dr. imani is inspirational and passionate..his class was amazing
rambles on a lot

INCREDIBLE class and AMAZING teacher!!!
A very approachable guy. Very knowledgeable and critical
An amazing course & professor that will revolutionize your way of thinking!
No tests, no textbook, just five four papers. Follow the guidelines!
very knowledgeable teacher...not a hard class...only 4 papers and a final
BEST professor I've ever had! Reflection papers only -def take a course with him
If you have the opportunity to take a class with this man, DO SO!
Worst professor ever... follow directions exactly or he'll screw you.
Incredible guy, incredible class. He's so smart, and I learned a lot!!
EASIEST CLASS EVER! Papers Only....easy
Easiest class ever, just follow the rules and go to class!
Although I've already posted, I need to reemphasize what a tremendous professor Dr. Imani is. Sign up for one of his classes, and you will not regret it.
Very good teacher! He knows his stuff and makes you think a lot!
Very opinionated, very anti-war. This course is a must-have though--it will give you an adequate global view of war, environmental, health, crime, wealth, & race/ethnicity. He will present the info w/ a good deal of seriousness & some humor. easy papers.
dr. imani is great, some of his ideas however are really radical, but he gives you the option of forming your own opinions and he never forces anything on you..he's really good in his profession.
incredible Prof! Easy as long as you have a mind of your own and have opinions on the subjects. Amazing class.
Dr. Imani gives fascinating lectures, unfortunately he doesn't tolerate differing points of view. You cannot argue with him! But he is definitely interesting and not too hard, just particular.
This guy thinks an awful lot of himself. You'll like his class if you happen to share all of his thoughts exactly or happen to have none of your own.
My favorite professor yet! Easy class, but you'll learn a lot. Very opinionated. Splits class in half: first half discussing current events (war) and then onto the course subject. 6 papers but don't have to be long (2-3 pages DS) all personal opinion-easy
Overall a rewarding experience. I loved and hated him throughout the class because he his very intelligent and very opinionated. I guess that's what makes him great. Just follow the freakin syllabus and use his class to guide you into new territories:)
Very hard to follow, get a since that he's **** toward caucasions, and gets an attitude, i'm not a fan
very bias
REALLY smart guy, but very opinionated and unclear about expectations sometimes. Really intteresting and funny lectures though. If you want a straightforward prof, then not a good choice.
He is very biased and doesn't make you feel wanted in the class. He makes you feel like you don't want to ask any questions, because he will make you feel like you're stupid. His lectures are very unstructured.
He is a horrible teacher and a very angry man who should apply his own psycho babble to his own life before preaching it to others.
He's the worst teacher ever! He makes you feel stupid and he's rude. He thinks he is right about everything, and yet he claims to want our opinions. All I can say is don't take him. There is no better way to put it!!
interesting professor, makes you think a lot. and to all the people that posted as well today its very convienent the day we get our grades back you post bitter comments!! interesting man but you gotta do your ****
the worst teacher seriuosly i ever had...i mean for real he is very bias and says he is openned minded....he is a liar...i would take is class again for again...a waste of time..and not clear on what he wants in his asignments
GREAT teacher, i leave class in awe b/c he is so intelligent, however if you don't follow instructions on assignments then you're screwed
Imani is a very interesting person. He is not your usual professor. Our Soc of the Community class became "Social Justice Activism". He is a passionate man, and he wants us to stand up for what we believe in and not just accept things for fac
Imani is a wonderful teacher. He is very intelligent and I feel that I learned a lot in his class. As long as you go to class and follow the directions for the assignments you should be fine.
I respect him for his accomplishments and his passion for his beliefs but he can be really harsh. He expects regular visits to his office, study groups, monitors your using Blackboard and more. Be prepared to be confused and frustrated at times.
ever turned in a paper...on time...that met the exact requirements stated...and got a zero?!?...take this class and u will...his lectures are very interesting...id love to take the class...if not for a grade
He is a very passionate man, but his opinions need to remain outside of the classroom! His opinions are SO strong that sometimes you feel as though you need to sway your own opinions in order to receive a decent grade.
One of the hardest classes because the material is so unordinary and uses words i did not kow exist. Imani is very tough but he will help you if you go to him in advance. Class very to get lost in if you dont do work almost every day.
i worked my butt off for this course, and still got a bad grade.. like when i did a paper and got a 0?!
