Professor displayed knowledge in chemistry but flew through lectures way too fast. No slides given, everything is written on the whiteboard. Did not prepare students for final exam. Sometimes hard to reach outside of class. Takes a long time grading exams.
Cares about students. Amazing lectures. Helped me to actually understand ochem. If you put in the effort and pay attention in lectures, you will do well.
I took this class this past spring semester. It's mostly written lectures on the whiteboard where I can barely read her handwriting so I would have to sit in the front. Takes long to grade stuff and the homework has so many questions. It would take me a few days to complete one homework assignment. But, she is willing to help struggling students.
Dr. Ataie was a great professor! Doing the homework, coming to lectures (plus paying attention/taking notes), and studying a lil bit on your own time is a guaranteed A in this class. While she doesn't include slides or post them, that just motivates students to come to class instead of skipping every day.
Dr. Ataie was the most caring professor I have ever had. She prepares her students well if they are willing to put the work in on their own and go into office hours. Her tests are not there to trick you and she gives all the information and advice for students who want to succeed in their studies. She was wonderful and always available for help!
I really hate chemistry, but this professor made me hate it less. She doesn't use powerpoints and writes everything on the whiteboard while talking fast so I suggest taking pictures of the board if you can't write it all down. The exams are VERY similar to her HW answer key, use those to study.
Dr. Ataie's course was unorganized. We were told last minute that the exam would be a standardized test and received little information on what to review. She writes everything on the board and it's impossible to see anything if you don't come 30 minutes early and sit in the front. Overall, many people in my class had a poor experience.
Dr. Ataie is a decent professor if you have a knowledge of chemistry and read the textbook before coming to lecture. Pay careful attention in class and listen to her tips on what to expect on exams. If you find yourself confuse, don't hesitate to go to office hours as you will get help. Beware that 90% of your grade is exams and 10% is homework.
Took CHEM 272 and CHEM 273 from her. She explains the concepts very well and highlights the important things to remember for tests. Lectures aren't mandatory but are highly recommended. The course is difficult but she gives you everything you need in order to succeed in her class. If you put in the time and effort, you will do good.
As long as you study via the book you are gonna do well on the exams. The practice questions that are in the book are just like the exams she will give out except for the final because it's standardized. But she's not the best in terms of lecturing the class but just STUDY THE BOOK AND YOU WILL PASS. Also she curves when the class does horrible.
Lots of homework and lectures, but what do u expect its ochem. Go to class, do the work, listen to her lectures and you'll get an A. tests make up 80% of your grade so do well. She also tells you what concepts are going to be on the test. Just do the work and you'll be fine. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Because of the large class size it can be difficult for some students to learn in a lecture style hall. Prof. Niloufar gives clear instruction and makes sure to highlight the material that will appear on the exams. It is not an easy class because the material is not easy. But at least you know exactly what you need to study.
Overall reasonable workload and understandable material. I appreciate the straight forward nature of this class and professor.
Dr. Ataie is an amazing professor. She goes through content a little quickly but if you read the textbook before class and show up to all the lectures you will easily pass. Homework assignments are relatively easy and she tells you what type of problems will be on exams.
PLEASE save yourself from this nightmare. She is SUPER against in making Powerpoints and Quizzes. She says awful examples and blames her students for not doing well. She's not direct in teaching and would start talking about irrelevant things. DONT TAKE HER! IM NOT KIDDING! Choose Cain instead, dont sacrifice your GPA on this one.
Tests are poorly written but are multiple choice. You only get 15-16 questions on a 100-point exam with no partial credit. It is easier than Hyvel's since you don't need to memorize everything just what "looks right." Lectures are pretty awful because of the tangents she often goes on. Memorizing the homework is your key to success here.
no extra credits, no extra resources except for the textbook, write out the whole class lesson on the whiteboard, don't warn the student when moving on to the next topic, and NO SLIDES AT ALL. There is no review before the exam, just jump right into a new chapter days before the exam. no practice exam was given before any study.
This professor does not know how to teach properly. Not only does she fail to utilize proper teacher material, but explains material in a way that makes it more confusing than the textbook. She continued to make aggressive marks towards students for most struggling in the course and overall had a lack of any sympathy for the students. Do not take!
During lectures she stands in front of whiteboard blocking her writing then erases quickly, contradicts/mixes up her facts, and is condescending towards students. Assigns so many hw problems for little credit from incredibly expensive textbook. Overall terrible teaching style, would not recommend.
