(Astron I) EXTREMELY HARD TO UNDERSTAND but she knows her stuff. She prepared Powerpoint presentations for each class and then posted them on WebCT each night for review. I rarely ever used the book. I could've gotten away with not buying it. She tells you everything that will be on the test and prepares study guides. Brace yourself for the accent
took this class at nine am. nearly killed myself. So boring
This class is very interesting. Dr. Nila is a great teacher, you just have problems understanding her at times, but it's nothing terrible. Her tests are very easy and straight forward as long as you pay attention and care. I highly recommend her. "MORE HANDS!"
yeah expect a very harsh accent. the class is structured well though. she posts the slides that she uses in her lectures online (WebCT) which help ALOT!!! i dont think i could've gone through this semester without those slides. i didn't buy a book and i think im gonna push through this class with a B. ok teacher, good teaching structure.
Dr. Nila is really nice and the class is mostly easy and fun. I recommend it for your science requirements
Not easy to understand, trys to make you sit in assigned seating.
She's really fun and easy. gives a lot of good examples and keeps the class interested. Her powerpoint animations are really funny. I wish I could have taken her this semester but schedules conflicted :( now I'm taking Rubins and falling asleep in class. I miss Nila!! Her tests are easy, too!
Nila is a very sweet lady but she is very hard to understand because of her accent. She is very helpful when you go to her office. Nila tends to ramble alot in class and uses childish illustrations in her lectures. Go to class and print off the lecture notes and you will get an A.
I had no trouble understanding her and although she seemed a bit clueless at times, she's a very nice lady who seems to have a general passion towards her job. Her slides/notes are very informative and detailed, she gives you reviews for tests, and her tests are generally pretty easy.
Dr. Nila is one of the sweetest and nicest professors i have ever had! She expects you to study her notes, and if you do, then the tests will be fine. They are difficult sometimes, but if you study, then no problem. I would encourage anyone who is wanting to take astronomy to take from Dr. Nila; You won't regret it! She is enthusiastic about w
She is very sweet. Smiles often quite easy to approach. She works hard to help her students understand subject matter. Tests are very easy and you will do well if you attend all her classes. I would recommend taking her class.
Dr. Nila is a great prof. She gives you the class slide on webCT and her tests are totally from the slides. You don't even look at the book. You use clickers in the class. Pretty easy class, but you do need to study for the tests. Attendance not mandatory but she gives easy pop clicker quizzes a lot and you don't get credit for them if ur not there
Dr. Nila is a very good instructor who encourages her students to ask questions. She gets students involved in class w/ group projects, demostrations and open discussions, she is very friendly and explains things well.
Pretty good prof. She thoroughly explains material in slide shows. Make sure to go to class b/c she always takes attendance! Slide shows are posted on webCT. Pay attention in class b/c sometimes she gives quizzes over the notes after her lecture. Exams are hard though, study her reviews & all slide shows!
Very nice lady, very frustrating teacher. Couldn't answer questions (due to language barrier) Over-explains simple concepts which makes the class drag on and on. No homework, tests are relatively easy and taken straight from slides, which are posted on WebCT. Need to attend class.. quizzes using Clicker system are given often.Recommend diff. Prof.
Good learning environment. Tells you exactly what is expected, and follows through. She speaks with a thick accent, but also speaks slowly and clearly so everyone can understand. Generally works hard to answer questions thoroughly and tries to help everyone understand. This class should be an easy A for any B student like me.
Extremely nice professor and relatively easy. Lots of opportunity to get extra credit, mandatory attendance. Tests are actually pretty difficult, but they are also the only thing thats hard about the class. A is certainly possible as long as you study for the tests.
If you want to learn anything about astronomy take another teacher. She treats the class like kindergarten. But the tests are relatively hard. Language barrier. I made an A and didn't even have to take the final but that's b/c I'm not an idiot. If you aren't easily annoyed and know how to study take her otherwise not recommended!
Snore. If you can make it to class be prepared for an impossible accent and being bored to death. Don't buy the book. Listen, between you and me don't take her simply because she takes random attendence that accounts for a large part of the grade.
VERY easy class. Yes it is boring but this class is an easy A! the test are not hard at all. Just go over the slides, which she provides, and everything on the test is on the slides! You don't need the book. She takes random attendance but also drops a few in the end. So those who are complaining are the ones who never went to class and expect an A
She is really a good professor and dedicate for her students. I take two classes which are Astro 1445 and 1446. Highly recommendation. If you study, you can get easy A.