This guy is such a leftist, it is difficult to sit through class. I thought college was intended to let the student determine what he or she believes- not to be told by a prof how or what to believe...
hateful negative guy. hostile to his students and out right rude during private meetings. Worst professor I've had at JMU.

Terribly close minded person- This guy is unwilling to comprimise and even sent out e-mails he had gotten from a student to EVERYONE IN THE CLASS...to belittle that student??? He also sent out the reply insulting that student. This guy blows
be prepared to get zeros on your papers even if you did follow the instructions. he's a no mercy professor so you get no re-writes or points for effort and just turning in the paper.
All you should do is show up to class every other time, and use info from lectures in your papers. Likes to hear his own voice... even if you don't agree, say you do for the sake of your grades and you will be fine.

Hands down, the BEST professor I have had during my four years at JMU. The only educator I have encountered on campus who is not afraid to speak the truth. Most people do not understand his teaching style and want to live in their happy little worlds.
I think he is brilliant. Such an interesting guy. You'll either be turned off or inspired.
GREAT TEACHER! If you follow the instructions and use the help that is offered you will do fine in the class, those that don't like him seem to assume that all classes are supposed to be easy!ITS NOT HIGH SCHOOL anymore!TAKE him he will expand your mind!
Dr.Imani is a very intelligent man.Unfortunately he does not know how to teach. He would be better off lecturing or something but he cannot effectively convey ideas to his students and blames us for the communication failure. He railes on about us not asking questions and then belittles us when we do.
Let the good times(stuff) roll. Very different type of professor. Be prepared to change your normal studying and paper writing techniques. Once u get that you are good to go. But if you dont the zeros starta comin. His classes are not for everyone especially those who cant conform.
Learned tons of interesting things but he is so unclear with his expectations. Gives people zeros on take home exams when they did all the work. Pretty unfair guy. Don't take this class unless you can't get into anything else...
DROP HIM IMMEDIATELY!! gives long winded lectures that amount to nothing, exams/papers are open to interpretation until grading time and then he says you either failed to meet his expectations or some other bull since he doesnt give any expectations, also likes to call out students and embarass them
Imani teaches some interesting stuff-very passionate about teaching and will easily fill the class w/lecture. He will give zeros on papers/tests but they aren't the final grades, if you do everything you'll pass. He's looking for people to come to him and apply his suggestions to their papers.
Not a fan! I would follow his directions and get horrible grades. I once asked what I needed to do differently and he gave me some advice. I followed it and was given a zero for something I worked very hard on. The key to passing? Make his opinion your opinion. Then you get a decent grade.
Great lecturer, poor teacher. Unfortunately, he expects you to write papers based on your own arguments and what he REALLY means is to spit back his own arguments he gives you in class. However, if you do this, you will get great grades in class.
Good class, interesting topics. I leave each class feeling like I learned something new. Imani is a very different type of teacher, and he expects a lot, but do the work and you will succeed. Just don't bring cellphones to class, ask questions, and participate. You get out what you are willing to put in.
Overall there was a good amount of interesting material that we covered. Make sure you go and talk to him about what he expects on papers! The sooner you catch on, the less mess ups will occur. He has a system, and don't "interpret" the system, just do as he says and it wont be that bad.
Terrible. The man is so full of himself and is near complete worthlessness as a teacher. If you can stomach his **** then you can get an easy A, but if not you are screwed. A few friends and I skipped at least 1/3 of his classes and we all got at least a B+. He will make you want to skip class more than any other professor. Completely liberal, but so closed minded about it!!! No one knows better BLAH! What a waste.
Its funny how closed minded all of these kids below this are. He doesnt preach ****, if you dont have 50 pieces of research and evidence to refute him than you need to shut up. Taking this class is the best things I ever did. He opens your mind to LIFE and doesnt let you leave without atleast thinking twice about things. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
This class intimidated me at first, but I found it very interesting. By the end of the class, I learned what he expected and actually had fun arguing my points in papers. Go to class and take notes and you will learn a lot! It is very different than any other class i've taken at JMU.
dr. imani is a very intelligent man who will open your mind to new ways of thinking. he's definetly intimidating at first and can be unclear on expectations, but just make sure you follow his instructions. overall this is a very enjoyable course.