This teacher has an atrocious teaching style. It is as if she turned her brain off and then just stood there and allow words to fly out and hoped for the best. She makes interesting comments about students that are practically failing the class due to her failure as a teacher. DONT TAKE HER
I genuinely have not had a worse professor/teacher in my life. She does not explain topics well, stands in front of her writing and always erases it before anyone even has a chance to write it down. Even worse, she frequently gets confused on certain topics and will tell us incorrect information. 0/10 do not recommend. RUN. SAVE YOURSELF FROM THIS.
Lectures are helpful since she explains the concepts well and tells you what will be on the test but they aren't required. She puts the answer key to the homework before the deadline for every assignment so you know the answer to the homework problems. Do the homework problems and study the book and u will get an A.
This is one of the worst chem professors I had this year. She write everything on a whiteboard. jump through topics without telling the students. Homework is 55 points exams are 100 point. Say the most backhand comments towards students. Hate having extra credit and study material. No in class review before exams, goes right into a new chapter.
Mediocre
Extremely difficult class. In her lectures, she went on tangents unrelated to the course material and always erased the broad fast. Had to read the online textbook to teach myself the concepts before the midterms and final exam. There were HW each chapter that were weighted not much on the gradebook and the rest was tests.
Her lectures were not very helpful. After the first midterm I ended up just reading the textbook which I found to be 100 times more helpful than attending lectures. The homework is very helpful though and reflects the midterms very well. However, she gives the ACS as the final which is quite different compared to the midterms.
Don't take this class. Her lectures are not nearly close to helpful at all. I went to class for the first 2 weeks and never went again. Literally taught myself out of the textbook the whole semester. She expects you to read and basically understand the concepts before she even teaches it. If you can, avoid this class.
horrible professor. took her over summer and got a C and was off of a C- by 2% and she would not round up. rude towards students, acts superior to anyone she walks past. Jumps from topic to topic and doesnt explain anything well. makes me more confused after attending class just read the textbook and teach yourself at this point.
Honestly not the best professor…went the first few weeks then completely stopped going to lectures and just taught myself with the textbook and online videos. Taught myself better than she ever could. Goes on strange tangents, doesn't explain well, writes wrong test questions. One good thing: HW questions and textbook are reflective of exam.
Could not hear her the entire semester. Heavily graded based on exams.
She has a flipped way of teaching. She wants to teach as if you already know it but students don't know it yet cause they have to learn it from her first. The one good thing about her is her practice exams are pretty identical to her real exams and everything is graded on those exams.
DO NOT LET THIS CHEM BUSINESS FOOL YOU TWIN. THIS CHEM BUSINESS AINT NO GAME TWIN HAHH. AVOID THIS CLASS IF POSSIBLE.
Just do practice exam gang, cool lady let her coook. Homework lightwork but she gotta not erase so fast.
Let her cook. Let her cook. I said let her cook.
It has the potential to bind to nearby atoms. Hydrogen bonds are very strong.
Way better than Fuller. Ataie can cook. Fuller is crooked and cooked.
I have no idea what these troll reviews were saying. She goes too fast and has NO SLIDES to review back on, so we can't review the lectures on our own. At least there is a curve on the tests.
She will sometimes go through the material too fast, leaving you to learn some of it on your own. Likes to utilize the whiteboard and do examples in class, but will sometimes erase too fast. Good things about this class are she will add her own examples into the lecture slides for practice and practice exams are reflective of the actual exams.
this is the good stuff. Quality education right here. One semester of this and it got me going like Ooh, I love it when you do it like that And when you're close up, give me the shivers Oh baby, you wanna dance 'til the sunlight cracks and when they say the party's over, then we'll bring it right back.
Birds flying high You know how I feel Sun in the sky You know how I feel Breeze driftin' on by You know how I feel It's a new dawn It's a new day It's a new life For me And I'm feeling good I'm feeling good that I got a D+ in o-chem.
Least worst chem professor this semester. Unnecessary to attend lectures, which most complaints are about. Practice exams+answers and lecture slides given, homework policy lenient, attendance not taken. Could've done better, on me not her. Lots of resources provided, all you need is effort. Wants us to/makes it easy to succeed, reviews seem unfair
Attendance is not mandatory and I wouldn't say you'd exactly miss a lot if you don't go however it does help a bit. She's decent at explaining though sometimes it's a bit tough to keep up with her. The class is very exam heavy, so prepare to study. However, her exams are very reflective of the practice exams she provides.