Very nice teacher, but be careful about picking her as your instructor. Test are not easy and make up a large portion of your grade. She take attendance daily, and quizzes as well. You will need the book for this class. Promise! I had Crystal for lab, she was very helpful and easy.
Her accent DOES NOT get in the way of her lessons. Attendance is 10% of your grade, taken randomly. Her tests were EASY, straight off of her reviews which you can get the answers from on her powerpoint that she posts online. I'd recommend her. The book is not necessary unless you don't understand her powerpoint.
She's very nice and her accent definitely does not get in the way. She surprises you with attendance so you won't really know when she's going to take it. Tests are pretty hard. Study guides don't help.
Neela is the BEST! If you are looking to learn with a professor that truly cares about her students then this is the professor to take! The material is not too difficult but the tests are! I did not do well with them and Neela was more than happy to meet with me and help me improve! HIGHLY recommend this course and intructor!
Very Easy and attendance is needed because it is 10% of your grade
She is the most helpful teacher. Her accent is thick but it don't let it scare you off, she's more than happy to repeat herself. It's an easy A as long as you go to class and pay attention. She uploads the slides and puts up a review onine before each test. Definitly study and attend the SI sessions because they help. Attendence is 10% of grade.
The tests and labs were easy. During her lectures, she points out what will be on the next test. Never opened the textbook. I didn't have to take the final and got an A in the class.
Dr. Nila is a great teacher. Go to class and you will get A's on her tests. You just might learn a thing or two also.
She uses a clicker to take attendence by daily questions. Fun class she was a great astronomy teacher. Do your homework and study the reviews and you will pass. I got an A so i didn't have to take the final.
She's super sweet and friendly and really wants her students to understand astronomy. I've taken astronomy I and II and trust me, I'm a slacker. but this is interesting stuff and you don't even NEED THE BOOK!!! it's all on the slides. AS long as you do the study guides and attend class for the clicker grades, you'll be fine!!!
Dr. Nila is seriously the best professor. She teaches everything with clarity and cares for her students. Tests are easy, straight from review and drops lowest test grade. TAKE HER!!!!!
Thick accent, little to no book use, random clicker quizzes. Tests are sometimes confusing because she writes them as Yoda would. Do well in the lab portion and you should make a B.
Awesome Prof.
If you study, like really study, not just two hours the night before... you'll make an A. Yes, she has an accent, but she is super sweet & you get used to it! I highly recommend! You watch planetarium shows once a month & they are extra credit on your tests & very interesting! Reading the book is helpful if you're confused, but not necessary.
I am by no means a science person, Easy class as long as you follow her schedule she made for the class. 7 discussion, 3 test(best 2 of 3) and a final. Easy A if you keep up with everything! Great communication from Prof as well!
Dr. Nila is a great professor. She covers a lot of material, but she is willing to help out if you don't understand something. She rarely gives homework, but you do need to show up to class for random clicker quizzes. I definitely recommend this class!
Dr. Nila is great. She does her best to make the class interesting. Attendance isn't mandatory, but there are random quizzes, so it is in your benefit to show up. Not to mention that you miss a lot of information if you miss a day. You have to really study in this class, it won't be an easy A, but Dr. Nila is always very helpful.
Very easy class! She posts all the notes on Blackboard and tells you exactly what to review for the test.
Dr. Nila is great! she really cares about her students and want them to do well in her class. As long as you study well, you will do great. Many extra credit opportunities. She also takes a survey after her tests to get our feedback on the test and to see if she can improve somehow. TAKE HER
Nila opened my mind to the possibilities of space and made the complex subjects understandable. Her astronomy picture of the day is legendary, and she always makes an effort to be there after class for you. Her tests can be tough due to the variety of material, but her power points are thorough and her teaching methods are innovative and fun.
Lovely, sweet professor who truly cares for her students. Has an accent but you will get use to it after awhile. Tests are sometimes tricky but not too hard. Everything is on BB from PPs to test study guides. Provides extra credit opportunities and a few EASY HW assignments. Will require studying for exams but she drops 1 of 4 exams including FINAL
Nila is great, easy class to take for easy credit! Tests are easy if you study. Lectures are easy to listen to and she is there to help you!! In class little quizzes are given and help your grade! Participation is graded however doesnt really hurt your grade if you dont go.
Dr. Nils is really a good Professor. I love her class and her lectures are so amazing. But her wording of the test are confusing. I made a C- because her test was confusing to me. I will recommend to take are class because she really good at teaching and its really interesting. I want to take ASTR 2 but I'm not because of her test. :(
Dr. Nils is really a good Professor. I love her class and her lectures are so amazing. But her wording of the test are confusing. I made a C- because her test was confusing to me. Great professor, very helpful, fun class, I loved using Socrative for knowledge questions and quizzes. Gives reviews before exams. Would take her again!
