dr. bakas is an incredibly kind person, but she has no idea how to teach apart from reading directly off slides. she frequently would make mistakes in her lectures that were then corrected by students. she has taught wrong info pertinent to tests on a few occasions. with how difficult the chem tests are, she fails to prepare you. take someone else.
She's very nice... but that is the only positive thing I can say. She makes so many mistakes during lectures and seems to just confuse herself. She did not explain the material well, was not engaging in lectures, and I did not feel she prepared me for the exams. Take literally any other instructor. If you get her, Science Guyz helps SO much
This professor is not highly experienced and it shows. Every day in class she will simply read the slides the whole time. She does not explain them, and when questions are asked, her answers leave us more confused. When the slides are actual problems, she works them out on the screen but often makes mistakes, which students then speak up to fix.
Dr. Bakas is a very kind person. However, 1211 is a hard class that needs to be taught extremely well for students to succeed. For chem 1211, I would strongly advise taking a more experienced professor who can teach effectively and clearly. Bakas obviously knew the content but was confusing and could not teach well.
I'll give it to her, she was new this year... However, I did not like her teaching style at all. She seemed like she didn't really understand what she was talking about and made a number of little mistakes that changed the meaning of the content. When students asked questions, it didn't sound like she was ever confident in what she said.
She's a nice person and is willing to accommodate at times, but she barely ever responds to her emails. She's also new to teaching, which makes her teaching style very erratic and hard to keep up with. Although her teaching has improved through the semester, it is going to take a while before she will gain the confidence to teach. So I'd wait.
Dr. Bakas is the worst professor I have had. Her lectures are all over the place and she will get problems wrong on the board. She is a nice person, but terrible at teaching. I was supposed to get points back for two progress quizzes and I went to office hours 2 times to ask her to change it, but she never did.
Nikki Bakas is nice but her lectures don't really do much. She goes ahead of the course's actual speed so you learn the next unit before the current unit's test. Gen chem is usually like this no matter what professor you have. Attendance is taken through a square cap which is just one or two questions that count towards attendance.
Chem at UGA is going to be difficult no matter what, and she did not make it any easier. I feel like I got nothing out of her lectures. She is new to teaching, so I tried giving her some grace, but she just lacks confidence and didn't ever really seem like she trusted/understood what she was saying. She says "um" every other word
It is very evident that Bakas is new to teaching. She doesn't seem very confident in what she is teaching and is very shy during lecture. Going to lecture is honestly pointless, but attendance questions are taken so you have to show up. I will say, however, that she is very helpful during office hours when she is not in front of several students.
Obviously no one likes gen chem or the professors-- so take this with a grain of salt. I feel like I could have done better in this class with a different prof. Lectures are superficial when compared to exams. Bakas was overall fine, but she did take a while to correct excused attendance grades. If she's your only choice, I would still take her.
She did not know the material well enough to teach. The lecture was pointless. Would not take her.
The lectures are extremely pointless, and she lacks the confidence required to teach this course.
She doesn't know the material. She doesn't answer questions. She is not helpful. Run! Take anyone but her
She does not know anything about chemistry or how to teach it. I had to learn everything on my own. Don't take her. If you do end up having to take her, get science guyz and go to other teachers office hours, you basically just have to teach yourself the content.
I could not stand this class. While Dr. Bakas is not a terrible professor on the whole, she definitely does not know much about the subject she is teaching. When accessed for office hours she can be generally snarky and unapproachable. Just be prepared to put in the work OUTSIDE of class and GET SCIENCE GUYZ EARLY ON!!
Lectures are pointless because she doesn't know what she's teaching and you don't learn anything from them, but they're mandatory anyways. I taught myself the entire class. Final is pretty easy though, I recommend getting the study guide for it but just note that its a physical book that has to be shipped to you so buy it ahead of time
Professor Bakas was new this year and it definitely showed. She is a nice lady but seems to be uncertain about herself when teaching lectures. Chem is already such a hard class and sometimes her lectures only made it even more confusing. She taught using lecture slides only and I found myself teaching myself through Science Guyz and other tutoring.
