Takes a while to get used to his handwriting. Read the text for the first 2 week

God damn hard... mission impossible
don't know what's going on in the lecture! very bored!!!
Handwriting is freakin' horrible... :)
Midterms were easy..but final was hard....
a poor prof.
Almost as good as MATH814, Algebraic Curves or MATH438, Linear Algebra
One of the worst profs i've had. He has no idea how to communicate to the students, his writing is oh so hard to read, and his bouncing around during class is very distracting. Avoid him at ALL costs!!! or you will be VERY sorry!!!
Do not take his class... You will regret so much. He is really worst teacher ever i met during my life time. You must consider whether you really really reaLLY have to take that course which he teaches. If possible, you must avoid to take his class. It will be your worst experience in your life, for sure. Truly...
Absolutely horrible prof. Very distracting and has absolutely no idea how to communicate to students. Hard tests out of very few marks. Avoid at all costs or you will be sorry!!!
I had him for two classes and I was wanting out: no idea what he was talking about or writing about(my high school teacher does a better job!), messy notes. Thank god I was not alone. This was my first year in university and I thought this was the way of it. Thank god it was only him...hopefully.
Help.
the class itself may not be as hard as you think, but this guy could be the worst prof you've ever seen. horrible lectures and notes. I would rather wait for a semester even if the course is compulsory.
Most of my friends hated this guy so much they went to the other guy's class every day. I stayed put, loyally. He's not as bad as people say, but he's definitely not great either.
He is a horrible prof. Not organized, reluctant to help and very mean. He gives hard assignment, hard tests and makes your life miserable. SFU should lay him off otherwise more students will suffer. I hope the chair of math department visit this site and see how students react to the performance of profs.
He's not THAT mean, but his writing is quite terrible. Also can't understand him through an accent and him mumbling. Makes it a pain in the rear if you sit further back. Not too bad if you've taken calculus, but if not, steer clear.
I just had my final. what should I say, he is responsible for my failure. (didn't fail but definately not great) many questions on stuff he spent 2 mins in lectures, and some even not in lecture notes :(. I guess people in his class are on our own.
mission impossible.. how can i go over this course.... his writing is horrible.. and he teaches a very important section in 5mins. and done!?
enthousiastic prof. he is better than his brother
Very good at complicating things...
He is not so bad.
He is a genius and a highly talented prof. in MATH, but his lecture is not so informative. He is good at asking questions in class. His lecture seems not so interesting. Undoubtly, he is an intelligent person.
This genius pulled a nice trick on the final: gave a big question from the material that he never mentioned during the review session. On a general side, he has a talent of obfuscating simple concepts into something completely mind-boggling.
Oh My God...I don't know why he is teaching=.= The worst Profesor ever!!! His writing...don't need to say anything more, just a word=terrible. Also the way he teach...SUPER BORING...especially the morning class at 8:30, there are no ways that make you stay awake...overall, just a terrible prof!
Had a talent for explaining the simpler concepts but really failed as the course proceeded into the more abstract and difficult subject matter. I approached him once, seeking his advice on 3rd year math classes. My question was met with nothing but sheer arrogance. I was speechless. At that point all respect was lost for this prof.
ABSOLUTELY THE BEST. Whoever complains about him should go to Jonathan Jedwab's classes and see how horrible he is. Nils Burin is a bless. Exams are VERY easy and especially his final exam is like SUPER easy. Just do the assignments and understand what you are doing and you are guaranteed to get an A.
UNWANTED PROF! This guy can't explain anything - even simple concepts can be turned into something not understandable! His lectures are useless; he can go off sched. and still expect you to know stuff on the MT. Students always correct him even with his own prepared lecture notes.
this prof is the worst proffessor for mathematics. u dont want to take him if you wanna get a good mark. at first , the first midterm , he made it very easy. then the second midterm, the avg was a fail for our class, considering that our class is quite a strong class. ANd the final is coming! ill see how it goes and post for u guys!
this guy can't teach at all. He just repeats the stuff from the text book without even explaining them. WHen a student asks him stuff, it took him 20 min to confuse us even more. Both midterms are like quizes compare to his final. Just AVOID this prof at all cost, you rather take the course in a later sem than having him ruining your GPA. O/w, GL!
Maybe this prof is good at doing researches, i dont know, but he can not teach, hand writing is so hard to figure out, lectures are not helpful. Finals are fair,I think! It seems that he always offer an alternative method (10%+90%)to calculate the final grade, which helps us a lot
One of his kind. Really bad. You can't understand what he is saying, he's making even the smallest things really complicated. His handwriting as awful as doctors. One might say even doctor's handwriting is better. If you have an option, do NOT take his course. Believe you me!
A very talented mathematician, he has great understanding of the material; however he not a very effective instructor. Sometimes he uses the most obscure methods to demonstrate a concept, this provides great insight into a theorem, but not to a student who is seeing it for the first time. Questions in lecture were furnished with good answers.
Holy moly! His assignments make you go WTF and so do his lectures. I feel like I am teaching myself the course, even though I attend every day and take good notes. I did get a great mark on both midterms but still...If someone else were teaching it I feel like I'd understand it rather than just memorizing certain things. Wy is he still working??
He knows the material well. I think the exams were very fair.
A total failure towards his students. He explains in his lectures in a graduate format rather than undergraduate, making student's lives a whole lot more miserable...You rather use the textbook instead, do most of the questions from there and you should be fine. Just STAY the HECK away from him
he does not know how to teach
While he knows his stuff, he has problems communicating the concepts effectively in his lectures. I ended up sleeping in class, and after the second half of the semester, i stopped coming to class. What helped me the most were the assignments and MOST IMPORTANTLY the textbook. Do problems from the book, study hard and u'll be fine. I got an A-.
When explaining proofs in class , skips all intermediate steps, asumes you know everything
Took Math 232 with him two years ago. One of the easiest math professors in SFU...
Had this guy for a sub, HORRIBLE!!!! always stutters, ugly writing, and notes look like chicken scratch! about 25 people walked out on him during lectures.
Why did SFU hire him at all?? NEVER had I known and put so much effort into understanding lecture notes in a math course at all. He really is one of the most horrible math teachers I've dealt with all my life...