Dr. Nila is great professor. She does a great job in teaching the Astronomy material to the class. She does a lot of different things to help you understand the concept-group discussion, smartphone question and answer, and other cool things. To get an A, show up to class, write good notes, and study them. Don't need to buy the book-save your $.
Great lecture. Great personality. Fair grading and test. Fun Class. To make an A, show up everyday, write good notes, and study them. Everything in the lecture, is on the test. She doesn't put B.S. question. I love Dr. Nila! Don't buy the book. Everything you need is explain during the class lectures.
Astr 1345 is into to astronomy which I had an interest in but had never had the time to dig into it before. Once you get used to her accent she is a great teacher. Participation was very important and if you miss a day you do miss some easy points.
She is a very good teacher, her tests are pretty straight forward, do the review & homework and there should be no reason you don't pass. Only 3 of the 4 tests count. I would definitely take this class again.
Great class loved both years!
Great lecturer! Must have for liberal arts majors.
Even if you took the first semester with her, this is semester is much tougher. Don't let the first test blindside you. Study. Other than that, Dr. Nila is great.
She rambles and wastes time asking questions instead of actually teaching. Due to the fact that she doesn't actually go over much of the material during class, you're going to have to learn a lot on your own. Don't get me wrong, she's a caring professor. Just a bad teacher. Do not take.
Do Not Take! Unless of course you would rather teach yourself out of a textbook for the exams. Her lectures are filled with pointless demonstrations that are little to no help for the actual tests. There is also only an offer a six total points of extra credit for all four tests. She also makes you get a clicker, which is used often during lectures
Shes Amazing! I know some students might not understand her teaching style because she requires you to do a lot of homework and independent study, however, she is so sweet and easily accessible outside of class. If you are failing all you have to do it talk to her and she will help! But, BEWARE, IF YOU DO NOT STUDY YOU WILL NOT PASS.
Her lectures are pretty interactive and she makes you interact with your neighbors to discuss the lecture. Every now and then she has quizzes that you will need the iClicker to take. Its a solid course and if you take 1345 and then 1346, you will use the same textbook and workbook for both semesters so you get to save a couple of bucks.
Do the work
Good visual representations, the syllabus is really easy, the prof explains well, gives fun group projects in class.
Online class. She posts PPT and study guides but the tests are 100% from test bank. 3 exams plus a final. She drops the lowest test, quiz, and tutorial. She had 2 webinars but they were not that useful but it made her seem more involved. Bi-weekly discussions are 10% of grade, lab is 25%, final is 20%, quiz 10%, tutorials 5%, and tests 30%.
Do not take this professor. The lectures are drawn on about topics that are rarely on the test. Be prepared to teach yourself from the textbook and the study guide. If there is any other professor that teaches this topic take them. Only offers a few points for extra credit on tests, 6 to be exact for all tests
Do not take! You will have to teach all the material to yourself before each exam. However, she does drop the lowest one (4 exams total). She thinks she does a huge favor by offer only 6 points extra credit for the entire semester. Also, the lectures are full of useless information, but you have to show up because of daily clicker participation.
Lecture does not teach you anything for the test. Her tests are very hard, she does drop the lowest test. You have to attend Lecture because she uses clickers for participation. She has a thick accent, little difficult to understand. She is nice, but her class is very hard.
Great professor
A nice lady, but avoid her online classes at all costs. The tests were extremely hard, and the material she provided did nothing to help prepare for them. Eat, breathe, and live the book and maybe you'll have a chance of passing. Had a buddy take her for a freshman class and he had nothing but nice things to say, so she might be better in person.
Her test are really hard. Study guides are useless. Do everything in your power to avoid taking her class. Nice lady though.
Do yourself a favor. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I got a 97 in geology but could not pass a test of hers to save my life. Her lectures are pointless and absolutely all over the place. Labs are all workbook pages and are painfully boring. In class she will lecture on 2+2 but will test you over birthday of the scientist that discovered Saturn's 1st ring
I took her online and LOL SO HER TESTS ARE ON BLACKBOARD WITH A WEBCAM & WITH SOUND AS WELL. Tests are super hard, most people averaged a 50. The Mastering Bio and labs will really help your grade but that's about it. The questions are so random and specific. Don't take her if there's anyone else at all.