She had an ok personality, but her lectures were god awful. She continuously got her own questions wrong and would say "um" at least 16x in every sentence. Does not know to how to speak cohesively and should go back to school to learn how to talk. Obvioulsy, she's a smart girl, but she is a terrible teacher. Does not make any lecture worth it.
She was new this year, and therefore her teaching style wasnt fully developed. (Often didn't know answers to questions and would respond with "I will get back to you next class.") However, she would always get back to us and had the answer next class and was rlly nice. Also the chem dept is in charge of tests and stuff so grading wasn't her fault.
Professor Bakas was a first year teacher and it showed in her teaching style. She often couldn't answer questions that students would ask regarding the lecture. She is accessible outside of class and a sweet person, however; I would've rather taken a chem class with a Professor who has been teaching the subject for a longer period of time.
Professor Bakas was a first year teacher and it showed in her teaching style. She often couldn't answer questions that students would ask regarding the lecture. She takes forever responding to emails, and isn't very clear when she responds to these emails. She is however a nice person, but would not recommend to take.
Required attendance and lectures are almost always wrong, requiring someone else to speak up and correct a mistake that she made. Mandatory recitation as well, a homework and a quiz due each week.
Not a good lecturer. Actually learned nothing in her class. Had to rely on Science Guyz.
After reading the reviews from last semester I was hoping she would improve this semester... sadly that is not the case. She is not confident in anything she says and you will be relying on outside sources like Science Guys to learn anything. Says "um" every other word. Just avoid... she makes a hard class even more difficult.
She was so bad at explaining concepts and her powerpoints were very disorganized. Be prepared to do a lot of work outside of class to understand the concepts along with the weekly reading checks and progress quizzes. Highly recommend getting Chegg or science guyz to get through this class
THIS IS THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. Not only does she not understand what is taught and makes the content so much more confusing, but she is quite literally the most boring lecturer in the world. Please please avoid taking at all costs, she truly makes an already difficult class 100x harder.
She is the worst professor I have ever had. Her lectures are just her reading off of the powerpoints. Attendance is mandatory for the squarecap questions. She is awful at explaining, fails to answer questions, and often makes mistakes when working out problems in class. Her notes are not helpful at all. I had to rely solely on science guys.
She had never taught before last year. I don't know why she didn't start with high school cause she has no clue what she's doing. If you aren't worried about graduating late, wait a semester and take a better professor. Having her teach you chem puts you at a complete disadvantage.
Okay lets be real here. If you're taking chem 1211, get ready to spend 15 hours a week outside of class teaching urself everything. But, Dr. Bakas does not really help with this at all. She spends half her lectures saying "umm" and just reads the already disorganized powerpoints verbatim. The problems in lecture are 10x easier than whats on the HW.
Awful attendance policy and kinda lost
All chem professors aren't very good but this is probably the worst. She seems lost most of the time and likes to just stare at the ceiling while rambling about nothing. If you don't have success with teaching yourself every piece of material in the class you're probably cooked.
Shes literally a decent professor. If you want to succeed in UGA chemistry, all u need to do is study outside of class. Professor Bakas is a solid professor, she provides all the materials you need to succeed. She may get some questions wrong in lecture, but thats more opportunity to be more involved in class anyways.
I cannot say Nikki Bakas is the best professor, but she gets her point across. Every lecture is uploaded with extra materials on eLC. She is competent I promise! Chem 1211 is hard at UGA! Please study outside of class, you WILL NOT pass chemistry anywhere if you only attend lectures. The concepts are hard, deal with it! She is really not that bad!
Overall, Nikki is mid. She's too quiet to be heard in lectures, and doesn't fully explain everything we need to know. Highly recommend getting the ACS book for the course to go along with throughout the semester (something I wish I would've done). Get tutoring through penji and go to office hours, maybe it'll help. Chem at UGA is just hell period.