Nils Bruin is not a useful teacher. The facts are that he does not prepare proper lecture notes. He does not care about his students and he gets annoyed from questions and interaction. Nils can't teach (thats why he is at SFU, not UBC). He definitely is not up to standards and I am surprised that he is even working at SFU..
He is one the worst professor in SFU. Going to his class is absolutly no use and study with ur textbook is better. He cannot explain any of the proof, but end up putting so many proof questions on the exam. He is just SOOO bad, and if you can avoid him, please do so. It will make ur life much better!!!
Make sure you understand proof theory very well before you take this class. Most of the proofs in the class are short and shouldn't be too hard. Nils does a pretty good job at illustrating the key theorems and ideas in the class. The final and midterms were fair. I highly recommend taking Math 342 before this course.
eeeeek!!
Absolutely one of the worst math profs that ever existed on the face of this planet.
He is a cool teacher. While he teaches though, he tends to make mistakes that can confuse the hell out of you but he is really helpful when you ask questions during class. And make sure you ask because chances are 90% of the class is confused as well. Exams were easier compared to the homework.
WORST PROF EVER
Absolutely the worst prof ever. He makes soo many mistakes during class it's really hard to follow. Really boring, doesn't tell the class so be quiet and everyone is talking. Not helpful at all, I don't even know who hired this guy as a math Prof....AVOID HIS CLASS if you would like to pass.
nice prof, enthusiastic, and helpful when you have questions. Midterms were fair, not very difficult. HOWEVER, you won't get a good grade learning from his lectures- he's a TERRIBLE teacher and makes way too many mistakes its very hard to follow. If you're not strong at math, avoid him or get a really good tutor. You'll need it
Unclear and often makes mistakes during lectures but usually fixes it. He's not that great at explaining but his tests aren't that hard either.
Easily the worst professor of all time. It seems he doesn't know what he's teaching half the time, rambles, doesn't finish material. Makes a few mistakes a lecture, and though it is funny to watch him sweat - you'll also watch your GPA fall.
With respect to generally all professors I tend to say he has to be strong in researches, otherwise his students will kick him out with catcalls. Lecturing exclusively and explaining elusively, he cannot draw attention from anyone except with his mistakes, which makes the whole class worse because of enormous noise. God bless him, cause we won't.
Nice guy, but can't teach. Often he just needed to stand up for himself... especially when people started to make fun of his mistakes. I thought the midterms were fair, but the final was awful and nothing like the practice ones and was a grade killer. However on the plus side his subtle jokes were pretty funny.
I only went to 2 of his lectures, so I can't speak to his teaching ability, but the midterms and final were fair. You were basically guaranteed 10% with loncapa assignments and the diagnostic test (or CSS). The written assignments were sometimes hard. The textbook is mandatory, lecture attendance is not.
he does not know how to teach, generally, he makes stupid mistakes and he can not control the lecture at all. everybody is talking during his lectures and no one can focus on the unclear way of teaching he has at all!
His exam was fair and midterms will super easy. People who think he is horrible are just dumb buffoons who think they are supposed to be spoon fed everything. Reality check, this is not high school, only the strongest survive. Cheers!
Never attended lecture after the first midterm because I realized he cannot teach at all. I didn't even look at his lecture notes. Just do all assignemnts, loncapa, practice problems, past exams and you'll do fine. Exams were fair.
Most horrible prof I have ever had. His lectures are a waste of time, he quickly goes over stuff as if he is teaching it to himself. GPA downer. Exams are nothing like he teaches you. And he cant teach. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
The number of mistakes he makes just adding is distracting as a whole... midterms were alright. Final was killer. Don't even need to attend lecture. Just do the textbook questions and assignments. Must work very hard if you have not taken pre calc before.
Lectures were fairly useless. He knows how to teach, but not what to teach. Final Exam and midterms are really fair. The textbook will be your best friend. Not a hard class to get a good mark in if you put in a couple hours everyday to study the material you need to know for the week. Do all the LON CAPA and do all textbook questions.
Exams and assignments are fair. Just make sure to study. This is not school anymore.
Terrible professor. He can't explain anything at all, makes things unnecessarily complicated. His notes are terrible and his lectures are jumbled. He pulls things out of no where that are way more difficult than anything in lectures or in the textbook. His final exam was brutal. His weekly q's are too long and are harder than anything learned.
absolutely terrible prof, made lectures incredibly boring and were filled with mistakes. He somehow manages to make math harder than it seems and his exams and assignments are way harder than expected. Final exam was brutal, most of it were on things he barely covered. NEVER TAKE A COURSE WITH HIM
he gets the answers wrong, clearly not prepared and mumbles most of the time. his explanations doesn't make sense, even tho i took calc AP in highschool I had hard time bc he confused me more. worst math prof ever.
I got a C in 154. His final was hard, yes. HOWEVER, looking back, he was a nice guy with a decent accent(half the profs at sfu are worse) and tried to teach the material well. Overall, the class was filled with loud surrey kids who distracted the class and slowed pace, leading to partial coverage of material. Read book, ask questions,be victorius
One of the best Math profs at SFU. Assignments were not bad, and the tests were fair, with no surprises. Excellent.
He knows nothing about prep or teaching. He will often stop the lecture for 5 minutes while he tries to figure out the example he prepared. He seems like he has a decent head for math. He also forces everyone with electronics to 1/4 of the room because it is distracting. He also leaves the lights on full blast. 2/10. Honestly.
Terrible instructor. He seems like a nice enough guy, and obviously knows his math, but cannot communicate what is going on in his head or teach a class. Seems very unprepared and makes a lot of mistakes. Really frustrating having to teach myself the course, and relying on poor class notes.
This guy has no idea how to teach. He probably knows his stuff but it is clear that he has no idea what he's doing when in front of the class. He brings in notes he's done beforehand and recopies them down onto another blank note page. He often misses his own errors and when people point it out he gets really flustered and confused. Please avoid
He does know his stuff, but he is not good at communicating it to the class. I fully relied on the textbook for this course. Lastly, with 3 weeks left, I asked if there was any extra work I could do to help my grade (my father had just passed away so I wasn't doing too well) and he told me if it was hard to just drop it with only 3 weeks left!
