Not an easy chem prof. but if you study his notes and read the textbook, you will do well. His tests are out of his notes with a bit more details from the text so read it. His does not curve and you're by yourself in lab, but it's good practice if you're going to take orgo. Practice the hw probs b/c u'll c it in his test--DO NOT CRAM FOR HIM!!
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR! GET READY TO BE CONFUSED, THICK ACCENT, DOESN'T EXPLAIN ANYTHING TO THE CLASS INSTEAD HE TEACHES HIMSELF WHILE DOING THE PROBLEM. MAKES UP HIS OWN PROBLEMS FOR TEST AND SOMETIMES MAKES TYPOS AND DOESN'T TELL THE CLASS SO EVERYONE GETS THE PROBLEM WRONG. LIKES TO PICK VERY HARD PROBLEMS AND TO TRICK YOU! DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
madd easy. his tests are straight from the text just follow his notes and do all the problems in the book and you'll be fine.
This guy always wear a blue jean and a blue shirts on! hard to understand his accent but u will get used to it. do not really follow the textbook. test is rarely from the book. he likes diagram problems and logical explanation. to do good in this class is to TOTALLY UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL!then u can get an A. if u think ur good at chem, challenge
Run away from him; he's horrible. He makes up his own questions out of randomness and he's a low grade-giving machine.
Whatever u do, DO NOTtake this guy. u will regret it.. he is veryy hard, and pulls out test questions from god knos where... hardly any1 did good on his exams. does not really kno how 2 teach and runs out of the classroom right after class ends, giving u no time to ask him questions!
OMG , I DONT WHERE TO BEGIN..........HES THE WORST CHEM PROF U CAN EVER HAVE....... HIS EXAMS R TERRIBLE.... SOME OF HIS QUESTIONS EVEN INVOVLE BIOLOGY.... GOD HELP THE PERSON THATS TAKIN HIM AS A CHEM PROF............. U KNOW HOW THEY SAY KNIGHT IS TERRIBLE FOR MATH, THE SAME ANALOGY ,HES TERRIBLE FOR CHEM
I am speaking for myself and several of my friends in his class. Don't take him if there is another chemistry professor alive. Consider a friendly warning, YOU gonna regret it if you don't listen.
this is a really good prof.he made me love chem.u can have a really good grade if u study.he is super helpful,if u have any ques just go to his office to ask him.on his test it is easy to get B. if u stady hard u can get A.the people rate him bad caz his accent it is UNFAIR. he is a really good teacher!~
he is a good prof. I like chem becaz i have his class. everything u need to do is reading tetbook before the lecure, go to his office be4 the test. and u can go to his office anytime if he is here. and he loves to help students. and dont worry the test, if u study.on the final just do the exercises on book, then u will be fine. he has accent, but h
He is not bad. His tests are not easy, but he grades them generously. He is always at the office in his office hours and ready to help. Almost half of my class got an "A"
He's a great prof!!!! I got As on all the tests they were not easy but they were not that bad. if you study, you will be fine. the ones who always complain are the ones who never do what they are supposed to do. he's really really really helpful and he's such a nice grader. He's always willing to help you when you need him.
He is a really good and nice prof!~come to his office hour and read book then u will be fine!~!~!~he is always in his office hours and like to help students with any chem problem!~ i got an A it was not hard
I worked my ass off in his class. He's definitely not easy, and you really have to study. But he is always there to help. I cried a lot because it was frustrating to study for his class, pay attention to everything on his notes and read the text book. If you like Challenges, he's the man to take. I got an A, and I really worked for it.
All I have to say is: Blue will be your favorite color after taking his class. (you'll understand after taking his class) o and his tests are extremely hard.
SO, I am taking his class this semester and he is NOT a BAD teacher. He makes chemistry fun and adds his own twist on it. Although may get boring at times, he does his best to keep us entertained. I love his class and his tests are fair being that they test your knowledge. He answers all questions and really does help during office Hours.
he is a good prof, but the most important point is you need to do your work!!!!!go to his officce hour as usual as you can, he is very helpful prof!!!
