Had her in her first year, I really liked her a lot.
tips for success: prepare for presentations, limit filler use, design concise power points, participate in class, see presentation coach! On quiz do not memorize vocab know when to use techniques and why because you will have to apply reading in a very comprehensive quiz
Tough, but fair. Very useful class. This class really helped with my stage fright issues, and general confidence in groups.
Would not recommend this heinous **** to my worst enemy.
This class has definitely helped in terms of speaking, presenting myself, being professional, etc. It kept pushing me out of my comfort zone. However, the 2 profs seem very tense and awkward, and I wish they were more charismatic and easygoing.
Areas for development: Works DIRECTLY off of the rubric. FOLLOW THE RUBRIC. If you do not like structure this professor is not for you, switch. Positive: Emphasizes relaxed, conversational speaking which, in actuality, is an important skill.
Show up to ALL the classes and DO NOT BE LATE. Forsake all creativity in the interest of satisfying the rubric. Honestly, a shrill, obnoxious woman. She cares more about format than she does content. Unfortunately, I haven't heard great things about Epstein either, but after Graves I would give her class a shot.
Good lecturer. Assignments take a lot of time outside of class. Grading criteria can be very ambiguous at times. Seems like a lot of subjectivity in grading assignments. It's hard to figure out what she wants for assignments, but when you do it's easy to do well.
If you can, take BCOMM with Epstein or the other professor instead. Graves seems rather subjective in grading one person vs. another, and it doesn't always seem like there's a reason to her grading. You will still do well, but you'll spend most of the semester not really sure of what you're actually going to finish with.
Her grading is really tough, and there's a lot of subjectivity. For instance, if you don't speak up in class, you might get points off with one passive voice, whereas others may walk away with four. Worst professor in business school.
She's honestly great. If you go into BCOMM with an open mind, prepare to actually learn valuable information which you can apply to interviews and group presentations throughout your career.
Take Epstein. If you get stuck with Graves, go to office hours, make sure you hit every detail on the grading rubrics, participate in every class, don't be late, and complete all extra credit. Participation is not a guaranteed 25% of your grade. The TAs will mark every time you speak, and you need to make two comments to get full credit each day.
Just dont take her class if you dont know how to please her
Graves gives lots of guidance throughout the semester and has clear expectations. There are clear guidelines and rubrics to follow. I found the large number of TAs she has to be quite helpful as well. There is always someone you can go to for help and to get feedback. I like how she takes into consideration how much your improve along the way too.
Excellent class. Professor is deeply passionate about teaching and enthusiastic about the material. One on one with students she is an extraordInarily compassionate and lovely person.
Even though this class is mandatory, I could not speak highly enough about Professor Graves. There are group projects and presentations. Professor Graves always is willing to give feedback on how to improve throughout the course. She genuinely wants you to learn and grasp communication skills that will be used in any job, no matter profession.
Avoid Graves at ALL COSTS. Take either Epstein or whatever teacher they have. This class has been a nightmare for me throughout the semester It makes me nervous and anxious about taking this class and that also influenced my presentations, which is pretty much the class is about. I learned more from the assignment's rubric and TA, than taking class
She takes her job way too seriously. I took this class at 8:30am and all I wanted to do was chill during the class, but that was not possible. Also she's kinda weird. If you can fake it like you care and do well in the class presentations you should do good enough to get a grade your satisfied with. Be ready to do dumb homework though.
I think this class is simply useless. It is not business communication and I think the material in this class is not useful in our future career! Furthermore, Graves assigned TA the work to grade homework which I think is totally nonsense! Also, be aware about the presentations, if she doesnt like some ideas you mentioned and can grade you badly
I cant imagine why this class is called business communication! This class is full of empty words and useless infos related to quixotic issues in our society! It is completely not related to business and Emory should not make this class mandatory for business students!
Terrible class. The class is hard for no reason. The information learned is all common sense and pointless. The TAs are cocky, and grade strictly for no reason. They like to act important and smart. There are no clear rubrics or grading standards. They take off points for random things and change their grading for different people. Avoid Graves.
Your grade in this class depends on who your ta is. Be luck and pray for a good a light grader, or else, you will be done in this class. Avoid Graves, she is terrible
Her method of encouraging debate and discussion is "either agree with me or face being ostracized". I expected a certain level of nuance in this seminar about Social Justice in America, but no, I just received recycled points from Instagram packaged as "original". It's funny that for a social justice seminar, both the teacher and TA are white. Wow!