By far one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He know his stuff but has no idea how to teach. He just copie his notes directly onto the display, and if someone asks a question or corrects him (which happens often) he gets confused and flustered. Up until taking this class, I had never failed a test or a class before. Now I've done both. AVOID
He is not the best instructor, however he does go easy on his class in terms of exams and quizzes. You don't need the text per se, but it helps to read it and do all the homework. He is a kind man, but makes a plethora of mistakes through lectures. I couldn't correct him, because I felt bad for him. You can get an A, just make sure you do homework.
Despite being a Calculus related course, homework and final exam questions expect students to have a good understanding of Linear Algebra as well. Overall, Nils is an okay/good professor. He did scale students in the end.
Great class
he is a real genius, and a very good teacher.
Great teacher.
Really nice teacher. Humorous and attractive class. He is definitely glad to help you with any problems. His teaching styles make this boring algebra fascinating. If there is a chance I would choose him again.
Really humorous instructor. Sometimes he may make mistakes, but not a big deal. Mathematical genius will make tiny faults, can be understood.
Worst prof I had. Learned the whole course by myself as his lectures makes the material more confusing than it needs to be. Hand writes all of his lecture notes in cursive so if you can't read cursive, good luck. Makes plenty of mistakes during lectures and just scribbles them out. He knows the content really well, just can't teach it.
Dr. Bruin is a genius. He makes the boring algebra fascinating. Besides the materials he will also share a lot application of the concepts. He has the ability to let you know whether you should learn math if you are confused. I love him.
He makes the most simple things super complicated had to do everything by myself and ask my questions in the calculus workshop because the lectures weren't useful AT ALL. This teacher obviously knows his stuff but he is not good at all at teaching it. I think he might have chosen the wrong profession.
Literally the whole time he would do clicker questions and any example he would do, he would do it wrong. Probably one of the worst profs I've ever had. I took calc in high school and got a 90 and I literally failed somehow, he gives so many assignments and on top of that you have to teach yourself. Do not take this with him its horrendous.
Worst teacher ever in my entire life. Students always correct his mistakes. Never make any concept clear, and spend more than half of class time on poll question after 1 minute's concept explanation. Also, he "hmmmm"s a lot, sounds like he never prepare what he tries to say. Terrible class experience. SELF STUDY DOES MUCH BETTER JOB.
Literally learn nothing during lectures, but you have to go because he does poll questions for marks. His hand writing sucks and he overcomplicates things way too much. Luckily I took calc in high school cuz I'd 100% fail otherwise.
Honestly the worst teacher i've ever had. The most unprofessional, unorganized, and the laughing stock of the sfu math department. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE ESPECIALY ONLINE. TAKE 150. this proves how terrible sfu is at sciences compared to UBC's super professional and high quality stature. no wonder why they are respected in math and sciences.
Seems like a nice enough dude
Hard class, made harder by his delivery. I was struggling to keep up all semester, and he finally lost me with 2 weeks left in the semester. Materials are never explained in a digestible way. It's a hard class, and Abstract Algebra is a hard topic for first-time students, but I have since seen other professors teach it much better than he did.
PLEASE AVIOD THIS PROFESSOR This is the worst math class I have ever had. He never taught any useful examples in the class. He gave you 3-4 poll questions that is super hard and worth 8% of grades. I have just done my final, it is 45% of the grade and seems like he just wants everyone to get an F. If you reading this, happy holiday, hope you pass
please avoid him!! Have to attend every online class to do the poll questions even though they're not related to the tests. Practice exams are useless because he won't test about Midterms are long and you may not have time to finish them. Final is the worst. There are some questions that's not on practice exams and I have no idea what they are.
He's a nice dude. Quizzes and exams were easy.
To be fair it might have been cause of the online classes, however he failed to explain problems thoroughly. Also midterms and final exam were way harder than what he had explained and prepared us for.
It was not too bad. I always asked him questions after class or during office hours and hed always explain everything to me patiently. Another thing is that I was his USRA student before and hes definitely a passionate and responsible supervisor. If youre interested in research, feel free to choose him.
This teacher is the worst math teacher Ive ever had. His online lessons are a boring slog and are only attended by the majority of students because of polls. The slides he presents only overcomplicate concepts. His writing is poor, cannot communicate his thoughts well despite knowing the concepts, and is not enthusiastic. Misses parts of units too
Nils Bruin is one of the worst profs I have had. He is unable to articulate concepts and thus explains things terribly or does not explain things at all. His handwriting is also terrible which does not help his lackluster teaching skills. His lectures are basically him skimming through lecture notes. Avoid Dr. Bruin if you can.
Nils Bruin is the worst math professor at SFU, hands down. He is unable to explain anything properly, and whenever he tries to explain anything, he stumbles on his words, and his handwriting is egregious. He seems to be an expert in math, but teaching is not his strength. He literally skims through lecture slides and laughs at student's questions.
Never take a class with Nils Bruin, he is a terrible professor. His classes are basically students asking him questions and him failing to answer any questions properly. You are expected to watch pre-recorded lectures and then know how to answer all the super hard poll questions in class. He teaches nothing and has hard quizzes once a week.
Nils Bruin is a terrible professor and his classes are horrendous. Avoid this professor at all costs! They way he teaches is incomprehensible. He goes super fast and doesn't explain anything. Every class he has these poll questions which are super hard and on things he hasn't even taught yet. Just watch the Mulholland videos and you might be fine.
as a pretty honest student, this professor is well..... very very bad. I would skip his lectures, because he can't teach to save his life, but you need to do his poll questions. I cannot believe my tuition went towards this goof. as a person, he's pretty ok, but as a professor he's garbage.
This man could somehow make explaining 1+1 a challenge, that is, if you can read his hand writing. Avoid this prof at all costs
How is Nils Bruin a professor is my question. This guy can't explain anything even remotely well. His classes are extremely hard poll questions that are worth almost 10 percent of your mark. He gives tough quizzes every week and only gives you ten minutes to do them. So if at any time during the quiz you get stuck, you are done for. AVOID BRUIN PLS
Nils Bruin is a terrible prof who can't execute a proper lecture. He constantly makes mistakes when doing examples and students have to correct him. He takes so long to do examples that he never finishes covering all the material during lectures and has to skip parts of the unit. He ignores most questions from students and has brutal handwriting.