Matsunaga is an excellent professor. People say he is bad because they do not study! You have to study and read the textbook. He is an very easy grader that gives alot of points for effort. His office houres are very helpful. I also find him personally a great kind person. I would recommend him over any other chemistry professor. - islah
islah is right hes great not easy to understand but u must study and you musttt read the textbook. he curves grades so do well :) good luck. i got a B+ its not that easy to get an A but its possible work hard
I loved Matsunaga! His class isn't easy, I worked so hard. He isn't lying when he says you have to read the textbook, I read it inside and out and many people told me I was crazy, but it paid off. His tests are challenging, but if you study and know your stuff there is no reason you can't do well. He really does his best to teach his students.
He is very nice, but if you do not study you will fail. His tests are very hard and he does not really teach what he gives. A good grade is possible, but not without sleeping, breathing, and thinking of chemistry all day every day.
professor is hard but he is extremely helpful , if you think u can pass with procrastinating this is not the class for you , you need to study consistently to do well and DEF. go to his office hours HE IS EXTREMELY NICE AND HELPFUL ! if you can study better yourself then you dont necessarily need to go to his class but he uses his book a lot
If there is another chemistry teacher alive, then please do not take him. He will kill your GPA. The tests are nothing like the class work.
Exams are extremely difficult, but he is lenient when grading them and gives a lot of points for process
Worst Chemistry teacher. Tests are nothing like class work.
not good at teaching. Tests are nothing like class. Does not review before the test.
Professor Matsunaga is a great chem teacher. He uses he's own technique that is very clear to use to solve problems. If you take good notes, you probably won't need the textbook. His exams are from the notes, so if you go to class and pay attention, you'll do fine.
Matsunaga was an average professor. His ways of teaching are unhelpful and unclear. His tests are 4-6 questions and most are usually problems you did in lecture. So pay attention to those. Keep up with textbook problems given on syllabus; the final exam will be 2 questions from each chapter and if you've already done them, you don't have to worry.
Good luck.
Awesome teacher!
Tests are really tough. Yes that means you have to actually study! Very inspirational!
Hard chem professor. Don't take him because you wont understand him and wont pass his test
One of the most inspirational teachers out there
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You must read and understand the notes that he has on his website, make sure you get everything. Some of the questions on those notes are exactly the same on the exam( one for each exam). Go to his office hours and ask him your questions (u will have questions) so he knows you and is less harsh when grading your exam. He is a Great professor
His lectures won't be so easy to understand, but if you study from the book - you will understand! I had to study very hard for this class, again make sure you study from the book, remember all the notes, and also go up to him and show that you care- and he will also care about you! He's a very nice person and he will help you anytime! Study hard!!
Read and read carefully.......I had him as a CHM 3 professor. I'm not sugar coating his class. It's hard to understand what he is saying in lectures. But, if you read the chpts before class then you should be good to go. Whats funny is that students say his test are hard, but he tells you what to study they fail because they're to lazy to study.
Very bad teacher. Starts class saying that more than half of the class will fail. Switch out asap!
not good at teaching. very demanding. exams are at least twice as hard as the other chm 3 prof. gives partial credit for LITERALLY coping the question into your answer. Lab is not terrible. If you want the A you honestly cannot focus on any other class.
If you're unfortunate enough to get this professor God be with you. I have never met a more disrespectful and inconsiderate professor in my life. He is unwilling to help, and if you do get help or do poorly on exams he says you will not succeed(I'm going for med school) and he told me I'll never make it. The textbook will be your bible.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. his tests are very hard and only have 6 questions. He only likes to put in questions he likes and knows more than half the class will struggle on. a lot of people in my class are already failing. SAVE YOURSELF! DONT TAKE HIM! if you do, prepare to study hard and get a tutor, you wont learn anything from him.
Professor Matsunaga was an interesting professor. The class I was in was overall doing fairly poorly, myself included. The textbook is everything, and if you choose not to do the homework, you're at a loss. He gives his own lecture notes but they're extremely confusing and complex. His tests are even worse, and are very short. Good luck
Start doing the "homework" questions from the textbook from the first day of class and you wont regret it, trust me! For exams make sure you fully understand his online lecture notes because his tests are similar to the questions from there. Before exams ALWAYS go to his office hours and make sure he knows you! Good Luck!!!
