This was a fun class. She's very liniant and helps you out as long as you keep her informed. She's really anal abaout absenses (3 and your grade is lowered one grade).I don't think that's necessary, we're all in college and as long as the projects are completed there is no reason to be so picky. I'd take another class with her in the future.
i love her...she is so much fun
Niku is a great artist. She is very helpful and insightfull and he requirements for the class are fair and so is her grading. She is a good teacher and is very patient with her students and their abilities.
besides being an easy class, she manages the class like a kindergarten. if you have great desire to learn real Arts, you will be disappointed by her rude and shallow behaviour and taste in Arts.. but if you take this class for fun /good grade, this is the right class for you.
niku presents herself as a strong and intelligible instructor, as well as a very unique and passionate artist. im thankful i took class because ive gained so much knowledge in art itself. b/c of this class, ive decided to take on art history. one of the "must have" professors at csun. please take.
Niku is very interested in what she teaches.the exams are easy, but absence and lateness and photo assignments are taken seriously. However, she insults and makes fun of Male students ALOT.She manages class like kinderGarten and if you disagree with any of her favourit photographers or images, she WILL get on your nerve every single moment since then.
She was an awesome professor. There were about 6 assignments and a final project. You have to purchase a 35mm camera for this course. I really enjoyed taking this class, Niku really expressed concern for students and enthusiasm for art.
Excellent, excellent professor!!!! Very enthusiastice about the class she teaches and and will go out of her way to help.
Niku is a hyper teacher who makes this deal for you : " I give you easy assignments and exam, instead you should stand my childish behavior and let me insult you and play favorites in the class ".If you are REALLY ENTHUSIASTIC about Arts, you will be disappointed with her shallow behavior and taste in Arts.but if you just want easy grade, take her!
She makes deal for everything and her class is very hard, also a childish behavior. I do not know why other students says it easy. Her class need a lot of work so I do not recommend her at all, she ask for exams for her class. Therefore she will let you spend more time on her work which result fail in other classes. Do not take her class at all ...
I liked photography all my life but after I attended her class photography now is the last thing I think of… Gosh couldn’t imagine it’s that worse
Do not take her class. This class required a lot of work therefore don't waist time with her class because it is a GE class and is not worth to do all this work, I mean crazy work that she ask for
Niku is very well educated and hysterical. She says at the beginning that students will get out of class what they put into it and that's entirely true. I love her class, she's extremely helpful, and I will really miss learning from her!
Niku is a great teacher, and really tries to relate to the students. Is the "crazy artist" type, and it makes class fun. She wants her class to do well, and is an all around good teacher. Fun, simple class and you actually do learn alot. The people who gave unhappy faces are just not very smart- in order to pass the class, all you gotta do is listen
An amazing teacher who truly loves photography. A bit qwirky, but makes class fun and takes pride in helping her students. If you're not into photography or have trouble with criticism this class might not be for you (hence why a lot a people are bad mouthing her). I got an A and have since become a professional photographer. Thanks Niku!
if you do not have any Knowledge about art or photography do not take her because she will let you do a lot of work therefore if your major in Engineering or health Science or any Professional study. Do not take her, she will waist your time by taking a lot of pictures and other crazy things
Do not take her, you will do Crazy work. If you feel that you have much time to spend in photography take her, otherwise do not take her at all, you will do a lot of work
Do not take her, you will do a lot of work
Niku is a very interesting professor. She has great passion for the class. I recommend her highly. Just put in the time and you will do great.
Niku is a great teacher. You will have to do work, but this is a university, so you can expect to do work in any class. She keeps the work fun and interesting. She is extrememly helpful and is always available to help. You learn so much in her class. CSUN has an AMAZING art dept. so don't expect to do no work and get an A. I love Niku shes great :)
This class is very difficult for a 100 level class. There is alot of work, alot of reading, and attendance is necessary, but it is worth is. She is a fantastic professor. She loves what she teaches, she cares about her students and she cares about the work you do. Take her if really want to learn something about photography.
She gives a lot of work but its fair with grading. If you do all the work you will receive a good grade. She loves teaching photography. She is very helpful and wants you to succeed. You will definately get a lot out of the class.
best class ever u need to attend class but hey its never boring and she makes u see the world in a different perspective i personally dont like to do much but this class was fun and u really learn how to take pictures, the pain tho is having to develop the pics if u use a SLR (regular camera) so just go with a digital SLR best way to go easy a pie
Great teacher , the class ended up being a lot of work , but overall I learned a lot. She's patient , funny , and you can tell she actually cares about her students. I learned a lot in her class and would recommend Kashef to anyone who's interested in photography. As long as you show up to class and do the assignments and you'll be fine.
comment below is pretty hilarious and true.