I'll start off with sayin i got an A, only bc I bs'd all my papers, his teaching style can be defined as ranging from a modern "no grading system" to a dictatorship that reminded me of my elementary years with nuns. i don't recommend anyone take ANY of his classes until he learns how to be consistent. don't bother asking questions in class.
I enjoyed his class but he def. doesn't teach from the book. He is VERY unclear about his expectations but by the end of the semester I got the hang of it and ended up with an A.
By far one of my most and enjoyable and unforgettable classes at JMU. The first week or so though u may piss in ur pants yes, but u come around, or maybe he does. He is OPEN MINDED & OPINIONATED very experiened in life! Take the class, it's an easy listen & his jokes are right on time!!!! He does not hold back so go for it!
you are probably going to get pissed off within the first few weeks because he's very opinionated and not very clear in his directions or grading.. but if you hang in there his lectures are really good and he can be really funny... if you are confused go to his office for help.. he is very helpful if you take the time to talk to him-I got an A also
Although he is very smart, he is a terrible teacher. He is extremely opinionated and there is no such thing as "constructive criticism", he's always right and you're always wrong. If you want an A, just do exactly what he says, even if you think it's wrong or not what you actually believe.
Imani is great, very intelligent. His way of teaching is a little different so if you don't pay attention to directions or miss a lot of class you won't do well. But talk to him, pay attention to instructions(check blackboard!) and show up consistently and you will get an A or B no problem. He wants you to do well! I take his classes whenver I can
Three problems with this guy: Has a PhD in Sociology, which allows him to hide behind a university desk and criticize the world without doing anything constructive. Has a PhD in Metaphysics; about as useful as magic beans. He's claims to be open-minded, but does not encourage critical thinking in this class. Good guy, but useless to society.
Dr. Imani has good intentions, but his head is so swollen with pride it can make you sick. He flaunts his degrees and experience, and makes the students feel like peons. He disregards psychology, but he's a sociologist. Which field has helped the most people? Dr. Imani claims to know the true nature of things, but offers no solutions to problems
Cool guy, lots of interesting things to say, but can't teach worth a darn. He's also a Reverand, and a critical sociologist...contradictory in the highest sense. Religion does more harm than good, especially from the critical perspective. Don't take this guy, but he should be outta there anyway.

Ok lecture. Intimidating and annoying. Be ready for more spam from him than you ever thought was possible from any human being alive. Unfortunately, one of them will be about class. So you have to sift through spam to find the important email. He's so into causes that if you made up a cause he'd spam the whole class about your "cause".
OK everything evrybody has said is 100% true. however, this class has revolutionized my thinkig and no matter how pompous the man is I owe him my brain. thanks to him i have learned to think outside of capatilism, eurocentrism, even time. if u want to learn more than u thought poss., take the pompous ass
this guy needs to be fired, asap. for 6 weeks he's NOT TEACHING the class...the class is doing presentations on the textbook. yeah, nuff said
Imani will change your life. Take your heads out of your obnoxious jmu elitist asses, and open your minds. Don't take him if you just want an A. But if you want to learn something that matters from an eccentric, brilliant professor; then take the class.
Imani is a joke. No one is ever sure of what he expects for papers. He explains things in a roundabout way which reveals nothing. If you ask for clarification, he makes you feel like you are stupid. Only lectures for half the semester, the rest is presentations, which he fell asleep for once. Grades are totally up to his mood. Sends tons of emails.
He is smart and makes sure you know it, can be very intimidating and makes you feel stupid when you ask questions. the information is very interesting, and the lectures arent that bad, but his grading is very inconsistant. only 4 papers and a final- and he gives out zeros very easily. my advice is dont take him
Imani deserves to be fired NOW. He is the worst teacher I have ever had since pre-school. If you get him, switch out IMMEDIATELY!!! His teaching methods are useless, he only thinks that his ideas are worthwhile, no one else's, and he is completely disorganized and unsatisfactory. Why JMU hired him I do not know.
I was really interested in the subject matter so I took the class regardless of what I was told.. should have listened. He's elitist, non-responsive to questions, absolutely ambiguous about what he expects, and when you don't do it the way he wants, you get angry emails. He's great to listen to but as far as class goes, steer clear.