Entirely lecture based with weekly homework. Makes an effort to convey the beauty of astronomy while giving info. Visual aids in class are the same as in elementary school, but they really can help your understanding. I don't really get these comments that say she doesn't teach what's on the test, her reviews are broad but the tests are fair.
She uses lockdown browser with the webcam for online testing!!! Not an easy A but definitely doable. Just read the chapters and I really mean read the chapters and study the powerpoints, and you should do fine. The discussions can take a little bit of time cause she really asks you a lot but are very easy.
Great professor and will do anything to help you succeed in her class. That aside, the labs are ridiculously hard. The tests are hard as well. I'm a 4.0 student and barely passed this class. NOT AN "EASY A" class-- requires at least 10+ hours a week just for lab/lecture. Be ready to read, re-read, and read some more! Don't forget to study!
Honestly, she is very hard to understand, stops class often to tell people to put their computers away when we are taking notes on it, and doesn't give you the notes clearly.
Her class was actually very fun and easy to grasp. I only had an issue understanding her on the first day, but after that, she was easy to understand. She is very lecture heavy but she tries to explain very well the concepts of astronomy with examples and exercises, which is very helpful. Study the launchpad hw questions for the test!!!
She is easy to understand. She will pause during lectures and make sure everyone understands by asking clicker questions. The test questions come directly from her powerpoints which she will give you to study. Very easy.
She doesn't respond to emails for weeks. Takes forever to post grades. Homework has no relation to tests. Gives you 50 minutes to take a 50 question test. I loved astronomy before taking her class, she made me hate it.
Dr. Nila was a great professor that looks out for her students. I made Bs and Cs on the exams but I made an A in the class because I kept up with the homework and came to class for the clicker quizzes. She posts the PowerPoints online, but it helps to go to class for participation points.
Dr. Nila is a very sweet lady. She really cares about her students. Tests are challenging but not hard, and homework is easy. She gives a part of her grade based on participation, so it's a good idea to go to class (but it's not mandatory). The only downside to her class is that you have to get 2 books and a clicker, so expect to spend a bit of $$.
Dr. Nila is a great professor but she makes you work for your grade. If your class is struggling she will definitely help out. The test are hard but if you read the book and power points you should do fine. The homework is easy and she does give extra credit opportunities. Attendance matters so definitely show up to class. Overall a good class.
Tons of work throughout the semester, but most of your grade comes from multiple choice tests and finals. Enough of the questions were tricky that it was really hard to do well on them so no matter how you do on the rest of your assignments, it is really hard to do well in the class. She is available and provides lots of feedback though.
Dr. Veera was an absolute delight. She's super caring even though her classes are huge. We did homework online every other day with learning modules (don't waste $ on buying the physical textbook though). Tests were pretty ok, mainly what she lectures about in class an hw concepts. Great prof, easy class if you do the hw!
Dr. Nila is very nice, but her tests are really hard. The lectures and slides dont prepare you for the much more in-depth test questions. Be prepared to read the textbook a lot to study for exams. Im switching professors next semester so I can focus on courses within my major. On the plus side, homework is easy and she gives participation points.
Dr. Nila is very nice and she wants to help us to be better off but the tests require us to study a lot, besides going to class and taking notes, if really want to get good grades, READ the book.
Really sweet & wants you to really understand (even does class demonstrations with students). Takes time (10 min session)after class to review info for those who want help with the exams. Wants to make astronomy really interesting by even showing up an astronomy picture of the day at the beginning of class. Xtra credit during planetarium shows!
Dr. Nila isn't a bad professor, she does her best to get class involvement and to make lectures interesting. However, the exams are very detailed and they are online with a timer right above your questions (which stressed me out, personally). Overall, it's a decent class but if you're looking for an easy A think again. REALLY have to study for one
Dr. Nila's lectures are wonderful & she's a caring person! I loved attending her class. Homework are easy; she gives clear instructions on which sections to read. Her tests aren't hard if you know your materials. Her slides & readings from hw are VERY helpful for test! She will go out of her way to help you in class!
Wasn't helpful at all. Only made an A because of an 8 hour cramming session before exam 3. Only showed up to class for participation points, but had to teach myself the material for the tests. She spent majority of class time on simple facts like the order and size of planets, but expected students to learn complex information from the textbook/hw.
Do not ever take her class, you can barely understand what she is talking about, because of her accent. The tests are hard, it is not easy if you do not have any knowledge of astronomy.
