did and it went well. Unlike my other courses this prof was quick in answering my questions by email.

Although the course wasn't easy and it was very test heavy, Dr. Sharan was a wonder professor. She cared about students and was very engaging in her lectures. It wasn't easy for students and faculty this year and it was clear that she tried her best to make sure that COVID had the smallest impact on our education.

Honestly Professor Sharan was pretty good. I believe her lecture quality could've been a bit better but she did her best during COVID. I understood most things and the material was easy enough to learn. Pretty solid prof.

Go to office hours! Too many people didn't make the effort to go to office hours and then complained about her teaching. She clearly explained what she wanted us to do (NOT READ THE TEXTBOOK)! She always went over similar practice questions to the tests and quizzes in video lectures and office hours. GENUINELY AMAZING HUMAN AND PROF!

Don't use the textbook and listen to the problems that she goes over. The test questions are very similar. November Test and Exam had similar questions! Go to office hours and ask all your questions. She answers them so clearly

Not gonna lie. course is tough. also over 2000 students. Focus on MC questions Niki covers in lectures and you'll be fine. final grade stats came out & 60% of us this covid yr got an A+ or an A.

2020 was extremely difficult, not only difficult for us, but also for the profs. Niki did her best to give us the best study experience during such a hard time. University is not like high school. If you don't understand a concept, go to her office hours. It is your responsibility to make sure you know all the concepts.

Honestly, I really did not like Dr Sharan last semester because of her pre recorded lectures. However, she took all our critiques gracefully and readjusted her lectures to an online format. They make much more sense and are so straightforward now and really helpful for visual learners. I finally understand the material!! Thank you Dr Sharan

Every prof should aspire to teach as passionately as Niki does. Some people might think Niki is hard, but what people fail to appreciate is that she is just trying to make sure you understand the specificity of the content. She has always explained things so thoroughly and made sure to prepare you for the tricky concepts. I WOULD 100% RECOMMEND!

First semester of online learning her lectures were rough. But second semester she was the only prof that genuinely made an effort to listen to her feedback to change up her lectures so that we'd understand them better and its definitely payed off! I must say Dr. Sharan is the best prof anyone could ask for. An amazing human being who couldn't have taught the course any better during a difficult year. To be honest last term I was losing my interest in biology, but it came back after finishing this term with Dr. Sharan. I can't thank her enough for this.

Lectures are really clear and she makes quite an effort to ensure that students will understand the content needed and what will be assessed. Her office hours are amazing and she will stay late to ensure that everyone gets their questions answered, and she won't rush through her answers. I used to dread Niki's lectures in BIO1001 because of how quick and information heavy the lectures were. However, in BIO1002 she got better. I still think she could speak a bit slower at times and emphasize on concepts more but otherwise she's a wonderful prof! Extremely helpful and will take the time to go through confusing concepts with you.

Overall, I thought Sharan was a good prof. She was quite passionate about the course, and gave many practice questions that aligned with the exams. Though, I did find her to be a fast speaker in person, and found that her responses to students were confusing/incomplete at times.

The online format does screw with things, but Prof Sharan made it bearable. You'll have to work for the course, esp. if the weekly asynch format continues, but do so and you'll be rewardedbecause she explains concepts clearly, offers nice QnA sessions, and is a genuinely caring instructor. Her lectures are based on the readings, so make sure to do both and do the questions she has also. Labs make up a great part of your mark so make sure to understand them!

I then went to class to learn with this prof in person, where she answered questions and went over examples. She also provided videos outside of lecture that helped me think about my career.

Some of the genetics topics she covers are difficult and dry but she makes it bearable with her enthusiasm for it. She treats us with kindness and respect which is what we needed during covid.

Dr. Sharan is an amazing professor in so many ways. I find her to be helpful, well organized, compassionate towards students and passionate about what she is teaching. I find her questions to be well structured and fair considering the topics covered.

I wasn't sure I would like this course because I prefer physics and math where I can get immediate answers by solving equations and biology always seemed like almost all memorization. But I loved that this prof does not focus on memorization which makes you feel like you are really learning something. Really enjoyed this course.

Online lectures were well designed, the Q&A sessions are basically another lecture where you can ask any questions you want, the weekly quizzes sounds like a hassle but trust me it WILL help you in the long run because all the questions are pulled from the exams.

Dr. Sharan clearly cares a lot about her student's learning. She keeps her lecture slides brief and has really great explanations. She gives many hints for exam questions and her quizzes prepare you well. She is by far the best first year bio prof!