Nils Bruin seems to be very knowledgeable of Mathematics, but his ability to teach is worse than if a kindergarten teacher tried to teach special relativity. Nils Bruin cannot explain anything even remotely well. He stumbles on every sentence and his handwriting is the worst handwriting I've ever seen. Avoiding Bruin is a must, Bruin is terrible!
this man got into the wrong career. he doesn't understand what teaching is. he reads off his slides and then writes chicken scratch. he also frequently skips a lot of content and doesn't help students when they ask questions. don't take a class with this professor, you will regret it.
his online poll questions are ridiculously hard and barely pertain to what he teaches on the day, if you dont read the textbook or watch the lectures beforehand youre screwed. doesnt help that his writing is unreadable either, find a class with a different teacher if you can.
nils bruin is an absolute joke of a professor its ridiculous. this guy covers very little in his lectures and has super hard poll questions which he never teaches. and he also cant explain any concepts well. his writing is so bad it looks like an alien language. never take a class with bruin he will make your brain explode.
Nils Bruin is an absolute embarrassment of SFU. He is the worst professor I've ever seen! His ability to explain anything is downright nonexistent and his writing is worse than the worst chicken scratch. His classes are filled with poll questions that count for 8 percent of your mark and are on concepts that aren't even covered yet. WORST PROF EVER
Nils Bruin is a pretty solid professor. He is always very caring and always tries to answer students' questions to the best of "his ability". And his quizzes always only have two questions!
Nils Bruin is a terrible professor. He does not understand how to teach. His classes are filled with poll questions on concepts that haven't been taught. He also has the most incomprehensible writing I've ever seen. During lectures, he makes so many mistakes that students have to correct him it's insane. Avoid this professor, he cannot do his job.
Bruin is a fine professor. If you watch the pre-lectures (as he asked) and do the homework (as he asked) and if you aren't a whiny b*tch, you'll do fine on tests/quizzes/polls. Polls are easy if you watch the pre-lectures and read the textbook. Just be prepared to put in the work.
Nils Bruin uses polls to ensure attendance, however, they can be extremely difficult applications of a formula or problem-solving technique we haven't covered yet. Apart from the polls, the quizzes and even midterms are quite concise and representative of textbook material.
If you don't go to class, it is -8 percent because of Bruin's poll questions. But Bruin's classes are an absolute pain. He is an atrocious professor, he cannot articulate and explain anything properly. He has these poll questions in class which are super hard and no one knows how to do them. Avoid Bruin if you can because he is excruciatingly bad.
If there was a worst teacher award, it would go to Dr Bruin because this guy is probably the worst teacher I have ever seen. He makes so many mistakes in lectures that students always have to step up and correct his mistakes. When he tries to explain anything, he stumbles on his words and cannot articulate complete sentences without messing up.
Nice and intimate professor if you think Math is a sacrilegious joke in human history.
Horrible prof. Makes simple concepts more complicated than they really are. Better off watching Jaime Mulholland's vids.
Pretty nice guy and definitely smart, but just because you know the topic doesn't mean you can be a good prof. Terrible lectures, they're a mess. Learned more from youtube videos than from watching this guy's lectures :(
Bruin is obviously a good researcher. However, his apathy in his lectures is obvious. He uses poll questions as a way to mark your participation. However, the poll questions are often poorly designed and presuppose knowledge of material that hasn't been covered yet in class. On the other hand, TA's are very helpful will explain material thoroughly.
Mandatory videos to watch the week before in order to survive often unfair required poll questions (8% of grade) Prof Bruins "lectures" are just mainly focused on these polls, and slightly reviewing the videos (which are not even his). Weekly timed exams (10m limit, gl) Very big final (45% of grade) Sad I need 152 now, same prof, lost my drive :/
Good prof, class is easy as long as you review/study the material and attend the lectures. The final was tough but he scaled it down to make it fairer.
You have to attend the useless lectures to answer poll questions. He will try to explain the question after everyone answers and will 9/10 times do the question wrong and confuse everyone. What was really a drag was that the final was done basically completely on polar coordinates which was the last section done and we had no practice on it.
His polls were really confusing. I didn't even bother listening to his lectures, just did the polls and ignored his explanations. Actually, he is a nice guy and if you go to his OH, he will be happy to help you. I got 100% for my Calc 12 but still had to work really hard, so do your homework, watch Jamie's lectures and you will be fine.
I thought I would be coming to SFU to listen to awesome math professors talk, but Nils Bruin is a complete abomination of a professor. He does not understand how to organize or teach properly. His lectures are filled with these poll questions that count for 8 percent of your mark and are impossible to answer in the 1 minute he gives you. Terrible!
Avoid! This professor is terrible at explaining or communicating anything, whether it be math concepts or course information. His communication skills might the worst out of any Phd graduate I've ever seen. He barely teaches in lectures and just scribbles chicken scratch for a few examples. He also made the final so much harder than the midterms.
decent professor. Although, you must rely heavily on your textbook to prepare for exams and not just lecture material and homework questions. he has poll questions during lectures, but they barely count towards your grade.
Having a Ph.D. does not equate to being a good teacher. Lectures were disastrous and only worth attending due to participation questions. Professor Bruin's explanations were confusing at best, and often times riddled with errors that students had to correct him on. Virtually any other resource was more beneficial than his classes.
Gives useless in-class poll questions, makes tons of mistakes, and his writing is impossible to read. Do not take this if you're not required to.
Dr. Bruin is not the best at teaching. His tests can be tricky at times but it is doable as long as you put in the work outside of class and do other problems. I strongly suggest watching Jamie Mulholland's Calc I series on YouTube as Nils' lectures are merely a condensed of those videos. P.S. There is a quiz every week on the previous content.
Teaching doesn't seem like the profession Nils Bruin should've gone into. He is wholesomely unfit for the job. His classes are super slow and go over content already covered in Dr. Mulholland's video lectures, but he just teaches it in a worse way. Bruin is incredibly unorganized and also students have to correct his mistakes during class. brutal.
bruin can't explain a concept without butchering a part of it. his handwriting is also super distressing to your eyes. avoid this prof unless you have a good knowledge of course concepts before the class starts. the quizzes and exams are doable if you study religiously but the lectures are super hard to sit through
You can tell Nils is trying to do his best when teaching, but he's just not that good. He struggles to explain things, and he often dances around students' questions. He depends on lecture videos from another professor rather than teaching himself. His lecture isn't that useful but he does grade participation so you should go.