This class supposed to be easy but she makes so SOOOOO unnecessarily hard. She is the worst professor I have ever had.
GET ME OUT OF THIS CLASS. This class is insane. The projects are unnecessarily long and are graded consistently low. The midterm that she just assigned is ridiculously long and I am positive this class will be my first grade lower than an A at Emory. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Midterm projects aren't even complete yet, but we are working on final projects already. There are strict requirements for our presentation, yet Prof. Graves doesn't follow the same rules when using presentations. This is "Business Communications" class, but the communication among the TAs and professor is horrible, and instructions are not clear.
Nikki Graves is the BEST!! I dont know why theres negative comments but shes literally amazing
Professor Graves doesn't deserve all the hate. She's amazing! People are grading her poorly because they don't like the class or their groups for projects but the professor is awesome.
I feel bad for people who dont get to take Professor Graves because they are missing out on one of the best parts of the Emory experience. She tries so hard to help her students and really works hard to connect and make a difference.
The final project is irrelevant to business communication and more towards marketing. She puts excessive emphasis on it and grading is very inconsistent. Try not to take her class.
I cannot begin to emphasize how much I hate this professor and this stupid class. First, she doesn't even teach her own class. Secondly, she's rude for no reason. She and her TAs need to have more meetings because apparently, they all have different grading standards. DONT TAKE IT!!!! lIterally, the worst thing I've done at Emory so far. Horrible!
Prof. Graves is very sarcastic and demeaning. I was told she was bad coming into the class and she even failed to meet my low expectations. Take one of the other professors
She's rude and condescending. Also, she doesn't even teach her own class. Do yourself a favor a take someone else.
Graves is honestly super sweet and funny. She has bad reviews but I feel like it's because BCOMM as a class sucksnot her. The majority of my class time was spent with my group / TA anyway. My friends with the other professors seemed to have it worse (they had quizzes whereas we didn't.) You will get an A if you follow directions & do work!
Rude and wants you to fail. Do yourself a favor and stay far away from this prof
Professor Graves is an AMAZING professor. She was always sure to motivate us and pushed us to places I didn't even know I could go. Bcomm is a core course and it was one of the courses that took a lot of time and dedication towards, but I would do it all over again with Prof. Graves.
I feel bad saying this but take another professor. Other professors are way less harsh at grading and apparently more enjoyable. Prof Graves is quirky and seems nice but please don't take her for this class. I spent so much time and effort working on presentations for it and it is still my lowest grade. I mean do what you want but it's a warning.
Extremely disorganized. Can wait up to two months to get a grade back. Even then, still have to chase TAs around for days until I get any feedback. Professor overcompensates for this joke of a class by grading harsher than any professor in the entire university. TAs and professors have different standards and clearly do not communicate. Run away.
absolutely terrible professor. the class has so much potential but she just makes it awful because she'd rather have you suck up to her than actually learn anything.
Professor Graves is one of the nicest, most amazing Professors in the B-School. I'm not surprised there are bad reviews because often times students struggle with competently writing/creating slide decks. Her class has prepared me the most for the "real world." As long as you follow rubrics, come to class, and know how to write, you'll get an A.
Professor Graves honestly does care about her students and can be very kind. I think the negative reviews on here stem from harsh grading and too much subjectivity. Bcom can be an annoying class, and I understand people's complaints, but don't panic and jump to too many conclusions about Graves! You might end up being pleasantly surprised.
I made an account just to say that this woman is awful by every metric. Her grading criteria is about as clear as Flint Michigan water and she wants you to kiss her ass to get an A. If there is an argument against tenure she's the main contention, and never in my lifetime would I ever consider taking this class again.
She was not a great teacher. She could be pretty rude to students and was often condescending if students tried asking any questions. She was a tough grader, which would be okay if she clearly defined her grading criteria, but much of her grading was extremely subjective and not well explained.
Graves is the most over hated professor in the Business School. Yes, the class is presentation based, so your grade is heavily weighted on a few things, but the key is getting to know Graves. If she knows you on a personal level, you're much more likely to get an A.