The thing that stands out about Dr. Sharan is her ability to explain hard concepts in a way that is not overly complicated. She is the goat FR.

Easiest Med Sci Course

Great professor. Extremely patient and understanding. If you have her for BIO1001A or 1002B, I recommend going to her office hours. She explains concepts very well and never shames students for asking questions about concepts they "should" know, like some other profs might. Makes difficult concepts simple and digestible.

Super amazing professor! Biology is my favourite course because of her. She teaches exactly what you need to know for quizzes and exams. All you really need to know is the content covered in lecture, and you're good. Her lectures are really interesting and make you appreciate the magic of biology. I'm definitely going to miss her next year!

The most professional teacher I've met in my life. She's a bit fast but ultimately if you're paying attention, it doesn't get better than her when it comes to first year lecturers. She's realistic and very easy to respect. Teaches very effectively and thoroughly explains material without the use of mandatory textbook readings.

Her assigned readings are not tested, so you only have to read them if you need that extra review. She is also really good at explaining and her lectures are really well structured. Dr. Sharan is an incredible professor. She teaches the hardest of the course content, but she teaches it incredibly well and ensures that students have resources to use (e.g. textbook, office hours, forums) if they are stuck. She works to ensure that her students succeed and sometimes gives out extra marks if one of her questions was poorly-done.

Not accessible outside of class. If you have any questions about her cycle, just call it a day and youtube it because trying to reach her is a nightmare. Other than that, she's clear, passionate, super caring, organized, and fair. Tests are hard but fair.

Her lectures are very good and are the only things you need to know for the exams, as long as you write good notes her parts for Bio 1001A are very easy. She starts lectures really late, you can skip 10 minutes and literally be fine for the lecture as well.

I'm in third year med sci and won't forget my two best profs, Niki Sharan in Bio and Felix Lee in Chem, at uwo so far. They are really similar. Great lectures, organized, lovely personalities, and want you to do well. They challenge you to think instead of spoon feeding and some people find that difficult, but that is what university is about.

She's amazing and explains things very clearly. Everything she teaches in class will appear on the midterm or final. I really loved her class and the content itself. Even though I took it a year ago, I still remember everything she taught us.

Fantastic!!! Lectures are amazing, talks a little too fast for me but she covers a lot and in depth. Exams are very fair and she definitely tries to push you to do your best but she doesn't try to sabotage your grades. She cares about her students and their mental health. She is also very well-informed. Lectures are recorded which is a blessing.

She's kind of a meh teacher if you're brand new to a concept, so do your textbook readings so you're up to speed. She's lovely overall and gives good advice for exams.

i honestly think dr. sharan was a good prof. to fully understand concepts it's expected that you read portions of the textbook. she's always down to meet with you and explain things further. i'd definitely recommend doing past-exams and midterms to study because a lot of exam/midterm questions come directly from there. overall, she's lovely.

Her questions are absolutely brutal in BIO 1001, which makes MacShack's questions a piece of cake. I started to dislike her in the beginning, but LOVED her in BIO 1002. Overall Dr. Niki Sharan is an amazing professor, regardless of what others say. Yes, the exam was not what you would call a “good” one, but if you get to know her outside of lectures then you will know that she's extremely caring about her students and wants nothing but the best for them. I highly recommend taking her for any biology course!

ok honestly i did not like her at first because of how fast paced she was but looking back she explained the content very well and was very straight up regarding questions on the midterm. she provides lots of extra material and cares for her students! midterm questions are very tricky but she really does prepare you for it.

She's sooo nice and a great teacher, the only problem is she goes way too fast during lectures it's so hard to keep up and write all the notes you need because she'll start off going slow and then speed through all the slides in the second half of the lecture. I just ended up watching all of her lectures online so that I wouldn't miss anything.

She's a very nice prof, but her lecture slides contain very little text and sometimes the images don't make sense; on top of that she talks very fast during lectures, making it hard to keep up. Definitely a better presenter/speaker than Shackleton but once she realizes she's running out of time she starts speeding through the content. Harder to keep up with considering there's little to no words on her slides. Alternative grading and part marks are greatly appreciated especially after her brutal midterm questions.

Dr. Sharan's exams were very fair for this class and as long as you did the readings and took notes during class, it was quite simple to keep up with the class. My one concern is for the lack of content on the slides. Most notes taken during lectures are from words she says out loud, but she does also record lectures so you can re watch them later.