Dr. Bruin's lectures are the worst lectures I've ever witnessed. He completely has no idea how to teach a concept. One day he tried to cut apples to prove something but it made no sense. Eventually the whole class started talking and nobody could hear him talking anymore. Also, his handwriting is so messy students have to ask him what he wrote.
This man is the wost teacher I have ever had. He doesn't explain what he's doing in class to solve problems rather opting to solve a bunch of problems as fast as he can. If you get this guy just watch the Jamie Mulholland videos instead because you will fail if you try to rely on his teaching.
i try to listen to this guy during lectures, but his thick mask makes him inaudible. he also gives you only 10 minutes during quizzes and the questions are super tough so good luck if you get bruin thats all i can say. bruin is not a good prof at all.
HOW DID THIS MAN GET A PHD IS MY QUESTION. Bruin is the worst professor I have ever come across. His english skills are lacking and he makes so many mistakes while teaching, absolutely brutal...
nils bruin is a horrible prof. he told us to buy iclickers, then proceeds to not use them. i paid 30 dollars for iclicker and it has gone to waste! avoid nils bruin, he is a pain to have in your life. and DO NOT buy iclicker because nils bruin will not use it.
AVOID BRUIN AT ALL COSTS. If I had to give him a nickname, it would be "Pills Bruin". Nils Bruin --> Pills Bruin. You are gonna need painkiller pills to withstand the pain that Nils Bruin gives you. He can't teach any concept properly and students have to alert him of his mistakes. He also gives super hard quizzes so yea, get painkillers.
If you enjoy watching organic chemistry tutor, khan academy and Indian tutor videos, you'll love this course. Since most people learn next to nothing from lectures, most of the learning is done on YouTube. Also, if you wanted to contact this prof, good luck. They don't read emails or messages. You'd need to visit in person.
tells students that the midterm contains material covered extremely recently that no one has time to practice it. absolutely disgusting and ruthless professor.
In all of my life, I have never seen a professor as inadequate as Nils Bruin. His lectures are the super boring and he makes so many mistakes on his own examples it's unbelievable. And he gives super hard quiz questions and you only have 10 minutes to write the quiz so it is impossible to finish on time. Please do not take a class with Nils Bruin.
this prof needs to get himself together and stop obsessing over his covid mathematical models. and he doesnt know how to pronounce omicron which is super distressing.
this professor literally didnt know how to do his own example in the lecture that students had to teach him how to do it. and he was sweating and shaking profusely it was so uncomfortable. i cant believe my tuition money went towards this goof of a professor.
This dude is the worst professor you'll ever have. Avoid him at all costs. This guy makes tons of mistakes in every lecture and stutters like crazy. Idk how this dude hasn't been fired yet. Also his writing is chicken scratch
nils bruin has to be the worst prof in the history of sfu. he cannot get through a single lecture without making a gruesome mistake while he is teaching. students always have to shout out that he is doing something wrong and he always gets flustered. he ends up having to skip examples because he doesnt know how to do them. his accent sucks too.
For some reason in the lecture hall, he makes life for students even more difficult by restricitng the first 2 rows. This means less seats, which means less room for all the studens. which means les social distancing. Its kinda dumb how hes doing this tryna be COVID Safe. But what about the rest of us? Selfish fat oaf also cant teach BUt you knew.

this man should take a cognitive test or something. im worried for him.
have you thought that you've seen the worst handwriting in the world? from a doctor, a kindergartner? well nils bruin's handwriting is far worse than anything you've ever seen before. i can't believe this guy has survived years of school with handwriting as gross as a stool that is being flushed. your eyes will disintegrate at his handwriting.
This professor is so bad in every aspect. From terrible handwriting, to stuttering after every few words, to being unable to explain anything, Nils Bruin is the worst prof ever! Nobody likes him, and even his own TA's have said that he gives unreasonable exams and isn't very good at teaching. AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!!
The only entertaining part of his class is he says sir come fear ants multiple times a lecture.
I thought I liked math. I want to like it. But Bruin makes me dread it. No matter what I do I'm never satisfied. He makes me hate something I really want to like. It's a chore even to just sit in the hall for a few minutes. Nobody listens except for the gems that attentively correct him at every turn. Much love for them. Not Bruin
Nils Bruin must've cheated his way through school because his knowledge of first-year calculus is unimaginably bad that many students know more than him and have to correct his mistakes during lectures. He is also probably eats McDonalds every day with a belly the size of 5 basketballs.
I can't believe this guy got a PhD. He is fat, ugly, and always forgets to unmute on zoom. And his teaching skills...
This professor's algebra skills are severely lacking, an i mean SEVERELY. Nils Bruin cannot get through a single lecture without forgetting how to do algebra at least once. Students always have to point out his mistakes in his work and he takes minutes sometimes to realize his mistakes. And any explanations he makes are super perplexing.
Worst prof ever. Learned the whole course by myself as his lectures makes the material more confusing than it needs to be. Hand writes all of his lecture notes in cursive so if you can't read cursive, good luck. Makes plenty of mistakes during lectures and just scribbles them out.
Hands down worst prof of all time. doesnt know what a class is, he simply just shows up and writes some scribbles on his tablet while speaking gibberish. his exams are tough but not impossible, so just study like youve never studied before and you will probably pass. class averages are really low so just ride the curve. but bruin is terrible
literally goes through the entire class teaching us how to use a calculator, which isnt available for exams. teaches us nothing about how to actually do the problems.