He is not the easiest professor nor the hardest one. He has a bad rep but really isn't bad. If you study, go over his lectures and review questions on his website, you should be fine in the class. You also have to read for the class
I loved this class!!!!
He expects you to read from his website which he heavily bases his tests on. When he gives the test he asks questions that are very tricky and at times seem like he did not teach us about how to solve them. All he does on his lectures are questions from his website. Hard to understand half the time he is lenient when grading exams. DON'T TAKE HIM!!
definitely the hardest professor ive had. as long as you study from his website you should be fine on the tests, but actually understanding the material was the hard part. knows what he's doing but not the best at explaining to those who don't. im sure there are worse out there, but he definitely beyond challenged me.
Professor matsunaga is terrible. I have him right now for chemistry and its a struggle. I don't understand a word he says and he doesn't care if you fail. I lose brain cells in his class. LIU should fire him or give students a different professor. Students aren't paying thousands of dollars to learn nothing in there chemistry class.
do not take him for chemistry. if you do have him, make sure you understand the practice problems on his site thoroughly and that you've done the "homework"problems from the textbook several times to make sure the material sticks. only graded based on labs and tests and he drops the lowest test grade. his class will bring your GPA way down.
LIU kids pay thousands of dollars to sit in this guys class room to suffer. CAN YOU GUYS PLS DO SOMETING ABOUT THIS GUY. EVERYONES GPA IS GOING DOWN CAUSE THIS GUY CANT SPEAK ENGLISH AND TEACH.
Matsunaga is passionate about his lecturesHe works really hard to make things interesting but he moves quite fast through the materialHis website is very helpful and is the main source of his test questionsGo to office hours and it will reflect in your gradeOverall do the work assigned and you'll be okayHe knows his material
hes very rude, kicks students out of his office hours do not take dont waste your money, time and energy, sanity in this class if you are taking this class do all the text book problems from the first day and look at his website, u might as well not show up to class his lectures are useless
Worst Teacher I've had in LIU. Run Away. The man can not teach. Unreasonable, rude and unprofessional. Should have been fired years ago.
He is definitely not the worst professor out there, but his class is hard to transition into as a freshman. His class is NOT an easy A and you WILL become best friends with your textbook. Its crucial to do well on the first test and be somewhat consistent and he will be VERY lenient when grading. Dont fool around in lab or he will tank your grade!
Give this professor some respect, he been doing teaching this for over 20 years. if you are in his class, you are most likely to be a freshman, accept it, this is how hard it will get sometimes, you have to work hard for it. I don't care about what you think of him, but I promise you he is not one of those actually "bad" professors; He is not bad!
I don't suggest taking his class. Did everything I could to pass and succeed in his class. I went to office hours, went to tutoring, pulled all-nighters reading and doing textbook problems and looking through his website but no luck. If you go to LIU, don't waste your time taking his class. Paying THOUSANDS in tuition to just not succeed.
Everyone's opinions should be taken with a grain of salt, even mine! If you consistently do well in lab, read the textbook and do every practice problem, do the problems on his website, and you don't even have to show up, you'll be okay... Great, even! This class teaches time management the most. Not impossible to do well.
NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO PASS! Study the textbook and do the problems on his websites. Put in the effort don't just assume you won't do well in his class. He isn't the best professor, but he's a great person. If you have a question ASK HIM don't be afraid to ask him for help. If he sees you putting in the effort, he'll try to be less harsh when grading.
PHARM STUDENTS BEWARE UR GPA WILL BE RUINED. You are better off with someone else. This class took my entire energy and focus. The way certain topics were explained was very confusing. I lost him 10 minutes into every lecture. Exams are 10 questions and the final was 2 questions with 25 minutes given. Seriously ridiculous.
His grading is harsh and lectures sound like gibberish. He has his own websites that doesnt explain much and goes straight into examples before knowing what everything means. PharmD. students your GPA will suffer
Grades are only based on exams and they are TOUGH. Lectures are hard to understand so be prepared to do a lot of textbook reading. He does give you a helpful website that he created, and will also help you during office hours. Nice guy, just a tough class. Not impossible to do well though, just takes a lot of work.