I can only repeat what everyone has said. I was EXTREMELY interested n this class n excited despite what I read here. I figured the subject would b sweet enough that I wouldn care about the teacher. Im tellin you now: DONT TAKE HIM. Pompous, elitist, totally unclear about what he wants, and spam emails u. dont avoid this subject, but AVOID IMANI!!!
The rules for tenure should be changed just for this man. Worst. Teacher. Ever. I'm obsessed with the subject I just hate him. I can't believe I got such a bad person who teaches such a great subject. Never ever take. Ever.
Don't take him. I am an A student and I ended up dropping his class because I could not take it, and I LOVE sociology. He has a huge head, does not answer questions, and is so unclear about the assignments. He won't learn your name, ever, and grades depend on his mood. Avoid.
Imani is not easy by any means; however, he is great at opening your mind to new perspectives.. i don't know about the older ratings about him, i learned more in 378 than i have in all my other soci classes combined. if you are interested more in learning than a grade then take his classes.
Um. Let me just say, with 100% confidence - Imani's probably the worst teacher I will ever encounter here at JMU... or anywhere. He's the least helpful person when it comes to anything, COMPLETELY unclear about just about.. everything... you have no idea what your grade is EVER, spam emails you, and all he does is complain. A LOT. avoid avoid avoid
Guy is so narrow minded! Do not take this class because if you ask a question he will make you feel dumb. Sends out emails as if it were spam. Flat out, not a nice man and during office hours he is intimidating. DONT TAKE HIM
DEAR GOD STAY AWAY!! Imani seems to be quite knowledgable throughout the course but presents a very pestimistic view of the world. He cannot be anymore unclear about what he wants. He is very intimidating and makes you feel stupid. DONT TAKE!!!
he is really hard and it is hard to figure out what he wants from the papers. however, he does let you come into office hours and turn in rough drafts. i got the lowest score on the first paper, but perfect scores on my last 2 and ended up getting an a. once you figure out what he wants, its not bad. READ THE BOOKS THOUGH! like a month ahead.
Prior to each class he would give us a speech on how we need to become better students. Lectures were interesting but if you asked questions he made you feel stupid. No matter how many times I went into office hours I still could not understand what he wanted in our essays. Finally my inbox was full of his SPAM emails all semester. STAY AWAY!!!
Anyone who does not like this teacher did not understand him. His class is solely based on the idea of opening everyones mind. Hes not going to hand feed you an A like high school, and hes probably the smartest guy I have ever met.
Imanis bad rating on here is the reason hes a teacher: To open the minds of those of you who need to learn more about life. The class is not hard and as long as you dont ask him stupid stuff then hes really helpful. Its hard to believe people are that stupid.
Overall the lectures are interesting filled with facts about history you never learned...but when it comes to assignments its difficult unless you can read his mind...
This professor had a lot of opinions about many things. He did not have a fair grading scale and was completely useless. Do not take this class if you expect to understand assignments. Sure, he teaches useful stuff, but I've had much better professors that I learned a lot more from than this guy. Do not take this class. It's horrible.
Worst teacher at JMU. Unfair, Unclear paper requirements/unfair grading. Hateful man, unrealistic expectations. Told us to come see him three times for each paper and submit a draft. Unrealistic.
Class was very interesting, but the grading system he uses negated the enjoyment of the class. Would recommend the class but not the professor.
Some people just aren't meant to be teachers... Imani is one of them. He is ambiguous with assignments yet particular with what he wants and condescending and rude to students. He also tries to assert his political views in his lectures, which is frustrating, especially being a moderate; give me the facts as they are, without your commentary.
I am not normally someone who looks at this cite for advice on professors. The subject matter is interesting BUT DON'T BOTHER TAKING THIS CLASS. Dr. Imani is rude and condescending. The class average for the first essay was a 59%. How he grades is a mystery. I've never been talked to or treated like a child in a college class before this one.
this guy is the biggest hypocrite in one hundred square miles around harrisonburg. not only does he claim to be a christian, hold on "minister of God", but he also is a wannabe hip hop rap star who is nowhere near a christian. but enough about the man, how about his teaching skills? Completely whack and/or nonexistent.