Graves is definitely over-hated. My friends in the other two good-rated professors' classes all got lower grades than me. Remember to follow her instruction and check the boxes, especially with the written stuff. The class was mostly group work-based and I loved my team and ta. Agreed that she could say "mean" words to students.
Prof. Graves is a professor that makes you wonder how she got the job. During the semester that I took the class, she had a case of improper classroom conduct that reached her higher-ups. Apparently, she had family issues that year and was really stressed and said some pretty rude things to a male student publicly... in front of the whole class.
I don't understand why people don't like Graves. The class sucks but its the same format for all sections/professors in the department. She does not curve down and almost everyone I know in her class has a higher grade than the people taking BCOM from other professors. She is very kind and if you can read and follow directions you will be fine.
Most people get As. She's really not that hard
Graves, in my opinion, is a very fair grader even if the criteria isn't always clear. With that being said, the course is primarily based on group work and public speaking which can be difficult. It also depends heavily on if you get a good TA or not. It's hard to get her out of class. Just do your best to incorporate her feedback into your work.
Graves was an amazing professor for bcomm. Don't understand why people hate on her so much. Just do your work and you will get an A. Yes, your group and your TA matter a lot, but that's the nature of all bcomm. Overall, would def. recommend.
Professor Graves is honestly one of my favorite teachers at Emory. She is engaging and friendly, and she gives us plenty of time to turn in our assignments. The midterm and final are group projects, so make sure you work ahead and you'll be fine.
grades unfairly for personal presentation and doesn't account for others' experience or lack of public speaking skills. grades midterm presentation harshly too and gives everyone in your group the same grade. will grade lower if you ask for a regrade. tries to act nice, cool, and hip but it comes off in the wrong way. seems superficially nice.
No matter who you take, Bcomm is an absolute pain. This class is supposed to help you improve presentation skills, but tbh, it completely hurt my confidence and made me feel worse than before I took the class. I think graves is a very fair grader. Just get ready to be judged on every little thing you do while presenting. Lots of group work
Stay away
Professor Graves is the best! While the class can be kinda intense, she clearly cares about her students and wants to help us improve our speaking ability. So quirky and fun!
This class teaches you many things that are applicable to your professional career, which should ultimately be why you are at Goizueta. The midterm and final are hard and you may not receive the grade you want, but are grades what we are really after? Would recommend for anyone actually trying to get anything out of BCOM. Graves is great.
Graves is quirky but a great prof - visit her office hours and actually take her feedback. entitled students who think BComm is an easy A complain about workload, when what we do in an entire semester what would take less than a week in a consulting job. best class to prepare you for the real world!
What a joke of a class, both prof and TAs will grade your work, grades will depend on which TA you get assigned to, midterm was a consulting presentation for the lead TAs family friend - go figure, Lead TA shifted their team's presentation date due to a members baseball game - wdym the season's OVER. Take Epstein. The 3 reviews below is false.
Graves is really an inspiration, because if she can become a tenured professor at a prestigious university, I can be the president of the United States of America.
Bruh people are bitter. Basically everyone I know in this class got an A. Did this class stress me out? Yes. Did my group suck? Kinda. But did I learn? Yeah. Do I think I got the grade I deserved? Also yes. BCOM sucks no matter who you take it with. Just do good work and you'll be fine.
I know someone who reported Professor Graves to the dean of the school- that should tell you how awful she is. She is kinda like a mix between bad middle school theater teacher & that one vindictive english teacher who gets too friendly with the highschool jocks. ...just stay away
There is no clear grading criteria, and its all based on her personal opinion of the students. If you ask for your assignment to be regraded she will grade lower.
Honestly, Graves is fine and the class isn't *that* bad. It's just that your grade is predominantly determined by your assigned TA for your group/written assignment. If you're lucky and end up with good TAs, the class is a breeze. If not, well... good luck.
Honestly BCOM is hard, but Graves made it bearable. People are just bitter about having to do work. She doesn't curve down, and most people get an A. She's actually a really sweet person and will do her best to help the students.
Brutally honest opinion. BCOMM as a class is hard but Graves is probably the best option all the other teachers are not too great. Its not too hard to get an A just check in with her and the TAs at time and you will be good. Be ready to put in the work for this class as it's unavoidable. If you are in a bad group be prepared to work hard and lead.