This prof rocks! Best ever.
Bro, just dont take this class. not worth hurting your gpa. he does not accurately explain everything and does not give reviews for exams. he only follows his notes (his site) which is clouded with words and numbers so it's utter confusion. also, we purchased connect which we dont even use. waste of time and money
I would not recommend this professor to anyone. If you get stuck and need to take the class USE THE WEBSITE TO STUDY. The textbook won't be super useful but I would still recommend reading it. I took him by first semester freshman year (I am a junior now) and he is the only reason I do not have a 4.0 right now. he gives partial credit on exams
Tough class, your GPA will suffer. There are so many better professors out there just not worth it. Like I'm suffering in chem 4 because of him.
He definitely makes you work for it, but it is possible to do well. I recommend doing the optional homework assignments, and reading his web page before the lecture, so you can ask questions. Make sure you are confident in dimensional analysis and study for the exams. He is nice and will help you. He also gives partial credit on exam questions.
Worst class Ive ever took, you wont understand him, he wont understand you, doesnt speak clearly mumbles a lot has an accent. Lies about whats going to be on the test, very rude and disrespectful not a well mannered man.
Dont take. He was difficult to understand witj extremely difficult exams that make up almost your entire grade. He is okay for labs but to succeed in this class you need to know everything. There will be no charts or references on exams. He is helpful with office hours but will only give you them if you have shown you want to work in his class.
He's very difficult to understand and expects you to understand the material without much explanation. He does try his best but he is not the best teacher. In order to pass this class outside studying or tutoring will definitely be required. His class was based on only a couple tests all of which you won't pass if you don't study hard.
Professor Matsunaga is the worst professor at LIU Brooklyn and the worst professor by far. Save your money and time. This class is not worth it. His exams are not based on his lectures. His notes are horrible. They are vague and unclear. He does not teach effectively. His lectures are a waste of time he
If you understand the notes and study a couple days before exams you will be fine. Everyone that gave him a bad rating probably didn't study.
Nikithia was the worst instructor I ever had. I took tutoring , watch youtube videos, study the book, read his notes. I study so hard for his course and went to him for help. He was no help he made it seem like everything was my fault. I regret taking his course. He messed up my GPA stay clear of him its not worth it.
Nikita was the worst professor I have ever taken. Passing this class is on you. I had to study and teach myself. So if you want to be a toucher take his class. He doesn't answer his emails and then blames you when you tell him you emailed him. If you take him, good luck and get ready to teach yourself.
Exams are pretty difficult, must study at least 3-4 days in advance just to pass. However, his final was easy, all recycled questions from past tests. Dont cheat, hell see!! Keep your lab grade high, itll balance out a low lecture grade. was a hard class, but keep studying, dont get discouraged, and youll get the hang of it.
had him for lab, do not take him, he does not know how to run a class. very unorganized and unprofessional.
This professor is awful. He yelled at me for coming to office hours. Honestly avoid him as best as you can this professor is the only reason my GPA is not a 4.0 (I am now a senior) I want to warn you all not to take him. But in the case you do, use his website and know that he gives credit for work so do not leave a question blank.
If your willing to go to class pay attention and study hard this is the guy for you. 10/10 would recommend
He is a great professor. If he sees that you are putting in the effort and studying hard he will help you out.
He is a worst professor
Nice guy, and always came to class to teach but he never actually explained any of the topics and would just lecture continuously, there is no homework. Also, test are hard since you do not learn much in class.
Hes a good person but a terrible teacher. If you ask for help, he will just say read the textbook. Would not recommend taking him.
He makes it impossible to get a good grade in this class. Tests should be but are not open book. If you need help, he just says come to office hours. No practice problems and no test review. Do not take
hes very nice but the material is hard and can sometimes be explained better. its not mandatory but you have to go to the lectures and actually study to do good. he gives examples and will answer general questions but anything specific he says to go to his office hours. the tests are kinda hard and he doesnt give any hw so they count
Impossible to pass. Your grade is based off of just tests. No hw or participation. STAY AWAY
He's such a terrible professor. The only way to do well is to study the textbook like crazy cause he teaches straight from there. His lectures are too long to the point where you're drained. Definitely the only class I worry about so much so don't take him.