She seems afraid of the class and isn't good at speaking to the large lecture. She is obviously really smart but she just presents the information and doesn't explain how or why. You're better off going to another professor's office hours and utilizing resources like ScienceGuyz. Chem is difficult overall but she just makes it so much harder.
She seems like maybe she's sweet, but she is new and has no idea how to teach chemistry. She very frequently makes mistakes and one time she said, "Well I don't know how to do that so we're just not going to name that." My main complaint is that she sucks at teaching the material.
nikki, I know it's your first year, but that can't be an excuse as to why you do not have a teaching style and cannot answer half the questions we ask.
This was the worst class I've ever taken. I came into college not having the best base in chemistry since I took the class during the pandemic. Bakas was zero help. Lectures were chaotic and unhelpful, it seemed like she barely knew the information she was teaching herself. The in class practice questions were nothing like the exam. DO NOT TAKE!!
I feel like her teaching style will get better because she is still new, so take this review with a grain of salt. Lectures were very content heavy and not explained well. Lots of outside assignments and there are assignments in class every single lecture; if you miss a lecture, you will get lost very quickly. If you study, you will do fine.
She's a very sweet person but it's difficult to understand the topics she's discussing because she moves so fast through the lectures. There's lots of homework thats always due on the weekends, and little preparation before exams. You'll definitely need to dedicate a lot of time to tutoring and teaching yourself the material.
I don't think the class difficulty is entirely her fault. She often has a hard time explaining things if you don't understand a concept the first time. There's one reading check, progress quiz, and homework assignment per week--plus 4 exams and a final. The exams count heavily but your lowest assignment grades are dropped!
She's super nice and her in class powerpoints are really helpful. The chem department at UGA sucks but that's not her fault. There is a lot of homework, but again I don't know if that's her decision. She's always available for questions and has office hours regularly.
She seems sweet and caring, but her lectures don't align with the super difficult exams. She gives weekly quizzes as hw assignments with time limits, making it tough to score well. In-class quizzes are graded for accuracy, which adds extra pressure. I'd recommend avoiding her class if possible.
Although her lectures are pretty organized, she can't explain the concepts well. There's a lot of homework and due on weekends. When I asked her questions, her answer just made me more confused. I could not recommend that you don't take her class enough. I did well in class, but had to teach myself the content outside of class.
She reads off of slides and dodges questions. Unless you excel at chemistry, do not take her class.
teacher did not teach material for test very socially awkward
Is she as bad as these reviews make her seem? No. Is she a good teacher? Also no. The problems in class are not comparable to the difficulty of recitation + exams, and she does not seem confident when teaching. Use Scence Guys to supplement the course and you will be fine if you get her. Lots of resources available, study a lot to do well!!!
Everyone hates Nikki, but she's the sweetest soul. She wants you to succeed and do well in chemistry. After each class, she posts her annotations of notes from the class period. If you don't understand she will stop to make sure you have an understanding.
The chemistry department is incredibly challenging, but I think Dr. Bakas does her best. She doesn't have a lot of personality, but she gets through all the content in good timing and offers office hours. I would suggest science guyz no matter which professor you have.
The chemistry department as a whole is awful - Dr. Bakkas is better than 90% of the 1211 teachers. Most people complaining are not taking the time to self study, which isn't her fault. Chemistry is a hard class, but Dr. Bakkas is kind and uses the material given to
Class is beyond boring. She speaks quietly almost like she's scared and reads off the PowerPoint. There is SO much homework and weekly readings AND they overlap her own assignments. Homework was 10x as hard as the questions from lecture. Recitation periods have mandatory attendance she won't let you leave for anything. She's also a little rude
She is very nice, but her teaching style is so disengaging. The chem department is terrible regardless of your professor, but I had her for both 1210 and 1211 and have really struggled with the way that she teaches. She is willing to answer questions and is much better in 1211 than 1210, but she doesn't always know how to answer questions.