AVOID! this prof relies on other prof's youtube videos for teaching. in his lectures, he simply just copies notes from other professors and explains it but just in a worse way. just watch the videos from jamie mulholland and skip bruin's useless lectures. going to bruin's lectures will only confuse you. watch jamie's vids for proper explanations.
bruin needs to take off his mask when he teaches cuz he looks like shrek and talks like an illiterate peasant. but just avoid bruin if you can cuz his teaching skills and course organization or horrible.
terrible prof in every aspect
nils bruin is so bad. today there were literally a few people making a bit of noise and nils bruin threw a tantrum at them, claiming they were too loud. but his teaching is so boring and no one can understand what he is explaining. he said have a good restful reading break, but proceeds to bombard us with super hard assignments.
nils bruin is tries to teach, but cannot. like he physically and mentally is not equipped to explain math concepts. his fat belly gets in the way of his ability to stand properly in front of a desk, and his non-stop stuttering while he speaks impedes his ability to properly communicate. and his exams and quizzes are incredibly brutal. terrible prof
attendence in bruin's lectures is so paltry and you can see the sadness in bruin cuz no one comes to his lectures because he teaches so bad
It is so bad, I want to give you a zero, but that's not possible, so I give you a one
know how to teach yourself new concepts or don't take a class with bruin
in a class over 500 students, attendence in todays lecture didnt even crack 100. makes sense cuz bruin is the worst teacher at sfu, he literally cannot say a complete sentence without stuttering and he always makes mistakes when doing examples. such a bad teacher im pretty sure his wife needs to step-by-step teach him how to get in good positions.
this nils bruin guy, man he is a mess of a professor. absolutely delusional about the fact that his ability to communicate or explain concepts is downright woeful. i am distraught that sfu allows professors like this to continue to teach. paid 700 dollars to watch some fat guy mumble his way thru a lecture and write scribbles. brutal af
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE ONLINE ESPECIALY IF U HAVE NILS BRUIN. The TAs marking is COMPLETLEY unfair as they are being more strict due to cheating last sem. I took calc in highschool and what they are doing is confusing and "their way".
bruin must have laid an egg
Nils Bruin is a great prof if you want to learn how to solve the problems incorrectly. There were multiple times where he couldn't solve his own question during class. Great prof!
Nils Bruin is quite frankly the second coming of Jesus Christ. His lectures bring me to tears nearly every time, as I am so astounded by the perfection of his teaching ability. Even with the most confusing topics, a mere moment in Nils' lecture brings me complete and total understanding. Nils Bruin is truly the father I wish I had.
I respect Nils Bruin's attempts to try and teach but his abilities are obsolete and his explanations are nonsensical. He also stutters like crazy. Seems like this guy wants to just collect his paychecks and hurt students buy making the course substantially unfair. AVOID!
Nils Bruin is one of the best mathematical researchers that SFU has to offer, but his absolute insane stationary teaching definitely bothers some people. Never moves a needle as soon as he enters the class. Just stands at the desk and scribbles with his bluetooth pen. I would advise not sitting in the first two rows or Bruin will yell at you.
Really enjoyed calculus for biological sciences with Bruin. His applications on the male/female reproductive system were very related to the content and I can tell that he has a lot of experience in that subject. Go Nils Go.
if you are good at reading cursive writing, then take a course with bruin. if not, prepare your eyes for eye murder.
All you need to know is he straight up put 1/2 + 1/3 behind 1/2 + 1/3 - 1/4 on a number line.
Nils Bruin is quite frankly the second coming of Jesus Christ. His lectures bring me to tears nearly every time, as I am so astounded by his magnificent glory. Nils Bruin is miles better than any other prof at SFU. Take a class with Nils Bruin if you can, you won't regret it!!!
Nils Bruin has got to be the hottest professor SFU has to offer. Literally glamorous in every aspect, he could probably walk the red carpet and win a beauty contest. Your focus during lectures will be on Nils and Nils only due to his often distracting wardrobe that emphasizes his enormously large and attractive belly.
Tempted to make an onlyfans to earn back the money I just wasted on this prof
puts something we learned the class right before the midterm on the midterm and expects us to master it. avoid this ruthless prof.
nils bruin is a fat and smelly specimen, nothing else. he attempts to teach and explain calculus concepts but will very quickly make mistake after mistake and students leave the lecture halfway through because his teaching skills are so brutal and also his body odour swamps the sanity of the lecture hall.
words cannot describe the absolute gong show this class is. wtf man
prof is straight booty
the midterm wasn’t that bad tbh.
"It is universally the case that in order to do well on an exam you should answer the question asked. It really pays off to learn to properly read and understand questions before you answer them..." This is coming from a man who consistently makes mistakes in his lectures and even gives the wrong formulas.
The examinations didn't made much sense really, the problems inside of the homework, lectures, and practice problems were levels below in difficulty compared to what was on the exams. Didn't really test well on what they taught
i am forced to pay 700 dollars to take calculus 2. let me tell you that none of that money deserves to go to nils bruin. he is the most idiotic and delusional professor there is. he refuses to help students and his lectures are completely useless, all he does is force everyone to show up at 830 am and watch him scribble on his tablet.
nils bruin is the worst of worst profs. this guy cannot stop stuttering and making mistakes during lectures. its ridiculous how a prof needs to have his goof ups be corrected by students during lectures! you dont learn anything from bruin's lectures because he cannot formulate sentences, stutters repeatedly, and his explanations are nonexistent
nils bruin is a so smelly and bad at explaining.
nils bruin is the worst of worst profs. this guy cannot stop stuttering and making mistakes during lectures. its ridiculous how a prof needs to have his goof ups be corrected by students during lectures! you don't learn anything from bruin's lectures because he cannot formulate sentences, stutters repeatedly, and his explanations are nonexistent
just dont.
Nils Bruin attempts to be a good professor, but he is far from it. He cannot speak more than a few words without stuttering and his sentences are just fragments of mumbling. His lectures are completely useless as you will not be able to understand a second of this man's speech. Avoid this prof. Also his exams are the most brutal on earth
Easily the worst professor of all time. It seems he doesn't know what he's teaching half the time, rambles, doesn't finish material. Makes a several mistakes a lecture, and though it is funny to watch him sweat, you'll also watch your GPA plunder.
This joke of a professor decides to give us 4 new sections at the end of the course and can't even teach them properly. Do not take his classes CS students were literally forced to take this dude for two straight semesters
as n approaches infinity, nils bruin's teaching skills diverge to nonexistence.
Bruin's lectures are pointless and confusing at best. Luckily, if you are taking MATH 151 or 152, professors like Jaime Mulholland & Brenda Davison cover the exact same material on their YouTube channels, so learning the material isn't impossible. Quizzes and tests are tough but fair, and the homework prepares you well enough.