Dr. Nila, is very interactive with her students. She has great activities to do throughout the lectures and tries to make everyone active in the class. As long as you put in the effort and participate in class you will get at least a B. All the tests are mostly like the reviews and the slides help as well. She is always available for her students.
tests are the most important. they're webcam and lockdown browser so no cheating. labs are pretty good depending on TA u get. class is okay, she's passionate. tests are hard bc of wording and all the info you have to memorize. not too bad overall. the people who are complaining might just be dumb honestly. y'all know urselves tho, so u can decide
She teaches maybe one thing per lecture because she takes so long to explain it then expects you to find info for tests from homework/textbook/reviews. Tests are also unnecessarily complicated with webcam and online. Attendance is not mandatory but participation points are.
Dr. NV posted wrong book on campus bookstore list of required texts and never notified students. PowerPoints, outlines and textbook all have different information and are out of date. She likes to test on minutia, the stuff that really is insignificant. Way too much homework assigned, doesn't know what quality instruction is. Bad News Teacher!
She claims she cares and that she'll bump your grade if you need it, but she took away my extra credit points that I had the entire semester 2 days before the final. I emailed her 3 times, no response. She never actually did anything she said she would do to help. I went to class, read, and didn't skip. This class was my lowest grade.
My only B this semester. Tests are nothing like what she teaches in class, all she teaches are basic concepts and class activities like what size is earth (apparently not a marble?) ... echo360 never works in her class and she is horrible about answering emails. Passed the lab with 100+ though.
While she can be entertaining in class with live demonstrations and her fascination with what she teaches, classes can sometimes seem pointless. She does give hints on what's on the test but other things that are not and need the textbook for hw as well. Also, she does surprise participation points for a grade, so make a friend or show up.
The best Prof. I could ever wish for
Cool professor but I felt like I couldn't connect to the material as much with her teachings. I guess her way of teaching didn't resonate to me so I didn't have as much interest in the course even though I love astronomy. Make sure to go to class though because everything is mandatory and she's pretty uptight about things.
NOTTTTT an easy A!!! She's so sweet & gives extensions if asked. The exams were HARD though, I learned nothing in class & saved my grade last min from the optional final which replaced my failed exam. participation pts add a lot. labs weren't bad & are graded super easy with lots of extra credit at the end of the semester. lockdown browser used
Dr Nila. is a great talker, to the point that we never actually learn anything in class. She goes on tangents about one topic and then next thing you know class is over.
This is an online class so it is mostly self taught. You do however need to read the textbook. Her test are 50 questions and requires lockdown. She is fairly fast at responding to emails. If you are interested in astronomy, you may enjoy this class.
Terrible, lectures were not related to test concepts at all. Nothing of value was gained during her class, except for a tumor sized headache about how awful the grading system is.
She was the worst professor I have ever had, the lechers were tough as you get nothing out of it. For Dr. Nila made us talk to each other for 10 min of the class time, which was useless. (I always showed up late). We had some in-class activities that were comply useless.
Loved Prof Nila's class. Study guide for the 1st exam was my biggest issue- made pages of my own questions to quiz myself and got a C. However, there is a lot of built in extra credit from attending planetarium shows & lab weighs in for 20% of grade which brought me to an easy A! Do well in lab & you'll be fine! (& don't buy the lecture textbook :)
I had to go through academic affairs, dean of the department to clarify unclear grading with no specific reasoning. Also, you have chance not able to access to the final exam review without any help from professor. Your emails will be neglected. If you have problem just go through dean or academic affair since you can't communicate with her.
She is gate keeping for no reason. Really don't get why she play so hard for the class that supposed to be easy lol
Be prepared to teach yourself everything. Exams and quizzes have grammatical and sentence structure errors. Assignments are lengthy. Professor does not respond to emails/messages. Coffee hours are not at all helpful, so don't waste your time attending.
Dr. Nila is great at caring for her students. She gives extra credit, and if you give your best, she will help you.
Lectures often go over the previous HW & feel pointless at times. The slides & HW are how I learned the content. Tests are LDB, practice tests are useful. Textbook isn't necessary. The project is straightforward. I stopped attending regularly after the 1st exam. Attend lab (& buy the book paper copy!) and the planetarium days and you'll be fine.
She is a sweet person. She assigns a lot of homework and final exam is cumulative so study guide is extensive (1-14 chapters). Some coffee hours only cover about 3-4 topics and weren't super helpful. This was the last science class that I needed and it was by far the most difficult.
Professor Nilakshi's class can be tricky, but the labs and planetarium visits make it engaging. Utilize Unstuckstudy and practice tests to prepare for exams. Attendance is a must, but the textbook isn't essential.
Not responsive to emails, 50% of grade is based on test that uses obscure info from class. 35%+ of the class time will be going over homework It feels that she is teaching a junior high school with her "games"