While the chem department is not good in general, I do think I would recommend Bakas. If you ask her questions, she is always eager to answer them. The lectures go quickly, so make sure you stay on top of things because it can get overwhelming quickly. But, again, this is like all the chem classes.
Chem department overall is bad, but she's alright in terms of teaching; the pacing is really quick and shoves a lot in your face. Would recommend sci guys but they are expensive. Weekly recitation assignments due at the end of the week covering content from the week before, and reading checks covering content for the future week. Do not take chem.
She is not a good teacher, doesn't explain things (like most things are just because they are in her class, not WHY), is very awkward, and has annoying/rigorous explanations for teaching problems. Wouldn't take again.
She is nice but that is the only positive thing I will say about Dr. Bakas as a teacher. After seeing how Science Guyz and other instructors (specifically Jensen) would explain things it made me realize how bad she is explaining literally anything. Don't expect a coherent response when you ask her a question or to elaborate. The worst 1211 teacher.
I know she's not everyone's favorite, but I liked her. She is nice and cares about helping her students understand. She has really good annotated slides and writes out good examples step by step. Sometimes her lectures are confusing because she is not the best at answering questions. Definitely don't be worried about taking her, you will learn well
I took Bakas for 1210 before 1211, and I will say that she has improved in her lecturing style. I still don't recommend her. The lectures are content heavy, but I don't feel like I learn anything at all, I learn outside of class on my own. Assignments outside of class are just ok. If you end up with her, and you really study, you'll do fine.
She is not nearly as bad as people make her out to be. The department as a whole is difficult but Bakas explains things well enough to understand the material. I definitely recommend Science Guyz as a study source, but it is possible to do well without it. She is super sweet and chill and is really helpful if you do not understand a certain topic.
She just reads off the slides and goes so fast. I never knew what was going on because she was always 3 slides ahead when I finished writing the notes from one slide. I learned absolutely nothing from her and had to teach myself everything. She just is not a good teacher at all.
Dr. Bakas is a good Chemistry Professor. She is very sweet, and helps with questions. She seems flustered at times, but has gotten better over time. ICQs are not very difficult, and she does post a lot of review material, and all of her notes and annotations. She is a good teacher, and the reviews here just reflect CHEM1211, not her teaching.
She's super sweet, it's just the chem department that sucks. Her lectures are pretty good, but a little fast. I recommend science guyz regardless of the professor. She's helpful outside of class and very willing to help, it's not her fault UGA doesn't know how to run a chem department
I had Dr. Bakas for 1210, chose her again for 1211. The content itself is hard, and the workload is quite a lot, but the entire department uses the same software (~$50 cost) so that's not on her. Dr. Bakas does her best to answer questions and teach the material, and she's quite sweet and eager to help. She's a newer professor, but not bad at all.
She wasn't too confident lecturing but she got the job done so I could teach myself. It's not her fault the chem department sucks and the homework/graded activities aren't her decision. She was sweet and she got through the material in a timely manner before every exam. Took her TT class. Prepare to put in work no matter the professor.
professor bakas is super sweet and very kind! chem at UGA is hard regardless, but she definitely tries her best at explaining different topics! i got science guys which was SUPER helpful and would definitely recommend regardless of who you take. her office hours are great and can be super helpful!!
Chem 1211 is hard no matter the professor. Bakas is very nice. She always sounded a little nervous during lecture but it didn't really affect anything. I would strongly recommend getting science guys. She's a pretty understanding person- would recommend over other prof.
Dr. Bakas is an average teacher. She covers most of the material in the lectures and in the assignments due weekly. Attendance is based on squarecap questions. You're graded based on half completion and half accuracy for the in-class questions. I had to study and teach myself a good bit outside of class to do well on the tests though.
I absolutely love Dr. Bakas. In general, chemistry is a tough class so if you don't go to class, you won't do well. Nonetheless, she is very nice, patient, and willing to take time with you outside of class to explain concepts. Most important thing is for you to make the initial effort! Attendance is based on in class questions.