I really enjoyed her enthusiasm for photo and learned alot in this class. Great teacher. The class is straightforward, come to class, try hard, do the work and you'll do just fine. If you have questions, she's always willing to help you. I found her to be encouraging and continued with photo after the class.
Wow. What a waste of my time. The final notebook was so useless considering that there's nothing to put in it. She has her favorites which gets annoying. It's funny how she criticizes everyone's art but I have not once seen any of her art. Weird. Easy class, too much useless work, annoying professor.
I took this class with 2 other teachers before and was completely uninterested. This teacher really helped make this a fun semester. You have to work and show up to class. The notebook was pretty easy to do i kep class and reading notes and ideas in it. I guess if you didnt use it all semester it would seem like a waste but it was helpful for me.
She is extremely talented and helpful to all students. She goes out of her way to assist others and takes time to go over assignments in a wonderfully clear manner. She changed my view of photography and strengthened my skills.
Best teacher at CSUN! Makes you take a lot of photos and "work" but that's college. G-d forbid you actually learn something! If you are a good photographer she will make you better! You will analyze every frame. Why this image? How can i make it stronger. Dont listen to all the complainers they wanted an easy A with no work.Took 151 with her also
This was a fun class, I had to take alot of pictures but it was worth it because I got alot better at photography during the semester. It is a big class and I wish they would make it smaller. Too many students and that may be why people complain. The teacher cares about her students and met with me whenever I needed extra help.
Loved Niku! She is extremely helpful and passionate about what she does. A lot of other photo professors I've had haven't really given me artistic insight on my work. Niku totally does and opens up a whole other field for you if you are interested in photography! You'll learn A LOT in the class if you put effort into it and actually go.
OMG.. WHAT A WONDERFULLLL PROFESSOR THAT WILL OPEN YOUR EYES TO SEE THE WORLD IN A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE!!!!! HIGHLY RECCCOMMEND!!!
Really a good teacher, but her ego is something that she has to deal with. She thinks she knows everything, it's her duty to know. But don't be an ass to photo students that aren't your students. She doesnt respect other teacher students at all.
She's helpful and cares about the students. My work and the rest of the class have gotten better since the beginning of the semester and I am going to minor in photography because of it. Highly recommend.
If you wanna take b&w photography take it with Niku. She's so much fun and is always willing to help you better your skills. Expect to spend at the minimum $100 on supplies and about 100 hours in the lab developing and printing your pictures so only take the class if you have time to dedicate to it. Definitely worth it, especially with her.
Niku is one of the best photography teachers. She teaches you so much about the different aspects of photography & focuses on technique. My skills with photography have become better since her class. If you take this class, be sure you have enough time. You'll spend 15+ hours on each assignment, developing, printing, & taking photos.
Good professor, you WILL work hard in any of her classes. She pushes you just as much as she pushes herself. She doesn't cut corners when grading and critiquing but its all done to make you achieve what you can. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL YOUR MATERIALS AND ARE PREPARED.
Niku's class is a little tough for 100-level. You must have a DSLR camera (Rebel, D3100) which will cost you over $600. Sometimes the assignments are a tad vague, but not too difficult to understand. Your grade will come from your photos and your final which is pretty easy. Just be prepared to spend a lot of time taking photos!
great as a teacher, even better as an artist and mentor
Very helpful and knowledgeable about photography. Very invested in her students. However, very condescending and rude as well. Acts as if she is an amazing, well-known artist, although she really, really, is not.
Senior Projects is MANDATORY. I don't know if she is the only teacher available for the course, but she's kind of tough. She assigns A LOT of work towards the end, expects them to be done at a ridiculous time frame and kind of forces her opinion on you. Don't expect to have too much freedom on designing your OWN portfolio.
I loved this professor. I thought the class was difficult when I took it. After graduating, I now use all the materials we prepared in class and produce art exhibitions using the experience I gained. Recommend! She will go out of her way to help you.
I failed this class because this class requires a lot of time taking photos which got in the way of my studying (the situation was to either waste time taking photos or fail this class or to fail my math exam and get kicked out of school for failing it) so we know which option I chose. I'm going to retake the class but avoid her.
she really helpful and makes sure everyone understands what you have to do.