Professor does not know anything about the lessons
Nils Bruin's absolutely horrific stuttering problem impedes his ability to communicate properly. Like seriously, how is this idiot still allowed to teach. Nobody can understand what he is saying during lectures and he sounds like a weasel too. Also his exams are nothing short of the most brutal one earth. Avoid this disgusting prof at all costs!!!
you will need to learn from external sources. Beware of difficult questions on exams
Nils Bruin is the worst of worst professors, it's unbelievable how BAD he actually is. He cannot articulate anything properly. His lectures are a slog of useless examples that don't appear on exams and everyone is forced to learn the whole course by themselves from external sources. Sal from Khan Academy is singlehandedly saving me, praise Sal!!!!!
If you got enrolled in his class RUN
Just finished taking Math 152 with Nils Bruin. For the love of God, do anything in your power to stay away from this joke of a professor. How he is allowed to teach anyone older than first-graders astounds me.
Horrible at explaining even if he tries to, makes mistakes on his own lecture examples. Dont take it with him unless you wanna teach yourself everything.
absolute piece of shh professor! this ugly prof is the worst at sfu by far. his teaching skills are absolutely horrendous. his voice stutters like crazy as well. on the final exam, he was trying to remind people how much time was left but nobody could understand his voice. and the final exam was ridiculously. he put utterly impossible questions.
Nobody likes this joke of a professor. Absolute disgrace to SFU. Just finished the final exam, and I don't even know if it was a final exam, it was more like an extremely hard math competition where just getting 10 percent on the exam would be an accomplishment. Every single question included multiple topics together. Like he wanted to destroy us!
Lectures weren't the best, but I'd recommend learning from Youtube no matter who the professor is for calculus. The final exam was very fair and we got to replace our lowest midterm scores with our final exam score.
The exams were fair. How he changed the grading scheme to accommodate for COVID was also fair. I found his lectures to be subpar, so I watched the YouTube lectures for calculus instead. Handwriting is messy, so if you decide to attend his lectures, listen carefully or pray someone near you got down what he is writing. He's just a god.
Nils Bruin is terrible! Avoid this garbage can! He makes ridiculously hard finals. Gives you the option to replace your midterm grade with your final exam grade but good luck with that because your final exam grade will be in the 20s if you don't study 50 hours a week! Nils Bruin is disgusting.
Better than 151, still not that good. Pos: adjusted grade criteria for covid, quizes bit more friendly than 151. Neg: Weekly quiz, lectures suck (s.o to YT videos instead), weekly homework, ta marking kinda inconsistent, lied about a few expected things for final exam. Didn't stress-cry after the final so could have been worse, really 1.5/2 @best
Overall, Bruin is a heavy compromise in calculus. There are many professors much worse than him, many better. the best thing you can do taking his class is not attending lectures and watching the Brenda Davison or Jamie Mulholland lectures online instead. However, the exams were extremely fair and you could not say the questions were undoable.
Honestly I did not enjoy this class, lectures were horrible but what I was most annoyed about was it was impossible to get an email back from him. I had covid for the first midterm and he was not accommodating at all shifting the weight of the midterm to my final which was then worth 70% of my grade. Tests definetly could've been harder.
Many people dislike him and I understand that. Perhaps he should go easier on people; to be honest the courses (Calc 1 and 2) weren't too hard for me. The main problem, in my opinion, is how much he just exports to online components (prelectures and homework) which are a drag. His lectures are also less engaging than Jamie Mulholland's.
A super difficult class especially if you take it with Nils Bruin. Lots of content to learn; doesn't help that Bruin's lectures are riddled with mistakes and convoluted explanations. Expect difficult quizzes and exams. Be prepared to study 24/7. Seems like he is trying his best but it's hard for me to recommend anyone take it with him.
if there was a stutter counter during bruin's lectures, it would be constantly diverging towards infinity. nils bruin is a literal stutter machine. his exams are tough and his voice is extremely hard to decipher. avoid this prof if you can, if you can't just suck it up and study day and night and maybe you will pass.
never ever take a course with nils bruin. his teaching ability is terrible and he cannot write anything but chicken scratch. do not take a course with nils bruin please because he is beyond the worst of worst profs. he should not be teaching because he simply cannot. students even have to correct his numerous mistakes during lectures!
voted #1 sexiest prof in the SFU math department 3 years in a row #bruinup
The lecture wasn't clear and often make mistakes
Got corrected by a student in lecture last semester (math 152) he argued a little bit and she yelled "just read the textbook" Spoiler: nils was wrong lol
For someones who's very bad at teaching, he gives very hard exams. Man will give a very difficult question on an exam, and yet he can't even teach a simple example. I've never meant someone who is soooo not meant to teach more then nils.
The most gross prof I have ever seen. Nils bruin was not raised well. He always makes weird noises when he teaches, it's super disgusting the noises he makes, never take a course with nils
Dr. Bruin is a great lecturer for MATH 340. He knows the course material super well and delivers it well. He is very open to questions during lectures and seems happy to clarify any confusing steps in a proof or example. Very enthusiastic during lectures, you can tell he's truly passionate about math and algebra.
Nils Bruin always does a decent job teaching. The weekly quizzes helped me understand what I did and did not know. Exams were hard but fair. Nils was always available for questions after class.
Not a bad instructor, clearly passionate about the subject and approachable for help in office hours. Exams are quite reasonable, made passable just by reproducing definitions/basic proofs. Keep in mind this is for an upper-division math course (abstract algebra), as per the reviews below he could be very difficult for calc1/2.
Very pleasantly surprised by how good of a teacher he was, and how well set up the students were. I'd absolutely recommend him for 340, even if his reviews for other courses don't appear to be great.
I had math151 &math 150 with dear Nils. Unfortunately, I have to take macm201 with him again. Just try to avoid him as your best. He is not good at teaching, so basically you have to self-study. Also if the previous exam grades are high, he is gonna offer you a tricky final. He destroyed my math151 by this way. Anyways, try to get rid of him!
Nils seems passionate about MACM201, which is always appreciated. He can be overly semantic and hard to follow, his handwriting is hard to read, and his notes aren't very well organized. He would also often make simple arithmetic mistakes. I felt the quizzes and exams did fairly cover the material in the course though, without being too difficult.