Pretty nice and fun professor. She doesn't give you a lot of direction on cases but she has good TAs. She takes a long time to grade even though she has a lot of TAs. Doesn't give feedback on papers on time. TAs are very helpful! You have to meet outside of class with your group if you want to pass! This class can take a lot of your time!
I love the Professor Graves. Only issue is that class is tough
Dr. Graves made me feel some kinda way.
I learned a lot from Dr. Graves. She's a straight shooter, doesn't take any bs, and will push you. I wasn't always happy, but I learned a lot. She is fair and approachable.
Take Graves class. You won't regret it.
I like Graves. She's a cool person, gives good feedback during office hours, and is very approachable. I think there's a disconnect between how difficult this class is and how she approaches teaching it. I kind of felt like we were thrown into assignments with no clear instruction. Still, she is honestly a generous grader and doesn't curve you down
I love Graves! She cares so much about her students and loves to make personal connections! The nature of BCOM is all project-based, so it prepares you for working in any setting! Best class I have taken at Emory.
Graves is honestly a pretty fun person but very confusing as a professor. A little disorganized and chooses clear favorites who automatically get A's and everyone else doesn't because of the curve. Participate and talk to her before/after classes at the beginning of the semesters to get an A.
great teacher. you are heavily graded on final project. don't be intimidated by her.
There is no intellectual depth in Graves' teaching or her existence. The class itself is a joke, with grades based on favoritism and the random opinions she has unprofessionally formed about her students. If you have conflicts with the TAs or if they simply dislike you, your performance in the class is likely to suffer unfairly.
To be honest I find most of the reviews on RMP misleading. No matter which prof, the class will be super annoying and tedious and graded mostly on 2 presentations and a speech. Of the 3 options Graves is the best/nicest. I got screwed on my random group assignment but still was fine because she includes enough individual assignments to boost you.
She teaches you worse than nothing. You would be laughed out the room in the real world if you used the slide and speaking techniques she wants. Extremely disorganized, TAs have too much power, not responsive to feedback.
Graves is a wacky but nice person and a decent professor. There's a lot of group work and a good TA is super helpful. Go to office hours a lot to get her input and understand her feedback. Also, practice presentations a ton before day of. Her lectures felt kinda out there, but she's clear and fun. Pay attention to the due dates and stay focused.
I feel like all the complaints about her are about the structure of the course, which I also agree was terrible but it's not like you have much of a choice. The group you're assigned to determines your entire grade, and so do the TAs so you better hope they like you. She will tell you what she's looking for if you just ask.
I learned so much about professional communications from Professor Graves. She presented clear frameworks and emphasized the importance of framing arguments that resonate with each audience. Plus her bird stories are hilarious! I definitely recommend her highly for 365!
Professor Graves puts the 'G' in Goizueta!
Don't buy into the negative hype. She's a strong professor. This is a useful and practical class.
I thought the class would be useless because it's Bcom. The skills that I learned in it helped me get an internship that led to a full-time offer, though. I appreciate it now.
Good professor, loved her class.
She provides clear guidelines and rubrics. The feedback is straight forward and seems fair. Helpful class overall.
Very reasonable professor. She will accommodate your requests if she can do so without being unfair to other students. My team asked her to extend a deadline on an assignment, and she did so.
Grades fairly, useful material, overall a good experience so far. Gives clear guidance I especially like that she gives us plenty of class time to work with our teams.
Keep with class. Follow the directions. Do the work. Recognize the usefulness. You'll be fine.
Useful class in retrospect, good prof. She will hold you to a high standard, be warned! Wish I had taken it more seriously when I took it.
I can really tell she cares about her assignments and students. The work is beneficial and the class is fun.
I am pleasantly surprised by this class! It has already proven to be useful. The professor is supportive and wants students to do well.
All 365 classes have multiple team projects, there's no getting out of that. I was having a difficult time getting my team members to do the work. I asked her for advice, and she guided me through having a tough conversation with some team members. The team is now working much better. I will use this experience in future team projects
The class is time consuming, challenging, and 100% worth it. Some people like to whine about how much work it is. Not sure why they are in the bschool.
Encouraging and helpful professor. She motivated me to do my best. I didn't think that I would like the class, but it was my favorite. Learning to tell STAR stories made interviewing less stressful and helped me get my dream internship.
I learned so much. She helped my team work through some difficult dynamics. I appreciated her support and guidance. She knows her craft.