This professor will be the reason you switch majors or lose your scholarship. He seems so nice but teaches like garbage and his grading system is TERRIBLE.
He's terrible and doesn't care for his students . He reads what's off the screen but doesn't teach it. If you ask for help, he will just tell you to read the textbook. If you end up taking his class, prioritize it over your other classes cause that's the only way you'd do good. Also, he sees everything during his test, so don't look around.
Always tried my best in his class, but it was never enough. He makes it impossible to get a decent grade since your whole grade is based on tests. Would not recommend !!
Take him if you are a good self-learner. Attend his office hours, to get extra help. If he sees that you do learn and try, he helps.
Would never take Chemistry with Nikita again. His whole grading system was dependent on tests, which had no correlation to any of his lectures. Gave no homework to bring up our grades. Always read through his website with no clear explanation on the content he was giving out. If you can take another professor, I highly recommend it.
4 exams and final. Grades based on tests and labs. He curves for each test but stubborn about grading, even if it was his mistake. He recycles exams. Study with his lectures but especially the textbook!! If you can teach yourself, take the class. Otherwise, I don't recommend him. For lab, he explains the procedure thoroughly. Keep lab grade high.
Professor Nikita is a great professor and is super nice and fair when it comes to grading. Gives a lot of points on tests and helps you when you're trying really hard. Study and pay attention in his course and you will be fine.
Terrible
This professor goes through lectures without briefly explaining each topics from chapters. Because of that, I had to rely on picking up my studying just so I can catch up. He is a nice and funny professor, and he also gives curves, but, he sucks at teaching and his exams aren't that easy (even if you study a lot). Stay away and try Upton instead.
He is the absolute worse professor to teach at LIU, could barely understand him due to the language barrier. let alone understand his lectures. If you are forced to take chem for nursing or pharmacy if you see his name run. There are no quizzes, and no homework assignments that could help boost your grade. If you do bad on exams, its over for you.
Just trust the rating and don't take him. Studying on your own will still not be enough to save your grade
some people are just not meant to teach. if he's the only option wait till next semester cause its not worth it
Professor Matsunaga is just a terrible teacher. I can't understand him at all, there is a clear language barrier and it baffles me how he got hired. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
His English is HORRIBLE and his handwriting is barely legible. He also doesn't care if you have a family emergency. He will still make you take tests or fail the course. He accuses students of cheating even though we sit 2 millimeters away from each other. His tests are nothing like his lectures. He should not be a professor here or anywhere else.
I learned more skipping lectures and teaching the material myself. Handwriting and english are poor. I understand the difficulties that come with being a non native english speaker, but when it becomes an impediment to passing the class that's where I have an issue. His website also gives you a security warning whenever you access it.
literally so hard, i've never had a professor that i wished would get fired but i do now. he's a nice man and can be funny at times but he can barely do his own problems. students will have to correct him and then he goes "well you know what i mean" like no i don't. im so scared that i wont pass and ive never been close to failing in my life
HORRIBLE. Do NOT take him. You can barely understand him, his handwriting or his teaching. You are only graded on exams and his exams are near impossible. Nothing like the lecture content. Teaching yourself doesn't even help you out because his exams are so out of pocket. God awful professor.
Nikita is very knowledgeable in chemistry. I enjoyed his class. I'm the worst person at chemistry and math, but I managed to get a good grade. He curved each exam by 10 and the final by 15. He is always willing to explain the material during office hours and online office hours if you can't make it. But beware; he has a thick accent.
He's not the best at teaching, but he definitely is a really nice guy. This class only consists of exams but he curves them and drops the lowest exam. I definitely got a higher grade then I expected to get because of the curves.
The best professor and help a lot of students. Stay on his nice side. He gives extra credit if you go to his office hours and the tests are easy you just have to study. if you don't study you will fail the class easily but his class is an easy B.