This class is a very difficult course, but Nils makes it slightly better. His lectures are passionate and insightful. The homework assignments are fairly long, and the TA (Haggai) is an incredibly harsh marker. Overall wonderful professor, very warm and friendly, and always willing to help out with questions after/before class or in office hours.
Good Man. Okayish prof
nils bruin is a literal stutter machine. his exams are tough and his voice is extremely hard to decipher. avoid this prof if you can, if you can't just suck it up and study day and night and maybe you will pass.
Gave pretty fair hws and exams, hand writing was a little hard to read, not a complete deal breaker tho. You have the support of Jaimie's videos so lecture isn't rlly mandatory
Makes little calculation errors while teaching and has to correct himself often but I respect the enthusiasm and passion he has for mathematics. You will learn a lot. The exams were fair. The quizzes were quite straightforward since they were completely based on the assignments every week (which you don't even need to submit)
Nils isn't a bad nor a great prof, the general lecture material was exactly the same as Jamie's videos (example problems were identical). Quizzes were easy and pulled from the weekly HW with a few numerical changes. Midterms and Final were harder but fine, do ALL the HW (go to office hours if you need help) + the review packages and you'll be fine
Dr. Nils Bruin is a pretty good prof. His 1.8 rating is certainly undeserved. His lectures can be hard to follow, but I feel that it could just be a byproduct of the content rather than his lecturing abilities to some extent. His writing can be hard to read but you do get used to it. His tests are pretty damn fair too.
just don't sit in the first few rows, his breath is awful
The materials for this course are exactly the same as Jamie's videos. Nils's quizzes and exams are very fair. Since homework questions are not submitted but instead used for quizzes, it does mean that all assessments are timed tests. Practice your homework questions and in-class examples, and you'll be fine for exams.
dont take it
there's a reason nobody sits in the first few rows god his breath is awful and it travels good grief somebody give this man some mint.
Honestly Math 151 is getting harder as we learned more stuff. Cal 12 really helps a lot. If you just need a math course to meet the requirement do think about it when you choose it. But he is kind, although he sometimes made some mistakes during lecture and it's a little bit fast, so if you take it really need to spend some time after class
Please avoid him if can, he always gets stuff wrong in lectures and he can't really teach, basically just says what he's writing down, be prepared to self study!! Also his webassign and seminar questions are not at all the same as the ones on the test or whats on the slides. Taking this class makes me feel like I have brain cancer.
Please don't go to these lectures; you can watch Jamie Mullholand's videos. He doesn't know how to teach and has a lot of homework every week. Upside is that his tests and quizzes are not that hard if you do all the homework and sample tests.
This professor is good, don't let the first years review bombing him scare you away. His lectures are pretty clear and the assignments as well as exams are fair.
Great guy, passionate about teaching, very knowledgable and gives fair exams. His reviews are not justified to be so low. All the first year calculus reviews are from kids who can't handle a little rigour.
He is not a good teacher and from what I've seen there are a lot better teachers however his class structure is nice with assignments and quizzes and his exams are fair. I didn't learn during lectures mostly through the textbook and youtube videos but the homework and textbook prepared you well for what was expected on the exam.
get this guy some mint oh my god his breath reeks, sit in row 5 at least if you want your nose to be okay
hes gotta brush his dam teeth he smell
take his class if you like smelly breath. like my god bring him some mints if you go to his class his breath reeks like rotten eggs and spoiled avocados. sit in at least row 10 if you don't want to have your nose go bad. actually disgusting how bad his breath smells i didn't know breath could smell that bad it's horrendous
Good prof, explains things fully and does practice problems to show application of concepts. Lots of homework but not hard to keep up with. Writes notes in semi-cursive so if you have trouble reading it I'd suggest another prof. Extremely fair tests - content almost identical to practice problems in lecture just different numbers
Nice person but poor teacher. You can see that he's passionate about what he talks about, just that his communication skills are terrible. The homework helps prepare you for the quizzes every week, and helps prepare you for the midterms and final. I suggest taking this class with someone else if you haven't done Calculus in high school.
Get this man some deodorant and breath minds good god my god his breath smells horrific it's brutal don't go anywhere close to this guy
Not as bad as everybody says, he makes a few mistakes in lecture but its to be expected. He clearly is passionate about mathematics, and is willing to chat and answer any questions you may have. The assignments are helpful, but can be overwhelming sometimes. Tests are on the easier side, do all homework and you should be fine.
Difficult to understand most of his lectures. Makes mistakes and stutters a lot during lecture. Mid-term was harder than class expectation. Would definitely recommend Jamie's videos if you are having a hard time understanding his lectures.
All these reviews sum it up. Constant stuttering, and terrible breath, you basically can't win. Can't understand his lectures because he can't stop stuttering and if you ask him stuff in office hours his breath smells so bad you probably want to stand outside his office when you talk to him!! Terrible professor!
Nils is really passionate about the material and it shows. The material for this class is fairly advanced and abstract, and I found the pace a bit too fast (but this is only my second UD math course). Midterm was very fair, but the final was challenging.
Avoid at all costs, you can take calc1 a different semester if Nils is teaching, Nils is the most
Can never read his writing but his exams are easy!
He isn't that bad tbh, but his handwriting is something else. Decoding his cursive is a skill on its own
Tons of hand-written notes, but exams are easy
Sometimes hard to follow the lectures but there are plenty of resources to succeed (textbook, webassign, seminars), he gets way more hate than he deserves, if you study you'll be fine
Lectures were difficult to follow; the professor made repeated mistakes and made no effort to make the content digestible. As someone who took calculus in high school, I still had to relearn every concept outside of lectures. I couldn't imagine taking this class as my first exposure to calculus. Tests and quizzes were very fair, though.
The course isn't too hard, but exams cover everything, so you must practice a lot. TA grading is extremely strict — even small calculation errors can lead to 0/6. The professor also makes mistakes during lectures. Overall the course isn't that bad, but Calc 1 shouldn't be this difficult to pass with a good grade.
sometimes makes too many mistakes while writing on his slides and his writing is hard to decipher. i like to watch his hair bob up and down when he talks. Literally just do all the homework yourself and theres no way you dont get an A. Undeserving of anything below a 2, but i can see why hes not a 5.
nice guy , exams are fair , the course itself aint easy but its possible to get 100% on the exams, if you study.