Ok she is one tough professor, but an amazing one. The people that complain about her are the individuals that refuse to attend class and blame their incompetence on the professor who tries her best to teach the class. Just go to class instead of going to the beach guys... maybe you'll learn a thing or two.
If you go to lecture, you should be fine. She moves fast but goes through multiple examples for each topic. She clearly tells you what will be on the exam, and has practice exams available so you will know exactly what will be on the exam.
if you have to take ochem, take it with her. i promise she makes it look easy, just go to her lectures and take notes, do the homework, & practice exams. that literally covers everything thats on the actual exams. its multiple choice and its easy because you dont have to draw, the answer is already somewhere in there. just study
Honestly, just do the practice exams and you'll be set.
Probably attended no more than five lectures. The rubric made it clear that exams account for most of the grade. Her midterms are fairly easy, essentially carbon copies of her practice exams, and she curves them to a 65% average. The ACS is your final, but she seems to curve it generously.
Professor Niloufar's class was relatively easy. As long as you do the practice test and study for the ACS final you will do good. However, I feel like her lectures fell off hard around the middle of the semester and it was pretty hard to understand anything she was teaching. Overall, easy class but bad lectures.
Chem 272 was a pretty difficult class but if you attend all of the lectures and read the textbook on your own time, you will be okay! I had to study a lot, but the professor provided a lot of examples and explanations in class so I would HIGHLY encourage attendance. The practice tests she offers are VERY helpful so make sure to do those too.
If u want an A or pre-med like me listen up. go to every lecture, read the textbook chapters bc it teaches u step by step how to solve, do the hw, and spam practice problems. focus on practice problems n u will get an A bc her exams are basically hw problems
Dr. Ataie is hands down the best prof for 272 you can take at Manoa!! She made it easy and enjoyable. I did extremely poorly in 161&162 and yet got an A+ in 272. Her exams are JUST LIKE the practice exams she gives, SUPER helpful. Textbook needed and is extremely helpful. READ IT ALL. DO ALL THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS. Be ready to commit and do the work
One of the toughest courses I have ever endured, especially as a rising junior. Lectures felt rushed and little information came through; lots of self study.
Very informative professor, would recommend over the other lecturers when it comes to organic chemistry. Only issue is her way of presenting. She handwrites her own notes on the topics and just puts it under a projector, and they tend to be difficult to see/read. If you're more of an auditory learner than this professor is for you!
Chem 162 with my queen again!! CREDIT FOR ATTENDANCE AND HW JUST DO 50℅ GET FUL CREDIT HOLY AND FORMULA GIVEN NEXT TO PROBLEM BY EXAM!! So reasonable since it's her first too for chem 2 and puts good effort to help us
She writes things on the white broad them erases them almost immediately, and doesn't post her notes/a PowerPoint. If you do miss her examples, she takes them directly from the textbook. Clear she doesn't care. Was belittling when I went to office hours. Take Fuller if you can.
Clear and straight forward. If classes are attended, the tests are absolutely doable.
I think she's taking a new approach in recent lectures with the note-taking thing and attendance now, but in my experience I barely took notes in class and mainly relied on the practice set assignments and textbook. Her lectures are very fast paced so I eventually gave up trying to keep up. She also curved the grade a lot in my class.
Good prof. just make sure you pay attention in class to what she really emphasizes. make sure that you do the hw and understand it. she comes off as dismissive but she's really knowledgeable.
Ataie fails to properly interact with students on a personal level or order to gauge their proper understanding. Attending one of Raston's lectures allowed me to personally talk with him in the middle of lecture due to his participation-based system.
I've never been good at chem but honestly Professor Ataie did a great job at teaching the content, tests were on exactly what we did in class. Would recommend going to every lecture to get a good grade,
TBH if you just do the homework and get good test scores u do good. Really straight forward and not a complicated prof at all. Just study, be on top of the schedule (because she goes fast especially in the middle of the semester) and you will do just fine. Test questions are just HW questions or text book questions with different numbers.
really easy to pass just make sure that you can answer the textbook examples. but she gets a 1 bc she doesnt care about her students. the few times i reached out to her over email she didnt repond and then the one time i asked her a question in person i was trying to face her but she not once looked at me and ANSWERED WHILE SHE WALKED AWAY. evil.