I honestly don't think I would take her again. She could be nice enough, or extremely rude with a humorous guise. The work load is really incredible. Do not take this class if you don't have a ton of money to spend or a ton of time. It WILL take away from your other classes and is extremely costly- especially for all the prints she wants.
She makes you do lots of things, but you can really learn from her.
I am on the fence about Niku. She is definitely knowledgable about her subject and will give you good advice, but when I took her class you never knew what you were gonna get. Some days she was happy and funny but other days it's like a bomb was about to go off. Didn't really like her critique style either.
People say a lot of things about Professor Kafesh. She's a tough professor no doubt, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't learn anything this semester. Sure she's got some sass, but it adds to her character. She also cares a ton for her students and will go out of her way to help you. She grades tough, but she's worth the time.
she was very nice. super nice! one of the nicest professors I've ever had. if you're having trouble just talk to her and she's very understanding. very great class. i learned a lot.
not the most professional in conducting class, take the class if you need credits since its really laid back but don't take this teacher if you really want to learn photography because you will get a very watered down introduction. However she does have moments when she can be very intellectual and helpful.
You might be a little scared of her at first but fear not, Niku is very passionate of her craft. She will make sure you learn everything you possibly can about photography. She is tough on the grading but ask for guidance and she will help you in any way she can. She scares because she cares. Take the class if you really want to learn.
Some days she was informative but that didn't last too long, she goes on tangents the majority of the time. She didn't post the class syllabus until the end of the semester and was annoyed when we asked for it. Doesn't really make the effort to respond to student emails. Do not buy the textbook, she never mentioned it once in our class.
Nike knows what she's talking about and she will definitely teach you a lot about photography. However, she is extremely rude and condescending. She also expects a lot from her students. I would spend approximately 6-10 hours a week in the photo lab in addition to class time. I wouldn't recommend her if you can avoid her.
Niku is a really cool person but I would not recommend her for someone thats not a CTVA major. Even if your a CTVA major I wouldn't recommend because expect you to be a pro in a couple weeks of having the class. You would only know your grade at the end of the semester. If you like being stressed out then this class is perfect for you. EXPENSIVE!
You're basically on your own with your classmates to figure things out because she RARELY replies to her emails. Can be very intimidating and sometimes condescending, but if she sees effort you'll be ok. I had a problem with my camera the entire semester and my pictures weren't always ok but I still got an A. Expect to spend HOURS in the darkroom.
I've taken photo many times before , but she definitely picks favorites and favors them. She probably will not like you at first and tells you that she is "pushing you harder", but in reality is just giving you tons of attitude to put you down and make you feel your worst. Would not recommend. Art should be more subjective that what she makes it.
Professor Niku doesn't hold back. She strives for her students to be high-quality photographers. She expects students to deliver their best work for each assignment. At first, the course sounds intimidating. But, you will surprise yourself when you see how better your photography images are. She's a good professor & person. Very compassionate.
Shes a pretty good professor, funny too. One thing that she was bad at was responding to emails so try and speak to her in person instead. I had fun in her class, she explains pretty well how to work the camera and how to do fun tricks with it as well.
Hard to read at times. She seems grumpy, although I think she's going through a lot of stuff in her personal life that she sometimes brings up in class. A lot of meditation and talking about life (relating to photography, but also unnecessary). A lot of my classmates had similar feelings, too much life refection, less time in the lab.
She is very caring, but she is NOT ORGANIZED. Every class is a mystery, and you are not sure of your grade until the end of the semester. Her projects are fun plus she is very laid back, but it's stressful since you do not get any feedback. I really didn't know what I was doing half the time.
Her classes are mandatory and 9/10 you wont be doing the things she plans to do for that day. She does lecture and they do tend to take up the whole time but that is because she tends to go off on tangents and does guided meditations. The projects are definitley done in crunch time but shes very helpful and gives you advice on how to do well
You might feel intimidated at first but you'll like her soon. She can be tough but that's because she wants you to know everything about photography. I took her class last year and I learned a lot. Do no skip class. She gives you a good grade for your effort and participation. She's also funny and cares a lot about her students.
one word, PATRONIZING.
Ughh. She often goes on long rants and rarely teaches us ANYTHING on the subject. Also, she legit can come off as a really RUDE and patronizing to us at times. I'm gonna love the last day of this class. If you think you can put up with her attitude, then take the class. Otherwise, just choose something else. She doesn't even give you an easy A.
She might seem intimidating at first, but she eventually will open up. There are 4 projects and your class is graded based on those, so there are no tests. A lot of repetitive meditation sessions in class but she means no harm. You won't know your grade until the end of the semester.