Dr. Bakas was a great professor. She is very kind and approachable! Chem is hard, no matter who you take. Since the class is standardized across the department, having a kind teacher is a pro. I didn't get Science Guyz, but I still did pretty well in the class by attending office hours and her lectures. She can be kinda quiet sometimes.
Dr. Bakas is not a bad professor, but she does teach like she has never seen the exam before. This class is very difficult, mostly due to the nature of the exams and how the questions are asked. I would recommend getting ScienceGuyz and going to other professors' office hours. If possible, take another professor, but she's not horrible.
im a nikki defender y'all! she is a very sweet woman who unfortunately cannot overcome the extreme failings of them chem department. i had science guyz, which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. regardless of who u take uga chem sucks, and ill admit bakas isn't the best but she isn't really given great material and shes very young
Gen Chem 1 isn't hard if you already took AP chem in high-school, as it covers much of the same ground. Bakas is kind and does practice questions in class, but I can see how her teaching style may be a con if you have no previous chem experience.
She is not the worst teacher ever, but compared to literally any other option she sure feels that way. Most of my friends and I relied on ScienceGuyz and Jensen's office hours because she is not good at explaining things and she freezes anytime you ask a question. I think she means well and is very nice, but if possible go with any other option.
Badddddd at teaching please avoid…. I was failing the class with her, dropped, and retook with Begley this semester with SG tutoring and literally made an A. Take any other option besides her; she doesn't know what she's doing and just seems unsure at all times. Incompetent and a shame to be teaching students who want to learn Chemistry at UGA
As I begin this next semester, I am reminded of what an awful teacher she was. I don't believe in having to purchase external support for a class, but if I had not had not had Science Guyz, I would have done significantly worse in this class. She is a horrible lecturer (um every other word) and she does not prepare you for the departmental exams.
Does not spend time explaining anything, so if you haven't taken AP Chem and are unfamiliar with the concepts do not take her class. She just flies through the content. Seems very disoriented/disorganized, but does practice questions in class which is somewhat helpful? Does not answer questions very well either.
You will not learn anything in this class and will have to teach it all to yourself. All she does is lecture and put up practice problems. I feel so unprepared for the tests and had to buy science guys. BEWARE!! If you get this professor I advise switching out. If you didn't take AP chem you will know nothing.
Y'all are too mean to this woman. She is doing the best with what the chem department has given her, no she isn't the most amazing professor in the world but just pay attention, actually do the readings, and study the recitations for the exam and you should be fine. I have an A rn and this is what I've been doing with no science guyz or tutoring.
We need to give Nikki a break! I believe a large majority of her poor reviews are due to her students' inability (or unwillingness) to study and understand the concepts out of class, which is to be expected for nearly every STEM class! She explains the concepts and the practice problems clearly. I really don't have many complaints.
I think a rock could teach you chemistry better. She can't answer questions or explain anything, lectures move a mile a minute. One time it took her over half the class to solve one problem because she kept getting it wrong and the girl behind me started crying.
Had I wrote this review earlier in the semester I would have stated this is a sure do not take prof and to attempt to transfer. I still believe you would be better off with other professors, as we had a substitute professor for one lecture and everything made much more sense. If you do find yourself stuck with bakas be prepared to teach yourself
Above average professor in the chem department. I took AP Chem in high school, so most of this is review and I have an A as of right now. If you didn't, definitely buy scienceguyz. She lectures fast and will try to explain to you if you have a question. It's also a weed out class so you're gonna have to put in some effort.
A lot of these reviews are from when she was new and was still getting her footing, but from my experience, she was great! Her lectures were easy to understand, and she's pretty good about answering questions. She post all her annotated slides to elc too. Chemistry is just a hard class, no matter your prof. you will spend lots of time studying.
Bakas was a pretty standard professor. She does teach a massive standardized subject, but she does well at explaining prepared topics. Sometimes she's not the best at answering questions.