Dr. Imani is probably the worst professor I have ever come in contact with. He is completely contradictory and unclear. His grading system is a joke, and says he grades qualitatively even though he doesn't.He makes you feel like an idiot when you talk to him and is one of the rudest people I have ever met. The class was interesting, in spite of him
I read all of the other ratings on here and thought that since I'm an A student that's done fine with other bad professors before, I'd be fine with Imani. I was WRONG. Should've listened...run far, far away from Imani. You can do anything and everything he asks of you and still fail. I've stuck it through, but my GPA is in serious jeopardy now.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH THIS MAN. No written syllabus, useless book, no consistent teaching or grading methods. I'm an A student who enjoys challenging classes, but this wasn't just challenging- it was a semester-long guessing game. Stay far away if you want to keep your GPA intact.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! He is a rude, not approachable person. He makes you feel like a complete dumb butt. Class is sometimes interesting but very one sided. GO IN TO TALK TO HIM about your drafts. If you don't you'll probably get a bad grade. And write drafts! I would NEVER take a class with him again. Avoid him at all costs.
Awful professor. He is condescending, disrespectful and extremely egotistical. You are not free to have your own opinions otherwise you'll have problems. There is no syllabus, no written instruction for assignments, no criteria for grading and close to zero feedback. Why this man still has a job here is beyond me. AVOID PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS.
Not sure if I had the same Imani as everyone else last spring, but I thought he was great. Lots of work and he can be a jerk is you don't know your stuff, but the key thing with him is to not be an idiot. That simple, you got into JMU somehow, you can't be that dumb.
Imani gets a bad rep. I definitely think he is kind of a hot head, spam emails you when he is pissed, haha it's kind of funny actually. But I will say I LOVE his lectures. I learned so much in his class and he really opens up your mind. I'd suggest him, just do what he says, and go to his office hours! They really do help.
The only grades in this class are on paper submissions. I once questioned my grade via email and he responded soon after by scolding me like a child in all capital letters and told me never to question his authority. If you want an easy sociology class, avoid this condescending egomaniac. Just because he's smart doesn't mean he can teach.
He is a great professor and being his student was life changing personally and professionally. Of course it was hard work, its college. The book Yurugu is still a challenging read. It's called critical race theory for a reason folks and if ya don't like being critical or thinking forget university let alone, law or graduate school!
STAY AWAY! class grade depends on 4 papers, and it is absolutely impossible to write a paper that imani finds acceptable. after failing my first 2 papers, i spent 3 hours in his office talking, in depth, about my next paper topic. guess what i got on the paper? a zero. very very interesting class, but if you care about your gpa then STTAAAY AWAY
DO NOT TAKE IMANI. He is RUDE and hateful. While his lectures are interesting, the class is NOT worth the mean emails and condescending attitude he always carries with him. He does NOT explain his assignments and expects you to know exactly what he wants. He is AWFUL.
This is the worst professor at JMU. DO NOT TAKE HIM. the topics are interesting, BUT his views are very skewed. ITS HIS WAY OR THE HIGHWAY. its impossible to ask questions, he is RUDE!!! HE IS UNCLEAR and wont let you use any other sources when writing papers because he THINKS HE KNOWS EVERYTHING. STAY FAR FAR AWAY
So much work! a tough grader, but overall what he has to say is interesting. Don't take this unless you like Sociology as much as I do. You will get stressed
If you listen to him and go to his office hours you'll do fine. I failed his first paper but i managed to get an A for the class because I asked him for help. The only reason why everyone thought he was rude was because they wouldn't get out of their confort zones and ask for help when needed. It is a bit of work, 4 papers and exam, but do learn.
Well he tends to be very intimidating, he will send you very rude emails. In office hours he is not so bad however in class he tends to not get his point across clearly. Just a general warning if you do not have to take this class for your major spare yourself the headache. Grading scale is very unclear and it seems he tries to be deceptive.
He comes off as very intimidating and makes you feel inferior when you ask questions. He claims to not indoctrinate you, but he will. He emails long rants about whatever problem he has with his class. You come out of this class feeling worse than when you go in. Do not take unless you have a strong stand on your beliefs.
His instructions can be vague, they can change, material taught in class is not in the book, he is sometimes in a bad mood. This class is kind of like, you know, real life. If you have questions, look for the answer and then go ask Imani. Wondering why you got a 31 out of 55 on a paper? Did you do a draft? He will teach you a lot if you let him