Professor was average. She seems to have a lot going on in her personal life which makes it hard for her to have a set schedule for office hours. She doesnt really give you a simple rubric of the projects she wants you to work on. That can be a bit overwhelming bc you dont really know what she is looking for. Too much meditation.
This class is very expensive and time consuming, but I appreciate how caring Niku is. She made extended office hours to talk to her about class issues or something personal. She had a lot of mercy on us as online students and actually taught us a lot. She can sometimes be rude out of no where and her due dates felt stressful, but you'll survive.
To summarize Niku's class simply it's expensive, patronizing, and confusing. Expensive, buying film rolls / scans of said rolls since its a film photography class. Patronizing, she will treat everyone in her class like a little kid who's to stupid for their own good. Confusing, constant contradictions in lectures. Grades aren't posted till the end.
Niku is incredibly patronizing. She finds a way to put you down even when giving you a compliment. She brings her radically liberal political views and insets them into things that are not at all political. She constantly contradicted herself and couldnt begin to understand any other perspective. Overall, rude, close minded, and self centered.
These reviews dont lie when they say shes patronizing. She treated us like we were stupid whenever we had any questions and never admits when shes wrong. Definitely a strict grader
Her deadlines can be a bit stressful but stay on track, don't fall behind and you're good! She's honestly a good and knowledgeable professor but can definitely waste your time by going on tangents and coming to class late, Besides that, she gives great feedback and is usually accessible
Insanely knowledgable. Class moves fast and the deadlines would move around a lot. Also a lot of expensive materials. But once you get in the dark room you'll def notice her teaching makes your photos the best ones in there. She builds really good relationships w her students & works with them to help them engage to the class in their own ways.
Since this class is mandatory for CTVA majors, please switch professors asap. She talks way too much and wastes every class by talking about nothing. Students could be in the lab working on assignments instead of her lecturing about unnecessary things. She also gets sidetracked a lot while talking. Take another professor if you can!!!!
She can be short/impatient with her students, but I learned not to take it personally. At the end of the day, Professors are human too. She means well and truly does care about her students. I learned a lot. She is extremely knowledgeable in what she does and encourages her students to explore their creativity instead of putting them in a box.
She's a good teacher! Very caring and great feedback! However, she did tend to talk a lot during lectures which made us fall behind in assignments. Beware that you'll have to go to the lab outside of class time because her lectures could take up the entire class time. As long as you don't procrastinate, and show Niku your work, you should be okay!
She did cause a slight disruption to the class when she kept saying that it was lab day and became a little preoccupied. If that occurs, kindly remember that she is a human being and do your best to find a way to make up that time. If not, kindly avoid falling behind. You will succeed if you put in the work.
Waitlist to show her anything.Waited about 2 hours to get prints approved before moving forward.Pretty strict but varies. Film rolls ~ $12 each, pack of 100pc paper $110.Very time consuming, don't expect much lab time. Her feedback is always very helpful and she definitely knows what she is doing just needs a better understanding of time value.
she HATES answering questions + very confusing with directions. She showed us images and didn't tell us what 2 do with them, until many started asking. She didn't show us how 2 put illustrator images in photoshop and expected us to know, but she also says we aren't allowed 2 use YT tutorials?when she showed us, she did it the confusing way. thx YT
You will be needing to attend the lab for hours outside of class. There was always little to no time for lab but yet such sudden deadlines. She requires every project to be reviewed by her, but once you ask her for feedback she pushes you away and says she's not in the mood. Very hard to reach outside of class and will degrade your work.
Class is extremely expensive, would recommend avoiding in that case if you aren't able to spend the cash on a camera, film or paper. Professor can be rude and condescending. She is very knowlegable but the slightest thing will tick her off and can be very rude if your expressing your opinion or asking a question. Class will stress you out avoid it.
Niku knows what she is doing and is a great photographer, but rude to her students. The class is fine; just show up and try; she wants growth and progress. She often critiques student work expected for the class, but can be rather cutthroat. Also, she does not grade timely, if you don't have thick skin about your creative works, maybe steer clear.
Although the professor was a little condescending at times, they did give useful advice when it came to your work. The professor struggled to maintain organized lectures and gave vague/unclear instructions most of the time. Prepare to be put on the spot and receive harsh but helpful critiques. Take most of the things they say with a grain of salt.
Professor Niku gives very valuable feedback on the work I turn in, that being said she can get kind of picky about things not being done her specific way, which to me kind of devalues the freedom when it comes to art. It's also an expensive class so don't take if you can't afford it.