Literally mumbles the entire lecture, doesn't know the answer to literally any question that isn't on a lecture slide, and does not care that her class averages are always
I think she isn't as bad as others on here make her seem. Her lectures are pretty standard for any Gen Chem 1 class and she had pretty detailed slides on everything you need to know for the exams. Lecture attendance is mandatory through TopHat assignments daily (1/2 participation grade 1/2 accuracy). 2 assignments a week excluding test weeks.
She's very nice and willing to answer questions, keeps you up-to-date on what to know for exams. Its a weed out class. Chem dept. at UGA sucks, get ready for crazy long exams. There will be lots of work to review- most of it is required and graded on accuracy. One of the only chem lecturers I know who takes tophat for ACCURACY.
The UGA chemistry department is already difficult for many. On top of that, Dr. Bakas, does not explain chemistry well, leaving many students to struggle. However, outside of class she is very kind and understanding and very nice when it comes to any issues you have with the course. If you want to understand what you're doing, don't take her class.
Dr.Bakas was genuinely one of my favorite lecturers I had this semester. She takes simple, logistic steps to explain concepts, and I understood even the hardest concepts because of her. She is super nice and willing to help outside of class. Don't believe this is a weed-out class; it's most definitely not. Put in the work and you will be rewarded.
Genchem is hard no matter the professor. Dr Bakas isnt amazing at explaining, but she gets it done. For me, Science guyz was a must no matter the professor. If your professor is bad, you can still get an A or A+ if you put in the work and do science guyz. Only annoying thing is that she counts top hat questions as half accuracy half participation.
She lectures very quickly and doesn't go through all the stuff that will be on the exams.
Dr. Bakas was a kind person, but was a really terrible professor. She was really bad at explaining concepts and often felt like she was doing the bare minimum to try and help us understand. Her answers to questions were often extremely confusing. Made a lot of concepts harder for everyone. Wouldn't take her unless you have strong chem background.
This class was just unnecessarily difficult, we all know UGA chem is a weed out course so imagine adding a subpar professor on top of that fact. This should have been a relatively easy intro to STEM for me, but I had to slave away just for an A- in here. I wouldn't have passed if I didn't buy science guys and watch all of their videos, avoid Bakas.
Everyone says she is bad but I disagree. I attained an A without Science Guyz, and I don't have a strong chem background. Baka's taught everything we needed to know and her office hours helped out with explaining the details. Was this an easy class? No, but as long as you take time to learn and study outside the class, it's fine. She's great!
I think you should run
she doesn't really know what she's doing and you're better off not going to class and teaching everything to yourself. wouldnt recommend her for chemistry
Dr. Bakas is really not that bad. She just stands there and lectures but if you ever have questions, she answers them nicely and responds fast to emails. Not much you can do with such a huge class size. Chem is hard in general and you need to study so much outside of class. Unfortunate only because accuracy matters in the attendance questions.
I think she was a good professor. Chemistry is difficult, no matter who you have. For Chem 1211, you have reading checks due Monday and Recitations due Saturday. There are also at-home quizzes before tests. She annotated slides during class and explained problems well. Her slides are probably the most descriptive. She is just a little quiet.
I honestly learned most of chemistry outside the class. I only showed up to class to get the top hat points. She does post all her annotated lectures so that was good to use as a study material. There isn't much she can do since most of the chemistry work is outside her control. Overall, her annotated lectures was the only thing I used.
I wanted to get hit by an e-scooter otw to this class so I didn't have to go. She goes fast and doesn't explain well, I would take another professor if possible. Chem is hard in general though so it's not entirely her fault. Also beware of when recitations, reading checks, and readiness quizzes are due bc those snuck up on me, and buy science guyz.
Nikki Bakas is not a bad lecturer, it's just that the UGA chem department sucks. She spends lectures going over notes and walking through some practice problems. Attendance is graded through tophat, half on accuracy half on just being there. She is super sweet and will help out at the end of class. Be ready to put in the effort for this class.