The practice problems in class and on the homework are always similar to the questions on the exam; no trick questions or surprises. The professor is not inviting during office hours, but will answer your questions if you are assertive enough. Her lectures move fast, so follow along with the textbook. Clearly states what is on the exam though!
She automatically receives a 5 for me because there is no 2-hour evening recitation period as listed in the database, which changes absolutely everything and makes it so much easier for us. I can't express how much that means to us.
Can seem like she has a tough exterior and an adjustment at first, but after a week, you'll realize she's a good lecturer and honestly pretty funny. Very straightforward and transparent with what will be on tests. Decent amount of extra credit. Tests are not that hard if you read the textbook and do the HW.
Just about as close to perfect as it gets as a professor. Ataie is straightforward, no BS, and tells exactly what you need to know and what to study for exams. The only reason she doesn't have a 5 because there aren't much resources out there since there's no TAs/LAs, and she's kind of cold during 1on1 meetings or office hours. a bit disappointing.
Easist class ever, impossible to fail
WHY ARE YOU NOT TEACHING OCHEM 2. CHEM DEPARTMENT THINKS SHE'S TOO GOOD. Being her back and FREE ATAIE!!
good prof. I like what I see.
easy to pass and understand the content, good professor. but she gets a 1 because she can't connect to her students. the few time i reached out to her she was dismissive and when i came to her with tears in my eyes she laughed in my face.
Your best opportunity for getting a good grade while still getting the chance to learn ochem at uh manoa as of Fall 2025. If you can't pass or understand after attending lectures or at least using her uploaded notes and doing the hw honestly, you didn't have a chance in ochem to begin with.
Should be rated much higher imo, at least for ochem 1. No complaints here tbh.
These tests are so easy. Holy moly guacamole.
Boy oh boy where do I even begin. Ataie... honey, my pookie bear. I have loved you ever since I first laid eyes on you. The way you draw on the whiteboard and strike inspiration into your students eyes. Your silky smooth touch around the board, and that gorgeous pen. I wish it were possible to freeze time so I would never have to watch lecture end.
Dr Ataie is one of the best professors I've had at UH. She's incredibly knowledgeable, explains complex topics clearly, and is very straightforward about what will be on exams. She may seem cold at first, but if you talk to her, she really warms up and wants her students to succeed. It's very disappointing that she won't be returning next semester.
multiple choice tests are basically the homework
THANK YOU FOR A GREAT SEMESTER. QUEEN ATAIE IF YOU ARE READING THIS, WE WANT TO LET YOU KNOW WE LOVE YOU AND WILL WELCOME YOU BACK WITH OPEN ARMS. PLEASE COME BACK SOMEDAY. the chem department needs you.
Dr Ataie is the best professor I've had. She's an amazing lecturer and makes her tests super easy. She literally spoon feeds you the questions that'll be on the exams. It's so sad and disappointing that the university is firing her. They think she's too good, and I hope they regret their decision. Dr Ataie we love and support you!
If the rumors are true they are firing Ataie for doing her job. I question the intelligence of the chemistry department for letting go the only professors that know what they're doing. This is happening as she who shall not be named is teaching in her place. This is quite frankly disgusting and I demand a overhaul of the chem dept. Free Ataie NOW.
Dr. Ataie is the clearest and comprehensive lecturers I have had throughout my chemistry career. It's disappointing to hear the UH is letting her go and I feel that doing so severely damages the curriculum for stem students for whom ochem 1 and 2 are required courses. For those of you who didn't get to have her as a professor I'm so sorry :(
Kumashiro, I see you. You did this, didn't you
If the rumors of Ataie being let go are true, it demonstrates the chemistry department prioritizes nepotism/connections over students, putting professors with an established record of poor teaching ahead of those, like Ataie, who teach well. Shame on this department's administration, whose decisions exemplify that they do not care about students.
This professor can make Organic Chemistry extremely simple. Her lectures are easy to follow and the tests are extremely similar to the notes and homework. I highly recommend her to whatever institution she goes to next. Shame on the chem department for letting her go (someone drop the tea idk what happened).
Ataie is the BEST chem professor ive had so far. She is very incisive with how she structures her class. She teaches very clear and comprehensively. Lectures were engaging because she often connected topics to real-life examples, and her unintentional humor made class enjoyable. It was truly a pleasure having her as a professor.