Although Matsunaga doesn't teach very well and reads off his online notes, the tests were very similar to his notes and he gives a huge amount of extra credit. Just try to study a lot before tests. Try his practice questions and if you need help, ask him. You need to memorize a lot for this class so try to look at the material early.
Nikita is not an awful person but he is difficult to understand and you wont learn a thing unless you teach urself. The class consists of 4 tests and one 1 final and those are the only things that go in to your average. He curves his tests by 10 points and drops your lowest test grade but beware he does this for a reason. find a diff teacher!!
he's a nice guy but a terrible professor. gives 4 exams plus a final and sucks at going over material. if you ask him for a study guide, he'll just say his notes are the study guide (his notes are impossible to understand too). you basically have to teach yourself. his exams are difficult and will barely include whatever you studied
He isn't a bad guy but as a chem professor I wouldn't recommend taking him if you want to do well and especially if its a core for nursing He gives 4 exams and a final Out of the 4 he drops one and curves each test. All test are multiple choice only 40 questions If you can study and teach yourself then take him. But overall I don't recommend.
Matsunaga is a good person but professor wise if you can take another professor PLEASE DO. He only gives 4 exams (10 point curve) and 1 final, if you have a difficult time understanding chemistry then this class is not for you. no attendance, no hw, just exams.
tbh I dont know why he has such a low grade if you have him for intro to chem (chem 101) his test are not that hard and some of his questions come from old exams. dont take Upton so many people look her for NC by the end of the semester.only bad thing is he has an accent by other then that he's always willing to help
I took professor Nikita for CHM101 lab and he is a nice person but he is very tough grader.
Four exams, the lowest gets dropped, and the final is worth only 20%. If you enjoy teaching yourself the material, then this class is for you! I truly don't recommend this class. But he does curve all the exams and the final, so that helps, I guess...
Nikita's class can be challenging, but if you put in the work, it pays off. The exams are tough, but he curves them. I found Unstuckstudy and the textbook really helpful for study prep. Overall, a rewarding class if you're up for the challenge.
Professor Matsunaga is a great professor and one of the only good chem ones at LIU. I was scared to take him but I expressed to him that I needed a B and up for the nursing program and as long as you go to his office hours and practically harass him, he'll know your name and face and see you put in the effort and you'll get the grade you need.
I can tell he has a passion for chemistry but he isn't the best at teaching it. His notes and lectures were hard to follow. You are only graded on exams and he drops the lowest. He also offers a curve which is nice! But it is very difficult to understand his lectures
Always offers office hours and zoom meetings for extra help. Lectures are kinda confusing so make sure to study and attend all office hours.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! AVOID IT!! He expects everyone to be familiar with the material. If you ask a question, be ready for him to say, "You should already know this, it's common sense." His lecture does not make sense. He goes through 3 chapters in a lecture and expects you to understand. If you can avoid him, avoid him.
Can not teach. His lecture notes, or whatever that was, made it impossible to learn. For lab didn't care about cheating students who left early and shamed students who took longer to actually do the work. Rude and made "jokes" about students that were personal and not school related at all. Had him years ago and surprised he is still a professor.
If you have chemistry engraved in your brain, then take this professor. The lectures do not prepare us for the exams, and the questions on the exams are so random and specific. It's hard to understand what exactly you have to prioritize knowing, and he asks too many “all of the above” or “none of the above” in his questions to trick you.
Took this professor for Chem 103 and he was great. His exam questions were almost exactly like the practice problems he showed in class. He also curves really well.
I do not recommend him as a professor for someone taking this class. He is very nice guy and passionate about his work but he sucks teaching others. He doesn't assign work, or take attendance he only grades you based on exams but there is a curve that may work in your favor. He also has a thick accent that makes it harder to learn from him.
Very exam heavy course, does not explain topic well nor writes well on the board for student's understanding. Not good at explaining topics.
Had Nikita for Lab so can't speak for him on lec. Very easy A, just come to class do ur lab and don't be late! Very helpful if u have questions and follow his directions on the board. Has an accent but is understandable.
